How does natural selection lead to cooperation between competing individuals? The Prisoner's Dilemma captures the essence of this problem. Two players can either cooperate or defect. The payoff for mutual cooperation, R, is greater than the payoff for mutual defection, P. But a defector versus a cooperator receives the highest payoff, T, where as the cooperator obtains the lowest payoff, S. Hence, the Prisoner's Dilemma is defined by the payoff ranking T > R > P > S . In a well‐mixed population, defectors always have a higher expected payoff than cooperators, and therefore natural selection favors defectors. The evolution of cooperation requires specific mechanisms. Here we discuss five mechanisms for the evolution of cooperation: direct reciprocity, indirect reciprocity, kin selection, group selection, and network reciprocity (or graph selection). Each mechanism leads to a transformation of the Prisoner's Dilemma payoff matrix. From the transformed matrices, we derive the fundamental conditions for the evolution of cooperation. The transformed matrices can be used in standard frameworks of evolutionary dynamics such as the replicator equation or stochastic processes of game dynamics in finite populations.  相似文献

Five new methods for determining the relations between kinetic data of fermentations are described and applied to an industrial antibotic fermentation process. The input data for these method are the elements of the distance matrix dij, which quantify the sum of the deviation squares between the time dependent kinetics x (t) of the fermentation runs i and j. For each measurable or calculable kinetic state variable, one n x n distance matrix must be calculated where n is the number of fermentation runs. All methods compare these distance matrices by statistical or graph-theoretical approaches. The algorithms obtained are universally applicable if enough kinetic data are available, especially from more than 10 comparable fermentation runs. The algorithms were developed for the use in knowledge acquisition modules of expert systems.  相似文献

Agonistic intervention behavior was observed in captive groups of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), and stumptail monkeys (M. arctoides). Reciprocity correlations of interventions were determined while removing from the data the effects of several symmetrical relationship characteristics, that is, matrillineal kinship, proximity relations, and same-sex combination. It was considered likely that if significant reciprocity persisted after controlling for these characteristics, the reciprocity was based on cognitive mechanisms. Statistical significance was tested by means of recently developed matrix permutation procedures. All three species exhibited significant reciprocity with regard to beneficial interventions, even after controlling for symmetrical traits. Harmful interventions were, however, reciprocal among chimpanzees only. This species showed a “revenge system”, that is, if A often intervened against B, B did the same to A. In contrast, both macaque species showed significantly inversed reciprocity in their harmful interventions: if A often intervened against B, B rarely intervened against A. Further analysis indicates that the strict hierarchy of macaques prevents them from achieving complete reciprocity. Compared to chimpanzees, macaques rarely intervene against higher ranking group members. The observed contrast can be partially explained on the basis of differences in available space, as indicated by a comparison of indoor and outdoor living conditions for the chimpanzee colony. Yet, even when such spatial factors are taken into account, substantial behavior differences between chimpanzees and macaques remain.  相似文献

