Interspecific interaction may lead to species exclusion but there are several ways in which species can coexist. One way is by reducing the overall intensity of competition via aggregated utilisation of fragmented resources. Known as the 'aggregation model of coexistence', this system assumes saturation and an equilibrium number of species per community. In this study we tested the effects of interspecific aggregation on the level of intraspecific aggregation among ectoparasites of marine fishes (36 communities of gill and head ectoparasite species). If parasite species are distributed in a way that interspecific aggregation is reduced relative to intraspecific aggregation then species coexistence is facilitated. We found a positive relationship between parasite species richness and fish body size, controlling for host phylogeny. A positive relationship between infracommunity species richness and total parasite species richness was also found, providing no evidence for saturation. This result supports the view that infracommunities of parasites are not saturated by local parasite residents. The observed lack of saturation implies that we are far from a full exploitation of the fish resource by parasites. Ectoparasites were aggregated at both population and species levels. However, only half of the ectoparasite communities were dominated by negative interspecific aggregation. We found that infracommunity parasite species richness was positively correlated with the level of intraspecific aggregation versus interspecific aggregation. This means that intraspecific aggregation increases compared with interspecific aggregation when total parasite species richness increases, controlling fish size and phylogeny. This supports one assumption of the 'aggregation model of coexistence', which predicts that interspecific interactions are reduced relative to intraspecific interactions, facilitating species coexistence.  相似文献

The microhabitat distribution of two congeneric species Dactylogyrus carpathicus and D. malleus (Monogenea) parasitizing the gills of the barbel (Barbus barbus L.) was investigated. We tested whether congeneric species exhibited microhabitat preference and whether interspecific interactions could be attributed to the microhabitat segregation of congeners. The outlying mean index method was used to evaluate species microhabitats. Gill variables (different microhabitats within gills) were used as environmental factors characterizing the gills. When abundances of both species were highest, and no significant difference was found between the abundance of the two species, the gill segments and gill areas were the most important factors segregating the Dactylogyrus species on the gills. Niche overlap was low within each of the four gill arches, and parasites were segregated in the same microhabitats within each gill arch. When abundances of both species were low, each monogenean species was segregated at the level of the gill arches. When abundances of both species increased, the niche and overlap between species increased. The distribution of both congeneric species confirmed microhabitat preference within the gills. The results suggest that microhabitat preference is dependent on species abundances, species being segregated in the case of low abundance, possibly to increasing mating opportunities. Both niche and overlap between species increased with species abundance. In the case of the high abundance of both species, microhabitat preference seems to be related to interspecific interactions between monogenean species, as previously found for endoparasitic species.  相似文献

Behavioral, genetic, and immune variation within a host population may lead to aggregation of parasites whereby a small proportion of hosts harbor a majority of parasites. In situations where two or more parasite species infect the same host population there is the potential for interaction among parasites that could potentially influence patterns of aggregation through either competition or facilitation. We studied the occurrence and abundance patterns of two congeneric flea species on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) hosts to test for interactions among parasite species. We live-trapped prairie dogs on ten sites in Boulder County, CO and collected their fleas. We found a non-random, positive association between the two flea species, Oropsylla hirsuta and O. tuberculata cynomuris; hosts with high loads of one flea species had high loads of the second species. This result suggests that there is no interspecific competition among fleas on prairie dog hosts. Host weight had a weak negative relationship to flea load and host sex did not influence flea load, though there were slight differences in flea prevalence and abundance between male and female C. ludovicianus. While genetic and behavioral variation among hosts may predispose certain individuals to infection, our results indicate apparent facilitation among flea species that may result from immune suppression or other flea-mediated factors.  相似文献

