Deep body temperatures were monitored with an implanted radiotelemetry device from 2 to 4 days prepartum to approximately 12 days postpartum in sows. The mean prepartum temperature of five normal sows was 38.6 degrees C, with a range of 38.3--38.9 degrees C. An increase in body temperature (1.4 degrees C) was associated with parturition. The increase in body temperature began about 12 hours before the first pig was born, peaked 1-2 hours after delivery of the last pig, and decreased during the first day postpartum but did not reach the prepartum values. Two days postpartum, the mean body temperature was about 1 degree C higher than it was during the prepartum period. The mean body temperature increased an average of 0.06 degrees C per day during the 12-day postpartum period. A diurnal pattern was evident in the body temperature variations.  相似文献

Five acyclic spring-calving beef cows (20-40 days post partum) were bled every 15 min for 60 h and thereafter every 6 h for 5 days. Gn-RH (5 micrograms) was injected every 2 h for 48 h, starting 12 h after sampling began. Pulsatile patterns of LH release occurred synchronously in response to injection and 4 of the 5 treated animals subsequently ovulated and completed at least one full ovarian cycle. Four of 6 similar control cows were bled every 10 min for 8-h periods at equivalent times post partum. Pulses of LH were seen after approximately Day 25 post partum with a mean pulse frequency of 0.5 per h. There was little evidence of a discrete pulsatile mode of FSH release in any of the treated or control cows. The time to the first significant progesterone rise in the 4 treated and ovulating cows (34.5 +/- 5.6 days post partum) was significantly shorter (P less than 0.05) than in the 6 control animals (66.3 +/- 11.4 days).  相似文献