It is shown on the basis of (1) conservation of mass, (2) positive concentrations, and (3) the principle of detail balancing that periodic reactions cannot occur in a closed system described bylinear differential equations. The matrix,A, of the rate equations must be such that |A|=0,a ij>0 forij,a ii<0, andVAV −1=B, whereV is diagonal andB is symmetric. These properties ofA imply that the latent roots are real and non-positive and that neither catalysis nor inhibition can be described bylinear equations. It is further shown that periodic reactions cannot occur in anopen system for which the matrix associated with the chemical reactions has the above properties and in which thesimple law of diffusion is obeyed. The relation of these results to Onsager's reciprocal relations and to previous work on periodic and cyclic chemical reactions is discussed. The utility of certain of these results for the treatment of isotope kinetics is indicated. Does turgor limit growth in tall trees?   总被引:16,自引:2,他引:14  
The gravitational component of water potential contributes a standing 0.01 MPa m?1 to the xylem tension gradient in plants. In tall trees, this contribution can significantly reduce the water potential near the tree tops. The turgor of cells in buds and leaves is expected to decrease in direct proportion with leaf water potential along a height gradient unless osmotic adjustment occurs. The pressure–volume technique was used to characterize height‐dependent variation in leaf tissue water relations and shoot growth characteristics in young and old Douglas‐fir trees to determine the extent to which growth limitation with increasing height may be linked to the influence of the gravitational water potential gradient on leaf turgor. Values of leaf water potential (Ψl), bulk osmotic potential at full and zero turgor, and other key tissue water relations characteristics were estimated on foliage obtained at 13.5 m near the tops of young (approximately 25‐year‐old) trees and at 34.7, 44.2 and 55.6 m in the crowns of old‐growth (approximately 450‐year‐old) trees during portions of three consecutive growing seasons. The sampling periods coincided with bud swelling, expansion and maturation of new foliage. Vertical gradients of Ψl and pressure–volume analyses indicated that turgor decreased with increasing height, particularly during the late spring when vegetative buds began to swell. Vertical trends in branch elongation, leaf dimensions and leaf mass per area were consistent with increasing turgor limitation on shoot growth with increasing height. During the late spring (May), no osmotic adjustment to compensate for the gravitational gradient of Ψl was observed. By July, osmotic adjustment had occurred, but it was not sufficient to fully compensate for the vertical gradient of Ψl. In tall trees, the gravitational component of Ψl is superimposed on phenologically driven changes in leaf water relations characteristics, imposing potential constraints on turgor that may be indistinguishable from those associated with soil water deficits.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in tissue water relations of Erica arborea L., Myrtus communis L. and Juniperus communis L., grown in a Mediterranean environment, were analysed under field conditions over a 12 month period by comparing plants grown in the proximity of a natural CO2 spring (about 700 μ mol mol ? 1 atmospheric CO2 concentration, [CO2]) with plants in ambient conditions. Tissue water relations varied in response to changes in water availability, but the seasonal course of tissue water relations parameters was also related to ontogeny. Tissue water relations of these co‐occurring shrubs were not alike. Osmotic potentials and saturated mass/dry mass ratio were lowest during peak drought stress periods. Diurnal changes in osmotic potential at the point of turgor loss were least early in the season, maximal in mid‐season, and decreased again in autumn. Turgor potentials decreased as drought progressed and were highest in late fall and mid‐winter. Symplastic water fraction was highest in mid‐spring for E. arborea and M. communis and decreased during the summer, while the opposite was observed for J. communis. Common to all species, under elevated [CO2], was an increase of turgor pressure, particularly during the summer months. Other parameters showed species‐specific responses to long‐term elevated [CO2]. In particular, exposure to elevated [CO2] increased osmotic potentials in E. arborea under drought, while the opposite was the case for J. communis. Site differences in predawn to midday shifts were not strong in any of the species. Differences in tissue water relations suggest that the coexistence of these shrubs in the same environment with similar water availability are partially based on differential water relations strategies and water use patterns. Regardless of the mechanisms, growth of these shrubs in elevated [CO2] may be either less, similarly or more affected by drought stress than plants in ambient [CO2] depending on the species and season.  相似文献

A large retinol-binding protein, interphotoreceptor retinol-binding protein, is found only in the interphotoreceptor matrix of the eye, and may function in vitamin A transport for the visual cycle. Interphotoreceptor retinol-binding protein is the major glycoprotein of this matrix, and can be isolated rapidly by affinity-adsorption onto concanavalin A-Sepharose. The yield is approx. 0.25 mg per bovine eye. Its apparent Mr is 250 000 by gel-filtration chromatography, and 225 000 by native polyacrylamide-gradient gel electrophoresis; this protein band displays endogenous retinol fluorescence on such gels. As measured by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the apparent Mr is 140 000. In the interphotoreceptor matrix most vitamin A-binding sites on this retinol-binding protein are unoccupied; however, addition of exogenous all-trans-retinol can saturate these sites. The apparent dissociation constant for retinol is 10−6 M, as measured by fluorimetric titration.  相似文献

A way of characterizing cell size distribution in suspensions of single-cell microorganisms is suggested, based on the first and second moments around origin. Suspension density may be predicted on the basis of the mixing law and the density of microbial dry matter, for suspensions ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida lipolytica, andAspergillus niger. Newtonian viscosities were correlated using regression analysis by η=Aexp(BC m)exp(D/t); another correlation is presented for the calculation of surface tension in single-cell microbial suspensions. All the relations are valid in the range of concentrations up to 15% (w/v) and for temperatures between 15° and 35°C. The formulae presented may be used in other hydraulic studies.  相似文献

