We compared six biochemical measures of nutritional condition: citrate synthase activity (CS), malate and lactate dehydrogenase activity (MDH and LDH), RNA:DNA ratio, and percent body protein and lipid. Adult females of five species of calanoid copepod (Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus, Metridia gerlachei, Rhincalanus gigas and Paraeuchaeta antarctica) were collected in the marginal ice zone of the northwestern Weddell Sea at the time of the annual phytoplankton bloom that occurs in association with the receding ice edge during austral spring. Three zones within the marginal ice zone were sampled: heavy-ice-cover pre-bloom, ice-edge bloom and low-ice-cover post-bloom. Lipid generally increased greatly from ice-covered to open water zones, and its importance in the life of polar copepods cannot be overstated. Increases in protein from ice-covered to open water were also observed, but were of less significance. Each species exhibited significant changes in at least one enzyme activity level. Citrate synthase activity in C. acutus, C. propinquus and R. gigas, all herbivores, increased between pre- and post-bloom stations. C. propinquus and M. gerlachei, which feed during winter, had large increases in LDH activity between pre- and post-bloom stations. Rhincalanus gigas and P. antarctica, the two largest species studied, showed variations in MDH activity, with peak enzyme activity occurring in post-bloom stations. RNA:DNA ratio did not change in any species. The effects of size, shipboard handling and freezer storage were easily corrected statistically, and did not alter any conclusions. The patterns observed in copepod nutrition at the Antarctic ice edge were consistent with existing models of life history for each species. The observations reported here, in conjunction with previously reported data, suggested that measurement of metabolic enzyme activity, especially in concert with lipid, enables estimation of nutritional condition in adult copepods. Additional studies comparing metabolic activity and ecology of common species should yield more information on the ecology of rarer species.  相似文献

Phytoplankton samples were collected from ice-covered Utah Lake during February and March, 1979 in order to characterize the winter algal flora. These samples were analyzed for presence and abundance of diatoms and non-diatom algae as well as selected water chemical parameters. A total of 159 diatom taxa and 20 non-diatoms was found in the water column under the ice. The flagellates Carteria stellifera, Euglena gracilis and Chlamydomonas globosa dominated the winter non-diatom flora while Stephanodiscus cf. dubius, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Navicula minima, Fragilaria construens var. venter, and Melosira granulata var. angustissima dominated the winter diatom flora. Species richness and abundance were elevated in the major bays of the lake.  相似文献

Summary During a cruise in the Weddell-Scotia Confluence area (EPOS Leg 2: November–January 1988/1989) nanophytoplankton composition was determined by employing taxon-specific pigment measurements with HPLC. The biomass of the most important components was estimated by using specific pigment ratios measured in cultures of two cryptomonads and a prasinophyte. Highest cryptophyte biomass was found along the retreating ice-edge; the contribution of cryptophytes to total phytoplankton crop increased with time, reaching monospecific bloom conditions at the end of the cruise. Chlorophyll b-containing organisms and Prymnesiophyceae were present everywhere and dominated in the ice-covered part of the survey area. Cryptophyte-specific pigment measurements were in reasonable agreement with cryptophyte cell numbers. Prasinophyte cell counts, however, did not match with measured chlorophyll b concentrations. The quantitative importance of the nanophytoplankton groups reported here underlines the diversity of the plankton in the Southern Ocean's marginal ice zone system which may have implications for food chain dynamics.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

In the Ross Sea, the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis antarctica G. Karst. dominates deeply mixed water columns, while diatoms dominate shallower mixed layers. Understanding what controls the dynamics of these two phytoplankton taxa is essential because they dominate virtually all coastal polar waters, have different nutrient utilization characteristics, and support dissimilar food webs. We cultured two strains of P. antarctica and one strain of the diatom Fragilariopsis cylindrus (Grunow) Willi Krieg under three dynamic irradiance regimes that simulated different mixed‐layer depths and measured their photosynthetic characteristics, cellular pigment concentrations, and cellular carbon and nitrogen content. In both species, chl a–normalized maximum carbon uptake rate (Pm* ) and specific growth rate were highest in the deeply mixed treatment that had a dark period. In all irradiance treatments, both (Pm* ) and photosynthetic efficiency (α*) were greater for the two P. antarctica strains than for the F. cylindrus strain. In contrast, P. antarctica strains were more susceptible to photoinhibition (β*) than the F. cylindrus strain. When photosynthetic rates of each phytoplankton taxon were normalized by cellular particulate organic carbon (POC), the difference in the maximal photosynthetic rate () was generally reduced. In the dynamic irradiance treatment that simulated the shallowest mixed‐layer irradiance, all three phytoplankton had similar ; however, the diatom had a 2‐fold higher POC‐normalized photosynthetic efficiency (αC). Finally, we performed calculations using the measured POC‐normalized photosynthetic parameters to show that αC and can play a greater role than βC in determining the competitive outcome between P. antarctica and F. cylindrus in both shallow and deep mixed‐layer environments of the Ross Sea.  相似文献

