In general, ectoparasitoids attack concealed hosts in protected situations whereas endoparasitoids use both concealed and exposed hosts. The difference is assumed to be the consequence of ecological constraints; ectoparasitic larvae are vulnerable both to predation and to climatic factors such as rainfall, and, hence, require some structures to protect themselves. I hypothesized that such ecological constraints should act as a within-species selection pressure to female ectoparasitoids, and hence that females should recognize the degree of concealment of the host and prefer concealed over exposed hosts for oviposition. To test this hypothesis, I examined 1) whether host concealment could influence host acceptance by the ectoparasitoid wasp Agrothereutes lanceolatus and 2) whether host concealment could influence the fitness of the offspring. Female wasps recognized and attacked (probed) both cocooned and exposed host prepupae in equal proportions, but discriminated between them after ovipositor insertion, and preferred the former for oviposition and the latter for host-feeding. They also selected to oviposit on hosts concealed in paper tubes. Thus host concealment was important for host selection in A. lanceolatus . Offspring fitness (measured as survival and size) was much lower on exposed hosts than on cocooned and paper-concealed hosts, even under laboratory conditions. Thus, host concealment influenced the fitness of wasp offspring, and, hence, is a good indicator of host quality for female wasps. Adaptiveness of host selection and host-feeding in A. lanceolatus in relation to host concealment is discussed.  相似文献

Dibrachys boarmiae was recently found as a parasitoid of the pistachio twig borer moth, Kermania pistaciella, an important pistachio pest in Iran. Several biological and behavioural aspects of the wasp were studied under controlled conditions using three different lepidopterous host species, K. pistaciella, Sitotroga cerealella and Galleria mellonella. Development time from egg to adult decreases from 54 days at 15°C to 12.6 days at 32.5°C. The thermal constant was estimated 270°D, and the lower development threshold was at 9.9°C. Longevity of females that had the opportunity to oviposit and access to food (honey) was on average 23 days, and 134 offspring were produced during 13 days of oviposition. Ninety percent of ovipositions occur during the first 10 days of the parasitoid's life, although no pre-oviposition period was found. If females were deprived of food, longevity as well as fecundity, were drastically reduced to 8 days and only 79 offspring respectively. Females were able to mate immediately after emergence and the sex ratio of the progeny was strongly female biased on all examined hosts, especially on the largest host G. mellonella (0.08 male). When females were kept with a male throughout their life, the total number of progeny decreased to 92 wasps on average but the sex ratio was unaffected. The parasitoid significantly preferred to attack the pre-pupal stage, and this influenced the size of clutches allocated to different host stages. The parasitoid laid larger clutches on bigger hosts.  相似文献

Abstract: Mass rearing techniques are essential elements in developing a reliable and economic biological control method for Orius sauteri, a promising indigenous Orius species for biological control of Thrips palmi in greenhouses. Orius sauteri was reared on Ephestia kuehniella eggs and life history parameters and the minimum number of E. kuehniella eggs for rearing O. sauteri individuals were measured at 25°C and L16:D8. Developmental time during the nymphal stages was about 14 days for both sexes. Total fecundity and female longevity were 103.9 and 27.9 days, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase per day was 0.115. An individual requires at least 30 eggs for nymphal development and survival and 20 eggs for adult oviposition and survival per four days.  相似文献

