Clofentezine resistance in T. urticae was first confirmed in Australia in 1987 after Queensland glasshouse roses had been exposed to 40 applications of clofentezine over a 10 month period. Clofentezine resistance in this strain was extremely high (>2.500x) and conferred high level cross-resistance to the chemically unrelated compound hexythiazox. Clofentezine resistance in T. urticae was detected in pome fruit orchards in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria in 1988 and caused field control failure after 5–6 sprays. Resistance was subsequently detected in Adelaide during 1988 and the Bathurst Orange region, NSW in 1989. Clofentezine and hexythiazox resistance appears particularly stable making it difficult to manage. This work contributes in part for the fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of PhD. at the University of Sydney.  相似文献

The ovicides clofentezine and hexythiazox have been used in Australia againstPanonychus ulmi (Koch) since 1984 and 1987, respectively. Failure of clofentezine in the field againstP. ulmi was first reported in early 1988. In 1988–89, laboratory bioassays were carried out against susceptible reference strains, and discriminating doses for clofentezine and hexythiazox established. Suspected resistant strains were tested, as were randomly collected strains.Panonychus ulmi from 23 apple orchards in eastern Australia were found to be resistant to clofentezine, and 19 of these strains were also resistant to hexythiazox. In all cases, a total of four or more ovicide sprays had been used. Of 15 samples ofP. ulmi from blocks where less than four ovicides had been used, none were resistant to either clofentezine or hexythiazox. A survey of orchards in the Orange district of New South Wales found that 30% had received four or more ovicide sprays and were likely to experience resistance problems. The control problems with clofentezine and hexythiazox means the few remaining acaricides will be subject to extreme selection pressure.  相似文献

A strain (WA) of Tetranychus urticae Koch was collected from apples in Western Australia following a reported field-control failure of tebufenpyrad. The WA strain had been exposed to five tebufenpyrad applications over four seasons. The tebufenpyrad resistance in the WA strain was confirmed at 63.29× which is the first reported instance of tebufenpyrad resistance in T. urticae. The tebufenpyrad resistance in T. urticae conferred a >210× cross-resistance to pryidaben, a 24.60× cross-resistance to fenpyroximate and a 2.20× cross-resistance to chlorfenapyr.Exp Appl Acarol 22: 633–641 © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers  相似文献

A field colony of Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae) resistant to pyridaben was selected with pyridaben successively for 20 generations to produce the PR-20 strain. Resistance and multiple resistance levels of the PR-20 strain to 15 acaricides were determined using a spray bioassay. The PR-20 strain was extremely resistant to pyridaben (resistance ratio [RR] = 240]. The strain exhibited extremely strong resistance to fenpyroximate (RR=373) and acrinathrin (RR=329) and strong resistance to benzoximate (RR=84). An RR = 10-40 was observed with abamectin, fenazaquin, fenbutatin oxide, fenpropathrin, and tebufenpyrad. The PR-20 strain showed low levels of resistance (RR <10) to azocyclotin, bromopropylate, chlorfenapyr, dicofol, milbemectin, and propargite. Synergist experiments with different metabolic inhibitors revealed that piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a mixed function oxidase (MFO) inhibitor, had the greatest effect on pyridaben resistance. PBO significantly caused pyridaben resistance in the PR-20 strain to drop to the full susceptibility level of the susceptible (S) strain. However, there was no significant difference in MFO activities measured using a model substrate between the S and PR-20 strains. These results suggest that use of certain acaricides with little multiple resistance or PBO will be useful for the management of pyridaben resistance in the field.  相似文献

Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is an important pest of clementine mandarins, Citrus reticulata Blanco, in Spain. As a first step toward the development of an integrated crop management program for clementines, dispersion patterns of T. urticae females were determined for different types of leaves and fruit. The study was carried out between 2001 and 2003 in different commercial clementine orchards in the provinces of Castelló and Tarragona (northeastern Spain). We found that symptomatic leaves (those exhibiting typical chlorotic spots) harbored 57.1% of the total mite counts. Furthermore, these leaves were representative of mite dynamics on other leaf types. Therefore, symptomatic leaves were selected as a sampling unit. Dispersion patterns generated by Taylor's power law demonstrated the occurrence of aggregated patterns of spatial distribution (b > 1.21) on both leaves and fruit. Based on these results, the incidence (proportion of infested samples) and mean density relationship were developed. We found that optimal binomial sample sizes for estimating low populations of T. urticae on leaves (up to 0.2 female per leaf) were very large. Therefore, enumerative sampling would be more reliable within this range of T. urticae densities. However, binomial sampling was the only valid method for estimating mite density on fruit.  相似文献

