Boron application at proper concentration is necessary to enhance the leaf gas exchange, physiological growth, reproductive development and nutritional improvement of crops. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to study the effects of boron to evaluate the effect on the leaf gas exchange, reproductive development, physiological and nutritional changes of peanut. Treatments comprised six levels of boron (B), viz., B1 (0?ppm), B2 (0.5?ppm), B3 (1?ppm), B4 (2?ppm), B5 (4?ppm) and B6 (8?ppm). Results revealed that the vegetative growth, physiological growth parameters, leaf gas exchange, reproductive characters, peg strength, shelling (%) and nutritional elements were increased for boron application. Some vegetative, physiological and reproductive traits are positively correlated with each other. Thus, this finding showed that boron can be used to culture peanut as it provides high yield and nutritional properties.  相似文献

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum), lentil (Lens esculenta) and lupin (Lupinus albus) responded to inoculation with their respective symbiotants:Rhizobium loti, Rhizobium leguminosarum biovarviceae andBradyrhizobium sp. (Lupinus) alone or with (NH4)2SO4 at 30 ppm N. Soil application of Na2MoO4.2H2O at 3 ppm Mo, CoCl2.6H2O at 2 ppm Co2+ or Na2B4O7.10H2O at 1 ppm B with 0 and 30 ppm N increased nodule weight and plant dry weight and N-content 60 days after sowing and seed yield, seed size and the N and P contents of seed. Nodule numbers slightly decreased with application of such chemicals. Mo enhanced performance of the three plants more than Co and B. Yield, total N and P-contents of lupin were comparable with those of chickpea or lentil and lupin had the highest levels of both N2-fixation and N absorption from the fertilizer. IndigenousR. leguminosarum biovarviceae was more established in the soil compared with the other two, chickpea and lupin, micropartners.  相似文献

Defining and quantifying biomass?Cdensity relationships in dense plant stands has been a long-standing issue in both theoretical and empirical studies. Most existing/traditional studies focus on whole plant individuals, without considering different plant components (e.g., stem, branch and leaf). However, the analysis of biomass?Cdensity relationships for different plant parts is linked to those for whole plants, and thus important for understanding plant strategies for utilizing resources and community dynamics. In our study, we investigated standing stem (M S), branch (M B) and leaf (M L) biomass?Cdensity relationships, across a range of forest communities in China. The results showed that there was no constant predicted value (e.g., ?1/2 or ?1/3 for M S; ?1/2, ?1/3 or 0 for M B and M L) that can describe all the relationships, and that the scaling exponents for stem, branch and leaf biomass varied across different forest types. In particular, standing leaf biomass (leaf biomass per unit area) was not constant in these forest communities. Furthermore, stem biomass?Cdensity lines were steeper than corresponding branch and leaf lines across most of these forest communities.  相似文献

Male Wistar rats (12 rats/group) were fed a diet containing 8 wt % coconut oil or groundnut oil or cod-liver oil for a total period of 8 weeks. The diets were also supplemented with 2 wt % groundnut oil for providing essential fatty acids. During the last 2 weeks, 6 rats form each group were additionally given curcumin (30 mg/kg body wt/day) or capsaicin (5 mg/kg body wt/day) in 1 ml groundnut oil. The peritoneal macrophages from rats fed cod-liver oil diet secreted lower levels of lysosomal enzymes collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase as compared to those from rats fed coconut oil or groundnut oil diets. Curcumin and capsaicin significantly lowered the secretion of these lysosomal enzymes from macrophages in animals given coconut oil or groundnut oil diet. Macrophages from rats fed cod-liver oil secreted lower amounts of prostaglandin E2, 6-keto PGF1a, leukotrienes B4and C4and also incorporated lesser amounts of [3H]-arachidonic acid as compared to those given coconut oil or groundnut oil diets. Curcumin and capsaicin lowered the secretion of these eicosanoids and decreased the incorporation of [3H]-arachidonic acid in macrophage lipids. However curcumin and capsaicin significantly increased the secretion of 6-keto PGF1ain all the groups of animals. These studies indicated that dietary cod-liver oil (rich in n-3 fatty acids), and spice principles curcumin and capsaicin can lower the secretory functions of macrophages in a beneficial manner.  相似文献

