The life cycles, biomass and secondary production of three sympatricfreshwater basommatophoran snails, Lymnaea palustris (MÜller),Physa fontinalis Linnaeus and Anisus rotundatus (Poiret) werestudied during two years in a freshwater ditch. L. palustrisexhibited an iteroparous life-cycle whereas the two other speciespresented a semelparous life-cycle, adults died just after oviposition.L. palustris secondary production (dry weight) value was higher(P = 11 298.4 mg 0.1 m–1 yr–1) than those of P.fontinalis (P = 846.3 mg 0.1 m–2 yr–1) and A. rotundatus(P = 1192 mg 0.1 m–2 yr–1). A species complex of the large genus Aralichus Gaud (Pterolichoidea, Pterolichidae) is restricted to Central and South American parrots of the genus Brotogeris Vigors. Aralichus porrectus (Mégnin & Trouessart) from Brotogeris jugularis (Müller) is redescribed, and five new species are described: A. chrysopteri from B. chrysopterus (L.), A. cyanopterae from B. cyanoptera (Salvadori), A. crassisetosus and A. sanctithomae from B. sanctithomae (Müller), and A. tiricae from B. tirica (Gmelin). Normal vision depends on the correct function of retinal neurons and glia and it is impaired in the course of diabetic retinopathy. Müller cells, the main glial cells of the retina, suffer morphological and functional alterations during diabetes participating in the pathological retinal dysfunction. Recently, we showed that Müller cells express the pleiotropic protein potassium channel interacting protein 3 (KChIP3), an integral component of the voltage-gated K+ channels KV4. Here, we sought to analyze the role of KChIP3 in the molecular mechanisms underlying hyperglycemia-induced phenotypic changes in the glial elements of the retina. The expression and function of KChIp3 was analyzed in vitro in rat Müller primary cultures grown under control (5.6 mM) or high glucose (25 mM) (diabetic-like) conditions. We show the up-regulation of KChIP3 expression in Müller cell cultures under high glucose conditions and demonstrate a previously unknown interaction between the KV4 channel and KChIP3 in Müller cells. We show evidence for the expression of a 4-AP-sensitive transient outward voltage-gated K+ current and an alteration in the inactivation of the macroscopic outward K+ currents expressed in high glucose-cultured Müller cells. Our data support the notion that induction of KChIP3 and functional changes of KV4 channels in Müller cells could exert a physiological role in the onset of diabetic retinopathy.  相似文献

Tephroseris palustris (syn. Senecio palustris) is a circumboreal species with large distribution range. The European part of the recent distribution area extends southwards to central France, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine, while in Great Britain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania, T. palustris has been treated as extinct species. The southern boundary of its distribution in Poland does not reach the Carpathian territory. Herbarium specimens, formerly collected in Czech Republic, were found, however, all Czech localities are extinct. No herbarium specimens confirming the old literature data from Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania have been found. Some herbarium specimens coming from this area, and declared as T. palustris (S. palustris), in fact, refer to Senecio paludosus L. Contrary to previous nomenclature review (Jeffrey & Chen 1984), the name Tephroseris palustris (L.) Rchb. seems to be correct (Reichenbach Fl. Saxon.: 146, 1842).  相似文献

