Significance of predation by protists in aquatic microbial food webs   总被引:31,自引:0,他引:31  
Predation in aquatic microbial food webs is dominated by phagotrophic protists, yet these microorganisms are still understudied compared to bacteria and phytoplankton. In pelagic ecosystems, predaceous protists are ubiquitous, range in size from 2 μm flagellates to >100 μm ciliates and dinoflagellates, and exhibit a wide array of feeding strategies. Their trophic states run the gamut from strictly phagotrophic, to mixotrophic: partly autotrophic and partly phagotrophic, to primarily autotrophic but capable of phagotrophy. Protists are a major source of mortality for both heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria. They compete with herbivorous meso- and macro-zooplankton for all size classes of phytoplankton. Protist grazing may affect the rate of organic sinking flux from the euphotic zone. Protist excretions are an important source of remineralized nutrients, and of colloidal and dissolved trace metals such as iron, in aquatic systems. Work on predation by protists is being facilitated by methodological advances, e.g., molecular genetic analysis of protistan diversity and application of flow cytometry to study population growth and feeding rates. Examples of new research areas are studies of impact of protistan predation on the community structure of prey assemblages and of chemical communication between predator and prey in microbial food webs. To assess the effects of physical dimension and planktivorous fish on phytoplankton standing crop, we repeated an experiment at different scales in plastic enclosures during summer 1995 in Lake Créteil, France. Enclosures were scaled for a constant surface (1.5 × 1.5 m) as depth was increased from 2.5 to 4.5 m. Even-link (zooplankton and phytoplankton) and odd-link (planktivorous fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton) food webs were established in both shallow and deep enclosures. Fish densities in the deep enclosures were scaled to allow comparisons with shallow ones for both in individuals m−2 or individuals m−3. We explicitly designed this experiment to examine the scale-dependent behavior of the top-down mechanism of algal biomass control in lakes, and in particular to test the hypothesis of stronger cascading effects of fish on lower trophic levels at reduced depth. Both fish and enclosure size had highly significant effects on phytoplankton biomass over the duration of the experiment. No depth × fish interaction effects were observed. The presence of planktivorous fish enhanced phytoplankton biomass in both shallow and deep enclosures, although the reduction in depth generally produced a stronger effect. The mean concentration of chlorophyll a in the deep odd-link systems (ca 5 mg m−3) was lower than in the shallow even-link systems (ca 17 mg m−3). Statistical interpretation did not change when data were expressed as phytoplankton biomass per unit of surface area. Light limitation and zooplankton grazing are the most probable mechanisms explaining our results in these nutrient-enriched systems. Moreover, we found that the strength of the cascading effect of fish on plankton was not a function of depth. We believe that further studies on scaling effects should be conducted in order to improve our understanding of ecological patterns and to extrapolate results from micro/mesocosms to natural ecosystems. Zooplankton play a key role in energy transfer within lake food webs, but we have a poor knowledge concerning their role as phytoplankton grazers in shallow subtropical lakes. In this study, we aimed to determine how zooplankton grazing upon phytoplankton is altered in different scenarios of fish predation and turbidity, and we explored the relevance of grazing compared to other environmental variables, to explain phytoplankton biomass changes. A mesocosm experiment was conducted by including the following treatments: fish, turbidity, fish + turbidity, and a control (without fish or varying turbidity). The experiment lasted 21 days, and samples were taken four times. Zooplankton grazing was only effective for the microphagous group upon Cryptophyceae, while large Chlorophyceae and small pennate Bacillariophyceae biomass were benefited in the presence of copepods and cladocerans, being negatively affected by depletions in nitrogen availability. In the turbidity treatment, a reduction in phytoplankton biomass was obtained, artificially increasing zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton, while fish presence inhibited grazing of adult copepods and cladocerans. The other groups of phytoplankton were only influenced by the environment. This experiment suggests that phytoplankton biomass variations would be more affected by the environment than by zooplankton grazing in shallow lakes from the Paraná River.