We collected data and samples, from June to November of 1999 and 2000, to in situ quantify the abundance of phytoplankton in Boadella reservoir. Samples were taken at different stations along the reservoir and diatoms were persistent in the epilimnion and were the main phytoplankton component, with a peak of abundance up to 5 105 particles ml–1. The diatom growth during the initiation of the summer bloom was high in the reservoir upstream concurrent with maximum Chlorophyll a concentrations. A delay in the onset of the diatom bloom, together with lower values of the volume concentration, was found in 1999 compared to the results in 2000 and was attributed to the different stratification of the reservoir as a result of meteorological conditions. The diatom population sank from the epilimnion by sedimentation and formed aggregates that accumulated at the bottom of the epilimnion. Sedimentation to the hypolimnion occurred at the end of the bloom, where peaks of Chlorophyll a were found.  相似文献

 Diatom composition and biomass were investigated in the nearshore water (<30 m in depth) of Maxwell Bay, Antarctica during the 1992/1993 austral summer. Epiphytic or epilithic diatoms such as Fragilaria striatula, Achnanthes brevipes var. angustata and Licmophora spp. dominated the water column microalgal populations. Within the bay, diatom biomass in surface water was several times higher at the nearshore (2.4–14 μg C l-1) than at the offshore stations (>100 m) (1.2–3.2 μg C l-1) with a dramatic decrease towards the bay mouth. Benthic forms accounted for >90% of diatom carbon in all nearshore stations, while in the offshore stations planktonic forms such as Thalassiosira antarctica predominated (50–>90%). Microscopic examination revealed that many of these diatoms have become detached from a variety of macroalgae growing in the intertidal and shallow subtidal bottoms. Epiphytic diatoms persistently dominated during a 19-day period in the water column at a fixed nearshore station, and the biomass of these diatoms fluctuated from 0.86 to 53 μg C l-1. A positive correlation between diatom biomass and wind speed strongly suggests that wind-driven resuspension of benthic forms is the major mechanism increasing diatom biomass in the water column. Spatial distributional patterns of benthic diatoms and their relation to current velocity were investigated in an unshaded cobble-bottom reach of White Creek (Washington County, NY). On 27 August 1999, diatoms were sampled and current velocity and depth were measured on a regular square sampling grid with a grain size of 0.01 m2, interval of 0.5 m, and extent of 16 m2. The relative abundance of the 18 common diatom species enumerated in the 81 samples was subjected to detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). The first axis (DCA1) explained 51% of the variance in diatom data and separated the samples according to current regimes. The spatial autocorrelation of DCA1 sample scores in deposition and erosion regions of White Creek was determined by Moran's I statistic to indicate patch size. In White Creek the patch length of all diatom communities was more than 3.1 m, whereas the patch width was 1 m in the deposition region and 0.5 m in the erosion region. There were 5 dominant diatom taxa, Achnanthes minutissima Kütz. et vars, Fragilaria capucina Dezmazières et vars, F. crotonensis Kitt., Diatoma vulgaris Bory, and Synedra ulna (Nitz.) Ehr. et vars. The patch length of the dominant species varied from 1 to more than 4.1 m, whereas the patch width, if defined, was 0.5 m. Achnanthes minutissima and F. capucina, the two diatom species with the highest relative abundance, displayed spatially structured patches of low abundance and comparatively random patches of high abundance, suggesting broad scale abiotic control of species performance in low abundance regions and finer scale biotic control of high abundance areas. Another objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that higher current velocities, which generally impede immigration, would increase randomness and complexity (i.e. homogeneity of diatom distributional patterns). The spatial complexity in low versus high velocity transects was determined by calculating the respective fractal dimension (D) of DCA1 scores. D of DCA1 was higher in the higher current velocity transects, suggesting that spatial complexity and homogeneity of diatom communities increased in faster currents. Partial canonical correspondence analysis was conducted on diatom, environmental, and spatial data to assess how much of the variance in species distribution could be attributed to environmental (current velocity and depth) versus spatial factors. The variance of species data, explained by the environment (exclusively current velocity), was 38%; whereas space alone contributed only 10%, indicating that 1) current velocity was the major factor that controlled diatom distribution in streams and 2) there were other spatially dependent variables, most likely biotic, but their role in shaping diatom communities was minor.  相似文献