Postpartum ovarian activity, uterine involution and plasma concentrations of calcium and 15-keto-13, 14 dihydro-prostaglandin F2alpha (PGFM) were assessed in dairy cows with retained fetal membranes (n=10) and milk fever (n=10) at parturition. In addition, calcium and PGFM were evaluated in dairy cows affected with uterine prolapse (n=10) and pyometra (n=14). Cows with retained fetal membrane averaged 24.2+/-3.7 d until their first postpartum ovulation, while controls averaged 29.0+/-3.7 d (P>0.10). In cows with retained fetal membranes, the difference in follicular activity between the contralateral and ipsilateral ovaries in relation to the previously gravid uterine horn was appreciably greater post partum when compared with that of the controls. Cows with milk fever had an average of 30.8+/-3.1 d until their first postpartum ovulation, while control cows had an average of 20.4+/-3.3 d (P<0.05). The mean diameter of the uterine horns in cows with milk fever was greater (P<0.05) compared with that of the controls between Days 15-32 post partum. Concentrations of plasma calcium were lower in cows with retained fetal membranes within 24 h after parturition and during the first week post partum than in the controls (6.27+/-0.18 vs 7.40+/-0.18 mg/100ml, P<0.05). Concentration of calcium was lower (P<0.05) in cows with milk fever on Day 1 prior to treatment (4.68+/-0.40 < 5.8+/-0.45 mg/100ml) than in control cows; however, the calcium (Ca) level was not different during the subsequent 7 d post partum after treatment. Cows with uterine prolapse had lower concentrations of Ca during the first 7 d post partum than the controls (6.10+/-0.15 vs 7.33+/-0.12mg/100ml; P<0.01). Exercise induces shifts in the internal temperature threshold at which cutaneous vasodilation begins. To find whether this shift is accomplished through the vasoconstrictor system or the cutaneous active vasodilator system, two forearm sites (0.64 cm2) in each of 11 subjects were iontophoretically treated with bretylium tosylate to locally block adrenergic vasoconstrictor control. Skin blood flow was monitored by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) at those sites and at two adjacent untreated sites. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was measured noninvasively. Cutaneous vascular conductance was calculated as LDF/MAP. Forearm sweat rate was also measured in seven of the subjects by dew point hygrometry. Whole body skin temperature was raised to 38 degrees C, and supine bicycle ergometer exercise was then performed for 7-10 min. The internal temperature at which cutaneous vasodilation began was recorded for all sites, as was the temperature at which sweating began. The same subjects also participated in studies of heat stress without exercise to obtain vasodilator and sudomotor thresholds from rest. The internal temperature thresholds for cutaneous vasodilation were higher during exercise at both bretylium-treated (36.95 +/- 0.07 degrees C rest, 37.20 +/- 0.04 degrees C exercise, P less than 0.05) and untreated sites (36.95 +/- 0.06 degrees C rest, 37.23 +/- 0.05 degrees C exercise, P less than 0.05). The thresholds for cutaneous vasodilation during rest or during exercise were not statistically different between untreated and bretylium-treated sites (P greater than 0.05). Nineteen healthy male subjects, differing in training status and Vo2max (52 +/- 1 ml.min-1.kg-1, mean +/- SEM; 43-64 ml.min-1.kg-1, range), exercised for 1 h at an absolute workload of 192 +/- 8 W (140-265 W); this was equivalent to 70 +/- 1% Vo2max (66-74%). Each exercise test was performed on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at a constant ambient temperature (22.5 +/- 0.0 degrees C) and relative humidity (85 +/- 0%). Nude body weight was recorded prior to and after each exercise test. Absolute sweat loss (body weight loss corrected for respiratory weight loss) during each test was 910 +/- 82 g (426-1665 g); this was equivalent to 1.3 +/- 0.1% (0.7-2.2%) of pre-exercise body weight (relative sweat loss). Weighted mean skin temperature and rectal temperature increased after 5 min of exercise from 30.5 +/- 0.3 degrees C and 37.2 +/- 0.1 degrees C respectively to 32.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C and 38.8 +/- 0.1 degrees C respectively, recorded immediately prior to the end of exercise. Bivariate linear regression and Pearson's correlation demonstrated absolute sweat loss was related to Vo2max (r = 0.72, p less than 0.001), absolute exercise workload (r = 0.66, p less than 0.01), body surface area (r = 0.62, p less than 0.01), weight (r = 0.60, p less than 0.01) and height (r = 0.53, p less than 0.05). Temperatures were recorded at several body sites in emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) diving at an isolated dive hole in order to document temperature profiles during diving and to evaluate the role of hypothermia in this well-studied model of penguin diving physiology. Grand mean temperatures (+/-S.E.) in central body sites during dives were: stomach: 37.1+/-0.2 degrees C (n=101 dives in five birds), pectoral muscle: 37.8+/-0.1 degrees C (n=71 dives in three birds) and axillary/brachial veins: 37.9+/-0.1 degrees C (n=97 dives in three birds). Mean diving temperature and duration correlated negatively at only one site in one bird (femoral vein, r=-0.59, P<0.05; range <1 degrees C). In contrast, grand mean temperatures in the wing vein, foot vein and lumbar subcutaneous tissue during dives were 7.6+/-0.7 degrees C (n=157 dives in three birds), 20.2+/-1.2 degrees C (n=69 in three birds) and 35.2+/-0.2 degrees C (n=261 in six birds), respectively. Mean limb temperature during dives negatively correlated with diving duration in all six birds (r=-0.29 to -0.60, P<0.05). In two of six birds, mean diving subcutaneous temperature negatively correlated with diving duration (r=-0.49 and -0.78, P<0.05). Sub-feather temperatures decreased from 31 to 35 degrees C during rest periods to a grand mean of 15.0+/-0.7 degrees C during 68 dives of three birds; mean diving temperature and duration correlated negatively in one bird (r=-0.42, P<0.05). In general, pectoral, deep venous and even stomach temperatures during diving reflected previously measured vena caval temperatures of 37-39 degrees C more closely than the anterior abdominal temperatures (19-30 degrees C) recently recorded in diving emperors. Although prey ingestion can result in cooling in the stomach, these findings and the lack of negative correlations between internal temperatures and diving duration do not support a role for hypothermia-induced metabolic suppression of the abdominal organs as a mechanism of extension of aerobic dive time in emperor penguins diving at the isolated dive hole. Such high temperatures within the body and the observed decreases in limb, anterior abdomen, subcutaneous and sub-feather temperatures are consistent with preservation of core temperature and cooling of an outer body shell secondary to peripheral vasoconstriction, decreased insulation of the feather layer, and conductive/convective heat loss to the water environment during the diving of these emperor penguins.  相似文献

