Multimedia data held by Natural History Museums and Universities are presently not readily accessible, even within the natural history community itself. The EU project OpenUp! is an effort to mobilise scientific biological multimedia resources and open them to a wider audience using the EUROPEANA data standards and portal. The connection between natural history and EUROPEANA is accomplished using well established BioCASe and GBIF technologies. This is complemented with a system for data quality control, data transformation and semantic enrichment. With this approach, OpenUp! will provide at least 1,1 Million multimedia objects to EUROPEANA by 2014. Its lean infrastructure is sustainable within the natural history community and will remain functional and effective in the post-project phase.  相似文献

GermOnline is a web-accessible relational database that enables life scientists to make a significant and sustained contribution to the annotation of genes relevant for the fields of mitosis, meiosis, germ line development and gametogenesis across species. This novel approach to genome annotation includes a platform for knowledge submission and curation as well as microarray data storage and visualization hosted by a global network of servers. Electronic devices consume energy both in the production and the use phase. Furthermore, the “hidden” impacts linked to their use are not frequently assessed and they depend on the behavior of the users, besides the servers and complex web networks. It must be underlined that many websites employ ads and trackers as part of their monetization strategy and, in order for online ads and trackers to work, they add an additional code to be executed on the users’ machines, which in turn requires more processing power. Considering that the Internet had an estimated 4.9 billion users in 2021, the global energy and carbon impacts of online ads and trackers might be significant. To investigate this phenomenon, we designed a novel automated framework for bottom-up estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions attributable to software using exclusively free and open source software. Our process involved the building of a random sample of global news websites which we visited with and without an ad-blocker, each time collecting power usage in identical conditions. The gathered data were put into an ordinary least squares (OLS)-based linear regression model, which showed that ads and trackers on news websites require on average an additional 6.13 W of power on personal computers. This result was then tuned to global environmental and technological parameters to estimate that in 2019, on the client side, ads and trackers on the news websites consumed 0.61 TWh of electrical energy, emitted 0.29 MtCO2eq of GHG, and cost all Internet users approximately 140 million USD (purchasing power parity) of electrical energy. The benefits to medical practitioners of using the Internet are growing rapidly as the Internet becomes easier to use and ever more biomedical resources become available on line. The Internet is the largest computer network in the world; it is also a virtual community, larger than many nation states, with its own rules of behaviour or "netiquette." There are several types of Internet connection and various ways of acquiring a connection. Once connected, you can obtain, free of charge, programs that allow easy use of the Internet''s resources and help on how to use these resources; you can access many of these resources through the hypertext references in the on line version of this series (go to http:@www.bmj.com/bmj/ to reach the electronic version). You can then explore the various methods for accessing, manipulating, or disseminating data on the Internet, such as electronic mail, telnet, file transfer protocol, and the world wide web. The laterophysic connection is a novel specialization in chaetodontid butterflyfish, in which paired diverticula of the swim-bladder ('horns') extend anteriorly and approach or directly contact a medial fossa in the lateral line canal contained within the supracleithrum. This study examined the morphology of the laterophysic connection in eight ecologically diverse species belonging to five subgenera within Chaetodon. Two types of laterophysic connections, indirect and direct, were found among Chaetodon species. Intraspecific variation (including sexual dimorphism) in the morphology of the laterophysic connection was not found. The type of laterophysic connection is not correlated with ecological characteristics among Chaetodon species, but appears to be correlated with subgeneric affinities of Chaetodon species. The presence of swim-bladder horns probably increases pressure sensitivity to the inner ear. It is suggested that the presence of a direct laterophysic connection, and possibly an indirect laterophysic connection, imparts pressure sensitivity to the lateral line canal system as well.  相似文献

The rapid growth of Internet applications has made communication anonymity an increasingly important or even indispensable security requirement. Onion routing has been employed as an infrastructure for anonymous communication over a public network, which provides anonymous connections that are strongly resistant to both eavesdropping and traffic analysis. However, existing onion routing protocols usually exhibit poor performance due to repeated encryption operations. In this paper, we first present an improved anonymous multi-receiver identity-based encryption (AMRIBE) scheme, and an improved identity-based one-way anonymous key agreement (IBOWAKE) protocol. We then propose an efficient onion routing protocol named AIB-OR that provides provable security and strong anonymity. Our main approach is to use our improved AMRIBE scheme and improved IBOWAKE protocol in onion routing circuit construction. Compared with other onion routing protocols, AIB-OR provides high efficiency, scalability, strong anonymity and fault tolerance. Performance measurements from a prototype implementation show that our proposed AIB-OR can achieve high bandwidths and low latencies when deployed over the Internet.  相似文献