Summary Two cruises of the ARA/Islas Orcadas (late winter/early spring 1978 and late summer/early fall 1979) provided data which show that temporal variability of phytoplankton biomass and productivity in the oceanic wates of the Southwest Atlantic and Scotia Sea is insignificant when compared to the influence of geographical variability. Two bloom stations sampled during the late winter/early spring cruise had chlorophyll a concentrations and productivity values an order of magnitude higher than waters sampled from the same locations the following late summer/early fall. However, a comparison of 10 paired stations from the two cruises indicated no seasonal trend, as measured values of chlorophyll a and productivity from the first cruise were randomly larger or smaller than values measured during the second cruise. Consideration of individual stations from both seasons suggests the need to re-examine widely held notions regarding the effect of the Polar Front Zone and the island-mass effect on phytoplankton abundance and productivity. Higher-than-expected standing stock and productivity values at some open-ocean stations and at some stations within the Polar Front Zone indicate that looking for specific factors which promote localized enhancement or impoverishment of phytoplankton would be more useful than continuing with attempts to generalize Antarctic productivity data into broad seasonal or geographical patterns.In memory of Mary Alice McWhinnie (1922–1980)  相似文献

Diatoms are an important component of marine biofilms found on ship hulls. However, there are only a few published studies that describe the presence and abundance of diatoms on ships, and none that relate to modern ship hull coatings. This study investigated the diatom community structure on two in-service cruise ships with the same cruise cycles, one coated with an antifouling (AF) system (copper self-polishing copolymer) and the other coated with a silicone fouling-release (FR) system. Biofilm samples were collected during dry docking from representative areas of the ship and these provided information on the horizontal and vertical zonation of the hull, and intact and damaged coating and niche areas. Diatoms from the genera Achnanthes, Amphora and Navicula were the most common, regardless of horizontal ship zonation and coating type. Other genera were abundant, but their presence was more dependent on the ship zonation and coating type. Samples collected from damaged areas of the hull coating had a similar community composition to undamaged areas, but with higher diatom abundance. Diatom fouling on the niche areas differed from that of the surrounding ship hull and paralleled previous studies that investigated differences in diatom community structure on static and dynamically exposed coatings; niche areas were similar to static immersion and the hull to dynamic immersion. Additionally, diatom richness was greater on the ship with the FR coating, including the identification of several new genera to the biofouling literature, viz. Lampriscus and Thalassiophysa. These results are the first to describe diatom community composition on in-service ship hulls coated with a FR system. This class of coatings appears to have a larger diatom community compared to copper-based AF systems, with new diatom genera that have the ability to stick to ship hulls and withstand hydrodynamic forces, thus creating the potential for new problematic species in the biofilm.  相似文献

We investigated the composition, biomass and cell size dynamics of the marine planktonic diatom species along a coastal-open sea gradient in relation to the hydrological characteristics, during four oceanographic cruises in July 2005, May–June 2006, September 2006 and March 2007 in the Gulf of Gabes. The study of the marine planktonic diatoms throughout the sampling period showed the presence of 40 different species belonging to 22 pennate and 18 centric diatom species. Centric diatoms were more abundant than the pennate ones; 56% and 44% of total diatom abundance, respectively. Diatoms were very abundant, representing about 60% of the total phytoplankton abundance, with an exception in July 2005 (19%) during which Dictyochophyceae were the most dominant group (41% of the total phytoplankton abundance). Diatoms, which were dominant in the coastal samples, mainly proliferate in the semi-mixing conditions (May–June 2006), whereas they declined in the offshore area, most likely due to silicate shortage. In this period, in spite of the high abundance of diatom planktonic cells, only diatom biomass was correlated with silica amount, proving that biomass was a better ecological bio-indicator than abundance. The results suggest that the marine planktonic diatoms taxa were generally adapted to specific hydrological structure. In fact, the dominance index of diatoms showed that the biodiversity of diatoms increased gradually along the coastal-open sea gradient except in May–June 2006 during which a slight decrease along the inshore towards offshore areas was observed. This index increase depended on a coastal-open sea distance during thermal stratification (July 2005 and September 2006) and mixing periods (March 2007).  相似文献