We developed a mechanistic model of nutrient, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish interactions to test the effects of phytoplankton food quality for herbivorous zooplankton on planktonic food web processes. When phytoplankton food quality is high strong trophic cascades suppress phytoplankton biomass, the zooplankton can withstand intense zooplanktivory, and energy is efficiently transferred through the food web sustaining higher trophic level production. Low food quality results in trophic decoupling at the plant-animal interface, with phytoplankton biomass determined primarily by nutrient availability, zooplankton easily eliminated by fish predation, and poor energy transfer through the food web. At a given nutrient availability, food quality and zooplanktivory interact to determine zooplankton biomass which in turn determines algal biomass. High food quality resulted in intense zooplankton grazing which favored fast-growing phytoplankton taxa, whereas fish predation favored slow-growing phytoplankton. These results suggest algal food quality for herbivorous zooplankton can strongly influence the nature of aquatic food web dynamics, and can have profound effects on water quality and fisheries production. The effects of global and local environmental changes are transmitted through networks of interacting organisms to shape the structure of communities and the dynamics of ecosystems. We tested the impact of elevated temperature on the top-down and bottom-up forces structuring experimental freshwater pond food webs in western Canada over 16 months. Experimental warming was crossed with treatments manipulating the presence of planktivorous fish and eutrophication through enhanced nutrient supply. We found that higher temperatures produced top-heavy food webs with lower biomass of benthic and pelagic producers, equivalent biomass of zooplankton, zoobenthos and pelagic bacteria, and more pelagic viruses. Eutrophication increased the biomass of all organisms studied, while fish had cascading positive effects on periphyton, phytoplankton and bacteria, and reduced biomass of invertebrates. Surprisingly, virus biomass was reduced in the presence of fish, suggesting the possibility for complex mechanisms of top-down control of the lytic cycle. Warming reduced the effects of eutrophication on periphyton, and magnified the already strong effects of fish on phytoplankton and bacteria. Warming, fish and nutrients all increased whole-system rates of net production despite their distinct impacts on the distribution of biomass between producers and consumers, plankton and benthos, and microbes and macrobes. Our results indicate that warming exerts a host of indirect effects on aquatic food webs mediated through shifts in the magnitudes of top-down and bottom-up forcing.  相似文献

The distribution of bacterial and archaeal species in Crater Lake plankton varies dramatically over depth and with time, as assessed by hybridization of group-specific oligonucleotides to RNA extracted from lakewater. Nonmetric, multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis of relative bacterial phylotype densities revealed complex relationships among assemblages sampled from depth profiles in July, August and September of 1997 through 1999. CL500-11 green nonsulfur bacteria (Phylum Chloroflexi) and marine Group I crenarchaeota are consistently dominant groups in the oxygenated deep waters at 300 and 500 m. Other phylotypes found in the deep waters are similar to surface and mid-depth populations and vary with time. Euphotic zone assemblages are dominated either by β-proteobacteria or CL120-10 verrucomicrobia, and ACK4 actinomycetes. MDS analyses of euphotic zone populations in relation to environmental variables and phytoplankton and zooplankton population structures reveal apparent links between Daphnia pulicaria zooplankton population densities and microbial community structure. These patterns may reflect food web interactions that link kokanee salmon population densities to community structure of the bacterioplankton, via fish predation on Daphnia with cascading consequences to Daphnia bacterivory and predation on bacterivorous protists. These results demonstrate a stable bottom-water microbial community. They also extend previous observations of food web-driven changes in euphotic zone bacterioplankton community structure to an oligotrophic setting.  相似文献

Phytoplankton is widely recognized as being regulated mainly by resources (nutrients and light) and predation by higher trophic levels. In reservoirs, these controls also can be modulated by hydrology, for example through the influence of flow pulses generated by the operation of the dam. In this study, we tested the influence of light, nutrients, and zooplankton grazing pressure, and also hydrology (as water residence time) on the phytoplankton biomass in eight tropical hydroelectric reservoirs, which differ in size, morphometry, location, trophic state, and water residence time. Our hypothesis was that, as these reservoirs are used for hydroelectric purposes, the control that would otherwise be exerted on phytoplankton biomass primarily by resource availability and grazing will also be modulated by hydrology. Low phytoplankton biomass (range of system medians = 12–299 μg C l−1) occurred in most systems, except for one highly eutrophic reservoir (median = 1331 μg C l−1). Our data showed that phosphorus was more often likely to be the limiting nutrient in these systems, as assessed through nutrient limitation indexes (nitrogen and phosphorus), based on concentrations and ratios. For most reservoirs, excluding the eutrophic system with high cyanobacteria biomass, seasonal water residence time was the variable that best explained phytoplankton variation among the several environmental variables analyzed in this study (P < 0.0001; adjusted r 2 = 0.38). Hydrology was an important and additional factor modulating phytoplankton in these tropical reservoirs, directly removing phytoplankton populations and their potential zooplankton grazers by washout, and also affecting nutrient availability.  相似文献