With the fast development of Internet and WWW, “information overload” has become an overwhelming problem, and collective attention of users will play a more important role nowadays. As a result, knowing how collective attention distributes and flows among different websites is the first step to understand the underlying dynamics of attention on WWW. In this paper, we propose a method to embed a large number of web sites into a high dimensional Euclidean space according to the novel concept of flow distance, which both considers connection topology between sites and collective click behaviors of users. With this geometric representation, we visualize the attention flow in the data set of Indiana university clickstream over one day. It turns out that all the websites can be embedded into a 20 dimensional ball, in which, close sites are always visited by users sequentially. The distributions of websites, attention flows, and dissipations can be divided into three spherical crowns (core, interim, and periphery). 20% popular sites (Google.com, Myspace.com, Facebook.com, etc.) attracting 75% attention flows with only 55% dissipations (log off users) locate in the central layer with the radius 4.1. While 60% sites attracting only about 22% traffics with almost 38% dissipations locate in the middle area with radius between 4.1 and 6.3. Other 20% sites are far from the central area. All the cumulative distributions of variables can be well fitted by “S”-shaped curves. And the patterns are stable across different periods. Thus, the overall distribution and the dynamics of collective attention on websites can be well exhibited by this geometric representation.  相似文献

Mapping of human chromosome 22 with a panel of somatic cell hybrids   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
The adenylosuccinate lyase (ADSL) which is essential for generating adenylate, maps to the long arm of chromosome 22. By using a Chinese hamster ovary cell line deficient in ADSL activity, we have constructed a set of 17 somatic cell hybrids containing defined regions of human chromosome 22. This panel was extended with six additional hybrids, obtained in other laboratories using various methods of selection. Southern analysis of the hybrids with 38 chromosome 22 probes defined 14 different subregions which could be linearly organized on the long arm of chromosome 22. The order of the probes thus deduced is fully compatible with their previous localization and with the genetic map. The ADSL gene was further sublocalized between the MB and D22S22. This panel, which enables the rapid assignment of chromosome 22 single copy probes to small subregions, will be an important tool in the construction of a detailed physical map of this part of the genome.  相似文献

Replication of Web Services has an important role among techniques that have been developed in order to meet the demand for faster and more efficient access to the Internet. Replication can be addressed both by a cluster of servers, and by servers geographically distributed in the Internet. In this paper, we focus on geographical replication. Two approaches are commonly used for geographical replication: server-side and client-side. In the client-side approach, the client has a significant role in the policy used to exploit Web Service Replication. In the server-side approach, the client transparently exploits a Replicated Web Service. Both server-side and client-side approaches provide various strategies that can be adopted. An analysis of these strategies, and an overall classification, is presented here. Finally, client-side and server-side approaches are compared, identifying their pros and cons in order to propose the features of an eventual complete approach.  相似文献