Summary Recently matured leaf samples were collected, at 45, 60 and 75 days after planting, from potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants of cultivar Kufri sindhuri grown with varying levels of nitrogen (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg N/ha) and phosphorus (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg P2O5/ha) on loam soil at Pantnagar. They were separated into petiole, midrib and leaf-lets and analysed for NO3-N content. Petiole samples were also analysed for PO4-P content. Nitrogen application increased the NO3-N content of all the leaf components. P application increased the PO4-P content in petiole. NO3-N content and PO4-P content in leaf tissues were positively correlated with final tuber yield. The association of NO3-N content of petiole with the final tuber yield was very consistant. Hence this proved to be the best indicator tissue for reflecting the nitrogen status of the plant, particularly at 45 days after planting. NO3-N content of midrib, at this stage, was also a good indication of nitrogen nutrition status of the plant. PO4-P content of petiole at 45 days after planting was a good indication of nutritional status of plant with respect to phosphorus. The critical concentration of NO3-N in petioles of 45 days old plants was in the range of 9100–9600 ppm. The corresponding range for midrib was 3000 to 3900 ppm. The critical concentration of PO4-P for petioles of 45 days old plants was 2250 ppm.Publication No 796 under journal series of the G.B. Abstract

The boron heterocyclic compound dipotassium-trioxohydroxytetrafluorotriborate (K2[B3O3F4OH]) was investigated as inhibitor of the zinc enzyme, carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1). Eleven human (h) CA isoforms, hCA I–IV, VA, VI, VII, IX and XII–XIV, were included in the investigations. The anion, similar to tetraborate or phenylboronic acid, inhibited most of them. hCA III was not inhibited by K2[B3O3F4OH], whereas hCA VA, hCA VI, hCA IX and hCA XIII were inhibited in the submillimolar range, with KIs of 0.31–0.63?mM. hCA I and II (cytosolic, widespread isoforms), hCA IV (membrane-bound isoform), hCA XII (tumor-associated, transmembrane) and hCA XIV (transmembrane) were much more effectively inhibited by this anion, with inhibition constants ranging from 25 to 93?µM. hCA VII, a cytosolic enzyme present in the brain and associated to oxidative stress, was very effectively inhibited by K2[B3O3F4OH], with a KI of 8.0?µM. We propose that K2[B3O3F4OH] binds to the metal ion from the enzyme active site, coordinating to the Zn(II) ion monodentately through its B-OH functionality. We hypothesize that some of the beneficial antitumor effects reported for K2[B3O3F4OH] may be due to the inhibition of CAs present in skin tumors.  相似文献

Purified preparations of the luteovirus, groundnut rosette assistor virus (GRAV), were made by treatment of groundnut leaf extracts with cellulase, followed by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Yields of virus particles were about 0·5-1·0 mg/kg leaf material. The preparations contained isometric particles c. 28 nm in diameter with a sedimentation coefficient (s20, w) of 115 S, a buoyant density in Cs2SO4 of 1·34 g/cm3, and A260/A280 of 1·86. The particles contained a single species of nucleic acid (presumably RNA), of mol. wt 2·09 × 106and with no detectable polyadenylate sequence, and a single protein species, of mol. wt 24 × 103. An antiserum produced in a rabbit had a titre of 1/256 in gel diffusion tests and detected GRAV in leaf extracts by ELISA. GRAV particles reacted in F(ab')2-ELISA and immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM) tests with antisera to bean leaf roll, potato leafroll and tobacco necrotic dwarf luteoviruses, but did not react with antisera to carrot red leaf luteovirus.  相似文献