The importance of top-down effects of piscivorous fish on phytoplankton in natural oligotrophic lakes is still debated. In this study, we analyzed patterns in phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance in 37 oligotrophic Canadian Shield lakes in relation to variations in both piscivorous fish predation and resources (total phosphorus; TP). Zooplankton community structure (but not total biomass) was partially affected by the variation in fish predation while the phytoplankton community structure and total biomass showed no response. Carbon isotope analyses revealed that the lack of top-down effects is due to the uncoupling of the littoral and the pelagic food webs. We found that the fish community depends mostly on benthic resources, suggesting that only low planktivory occurred in our study lakes. Due to the absence of specialized zooplanktivorous fish, zooplankton is poorly exploited in these lakes and thus able to control phytoplankton by grazing. A comparison of our data with published studies on the TP–chlorophyll a relationships in both natural and manipulated systems shows that the phytoplankton biomass per unit of TP is relatively low in Canadian Shield lakes.  相似文献

Introduction of strictly planktivorous fish to lakes can alter plankton communities via cascading interactions in food webs. Less is known about the large-scale and long-term effects resulting from the introduction of fish with more generalist feeding habits, and the extent to which these effects depend on lake trophic status. Paleolimnological records of three oligotrophic lakes in Maine, USA were used to analyze the response of plankton communities to the introduction of white perch (Morone americana), a fish that often numerically dominates fish assemblages and switches from strict planktivory to a more generalist diet during ontogeny. After white perch introduction, cladoceran ephippia size increased up to 50 %, suggesting that the most important role of this generalist fish, with respect to water quality, is as a piscivorous trophic link. Algal standing crop declined by a quarter to over a half of pre-introduction levels, suggesting that top-down effects of white perch reduced phytoplankton biomass. In comparing these oligotrophic lakes to prior work in a eutrophic system, white perch introduction had similar effects on zooplankton body size; however, cascading effects to phytoplankton were only observed in low productivity lakes.  相似文献

In situ 24-h incubation experiments were performed to analyse the grazing effects of Daphnia magna on a planktonic microbial community. Three field grazing experiments under different nutrient concentrations were carried out on treated effluents of a wastewater treatment plant. The grazing effects of three different D. magna size classes (small (0.6–1.6 mm), medium (1.7–2.5 mm) and large individuals (2.6–3.7 mm)) were compared. The different sizes classes had similar effects on the plankton community. However, our results showed big differences in effects among experiments. Our findings suggest that in spite of D. magna’s non-selective feeding behaviour and the fact that different developmental stages (i.e. its size) had similar effects on the microbial planktonic community, these effects can differ according to the initial structure and composition of the community and the resulting cascading trophic interactions. Moreover, D. magna effects can be direct through grazing (as is the case with ciliates), or indirect through trophic cascade interactions (as is the case with bacteria).  相似文献

