We studied correlations between the estimates of the neuroticism level (one of the most significant factors of the emotional sphere of a personality) and the amplitude/time characteristics of evoked EEG potentials (EPs). Passive and negative emotiogenic, as well as neutral (from the emotional aspect) visual images (stimuli from the set of the International Affective Picture System, IAPS), were presented to 102 tested persons. The neuroticism level was estimated based on Eysenck’s personality questionnaire. We found that subjects with high estimates of the neuroticism level are characterized, in general, by somewhat higher rates and intensities of processing of emotionally negative information, a higher level of activation of the processes of automatic attention, and readiness to react to both significant and insignificant visual signals (with the aim of probably fighting of a threat). These peculiarities were manifested as relatively shorter latencies of the Р1, N1, Р2, N2, and Р3 components and as higher amplitudes of the Р2 component in the EPs induced by emotionally negative stimuli, as compared with the corresponding indices in subjects with a low neuroticism level. The amplitudes of the N2 component in the case of presentation of negative and neutral stimuli showed a trend toward a decrease. The approach used can be applied for obtaining objective indices interpreted as correlates of peculiarities of the emotional responsiveness typical of a personality.  相似文献

We studied the peculiarities of the amplitude/time parameters of evoked EEG potentials (EPs) and event-related potentials (ERPs) in 10- to 11-year-old children characterized by low and high anxiety levels. The latter levels were estimated using the scale of the manifest anxiety test of Prikhozhan and projective techniques (“House–Tree–Person,” HTP, and the Lüscher color test). For children with a high anxiety level, the amplitudes of the following EP components and ERPs were lower than those in low-anxiety children of the same age: P1 (predominantly in the occipital region of the left hemisphere), P2 (in the right occipital region), and Р300 wave (in different loci of both hemispheres). In high-anxiety children, we also more frequently observed increased amplitudes of the N2 component in the left parietal and right occipital regions. High-anxiety individuals were characterized by longer latencies of component P1 (mostly in the right frontal and left central regions) and, at the same time, shorter latencies of component N1 (in the parietal and occipital regions of the left hemisphere and also in the right temporal region). Thus, we found that the amplitude/time characteristics of a few EP components and ERPs in children with high anxiety levels differ statistically significantly from the parameters of corresponding EPs/ERPs in individuals of the same age but with low anxiety levels.  相似文献

Healthy subjects (n = 88) were asked to passively visualize positive and passive emotiogenic visual stimuli and also stimuli with a neutral emotional content. Images of the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) were used. Amplitude/time characteristics of the components of evoked EEG potentials (EPs), P1, N1, P2, N2, and P3 and topographic distribution of the latter components were analyzed. The latencies, amplitudes, and topography of the EP waves induced by presentation of positive and negative stimuli were found to be different from the respective values for the EPs induced by neutral stimuli. The level and pattern of these differences typical of different EP components were dissimilar and depended on the sign of the emotions. Specificities related to the valency of an identified stimulus were observed within nearly all stages of processing of visual signals, for the negative stimuli, beginning from an early stage of sensory analysis corresponding to the development of wave Р1. The latencies of components Р1 in the case of presentation of emotiogenic negative stimuli and those of components N1, N2, and Р3 in the case of presentation of the stimuli of both valencies were shorter than the latencies observed at neutral stimuli. The amplitude of component N2 at perception of positive stimuli was, on average, lower, while the Р3 amplitude at perception of all emotiogenic stimuli was higher than in the case of presentation of neutral stimuli. The time dynamics of topographic peculiarities of processing of emotiogenic information were complicated. Activation of the left hemisphere was observed during the earliest stages of perception, while the right hemisphere was activated within the intermediate stages. Generalized activation of the cortex after the action of negative signals and dominance of the left hemisphere under conditions of presentation of positive stimuli were observed only within the final stages. As is supposed, emotiogenic stimuli possess a greater biological significance than neutral ones, and this is why the former attract visual attention first; they more intensely activate the respective cortical zones, and the corresponding visual information is processed more rapidly. The observed effects were more clearly expressed in the case of action of negative stimuli; these effects involved more extensive cortical zones. These facts are indicative of the higher intensity of activating influences of negative emotiogenic stimuli on neutral systems of the higher CNS structures.  相似文献

