Hormones underlie the decision of assuming a territorial or a nonterritorial role, with territorial individuals usually having higher hormonal levels than nonterritorial individuals. As a territorial status is linked to higher mating opportunities, it is unclear why animals do not keep high hormonal levels and one explanation is that this would imply survival costs. We have tested this using males of the territorial damselfly Argia emma in the field. We increased juvenile hormone (JH) levels using methoprene in both territorial and nonterritorial males and predicted that: (i) males will keep (the case of territorial males) or become (the case of nonterritorial males) territorial after hormonal increase, and (ii) there will be an increase in mating success for nonterritorial males only and an impaired survival for both male tactics. Hormonally treated males remained or became territorial but had their survival impaired compared with control groups. Also, hormonally treated, ex‐nonterritorial males increased their mating success compared with the other control, nonterritorial males. The reduced survival can be explained proximally by the energy devoted either to the enhanced aggression showed during territory defence or immune function (as detected previously in damselflies). Although nonterritorial males may increase their mating success by switching to a territorial tactic, they are possibly unable to do it naturally as JH is dietary dependent and usually nonterritorial animals are in poorer condition than territorial animals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Nonbreeding shorebirds often alternate social structure between anonymous flocks and territorial behavior in response to different environmental factors. To evaluate specific drivers for one species, we studied the spacing behavior of wintering Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) at Bahía Santa María, northwestern Mexico, using behavioral observations. The density, population structure, and territorial behavior of Western Sandpipers differed among three habitat types. Cattail marshes supported 110 birds per ha, 49% males, and no territorial birds. Mangrove flats supported 288 birds per ha, 58% males, and 5% territorial birds. Brackish flats supported 365 birds per ha, 76% males, and 7% territorial birds. Territories consisted of rectangular strips (5–9 m long, N= 77). Territory length was not related to either bird density or number of territorial birds by plot, but was positively related to nearest bird distance. Aggression rate was inversely related to territory length, suggesting that territory length is set by the costs of defense. Foraging rate was independent of territory length, and prey densities in territories did not differ from those in areas used by nonterritorial birds. Males were more likely to be territorial and had a higher aggression rate than females, suggesting that males, which forage more on surface prey, were more affected by foraging interference. Our results suggest that the territorial behavior of Western Sandpipers in our study was an opportunistic strategy to reduce foraging interference. The variation in spacing behavior we documented provides evidence that interference competition affects the social structure of Western Sandpipers during the nonbreeding season.  相似文献

Adult males of the African cichlid fish Haplochromis burtoni are either territorial or nonterritorial. In nature and aquaria, only territorial males breed and they have markedly more developed testes than do nonterritorial males. Territorial males are clearly dominant over nonterritorial males of the same age and size, and also exhibit higher levels of aggression. In this study, territorial males were gonadectomized in order to assess the effects of lowered androgen levels on their aggression and dominance status. Completely castrated males showed a pronounced reduction in both testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone, as well as significantly lower aggression scores than sham-operated males. Partially castrated males (> 0.005 g gonadal tissue remaining at autopsy) exhibited intermediate levels of both androgen levels and aggression. Surprisingly, in dyadic encounters with normal nonterritorial males of the same size, castrated territorial males retained their dominance despite decreased androgen levels and aggression.  相似文献

Arginine vasotocin (AVT) and its mammalian homologoue arginine vasopressin (AVP) influence male sexual and aggressive behaviors in many species. We tested the effects of AVT and an AVP-V(1a) receptor antagonist on the display of alternative male tactics in a tropical coral reef fish, the bluehead wrasse Thalassoma bifasciatum. We gave AVT injections to territorial and nonterritorial males of the large and colorful phenotype (terminal phase) and an AVP-V(1a) receptor antagonist, Manning compound, to territorial males in the field. AVT increased courtship independent of status, while its effects on territoriality and aggression were dependent upon male status. In territorial males, AVT increased courtship and tended to decrease the number of chases toward initial phase individuals. In nonterritorial males, AVT increased courtship, chases toward initial phase individuals, and territorial behavior while decreasing feeding. These are all behaviors rarely seen in nonterritorial males, so AVT made these males act like territorial TP males. The AVP-V(1a) receptor antagonist had opposite effects. It decreased courtship and territorial defense, making these males act more like nonterritorial males. Manipulations of the AVT system shifted males within a single phenotype from the nonterritorial social status to the territorial social status and vice versa. Since the entire suite of behaviors related to territoriality was affected by AVT system manipulations, our results suggest that the AVT system may play a key role in motivation of behaviors related to mating.  相似文献