Ecological restoration in eutrophic Lake Wuli: A large enclosure experiment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A large-scale enclosure experiment for lake restoration was carried out in Lake Wuli, a northern bay of shallow and eutrophic Lake Taihu in China. The large enclosure with an area of 10 ha was set up in the littoral zone and was bordered by waterproof fabric which did not cover the sediments. Multiple approaches were used and included fish removal, piscivorous fish stocking, shoreline reconstruction, aquatic macrophyte planting, benthic macro-animal stocking, and silver carp cultivation in pens for reduction of cyanobacteria. The results showed that the coverage of aquatic macrophytes increased from 0% to 45.7%. Mean concentrations of TN and TP inside the enclosure from May 2004 to May 2008 were 22.2% and 26.0% of those outside, respectively. Secchi depth was 0.40 m outside the enclosures and 0.75 m inside. However, responses of phytoplankton to the restoration project lagged behind improvement of water quality and reestablishment of aquatic plants. The phytoplankton biomass gradually decreased after the third year of the restoration. Stocking piscivorous fish and planting submerged macrophytes could not increase zooplankton biomass and enhance graze pressure on phytoplankton, most likely due to high omnivorous fish density and lower nutrition inside the enclosure. Higher grazing pressure of zooplankton on phytoplankton was observed in May and October every year. Zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratios were significantly negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass outside (r = −0.440, p < 0.01) and inside the enclosure (r = −0.336, p < 0.05) from February 2004 to March 2007. Therefore, phytoplankton biomass inside and outside the enclosure was lower in May and October. Higher grazing pressure of zooplankton on phytoplankton in spring may result in occurrence of the clear-water phase that facilitated growth of submerged macrophytes in the littoral in Lake Wuli, and a clear-water state and improved water quality would likely be sustained throughout the year after reestablishment of submerged macrophytes.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to address the top-down and bottom-up controls on different microbial web components (bacterioplankton, picophytoplankton, and >3 μm phytoplankton) in an Antarctic lake. Two experiments using a size fractionation approach and nutrient addition were conducted at microcosm scale (2.5 l). The variation in net growth rates (k′) of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton size fractions was analyzed after 5 days. The results determined significant differences; whereas bacterioplankton and large phytoplankton showed an increase in their k′ when their predators were removed, the picophytoplankton showed a decrease. All the studied plankton components presented the highest k′ when nutrients were added. It is suggested that, in this lake, both the top-down and bottom-up regulations account for the regulation of bacterioplankton and large phytoplankton. As for picophytoplankton, the bottom-up control was evident and grazing did not pose a negative impact and rather, had a positive effect probably due to liberation of nutrients.  相似文献

The fate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is partly determined by its availability to microbial degradation. Organisms at upper trophic levels could influence the bioavailability of DOC via cascading effects on primary producers and bacteria. Here we experimentally tested whether the presence of fish in aquatic food webs can indirectly affect the composition of the DOC pool. We found that fish had strong positive effects on phytoplankton biomass that affected the dynamics of DOC composition. Specifically, fish increased protein‐like, algae‐derived DOC mid‐experiment, concurrent with the strongest fish‐induced increase in phytoplankton biomass. Fish also increased bacterial abundance, altered the community composition and diversity of bacteria, and temporarily increased DOC compounds with fluorescence properties indicative of microbially‐reprocessed organic matter. Overall, our experiment revealed that fish can positively influence the substrate (algae‐produced DOC) and the key players (bacteria) of the microbial carbon pump. Consequently, fish could contribute to carbon sequestration by stimulating both the production of bioavailable DOC and the microbial degradation of bioavailable to persistent DOC. We propose this as a novel mechanism whereby the loss of predators from global ecosystems could alter carbon cycling.  相似文献

We examined the impact of five silver carp biomass levels (0, 8, 16, 20, and 32 g m−3) on plankton communities and water quality of Villerest eutrophic reservoir (France). We realized the experiments using outdoor mesocosms. The presence of silver carp led to changes in zooplankton and phytoplankton assemblages. High fish biomass strongly reduced cladoceran abundance (through predation). Silver carp inefficiently grazed down particles < 20 μm. More importantly, however, the suppression of herbivorous cladocerans resulted in the increase of small size algae which were relieved from grazing and benefit from high nutrient concentrations. In contrast, in mesocosms without fish, the dominance of cladocerans (mainly Daphnia) controlled small size algae and probably also larger size algae (colonial chlorophytes, cyanobacteria). Thus, the Secchi disc transparency increased markedly. Through cascade effects, the modification of grazers communities led to changes in the utilization patterns of the added nutrients by phytoplankton communities. In high fish biomass treatments, nutrients were more efficiently accumulated into particulate fractions compared with no-fish and low-fish biomass treatments that were characterized by higher dissolved nutrients concentrations. Zooplankton was an essential source of food for silver carp. The productivity of zooplankton sustained a moderate silver carp biomass (up to 16 g m−3). In the presence of the highest fish biomass, the productivity of zooplankton was not large enough and silver carps fed on additional phytoplankton. Although mesocosms with high fish biomass were characterized by a slight cyanobacteria development compared with other fish mesocosms, silver carp was not effective in reducing cyanobacteria dominance. Low phytoplankton biomass usually occurs in the presence of submerged macrophytes, possibly because submerged macrophytes enhance top-down control of phytoplankton by offering a refuge for efficient grazers like Daphnia against fish predation. However, other field studies also suggest that submerged macrophytes suppress phytoplankton in the absence of Daphnia. In order to investigate these mechanisms further, we conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment to study the effect of submerged macrophytes (Elodea nuttallii) on phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass. The experiment combined four nutrient addition levels (0, 10, 100, and 1000 μg P l−1; N/P ratio: 16) with three macrophyte levels (no macrophytes, artificial macrophytes, and real macrophytes). We inoculated the tanks with species-rich inocula of phytoplankton and zooplankton but excluded fish or macro-invertebrates. Probably due to the lack of predators in the mesocosms, potential grazing rates of pelagic zooplankton (estimated from zooplankton biomass) did not differ between the macrophyte treatment combinations. Compared to the treatment combinations without macrophytes, lower phytoplankton biomass occurred in the treatment combinations with real macrophytes at all the nutrient addition levels and in those with artificial macrophytes at all the nutrient levels except the highest. Significantly, higher abundances of plant-associated filter feeders (Simocephalus vetulus and Ceriodaphnia spp.) occurred in the treatment combinations with real and artificial macrophytes. The estimated potential grazing rate of these plant-associated filter feeders indicated that these filter feeders could be responsible for the lower phytoplankton biomass in the presence of real and artificial macrophytes. Our results suggest that the plant-associated filter feeders may be significant grazers in vegetated shallow lakes.  相似文献