A correlation between some characteristics of the visual evoked potentials and individual personality traits (by the Kettell scale) was revealed in 40 healthy subjects when they recognized facial expressions of anger and fear. As compared to emotionally stable subjects, emotionally unstable subjects had shorter latencies of evoked potentials and suppressed late negativity in the occipital and temporal areas. In contrast, amplitude of these waves in the frontal areas was increased. In emotionally stable group of subjects differences in the evoked potentials related to emotional expressions were evident throughout the whole signal processing beginning from the early sensory stage (P1 wave). In emotionally unstable group differences in the evoked potentials related to recognized emotional expressions developed later. Sensitivity of the evoked potentials to emotional salience of faces was also more pronounced in the emotionally stable group. The involvement of the frontal cortex, amygdala, and the anterior cingulate cortex in the development of individual features of recognition of facial expressions of anger and fear is discussed.  相似文献

Recognition of joy, anger, and fear by face expression in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Behavioral and neurophysiological characteristics of a visual recognition of emotions of joy, anger, and fear were studied in 9 young healthy men and 10 women. It was shown that these emotions were identified by subjects with different rate and accuracy; significant gender differences in recognition of anger and fear were found. Recording of visual evoked potentials (VEP) from the occipital (O1/2), medial temporal (T3/4), inferior temporal (T5/6), and frontal (F3/4) areas revealed differences (related with the type of emotion) in the latencies of P150, N180, P250, and N350 waves and in the amplitude of VEP components with the latencies longer than 250 ms. These differences were maximally expressed in T3/4 derivation. The subjects could be divided in two groups. The first group was characterized by increased VEP latencies and higher amplitudes of VEP components later than 250 ms in response to anger (in comparison with other types of emotions). These phenomena were observed in all the derivations but were most pronounced in T3/4. In the second group, only late P250 and N350 components had shorter latencies during recognition of fear. VEP amplitude variations related with the type of emotions were insignificant and were recorded in the occipital and frontal areas. The two groups of subjects also differed in psychoemotional personality characteristics. It is suggested that primary recognition of facial expression takes place in the temporal cortical areas. A possible correlation of electrophysiological indices of emotion recognition with personality traits is discussed.  相似文献

Sex differences of hemisphere asymmetry of homo- and heterotopic transcallosal responses in association cortex of 48 cats (24 male and 24 female) immobilized by tubocurarine have been studied by means of topographic EPs recordings in both hemispheres. In males left hemisphere dominates by the amplitude of homotopic and positive wave of heterotopic EPs and right hemisphere dominates by the amplitude of negative wave of heterotopic sensorimotor cortex EPs. The individual asymmetry of EPs has been observed in sensomotor cortex of females and in parietal cortex of animals of both sex. The interhemispheric asymmetry is expressed distinctly in females than in males. It is concluded that sex dimorphism is present in functional organization of associative system of (callosal and intracortical) connections in cat's neocortex projection and association areas which means its more expressed hemisphere lateralization in males with more expressed interhemispheric asymmetry of functional transcallosal connections in females.  相似文献

Intrapair similarity of evoked potentials (EPs) to light flash, checkerboard, house picture, the word "house" and a number of other stimuli was estimated in 20 pairs of monozygotic and 20 pairs of dizygotic adult twins of the same gender. In the right temporal area the level of the genotypic control of amplitude-temporal parameters of EPs on the whole is higher than in the left one; the more prominent this difference is in responses to spatial-structural stimuli. In the left temporal area, the genotypic control is manifested in latencies of components of EPs to linguistic stimuli.  相似文献

Visual evoked potentials (EPs) of the left and right hemispheres in response to relevant and irrelevant stimuli in the structures of the left and right hemispheres have been studied in healthy young schoolchildren, learning-disabled (LD) children, and mentally retarded (MR) children. In healthy children, the largest EP variations depending on the stimulus relevancy have been found in associative structures of the left hemisphere. In LD children of the same age, the amplitude and temporal characteristics of left-hemispheric EPs to target and nontarget stimuli are the same. In MR children, EPs to relevant and irrelevant stimuli do not differ from each other in either the left or the right hemisphere. EP latencies are significantly longer in MR children than in healthy children. The results of simultaneous recording of EPs in the left and right hemispheres during isolated stimulation of the right and left visual half-fields indicate that interhemispheric interaction is impaired in children with deviations in mental development. The results of the study are discussed in terms of the psychological characteristics and learning ability of children.  相似文献