A single material that can perform water oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), also called bifunctional catalyst, represents a novel concept that emerged from recent materials research and that has led to applications in new‐generation energy‐storage systems, such as regenerative fuel cells. Here, metal/metal‐oxide free, doped graphene derived from rhombohedral boron carbide (B4C) is demonstrated to be an effective bifunctional catalyst for the first time. B4C, one of the hardest materials in nature next to diamond and cubic boron nitride, is converted and separated in bulk to form heteroatom (boron, B) doped graphene (BG, yield ≈7% by weight, after the first cycle). This structural conversion of B4C to graphene is accompanied by in situ boron doping and results in the formation of an electrochemically active material from a non‐electrochemically active material, broadening its potential for application in various energy‐related technologies. The electrocatalytic efficacy of BG is studied using various voltammetric techniques. The results show a four‐electron transfer mechanism as well as a high methanol tolerance and stability towards ORR. The results are comparable to those from commercial 20 wt% Pt/C in terms of performance. Furthermore, the bifunctionality of the BG is also demonstrated by its performance in water oxidation.  相似文献

Summary 1. It was shown that boron is an essential micro-element forAzotobacter chroococcum.2. Multiplication, CO2 production, N fixation and pigmentation are closely related to the boron content of the culture medium. Of these, pigmentation is most susceptible to slight boron deficiency; with an easily assimilable carbon source (mannite, glucose) nitrogen fixation seems to be more susceptible than multiplication to boron deficiency.3. With increasing gifts of boron, the CO2 production curves in quartz sand with nutrients as well as in liquid cultures follow each other at regular sequences.4. The optimum boron content for normal development ofAzotobacter amounts toca 2 ppm in liquid cultures, to 5 ppm in quartz sand cultures, whereas in soils sometimes 8 ppm B are tolerated, without noticeable loss of activity.  相似文献

Aims

Soil pH is known to influence many important biochemical processes in plants and soils, however its role in salinity—boron interactions affecting plant growth and ion relations has not been examined. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the interactive effects of salinity, boron and soil solution pH on broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) growth, yield, consumptive water use and shoot-boron accumulation.

Methods

A greenhouse experiment was conducted using a sand tank system where salinity-B-pH treatment solutions were supplemented with a complete nutrient solution. Sulfate-dominated irrigation waters, characteristic of groundwater in California’s San Joaquin valley (SJV), were tested at EC levels of 2, 5, 8, 11 and 14 dS?m?1. Each salinity treatment consisted of two boron treatments (0.5 and 21 mg?L?1) and each of those treatments was tested under slightly basic (pH?8.0) and slightly acidic (pH?6.0) conditions.

Results

Results included multiple salinity-boron-pH interactions affecting shoot biomass, head yield and consumptive water use. Broccoli fresh head yields were significantly reduced by salinity and boron, but the degree of yield reductions was influenced by pH. Relative head yields were substantially reduced in treatments with high pH and high B, particularly under low and high salinity where head yields were decreased by 89 % and 96 %, respectively, relative to those at low salinity and low boron. Intermediate levels of salinity were far less damaging. Increased salinity and boron reduced evapotranspiration (ET) and there were no salinity-boron associated interactions on ET. However, increased salinity and boron concentrations increased water use efficiency (shoot biomass/cumulative volume ET). Shoot B concentration increased with increased boron and was greater at pH?6 as compared to pH?8. Shoot boron concentration decreased with increasing salinity at both pH levels but particularly at the high substrate boron concentration.

Conclusions

It is likely that different mechanisms, yet unknown, are responsible for severe head-yield reductions at low and high salinity in the presence of high boron under alkaline conditions. We found that boron in the shoot did not accumulate by a simple passive process. Rather as boron increased from 0.5 to 21 mg?L?1, there was a restrictive mechanism where total shoot boron (mg plant?1) was reduced by 10 to 40 times the amount potentially supplied to the shoot by passive transport via mass flow perhaps involving complex interactions with membrane channels and B exporters. Total shoot boron concentration was a poor indicator of plant growth response.  相似文献

Aim

Effects of elevated CO2 on N relations are well studied, but effects on other nutrients, especially micronutrients, are not. We investigated effects of elevated CO2 on response to variation in boron (B) availability in three unrelated species: seed geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), and water fern (Azolla caroliniana).