The introduction of non‐native species to new locations is a growing global phenomenon with major negative effects on native species and biodiversity. Such introductions potentially bring competitors into contact leading to partial or total species replacements. This creates an opportunity to study novel species interactions as they occur, with the potential to address the strength of inter‐ and intraspecific interactions, most notably competition. Such potential has often not been realized, however, due to the difficulties inherent in detecting rapid and spatially expansive species interactions under natural field conditions. The invasive amphipod crustacean Gammarus pulex has replaced a native species, Gammarus duebeni celticus, in river and lake systems across Europe. This replacement process is at least partially driven by differential parasitism, cannibalism, and intraguild predation, but the role of interspecific competition has yet to be resolved. Here, we examine how abundance of an invasive species may affect spatial niche breadth of a native congeneric species. We base our analyses of niche breadth on ordination and factor analysis of biological community and physical parameters, respectively, constituting a summative, multidimensional approach to niche breadth along environmental gradients. Results derived from biological and environmental niche criteria were consistent, although interspecific effects were stronger using the biological niche approach. We show that the niche breadth of the native species is constrained as abundance of the invader increases, but the converse effect does not occur. We conclude that the interaction between invasive G. pulex and native G. d. celticus under natural conditions is consistent with strong interspecific competition whereby a native, weaker competitor is replaced by a superior invasive competitor. This study indicates a strong role of interspecific competition, alongside other known interactions such as differential intraguild predation, in rapid and expansive species replacements following biological invasions.  相似文献

  1. The role of interspecific interactions in structuring low‐diversity helminth communities is a controversial topic in parasite ecology research. Most parasitic communities of fish are species‐poor; thus, interspecific interactions are believed to be unimportant in structuring these communities.
  2. We explored the factors that might contribute to the richness and coexistence of helminth parasites of a poeciliid fish in a neotropical river.
  3. Repeatability of community structure was examined in parasitic communities among 11 populations of twospot livebearer Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus in the La Antigua River basin, Veracruz, Mexico. We examined the species saturation of parasitic communities and explored the patterns of species co‐occurrence. We also quantified the associations between parasitic species pairs and analyzed the correlations between helminth species abundance to look for repeated patterns among the study populations.
  4. Our results suggest that interspecific competition could occur in species‐poor communities, aggregation plays a role in determining local richness, and intraspecific aggregation allows the coexistence of species by reducing the overall intensity of interspecific competition.

Pollination is thought to be under positive density‐dependence, destabilising plant coexistence by conferring fitness disadvantages to rare species. Such disadvantage is exacerbated by interspecific competition but can be mitigated by facilitation and intraspecific competition. However, pollinator scarcity should enhance intraspecific plant competition and impose disadvantage on common over rare species (negative density‐dependence, NDD). We assessed pollination proxies (visitation rate, pollen receipt, pollen tubes) in a generalised plant community and related them to conspecific and heterospecific density, expecting NDD and interspecific facilitation due to the natural pollinator scarcity. Contrary to usual expectations, all proxies indicated strong intraspecific competition for common plants. Moreover interspecific facilitation prevailed and was stronger for rare than for common plants. Both NDD and interspecific facilitation were modulated by specialisation, floral display and pollinator group. The combination of intraspecific competition and interspecific facilitation fosters plant coexistence, suggesting that pollination can be a niche axis maintaining plant diversity.  相似文献

基于对山西陵川县境内野生南方红豆杉群落的样地调查,采用总体相关性VR检验、Pearson相关系数、Spearman秩相关系数和生态位测度方法,在群落尺度上对南方红豆杉群落的种间联结性和生态位特征进行了研究。结果显示:(1)南方红豆杉(Taxus chinensis(Pilger)Rehd.var.mairei(Lemee et Levl.)Cheng et L.K.Fu)、荆条(Vitex negundo L.var.heterophylla(Franch.)Rehd.)、鹅耳枥(Carpinus turczaninowii Hance)、连翘(Forsythia suspensa(Thunb.)Vahl)和三裂绣线菊(Spiraea trilobata L.)的重要值和生态位宽度较大,为群落中的建群种和优势种;(2)物种间生态位重叠指数总体偏高,种间竞争较强,尤其是南方红豆杉与其他物种之间;(3)群落总体呈显著负联结,大多数种对间呈中性关联(χ23.84,P0.05);(4)群落中物种间的Pearson相关系数、Spearman秩相关系数与生态位重叠指数之间表现为极显著的正相关(P0.01),而生态位宽度与生态位重叠指数之间未表现出线性关系,即物种间的竞争关系随种间关联性的增大而增强,而与生态位宽度没有直接关系。本研究可为保护和利用本区现有野生南方红豆杉资源提供合理的理论支撑。  相似文献