1. In shallow temperate lakes, submerged plants often provide refuge for pelagic zooplankton against fish predation, a mechanism with potential strong cascading effects on water transparency and on the entire ecosystem. In (sub)tropical lakes, however, the interaction between aquatic plants and predation may be more complex, particularly because fish density is high within the plant beds in such systems. 2. Using laboratory ‘habitat choice’ experiments, we determined the effects of three (sub)tropical free‐floating plants, Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia auriculata and the cosmopolitan submerged Ceratophyllum demersum, on horizontal movement by the water flea Daphnia obtusa. We tested for avoidance of plants in the absence and presence of alarm signals from crushed conspecifics and chemical cues from the fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, the fish have been subjected to different feeding regimes. 3. In the absence of other stimuli, D. obtusa strongly avoided the plants and the crushed conspecifics, as expected. However, the response to fish was insignificant regardless of their previous feeding regime. The avoidance of free‐floating plants was more pronounced than that of the submerged plant. Contrary to predictions based on research in temperate lakes, Daphnia did not take refuge among the plants but rather swam away from them when exposed simultaneously to plants and alarm signals. 4. We hypothesise that the avoidance of plants by D. obtusa may ultimately be attributable to an expectedly higher predation risk within the plants than in the pelagic, because of a high density of associated zooplanktivorous fish in the former. In the (sub)tropics, therefore, aquatic plants and particularly the free‐floating ones, may not promote cascading effects via Daphnia grazing on phytoplankton as seen in temperate eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

Predation risk in aquatic systems is often assessed by prey through chemical cues, either those released by prey or by the predator itself. Many studies on predation risk focus on simple pairwise interactions, with only a few studies examining community‐level and ecosystem responses to predation risk in species‐rich food webs. Further, of these few community‐level studies, most assume that prey primarily assess predation risk through chemical cues from consumed prey, even heterospecific prey, rather than just those released by the predator. Here, we compared the effects of different predation cues (predator presence with or without consumed prey) on the structure and functioning of a speciose aquatic food web housed in tropical bromeliads. We found that the mere presence of the top predator (a damselfly) had a strong cascading effect on the food web, propagating down to nutrient cycling. This predation risk cue had no effect on the identity of colonizing species, but strongly reduced the abundance and biomass of the macroinvertebrate colonists. As a result, bacterial biomass and nitrogen cycling doubled, with a concomitant decrease in bacterial production, but CO2 flux was unaffected. These community and ecosystem effects of predator presence cues were not amplified by the addition of chemical cues from consumed prey. Our results show that some of the consequences of predation risk observed in controlled experiments with simplified food webs may be observed in a natural, species‐rich food web.  相似文献