Sublethal effects of the growth inhibitor, clofentezine, on life-table parameters of Tetranychus urticae Koch females treated at different developmental stages with a concentration causing >90% mortality were investigated. Females which survived treatment as 'early' (0-24 h old) eggs produced 12% more offspring than the untreated females during the first five days of oviposition. This resulted in a significant rise in the intrinsic rate of increase (rj): 0.324, compared to 0.299 in the untreated females. This effect may be interpreted as hormoligosis. Clofentezine treatment at any other developmental stage of T. urticae significantly decreased both longevity and fertility of female survivors. Females which survived treatment either as 'late' (72-96 h old) eggs or larvae had 2.6 times lower net reproductive rate (R0) than the untreated females, and the rj values were significantly lower: 0.242 and 0.215, respectively (0.285 in the untreated females). Females which survived treatment either as protonymphs or deutonymphs had 3.9 times and 6 times lower R0, respectively. Corresponding rj values were 0.178 and 0.146, respectively (0.247 in the untreated females). The clofentezine treatment at all stages influenced the age distribution of survivors. The sublethal effects of clofentezine and their impact on T. urticae management are discussed.  相似文献

Resistance to clofentezine was identified in four populations of the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), from apple orchards in Ontario after ca. 5 years use. Resistance was expressed at high levels (> 2000-fold at the LC 50) to clofentezine in a population selected in the laboratory. This population was resistant to hexythiazox and to the organotin compounds cyhexatin and fenbutatin-oxide. However, a population selected with fenbutatin-oxide did not show cross resistance to clofentezine. The clofentezine-resistant population was not resistant to pyridaben, propargite or dicofol. The synergists, piperonyl butoxide and DEF, were ineffective in overcoming the resistance. Resistance to clofentezine declined rapidly in a mixed population (most resistance was lost in fewer than three generations). There were several fitness factors (fewer eggs/female, longer egg stage, longer development time for males) associated with the resistant population which may have contributed to the loss of resistant phenotypes. However, in a second test in which selection was removed from a resistant population, resistance persisted for at least 10 generations. Observations on field populations indicated that resistance persisted for at least two seasons. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In a 2-yr study of causes of mite outbreaks in apple (Malus spp.) orchards in Nova Scotia, we monitored immigration of Tetranychus urticae Koch from orchard ground cover into trees populated by the generalist phytoseiid predator Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten. In both years, T. urticae-days in the tree canopy increased with number of T. urticae caught in sticky bands on tree trunks. In 2000, T. urticae-days were negatively correlated with T. pyri-days. Lack of correlation in 2001 was attributed to higher rates of immigration, which would mask the effects of predation. Weather also affected mite dynamics. Rainfall in July and August was less in 2001 than in 2000. Heat units were sufficient for six generations of T. urticae in 2001 but only for five in 2000. Consequently, T. urticae-days in the tree canopy and immigration rates were significantly greater in 2001 than in 2000, despite three-fold greater use of miticides. We also tested the effects of herbicides on T. urticae immigration. Application of selective herbicides in laneways reduced coverage of reproductive hosts of T. urticae, but these changes did not reduce immigration. In 2001, application of a miticidal herbicide, glufosinate, in tree rows reduced captures of T. urticae on sticky bands in high immigration orchards but not in low immigration orchards. We conclude that generalist predators and modified herbicide use are insufficient remedies and that effective biological control of T. urticae in the ground cover by a specialist phytoseiid such as Amblyseius fallacis Garman is essential to prevent outbreaks.  相似文献

The acaricides clofentezine, hexythiazox and etoxazole are commonly referred to as ‘mite growth inhibitors’, and clofentezine and hexythiazox have been used successfully for the integrated control of plant mite pests for decades. Although they are still important today, their mode of action has remained elusive. Recently, a mutation in chitin synthase 1 (CHS1) was linked to etoxazole resistance. In this study, we identified and investigated a Tetranychus urticae strain (HexR) harboring recessive, monogenic resistance to each of hexythiazox, clofentezine, and etoxazole. To elucidate if there is a common genetic basis for the observed cross-resistance, we adapted a previously developed bulk segregant analysis method to map with high resolution a single, shared resistance locus for all three compounds. This finding indicates that the underlying molecular basis for resistance to all three compounds is identical. This locus is centered on the CHS1 gene, and as supported by additional genetic and biochemical studies, a non-synonymous variant (I1017F) in CHS1 associates with resistance to each of the tested acaricides in HexR. Our findings thus demonstrate a shared molecular mode of action for the chemically diverse mite growth inhibitors clofentezine, hexythiazox and etoxazole as inhibitors of an essential, non-catalytic activity of CHS1. Given the previously documented cross-resistance between clofentezine, hexythiazox and the benzyolphenylurea (BPU) compounds flufenoxuron and cycloxuron, CHS1 should be also considered as a potential target-site of insecticidal BPUs.  相似文献

