Background
In recent years, several path-breaking findings on human mobility patterns point out a novel issue which is of important theoretical significance and great application prospects. The empirical analysis of the data which can reflect the real-world human mobility provides the basic cognition and verification of the theoretical models and predictive results on human mobility. One of the most noticeable findings in previous studies on human mobility is the wide-spread scaling anomalies, e.g. the power-law-like displacement distributions. Understanding the origin of these scaling anomalies is of central importance to this issue and therefore is the focus of our discussion.Methodology/Principal Findings
In this paper, we empirically analyze the real-world human movements which are based on GPS records, and observe rich scaling properties in the temporal-spatial patterns as well as an abnormal transition in the speed-displacement patterns together with an evidence to the real-world traffic jams. In addition, we notice that the displacements at the population level show a significant positive correlation, indicating a cascading-like nature in human movements. Furthermore, our analysis at the individual level finds that the displacement distributions of users with stronger correlations usually are closer to the power law, suggesting a correlation between the positive correlation of the displacement series and the form of an individual''s displacement distribution.Conclusions/Significance
These empirical findings make connections between the two basic properties of human mobility, the scaling anomalies on displacement distributions and the positive correlations on displacement series, implying the cascading-like dynamics which is exhibited by the positive correlations would cause the emergence of scaling properties on human mobility patterns. Our findings would inspire further researches on mechanisms and predictions of human mobility. 相似文献2.
Urban Scaling of Cities in the Netherlands 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We investigated the socioeconomic scaling behavior of all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants in the Netherlands and found significant superlinear scaling of the gross urban product with population size. Of these cities, 22 major cities have urban agglomerations and urban areas defined by the Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics. For these major cities we investigated the superlinear scaling for three separate modalities: the cities defined as municipalities, their urban agglomerations and their urban areas. We find superlinearity with power-law exponents of around 1.15. But remarkably, both types of agglomerations underperform if we compare for the same size of population an agglomeration with a city as a municipality. In other words, an urban system as one formal municipality performs better as compared to an urban agglomeration with the same population size. This effect is larger for the second type of agglomerations, the urban areas. We think this finding has important implications for urban policy, in particular municipal reorganizations. A residual analysis suggests that cities with a municipal reorganization recently and in the past decades have a higher probability to perform better than cities without municipal restructuring. 相似文献

Cell motility is a fundamental process with relevance to embryonic development, immune response, and metastasis. Cells move either spontaneously, in a nondirected fashion, or in response to chemotactic signals, in a directed fashion. Even though they are often studied separately, both forms of motility share many complex processes at the molecular and subcellular scale, e.g., orchestrated cytoskeletal rearrangements and polarization. In addition, at the cellular level both types of motility include persistent runs interspersed with reorientation pauses. Because there is a great range of variability in motility among different cell types, a key challenge in the field is to integrate these multiscale processes into a coherent framework. We analyzed the motility of Dictyostelium cells with bimodal analysis, a method that compares time spent in persistent versus reorientation mode. Unexpectedly, we found that reorientation time is coupled with persistent time in an inverse correlation and, surprisingly, the inverse correlation holds for both nondirected and chemotactic motility, so that the full range of Dictyostelium motility can be described by a single scaling relationship. Additionally, we found an identical scaling relationship for three human cell lines, indicating that the coupling of reorientation and persistence holds across species and making it possible to describe the complexity of cell motility in a surprisingly general and simple manner. With this new perspective, we analyzed the motility of Dictyostelium mutants, and found four in which the coupling between two modes was altered. Our results point to a fundamental underlying principle, described by a simple scaling law, unifying mechanisms of eukaryotic cell motility at several scales. 相似文献

In a study of depression and risk amongHIV-affected young people (children whose parents areinfected with or have died from HIV/AIDS), subjectsdid not report high risk sexual or substance usebehavior. Findings are attributed to parentalparticipation in a community-based HIV service programthat provides parents with HIV prevention educationand long term social and emotional support. Multi-generational community based models ofprevention that include parents as critical elementsof instruction may also be effective in substanceabuse treatment programs and in programs for childrenwho experience difficulty in school. 相似文献

Small-angle neutron and x-ray scattering have become invaluable tools for probing the nanostructure of molecules in solution. It was recently shown that the definite integral of the scattering profile exhibits a scaling (power-law) behavior with respect to molecular mass. We derive the origin of this relationship, and discuss how the integrated scattering profile can be used to identify differing levels of disorder over local ?30 Å length scales. We apply our analysis to globular and intrinsically disordered proteins. 相似文献