In a group including 72 adults of both sexes, we studied correlations between the estimates of the so-called coronary-prone personality type (type A) diagnosed using the Jenkins questionnaire and the spectral powers (SPs) of the frequency components (rhythms) of background EEGs recorded in the resting state (leads C3 and C4 according to the 10-20 system). Despite natural high interindividual variability, estimates that characterized the subject as belonging to the behavioral type A corresponded, on average, to relatively low SPs of the δ, θ, and α EEG components, intermediate values of the β1 rhythm SP and coefficient of reactivity of the α rhythm, and higher SPs of the high-frequency (β2 and γ) rhythms. Estimates characterizing type B personality corresponded to significantly higher δ-rhythm SPs, intermediate SPs of the θ and α rhythms, and smaller SPs of the β and γ rhythms. The interhemisphere asymmetry coefficient for the α rhythm was usually negative in type-A individuals and positive in the cases of types B and AB. The peculiarities observed are probably determined, to a certain extent, by the fact that both the characteristics of the behavioral types of the personality and the amplitude parameters of EEG rhythms depend significantly on inherited (in particular neurochemical) factors. Such peculiarities of the neurodynamic constitution of the individual are determined, to a considerable extent, by the specificity of organization and functioning of a few neurotransmitter (in particular aminergic) and neurohumoral systems.  相似文献

The determinants of individual differences in visual EPs to stimuli of different type depending on the age of subjects were studied. EPs to flash, checkerboard pattern and some other stimuli with semantic aspect were recorded in three groups of MZ, DZ twins aged 8-9, 10-12, 18-25 years. The heritability of EPs parameters is not ontogenetically stable characteristic. It changes from one age group to another in different way for separate EPs components and parameters depending on their nature, type of stimulus, area of recording. Most of all genotypical influences are manifested in EPs parameters of 10-12 years old subjects, especially the middle latency components from vertex area and latent periods of EPs in comparison with their amplitudes.  相似文献

The relationship between 10 components of somatosensory evoked potentials (EPs) and pain discrimination in man was studied using Signal Detection Theory (SDT) psychophysics. Two painful electrical stimuli were delivered to the right index finger in random order over all trials. EPs were recorded from the scalp at the contralateral primary somatic projection area while subjects performed SDT discrimination. The stimulus-response combination was classified into 4 categories according to SDT response: hits, misses, false alarms (FAs) and correct rejections (CRs). The amplitudes and peak latencies of EPs in 4 categories were compared with each other. EPs associated with hits and FAs had significantly greater amplitude at P 190, N 220 and P 270 than those associated with misses and CRs, while there was no change in the amplitude of other components. The amplitude of these 3 components systematically increased with an increase in the magnitude of subjective response. Peak latencies of all components were not related to the response categories. These results indicate that the amplitude of the 3 last components may be concerned with the pain evaluating system in the brain.  相似文献

Somatosensory and visual evoked potentials (EPs) of the brain of 17 sensitive subjects (extrasenses) and 12 ordinary healthy subjects were studied. It was found that during extrasensory activity (direct impact, meditation) in comparison to rest values, the amplitude of intermediate and late components of visual and somatosensory EPs of both hemispheres and early components of somatosensory EPs of ipsilateral in relation to stimulation hemisphere diminished 2-4--fold. There was a recovery of these components after discontinuation of extrasensory activity. It is shown that ordinary subjects could not change their EPs when they tried their best to decrease EPs. It is shown that ordinary subjects could not change their EPs when they tried their best to decrease EPs. It is suggested that the ability of extrasenses for reversible changes of their mind by direct adjustment of the activity of the ascending nonspecific systems of the brain and by alterations of interhemispheric relations forms the basis of extrasensory activity.  相似文献

