The occurrence of Chara connivens (Charophyta, Characeae) and its status in the Baltic Sea may raise controversies regarding its origin and historical dispersal pathways in the area. This study critically revises the protection status of C. connivens in the countries around the Baltic Sea, as well as its status on the red lists of endangered plant species (including the HELCOM Red List). The first reports on the presence of C. connivens in the Baltic Sea area were published in the aftermath of Carl Baenitz’s talks given in the early 1870s. Already then, the scientific community was well aware of the fact that C. connivens had been introduced as a ballast plant to the known Baltic areas of occurrence – the first known record of the species is from 1829. Since Poland is the only country where C. connivens is protected, the historical and contemporary distribution of this charophyte in the Polish coastal waters is presented against the background of the available historical and recent records of the species in the Baltic Sea. Recent reports from the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century have confirmed a fairly common occurrence of C. connivens in Estonia, Sweden and Poland. This species still occurs on the German coast and has also been reported from Finland (the Åland archipelago). In recent decades, however, the species was considered rare in the Baltic Sea area. In Poland, C. connivens was even classified as extinct, despite earlier data on its occurrence in the Vistula Lagoon in the 1970s, where it was rediscovered in 2011. It was also found in the Szczecin Lagoon a year later. Both localities well suit Luther’s pattern of C. connivens occurrence in areas with intensive shipping and ballast discharge operations in historical times. Based on this in-depth revision of historical and current distribution, it is postulated that C. connivens, as non-indigenous, should not be red-listed in the Baltic Sea area, following the example of Finland. Moreover, its legal status in Poland of a strictly protected species should be reconsidered.  相似文献

Sequence analyses on the intron from the elongation factor-1α gene were conducted to examine the population structure and historical demography of whiskered velvet shrimp (Metapenaeopsis barbata) off China and Taiwan. Five samples including 155 individuals were separately collected from the north of East China Sea (ECS), waters off Taichung (TC), Cheding (CD), Xiamen (XM) and Hongkong (HK) and 41 alleles were identified. All FST values between five samples were significant except the pair of TC-CD. Neighbor-joining tree and network of 41 alleles showed no significant genealogical structure. UPGMA tree of five sampling areas showed three distinct groups. One included the NECS; another contained TC and CD; the other included HK and XM. Both Tajima’s D and Fu’s F statistics and analysis of mismatch distribution for overall alleles suggested that this species in studied areas had experienced population expansion.  相似文献

Timothy Lenoir launched the historical study of German life science at the end of the 18th century with the claim that J. F. Blumenbach’s approach was shaped by his reception of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant: a ‘teleomechanism’ that adopted a strictly ‘regulative’ approach to the character of organisms. It now appears that Lenoir was wrong about Blumenbach’s understanding of Kant, for Blumenbach’s Bildungstrieb entailed an actual empirical claim. Moreover, he had worked out the decisive contours of his theory and he had exerted his maximal influence on the so-called ‘Göttingen School’ before 1795, when Lenoir posits the main influence of Kant’s thought took hold. This has crucial significance for the historical reconstruction of the German life sciences in the period. The Lenoir thesis can no longer serve as the point of departure for that reconstruction.  相似文献

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease whose relevance is increasing in industrialized society. Recent genome wide association studies revealed over seventy one loci associated with disease penetrance. Several variants that increase disease risk encode for altered proteins that diminish bacterial host defense. NOD2 alters intracellular bacterial sensing while ATG16L1 is thought to diminish bacterial clearance by impairing autophagy. Additionally, changes in the IBD5 locus are thought to diminish barrier function. Alternatively, recent data indicate a gain of function genetic variant of IL23R is protective amongst European CD patients. These recent genetic discoveries contradict historical theories that Crohn’s disease results from overactive auto-aggressive responses. Rather, new genetic data suggest disease-associated variants encode for dysfunctional proteins that diminish essential innate immune responses against commensal organisms. This review provides an overview of these critical discoveries and places them in their biological context.  相似文献

