The foraging behavior ofVenturia canescens, a solitary endoparasitoid of lepidopteran larvae, was investigated in the laboratory. FemaleVenturia canescens with a larger number of mature eggs to lay were found to have higher levels of superparasitism (measured as numbers of eggs laid per parasitized host). Increased parasitoid density was found to result in reduced levels of superparasitism by host-deprived (i.e.,undepleted) wasps. Females which had been allowed access to hosts before the experiment (depleted wasps) laid fewer eggs per parasitized host than undepleted wasps, although there was no significant difference in the levels of superparasitism among the depletion periods of 1, 2, 5, and 7 h. It was also found that an egg which was encountered less than 15 min after oviposition was much less likely to be avoided than one which was encountered after more than 15 min had elapsed.  相似文献

Females of the yellow swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus, were reared in the laboratory. They were divided into four groups held under different mating conditions: nonmating (virgin) and mated once, twice, and three times. The number of eggs in the ovaries was counted by dissection. Virgin females produced increasing numbers of mature eggs, up to about 30, in the week following emergence. When the female had mated once, the number of mature eggs was significantly higher than that of virgin females by the second day after emergence. However, the double- and triplemated females did not increase the number of eggs in each state further than the singlemated females. The double-mated females deposited significantly more eggs than the singlemated females in the laboratory. The triplemated females also deposited more eggs on the day after the third mating than the doublemated females. Thus, multiple matings increased the number of eggs deposited. The change in the hatchability and the morphology of the spermatophore in the bursa copulatrix suggested that the sperm from the last mating had precedence.  相似文献

At eclosion, the ovaries of female Corn earworm Heliothis zea do not contain mature eggs. Virgin-unfed females produced approximately 400 mature eggs in 8 days; mating or feeding doubled this number, and mating plus feeding more than tripled it. Females allatectomized or decapitated at day O matured few eggs. Egg production was restored by implantation of active corpora allata (CA) or by treatment with the juvenile hormone (JH) analogue methoprene at day 0. 20-Hydroxyecdysone, on the other hand, had no effect. Females in which the CA had been denervated or in which the median neurosecretory cells of the brain had been ablated at day O produced fewer eggs than sham-operated animals. These results indicate that egg maturation is controlled by JH and that continuous input from the brain is required for sustained CA activity for maintaining a high rates of egg maturation. The rate of JH biosynthesis by CA in vitro was determined with a radiochemical assay. The major hormones produced were JH-II and JH-III with small quantities of JH-I. The rates of JH synthesis were similar in all experimental groups which may indicate that the in vitro rate of JH synthesis does not reflect the actual state of CA activity in the female.  相似文献

Pachycrepoideus vindemiae Rondani (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) is a facultative hyperparasitoid ofDrosophila parasitoids in Europe. FemaleP. vindemiae host-feed from the same hosts into which they lay eggs and this enables them to mature additional eggs.P. vindemiae females were allowed to host-feed from puparia containingDrosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) pupae or pupae ofAsobara tabida Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Wasps which had host-fed carried significantly more eggs; the species of host which was fed from had no significant effect on the number of mature eggs in the ovaries. Host-feeding caused no significant reduction in the size of the emerging offspring.P. vindemiae were allowed to forage over patches containing different frequencies of the two host species. No significant oviposition preference was found but there were marked host-feeding preferences which were affected by the age of the host pupae. It is suggested that these preferences were due to the physical nature of the hosts which were fed from.  相似文献

The foraging behavior ofVenturia canescens, a solitary endoparasitoid of lepidopteran larvae, was investigated in the laboratory. Females with a greater number of mature eggs in their ovarioles and oviducts parasitized a greater number of hosts and won a greater proportion of encounters with other searching females. Wasps which had been exposed to hosts prior to an experimental trial lost a higher proportion ofagonistic encounters with conspecifics than wasps which had no prior exposure to hosts. The behavior of a wasp at the time of the encounter influenced the outcome of the encounter. Wasps involved in active search of the host medium with the ovipositor (probing) were more likely to win encounters than wasps in any other behavioral category. In a situation where the agonistic encounter was between two probing wasps, both contestants were equally likely to win. Results are discussed in the light of the idea that mutual interference arises, in this species, as a result of agonistic encounters between searching females and recent dynamic-programming models which suggest that parasitoid oviposition should be influenced by mature egg load.  相似文献