We examined body core and skin temperatures and thermal comfort in young Japanese women suffering from unusual coldness (C, n = 6). They were selected by interview asking whether they often felt severe coldness even in an air-conditioned environment (20-26 degrees C) and compared with women not suffering from coldness (N, n = 6). Experiments were conducted twice for each subject: 120-min exposure at 23.5 degrees C or 29.5 degrees C after a 40-min baseline at 29.5 degrees C. Mean skin temperature decreased (P < 0.05) from 33.6 +/- 0.1 degrees C (mean +/- SE) to 31.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C and from 33.5 +/- 0.1 degrees C to 31.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C in C and N during the 23.5 degrees C exposure. Fingertip temperature in C decreased more than in N (P < 0.05; from 35.2 +/- 0.1 degrees C to 23.6 +/- 0.2 degrees C and from 35.5 +/- 0.1 degrees C to 25.6 +/- 0.6 degrees C). Those temperatures during the 29.5 degrees C exposure remained at the baseline levels. Rectal temperature during the 23.5 degrees C exposure was maintained at the baseline level in both groups (from 36.9 +/- 0.2 degrees C to 36.8 +/- 0.1 degrees C and 37.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C to 37.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C in C and N). The rating scores of cold discomfort for both the body and extremities were greater (P < 0.05) in C than in N. Thus the augmented thermal sensitivity of the body to cold and activated vasoconstriction of the extremities during cold exposure could be the mechanism for the severe coldness felt in C.  相似文献

Mean (+/- s.d.) pregnancy length for the 14 llamas in this study was 350 +/- 4.5 days. Plasma progesterone concentrations increased by 5 days after mating and remained elevated (greater than 2.0 ng/ml) throughout most of pregnancy. At about 2 weeks before parturition, plasma progesterone concentrations began to decline, dropped markedly during the final 24 h before parturition, and returned to basal concentrations (less than 0.5 ng/ml) by the day of parturition. The combined oestrone + oestradiol-17 beta and oestradiol-17 beta concentrations varied between 6 and 274 pg/ml and 4 and 114 pg/ml, respectively, during the first 9 months of pregnancy. Concentrations increased between 9 months after mating and the end of pregnancy with peak mean concentrations of 827 +/- 58 (s.e.m.) pg oestrone + oestradiol-17 beta/ml (range: 64-1658) and 196 +/- 10 pg oestradiol-17 beta/ml (31-294) during the last week of pregnancy. Concentrations then declined to 87 +/- 14 pg oestrone + oestradiol-17 beta/ml (7-488) and 25 +/- 5 pg oestradiol-17 beta/ml (2.5-142) during the first week post partum. Plasma cortisol concentrations varied between 2.6 and 51.9 ng/ml (14.0 +/- 0.5) from mating until 2 weeks before parturition when the concentrations began to decline. Only a slight increase in plasma cortisol concentrations was observed in association with parturition. Conflicting reports exist about the role of baroreflexes in efferent control of eccrine sweat rate. These conflicting reports may be due to differing mean body temperatures between studies. The purpose of this project was to test the hypothesis that mean body temperature modulates the effect of head-up tilt on sweat rate and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA). To address this question, mean body temperature (0.9.internal temperature + 0.1.mean skin temperature), SSNA (microneurography of peroneal nerve, n = 8), and sweat rate (from an area innervated by the peroneal nerve and from two forearm sites, one perfused with neostigmine to augment sweating at lower mean body temperatures and the second with the vehicle, n = 12) were measured in 13 subjects during multiple 30 degrees head-up tilts during whole body heating. At the end of the heat stress, mean body temperature (36.8 +/- 0.1 to 38.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C) and sweat rate at all sites were significantly elevated. No significant correlations were observed between mean body temperature and the change in SSNA during head-up tilt (r = 0.07; P = 0.62), sweating within the innervated area (r = 0.06; P = 0.56), sweating at the neostigmine treated site (r = 0.04; P = 0.69), or sweating at the control site (r = 0.01; P = 0.94). Also, for each tilt throughout the heat stress, there were no significant differences in sweat rate (final tilt sweat rates were 0.69 +/- 0.11 and 0.68 +/- 0.11 mg.cm(-2).min(-1) within the innervated area; 1.04 +/- 0.16 and 1.06 +/- 0.16 mg.cm(-2).min(-1) at the neostigmine-treated site; and 0.85 +/- 0.15 and 0.85 +/- 0.15 mg.cm(-2).min(-1) at the control site, for supine and tilt, respectively). Hence, these data indicate that mean body temperature does not modulate eccrine sweat rate during baroreceptor unloading induced via 30 degrees head-up tilt.  相似文献