Ecological niche construction, the process whereby an organism improves its environment to enhance its growth and persistence, is an important missing element of niche theory. Niche theory has mainly focused on niche-deteriorating processes, such as resource consumption, predation and competition, which have negative effects on population growth. Here, we integrate niche construction explicitly into modern niche theory. We use a graphical approach to analyse how a species' niche-improving impacts interplay with niche-deteriorating impacts to modify its response to the environment. In a model of two consumers that compete for one limiting resource and one predator, we show how niche construction modifies the traditional niche-deteriorating impacts of its agent or of competing species, and hence the potential for species coexistence. By altering the balance between intraspecific and interspecific competitive effects, niche construction can either generate net interspecific facilitation or strengthen interspecific competition. The adaptive benefit derived from niche construction also strongly affects the realized niche of a niche-constructing species.  相似文献

A negative interspecific correlation between the degree of habitat specialization and the size of a species' geographic range has been documented for several free living groups of organisms, providing support for the niche breadth hypothesis. In contrast, practically nothing is known about the geographic range sizes of parasitic organisms and their determinants. In the context of the niche breadth hypothesis, parasites represent ideal study systems, because of the well documented variation in host specificity among parasite species. Here, we investigated the relationship between host specificity (a measure of niche breadth) and geographic range size among flea species parasitic on small mammals, using data from seven distinct geographical regions. Two measures of host specificity were used: the number of host species used by a flea species, and a measure of the average taxonomic distance between the host species used by a flea; the latter index provides an evolutionary perspective on host specificity. After correcting for phylogenetic influences, and using either of our two measures of host specificity, the degree of host specificity of fleas was negatively correlated with the size of their geographic range in all seven regions studied here, with only one minor exception. Overall, these results provide strong support for the niche breadth hypothesis, although other explanations cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

The aggregation of parasites among individual hosts is one of the best documented features of parasite populations; we still do not know, however, why certain parasite species are more highly aggregated than other, related species. Here we search for a general explanation of interspecific variation in aggregation levels, based on the relationship between parasite body size and fecundity, transmission success, and intensity-dependent population regulation. We test the prediction that larger-bodied parasite species are more weakly aggregated than smaller-bodied related species, in a comparative analysis across parasitic nematode species. Across species, the variance-to-mean abundance ratio correlated negatively and significantly with nematode body sizes, as predicted. All other tests, however, including the more robust analyses controlling for phylogenetic influences, failed to support this result. This is mainly because the variance in infection levels is almost completely explained by mean parasite abundance. For this reason, it may prove difficult to identify a general biological explanation for interspecific variability in aggregation levels among parasites.  相似文献

Dactylogyrid species (Monogenea) communities were studied in roach, Rutilus rutilus, collected from two localities in the basin of Morava river, Czech Republic, during the period from April to November 1997 and March to September 1998 to determine the effect of water temperature on parasite abundance, species richness and diversity. Dactylogyrid species were found to co-occur on the gills of roach with up to six species found on the same host individual. Nine dactylogyrid species were identified with the abundance of each reaching a very low level. Niche size was considered to increase with species abundance even when water temperature was high. There was a strong effect of water temperature on abundance of the common dactylogyrid species (D. crucifer, D. nanus, D. rutili and D. suecicus) as well as of the rare species D. rarissimus. The temporary occurrence of the rare species was found without any temperature effect. Water temperature did not affect the relationship between abundance and niche size. Niche size increased with abundance, even when the water temperature was high, which suggests that negative interspecific interactions are not important within dactylogyrid communities.  相似文献

