Drought is a major constraint for rice production in the rainfed lowlands in China. Silicon (Si) has been verified to play an important role in enhancing plant resistance to environmental stress. Two near-isogenic lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.), w-14 (drought susceptible) and w-20 (drought resistant), were selected to study the effects of exogenous Si application on the physiological traits and nutritional status of rice under drought stress. In wet conditions, Si supply had no effects on growth and physiological parameters of rice plants. Drought stress was found to reduce dry weight, root traits, water potential, photosynthetic parameters, basal quantum yield (F v/F 0), and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (F v/F m) in rice plants, while Si application significantly increased photosynthetic rate (Pr), transpiration rate (Tr), F v/F 0, and F v/F m of rice plants under drought stress. In addition, water stress increased K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe content of rice plants, but Si treatment significantly reduced these nutrient level. These results suggested that silicon application was useful to increase drought resistance of rice through the enhancement of photochemical efficiency and adjustment of the mineral nutrient absorption in rice plants.  相似文献

Rice blast caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most devastating diseases of rice in nearly all rice growing areas of the world including Malaysia. To develop cultivars with resistance against different races of M. oryzae, availability of molecular markers along with marker-assisted selection strategies are essential. In this study, 11 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers with good fit of 1:2:1 ratio for single gene model in F2 population derived from the cross of Pongsu seribu 2 (Resistant) and Mahsuri (Susceptible) rice cultivars were analysed in 296 F3 families derived from individual F2 plants to investigate association with Pi gene conferring resistance to M. oryzae pathotype. Parents and progeny were grouped into two phenotypic classes based on their blast reactions. Chi-square test for the segregation of resistance and susceptibility in F3 generation fitted a ratio of approximately 3:1. Association of SSR markers with phenotypic trait in F3 families was identified by statistical analysis. Four SSR markers (RM413, RM5961, RM1233 and RM8225) were significantly associated with blast resistance to pathotype 7.2 of M. oryzae in rice (p ≤ 0.01). These four markers accounted for about 20% of total phenotypic variation. So, these markers were confirmed as suitable markers for use in marker-assisted selection and confirmation of blast resistance genes to develop rice cultivars with durable blast resistance in Malaysian rice breeding programmes.  相似文献

The effect of N form and Si nutrition on rice (Oryza sativa L.) susceptibility to blast disease (caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cav.) was assessed in the greenhouse with nutrient solution culture. The N form supplied to the susceptible cultivar IR50 affected the relative infection efficiency (RIE) of P. oryzae measured as lesions/cm2 leaf. Plants given NO3 - were more susceptible than plants receiving NH4 +-N. This result may partially explain why plants grown in nonflooded soil, where NO3 - is the main source of inorganic N, are more susceptible to blast than plants grown in flooded soils, where NH4 + is the main inorganic N source. Nitrate-N and Mn concentration were higher in leaf blades of plants grown with NO3 -. Total-N, Si, and Fe concentration were not affected by N form. The addition of Si significantly increased IR50 resistance to blast. With 2.2 mol m-3 Si in solution, RIE values were lower by more than 90% than the control with no Si added in solution. The effect of Si accumulation in leaves at various positions was further studied in cultivars having differing levels of resistance (IR50, IR36, and IAC165). Silicon addition significantly reduced RIE in the three cultivars. Silicon concentration in the topmost leaves (the only leaves showing typical blast lesions) was not significantly different among the three cultivars when 2.2 mol m-3 Si was used. Silicon was an important component in the mechanism of resistance to blast and it was effective regardless of the original level of resistance of the cultivar used. Leaf scald, caused by Monographella albescens, is one of the major diseases in rice worldwide. This study investigated the effect of silicon (Si) on the photosynthetic gas exchange parameters [net CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs), transpiration rate (E)] and internal CO2 concentration (Ci), chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence a parameters [minimal fluorescence (F0), maximum fluorescence (Fm), maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm)], photochemical quenching coefficient (qp), effective quantum yield of PSII [Y(II)], quantum yield of regulated energy dissipation [Y(NPQ)] and quantum yield dissipation non‐regulated [Y(NO)] and the concentrations of pigments in rice plants grown in nutrient solutions containing either 0 (?Si) or 2 mM Si (+Si) and non‐inoculated or inoculated with M. albescens. Leaf scald severity decreased with higher foliar Si concentration. For the inoculated +Si plants, A, gs and E were significantly higher in comparison with the inoculated ?Si plants, in which Ci was significantly increased. Similarly, the concentrations of Chla, Chlb, total Chla+b and carotenoids were higher for the +Si plants in comparison with the ?Si plants. Changes in the images of Chl a fluorescence were first observed precisely on the ?Si plants leaves in comparison with the +Si plants. A decrease of qP and Y(II) in inoculated ?Si plants, in comparison with the inoculated +Si plants, was accompanied by an increase in Y(NPQ) and Y(NO). Notably, the extent of the leaf areas was much more evident for Y(II) and qP in comparison with F0, Fm and Fv/Fm, suggesting that Y(II) and qP were good predictors in detecting the early effects of leaf scald on the leaf photosynthesis. For the +Si non‐inoculated plants, changes in Y(II) were associated with alterations in both Y(NPQ) and Y(NO) compared with non‐inoculated ?Si plants. In conclusion, the photosynthetic performance (as demonstrated by the gas exchange and Chl a fluorescence parameters) and the pigment pools of rice plants infected with M. albescens were preserved by Si supply and, therefore, provided an increase in rice resistance against leaf scald.  相似文献