Changes in the concentration of cortisol were observed in the jugular venous plasma of pregnant buffaloes on days 30, 15, 5, 2 and 1 prepartum, at partum, at regular 6-hr intervals up to 72 hr postpartum and on days 4, 6, 10, 18, 34 and 50 postpartum. A radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure for cortisol standardized in the laboratory was used. Mean plasma cortisol levels showed little fluctuation (P<0.05) between days 30 and 2 prepartum with the values ranging from 1.28 +/- 0.23 to 1.46 +/- 0.13ng/ml. A small (but nonsignificant) rise in the hormone level was observed one day prepartum followed by a sharp increase to a high mean value of 3.78+/-0.36 ng/ml (P<0.05) at parturition. A sharp decline (P<0.05) to a low mean value was recorded within 6 hr postpartum followed by marked fluctuations in the hormone level up to 72 hr postpartum. The hormone levels subsequently varied narrowly between 1.74+/-0.39 and 2.01+/-0.27 ng/ml up to 50 days postpartum.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible differences in the postexercise cutaneous vasodilatory response between men and women. Fourteen subjects (7 men and 7 women) of similar age, body composition, and fitness status remained seated resting for 15 min or cycled for 15 min at 70% of peak oxygen consumption followed by 15 min of seated recovery. Subjects then donned a liquid-conditioned suit. Mean skin temperature was clamped at approximately 34 degrees C for 15 min. Mean skin temperature was then increased at a rate of 4.3 +/- 0.8 degrees C/h while local skin temperature was clamped at 34 degrees C. Skin blood flow was measured continuously at two forearm skin sites, one with (UT) and without (BT) (treated with bretylium tosylate) intact alpha-adrenergic vasoconstrictor activity. The exercise threshold for cutaneous vasodilation in women (37.51 +/- 0.08 degrees C and 37.58 +/- 0.04 degrees C for UT and BT, respectively) was greater than that measured in men (37.33 +/- 0.06 degrees C and 37.35 +/- 0.06 degrees C for UT and BT, respectively) (P < 0.05). Core temperatures were similar to baseline before the start of whole body warming for all conditions. Postexercise heart rate (HR) for the men (77 +/- 4 beats/min) and women (87 +/- 6 beats/min) were elevated above baseline (61 +/- 3 and 68 +/- 4 beats/min for men and women, respectively), whereas mean arterial pressure (MAP) for the men (84 +/- 3 mmHg) and women (79 +/- 3 mmHg) was reduced from baseline (93 +/- 3 and 93 +/- 4 mmHg for men and women, respectively) (P < 0.05). A greater increase in HR and a greater decrease in the MAP postexercise were noted in women (P < 0.05). No differences in core temperature, HR, and MAP were measured in the no-exercise trial. The postexercise threshold for cutaneous vasodilation measured at the UT and BT sites for men (37.15 +/- 0.03 degrees C and 37.16 +/- 0.04 degrees C, respectively) and women (37.36 +/- 0.05 degrees C and 37.42 +/- 0.03 degrees C, respectively) were elevated above no exercise (36.94 +/- 0.07 degrees C and 36.97 +/- 0.05 degrees C for men and 36.99 +/- 0.09 degrees C and 37.03 +/- 0.11 degrees C for women for the UT and BT sites, respectively) (P < 0.05). A difference in the magnitude of the thresholds was measured between women and men (P < 0.05). We conclude that women have a greater postexercise onset threshold for cutaneous vasodilation than do men and that the primary mechanism influencing the difference between men and women in postexercise skin blood flow is likely the result of an altered active vasodilatory response and not an increase in adrenergic vasoconstrictor tone.  相似文献