In a previous study, we showed that Spiroplasma, a maternally transmitted endosymbiotic bacterium of Drosophila hydei, enhances larval to adult survival of its host when exposed to oviposition attack by the parasitoid wasp Leptopilina heterotoma. The mechanism by which Spiroplasma enhances host survival has not been elucidated. To better understand this mechanism, we compared the growth of wasp larvae in Spiroplasma-infected and uninfected hosts. Our results indicate that wasp embryos in Spiroplasma-infected hosts hatch and grow normally for ~2 days, after which their growth is severely impaired, compared to wasps developing in uninfected hosts. Thus, despite their reduced ability to complete development in Spiroplasma-infected hosts, developing wasps may exert fitness costs on their hosts that are manifested after host emergence. The severity of these costs will influence the degree to which this protective mechanism contributes to the long-term persistence of Spiroplasma in D. hydei. We therefore examined survival to 10-day-old adult stage and fecundity of Spiroplasma-infected flies surviving a wasp treatment. Our results suggest detrimental effects of wasp attack on longevity of Spiroplasma-infected adult flies. However, compared to Spiroplasma-free flies exposed to wasps, Spiroplasma-infected flies exposed to wasps have ~5 times greater survival from larva to 10 day-adult. The relative fecundity of wasp-attacked Spiroplasma-infected females was ~71% that of un-attacked Spiroplasma-free females. Our combined survival and female fecundity results suggest that under high wasp parasitism, the reproductive fitness of Spiroplasma-infected flies may be ~3.5 times greater than that of uninfected females, so it is potentially relevant to the persistence of Spiroplasma in natural populations of D. hydei. Interestingly, Spiroplasma-infected males surviving a wasp attack were effectively sterile during the 3-day period examined. This observation is consistent with the expectation that, as a maternally transmitted symbiont, there is little selective pressure on Spiroplasma to enhance the reproductive fitness of its male hosts.  相似文献

Foraging behavior for hosts in parasitoids resembles that of predators with respect to finding, evaluating and manipulating of the prey. Host handling time may depend on the life history of the parasitoid and can be affected by oviposition experience. Additionally, handling time can be affected by host aggregation, species, size and state (parasitized or not). We studied handling times in the egg-larval parasitoid wasp Copidosoma koehleri. We allowed naïve female wasps to oviposit into three consecutive unparasitized hosts, and measured time until oviposition, and the duration of ovipositor insertion. We recorded the same data for naïve females ovipositing into already parasitized hosts. We found that both previous experience by females and previous parasitism of hosts reduced handling time. The results suggest that host handling durations reflect the interplay between host state and parasitoid internal state.  相似文献

Optimal foraging shapes host preference of a polyphagous leafminer   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Abstract.  1. Most research on host selection by arthropods is based on optimal oviposition theory. This theory, also called the oviposition preference–offspring performance hypothesis, predicts that a female will choose those hosts for oviposition on which larvae perform best. Recent studies suggested, however, that optimal foraging by adults, or the quality of the host for adult performance, might also influence host choice.
2. This study investigated whether host preference of the polyphagous leafminer Liriomyza trifolii is determined by optimal foraging and/or optimal oviposition.
3. Female realised fecundity correlated nearly perfectly with feeding and oviposition preference of L. trifolii . The relationships between host preference and the offspring performance measures were always weaker. Hosts optimal for adult nutrition were also optimal for offspring performance but not vice versa . Hence, it was concluded that optimal foraging shapes feeding and oviposition preference of L. trifolii as this is the best strategy in order to maximise female fitness.  相似文献

Lifetime reproductive success in female insects is often egg‐ or time‐limited. For instance in pro‐ovigenic species, when oviposition sites are abundant, females may quickly become devoid of eggs. Conversely, in the absence of suitable oviposition sites, females may die before laying all of their eggs. In pollinating fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae), each species has an obligate mutualism with its host fig tree species [Ficus spp. (Moraceae)]. These pro‐ovigenic wasps oviposit in individual ovaries within the inflorescences of monoecious Ficus (syconia, or ‘figs’), which contain many flowers. Each female flower can thus become a seed or be converted into a wasp gall. The mystery is that the wasps never oviposit in all fig ovaries, even when a fig contains enough wasp females with enough eggs to do so. The failure of all wasps to translate all of their eggs into offspring clearly contributes to mutualism persistence, but the underlying causal mechanisms are unclear. We found in an undescribed Brazilian Pegoscapus wasp population that the lifetime reproductive success of lone foundresses was relatively unaffected by constraints on oviposition. The number of offspring produced by lone foundresses experimentally introduced into receptive figs was generally lower than the numbers of eggs carried, despite the fact that the wasps were able to lay all or most of their eggs. Because we excluded any effects of intraspecific competitors and parasitic non‐pollinating wasps, our data suggest that some pollinators produce few offspring because some of their eggs or larvae are unviable or are victims of plant defences.  相似文献