Evoked potentials (EPs) to light were studied in groups of patients with tumours of basal-diencephalic localization (24 patients) and at the brain-stem level (24 patients), in comparison with 11 normal subjects. In the first group, a decrease of amplitude and increase of response duration were found in the frontal cortical areas, with simultaneous reduction of intrahemispheric differences due to decrease of low-frequency components in the EP spectra by amplitude in fronto-central parts, and of alpha- and beta-frequencies in the occipital parts of the hemispheres. EP changes resulting from brain-stem tumors were more expressed than in the case of cerebellar tumors. In patients with foci causing a pronounced irritation of the brain-stem, a decrease in responses amplitude was observed accompanied by an amplitude lowering of delta- and theta-frequencies in EPs-spectra in the frontal, central and temporal leads, with no changes in the occipital leads. The obtained data testify to functional inequivalence and independence of different EP frequency components suggesting that the methods of studying the EP frequency structure are informative and efficient.  相似文献

In a group of 68 adults of both sexes, we examined correlations between estimates of the psychological adaptability of an individual (diagnosed using a multilevel personality questionnaire, MPQ) and spectral powers, SPs, of the frequency components (rhythms) of background EEG recorded in the resting state (leads C3 and C4 according to the 10–20 system). Despite high individual variability within the group, indices by the scale “communicative potential” demonstrated significant correlation with the SP of the θ rhythm, while estimates of the moral normativity correlated with the SPs of the α and β1 rhythms. Subgroups of the persons classified according to the level of the integral adaptation capability (personality’s adaptation potential) differed from each other in the mean estimates of interhemisphere asymmetry of the α rhythm; this index was higher in subjects with the medium/high level of adaptability. The correlations observed are, most probably, determined by the fact that both the level of psychological adaptability of the personality and the EEG amplitude parameters depend significantly on genetic (neurochemical, in particular) factors. Such peculiarities of the neurodynamic constitution of the individual are probably determined, to a considerable extent, by the specificities of organization and functioning of a few neurotransmitter (aminergic, in particular) and neurohumoral systems.  相似文献

It is well established that both the emotional tone of sensory stimuli and the personality characteristics of an individual can bias sensory perception. What has largely been unexplored is whether the current emotional state of an individual has a similar effect, and how it works together with other factors. Here we carry out a comprehensive study to examine how olfactory perception is affected by the emotional tone of the stimuli, and the personality and current emotional state of the individual. Subjects reported experiencing happiness, sadness, negativity/hostility and neutrality when exposed to corresponding emotionally themed video clips, and in each case, smelled a suprathreshold pleasant, an unpleasant and a neutral odorant. The time taken for the subject to detect each odorant and the olfactory intensity were recorded. We found that women detected the pleasant odorant faster than the neutral one. In addition, personality modulated reaction time and olfactory intensity, such that neurotic and anxious individuals were selectively biased toward affective rather than neutral odorants. Finally, current emotional state augmented intensity in men but not in women, and differentially influenced the response time. These findings provided new insights into the effects of emotion and personality on olfactory perception.  相似文献

Personality is both a reflection of the bio-behavioral profile of individuals and a summary of how they typically interact with their physical and social world. Personality is usually defined as having distinct behavioral characteristics, which are assumed to be consistent over time and across contexts. Like other mammals, primates have individual differences in personality. Although temporal consistency is sometimes measured in primates, and contextual consistency is sometimes measured across experimental contexts, it is rare to measure both in the same individuals and outside of experimental settings. Here, we aim to measure both temporal and contextual consistency in chimpanzees, assessing their personality with behavioral observations from naturally occurring contexts (i.e., real-life settings). We measured personality-based behaviors in 22 sanctuary chimpanzees, in the contexts of feeding, affiliation, resting, and solitude, across two time periods, spanning 4 years. Of the 22 behaviors recorded, about 64% were consistent across two to four contexts and 50% were consistent over time. Ten behaviors loaded significantly onto three trait components: explorativeness, boldness-sociability, and anxiety-sociability, as revealed by factor analysis. Like others, we documented individual differences in the personality of chimpanzees based on reliably measured observations in real-life contexts. Furthermore, we demonstrated relatively strong, but not absolute, temporal, and contextual consistency in personality-based behaviors. We also found another aspect of individual differences in personality, specifically, the extent to which individual chimpanzees show consistency. Some individuals showed contextual and temporal consistency, whereas others show significant variation across behaviors, contexts, and/or time. We speculate that the relative degree of consistency in personality may vary within chimpanzees. It may be that different primate species vary in the extent to which individuals show consistency of personality traits. Our behavioral-based assessment can be used with wild populations, increasing the validity of personality studies, facilitating comparative studies and potentially being applicable to conservation efforts.  相似文献