Dactylogyrus species (Dactylogyridae: Monogenea) are a group of monogenean gill parasites that are highly specific to freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae. Dactylogyrus species were sampled from 19 cyprinids and one percid collected in Europe. Using partial 18S rDNA and ITS1 sequences, a phylogeny of 51 Dactylogyrus species was reconstructed to investigate the patterns of parasite speciation and diversification. Three main Dactylogyrus lineages were recognized from all phylogenetic trees, that is, analysis of 18S rDNA alone and combined 18SrDNA and ITS1. The first lineage associates the Dactylogyrus species of Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus of the Cyprininae; the second associates Dactylogyrus species of the Gobioninae, Pseudorasbora parva of the Rasborinae, and Ctenopharyngodon idella of the Cyprininae; and the third associates Dactylogyrus species of the Leuciscinae and Alburninae and Barbus barbus of the Cyprininae. Our results suggest that the genus Dactylogyrus is of quite recent origin and that these three lineages separated from each other in a very short period of time. Host subfamily mapping onto the parasite tree inferred from analysis of the combined dataset showed that the Cyprininae could be plesiomorphic hosts for Dactylogyrus. Dactylogyrus parasites would have secondarily colonized the Percidae and representatives of the Leuciscinae, Alburninae, Gobioninae, and Rasborinae. Comparison of host and parasite phylogenetic relationships indicated that a very high number of parasite duplications occurred within two of the three Dactylogyrus lineages. Dactylogyrus diversification can be mainly explained by sympatric intrahost speciation events that seem to be correlated to strict host specificity. Moreover, the present study shows that the congeneric parasites speciating within one host tend to occupy niches within hosts differing at least in one niche parameter.  相似文献

Larval helminths often share intermediate hosts with other individuals of the same or different species. Competition for resources and/or conflicts over transmission routes are likely to influence both the association patterns between species and the life history strategies of each individual. Parasites sharing common intermediate hosts may have evolved ways to avoid or associate with other species depending on their definitive host. If not, individual parasites could develop alternative life history strategies in response to association with particular species. Three sympatric species of helminths exploit the amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis as an intermediate host in New Zealand: the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus galaxii, the trematode Microphallus sp. and the progenetic trematode Coitocaecum parvum. Adult A. galaxii and C. parvum are both fish parasites whereas Microphallus sp. infects birds. We found no association, either positive or negative, among the three parasite species. The effects of intra- and interspecific interactions were also measured in the trematode C. parvum. Both intra- and interspecific competition seemed to affect both the life history strategy and the size and fecundity of C. parvum. Firstly, the proportion of progenesis was higher in metacercariae sharing their host with Microphallus sp., the bird parasite, than in any other situation. Second, the intensity of intraspecific competition apparently constrained the ability of metacercariae to adopt progenesis and limited both the growth and egg production of progenetic individuals. These results show that the life history strategy adopted by a parasite may be influenced by other parasites sharing the same host.  相似文献

Across species, abundance usually correlates negatively with body size. This intuitive pattern may result from size-dependent resource requirements in habitats where only finite amounts of resources are available. Among parasite species, it is possible that some resource limitations arc less severe than for free-living animals although this may depend on the type of parasites. The interspecific relationship between body size and abundance (measured as prevalence and intensity of infection) among parasites was tested in two groups of parasites. Among helminth endoparasites of fish, parasite body size correlated positively with prevalence and negatively with intensity of infection. Among copepod ectoparasites of fish, body size correlated positively with both prevalence and intensity. These trends were observed after controlling for the confounding influences of phylogeny and sampling effort. These contrasting patterns may result from the more intense link between body size and intensity-dependent regulation in endoparasites than in ectoparasites. The results of this comparative analysis suggest that parasite body size could be an important factor determining aspects of parasite abundance and distribution, including aggregation.  相似文献

Multiple niche‐based processes including conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) determine plant regeneration and community structure. We ask how interspecific and intraspecific density‐dependent interactions relate to plant life histories and associated functional traits. Using hierarchical models, we analysed how such interactions affected first‐year survival of seedling recruits of 175 species in a tropical forest, and how species abundances and functional traits are related to interspecific variation in density‐dependent effects. Conspecific seedling neighbour effects prevailed over the effects of larger conspecific and all heterospecific neighbours. Tolerance of seedling CNDD enhanced recruit survival and subsequent abundance, all of which were greater among larger seeded, slow‐growing and well‐defended species. Niche differentiation along the growth–survival trade‐off and tolerance of seedling CNDD strongly correlated with regeneration success, with manifest consequences for community structure. The ability of larger seeded species to better tolerate CNDD suggests a novel mechanism for CNDD to contribute to seed‐size variation and promote species coexistence through a tolerance–fecundity trade‐off.  相似文献