A Potter spray tower was used to determine the susceptibility of adult female European red mites (Panonychus ulmi (Koch)) and two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch) to suffocation by petroleum spray oils (PSOs). The LC95 values calculated for P. ulmi against C23 Ampol D-C-Tron NR and C21 Caltex Lovis were 104 and 165 g cm-2, respectively. For T. urticae the values were 169 and 207 g cm-2, respectively. The results are consistent with established relationships between PSO efficacy and increasing PSO molecular weight. The results are discussed in relation to previously reported bioassays on spider mites and to concurrent evaluations of PSOs for use in pome fruit integrated pest management programmes in Australia.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance of the spider mites Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. ludeni Zacher was studied on commercial strawberry farms near Sydney, New South Wales between 1978–1981. T. urticae was the dominant species with T. ludeni assuming a minor role. T. urticae usually first appeared each year in May-June, with populations developing through winter and increasing to, and sometimes exceeding, the economic threshold level in spring-summer. In early January, populations were low or absent. In winter, temperature was not an impediment to pest population increase and adult females remained in a non-diapausing phase. Miticide sprays gave variable control of T. urticae outbreaks, probably due to the difficulties of applying the spray to the underside of leaves and widespread resistance within pest populations. The predator Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, where it occurred, survived under most conditions and was an important factor in controlling T. urticae infestations. Another predator, Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha, occurred infrequently and at low numbers and contributed little to control.  相似文献

Chemical, biological and integrated programmes for the control of two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, were compared on dwarf hops in 1997 and 1998. In both years integrated control, which consisted of an application of the ovicidal acaricide clofentezine followed by a release of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis at 10 individuals per plant, was the most effective treatment. Similar numbers of spider mites were recorded on plots that were treated with P. persimilis only or with a single application of the acaricide tebufenpyrad, and plots with either of these treatments had higher levels of infestation than the plots under integrated control. The highest numbers of spider mites were found on the untreated plots. This study indicates that integrated control of T. urticae using clofentezine in conjunction with P. persimilis is likely to be more effective than an approach based on chemical or biological measures only. It is suggested that an integrated system would have the added benefit over a pesticide-only programme of reducing pressure on the pest for the selection of strains resistant to acaricides.  相似文献

Abstract This study evaluates the toxicological and biochemical response of two‐spotted spider mites to clofentezine selection pressure. The mortality rate of Tetranychus urticae in adult females depends on increased clofentezine concentration and clofentezine was found to be effective against females. The resistance rate of the CUM strain selected 12 times once per generation with clofentezine was increased from 1.28‐ to 105.27‐fold. The interaction of some synergists with clofentezine was analyzed in the clofentezine‐resistant CLOF 12 strain. Synergists had no effect on clofentezine toxicity. The clofentezine‐resistant CLOF 12 strain showed resistance against chlorpyrifos, abamectin, propargite, fenpyroximate and amitraz. The modes of inheritance of resistance to clofentezine were found to be incompletely dominant and not sex‐linked. Esterase enzyme activity was detected both by gel electrophoresis and microplate reader methods, while glutathione S‐transferase (GST) and monooxygenase (P450) activity were detected only by the microplate reader method. During the selection period the esterase, the GST and the P450 enzymes activities were raised from 7.69, 7.09 and 0.003 3 to 18.40, 13.11 and 0.003 7 milli‐optical density/min/mg proteins, respectively. An increase was observed in the band intensity of esterases and esterase enzymes may play a role in clofentezine resistance in T. urticae.  相似文献

Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial DNA control region was used to clarify the taxonomic status of two coastal bottlenose dolphin populations from southeastern Australia currently classified as Tursiops truncatus . A 368-bp segment of the control region of 57 biopsy-sampled, photo-identified dolphins of Jervis Bay and Port Stephens was compared to published sequences of T. truncatus and T. aduncus from different oceanic regions. Sequence divergence between haplotypes from southeastern Australia and T. aduncus was much lower than that from T. truncatus . Analyses using two different methods of phylogenetic reconstruction unambiguously placed all haplotypes from southeastern Australia in a group composed exclusively of T. aduncus . The results strongly indicated that these two bottlenose dolphin populations belong to T. aduncus , extending the range of the species to subtropical waters of the Western South Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Forty isolates of entomopathogenic fungi from six genera were assessed against the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in a single dose, direct application laboratory bioassay on tomato leaflets. Only three isolates caused greater mortality than the control: these were Metarhizium anisopliae 442.99, Hirsutella spp. 457.99, and Verticillium lecanii 450.99. These isolates were assessed in a multiple dose bioassay, together with three isolates cultured from commercial biopesticides as follows: Beauveria bassiana 432.99 (cultured from 'Naturalis-L', Troy Biosciences, Phoenix, TX, USA); Hirsutella thompsonii 463.99 (cultured from 'Mycar', Abbott Laboratories USA); and V. lecanii 19.79 (used in 'Mycotal' Koppert BV, The Netherlands). Beauveria bassiana 432.99, H. thompsonii 463.99, M. anisopliae 442.99, and V. lecanii 450.99 were all pathogenic to T. urticae in this bioassay. In addition, it was found that the mortality caused by B. bassiana 432.99 and Naturalis-L was increased when the mites were exposed to tomato leaflets sprayed previously with conidia suspensions, compared to spraying the mites directly. In a glasshouse experiment, sprays of B. bassiana 432.99, H. thompsonii 463.99, M. anisopliae 442.99, V. lecanii 450.99 and Naturalis-L reduced T. urticae populations in a tomato crop grown according to commercial practice. Naturalis-L reduced T. urticae numbers by up to 97%. In a second glasshouse experiment, single sprays of Naturalis-L and the acaricide fenbutatin oxide (Torq) were compared as supplementary treatments to release of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis. Supplementary sprays of fenbutatin oxide reduced the numbers of T. urticae nymphs (80% reduction), while Naturalis-L reduced numbers of T. urticae adults, nymphs and eggs (98% reduction in all three cases). It is concluded that Naturalis-L has the potential to be used against T. urticae on glasshouse tomato crops.  相似文献

Bifenazate is a novel carbazate acaricide discovered by Uniroyal Chemical (now Chemtura Corporation) for the control of phytophagous mites infesting agricultural and ornamental crops. Its acaricidal activity and that of its principal active metabolite, diazene, were characterized. Bifenazate and diazene had high toxicity and specificity both orally and topically to all life stages of Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus citri. Acute poisoning was observed with no temperature dependency. No cross-resistance was found to mites resistant to several other classes of acaricides, such as tebufenpyrad, etoxazole, fenbutatin oxide and dicofol. Bifenazate remained effective for a long time with only about a 10% loss of efficacy on T. urticae after 1 month of application in the field. All stages of development of the predatory mites, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus, survived treatment by both bifenazate and diazene. When adult females of the two predatory mite species were treated with either bifenazate or diazene, they showed a normal level of fecundity and predatory activity in the laboratory, effectively suppressing spider mite population growth. Even when the predators were fed spider mite eggs that had been treated previously with bifenazate, they survived. These findings indicate that bifenazate is a very useful acaricide giving high efficacy, long-lasting activity and excellent selectivity for spider mites. It is, therefore, concluded that bifenazate is an ideal compound for controlling these pest mites.  相似文献

Resistance of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, to acaricides acting as mitochondrial electron transport inhibitors (METIs) is an increasing problem. Because of their high levels of cross-resistance to all commercially available METI-acaricides, a Japanese strain (AKITA) and an English strain (UK-99) of T. urticae were investigated in detail. Larvae of both strains, AKITA and UK-99, showed 1,100- and 480-fold resistance against pyridaben, 870- and 45-fold resistance against fenpyroximate, and 33- and 44-fold resistance against tebufenpyrad, respectively, in a foliar spray application bioassay compared with the susceptible strain GSS. These resistance factors remained stable even when maintained in the laboratory without further selection. Furthermore, strain AKITA showed cross-resistance to dicofol. The METI resistant strains AKITA and UK-99 showed 2.4- and 1.7-fold enhanced O-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation (cytochrome P450) activity. Increased oxidative metabolism of the METI-acaricides in the resistant strains could be partially suppressed in vivo by the monooxygenase-inhibitor piperonyl butoxide. Reciprocal crosses of homozygous, diploid females and hemizygous, haploid males of strains GSS (susceptible) and AKITA (resistant) revealed that resistance to pyridaben and fenpyroximate was inherited incompletely dominant with slight differences between maternal and paternal inheritance. This is the first attempt to mechanistically describe METI-acaricide resistance in T. urticae. The implications for resistance management strategies are discussed.  相似文献