Abstract

Antennas from various wireless communications systems [e.g. mobile phones base transceiver stations (BTS) and handsets used by passengers, public Internet access, staff radiophone transmitters used between engine-drivers and traffic operators] emitting radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) are used inside underground metro public transportation. Frequency-selective exposimetric investigations of RF-EMR exposure inside the metro infrastructure in Warsaw (inside metro cars passing between stations and on platforms) were performed. The statistical parameters of exposure to the E-field were analyzed for each frequency range and for a total value (representing the wide-band result of measurements of complex exposure). The recorded exposimetric profiles showed the dominant RF-EMR sources: handsets and BTS of mobile communication systems (GSM 900 and UMTS 2100) and local wireless Internet access (WiFi 2G). Investigations showed that the GSM 900 system is the dominant source of exposure – BTS (incessantly active) on platforms, and handsets – used by passengers present nearby during the tube drive. The recorded E-field varies between sources (for BTS were: medians – 0.22?V/m and 75th percentile – 0.37?V/m; and for handsets: medians – 0.28?V/m and 75th percentile – 0.47?V/m). Maximum levels (peaks) of exposure recorded from mobile handsets exceeded 10?V/m (upper limit of used exposimeters). Broadband measurements of E-field, including the dominant signal emitted by staff radiophones (151?MHz), showed that the level of this exposure of engine-drivers does not exceed 2.5?V/m.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel framework for Visual Exploratory Search of Relationship Graphs on Smartphones (VESRGS) that is composed of three major components: inference and representation of semantic relationship graphs on the Web via meta-search, visual exploratory search of relationship graphs through both querying and browsing strategies, and human-computer interactions via the multi-touch interface and mobile Internet on smartphones. In comparison with traditional lookup search methodologies, the proposed VESRGS system is characterized with the following perceived advantages. 1) It infers rich semantic relationships between the querying keywords and other related concepts from large-scale meta-search results from Google, Yahoo! and Bing search engines, and represents semantic relationships via graphs; 2) the exploratory search approach empowers users to naturally and effectively explore, adventure and discover knowledge in a rich information world of interlinked relationship graphs in a personalized fashion; 3) it effectively takes the advantages of smartphones’ user-friendly interfaces and ubiquitous Internet connection and portability. Our extensive experimental results have demonstrated that the VESRGS framework can significantly improve the users’ capability of seeking the most relevant relationship information to their own specific needs. We envision that the VESRGS framework can be a starting point for future exploration of novel, effective search strategies in the mobile Internet era.  相似文献

Using the axon degeneration method by R. Fink and L. Heimer, organization of intrathalamic connections between various areas of the lateral hypothalamus have been studied after unisided electrolitic lesion. At any location of the injury foci, similar patterns are observed in ipsilateral distribution of degenerating fibers along the whole lateral preoptico-hypothalamic area. The most massive degeneration is observed in the zone where the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) fibers run. The degenerating fibers spread forward--into the septal area, and backward--into the mesencephalic part of the brain. The rostral and caudal parts of the lateral hypothalamus, taking part in formation of the MFB collateralies towards the thalamus, are connected with various thalamic nuclei. Massive preterminal degeneration in the perifornical zone and single argerophile granules in the medial hypothalamus convincingly demonstrate an important role of the intermediate zone for connections of its medial and lateral parts with each other. The conclusion that the intrahypothalamic connections of the lateral hypothalamus are realized within the MFB system supports the modern notion on a close connection of the lateral hypothalamus with the system of longitudinal diffuse bundles of fibers of the medial anterocerebral pathway that run through it.  相似文献

BackgroundThere has been an increasing popularity of searching health related information online in recent years. Despite that considerable amount of scoliosis patients have shown interest in obtaining scoliosis information through Internet, previous studies have demonstrated poor quality of online information. However, this conclusion may vary depending on region and culture. Since China has a restricted Internet access outside of its borders, the aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of scoliosis information available online using recognized scoring systems and to analyze the Internet as a source of health information in China.MethodsA survey-based questionnaire was distributed to 280 respondents at outpatient clinics. Information on demographics and Internet use was collected. Binary logistic analysis was performed to identify possible predictors for the use of Internet. In addition, the top 60 scoliosis related websites assessed through 4 search engines were reviewed by a surgeon and the quality of online information was evaluated using DISCERN score and JAMA benchmark.ResultsUse of the Internet as a source for scoliosis related information was confirmed in 87.8% of the respondents. College education, Internet access at home and urban residence were identified as potential predictors for Internet use. However, the quality of online scoliosis related information was poor with an average DISCERN score of 27.9±11.7 and may be misleading for scoliosis patients.ConclusionThe study outlines the profile of scoliosis patients who use the Internet as a source of health information. It was shown that 87.8% of the scoliosis patients in outpatient clinics have searched for scoliosis related information on Internet. Urban patients, higher education and Internet access at home were identified as potential predictors for Internet search. However, the overall quality of online scoliosis related information was poor and confusing. Physician based websites seemed to contain more reliable information.  相似文献