Kir5.1 is an inwardly rectifying K+ channel subunit whose functional role has not been fully elucidated. Expression and distribution of Kir5.1 in retina were examined with a specific polyclonal antibody. Kir5.1 immunoreactivity was detected in glial Müller cells and in some retinal neurons. In the Kir5.1-positive neurons the expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65) was detected, suggesting that they may be GABAergic-amacrine cells. In Müller cells, spots of Kir5.1 immunoreactivity distributed diffusely at the cell body and in the distal portions, where Kir4.1 immunoreactivity largely overlapped. In addition, Kir4.1 immunoreactivity without Kir5.1 was strongly concentrated at the endfoot of Müller cells facing the vitreous surface or in the processes surrounding vessels. The immunoprecipitant obtained from retina with anti-Kir4.1 antibody contained Kir5.1. These results suggest that heterotetrameric Kir4.1/Kir5.1 channels may exist in the cell body and distal portion of Müller cells, whereas homomeric Kir4.1 channels are clustered in the endfeet and surrounding vessels. With 33 years of phytoplankton quantitative studies carried out, a series of qualitative data with a length of over 80 years is at our disposal. About 500 algal species have been found in plankton by different researchers. In different seasons and years 35 main species (dominants and subdominants) form 68–96 % of biomass in L. Pihkva (southern, more eutrophic part) and 60–97 % in L. Peipsi (northern, less eutrophic part). L. Lämmijärv, connecting the two parts is similar to L. Pihkva in respect to phytoplankton and the trophic state. Diatoms and blue-green algae prevail in biomass, diatoms and green algae, in the species number. The oligo-mesotrophic Aulacoseira islandica (O. Müller) Sim. is characteristic of the cool period; A. granulata (Ehr.) Sim. and Stephanodiscus binderanus (Kütz.) Krieger prevail in summer and autumn, the latter being most abundant in the southern part. Gloeotrichia echinulata (J.S. Smith) P Richter and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs dominate in summer causing water-bloom. Phytoplankton has mostly three maxima in seasonal dynamics in L. Peipsi and two in L. Pihkva. Its average biomass in spring in different years has fluctuated in the range 5.6–16 and 6–12.7 g m–3, in summer 3.1–14.8 and 5.6–125 (10–20 in most cases); and in autumn 7–16.3 and 5.2–26 in the northern and southern parts, respectively.The dominant complex has not changed considerably since 1909; however, the distribution of dominant species in lake parts has become more even in the last decades. Periods of high biomass occurred in the first half of the 1960s and 1970s and in 1988–1994, of low biomass in 1981–1987. The first coincided, in general, with periods of low water level and high water temperature.  相似文献

Two species of Copepoda Temora longicornis (Müller) and Pseudocalanus elongatus (Boeck) were cultured continuously in the laboratory. Four and three generations, respectively, were raised at 16 different combinations of temperature and food concentration. Prosome length and ash-free dry weight were measured in the adult stage and in Pseudocalanus also in copepodite stage I, and the relation between length and weight was established. In Pseudocalanus also the relative amount of lipid was estimated.Prosome length and length-specific body weight (condition factor) were positively correlated with food concentration. Lipid content in Pseudocalanus was also strongly affected by the concentration of food.Prosome length was negatively correlated with temperature. However, length-specific body weight in Temora was positively correlated with temperature. Therefore, at higher temperature Temora was smaller, but heavier per unit body length. In Pseudocalanus a similar but less significant influence of temperature on length-specific weight was found; lipid content was not significantly influenced by the temperature.Females of Temora had larger length-specific weights than males. In Pseudocalanus the opposite was found, coinciding with a higher lipid content in males than in females.It is discussed that at natural concentrations of phytoplankton body size and weight of copepods are reduced in the North Sea during the major part of the growing-season.  相似文献

The probing behaviour of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Sitobion avenae (F.) and the feeding behaviour of several slug species, (Deroceras reticulatum (Müller), Arion distinctus Mabille, Agriolimax caruanae Pollonera, Maximus sp.) were assessed on seedlings of winter barley (Hordeum marinum) treated with different concentrations of azadirachtin. Settling behaviour of both aphid species was strongly biased towards the untreated seedlings or those treated with low concentrations of azadirachtin. Concentrations of <500 ppm were effective with topical application and probing activity was reduced for at least 4 days after application. Systemic activity of azadirachtin against cereal aphids was also demonstrated. Feeding behaviour of the slug species, as seen by the amount of leaf eaten compared to the controls, was not affected by the presence of azadirachtin at those concentrations which deterred aphids from feeding. The relevance of these results to crop protection is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The process of cell wall regeneration around two species of higher plant protoplasts has been studied using reflection scanning electron microscopy. The first stage in the process is the formation of short fibres from randomly spaced centres. With protoplasts of tobacco leaf (Nicotiana tabacum L., cv White Burley) these fibres then elongate and interlace apparently at random to give rise to a matted continuous layer of wall. Protoplasts of a suspension culture of grapevine cells (Vitis vinifera L. cv Müller Thurgau) produce short fibres but these fail to elongate. Budding is observed during wall regeneration around vine protoplasts. The results are discussed in terms of the mechanical properties of the wall and its relationship to changes in plasmalemma morphology which are observed during wall formation.Abbreviation SEM scanning electron microscopy  相似文献