Summary I used a mark-recapture study to estimate home areas for 107 red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) in a natural forest habitat. Both males and females of this species defend feeding territories, but I presume that some individuals in this relatively highdensity population (approximately 2.8 salamanders per m2) are nonterritorial floaters. Although territorial salamanders exhibited greater numbers of tail autotomies, they had significantly longer relative tail lengths. This difference suggests that territorial individuals gain benefits from territorial ownership. From the observation that home area size was inversely correlated with body size, I infer that larger animals gained higher quality foraging areas. Home areas of adults were significantly more segregated intrasexually and more aggregated intersexually than would be expected from a random distribution. Furthermore, intersexual overlap of home areas was significantly greater than intrasexual home area overlap. Territorial defense of feeding areas by male and female red-backed salamanders therefore also may play a role in mating behavior.  相似文献

Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), discrete phenotypic variations evolved to maximize fitness, may entail different cost‐benefit trade‐offs. In large mammals, differences in costs associated with ARTs—including energy expenditure and parasite infection—are typically greatest during the breeding season. Nonetheless, physiological and behavioral differences between ARTs can manifest throughout the year, possibly involving costs that may contribute to maintain ARTs within populations. Using the number of nematode larvae per gram of feces (LPG) as a proxy, we explored the temporal changes in lung parasite infection in territorial and nonterritorial male chamois Rupicapra in the Gran Paradiso National Park (Italy), between 2011 and 2012. We aimed to identify which tactic‐specific physiological and behavioral features (including age, hormonal levels, inter‐ and intrasexual interactions, and space use) or climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) best explained yearly variation in parasite infection within and between ARTs. Generalized additive mixed models showed that the fecal larval counts of lung nematodes underwent strong temporal changes in both male types. Differences between ARTs (with higher LPG values in territorial than nonterritorial males) were greatest during the rut and—to a lesser extent—in spring, respectively, at the peak and at the onset of territoriality. The difference in LPG between tactics was largely explained by the greater levels of hormone metabolites in territorial males during the rut. The other variables did not contribute significantly to explain the different shedding of larvae within and between ARTs. Our analysis suggests that different values of LPG between territorial and nonterritorial males are largely a result of tactic‐specific differences in the secretion of hormone metabolites, but only during the rut. To clarify whether rut‐related parasitism contributes to the maintenance of ARTs, tactic‐specific life history trade‐offs, for example, between reproduction and parasite‐related mortality, must be investigated.  相似文献

Lottia gigantea, the owl limpet, is an algal gardener. Territorial individuals actively defend gardens, which consist of clearedareas in the intertidal zone upon which a thick algal filmdevelops and upon which the territory holder feeds. Smaller,nonterritory holders raid these gardens and graze the algalfilm. Territorial individuals must obtain an adequate ration without compromising the productivity of the garden. In contrast,a nonterritory holder grazing on another limpet's territorymust obtain an adequate ration before it contacts the territoryholder and is driven off. In the laboratory, replicate setsof 10 limpets were trained to behave territorially and nonterritorially.Training mimicked natural encounters between territorial andnonterritorial L. gigantea. Limpets given territorial trainingleft significantly (t = -4.92, df = 9, p =.00041) more algalcover behind when grazing (on average 71%) than did limpetstrained to be nonterritorial (on average 50%). Territorial limpets seldom grazed over the same area more than once (4% of the grazedarea). In contrast, nonterritorial limpets frequently foragedover an area more than once; of the area grazed, 20% had beenvisited more than once. Previous agonistic experience determinesboth territorial behavior and foraging strategies, two of thecritical behaviors necessary for successful gardening behavior.Nonterritorial limpets maximize consumption per unit area, whereas territorial limpets appear to forage prudently, leaving a significantly greater proportion of the plant biomass behind.  相似文献