Benthic diatoms form a particularly important community in oligotrophic lakes, but factors influencing their distribution are not well known. This study reports the depth distribution of living motile and total diatoms (living plus dead diatoms) on both natural (from sand to fine organic mud) and artificial substrates in an oligotrophic lake. On artificial substrates, motile diatom densities peaked in abundance (24–30 cells · mm?2) between 0.6 and 1.9 m depth; on natural sediment surfaces, motile diatoms were generally more numerous and peaked in abundance (925 cells · mm?2) at 1.3 m depth. Total diatom densities on artificial substrates were highest (1260 valves · mm?2) at 0.6 m depth, with very low values below 3 m depth; on natural sediment surfaces, total diatom abundances were generally much higher (21600 valves · mm?2) at 3 m depth and declined gradually with depth. Significant relationships were found between light and diatom densities on the artificial substrate. Ordination analysis indicated that substrate type significantly correlated with the variation of diatom composition on artificial and natural substrates. Our results suggest that in oligotrophic lakes, light influences benthic diatom abundance, whereas substrate type has more influence on benthic diatom composition.  相似文献

1. Samples for the analysis of attached diatoms and surface water chemistry were taken at thirty-five stations in sixteen soft-water streams in the Netherlands during autumn 1990. Most were located in pine forest and heathland catchments, fed by deep groundwater (median residence time 87 years), with no direct influence of agricultural or urban drainage water. 2. The chemical data from sixteen stations were compared with data collected in 1974 and 1981. There were no significant increases in pH (6.3 in 1974, 6–4 in 1990) or in sulphate (200 mmol m?3 in 1974, 229 mmol m?3 in 1990). Over the same period nitrate increased significantly from 17 to 158 mmol m?3, while alkalinity decreased significantly from 355 to 251 meq m?3. 3. The most important correlates with the distribution of diatoms, as revealed by canonical correspondence analysis, were pH, nitrate, cross-sectional area of the stream and the Ca/(Ca + Cl) ratio. 4. Diatom assemblages of upstream stations indicated more acid conditions than those of downstream stations. Also there was considerable variation in the diatom assemblages of different habitats, 5. A diatom-pH transfer function was developed using the weighted-averaging method. The function was applied to comparable pairs of samples which were collected in 1974 and 1990 at ten stations. There was a significant decrease in the median diatom-inferred pH from 6.78 in 1974 to 6.55 in 1990. 6. The diatom assemblages are diverse and contain a high proportion of filamentous diatoms, particularly Aulacoseira crenulata and A. alpigena, which are rare in Western Europe. This is a response to the low current velocity (median 5 cm?1) and the relatively constant deep groundwater discharge.  相似文献

Phytoplankton data obtained during six summer Polish expeditionsto the Antarctic Peninsula area, are compared with concurrentlyrecorded data on water column stabilities and krill abundance.The results show that flagellates (1.5–20 µm) arenumerically dominant over diatoms in the areas of deep verticalmixing and/or extensive krill concentrations. Of 102 stationsdominated by flagellates, 85 (83.3%) are located in a well mixedwater column (>100 m) and correspond to a mean krill densityof 15–346 t Nm–2. In the same areas, estimated flagellatecarbon biomass exceeds diatom carbon. On the other hand, ofthe 40 stations dominated by diatoms, 36 (90%) are located inareas of increased water column stability (upper mixed layerof 10–50 m) and correspond to a low mean krill biomassof 0.34–4.6 t Nm–2. Positive correlations of flagellateto diatom (F:D) cell number ratios with the depth of the uppermixed layer suggest light limitation of diatom growth and anincreased sinking rate of diatoms relative to flagellates inthe areas of deep vertical mixing. The relationship of the F:Dratio with krill abundance suggests that krill prefer feedingon diatoms and are less efficient in grazing particles of thesize of microflagellates (<20 µm). Flagellates exceeddiatoms in an unstable water column when the phytoplankton populationsare low; both algal groups increase in numbers with growingstability. The results provide field evidence that deep verticalmixing and krill grazing create conditions for the dominanceof flagellates over diatoms. Both factors acting together arelikely to suppress diatom blooms in the Antarctic.  相似文献