Forty white rats were raised and mated in a controlled environment at 22°C. Twelve hours after parturition they were mated and separated into two equal groups. One group (control) remained at 22°C whilst the second group(desert) was kept in an open shed during July (daily temperature range: 18 to 37°C). The rats were sacrificed at 18 days post partum. Control rats ate 25% more food than desert rats; water consumption was the same in both groups. Body weights were initially similar, but from 12 days post partum onwards, the control rats increased their body weight at a significantly higher rate than did the desert rats. Milk production, assessed by litter weight gains, was higher in control group rats. Body composition and organ weights were similar except for the gut of the control group which was heavier. The number of CORPORA LUTEA was significantly lower in the desert group as were conception rates and embryo numbers; the weight of individual embryos and the weight of embryo per dam were, however, significantly higher in the desert group. It was postulated that during early pregnancy, maternal weight and mammary tissue may have preference over the uterus for nutritional sources, whilst in later pregnancy the embryos may have preference.  相似文献

The plasma estrogen and progesterone concentrations of 19 pregnant cows (average duration of pregnancy 266.0 +/- 2.3 d at the start of the study) were determined daily from Day 6 pre partum to Day 1 post partum. Parturition was induced in all cows by administration of 10 mg i.m. flumethasone. Values were centered around the delivery date (Day 0) following either induced normal calving (n = 3) or surgical delivery (n = 16). In animals showing spontaneous expulsion of the fetal membranes (Group 1, n = 6) the average total estrogen concentration increased significantly from Day 6 until Day 1 before parturition (1329.2 +/- 317.9 to 3719.8 +/- 951.2 pg/ml in total estrogens). A marked decrease was observed on Day 1 post partum (459.4 +/- 344.2 pg/ml). In comparison with Group 1, animals showing either a delayed or partial expulsion of the fetal membranes, or in which the placenta could be withdrawn 16 h after calving (Group 2, n = 5), had consistently lower total estrogen concentrations between Day 6 (595.4 +/- 174.8 pg/ml) and Day 1 (1884.3 +/- 565.1 pg/ml) before parturition. The estrogen values of the cows with retained placenta (Group 3, n = 8) from Days 6 to 0 pre partum were significantly lower than those of Group 2. Total estrogen concentrations of the three groups 1 d post partum did not differ significantly. It is generally recognized that estrogens play an important role in the maturation process of the placentomes. Our investigation demonstrates that not only is the magnitude of the prepartum rise in estrogens of great influence of the maturation process but the duration of this rise is likewise important. These two factors are vital for a normal expulsion of the fetal membranes.  相似文献

Vaginal temperatures (VT) of crossbred (Japanese Black crossed Holstein-Friesian) beef cows (n = 31) were measured by a data-logging apparatus to obtain serial data from days 0 to 6 before parturition. For both single and twin pregnancies, no significant differences were observed in VT during days 3-6 before parturition. Maternal VT was not affected by maternal weight just after parturition, parity, fetal sex, or total fetal litter weight. Average of twin litter weights for two males (MM) and two females (FF) had the strong positive correlations (r = 0.84; P < 0.05) with maternal VT, whereas twin weights of mixed-gender twins (FM) did not correlate with maternal VT (r = -0.26; P = 0.61). Maternal temperature decreased as weights of the female fetus of FM twins became heavier (r = -0.82; P < 0.05). In contrast, maternal VT of FF and MM twins increased as twin weights increased. We defined when the VT began to decrease before parturition by two different methods. One was the "same hours method" where differences in VT between a particular time of day and the corresponding time of the preceding day were compared when the VT was consistently > or =0.3 or > or =0.5 degrees C for more than 3h. The second method was the "maximum-minimum method" where decreased in the maximum or the minimum values of the day over > or =0.3 and > or =0.5 degrees C were compared to values of preceding day. Onset of decreased VT before expulsion was not different between singletons and twins. In an attempt to define the critical condition in predicting parturition, we estimated assumable predicting probability using the 31 cows that were collected VT. When the parturition occurred within 60 h in the "same hours method" and 72 h since VT was > or =0.3 degrees C and in the "maximum-minimum method", the assumable probability was 100%. In verification experiment under these condition, the "same hours method" had a higher probability of predicting the time of parturition than the "maximum-minimum method", and it was possible to detect the onset of decreased VT at the correct time by the minutes. We concluded that "same hours method" was useful for predicting parturition time in cattle with single and twin pregnancies by the serial measurement of vaginal temperature.  相似文献