1. Fitness is related to reproduction and survival. There apparently exists a negative correlation between the numbers of male and female offspring. There also exists a trade-off between survival and reproduction. This paper investigates optimal decisions with the reproduction and survival trade-off in host selection by wasps.
2. Whereas inseminated female wasps could manipulate the sex of their offspring, virgin females produced only male offspring. I surveyed behavioural differences and the consequences of oviposition by inseminated and virgin females of a solitary parasitic wasp in host choice situations.
3. Two host types were available at the same time to both inseminated and virgin female wasps: one (a 17-day-old host in one bean) presenting difficulties for the laying of eggs, but more benefits for the offspring and the other (five 12- or 13-day-old hosts in one bean) easier for the female wasp for laying of eggs but less beneficial for the offspring.
4. Inseminated female wasps chose more 17-day-old hosts than 12-day-old hosts, but more 13-day-old hosts than 17-day-old hosts in each pair-wise choice. Virgin females chose the smaller hosts in both situations.
5. Virgin females, having greater longevity than inseminated females, laid larger numbers of eggs than the inseminated females during their lifetime by adopting an energy-saving host choice that had little effect on male offspring fitness.  相似文献

1. Acceptance of hosts for oviposition is often hardwired in short‐lived insects, but can be dynamic at the individual level due to variation in physiological state determinants such as ageing and prior oviposition. However, the effect of the oviposition history of resources together with time taken to accept less preferred hosts in ageing insects has rarely been investigated. 2. The time taken by parasitic fig wasps to accept resources with different oviposition histories was recorded in order to investigate the effect of wasp physiological state and resource oviposition history on oviposition behaviour. These wasps, which differ in life‐history traits, oviposit at specific developmental stages of enclosed fig inflorescences called syconia. 3. Behavioural assays were performed with naive wasps and wasps aged with and without prior oviposition experience. Syconia at the same developmental stage but differing in oviposition history were offered in no‐choice assays and the time taken to first oviposition attempt was recorded. 4. One short‐lived pro‐ovigenic galler species exhibited a decline with age in time taken to accept a syconium for oviposition. The exact timing of the transition from non‐acceptance to acceptance of less preferred syconia was determined in terms of the proportion of elapsed life span at the transition; this occurred at 25% of elapsed life span. 5. Longer‐lived parasitoids did not show any decline in specificity despite being aged for 50% of their life span. Therefore, host quality, trophic position, egg load and age may individually affect oviposition decisions or have interaction effects.  相似文献

The gregarious endoparasitoids Tetrastichus brontispae Ferrière is one of the important natural enemies of the coconut hispine beetle Brontispa longissima (Gestro), a serious invasive pest on coconut palm plants (Cocos nucifera L.) in Southeast Asia. Development at different temperatures, effect of host and female ages, effect of food and oviposition frequency and superparasitism were investigated in the laboratory. Females were allowed only one attack against one host in all experiments. The wasp developed in a host between 19 and 30°C, whilst no wasp completed its immature development at 16 and 31°C. Host and female ages affected parasitisation. Parasitoid emergence was high on day 0 and day 1 pupal hosts, and younger females produced more offspring than older females. The longevity of the female was affected not only by food supply, but also by oviposition frequency. The female survived longer when oviposition frequency was low. However, the total number of hosts parasitised by the female during her lifetime did not differ at different oviposition frequencies. In superparasitism, although the percentage of adult emergence and body size of offspring decreased with an increasing number of attacks per host, a host parasitised by up to four females could produce parasitoid offspring.  相似文献