We examined longevity, fecundity, and oviposition strategies ofEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky (Diptera: Tachinidae), a gregarious endoparasitoid ofHelicoverpa zea (Boddie) andHeliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Longevity of adult femaleE. bryani was not related to body size. In contrast to longevity, largerE. bryani females had greater potential fecundity than smaller females, as determined by the number of embryonated eggs present in the common oviduct. However, female parasitoid size did not affect primary clutch size (number of eggs deposited in a host). Because embryos in eggs located in the ovisac were larger than those located elsewhere in the common oviduct, maximum primary clutch size may be physiologically limited by the number of fully mature eggs a female has available at one time.E. bryani females adjusted primary clutch size in response to host size, for bothH. zea andH. virescens. This adjustment appears to be adaptive because females did not overexploit hosts by depositing more larvae than a host could support. Adult emergence was not related to host size. Although host weight positively influencedE. bryani progeny weight, increases in progeny size with host size were counterbalanced by increases in primary clutch size with host size.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the impact of feeding status and maternal age on egg load of Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a solitary, koinobiont endoparasitoid of noctuid pests. Egg load was defined as the number of mature (i.e., fully-chorionated) eggs found in the ovaries and oviducts. Significantly more mature eggs were stored in honey-fed than starved females. For honey-fed females, egg load increased within several days of isolation from hosts. This study suggests that C. marginiventris is weakly synovigenic because females emerge with a considerable number of mature eggs and are capable of maturing many more eggs. Feeding on a suitable source of carbohydrate should increase the egg load (i.e., potential fecundity) of this insect within 3–4 days in an in vivo rearing system.  相似文献

Oviposition decisions and their fitness consequences for the seed parasite Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were investigated. Female S. oryzae lay eggs inside seeds such as wheat [Triticum aestivum (L.)]. Because larvae develop to adult within a single seed, the resources available are determined by the behavior of the female parent and characteristics of the seed in which the egg was deposited. Females were demonstrated to lay more eggs in kernels 20 mg. Females initiated the chewing of oviposition holes in shriveled kernels but were less likely to oviposit in them. Progeny size increased with increasing seed size, but the probability of an adult emerging was not affected. Females accepted large kernels more quickly than small kernels and this contributed to increased oviposition in large kernels. The increase in the number of eggs per kernel appears to result from an increase in number of visits resulting in oviposition rather than an increase in the number of eggs laid during a visit.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between the timing of mating and oogenesis in monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) to determine (1) the potential for male nutrient input into eggs and (2) whether mating stimulates egg development. Most females mated soon after they started maturing eggs. One and 2 days after mating, females contained the same number of mature oocytes as virgin females of the same age, while 3 days after mating they contained more mature oocytes than did virgins. These results confirm the potential for male-derived nutrients to augment oocyte production, but indicate that mating is not required for oocyte maturation to occur.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Fopius ceratitivorus Wharton, a recently discovered African parasitoid, was studied in quarantine in Hawaii to facilitate its mass production for biological control of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata. Mean longevity of host-deprived and ovipositing females was 17.3 ± 0.9 d and 16.2 ± 0.5 d, respectively. Ovarian maturation peaked at 61.6 mature eggs per female on the fifth day after eclosion and declined thereafter. Mean number of offspring produced per day by mated females was 5.1 ± 0.4, and realized fecundity expressed as total eggs deposited during the female’s life time was 107.8 ± 12.8. Females were more attracted, to and reproduced significantly more, in fruit substrates containing odors of adult flies and eggs rather than fruit substrates artificially inoculated with fly eggs. Our findings suggest that F. ceratitivorus is a promising new parasitoid for biological control of C. capitata in Hawaii.  相似文献