Sixty twin-bearing ewes were allocated to one of four dietary treatments investigating the effects of supplementary iodine or cobalt during late pregnancy on lamb serum immunoglobulin G (IgG), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and vitamin E concentrations, and lamb IgG absorption efficiency. Ewes were offered grass silage ad libitum supplemented with 800 g per ewe per day of a 190 g/kg crude protein (CP) concentrate from day 126 of gestation until parturition plus one of the following supplements (n = 15 per treatment); no supplement (C); 26.6 mg iodine per day for final 3 weeks pre partum (I-3); 26.6 mg iodine/day for final week pre partum (I-1); 20 mg cobalt/day for final 3 weeks pre partum (Co-3). Lambs were blood sampled at 24 and 72 h post partum for serum IgG and vitamin E concentrations. Ten lambs from C and I-3 were blood sampled at 1 h post partum for serum IgG, vitamin E, T3 and T4 concentrations. There were no differences in serum IgG, vitamin E or T4 values (P > 0.05) at 1 h post partum between lambs born to the C and I-3 ewes. T3 levels were lower in I-3 compared with C progeny (P < 0.05). Supplemental iodine reduced colostral IgG absorption efficiency (P < 0.001) and lamb serum IgG concentrations at 24 and 72 h post partum (P < 0.001). Serum vitamin E concentration in I-3 and I-1 lambs was lower than in Co-3 lambs at 24 h post partum, while at 72 h post partum I-3, I-1 and Co-3 lambs had significantly lower concentrations than C lambs (P < 0.001). Supplementing the ewe's diet with 26.6 mg/day of iodine for the final week of pregnancy reduced lamb serum IgG concentration at 24 and 72 h post partum. The lower total and free T3 values in the progeny of I-3-treated ewes suggest interference in the synthesis and metabolism of thyroid hormones when ewes receive excessive dietary iodine for 3 weeks immediately pre partum. Based on these findings, the indications are that the toxicity level for iodine in the diet of the pregnant ewe should be lowered to 20 mg per ewe per day, equivalent to 40% of its current level. The finding that high-level cobalt supplementation during the final 3 weeks of pregnancy will have a negative effect on serum vitamin E concentration at 72 h post partum is a new and significant finding and previously has not been reported in the literature.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the hypophysial responsiveness to GnRH at different intervals post partum in Murrah buffalo. Plasma LH and FSH levels were measured at 1 h before and upto 6 h subsequent to the administration of GnRH (1 ug/kg body weight) or saline on Days 2, 20 and 35 post partum in 2 groups of buffalo (n=4 each). Plasma progesterone levels were measured in samples collected once daily from Day 3 to Day 46 post partum. Pretreatment basal LH levels exhibited a progressive increase from Day 2 through Day 35 post partum, while the basal FSH levels increased only until Day 20 post partum. Following a highly subdued LH response to GnRH on Day 2 post partum, a 408% increase (P < 0.01) was observed in the total LH released in response to GnRH on Day 20 post partum, followed by a 20% reduction (non-significant) over Days 20 to 35 post partum. The interval from parturition was highly correlated with total LH released (r = 0.711, P < 0.01). Unlike LH, a substantial amount of FSH was released following GnRH treatment on Day 2 post partum, which was not significantly different from the FSH response on Days 20 and 35 post partum. The LH and FSH response to GnRH was not significantly different between animals in which luteal activity resumed and in those which showed no luteal activity post partum. While pointing to a dramatic enhancement in the hypophysial responsiveness to GnRH between Days 2 and 20 post partum, these results suggest that pituitary responsiveness to GnRH does not appear to be the limiting factor for resumption of estrous cycles by Day 35 post partum in Murrah buffalo.  相似文献