In birds, territorial aggression during the breeding season is regulated by testosterone (T). However, many bird species also express aggressive behavior during the nonbreeding season, when plasma levels of T are low. It has been suggested that during this period estrogens might play a major role in regulating territorial aggression. In the present study we compared the effects of simultaneous blockage of androgenic and estrogenic actions on territorial aggression during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons in free-living male European stonechats (Saxicola torquata rubicola). European stonechats are of particular interest since they establish territories and form pairs during both the breeding and the nonbreeding seasons. Thus territorial aggression and its endocrine control can be compared between reproductive and non-reproductive contexts. Inhibition of androgenic and estrogenic actions by simultaneous application of Flutamide and ATD reduced territorial aggression during the breeding season, but not during the nonbreeding season. Our results show that androgens and/or estrogens are involved in the endocrine control of territorial aggression in stonechats only in a reproductive context, but not in a non-reproductive one.  相似文献

Male Polistes canadensis and P. carnifex aggregate along crests of prominent ridges in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica. At these sites males of both species defend territories (trees and shrubs) by chasing conspecific rivals. Territories do not contain nests or resources that are collected by females. Chasing by territorial males reduces the amount of time spent by intruders in a territory. I describe and contrast male territorial behavior of both species. Some male P. canadensis are territorial while others in the same area exhibit patrolling behavior, flying from one occupied territory to another. Males of P. carnifex exhibit territoriality only. Patrolling in P. canadensis is an outcome of relatively high male density along the ridge, rendering territories in short supply, as shown by the observation that experimentally vacated territories are seized rapidly by formerly patrolling males. Due to a high intraspecific intrusion rate, territorial male P. canadensis spend less time perching and more time flying and chasing intruders from their territories than do male P. carnifex. Males of these two species also differ in the placement of their territories along the ridgeline; P. canadensis occupy territories in saddles while P. carnifex occupy those at peaktops. I show that this divergent spatial pattern is not maintained by competitive exclusion of either species by the other, and I discuss alternative explanations for their separate spatial distributions. Comparative data suggest that males are territorial because females restrict matings to within territories, and I discuss alternative hypotheses to explain this bias in female behavior.  相似文献

We tested whether territorial defence is adaptive in male collared lizards by examining the extent to which territory owners monopolize females. We also tested whether females benefit by mating with multiple males using alternative tactics when local sex ratios varied. Surprisingly, neither the number of offspring that males sired, nor the number of females that males mated with varied as a consequence of highly variable local sex ratios. Moreover, both the number of offspring sired and the number of female mates were independent of male social status. Courtship frequency was under positive directional sexual selection for mating success for territorial males. None of the phenotypic traits that we examined were targets of sexual selection in nonterritorial males. Although offspring survivorship decreased with the degree of multiple mating, females mated multiply with similar numbers of territorial and nonterritorial males during all three seasons. Females did not obtain material or genetic benefits that balanced the apparent offspring survival cost imposed by mating with multiple males. A single population of a common pond dragonfly, Libellula luctuosa, was studied at a site where the density of males increased dramatically during the breeding season. Early in the summer one active male was found on each territory on the pond. Satellite males were only occasionally found on the territories. Later in the season the number of males per territory increased so that two or more males simultaneously defended on many of the territories, and several satellite males occupied each of the territories. The number and rate of female visitations per day did not change over the summer. These factors resulted in a change in the operational sex ratio with variations in male density. Male behavior was also altered with increasing population density. As male density increased, males were less likely to be seen perching on their territories and more likely to be seen performing aggressive acts such as chasing nearby territorial males and chasing intruders. At high male density, the duration of territorial behaviors was shorter than at low male density. Thus, the percent of a time budget spent in any one activity did not change despite the change in number of males present. Male activity in L. luctuosa is not strictly determined by the opportunity for aggression. Costs of aggression associated with territoriality are minimized by maintaining flexible territorial behaviors.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that courtship trait expression indicates immune strength. However, most studies have measured only one immune parameter, have not assessed individual differences in immune ability according to time and have not controlled for ecological differences among individuals after an immune challenge. In this work, we tested this hypothesis and controlled for these factors using males of the American rubyspot damselfly which bear a wing red spot whose size is evolutionarily maintained via male-male territorial competition. Our general hypothesis was that territorial, large-spotted males, had a better immune ability compared to nonterritorial, small-spotted males. We expected that the following variables were greater in territorial males compared to nonterritorial males: spot size, phenoloxidase (PO) and hydrolytic enzymatic (HE) activity in males challenged and nonchallenged with a nylon implant, PO and HE activity rate; PO activity after a Serratia marcescens challenge, and survival after a nylon challenge controlling for activity and feeding differences. We found that territorial males showed larger spot areas, greater PO and HE activity (independently of whether they were challenged or not), a higher rate of PO and HE activity (but only expressed at 8h), greater PO production after the bacterial challenge, and a higher survival after the challenge. These results corroborate that males with more pronounced sexual traits have a superior immune function.  相似文献