The prediction of impact ofcoccinellids in an aphid infested crop dependson the food specificity of the predator. Theresponse towards thirteen species of aphids(Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) was thereforetested in the most abundant aphidophagouscoccinellid Coccinella septempunctata L.(Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). All aphidspecies studied (Eucalipterus tiliae(L.), Tuberculatus annulatus (L.), Euceraphis betulae (L.), Cavariellakonoi Takahashi, Liosomaphis berberidis(Kaltenbach), Acyrthosiphon ignotumMordvilko, Aphis spiraephaga Müller,Aphis fabae Scopoli, Macrosiphoniella artemisiae Boyer de Fonscolombe, Capitophorus hippophaeus(Walk.), Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris),Aphis craccivora Koch, Sitobionavenae (Fabricius) were suitable foodaccording to the rate of larval development,larval mortality and adult fresh weight.Females of C. septempunctata fed with A. pisum and S. avenae laid twice as manyeggs as those fed with A. fabae and A. craccivora. Mammalian Müller cells have been reported to possess retinal progenitor cell properties and generate new neurons after injury. This study investigates murine Müller cells under in vitro conditions for their capability of dedifferentiation into retinal progenitor cells. Müller cells were isolated from mouse retina, and proliferating cells were expanded in serum-containing medium. For dedifferentiation, the cultured cells were transferred to serum-replacement medium (SRM) at different points in time after their isolation. Interestingly, early cell passages produced fibrous tissue in which extracellular matrix proteins and connective tissue markers were differentially expressed. In contrast, aged Müller cell cultures formed neurospheres in SRM that are characteristic for neuronal progenitor cells. These neurospheres differentiated into neuron-like cells after cultivation on laminin/ornithine cell culture substrate. Here, we report for the first time that murine Müller cells can be progenitors for both, fibrous tissue cells and neuronal cells, depending on the age of the cell culture.  相似文献

Summary Subsurface cisterns were found in retinal neurons of the Cynomolgus monkey. They were located in amacrine, bipolar and ganglion cells and were associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Subsurface cisterns were not found in Müller cells. The possible functional significance of the subsurface cisterns is discussed.  相似文献

In vertebrate eyes, images are projected onto an inverted retina where light passes all retinal layers on its way to the photoreceptor cells. Light scattering within this tissue should impair vision. We show that radial glial (Müller) cells in the living retina minimize intraretinal light scatter and conserve the diameter of a beam that hits a single Müller cell endfoot. Thus, light arrives at individual photoreceptors with high intensity. This leads to an optimized signal/noise ratio, which increases visual sensitivity and contrast. Moreover, we show that the ratio between Müller cells and cones—responsible for acute vision—is roughly 1. This suggests that high spatiotemporal resolution may be achieved by each cone receiving its part of the image via its individual Müller cell-light guide.  相似文献

The responses of three chydorid species, Chydorus sphaericus(O.F. Müller), Alona affinis (Leydig) and Alonopsis elongata (Sars) to temperature, pH and food type were examined. Egg development time of all species decreased with increasing temperature, although the degree of change was different for each species. C. sphaericus had the fastest development time at all temperatures, and A. elongata the slowest. pH also affected the egg development time of each species differently. A. elongata failed to reproduce at low and medium pH, the egg development time of C. sphaericus was fastest at high pH while that of A. affinis was fastest at low pH. Food type was found to have significant effects on the population growth of individual species. C. sphaericus populations grew equally well in all three food types provided, and grew more than the other two species when fed on an algae culture, and filtered pond water. A. affinisand A. elongata populations grew best when fed on a detritus food source. The responses of each species to the different variables tested are discussed in relation to field observations of their distribution and abundance.  相似文献

Theeffects of light competition and litter on seedling recruitment and theperformance of established individuals were examined in Violapalustris. This polycarpic perennial plant was a common component ofspecies-rich fen meadows in northwestern Germany until the middle of thiscentury, but today is considered to be regionally endangered. From summer 1996until summer 1998 a bi-factorial field experiment combining three standing croptreatments (mowing, thinning, control) with two litter layer treatments (litterremoval, no litter removal) was carried out in an abandoned fen meadow toinvestigate the effects of these factors both on V.palustris and on aboveground species composition and diversity.MANOVAs (multivariate analysis of variance) revealed significant treatmenteffects for the performance of V. palustris related toexperimental manipulation. Mowing increased vital attributes including thenumber of rosette leaves, the percentage of individuals with chasmogamous andcleistogamous flowers and the number of rhizomes. In contrast, the length of theleafstalk, mean leaf area and the length of rhizomes were negatively associatedwith mowing. Litter removal significantly increased the number of V.palustris seedlings. The removal of the litter layer already resultedin an increase in aboveground species richness in the first year of theexperiment. After three years of experimental manipulation, both abovegroundspecies richness and diversity were positively associated with mowing.Redundancy Analysis showed that typical wet meadow species (Cardaminepratensis, Lychnis flos-cuculi, Lotuspedunculatus) and species of mesotrophic fens (Violapalustris, Agrostis canina, Potentillapalustris) were positively influenced by mowing. It can be concludedthat V. palustris recruitment and growth is promoted by aregular disturbance regime on fen meadows. The conservation of many typicalspecies of wet meadows and fens in northwestern Germany depends on moderategrazing or cutting. These management types prevent successional changes whichlead to an increase in standing crop and the development of a litter layer, bothof which can cause local extinction.  相似文献