We studied peculiarities of the spectral characteristics of EEG in 111 healthy adult subjects of both sexes. The levels of situative anxiety (anxiety state) and personal anxiety were estimated using the Spielberger–Khanin test system. To estimate anxiety-related properties of the personality, Cattel’s technique 16 PF (form А) was used. Estimates of situative anxiety demonstrated only two cases of positive correlation with the spectral power density (SPD) of EEG rhythms (SPDs of the beta2 rhythm in the right-hemisphere temporal and occipital regions; recording with the eyes open). Estimates of personal anxiety positively correlated with the SPDs of the beta1 and (especially) beta2 EEG rhythms. Under conditions with the eyes open, the number of significant correlations was greater, and correlations themselves were tighter than with the eyes closed. The closest correlations of the estimates of personal anxiety with the SPDs of the beta rhythm were found in frontal and central leads of both hemispheres and in parietal and occipital loci of the right hemisphere. Only a single case of correlation of the alpha rhythm SPD with personal anxiety (negative correlation, a parietal lead in the left hemisphere) was found. At the same time, rather numerous correlations of the alpha rhythm expression with an index congeneric to anxiety, the C factor by the Cattel’s questionnaire (emotional stability/instability), were found. Thus, the intense beta EEG rhythm can be considered an electrographic correlate of high situative and personal anxieties. At the same time, the alpha rhythm power correlates with the emotional stability of the individual. We suppose that persons with a well-developed alpha rhythm are characterized by active and stable functioning of the cerebral dopaminergic system; this simultaneously serves as a pre-requisite of high emotional stability and social adaptability.  相似文献

In a group of 70 adult subjects of both sexes, we estimated the levels of the need for achievement and its motivation (interpreted as generalized characteristics of the state of the motivational sphere of a personality and diagnosed using questionnaires of Orlov and Mehrabian) and examined the correlations of these estimates with spectral powers (SPs) of the frequency components (rhythms) of the current background EEG (С3 and С4 leads according to the 10–20 system). Despite the fact that naturally high interindividual variability exists, high estimates of the need for achievement correlated with medium values of the SPs of most EEG frequency components (δ, θ, α, and β1 rhythms), low SPs of the β2 and γ rhythms, and higher values of the coefficient of reactivity (CR) of the α rhythm. A high level of the need for achievement corresponded to higher SPs of the θ and γ rhythms and high CR of the α rhythm, a medium SP of this EEG component, and lower SPs of the δ and β rhythms. The coefficient of interhemisphere asymmetry of the α rhythm was the highest at low values of the studied psychological indices. Interrelations that we found in our study can be explained as follows: both the characteristics of the need for achievement and motivation typical of a certain personality and the amplitude parameters of the EEG rhythms observed in this individual depend significantly on genetically determined factors (in particular, on neurochemical ones). These peculiarities of neurodynamic constitution of the individual are, to a considerable extent, due to the specificity of organization and functioning of a few neurotransmitter (aminergic, in particular) and neurohumoral systems. A number of characteristics of morphological, neurodynamical, and psychodynamical levels of organization of individual personality was studied in five isolated different ethnical populations and two panmixic ones. The degree of heritability was found to decrease and that of variability to increase with the rise of organization level. Significant interpopulational differences were shown in the mean values of characteristics under study and their dispersions. The results obtained were discussed in connection with peculiarities of genetical and social structures of investigated human populations.  相似文献

Averaging of EEG of interstimulus intervals in the process of study of habituation of auditory evoked potentials (EPs) in healthy subjects and patients with endogenous depression, revealed a rhythmic wave process (RWP) especially expressed in patients. RWP appeared and became stronger in successive averaging of 10 realizations completing each of four series of 30 clicks; often (especially in depressive patients) it was manifest in averaging of all 120 realizations with an amplitude comparable with that of main EPs components and even greater. A significant correlation was found of RWP parameters with characteristics of melancholic mood in both subgroups. It is suggested that RWP appears as a result of regular changes of EEG background during multiple stimuli repetition in connection with increased "slow" habituation and in a special manifestation of perceptive defence during depression including mechanisms of active isolation from external world.  相似文献