Two potential strategies for acquiring territories are (1) fighting and taking over a territory from its owner, or (2) waiting until a territory owner dies and then taking its place. In this paper we explore territory acquisition using these two strategies, using a population dynamical model. Factors expected to affect the predominance of each strategy are injury rate, rate of successful territory takeover, birth and death rates on the territory, and birth and death rates while non-territorial. We explore the effects of these parameters on numbers of territorial and nonterritorial fighters and waiters. Waiters predominate when injury rate, birth rate of nonterritorial individuals, and death rate of territory owners are high. Fighters predominate when rate of successful territory takeover, death rate of nonterritorial individuals, and birth rate of territory owners are high. We present supportive evidence for these preditions from the literature.  相似文献

The present population of Golden Eagles in Germany consists of 48–50 territorial pairs in the Alps (10 % of them with homeranges extending beyond the border to Austria) and a considerable amount of nonterritorial individuals (mostly immat.). As the production is very low (0.25 resp. 0.18 fledglings/pair x year) nonterritorial birds form an important breeding reserve. At least within last decades, the abundance seemed to be fairly constant. At present, the German population depends on immigration from other parts of the alpine population.  相似文献

Summary In many vertebrates, seasonal activation of sexual and territorial behaviors coincides with seasonal gonadal activation and is caused by the increase in sex steroid hormones. Both male and femaleSceloporus jarrovi are territorial, but in this species territorial behavior is seasonally activated in late April, months before seasonal gonadal maturation, which occurs in August prior to the fall mating season. Measurements of seasonal changes in circulating levels of the sex steroid hormones testosterone, progesterone, and estradiol indicated that testosterone levels in both sexes are elevated when territorial behavior is expressed, even during the period of nonbreeding-season territoriality during the summer. This suggests that a nonbreeding season behavior is activated by a sex steroid hormone in this species.  相似文献

Summary Individually marked red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) could be distinguished as territorial or non-territorial from November till the next spring. Territorial birds survived well and many reared young, but numerous nonterritorial birds died or disappeared, and none paired up or reared young. Differences in spring sex ratio between years had already been set in the previous autumn's territorial stock. Many old birds which had been territorial in earlier seasons lost territories after an annual re-distribution of territory each October–November. Thereafter very few of them were seen alive on the area over the winter, and many were found dead, whereas nearly all old birds that kept their territories were still there in spring. The number of birds in spring and the fate of individuals over winter were predicted reasonably accurately from observations of behaviour in the previous November–December. Thus, differences of social class in autumn were critical to a bird's survival to breed in the next summer and to its chances of contesting for territory and breeding in subsequent years.  相似文献

Chemical communication by scent‐marking is widespread among mammals and can serve different purposes, such as territory demarcation, mate attraction and self‐advertisement. In this study, we examined scent‐marking behavior by subordinate Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) in a population in southeast Norway. We conducted scent experiments in 18 family groups, simulating a territory intruder using experimental scent mounds (ESM). In total, we recorded 196 territorial reactions (destroying and/or overmarking of scent mounds). Subordinates contributed 14% of all territorial reactions and first overmarked 12% of the ESM, and the number of subordinates in the family group did not increase the total number of territorial reactions. This suggests that the contribution by subordinates plays a minor role in territorial defense. The number of territorial reactions by subordinates was positively related to the age of their parents, suggesting that subordinates might take over territorial duties with increasing parental senescence, likely because they have increased chances of inheriting the territory. Increased experience in territorial activities possibly helps subordinates to successfully gain and defend a territory of their own.  相似文献