Wheat blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae, is currently the main disease that threat to food security and wheat production in the world. This study investigated the photosynthetic responses of wheat plants from cultivars BR-18 (moderately resistant) and BRS-Guamirim (susceptible), differing in their levels of resistance to blast, by using leaf gas exchange and rapid light curves analysis focusing primarily on the asymptomatic (AS) and symptomatic (S) phases of disease development. The photosynthetic capacity of plants from cultivar BRS-Guamirim was compromised by diffusional CO2 limitations and inefficient photoprotection mechanism at the AS phase of blast due to reductions in CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and fluorescent quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm). For cultivar BR-18, the loss in photosynthesis was minimized due to an efficient control in the regulated energy dissipation [Y(NPQ)] avoiding losses by latent heat [Y(NO)]. Additionally, Fv/Fm was a promissory physiological indicator of blast during its AS phase while Y(NPQ) and Y(NO) were more sensitive at the S phase of the disease. In conclusion, the physiological parameters Fv/Fm, Y(NQP) and Y(NO) can be used as physiological markers in wheat breeding programs seeking in the development of cultivars resistant to blast.  相似文献

Samba mahsuri (BPT 5204) is a cultivar of the medium slender grain indica variety of Oryza sativa grown across India for its high yield and quality. However, this cultivar is susceptible to several diseases and pests including rice blast. The analysis of near isogenic lines indicated the presence of a resistance gene, Pi-1(t) in the donor cultivar C101LAC which is highly resistant to the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea (M. grisea). C101LAC was crossed with susceptible indica rice cultivar (BPT 5204) to generate the mapping population. A mendelian segregation ratio of 3:1 for resistant to susceptible F2 plants using bulk segregation analysis confirmed the presence of a major gene pi-1(t) by simple sequence repeats marker RM224 to the highly virulent blast isolate DRR 001.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters were measured in two invasive weeds, Mikania micrantha and Chromolaena odorata, grown in soil under full, medium, and low irradiance and full, medium, and low water supply. Both species showed significantly higher net photosynthetic rate, quantum yield of PS 2 photochemistry and photochemical quenching coefficient under high than low irradiance. For M. micrantha, low irradiance caused decreased chlorophyll content (Chl), Chl a/b ratio and maximum photochemical efficiency of PS 2 (Fv/Fm), while drought decreased Chl content and Fv/Fm and increased nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). However, these parameters were much less affected in C. odorata except that Chl content and NPQ slightly increased under drought and high irradiance. High irradiance increased xanthophyll pools in both species, especially M. micrantha under combination with drought.  相似文献