In the early eighteenth century, chemistry became the main academic locus where, in Francis Bacon’s words, Experimenta lucifera were performed alongside Experimenta fructifera and where natural philosophy was coupled with natural history and ‘experimental history’ in the Baconian and Boyleian sense of an inventory and exploration of the extant operations of the arts and crafts. The Dutch social and political system and the institutional setting of the university of Leiden endorsed this empiricist, utilitarian orientation toward the sciences, which was forcefully propagated by one of the university’s most famous representatives in the first half of the eighteenth century, the professor of medicine, botany and chemistry Herman Boerhaave. Recent historical investigations on Boerhaave’s chemistry have provided important insights into Boerhaave’s religious background, his theoretical and philosophical goals, and his pedagogical agenda. But comparatively little attention has been paid to the chemical experiments presented in Boerhaave’s famous chemical textbook, the Elementa chemiae, and to the question of how these experiments relate not only to experimental philosophy but also to experimental history and natural history, and to contemporary utilitarianism. I argue in this essay that Boerhaave shared a strong commitment to Baconian utilitarianism and empiricism with many other European chemists around the middle of the eighteenth century, in particular to what Bacon designated ‘experimental history’ and I will provide evidence for this claim through a careful analysis of Boerhaave’s plant-chemical experiments presented in the Elementa chemiae.  相似文献

Having unique, complex eyes and vision based on exceptional spatial acuity, salticid spiders are known for their vision-based predatory and mating strategies. Yet Evarcha culicivora, the salticid we consider here, is known for predatory and mating strategies based strongly on the interplay of vision and olfaction. This unusual East African species feeds indirectly on vertebrate blood by choosing blood-carrying female mosquitoes as preferred prey, which it can identify by sight and by smell. Moreover, E. culicivora’s mating strategy is unusual because, unlike the prevailing general pattern among spiders, where males are more active in courtship and females are more active in mate choice, both roles are characteristic of both sexes of E. culicivora. There is also an unusual relationship between diet and mating in this species, with blood meals making both sexes more attractive as potential mates. However, findings from the present study demonstrate that, regardless of source-spider diet and even when restricted to using chemoreception in the absence of seeing another spider, both sexes can discriminate between opposite-sex conspecifics and opposite-sex heterospecifics. Yet there is no evidence that diet (blood versus no blood) influences the attractiveness of opposite-sex heterospecific individuals to E. culicivora. Evidence that the odor of opposite-sex conspecifics is salient to E. culicivora comes from three different experimental designs (retention testing, choice testing and courtship-initiation testing). The effective odor source can be either the presence of the spider or the presence of the spider’s draglines alone.  相似文献

We investigated possible correlations between climate-related factors and butterfly range restrictions by selecting a study case represented by four populations of Melitaea britomartis, which become ‘simultaneously’ extinct in NW Italy in 1976–1977 without any observable habitat change. To overcome difficulties related to the analysis of past extinctions and hypothesise causal factors, we applied the Optimal Interpolation method, a statistical method used to create a gridded climatological analysis of temperature and precipitation data, to a historical dataset containing all available information on the Italian butterfly fauna. We tested two different hypotheses: (1) the role of climate change, expressed as a general trend in temperature and precipitation data; (2) the role of extreme weather events, expressed as anomalous conditions during the years of extinctions. Our results show that long-term temperature and precipitation data do not present any clear trend at our study site, suggesting that they cannot be involved in the species’ extinction. On the opposite, 1976 and 1977 were climatologically critical for the study area. In particular, 1977 was characterized by the coldest summer in the entire historical dataset (1958–1977), with strong negative temperature anomalies. Moreover, both years experienced unusually many rainy days during spring and summer. The year 1977 in particular, was the wettest within the entire historical dataset. The years of M. britomartis populations’ extinction were characterised by many more cold and rainy days than usual during the species’ flight period. These results allow us to hypothesize a strong component of unfavourable weather in driving populations’ extinction.  相似文献

Blood platelets have been widely proposed as biomarkers in studies of mitochondrial function and aging-related and neurodegenerative diseases. Defects in mitochondrial function were found not only in the substantia nigra of Parkinson’s disease patients but also in their blood platelets. Similarly, it has also been described in the blood platelet mitochondria of Alzheimer’s disease patients. To study mitochondrial aerobic metabolism function and protein expression in platelets of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and control subjects, mitochondrial aconitase, mitochondrial superoxide dismutases 1 and 2 (SOD1 and SOD2), and respiratory complex enzyme activities in platelets of MS patients and control subjects were determined. Likewise, mitochondrial lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial SOD1 and cytochrome c expressions were investigated. Mitochondrial aconitase activity was higher in MS patients than in controls (P?<?0.05). A significant increase on all respiratory complex activities in MS patients was observed (P?<?0.05). Mitochondrial lipid peroxidation was significantly higher in MS patients than in controls (P?<?0.05). Significant changes of cytochrome c and mitochondrial SOD1 expressions were detected (P?<?0.05), with a decrease of 44?±?5 % and an increase of 46?±?6 %, respectively. Our study reveals that significant changes in mitochondrial aerobic metabolism function and mitochondrial SOD1 and cytochrome c expressions are produced in platelets of MS patients.  相似文献