The standard length, diurnal activities, territory sizes, and areas over which individuals foraged and the nutritional condition of territorial and non-territorial Cynotilapia afra and Pseudotropheus zebra were compared. Results show that territorial tenureship in these fishes does not depend on the male size, implying that aggressiveness, experience and motivation are more important in the maintenance of territory. However, terri-toriality in C. afra (t = 10.93, P < 0.05) and P. zebra (t = 3.31, P < 0.05) manifests itself in the reduction of nutritional condition because territorial males engage in energetically more demanding activities, e.g. courtship displays, fertilizing ripe females and chasing intruders that trespass into their territories. Territorial C. afra (t = 4.77; P < 0.05) and P. zebra (t = 5.89; P < 0.05) also fed over significantly smaller areas and spent significantly less time feeding than did non-territorial males. The biological significance of territoriality in these fish species is therefore not food intake, but mate attraction and reproductive success for which they trade off their nutritional condition. However, there might be a nutritional threshold below which the cost out-weighs the benefit. Hence, territorial males in poorer health abandon their territories in order to regain their condition.  相似文献

Duets in breeding pairs may reflect a situation of conflict, whereby an individual answers its partner's song as a form of unilateral acoustic mate guarding or, alternatively, it may reflect cooperation, when individuals share in territory defense or safeguard the partnership. The degree of coordination between the sexes when responding to solo versus paired intruders may elucidate the function of songs in duets. We examined this issue in a study with rufous horneros (Furnarius rufus), a duetting, socially monogamous Neotropical species with low levels of extrapair paternity. We exposed social pairs during the nonbreeding season to playbacks of duets, male solos, female solos, and control heterospecific songs. Partners approached all conspecific stimuli together and responded by singing quickly, at higher rates and by coordinating ~80% of their songs into duets. For both sexes, most response variables (seven of nine) did not vary across conspecific treatments. These results suggest that partners duet and coordinate behaviors to cooperatively defend common territories. However, females spent more time in territorial vigilance, and partners were highly coordinated (correlated responses) in response to duets and female solos in comparison with male solos. This indicates that female intrusions (paired or solo) might be more threatening than male intrusions in the nonbreeding season, especially for territorial females, and that females are less cooperative with their partners in territory defense against male intruders.  相似文献

In many species, male territorial aggression is tightly coupled with gonadal secretion of testosterone (T). In contrast, in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia morphna), males are highly aggressive during the breeding (spring) and nonbreeding (autumn and early winter) seasons, but not during molt (late summer). In aggressive nonbreeding song sparrows, plasma T levels are basal (< or = 0.10 ng/ml), and castration has no effect on aggression. However, aromatase inhibitors reduce nonbreeding aggression, indicating a role for estrogen in wintering males. In the nonbreeding season, the substrate for brain aromatase is unclear, because plasma T and androstenedione levels are basal. Aromatizable androgen may be derived from plasma dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an androgen precursor. DHEA circulates at elevated levels in wintering males (approximately 0.8 ng/ml) and might be locally converted to T in the brain. Moreover, plasma DHEA is reduced during molt, as is aggression. Here, we experimentally increased DHEA in wild nonbreeding male song sparrows and examined territorial behaviors (e.g., singing) and discrete neural regions controlling the production of song. A physiological dose of DHEA for 15 days increased singing in response to simulated territorial intrusions. In addition, DHEA treatment increased the volume of a telencephalic brain region (the HVc) controlling song, indicating that DHEA can have large-scale neuroanatomical effects in adult animals. The DHEA treatment also caused a slight increase in plasma T. Exogenous DHEA may have been metabolized to sex steroids within the brain to exert these behavioral and neural effects, and it is also possible that peripheral metabolism contributed to these effects. These are the first results to suggest that exogenous DHEA increases male-male aggression and the size of an entire brain region in adults. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that DHEA regulates territorial behavior, especially in the nonbreeding season, when plasma T is basal.  相似文献