Methods

Plants were grown at two levels of CO2 (370, 700?ppm) and low, medium, and high B. Treatment effects were measured on biomass, net photosynthesis (Pn) and related variables, tissue nutrient concentrations, and B transporter protein BOR1.

Results

In geranium, there were interactive effects (P?<?0.05) of B and CO2 on leaf, stem, and total plant mass, root:shoot ratio, leaf [B], B uptake rate, root [Zn], and Pn. Elevated CO2 stimulated growth at 45?μM B, but decreased it at 450?μM B and did not affect it at 4.5?μM B. Pn was stimulated by elevated CO2 only at 45?μM B and chlorophyll was enhanced only at 450?μM B. Soluble sugars increased with high CO2 only at 4.5 and 45?μM B. High CO2 decreased leaf [B] and B uptake rate, especially at 450?μM B. Though CO2 and B individually affected the concentration of several other nutrients, B x CO2 interactions were evident only for Zn in roots, wherein [Zn] decreased under elevated CO2. Interactive effects of B and CO2 on growth were confirmed in (1) barley grown at 0, 30, or 1,000?μM B, wherein growth at high CO2 was stimulated more at 30?μM B, and (2) Azolla grown at 0, 10, and 1,000?μM B, wherein growth at high CO2 was stimulated at 0 and 10?μM B.

Conclusion

Thus, low and high B both may limit growth stimulation under elevated vs. current [CO2], and B deficiency and toxicity, already common, may increase in the future.  相似文献

Recently it was found that dipotassium-trioxohydroxytetrafluorotriborate, K2(B3O3F4OH), is a potent and highly specific inhibitor of precancerous cell processes. We conducted gene expression profiling of human melanoma cells before and after treatment with two concentrations (0.1 and 1?mM) of this boron inorganic derivative in order to assess its effects on deregulation of genes associated with tumor pathways. Parallel trypan blue exclusion assay was performed to assess the cytotoxicity effects of this chemical. Treatment with K2(B3O3F4OH) induced a significant decrease of cell viability in melanoma cellline at both tested concentrations. Furthermore, these treatments caused deregulation of more than 30 genes known as common anti-tumor drug targets. IGF-1 and hTERT were found to be significantly downregulated and this result may imply potential use of K2(B3O3F4OH) as an inhibitor or human telomerase and insulin-like growth factor 1, both of which are associated with various tumor pathways.  相似文献

Fumonisin B1 (FB1), a mycotoxin produced byFusarium moniliforme andF. proliferatum, induces liver damage and pulmonary edema in swine. We examined the temporal and dose-response features of FB1 toxicosis in male weanling crossbred pigs fed nutritionally balanced diets, containing corn screenings naturally contaminated with fumonisins, for 14 days. Total fumonisins (FB1 and FB2) in diets 1 through 6 were assayed at 175, 101, 39, 23, 5, and <1 ppm (below detectable concentrations), respectively. Clinical signs, serum biochemical alterations, and morphologic changes were evaluated. Pigs were weighed, and bled for hematologic and clinical chemistry evaluation on days 5 and 14. They were euthanized on day 14, or earlier if respiratory distress was observed. Respiratory distress developed in 3/5 pigs fed diet 1 between days 4 and 6 due to severe pulmonary edema and pleural effusion. Histologic evidence of hepatic injury was present in all pigs fed diets 1 and 2, 3/5 on diet 3, and 1/5 on diet 4. Serum bilirubin and cholesterol concentrations, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and arginase (ARG) activities were elevated in pigs fed diets 1 and 2. Based on liver histopathology, the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for fumonisin toxicity in swine was <23 ppm total fumosins for the 14-day period. Based on regression analyses of the clinical chemistry profiles at 14 days, the NOAEL was <12 ppm, with ALP being the most sensitive parameter. In conclusion, pulmonary edema occurred only at the highest fumonisin concentration (175 ppm), while liver damage occurred at much lower concentrations with a NOAEL of <12 ppm.Abbreviations ALP alkaline phosphatase - ALT alanine aminotransferase - ARG arginase - AST aspartate aminotransferase - ELEM equine leukoencephalomalacia - FB1 fumonisin B1 - GGT gamma-glutamyl transferase - NOAEL no observed adverse effect level  相似文献