A pair of mutations at different loci (or sites) which are singly deleterious but restore normal fitness in combination may be called compensatory neutral mutations. Population dynamics concerning evolutionary substitutions of such mutants was developed by making use of the diffusion equation method. Based on this theory and, also, by the help of Monte Carlo simulation experiments, a remarkable phenomenon was disclosed that the double mutants can easily become fixed in the population by random drift under continued mutation pressure if the loci arc tightly linked, even when the single mutants are definitely deleterious. More specifically, I consider two loci with allelesA andA’ in the first locus, and allelesB andB’in the second locus, and assign relative fitnesses 1, 1-s’, 1-s’ and 1 respectively to the four gene combinationsAB, A’B, AB’ andA’B’, wheres’ is the selection coefficient against the single mutants (s’ > 0). Letv be the mutation rate per locus per generation and assume that mutation occurs irreversibly fromA toA’ at the first locus, and fromB toB’ at the second locus, whereA andB are wild type genes, andA’ andB’ are their mutant alleles. In a diploid population of effective size N e (or a haploid population of 2N e breeding individuals), it was shown that the average time (T) until joint fixation of the double mutant (A’B’) starting from the state in which the population consists exclusively of the wild type genes (AB) is not excessively long even for large 4N e s’ values. In fact, assuming2N e v = 1 we have -T = 54Ne for 4Nes’ = 400, and -T = 128Ne for 4N e s’ = 1000. These values are not unrealistically long as compared with -T~ 5N e obtained for 4N e s’ = 0. The approximate analytical treatment has also been extended to estimate the effect of low rate crossing over in retarding fixation. The bearing of these findings on molecular evolution is discussed with special reference to coupled substitutions at interacting amino acid (or nucleotide) sites within a folded protein (orrna) molecule. It is concluded that compensatory neutral mutants may play an important role in molecular evolution.  相似文献

In this article I assess Georges Canguilhem’s historical epistemology with both theoretical and historical questions in mind. From a theoretical point of view, I am concerned with the relation between history and philosophy, and in particular with the philosophical assumptions and external norms that are involved in history writing. Moreover, I am concerned with the role that history can play in the understanding and evaluation of philosophical concepts. From a historical point of view, I regard historical epistemology, as developed by Gaston Bachelard and Georges Canguilhem, as a conception and practice which came out of the project, elaborated in France from the 1920s to the 1940s, of combining history of science and philosophy. I analyse in particular Canguilhem’s epistemology in his theory and practice of history of science. What he called ‘normative history’ is the focus of my analysis. I evaluate the question of the nature and provenience of the norm employed in normative history, and I compare it with the norm as discussed by Canguilhem in Le normal et le pathologique. While I am critical of Canguilhem’s treatment of history, I conclude that his philosophical suggestion to analyse the formation of scientific concepts ‘from below’ represents a useful model for history and philosophy of science, and that it can be very profitably extended to philosophical concepts.  相似文献

ObjectiveX-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenital (AHC) is a rare disorder caused by mutations in DAX1 gene. We report a case of X-linked AHC in a large family to analyze the pathogenesis of this rare disease and to add to our clinical knowledge of it.MethodsWe describe 3-year-old boy’s clinical features and laboratory test results, as well as the patient’s nuclear family members’ clinical symptoms, especially those with features of adrenal insufficiency. Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted from the patient’s and the family members’ peripheral blood leukocytes, and the coding region and promoter region of DAX1 were directly sequenced.ResultsA 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with X-linked AHC presented with atypical symptoms, and his laboratory test results revealed elevated serum adrenocorticotropic hormone levels (ACTH) and decreased serum cortisol levels. Three novel mutations were detected in the DAX1 coding sequence in this family: a missense mutation (c.376G>A, p.Val126Met), a synonymous mutation (c.498G>A, p.Arg166Arg), and a nonsense mutation (c.1225C>T, p.Gln409X).ConclusionsThis report describes the familial transmission of AHC over several generations and further expands the number of DAX1 mutations reported in the literature. Cholesterol depletion by methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) remodels the plasma membrane’s mechanics in cells and its interactions with the underlying cytoskeleton, whereas in red blood cells, it is also known to cause lysis. Currently it’s unclear if MβCD alters membrane tension or only enhances membrane-cytoskeleton interactions—and how this relates to cell lysis. We map membrane height fluctuations in single cells and observe that MβCD reduces temporal fluctuations robustly but flattens spatial membrane undulations only slightly. Utilizing models explicitly incorporating membrane confinement besides other viscoelastic factors, we estimate membrane mechanical parameters from the fluctuations’ frequency spectrum. This helps us conclude that MβCD enhances membrane tension and does so even on ATP-depleted cell membranes where this occurs despite reduction in confinement. Additionally, on cholesterol depletion, cell membranes display higher intracellular heterogeneity in the amplitude of spatial undulations and membrane tension. MβCD also has a strong impact on the cell membrane’s tenacity to mechanical stress, making cells strongly prone to rupture on hypo-osmotic shock with larger rupture diameters—an effect not hindered by actomyosin perturbations. Our study thus demonstrates that cholesterol depletion increases membrane tension and its variability, making cells prone to rupture independent of the cytoskeletal state of the cell.  相似文献