Plant growth, chlorophyll (Chl) content, photosynthetic gas exchange, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCO) enzyme activity, and Chl fluorescence in radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) plants were examined after turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) infection. Plant fresh mass, dry mass, Chl content, net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and RuBPCO activity were significantly lower in infected plants after 5 weeks of virus infection as compared to healthy plants. The 5-week virus infection did not induce significant differences in intercellular CO2 concentration (C i, photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm), excitation capture efficiency of open PS2 reaction centres (Fv'/Fm'), effective quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (ΔF/Fm'), and photochemical quenching (qP), but non-photochemical quenching (qN) and alternative electron sink (AES) were significantly enhanced. Thus the decreased plant biomass of TuMV-infected plants might be associated with the decreased photosynthetic activity mainly due to reduced RuBPCO activity.  相似文献

The experiments were conducted on two tomato cultivars: Garbo and Robin. Mineral starvation due to plant growth in 20-fold diluted nutrient solution (DNS) combined with chilling reduced the rate of photosynthesis (P N) and stomatal conductance (g) to a greater extent than in plants grown in full nutrient solution (FNS). In phosphate-starved tomato plants the P N rate and stomatal conductance decreased more after chilling than in plants grown on FNS. In low-P plants even 2 days after chilling the recovery of CO2 assimilation rate and stomatal conductance was low. A resupply of phosphorus to low-P plants (low P + P) did not improve the rate of photosynthesis in non-chilled plants (NCh) but prevented PN inhibition in chilled (Ch) plants. The greatest effect of P resupply was expressed as a better recovery of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, especially in non-chilled low P + P plants. The F v/F m (ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence) decreased more during P starvation than as an effect of chilling. Supplying phosphorus to low-P plants caused the slight increase in the F v/F mratio. In conclusion, after a short-term chilling in darkness a much more drastic inhibition of photosynthesis was observed in nutrient-starved or P-insufficient tomato plants than in plants from FNS. This inhibition was caused by the decrease in both photochemical efficiency of photosystems and the reduction of stomatal conductance. The presented results support the hypothesis that tomato plants with limited supply of mineral nutrients or phosphorus are more susceptible to chilling.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate acclimation of micropropagated plants of Rhododendron ponticum subsp. baeticum to different irradiances and recovery after exposure to high irradiance. Plants grown under high (HL) or intermediate (IL) irradiances displayed higher values of maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) and light saturation coefficient (Ek) than plants grown under low irradiance (LL). The capacity of tolerance to photoinhibition (as assessed by the response of photochemical quenching, qp) varied as follows: HL > IL > LL. Thermal energy dissipation (qN) was also affected by growth irradiance, with higher saturating values being observed in HL plants. Light-response curves suggested a gradual replacement of qp by qN with increasing irradiance. Following exposure to irradiance higher than 1500 μmol m−2 s−1, a prolonged reduction of the maximal photochemical efficiency of PS 2 (Fv/Fm) was observed in LL plants, indicating the occurrence of chronic photoinhibition. In contrary, the decrease in Fv/Fm was quickly reverted in HL plants, pointing to a reversible photoinhibition.  相似文献

Identification of Two Blast Resistance Genes in a Rice Variety, Digu   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Blast, caused by Magnaporthe grisea is one of most serious diseases of rice worldwide. A Chinese local rice variety, Digu, with durable blast resistance, is one of the important resources for rice breeding for resistance to blast (M. grisea) in China. The objectives of the current study were to assess the identity of the resistance genes in Digu and to determine the chromosomal location by molecular marker tagging. Two susceptible varieties to blast, Lijiangxintuanheigu (LTH) and Jiangnanxiangnuo (JNXN), a number of different varieties, each containing one blast resistance gene, Piks, Pia, Pik, Pib, Pikp, Pita2, Pita, Piz, Pii, Pikm, Pizt, Pit and Pi‐11, and the progeny populations from the crosses between Digu and each of these varieties were analysed with Chinese blast isolates. We found that the resistance of Digu to each of the two Chinese blast isolates, ZB13 and ZB15, were controlled by two single dominant genes, separately. The two genes are different from the known blast resistance genes and, therefore, designated as Pi‐d(t)1 and Pi‐d(t)2. By using bulked segregation method and molecular marker analysis in corresponding F2 populations, Pi‐d(t)1 was located on chromosome 2 with a distance of 1.2 and 10.6 cM to restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers G1314A and G45, respectively. And Pi‐d(t)2 was located on chromosome 6 with a distance of 3.2 and 3.4 cM to simple sequence repeat markers RM527 and RM3, respectively. We also developed a novel strategy of resistance gene analogue (RGA) assay with uneven polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to further tag the two genes and successfully identified two RGA markers, SPO01 and SPO03, which were co‐segregated toPi‐d(t)1 and Pi‐d(t)2, respectively, in their corresponding F2 populations. These results provide essential information for further utilization of the Digu's blast resistance genes in rice disease resistance breeding and positional cloning of these genes.  相似文献