By cooling the hypothalamus during hyperthermia, selective brain cooling reduces the drive on evaporative heat loss effectors, in so doing saving body water. To investigate whether selective brain cooling was increased in dehydrated sheep, we measured brain and carotid arterial blood temperatures at 5-min intervals in nine female Dorper sheep (41 +/- 3 kg, means +/- SD). The animals, housed in a climatic chamber at 23 degrees C, were exposed for nine days to a cyclic protocol with daytime heat (40 degrees C for 6 h). Drinking water was removed on the 3rd day and returned 5 days later. After 4 days of water deprivation, sheep had lost 16 +/- 4% of body mass, and plasma osmolality had increased from 290 +/- 8 to 323 +/- 9 mmol/kg (P < 0.0001). Although carotid blood temperature increased during heat exposure to similar levels during euhydration and dehydration, selective brain cooling was significantly greater in dehydration (0.38 +/- 0.18 degrees C) than in euhydration (-0.05 +/- 0.14 degrees C, P = 0.0008). The threshold temperature for selective brain cooling was not significantly different during euhydration (39.27 degrees C) and dehydration (39.14 degrees C, P = 0.62). However, the mean slope of lines of regression of brain temperature on carotid blood temperature above the threshold was significantly lower in dehydrated animals (0.40 +/- 0.31) than in euhydrated animals (0.87 +/- 0.11, P = 0.003). Return of drinking water at 39 degrees C led to rapid cessation of selective brain cooling, and brain temperature exceeded carotid blood temperature throughout heat exposure on the following day. We conclude that for any given carotid blood temperature, dehydrated sheep exposed to heat exhibit selective brain cooling up to threefold greater than that when euhydrated.  相似文献

Resting subjects were immersed for 30 min in water at 22 and 30 degrees C after drinking alcohol. Total ventilation, end-tidal PCO2, rectal temperature, aural temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, and oxygen consumption were recorded during the experiments. Blood samples taken before the immersion period were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. The mean blood alcohol levels were 82.50 +/- 9.93 mg.(100 ml)-1 and 100.6 +/- 12.64 mg (100 ml)-1 for the immersions at 22 and 30 degrees C, respectively. There was no significant change in body temperature measured aurally or rectally, mean surface skin temperature, or heart rate at either water temperature tested. Total expired ventilation was significantly attenuated for the last 15 min of the immersion at 22 degrees C, after alcohol consumption as compared to the ventilation change in water at 22 degrees C without ethanol. This response was not consistently significantly altered during immersion in water at 30 degrees C. It is evident that during a 30-min immersion in tepid water with a high blood alcohol level, body heat loss is not affected but some changes in ventilation do occur.  相似文献

Surface temperatures (Ts) of eight 13-lined ground squirrels and seven yellow-bellied marmots were measured during arousal from hibernation using infrared thermography (IRT) and recorded on videotape. Animals aroused normally in 5 degrees C cold rooms. Body temperatures were recorded during arousal using both cheek pouch and interscapular temperature probes. Warming rate in arousal was exponential. Mean mass specific warming rates show the squirrels warm faster (69.76 degrees C/h/kg) than the marmots (4.49 degrees C/h/kg). Surface temperatures (Ts) for 11 regions were measured every few minutes during arousal. The smaller ground squirrel shows the ability to perfuse distal regions without compromising rise in deep body temperature (Tb). All squirrel Ts's remained low as Tb rose to 18 degrees C, at which point, eyes opened, squirrels became more active and all Ts's rose parallel to Tb. Marmot Ts remained low as Tb rose initially. Each marmot showed a plateau phase where Tb remained constant (mean Tb 20.3+/-1.0 degrees C, duration 9.4+/-4.1 min) during which time all Ts's rose, and then remained relatively constant as Tb again began to rise. An anterior to posterior Ts gradient was evident in the ground squirrel, both body and feet. This gradient was only evident in the feet of the marmots.  相似文献

Sexual behaviour of 16 female and 12 male rabbits was studied during pregnancy and early post partum. The main behavioural events of the male (nuzzling and mounting) did not differ in the presence of receptive or non-receptive females. When introduced into the cage of the male, receptive and non-receptive females flattened to the floor or circled around. Sexual receptivity to males decreased in early pregnancy and increased to a maximum a few days around parturition; on Days 1 and 6 post partum, all experimental rabbits submitted to mating. Two groups of females were distinguished: one group submitting to mating whatever the stage of pregnancy, the second being receptive only during the few days before parturition or post partum. During pregnancy and early post partum there was no relation between the colour of the vulva and the female sexual behaviour. Does remained sexually receptive even when progesterone concentrations were high. Nevertheless, the number of receptive females was higher when progesterone concentrations decreased around parturition and the mean daily progesterone values were consistently higher in non-receptive than in receptive females. Oestrogen concentrations during pregnancy were very low and were not related to receptive behaviour.  相似文献