Pseudocleonus (Phryganocleonus) kratkyi sp. n. is described from Afghanistan. Some remarks on the taxonomy of the subgenus Phryganocleonus are given, with a key to the species. Lectotypes of Pseudocleonus guldarensis Arnol’di, Ps. iskanderi Arnol’di, and Ps. tadzhika Arnol’di are designated. Hypotheses on the historical biogeographical events that may have caused species differentiation are proposed.  相似文献

Sphaeria pilosa, the basionym of the type of Trichosphaeria, T. pilosa, was insufficiently described by Persoon. The current interpretation of T. pilosa comes from Fuckel and is based on his own material published in the exsiccatal series Fungi Rhen. Exs. no. 946. The examination of the type and other authentic material of S. pilosa and T. pilosa revealed several different fungi. Fresh material of T. pilosa is not available and Fuckel’s historical specimens have never been sampled for DNA. In order to reconcile Persoon’s concept of S. pilosa with Fuckel’s concept of T. pilosa, we designate a neotype in our study. The species is a unitunicate ascomycete characterized by perithecial ascomata, persistent paraphyses, and cylindrical short-stipitate asci without visible apical annulus containing eight hyaline, ellipsoidal ascospores. The genus Trichosphaeria includes 87 described species and the Trichosphaeriales with the single family Trichosphaeriaceae recently accommodate 17 genera of apparently diverse phylogenetic affinity. Although the relationship of Trichosphaeria with other members of the Sordariomycetes is unknown, the family and order based on it are widely used to label incertae sedis clades inferred in phylogenetic analyses. Based on these findings, the Trichosphaeriales are re-evaluated and their use in phylogenetic studies is recommended to be abandoned until recognition of T. pilosa by molecular data.  相似文献

The abundance of butternut (Juglans cinerea L.) trees has severely declined rangewide over the past 50 years. An important factor in the decline is butternut canker, a disease caused by the fungus Ophiognomonia clavigigenti-juglandacearum, which has left the remaining butternuts isolated and sparsely distributed. To manage the remaining populations effectively, information regarding how butternut’s population genetic structure is affected by environmental and historical factors is needed. In this study, we assessed genetic structure and diversity of 161 butternut trees from 19 adjacent watersheds in the southern portion of butternut’s range using 12 microsatellite markers. We assessed the genetic diversity and genetic differentiation among trees grouped at various spatial scales. Our goal was to use historical abundance and land use data for these watersheds, which are now all a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), to understand the ecological and evolutionary forces that challenge the conservation and management of butternut. In general, butternuts within the 19 neighboring watersheds were all part of one continuous population, with gene flow throughout. Significant genetic differentiation was detected between some groups of trees, but the differentiation was quite small and may not represent an ecologically significant distinction. The mean heterozygosity in all watersheds remained high, despite extensive mortality. Overall, genetic diversity and rare alleles were evenly distributed across all watersheds, with some variability in subpopulations containing butternut-Japanese walnut hybrids (Juglans x bixbyi or buarts). These results indicate that management of this species should focus on protection from future hybridization with Japanese walnut, promotion of regeneration, and persistence of all remaining butternut trees, which still retain high levels of genetic diversity.  相似文献

The influence of Streptococcus phocae PI80 on the shelf life of Sardinella longiceps and Penaeus monodon was investigated by measurement of microbial and chemical analysis after appraising the safety of the protective probiotic culture in wistar rat’s model. The results of this safety assessment indicate that oral administration of protective culture does not demonstrate any toxicological effects. Consumption of this LAB strain had no adverse effects on animal’s general health status, hematology, blood biochemistry, histology parameters, or on the incidence of bacterial translocation. The effect of Streptococcus phocae is very evident with the reduction of Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahemolyticus, and coliforms. During storage, a marked decline in total volatile base and peroxide value was observed in protective culture-treated samples than the control. This strain looks promising as a protective culture for the preservation of fish products.  相似文献