Records of social interactions provide us with new sources of data for understanding how interaction patterns affect collective dynamics. Such human activity patterns are often bursty, i.e., they consist of short periods of intense activity followed by long periods of silence. This burstiness has been shown to affect spreading phenomena; it accelerates epidemic spreading in some cases and slows it down in other cases. We investigate a model of history-dependent contagion. In our model, repeated interactions between susceptible and infected individuals in a short period of time is needed for a susceptible individual to contract infection. We carry out numerical simulations on real temporal network data to find that bursty activity patterns facilitate epidemic spreading in our model. 相似文献

We test for universal patterns in cultural evolution by Guttman scaling on two different worldwide samples of archaeological traditions and on well-known archaeological sequences. The evidence is generally consistent with universal evolutionary sequences. We also present evidence for some punctuated evolutionary events. 相似文献

Patterns of Metabolism and Growth in Avian Embryos 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Metabolic rates of embryos of precocial birds increase rapidlyuntil about 80% through incubation, then increase slowly remainconstant or even decline. In altricial species, embryo metabolicrates increase continuously and at an accelerating rate throughout incubation. Total energy cost of development is higher inprecocial than in altricial species. Growth patterns of altricialand precocial embryos differ in the same way as does metabolicrate. Embryo growth rates decline late in incubation in precocialspecies, but increase continuously in altricial species. Embryometabolic rate in cal/hr (P) is related to embryo mass in grams(M) and growth rate in grams/day (GR) by the equation P = 12.17GR+ 1.66M + 1.81. The energy cost of growth in avian embryos is292 cal/g. The energy cost of maintenance is 1.66 cal/g hr andappeals to be independent of embryo mass. Differences in growthpatterns account for the observed differences in metabolic ratesand total energy costs of development. High energy costs ofmaintenance account for high total developmental costs in piecocialspecies and in species that have unusually long incubation periods. 相似文献

Person who inject illicit substances have an important role in HIV-1 blood and sexual transmission and together with person who uses heavy non-injecting drugs may have less than optimal adherence to anti-retroviral treatment and eventually could transmit resistant HIV variants. Unfortunately, molecular biology data on such key population remain fragmentary in most low and middle-income countries. The aim of the present study was to assess HIV infection rates, evaluate HIV-1 genetic diversity, drug resistance, and to identify HIV transmission clusters in heavy drug users (DUs). For this purpose, DUs were recruited in the context of a Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) study in different Brazilian cities during 2009. Overall, 2,812 individuals were tested for HIV, and 168 (6%) of them were positive, of which 19 (11.3%) were classified as recent seroconverters, corresponding to an estimated incidence rate of 1.58%/year (95% CI 0.92–2.43%). Neighbor joining phylogenetic trees from env and pol regions and bootscan analyses were employed to subtype the virus from132 HIV-1-infected individuals. HIV-1 subtype B was prevalent in most of the cities under analysis, followed by BF recombinants (9%-35%). HIV-1 subtype C was the most prevalent in Curitiba (46%) and Itajaí (86%) and was also detected in Brasília (9%) and Campo Grande (20%). Pure HIV-1F infections were detected in Rio de Janeiro (9%), Recife (6%), Salvador (6%) and Brasília (9%). Clusters of HIV transmission were assessed by Maximum likelihood analyses and were cross-compared with the RDS network structure. Drug resistance mutations were verified in 12.2% of DUs. Our findings reinforce the importance of the permanent HIV-1 surveillance in distinct Brazilian cities due to viral resistance and increasing subtype heterogeneity all over Brazil, with relevant implications in terms of treatment monitoring, prophylaxis and vaccine development. 相似文献

KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa is currently the site of the world's fastest growing HIV/AIDS epidemic, where it is estimated that between 30 and 40 percent of the adult population is seropositive for HIV. With support from local politicians and members of various government ministries, several self-styled guardians of tradition have emerged to form organizations that advocate and conduct regular virginity testing of girls. Reference to the current HIV/AIDS epidemic is central to calls for greater support of this practice. Drawing on original research among Zulu-speaking people in the periurban communities of Durban, this article examines the sociocultural construction of HIV/AIDS and locates the growing popularity of virginity testing within a gendered meaning-making process consistent with commonly held beliefs that the epidemic is the result of women being sexually "out of control." With the social impact of AIDS starting to take its toll in the forms of increasing AIDS-related deaths and a growing population of orphans, I argue that virginity testing is an attempt to manage the epidemic by exerting greater control over women and their sexuality. In addition, virginity testing of girls helps to draw attention away from the role of men in the maturing epidemic, consideration of which has been conspicuously absent in the popular discourse on AIDS at all levels of South African society. 相似文献