Trophic cascades may purportedly be more common in aquatic than terrestrial food webs, but herbivory on freshwater vascular plants has historically been considered low. Water lilies are an exception, suffering severe grazing damage by leaf beetles. To test whether a central prediction of cascade models—that predator effects propagate downwards to plants—operates in a macrophyte-based food web, we experimentally manipulated predation pressure on a key herbivore of water lilies in the littoral zone of a lake in Michigan, USA. Field experiments comprised combinations of caging treatments to alter the number of predators (larvae of the ladybird beetle Coleomegilla maculata) that hunt the grazers of the macrophytes (larvae of the leaf beetles Galerucella nymphaeae) on the leaves of the water lily Nuphar advena. Predatory larvae of the ladybird beetles significantly reduced grazing damage to water-lily leaves by 35–43%. The predators reduced plant damage chiefly via density-mediated effects, when lower densities of grazers translated to significant declines in plant damage. Plant damage caused by the surviving herbivores was less than predicted from individual grazing rates under predator-free conditions. This suggests that trait-mediated effects may possibly also operate in this cascade. The observed strong effect of predators on a non-adjacent trophic level concurs with an essential component of the trophic cascade model, and the cascade occurred at the ecotone between aquatic and terrestrial habitats: Nuphar is an aquatic macrophyte with emergent and floating leaves, whereas both beetle species are semi-terrestrial and use the dry, emergent and floating leaves of the water lily as habitat. Also, the cascade is underpinned by freshwater macrophytes—a group for which trophic processes have often been underappreciated in the past.  相似文献

1. It is well accepted that fish, if abundant, can have a major impact on the zooplankton community structure during summer, which, particularly in eutrophic lakes, may cascade to phytoplankton and ultimately influence water clarity. Fish predation affects mean size of cladocerans and the zooplankton grazing pressure on phytoplankton. Little is, however, known about the role of fish during winter. 2. We analysed data from 34 lakes studied for 8–9 years divided into three seasons: summer, autumn/spring and winter, and four lake classes: all lakes, shallow lakes without submerged plants, shallow lakes with submerged plants and deep lakes. We recorded how body weight of Daphnia and then cladocerans varied among the three seasons. For all lake types there was a significant positive correlation in the mean body weight of Daphnia and all cladocerans between the different seasons, and only in lakes with macrophytes did the slope differ significantly from one (winter versus summer for Daphnia). 3. These results suggest that the fish predation pressure during autumn/spring and winter is as high as during summer, and maybe even higher during winter in macrophyte‐rich lakes. It could be argued that the winter zooplankton community structure resembles that of the summer community because of low specimen turnover during winter mediated by low fecundity, which, in turn, reflects food shortage, low temperatures and low winter hatching from resting eggs. However, we found frequent major changes in mean body weight of Daphnia and cladocerans in three fish‐biomanipulated lakes during the winter season. 4. The seasonal pattern of zooplankton : phytoplankton biomass ratio showed no correlation between summer and winter for shallow lakes with abundant vegetation or for deep lakes. For the shallow lakes, the ratio was substantially higher during summer than in winter and autumn/spring, suggesting a higher zooplankton grazing potential during summer, while the ratio was often higher in winter in deep lakes. Recent technological advances have led to the discovery that free-living, planktonic protozoa are ubiquitous in nature and appear to be important components of pelagic food webs (e.g., fluorescent straining, flow cytometry). Despite this, limited information exists tying their seasonality to rate processes that drive succession patterns. The abundance, and seasonal growth and grazing loss of an entire protozoan assemblage were evaluated in Lake Michigan. The protozoan assemblage was species-rich (100 taxa) and abundant throughout the year in Lake Michigan. Nano-sized protozoa (Hnano and Pnano, <20 μm in size) ranged in abundance from 102 to 103 cells ml−1, while micro-protozoa (Hmicro and Pmico, >20 and <200 μm in size) ranged in abundance from 4 to 17 cells ml−1. The biomass of Hnano and Hmicro by itself represented more than 70–80% of crustacean zooplankton biomass, while Pnano and Pmicro constituted nearly 50% of phytoplankton biomass. Protozoa exhibited growth rates comparable to other components of the plankton in Lake Michigan, and some populations grew at rates similar to maximum rates determined in the laboratory (rates of 1–2 day−1). Overall, it appears that macro-zooplankton predation is a major loss factor counter-balancing growth with only small differences between the two rate processes (<0.1 day−1). Discrepancies between growth and grazing loss in the spring were likely attributed to sedimentation losses for larger species of tintinnids and dinoflagellates (Codonella, Tintinnidium, and Gymnodinium) that can account for their occurrence in the deep chlorophyll layer. In the summer, carnivory among similar sized species (Chromulina and small ciliates) may be additional loss factors impinging on the protozoan assemblage.  相似文献