通过分析不同择伐强度下思茅松(Pinus kesiya)天然林乔木种群的生态位、种间联结、种内与种间竞争和群落稳定性, 探讨干扰强度对思茅松天然林乔木种群种间与种内关系的影响。结果表明: (1)择伐干扰改变了大多数乔木树种在群落中的优势地位, 思茅松优势地位未受影响, 随着择伐干扰强度的增加, 思茅松在群落中的生态位宽度逐渐变大, 在重度干扰的群落中与红木荷(Schima wallichii)一起成为生态幅度最大的树种。(2)通过种间联结与生态位重叠分析发现, 随着干扰强度的加剧, 乔木种群的种间关系发生变化, 中度干扰群落中物种之间的生态位重叠明显高于未干扰和重度干扰群落, 而在三类群落中, 思茅松与其他种群之间的重叠值较小。随着干扰强度增加, 种群间正联结与负联结的种对所占的比例逐渐增加。(3) Hegyi竞争指数表明, 三类群落中思茅松种群的竞争压力主要来自种间, 而干扰强度进一步增加了思茅松种群的种间竞争强度, 其种内平均竞争指数随着对象木胸径的增加而减少。(4)林窗是思茅松种群种间和种内关系变化的主要原因, 三类群落都处于较不稳定的阶段, 但中度干扰群落的物种丰富度与稳定性都高于未干扰和重度干扰的群落。择伐原则依据森林管理的目的而确定, 如以木材培育为主或森林生态系统服务功能为主。  相似文献

根据2006—2007年北部湾北部海域4个航次调查资料,采用K-优势度曲线法对浮游动物种(类)群进行排序分析,运用Levins公式和Pianka指数分析了主要优势种(类)群的生态位宽度值和生态位重叠程度,并通过除趋势典范对应分析(DCCA)研究生态位分化状况。结果表明,该海区浮游动物优势种(类)群按生态位宽度值可划分为广生态位、中生态位和窄生态位三大类型。其中,广生态位的种(类)群如肥胖软箭虫、亚强次真哲水蚤、长尾类幼体等具有较强的生态适应性,生活范围较广;窄生态位的种(类)群,对环境的适应性较差,对海流和水团等环境因素的变化具有指示意义。生态位宽度能够反映种(类)群丰度季节变化,但不能反映具体丰度大小。北部湾北部全年主要优势种(类)群的生态位宽度值介于0.08—0.77之间,并且各优势种(类)群的生态位宽度差异较大,种对间生态位重叠值介于0.02—0.89之间,平均生态位重叠指数为0.45,种(类)群之间利用资源环境的互补性较强,这与海域内生境多样化并且各优势种对环境适应能力的差异存在一定联系。DCCA分析表明,影响浮游动物分布的主要因子是水深、温度和盐度,其次是叶绿素a和溶解氧。  相似文献

采用Levins,Shannon-Wiener生态位宽度公式和Levins生态位特定重叠指数公式对皇甫川流域天然草地恢复演替不同阶段植物群落中优势种生态位宽度和生态位重叠进行了测定,并分析各种群生态位宽度和生态位重叠的生态学意义。结果表明:演替过程中每一群落类型的优势种具有最大的生态位宽度;生态位宽度在演替序列的动态变化与种群动态有较好的对应关系;生态位重叠越大,种群间的生态相似性越大,利用资源的相似性程度越高,种间竞争可能越激烈;竞争是促使流域内各植物群落向顶级群落演替的一种动力机制。  相似文献

Spatial niche breadth and overlap of size groups of four species of epilithic stream insects were studied to determine if broad size frequency distributions serve to reduce intraspecific competition for space. Mean niche overlap decreased with greater breadth of size frequency distributions for only one species (Baetis intercalaris) and did not vary in relation to population density. Similarly, the ratio of the probabilities of intergroup and intragroup encounter did not vary as a function of the breadth of size frequency distributions. Therefore, it was concluded that changes in size frequency distribution have a minimal effect on intraspecific competition for space among epilithic species. It was suggested that observed size frequency distributions may be more a function of extant environmental conditions (temperature and flow) than of previous or extant intraspecific competition.  相似文献