Comparative studies were carried out with cultures isolated from Phomopsis condiomata and/or Diaporthe ascomata found on naturally-infected living stems or on overwintered stem fragments of Arctium lappa L., Helianthus annuus L., Glycine max (L.) Merr., and Xanthium italicum Moretti, growing in or nearby the same fields in Vojvodina. Results underscored the heterogeneity of the Phomopsis anamorphs in the D. arctii (Lasch) Trav, complex, Intra-specific vegetative incompatibility groups were distinguished among Phomopsis and/or Diaporthe populations from A. lappa. More than one phytopathogenic Phomopsis and/or Diaporthe species were identified on X. italicum. P. longicolla Hobbs was isolated for the first time in Yugoslavia from soybean stem debris. The holomorph Diaporthe (Phomopsis) helianthi Muntanola- Cvetkovic, Mihaljcevic et Petrov showed distinguishing characteristics with respect to other congeneric fungi. 相似文献

Maximum Vegetative Growth Potential and Seasonal Patterns of Resource Dynamics during Peach Growth 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
The maximum vegetative growth potential of two peach [Prunuspersica (L.) Batsch] cultivars that differ in the timing ofresource demand for reproductive growth was determined in termsof stem extension, stem and leaf dry weight accumulation, andtrunk radial increment on defruited trees. The maximum vegetativegrowth potentials were similar on the two cultivars indicatingthat the greater partitioning of dry weight to vegetative growthfrequently observed on early maturing cultivars compared tolate maturing cultivars is the result of a shorter period ofcompetition between reproductive and vegetative growth, ratherthan a genetic difference in vegetative growth potential. Onboth cultivars, stem extension and leaf dry weight accumulationceased in mid-summer, however stem dry weight accumulation andtrunk radial increment increase continued through the autumn. The presence of fruit did not have a detectable effect on thefinal stem length, stem dry weight or leaf dry weight on theearly maturing cultivar, but it reduced final stem length anddry weight by 43 and 56%, respectively on the late maturingcultivar. The presence of fruit did decrease stem length, stemdry weight and leaf dry weight on the early maturing cultivarfor 1 month prior to and 1 month after fruit harvest. Fruitdecreased final trunk radial increment by 42 and 77% on theearly and late maturing cultivars, respectively. These reductionsin vegetative growth indicate that resource partitioning tovegetative growth was reduced by competition with fruit growth. Comparison of stem relative extension rates and stem and leafrelative growth rates on fruited and defruited trees indicatedthat vegetative growth was resource-limited shortly after vegetativebud break on fruited trees of both cultivars. This period ofresource-limited vegetative growth corresponded to a periodof resource-limited fruit growth identified in an earlier study.During the period of resource-limited vegetative growth, assimilatesupply was low due to low leaf area index, and carbohydratedemand was relatively high due to high vegetative and reproductivegrowth potentials, creating resource-limited growth conditions.Copyright1995, 1999 Academic Press Maximum vegetative growth potential, carbon economy, partitioning, resource availability, resource limitation, source-limited growth, growth analysis, relative growth rate, peach, Prunus persica (L.) Macrogeographic studies are important for understanding gene flow patterns, and comparative data for related species with distinct bionomical traits may help to clarify the importance of such traits in natural populations. The aims of this study were to quantify the genetic variability and the populational structuring of three Brazilian littorinid species (Nodilittorina lineolata, Littoraria flava and L. angulifera) and to discuss the relationship between them, as well as each species’ mode of development and spatial distribution. We also investigated the species diversity in the ziczac complex. Isozyme analyses were done on 20 samples of N. lineolata, nine of L. flava and 10 of L. angulifera, collected along 4000 km of the Brazilian coast. Sixteen polymorphic loci were analysed in N. lineolata, 15 in L. angulifera and 17 in L. flava. All species showed high genetic variability. At sites where more than one species was present, there was a correlation among the values of gene diversity. The degree of interpopulational differentiation (N. lineolata, FST = 0.028; L. flava, FST = 0.054; L. angulifera, FST = 0.185) was coherent with the mode of larval development of each species. No linkage disequilibrium was found in N. lineolata. These findings, together with morphological evidence, corroborated the existence of only one species of the ziczac complex along the Brazilian coast. 相似文献