Without new innovations, present rates of increase in yields of food crops globally are inadequate to meet the projected rising food demand for 2050 and beyond. A prevailing response of crops to rising [CO2] is an increase in leaf area. This is especially marked in soybean, the world's fourth largest food crop in terms of seed production, and the most important vegetable protein source. Is this increase in leaf area beneficial, with respect to increasing yield, or is it detrimental? It is shown from theory and experiment using open‐air whole‐season elevation of atmospheric [CO2] that it is detrimental not only under future conditions of elevated [CO2] but also under today's [CO2]. A mechanistic biophysical and biochemical model of canopy carbon exchange and microclimate (MLCan) was parameterized for a modern US Midwest soybean cultivar. Model simulations showed that soybean crops grown under current and elevated (550 [ppm]) [CO2] overinvest in leaves, and this is predicted to decrease productivity and seed yield 8% and 10%, respectively. This prediction was tested in replicated field trials in which a proportion of emerging leaves was removed prior to expansion, so lowering investment in leaves. The experiment was conducted under open‐air conditions for current and future elevated [CO2] within the Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment facility (SoyFACE) in central Illinois. This treatment resulted in a statistically significant 8% yield increase. This is the first direct proof that a modern crop cultivar produces more leaf than is optimal for yield under today's and future [CO2] and that reducing leaf area would give higher yields. Breeding or bioengineering for lower leaf area could, therefore, contribute very significantly to meeting future demand for staple food crops given that an 8% yield increase across the USA alone would amount to 6.5 million metric tons annually.  相似文献

Two hundred twenty-eight male chicks (Columbia × New Hampshire) were given feed amended with autoclaved culture material (CM) ofFusarium proliferatum Containing fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2) and moniliformin in 3 separate feeding trials. Purified FB1 and moniliformin were given separately and in combination in a fourth feeding trial. Birds were given amended rations at day 1 (Trial 1 and 4), day 7 (Trial 2), and day 21 (Trial 3) and their respective ration was given for 28 days (Trial 1), 21 days (Trial 2), 7 days (Trial 3), and 14 days (Trial 4). FB1 concentrations were 546, 193, and 61 ppm; FB2 were 98, 38 and 14 ppm; and moniliformin were 367, 193, and 66 ppm in the first 3 feeding trial regimens. Chicks in Trial 4 were given dietary concentrations of purified FB1 at 274 and 125 ppm, and moniliformin at 154 and 27 ppm. FB1 and moniliformin, both alone and in combination, produced dose-responsive clinical signs, reduced weight gains and mortality in chicks. Age of birds given amended feeds had little difference in the clinical response; however, those given the rations from days 7 or 21 were slightly less susceptible than those given rations beginning at 1 day of age. Additive effects were noted when the toxins were given in combination. When toxins were given separately, adverse effects took longer to occur. A system to monitor pattern and rate of defecation (RD) was developed for assessing the chicks' approach to feed, water and heat source as illness progressed. Our results indicate that chicks fed corn heavily infected withF. proliferatum under field conditions could suffer acute death similar to that described for spiking mortality syndrome during the first 3 weeks of age.  相似文献

Aflatoxin-lysine (AFB1-lys) adduct levels in blood samples collected from 230 individuals living in three districts of Malawi (Kasungu, Mchinji, and Nkhotakota) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) levels in groundnut and maize samples collected from their respective homesteads were determined using indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IC-ELISA) methods. AFB1-lys adducts were detected in 67% of blood samples, with a mean concentration of 20.5?±?23.4 pg/mg of albumin. AFB1 was detected in 91% of groundnut samples and in 70% of maize samples, with mean AFB1 levels of 52.4 and 16.3 μg/kg, respectively. All participants of this study reported consuming maize on a daily basis and consuming groundnuts regularly (mean consumption frequency per week: 3.2?±?1.7). According to regression analysis, a frequency of groundnut consumption of more than four times per week, being female, and being a farmer were significant (p?<?0.05) contributors to elevated AFB1-lys adduct levels in the blood. This is the first report on AFB1-lys adducts in blood samples of residents in Malawi. The results reinforce the urgent need for interventions, aiming at a reduction of aflatoxin exposure of the population.  相似文献