The developmental time, survival and reproduction of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom., Aphididae), were evaluated on detached cotton leaves at five constant and two alternating temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 25/30, and 30/35°C). The developmental periods of the immature stages ranged from 12.0 days at 15°C to 4.5 days at 30°C. A constant temperature of 35°C was lethal to the immature stages of A. gossypii. The lower developmental threshold for the cotton aphid was estimated at 6.2°C and it required 108.9 degree-days for a first instar to become adult. The average longevity of adult females was reduced from 39.7 days at 15°C to 12.6 days at 30/35°C. The average reproduction rate per female was 51.5 at 25/30°C and 20.9 at 30/35°C. Mean generation time of the population ranged from 10.4 days at 30°C to 24.5 days at 15°C. The largest per capita growth rate ( r m = 0.413) occurred at 30°C, the smallest at 15°C ( r m = 0.177). It was evident that temperatures over 30°C prolonged development, increased the mortality of the immature stages, shortened adult longevity, and reduced fecundity. The optimal range of temperature for population growth of A. gossypii on cotton was 25/30–30°C.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Ceratobaeus spp. enter the nest of their host spider and oviposit into eggs through the thin silk eggsac.
2. Temperatures below 15° C limit oviposition by slowing parasites down.
3. Males emerge prior to females and mate with their sibs. Sex ratios of 6.6–6.0:1 in favour of females were observed in the field and laboratory for two species.
4. Even though females can oviposit almost immediately after emergence their full complement of eggs (= 65) is not reached until several days later.
5. Superparasitism is low and appears to occur from subsequent accidental ovipositions. No marking of the external surface of hosts was observed.
6. Parasites overwinter as adults under bark. They do not feed as adults nor do they reabsorb their eggs, but rather oviposit as soon as host eggs become available in spring.
7. Successful oviposition occurs in later stages of host eggs reared at 15° C and 20° C than it does at 25°C. Different rates of development between host and parasite is proposed as an explanation for this phenomenon.
8. The species studied show varying degrees of specificity but each has a dominant host. Location of hosts involves cues from the habitat (bark), silk nests of spiders, and some factor associated with host eggs.  相似文献

Abstract.  The influence of long- and short-day cycles on ovipostion and egg hatch of the corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides were investigated at a range of temperatures. Oviposition was suppressed when insects are exposed to long days through their immature stages and then transferred to short days after mating. Moreover, mean oviposition and egg hatch increased from 15 to 27.5 °C, whereas oviposition declined significantly at 30 °C at both photoperiodic regimes. Females derived from a diapausing population exposed to long days after mating showed a significantly higher egg production compared to females derived from a nondiapausing population. However, when females from a diapausing population were left to oviposit under short days, fewer eggs were produced compared to those exposed to long days after mating. Thus, photoperiod appears to affect reproductive traits of this species in a quantitative manner. Larval diapause duration is positively correlated with fecundity of the adults. There is also a positive correlation between pupal weight of individuals derived from a diapausing population and the postdiapause fecundity of adults.

To complement existing information on the mortality of larvae of the wasp Cotesia plutellae attacking moth caterpillars infected with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) we tested the direct and indirect effects of the bacterium on adult wasp longevity and oviposition behaviour. In one experiment with female parasitoids, mean longevity (SEM) was not significantly different between females exposed to Bt (1.98 +/- 0.08 days) and those not exposed (2.18 +/- 0.13 days). In a second experiment with both males and females, Bt treatment did not significantly effect either male or female parasitoids exposed to Bt. To observe the possible effects of Bt on oviposition behaviour of C. plutellae each of 10 females were given five larvae that had been treated with Bt and five untreated larvae at the same time. All parasitoids were observed to make oviposition attempts in both untreated and treated larvae. Upon dissection of the host larvae, one or more C. plutellae eggs were found in each of the larvae in which a parasitoid attempted oviposition. There was no effect of Bt treatment on parasitoid oviposition. The mean number of ovipositions in treated larvae (4.3 +/- 0.3) was not significantly different from untreated larvae (4.7 +/- 0.2).  相似文献