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are commonly deployed in various environments. The WLAN data packets are not transmitted continuously but often worst-case exposure of WLAN is assessed, assuming 100% activity and leading to huge overestimations. Actual duty cycles of WLAN are thus of importance for time-averaging of exposure when checking compliance with international guidelines on limiting adverse health effects. In this paper, duty cycles of WLAN using Wi-Fi technology are determined for exposure assessment on large scale at 179 locations for different environments and activities (file transfer, video streaming, audio, surfing on the internet, etc.). The median duty cycle equals 1.4% and the 95th percentile is 10.4% (standard deviation SD = 6.4%). Largest duty cycles are observed in urban and industrial environments. For actual applications, the theoretical upper limit for the WLAN duty cycle is 69.8% and 94.7% for maximum and minimum physical data rate, respectively. For lower data rates, higher duty cycles will occur. Although counterintuitive at first sight, poor WLAN connections result in higher possible exposures. File transfer at maximum data rate results in median duty cycles of 47.6% (SD = 16%), while it results in median values of 91.5% (SD = 18%) at minimum data rate. Surfing and audio streaming are less intensively using the wireless medium and therefore have median duty cycles lower than 3.2% (SD = 0.5–7.5%). For a specific example, overestimations up to a factor 8 for electric fields occur, when considering 100% activity compared to realistic duty cycles.  相似文献

A virtual server is a server whose location in an internet is virtual; it may move from one physical site to another, and it may span a dynamically changing number of physical sites. In particular, during periods of high load, it may grow to new machines, while in other times it may shrink into a single host, and may even allow other virtual servers to run on the same host. This paper describes the design and architecture of Symphony, a management infrastructure for executing virtual servers in internet settings. ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Providing remote health monitoring to specific groups of patients represents an issue of great relevance for the national health systems, because of the costs related to moving health operators, the time spent to reach remote sites, and the high number of people needing health assistance. At the same time, some assistance activities, like those related to chronical diseases, may be satisfied through a remote interaction with the patient, without a direct medical examination. METHODS: Moving from this considerations, our paper proposes a system architecture for the provisioning of remote health assistance to older adults, based on a blind management of a network of wireless medical devices, and an interactive TV Set Top Box for accessing health related data. The selection of TV as the interface between the user and the system is specifically targeted to older adults. Due to the private nature of the information exchanged, a certified procedure is implemented for data delivery, through the use of non conditional smart cards. All these functions may be accomplished through a proper design of the system management, and a suitable interactive application. RESULTS: The interactive application acting as the interface between the user and the system on the TV monitor has been evaluated able to help readability and clear understanding of the contents and functions proposed. Thanks to the limited amount of data to transfer, even a Set Top Box equipped with a traditional PSTN modem may be used to support the proposed service at a basic level; more advanced features, like audio/video connection, may be activated if the Set Top Box enables a broadband connection (e.g. ADSL). CONCLUSIONS: The proposed layered architecture for a remote health monitoring system can be tailored to address a wide range of needs, according with each patient's conditions and capabilities. The system exploits the potentialities offered by Digital Television receivers, a friendly MHP interface, and the familiar remote control, to make the service effective and easy to use also for elderly people.  相似文献

Recently, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the U.S. had initiated a global-scale competition to standardize the lightweight authenticated encryption with associated data (AEAD) and hash function. Gimli is one of the Round 2 candidates that is designed to be efficiently implemented across various platforms, including hardware (VLSI and FPGA), microprocessors, and microcontrollers. However, the performance of Gimli in massively parallel architectures like Graphics Processing Units (GPU) is still unknown. A high performance Gimli implementation on GPU can be especially useful to Internet of Things (IoT) applications, wherein the gateway devices and cloud servers need to handle a massive number of communications protected by AEAD. In this paper, we show that with careful optimization, Gimli can be efficiently implemented in desktop and embedded GPU to achieve extremely high throughput. Our experiments show that the proposed Gimli implementation can achieve 661.44 KB/s (encryption), 892.24 KB/s (decryption), and 4344.46 KB/s (hashing) in state-of-the-art GPUs.

The Internet hosts an abundance of science video resources aimed at communicating scientific knowledge, including webinars, massive open online courses, and TED talks. Although these videos are efficient at disseminating information for diverse types of users, they often do not demonstrate the process of doing science, the excitement of scientific discovery, or how new scientific knowledge is developed. iBiology (www.ibiology.org), a project that creates open-access science videos about biology research and science-related topics, seeks to fill this need by producing videos by science leaders that make their ideas, stories, and experiences available to anyone with an Internet connection.  相似文献