The frequency distribution of diameter (x) in foliage shoot segments, ø(x), was examined in 18 branches at different height levels of three trees in a 25-yr-old sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantation. The ø-x relationships were approximated by power-form equations, in which the exponent differed among the branches from ?0.6 to ?4.2. Leaf area (S B) and leaf weight (W B) of a branch were estimated on the basis of the ø-x relationship, and the dependency of specific leaf area (SLA 0) and density (ρ 0) of a foliage shoot segment on itsx. SLA B value of a branch defined byS B/W B ranged from 27 to 80 cm2 g. d.w.?1 according to the exponent in the function of ø(x). Total leaf area (u) and leaf weight (wl) of a tree were estimated by summation ofS B andW B for seven sample trees. TheSLA T value of a tree defined byu/wl ranged from 65 to 76 cm2 g d.w.?1 and increased with stem diameter at clear length (D B). By use of the allometric equations betweenu andD B,LAI of the plot was estimated to be 17.3 ha ha?1 (half of the total surface area of needles). By a process similar to that used for calculatingLAI, the amount of woody tissues included in sugi foliage was evaluated to be about 10% of the stand foliage biomass.  相似文献

Boron-neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is an attractive technique for cancer treatment. As such, α, α-cycloalkyl amino acids containing thiododecaborate ([B12H11]2?-S-) units were designed and synthesized as novel boron delivery agents for BNCT. In the present study, new thiododecaborate α, α-cycloalkyl amino acids were synthesized, and biological evaluation of the boron compounds as boron carrier for BNCT was carried out.  相似文献

We studied the effects of temperature, carbon dioxide and abscisic acid on mung bean (Vigna radiata). Plants were grown under 26/22°C or 32/28°C (16?h?light/8?h?dark) at 400 or 700?μmol?mol?1 CO2 and received ABA application of 0 or 100?μl (10?μg) every other day for three weeks, after eight days of initial growth, in growth chambers. We measured 24 parameters. As individual factors, in 16 cases temperature; in 8 cases CO2; in 9 cases ABA; and as interactive factors, in 4 cases, each of temperature?×?CO2, and CO2?×?ABA; and in 2 cases, temperature?×?ABA were significant. Higher temperatures increased growth, aboveground biomass, growth indices, photochemical quenching (qP) and nitrogen balance index (NBI). Elevated CO2 increased growth and aboveground biomass. ABA decreased growth, belowground biomass, qP and flavonoids; increased shoot/root mass ratio, chlorophyll and NBI; and had little role in regulating temperature–CO2 effects.

We perform a systematical investigation on the geometry, thermodynamic/kinetic stability, and bonding nature of low-lying isomers of BnPt (n=1-6) at the CCSD(T)/[6-311+G(d)/LanL2DZ]//B3LYP/[6-311+G(d)/LanL2DZ] level. The most stable isomers of BnPt (n=1-6) adopt planar or quasi-planar structure. BnPt (n=2-5) clusters can be generated by capping a Pt atom on the B-B edge of pure boron clusters. However, For B6Pt with non-planar structure, a single doped Pt atom significantly affects the shape of the host boron cluster. The dopant of the Pt atom can improve the stability of pure boron clusters. The valence molecular orbital (VMO), electron localization function (ELF), and Mayer bond order (MBO) are applied to gain insight into the bonding nature of BnPt (n=2-6) isomers. The aromaticity for some isomers of BnPt (n=2-6) is analyzed and discussed in terms of VMO, ELF, adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP), and nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) analyses. Results obtained from the energy and cluster decomposition analyses demonstrate that B2Pt and B4Pt exhibits as highly stable. Importantly, some isomers of BnPt (n=2-5) are stable both thermodynamically and kinetically, which are observable in future experiment.  相似文献