Surface diatom samples were collected from two saltmarshes in the Seymour–Belize Inlet Complex on the mainland coast of British Columbia to examine the controls on diatom distribution and provide training sets for regional studies of sea-level change. Cluster analysis and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) were used to examine diatom distributions within and between the two marshes whilst canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and partial canonical correspondence analysis (pCCA) were used to analyse species–environment relationships. The diatom assemblages were shown to be quite different between the two marshes, Waump and Wawwat'l. Q-mode cluster analysis separated the diatom assemblages from Waump into three zones corresponding to recognized vegetation zones; diatom zone C corresponds to the high marsh and is dominated by Pinnularia obscura, Caloneis bacillum and Diploneis ovalis, zone B spans the high- and mid marsh and is characterised by Fragilaria exigua, Nitzchia palea and D. ovalis, whilst zone A from the low marsh/tidal flat includes high frequencies of Diploneis smithii, Ctenophora pulchella and F. exigua. Three different diatom zones were recognised at Wawwat'l; two upper zones, E and F, corresponding to the mid-marsh which are dominated by mixed abundances of N. palea and Fragilaria construens var. venter, Navicula peregrina and Navicula clementis and zone D from the low marsh/tidal flat with increased frequencies of F. exigua and Achnanthes delicatula. At Waump, the major controls on diatom distribution were found to be elevation and to a lesser extent pH, whilst at Wawwat'l, the primary controls were grain size/organic content, conductivity and elevation. The results confirm that saltmarsh diatoms may have potential for future sea-level studies in this region. However, caution must be exercised as the significant difference in the diatom assemblages between the two marshes suggests that the diatoms are responding to a number of environmental variables on a local scale. Some of this variation may reflect highly seasonal changes in sedimentation and salinity resulting from the proximity of the marshes to adjacent streams which are subject to spring freshet. Local differences in elevation between the collected samples may also account for some of the assemblage variability. The results emphasize the great diversity and high sensitivity of intertidal diatom species to environmental controls.  相似文献

Algal communities and export of organic matter from sea ice were studied in the offshore marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the northern Barents Sea and Nansen Basin of the Arctic Ocean north of Svalbard by means of ice cores and short-term deployed sediment traps. The observations cover a total of ten stations within the drifting pack ice, visited over a period of 3 years during the period of ice melt in May and July. Maximum flux of particulate organic carbon and chlorophyll a from the ice at 1 m depth (1,537 mg C m−2 per day and 20 mg Chl a m−2 per day) exceeded the flux at 30 m by a factor of 2 during spring, a pattern that was reversed later in the season. Although diatoms dominated the ice-associated algal biomass, flagellates at times revealed similarly high biomass and typically dominated the exported algal carbon. Importance of flagellates to the vertical flux increased as melting progressed, whereas diatoms made the highest contribution during the early melting stage. High export of ice-derived organic matter and phytoplankton took place simultaneously in the offshore MIZ, likely as a consequence of ice drift dynamics and the mosaic structure of ice-covered and open water characteristic of this region.  相似文献