We studied three species of Lasiocampidae with social, tent-building caterpillars in Northern Bavaria, viz. Eriogaster lanestris, Eriogaster catax, and Malacosoma neustria. We used key life-history data (number of larval instars, sizes and weights of eggs, caterpillars, and moths, size of egg clutches) as well as behavioral data (activity patterns, tent-building behavior, trail following behavior) for a comparative study. Although larvae of all three species are active only in spring, show overlapping habitat requirements, and use the same major host-plant (Prunus spinosa) with only minor differences in phenology, they show markedly different life-history and behavioral strategies.E. catax lays comparatively few but large eggs while E. lanestris lays more but smaller eggs. M. neustria lays the smallest eggs but large clusters. E. lanestris caterpillars build a large tent with an accessible interior while those of E. catax build a small tent that is only used as a resting and molting platform. M. neustria shows a flexible behavior, may abandon the primary tent and build a new one several times. M. neustria colonies also subdivide and reunite regularly while Eriogaster colonies stay together until larvae become solitary. In E. lanestris all tentmates of a colony are highly synchronized while foraging or resting. Instead, in E. catax small subgroups leave the tent for foraging while at every time the majority rests on the tent. M. neustria caterpillars forage more or less individually and only synchronize by night. Results are discussed in relation to other species of the genera Eriogaster and Malacosoma and with regard to the evolution and diversification of caterpillar sociality.  相似文献

Synopsis The Asian cichlid fishes, Etroplus maculatus (Bloch) and E. suratensis (Bloch) were observed in their natural habitat. Ecological and behavioral interactions of these species have not been previously reported. E. suratensis benefits from being cleaned by E. maculatus; it is doubtful the ingestion of parasites and fungi is of much direct benefit to E. maculatus. The advantage to E. maculatus is more likely the survival and reproductive success of adult E. suratensis which in turn provide eggs and eleutheroembryos for the egg-young predatory habit of E. maculatus. Predation is lessened by age-specific crypticity of E. suratensis. E. maculatus displays a unique behavior during its parental cycle where both parents actively defend their young until they are nearly sexually mature and almost the size of the parents. Adult E. suratensis engage in altruistic multiple parental care where several adults care for a single brood that presumably were spawned by only two of the adults. Such behavior has not been reported previously for fish.  相似文献

Most stoneflies oviposit several times during their adult stage. In this study, the relations among oviposition frequency, the number of eggs per egg mass, and body size were examined in the chloroperlid stonefly Sweltsa sp. and two perlodid stoneflies, Isoperla aizuana and Stavsolus japonicus. It was found that larger individuals tended to oviposit more frequently than smaller ones, but the relation was significant only in Isoperla aizuana. In Sweltsa sp. and Isoperla aizuana, the number of eggs per egg mass was higher for the less-frequently ovipositing individuals than for those ovipositing more frequently, and the number of eggs per egg mass decreased with successive oviposition events. Stavsolus japonicus showed the same tendency but it was not statistically significant.  相似文献

Numerous studies have documented the influence of environmental factors such as host plant species and host quality on the oviposition behavior of female insects. This paper shows that an internal physiological factor, the number of mature eggs a female carries (egg load), correlates with host selectivity and clutch size in unmanipulated natural populations of the pipevine swallowtail butterfly, Battus philenor. In addition, search intensity and host selectivity differed among females whose egg loads were manipulated experimentally before they were released and followed in the field. Females with many eggs searched more intensely for hosts and were less selective when they encountered them.  相似文献