The thermal characteristics of a colony of Apoica flavissima , an epiponine wasp, were examined. The nest, with a diameter of slightly less than 30 cm, was built on a twig of an orange tree. The temperature of the roof surface fluctuated greatly, ranging between 19.1 and 41.5°C. However, the temperature in the central cell was kept constant at around 27°C throughout a day. Although heavy rain pelted the nest roof in the morning, the central cell maintained temperatures higher than 25°C. On the contrary, after all immature and adult wasps were removed the temperature in the nest fluctuated considerably. The presence of immature individuals and adult wasps densely covering the under surface of the comb seemed to function as an effective insulator. The smaller temperature fluctuation in the central cell than on the roof surface, when the nest was in the empty state, suggests that the thick spongy tissue of the roof made from curled plant leaf hairs serves as an insulator to prevent the conduction of solar heat into the cells and the outward flow of heat generated in cells, especially at night.  相似文献

Life history parameters of Amitus fuscipennis MacGown and Nebeker as parasitoid of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) were determined at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C on tomato using three different methods. For each method, immature development, mortality, longevity, fecundity, oviposition frequency and post-oviposition period were determined and temperature-dependent relations were estimated. Oviposition frequency was also estimated as a function of parasitoid age. Immature development had a maximum of 61 days at 15°C that decreased to 22 days at 30°C. Mortality in the grey stage was less than 2% at temperatures lower than 30°C, where it was 60%. Longevity fluctuated between 3 and 18 days. Fecundity increased from 338 eggs/female at 15°C to a maximum of 430 eggs/female at 25°C and then decreased to 119 eggs/female at 30°C. Oviposition frequency varied between 3 and 46 eggs/female per day and had its maximum on the first day after emergence of the parasitoid. Net reproduction rate, generation time and intrinsic rate of increase were calculated. The intrinsic rate of increase increased from 0.090 at 15°C to a maximum of 0.233 at 25°C and then decreased to 0.159 at 30°C. The influence of the methods to determine the life history parameters on the results is discussed. The results are compared also with the life history of Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hym., Aphelinidae) a parasitoid of the same host. The advantages and disadvantages of the pro-ovigenic A. fuscipennis in comparison with the synovigenic E. formosa are discussed.  相似文献

Adult size, longevity, egg load dynamics and oviposition ofMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. which began their development in the first, second, third (preferred hosts) or fourth (non-preferred hosts) instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) were studied. The parasitoid size was largely determined by the initial host size at parasitism. Non-ovipositing females derived from older hosts lived for longer periods than those derived from younger ones. However, the ovipositing females, irrespective of their size, lived for almost the same periods. At emergence, the oviducts of adult females contain a significant amount of mature eggs available for oviposition for a few hours on eclosion day. Egg load increases during the early phase of adult life. The amount of additional mature eggs and rate of egg maturation per hour was greater for wasps derived from preferred hosts compared with those in females derived from non-preferred hosts. The pattern of egg production in M. rufiventris females depended on the availability of hosts for parasitization. Host-deprived females depleted the egg complement with aging; the longer the host deprivation, the lower the oviduct egg load. Marked reduction in both realized or potential fecundity of host-deprived females was observed following host availability. Host privation for more than 3 days induced a marked deficit fecundity pattern through the female' s life. The realized fecundity was determined by the interaction among host availability, the number of eggs that are matured over the female' s life span, oviposition rate and host size from which the female was derived. These results suggest that: (i) M. rufiventris wasp is a weak synovigenic species; (ii) the maturation of additional eggs is inhibited once the maximum oviduct egg load is reached; (iii) the egg load of the newly emerged female is significantly less than the realized fecundity; and (iv) because M. rufiventris females oviposit fewer eggs when they begin depleting their egg supply at 3 days, augmentative releases will require release immediately following emergence to ensure the highest parasitization rate in the field.  相似文献