The phenology of overwintered Tetranychus urticae was studied on the ground cover in apple orchards in the early season, and an oviposition model of overwintered adults was developed. The movement of overwintered adults from trees to ground cover started from mid-March and continued until mid-April. One life cycle from eggs to new adults (the 1st generation adults) on the ground cover was from late March to early May. The longevity and fecundity of overwintered T. urticae were affected largely by temperature. The longevity ranged from 46.6 days at 10 degrees C to 6.5 days at 35 degrees C. The total fecundity was minimum (0.2 eggs) at 10 degrees C and maximum (45.5 eggs) at 25 degrees C. The relationship between total fecundity and temperature was described well by a nonlinear equation. The cumulative age-specific oviposition rate was described well by the two-parameter Weibull function. The overall adult survival exhibited a reverse logistic curve. Three temperature-dependent components, age-specific cumulative oviposition rate, temperature-dependent total fecundity and age-specific survival rate functions, were incorporated into an oviposition model. The oviposition model simulation described the occurrence pattern of eggs laid by overwintered T. urticae on the ground cover in apple orchards relatively well.  相似文献

Areawide mating disruption treatments have been effective in controlling infestation of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in Australian pome and stone fruit orchards. Although successful, the areawide mating disruption program has been an expensive approach by using hand-applied Isomate dispensers. Sprayable microencapsulated (MEC) pheromone formulations that can be applied with standard spray equipment could substantially reduce the cost of application. Field trials conducted during two consecutive seasons (2002-2004) demonstrated that monthly applications of MEC-OFM phase V (3M Canada, London, Ontario, Canada) at a rate of 125 ml/ha (37.1 g [AI]/ha) in replicated 2-ha blocks of both peaches and pears reduced oriental fruit moth shoot tip and fruit damage as effectively as a single application of Isomate OFM Rosso hand-applied dispensers (500 dispensers per ha) and as or more effectively than standard broad-spectrum insecticide sprays. Fruit protection was achieved despite high oriental fruit moth population densities in both crops as measured by moth catches in terpinyl acetate food and pheromone traps. Similar numbers of oriental fruit moths were captured among all treatments in food traps but captures of males in pheromone traps were disrupted (96-99%) in pheromone-treated blocks relative to controls. The results of this study suggest that microencapsulated formulations of pheromone could be effectively used in areawide mating disruption programs for oriental fruit moth in Australia as a cost-saving alternative to reservoir-style dispensers requiring labor-intensive hand application.  相似文献

Seasonal history studies and a pesticide disruption trial showed that the Australian phytoseiidAmblyseius victoriensis (Womersley) was a very effective predator of the native eriophyidTegolophus australis Keifer, in commercial citrus orchards at Gayndah and Mundubbera, Queensland, from 1984 to 1990.Amblyseius victoriensis numbers rose from 10–20 per 100 leaves in spring to 100 or more per 100 leaves in mid summer, keeping the percentage ofT. australis-infested, fruit well below an economic threshold of 10%.However, in the same orchards,A. victoriensis only controlled the cosmopolitan eriophyidPhyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead), when less than 5% of the fruit was infested with the pest and predator numbers exceeded 40 per 100 leaves.Aspects of orchard management influencing populations ofA. victoriensis, were evaluated. The pesticides benomyl, dicofol, mancozeb, methidathion, and mezineb reduced populations by 100%, methomyl by 89%, chlorpyrifos by 80%, fenbutatin oxide by 42.5% and endosulfan by 27.5%. Iprodione and hydrated lime caused a 17% reduction, but copper oxychloride and narrow-range oil had little effect. Encouragement of alternative host plants in the orchard increased populations ofA. victoriensis. Where Rhodes grass.Chloris gayana Kunth, was allowed to flower in the inter-rows, its windblown pollen served as a supplementary food source. Windbreak rows ofEucalyptus torelliana F. Muell. acted as reservoirs ofA. victoriensis for nearby blocks of citrus. Augmentative release was effective for re-establishingA. victoriensis where it was absent following pesticide suppression.  相似文献