Rice blast, caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, severely threatens rice production worldwide. A new resistance gene, Pi-Da(t), was found in Dacca6, a local upland rice variety from the Philippines. It was mapped into a region between RM5529 and RM211 on chromosome 2, where no blast resistance gene has been reported, by bulk segregant analysis (BSA) in a BC1F2 population from a cross between Dacca6 and Jin23B. The presence of Pi-Da(t) in Jin23B background, an elite parental line preferred for its good grain quality and widely adopted in China??s three-line hybrid rice breeding program over the past 20?years, was verified by BSA and graphical genotyping with additional eight BC1F2 bulks. This work presents an example of combining gene mapping work and gene introgression with BSA and graphical genotyping methods in a backcross (BC) breeding scheme. Both the resistant Jin23B line and the linked markers will provide useful information and materials for marker-assisted breeding against blast disease in rice.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rates of green leaves (GL) and green flower petals (GFP) of the CAM plant Dendrobium cv. Burana Jade and their sensitivities to different growth irradiances were studied in shade-grown plants over a period of 4 weeks. Maximal photosynthetic O2 evolution rates and CAM acidities [dawn/dusk fluctuations in titratable acidity] were higher in leaves exposed to intermediate sunlight [a maximal photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 500–600 μmol m−2 s−1] than in leaves grown under full sunlight (a maximal PPFD of 1 000–1 200 μmol m−2 s−1) and shade (a maximal PPFD of 200–250 μmol m−2 s−1). However, these two parameters of GFP were highest in plants grown under the shade and lowest in full sun-grown plants. Both GL and GFP of plants exposed to full sunlight had lower predawn Fv/Fm [dark adapted ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence (the maximal photosystem 2 yield without actinic irradiation)] than those of shade-grown plants. When exposed to intermediate sunlight, however, there were no significant changes in predawn Fv/Fm in GL whereas a significant decrease in predawn Fv/Fm was found in GFP of the same plant. GFP exposed to full sunlight exhibited a greater decrease in predawn Fv/Fm compared to those exposed to intermediate sunlight. The patterns of changes in total chlorophyll (Chl) content of GL and GFP were similar to those of Fv/Fm. Although midday Fv/Fm fluctuated with prevailing irradiance, changes of midday Fv/Fm after exposure to different growth irradiances were similar to those of predawn Fv/Fm in both GL and GFP. The decreases in predawn and midday Fv/Fm were much more pronounced in GFP than in GL under full sunlight, indicating greater sensitivity in GFP to high irradiance (HI). In the laboratory, electron transport rate and photochemical and non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence were also determined under different irradiances. All results indicated that GFP are more susceptible to HI than GL. Although the GFP of Dendrobium cv. Burana Jade require a lower amount of radiant energy for photosynthesis and this plant is usually grown in the shade, is not necessarily a shade plant.  相似文献