In laboratory host-preference studies,Trichogramma platneri Nagarkatti (Hym.: Trichogrammatidae) females, reared on viable codling moth,Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lep.: Tortricidae) eggs, parasitized significantly more viable than nonviable codling moth eggs produced by cobalt 60 irradiated adults. This ovipositional preference was maintained when competition increased per host egg. Similarly, one, three and fiveT. platneri females consistently oviposited more eggs into viable versus nonviable host eggs. A single femaleT. platneri parasitized a similar number of viableC. pomonella and three-lined leafroller,Pandemis limitata (Robinson) (Lep.: Tortricidae) eggs. However, as the number of females per host eggs increased, a significantly larger number of codling moth versus leafroller eggs were parasitized. One, three and fiveTrichogramma females parasitized significantly moreP. limitata versus nonviableC. pomonella eggs. NonviableC. pomonella eggs deflated to less than 25% of their original volume in four and ten days when held under dry and humid conditions respectively. The blackened prepupal stage of the parasitoid generally occurred in the nonviableC. pomonella eggs four days post-parasitization whereas the parasitized viable eggs blackened zero to one day earlier. Incubation under dry or humid conditions did not appear to influence the number of parasitized eggs that were able to blacken and show evidence of parasitism. Several components of egg-laying behavior in 3 clones of E. dilatata were investigated. Using nearest-neighbor analyses it was shown that individual animals lay their eggs randomly within culture dishes in the absence of an artificial substrate while eggs laid in the presence of a substrate are clumped in 2 of the 3 clones studied. Animals preferentially oviposited on artificial substrates containing eggs when given a choice between artificial substrates with and without eggs of conspecifics. When given a choice of natural substrates, animals consistently laid more eggs on the plant species from which they were collected. This preference persisted for 2 generations after animals had been removed from plants. In addition, observations of neonate hatching behavior demonstrated that neonates often spend relatively long times in the immediate vicinity of hatching.  相似文献

Summary Larvae pass through five instars in the temperate, subterranean ponerine ant, Amblyopone silvestrii. Field colonies displayed a large decrease in the number of eggs during mid-summer, despite the fact that queens maintained fully developed ovaries with mature eggs. Observations of laboratory colonies indicate that cannibalism by 1st and 2nd instar larvae caused this decrease in egg number. These instars consumed a total of 66–75% of eggs in the nest, with each larva consuming 2–3 eggs before molting to the 3rd instar. At that time the larvae began to feed on arthropods. The preferred prey of A. silvestrii consists of entire centipedes; the large size of these prey items relative to the size of early instar larvae makes it difficult for the larvae to feed on these prey. Additionally, workers of A. silvestrii do not engage in oral trophallaxis. Consequently, oophagy is a plausible method to feed these very small larvae.  相似文献

Females of three skimmers,Orthetrum japonicum, O. albistylum andO. triangulare, were captured in forests and paddy fields. They were dissected and examined for the number of submature and mature eggs.Orthetrum japonicum andO. albistylum continuously developed eggs throughout their reproductive period. The volume of mature eggs inO. albistylum was the smallest among the three species. The number of mature eggs in ovaries decreased from morning to afternoon, suggesting that all of them oviposited around noon. The number of mature eggs laid byO. japonicum, O. albistylum andO. triangulare was estimated at about 400, 800 and >2000 a day, respectively.  相似文献

The distance at which the bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) can locate Daphnia magna with parthenogenic eggs is shown to be significantly greater than the reactive distance for non-gravid Daphnia of the same size. This difference is due to greater visibility of the gravid prey and not to different locomotor behavior, since there was no correlation between the number of eggs carried by a Daphnia and the antennal beat frequency. Based on this experiment and other observations, an explanation is given for selective predation of polymorphic cladoceran populations.  相似文献

The foraging responses of 1–2-day-old naïve female Platygaster demades to odors of apple and pear foliage and host insect eggs were measured. The host origin of P. demades had no effect on the parasitoids’ longevity, host preference, or foraging behavior. Four distinct behaviors related to oviposition were identified. In choice experiments, more female parasitoids responded to apple foliage with no midge eggs than to midge eggs alone. In a Y-tube olfactometer, parasitoids preferred the plant cues to clean air, and responded equally to both apple and pear odors. The results indicate that P. demades utilizes plant cues to locate the habitat of its host and then searches for host eggs to parasitize.  相似文献