Diatoms and their associated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are major constituents of the microalgal assemblages present within sea ice. Yields and chemical composition of soluble and cell‐associated polysaccharides produced by three sea‐ice diatoms, Synedropsis sp., Fragilariopsis curta, and F. cylindrus, were compared. Colloidal carbohydrates (CC) contained heteropolysaccharides rich in mannose, xylose, galactose, and glucose. Synedropsis sp. CC consisted mainly of carbohydrates <8 kDa size, with relatively soluble EPS, compared to high proportions of less‐soluble EPS produced by both Fragilariopsis spp. F. curta colloidal EPS contained high concentrations of amino sugars (AS). Both Fragilariopsis species had high yields of hot bicarbonate (HB) soluble EPS, rich in xylose, mannose, galactose, and fucose (and AS in F. cylindrus). All species had frustule‐associated EPS rich in glucose–mannose. Nutrient limitation resulted in declines in EPS yields and in glucose content of all EPS fractions. Significant similarities between EPS fractions from cultures and different components of natural EPS from Antarctic sea ice were found. Increased salinity (52) reduced growth, but increased yields of EPS in Fragilariopsis cylindrus. Ice formation was inhibited byF. cylindrus, EPS, and by enhanced EPS content (additional xanthan gum) down to ?12°C, with growth rate reduced in the presence of xanthan. Differences in the production and composition of EPS between Synedropsis sp. and Fragilariopsis spp., and the association between EPS, freezing and cell survival, supports the hypothesis that EPS production is a strategy to assist polar ice diatoms to survive the cold and saline conditions present in sea ice.  相似文献

Summary A multi-cup sediment trap was deployed at 250m in the shelf area off Kapp Norvegia, Weddell Sea (630 m water depth) to determine the relative importance of water mass advection, sea ice movement, phytoplankton biomass and plankton feeding. Short-term fluctuations in sedimentation were determined using a sampling frequency of 2.7 days over 54 days during January and February 1988. Three periods of enhanced sedimentation were associated with water mass exchange, settling of diatoms following break-up of ice cover and release of fecal matter by krill feeding on particulate matter derived from phytoplankton and ice algae. An initial sedimentation pulse (28 Jan) was mainly due to sinking pelagic diatoms and krill fecal strings containing algae released from sea ice passing over the trap position. The 13C-composition of the sedimented organic carbon was about-24. The isotope ratio decreased sharply by about 5.5 at the end of the first pulse indicating the source of sinking matter becoming pelagic diatoms of the retreating ice-edge. At this time the diatom Corethron criophilum contributed a very high proportion of the organic flux causing an increase of the opal/Corg ratios. The second pulse (6 Feb) was due to empty diatom frustules, minipellets and small planktonic aggregates. Much of the organic carbon was transported by round fecal pellets. During the third pulse (14 Feb), round fecal pellets transported even more; the percentage of C. criophilum to the diatom organic carbon flux was more than 80% (>2mg C m–2 day–1).Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Fragilariopsis is a dominating psychrophilic diatom genus in polar sea ice. The two species Fragilariopsis cylindrus and Fragilariopsis curta are able to grow and divide below freezing temperature of sea water and above average sea water salinity. Here we show that antifreeze proteins (AFPs), involved in cold adaptation in several psychrophilic organisms, are widespread in the two polar species. The presence of AFP genes (afps) as a multigene family indicated the importance of this group of genes for the genus Fragilariopsis, possibly contributing to its success in sea ice. Protein phylogeny showed the potential mobility of afps, which appear to have crossed kingdom and domain borders, occurring in Bacteria, diatoms, crustaceans and fungi. Our results revealed a broad distribution of AFPs not only in polar organisms but also in taxa apparently not related to cold environments, suggesting that these proteins may be multifunctional. The relevance of AFPs to Fragilariopsis was also shown by gene expression analysis. Under stress conditions typical for sea ice, with subzero temperatures and high salinities, F. cylindrus and F. curta strongly expressed selected afps. An E/G point mutation in the Fragilariopsis AFPs may play a role in gene expression activity and protein function.  相似文献

Diatoms are the primary source of nutrition and energy for the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Microalgae, including diatoms, synthesise biological macromolecules such as lipids, proteins and carbohydrates for growth, reproduction and acclimation to prevailing environmental conditions. Here we show that three key species of Southern Ocean diatom (Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Chaetoceros simplex and Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata) exhibited phenotypic plasticity in response to salinity and temperature regimes experienced during the seasonal formation and decay of sea ice. The degree of phenotypic plasticity, in terms of changes in macromolecular composition, was highly species-specific and consistent with each species’ known distribution and abundance throughout sea ice, meltwater and pelagic habitats, suggesting that phenotypic plasticity may have been selected for by the extreme variability of the polar marine environment. We argue that changes in diatom macromolecular composition and shifts in species dominance in response to a changing climate have the potential to alter nutrient and energy fluxes throughout the Southern Ocean ecosystem.  相似文献