Summary Three snail populations of an intermittent backwater were studied over a 20-month period, and estimates were made of rate of population change, mean biomass, annual and summer net production, and survival under conditions of little standing water. Lymnaea palustris and Physa integra populations were essentially univoltine, while G. parvus appeared to produce several generations during the year. L. palustris formed a protective epiphragm and was apparently better suited to recurrent dry periods than either G. parvus or P. integra, the latter population being maintained through immigration from the stream population. The population density of G. parvus was usually well below, and more aggregated, than the other two species, and there was considerable sampling error associated with its estimated population parameters.The estimated annual production rates for L. palustris and P. integra were 2.18 g/m2 and 1.59 g/m2, respectively, and these two species accounted for about 98% of the total gastropod production. About 75.9% and 66.5% of the L. palustris and P. integra production, respectively, occurred between June and November. Summer turnover ratios (ratio of production to mean standing crop) in 1969 were 4.69 for L. palustris and 2.94 for P. integra. An extended dry period early in the summer of 1970 reduced total snail production to about 18–24% that of the previous season, although summer turnover ratios were fairly consistent.  相似文献

Summary The organisation of the outer nuclear layer and the structure of the outer limiting membrane of rabbit retina have been studied. In specimens stained by the Golgi method it was observed that in the outer nuclear layer each Müller cell envelops with its thin lamellar expansions ten to fifteen rod and cone cell bodies.The only cytoplasmic organelles in rod and cone cell bodies are a few free ribosomes and smooth surfaced vesicles. Neurotubules are prominent in the outer and inner fibres of the rods and cones.The processes of the Müller cells are distinctive because of the presence of many glycogen granules and glial filaments. Also present but only found near the outer limiting membrane are mitochondria, occasional centrioles and cilia that lack inner fibres. Long microvilli originate from the Müller cell processes on the scleral side of the outer limiting membrane.The photoreceptor cells on the vitreal side of the outer limiting membrane are completely isolated from each other by glial processes. On the scleral side of the membrane, the inner segments of the photoreceptor cells are not completely isolated by glial processes and so are frequently found in mutual contact. In the outer nuclear layer the granule of each photoreceptor is surrounded by more than one glial process while the fibres are often deeply embedded in a single glial process and provided with a mesofibre.At the level of the outer limiting membrane the visual cells and the glial expansions enveloping them are joined together by a junctional complex formed by a zonula adhaerens interposed between two very short zonulae occludentes. The same junctional complex joins to each other the contiguous expansions of the Müller cells and the mesofibres of the visual elements.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in phytoplankton biomass and species diversity in a shallow, eutrophic Danish lake are described and related to different disturbance events acting on the phytoplankton community.Both the spring diatom maximum and the summer bloom of the filamentous blue-green alga, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs, coincided with low values of phytoplankton species diversity and equitability. Diatom collapse was mainly due to internal modifications as nutrient depletion (Si, P) caused by rapid growth of phytoplankton, and increased grazing activity from zooplankton. A large population of Daphnia longispina O.F. Müller in June effectively removed smaller algal competitors, thus favouring the development of a huge summer bloom (140 mm3 l–1) of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Heavy rainfall and storms in late July increased the loss of Apahnizomenon by out-flow and disturbed the stratification of the lake. These events caused a marked decline in phytoplankton biomass but had no effect on species diversity. A second storm period in late August circulated the lake completely and was followed by a rapid increase in phytoplankton diversity, and a change in the phytoplankton community structure from dominance of large, slow-growing K-selected species (Aphanizomenon) to small, fast-growing r-selected species (cryptomonads).  相似文献