Seasonal variability of maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) was studied in needles of Taxus baccata seedlings acclimated to full light (HL, 100% solar irradiance), medium light (ML, 18% irradiance) or low light (LL, 5% irradiance). In HL plants, Fv/Fm was below 0.8 (i.e. state of photoinhibition) throughout the whole experimental period from November to May, with the greatest decline in January and February (when Fv/Fm value reached 0.37). In ML seedlings, significant declines of Fv/Fm occurred in January (with the lowest level at 0.666), whereas the decline in LL seedlings (down to 0.750) was not significant. Full recovery of Fv/Fm in HL seedlings was delayed until the end of May, in contrast to ML and LL seedlings. Fv/Fm was significantly correlated with daily mean (T mean), maximal (T max) and minimal (T min) temperature and T min was consistently the best predictor of Fv/Fm in HL and ML needles. Temperature averages obtained over 3 or 5 days prior to measurement were better predictors of Fv/Fm than 1- or 30-day averages. Thus our results indicate a strong light-dependent seasonal photoinhibition in needles of T. baccata as well as suggest a coupling of Fv/Fm to cumulative temperature from several preceding days. The dependence of sustained winter photoinhibition on light level to which the plants are acclimated was further demonstrated when plants from the three light environments were exposed to full daylight over single days in December, February and April and Fv/Fm was followed throughout the day to determine residual sensitivity of electron transport to ambient irradiance. In February, the treatment revealed a considerable midday increase in photoinhibition in ML plants, much less in HL (already downregulated) and none in LL plants. This suggested a greater capacity for photosynthetic utilization of electrons in LL plants and a readiness for rapid induction of photoinhibition in ML plants. Further differences between plants acclimated to contrasting light regimes were revealed during springtime de-acclimation, when short term regeneration dynamics of Fv/Fm and the relaxation of nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) indicated a stronger persistent thermal mechanism for energy dissipation in HL plants. The ability of Taxus baccata to sustain winter photoinhibition from autumn until late spring can be beneficial for protection against an excessive light occurring together with frosts but may also restrict photosynthetic carbon gain by this shade-tolerant species when growing in well illuminated sites.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of 2,6‐dimethoxy‐1,4‐benzoquinone (DMBQ) on induced resistance to Magnaporthe oryzae in rice. DMBQ concentrations greater than 50 μg/ml inhibited spore germination and appressorium formation in M. oryzae. When rice leaves pretreated with 10 μg/ml DMBQ, which did not show antifungal activity against spore germination and appressorium formation of M. oryzae, were inoculated with M. oryzae spores 5 days after DMBQ pretreatment, blast lesion formation was inhibited compared with control leaves pretreated with distilled water. In addition, infection‐inhibiting activity against M. oryzae was significantly enhanced in rice leaf sheaths pretreated with 10 μg/ml DMBQ. H2O2 generation was observed in rice leaves pretreated with DMBQ, and PAL, POX, CHS and PR10a were significantly expressed in these leaves. These results suggested that DMBQ can protect rice from blast disease caused by M. oryzae.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) is the basis of plant growth and development and, is considered as one of the priming agents to elevate a range of stresses. Plants use solar radiations through photosynthesis, which amasses the assimilatory components of crop yield to meet the global demand for food. Nitrogen is the main regulator in the allocation of photosynthetic apparatus which changes of the photosynthesis (Pn) and quantum yield (Fv/Fm) of the plant. In the present study, dynamics of the photosynthetic establishment, N-dependent relation with chlorophyll fluorescence attributes and Rubisco efficacy was evaluated in low-N tolerant (cv. CR Dhan 311) and low-N sensitive (cv. Rasi) rice cultivars under low-N and optimum-N conditions. There was a decrease in the stored leaf N under low-N condition, resulting in the decreased Pn and Fv/Fm efficiency of the plants through depletion in the activity and content of Rubisco. The Pn and Fv/Fm followed the parallel trend of leaf N content during low-N condition along with depletion of intercellular CO2 concentration and overall conductance under low-N condition. Photosynthetic saturation curve cleared abrupt decrease of effective quantum yield in the low-N sensitive rice cultivar than the low-N tolerant rice. Also, the rapid light curve highlighted the unacclimated regulation of photochemical and non-photochemical quenching in the low-N condition. The low-N sensitive rice cultivar triumphed non-photochemical quenching, whereas the low-N tolerant rice cultivar rose gradually during the light curve. Our study suggested that the quantum yield is the key limitation for photosynthesis in low-N condition. Regulation of Rubisco, photochemical and non-photochemical quenching may help plants to grow under low-N level.

In a previous study, we characterized a high chlorophyll fluorescence Ipal mutant of Arabidopsis thallana, in which approximately 20% photosystem (PS) Ⅱ protein is accumulated. In the present study, analysis of fluorescence decay kinetics and thermoluminescence profiles demonstrated that the electron transfer reaction on either the donor or acceptor side of PSII remained largely unaffected in the Ipa1 mutant. In the mutant, maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm, where Fm is the maximum fluorescence yield and Fv is variable fluorescence) decreased with increasing light intensity and remained almost unchanged in wildtype plants under different light conditions. The Fv/Fm values also increased when mutant plants were transferred from standard growth light to low light conditions. Analysis of PSll protein accumulation further confirmed that the amount of PSll reaction center protein is correlated with changes in Fv/Fm in Ipal plants. Thus, the assembled PSll in the mutant was functional and also showed increased photosensitivity compared with wild-type plants.  相似文献

Growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics were investigated in wild type (WT) and Cd-sensitive mutant rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants using 50 μM Cd treatment for 12 d followed by a 3-d recovery. Under Cd stress, net dry mass and pigment contents were significantly lower in the mutant plants than in the WT. The mutant had lower net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) than WT rice, however, it had higher intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), indicating that non-stomatal factors accounted for the inhibition of P N. Maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2), and photochemical quenching (qP) decreased much in the mutant under Cd stress. Cd content in roots and leaves of the mutant was significantly higher than those in the WT. Hence Cd toxicity was associated with the marked increases in Cd contents of plant tissue. After the recovery for 3 d, the WT rice had higher capacity to recover from Cd injury than the mutant.  相似文献

The chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence imaging technique was applied to cashew seedlings inoculated with the fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae to assess any disturbances in the photosynthetic apparatus of the plants before the onset of visual symptoms. Two-month-old cashew plants were inoculated with mycelium of L. theobromae isolate Lt19 or Lt32. Dark-adapted and light-acclimated whole plants or previously labelled, single, mature leaf from each plant were evaluated weekly for Chl fluorescence parameters. From 21 to 28 days, inoculation with both isolates resulted in the significantly lower maximal photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) than those for control samples, decreasing from values of 0.78 to 0.62. In contrast, the time response of the measured fluorescence transient curve from dark-acclimated plants increased in both whole plants and single mature leaves in inoculated plants compared with controls. The Fv/Fm images clearly exhibited photosynthetic perturbations 14 days after inoculation before any visual symptoms appeared. Additionally, decays in the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry and photochemical quenching coefficient were also observed over time. However, nonphotochemical quenching increased during the evaluation period. We conclude that Fv/Fm images are the effective way of detecting early metabolic perturbations in the photosynthetic apparatus of cashew seedlings caused by gummosis in both whole plants and single leaves and could be potentially employed in larger-scale screening systems.  相似文献

Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence techniques were used to evaluate the acclimation capacity of the schlerophyll shrub Heteromeles arbutifolia M. Roem. to the multiple co-occurring summer stresses of the California chaparral. We examined the influence of water, heat and high light stresses on the carbon gain and survival of sun and shade seedlings via a factorial experiment involving a slow drying cycle applied to plants grown outdoors during the summer. The photochemical efficiency of PSII exhibited a diurnal, transient decrease (δF/Fm′) and a chronic decrease or photoinhibition (Fv/Fm) in plants exposed to full sunlight. Water stress enhanced both transient decreases of δF/Fm’and photoinhibition. Effects of decreased δF/Fm’and Fv/Fm on carbon gain were observed only in well-watered plants since in water-stressed plants they were overidden by stomatal closure. Reductions in photochemical efficiency and stomatal conductance were observed in all plants exposed to full sunlight, even in those that were well-watered. This suggested that H. arbutifolia sacrificed carbon gain for water conservation and photoprotection (both structurally via shoot architecture and physiologically via down-regulation) and that this response was triggered by a hot and dry atmosphere together with high PFD, before severe water, heat or high PFD stresses occur. We found fast adaptive adjustments of the thermal stability of PSII (diurnal changes) and a superimposed long-term acclimation (days to weeks) to high leaf temperatures. Water stress enhanced resistance of PSII to high temperatures both in the dark and over a wide range of PFD. Low PFD protected photochemical activity against inactivation by heat while high PFD exacerbated damage of PSII by heat. The greater interception of radiation by horizontally restrained leaves relative to the steep leaves of sun-acclimated plants caused photoinhibition and increased leaf temperature. When transpirational cooling was decreased by water stress, leaf temperature surpassed the limits of chloroplast thermostability. The remarkable acclimation of water-stressed plants to high leaf temperatures proved insufficient for the semi-natural environmental conditions of the experiment. Summer stresses characteristic of Mediterranean-type climates (high leaf temperatures in particular) are a potential limiting factor for seedling survival in H. arbutifolia, especially for shade seedlings lacking the crucial structural photoprotection provided by steep leaf angles.  相似文献