Background  

Much of the experimental work in soft tissue mechanics has been focused on fitting approximate relations for specific tissue types from aggregate data on multiple samples of the tissue. Such relations are needed for modeling applications and have reasonable predictability - especially given the natural variance in specimens. There is, however, much theoretical and experimental work to be done in determining constitutive behaviors for particular specimens and tissues. In so doing, it may be possible to exploit the natural variation in tissue ultrastructure - so to relate ultrastructure composition to tissue behavior. Thus, this study focuses on an experimental method for determining constitutive behaviors and illustrates the method with analysis of a porcine pulmonary artery strip. The method characterizes the elastic part of the response (implicitly in terms of stretch) and the inelastic part in terms of short term stretch history (i.e., stretch-rate) H t2, longer term stretch history H t1, and time since the start of testing T.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to extent the range of knowledge about water relations and stomatal responses to water stress to ten Mediterranean plants with different growth forms and leaf habits. Plants were subjected to different levels of water stress and a treatment of recovery. Stomatal attributes (stomatal density, StoD), stomatal conductance (g s), stomatal responsiveness to water stress (SR), leaf water relations (pre-dawn and midday leaf water potential and relative water content), soil to leaf apparent hydraulic conductance (K L) and bulk modulus of elasticity (ε) were determined. The observed wide range of water relations and stomatal characteristics was found to be partially depended on the growth form. Maximum g s was related to StoD and the stomatal area index (SAI), while g s evolution after water stress and recovery was highly correlated with K L. Relationships between SR to water deficit and other morphological leaf traits, such as StoD, LMA or ε, provided no general correlations when including all species. It is concluded that a high variability is present among Mediterranean plants reflecting a continuum of leaf water relations and stomatal behaviour in response to water stress.  相似文献

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica) is a recognised health-promoting vegetable, which is moderately sensitive to salinity. In this study, the primary response of broccoli plants (cv. Marathon) to salinity has been characterised. For this, leaf water relations, nutrient composition, root hydraulic conductivity (L 0) and the effect of mercury (an aquaporin blocker) on L 0 were determined for plants grown with 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100 mM NaCl for 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks of treatment, the plants showed a two-phase growth response to salinity. During the first phase (1 week), growth reduction was high, probably related to water stress as no osmotic adjustment occurred and reductions of L 0, the mercury effect and Gs were observed. After 2 weeks, the growth reduction could have resulted from internal injury caused by Na+ or Cl, since osmotic adjustment was achieved and water relations plus the mercury effect were re-established to a high degree, indicating high aquaporin functionality. The fact that aquaporin functionality fits well with the overall water relations response is very relevant, since the two-phase adaptation to salinity may imply two types of aquaporin regulation.  相似文献

We study the final size equation for an epidemic in a subdivided population with general mixing patterns among subgroups. The equation is determined by a matrix with the same spectrum as the next generation matrix and it exhibits a threshold controlled by the common dominant eigenvalue, the basic reproduction number R0{\mathcal{R}_{0}}: There is a unique positive solution giving the size of the epidemic if and only if R0{\mathcal{R}_{0}} exceeds unity. When mixing heterogeneities arise only from variation in contact rates and proportionate mixing, the final size of the epidemic in a heterogeneously mixing population is always smaller than that in a homogeneously mixing population with the same basic reproduction number R0{\mathcal{R}_{0}}. Conclusion People are seldom able to account for the meanings implied in the particulars of the rituals, but the most important element in the interaction with the saint seems to be of a reciprocal character-exchange of gifts for miracles or protection. The saint cult can be seen as part of a total social phenomenon which articulates the symmetrical reciprocity in the interpersonal relationships in the social structure and asymmetrical relationships in the clientela system. The feasts amount to a popular gathering with multiple functions where all the activities that are being performed renew and confirm networks that constitute village solidarity. The saint cult also joins all these functions and meanings in a complex cultural-personal metaphor that relates expressions of reciprocity as instances of the underlying forms of the society.The saint cult does not merely express a metaphor.A metaphor uses imagery from one domain or level of experience to illuminate relationships, objects and processes in a different domain or at a different level. It follows from this that the domain of thought or experience which is being explicated by metaphor is that which metaphor is used to illuminate, not that from which the idioms of metaphor is fetched .There is also a formal similarity between the gift-giving to a patron saint and to a profane patron. But the rituals in the saint cults do not account for a divine justification of the order in the substantial world. On the contrary, the rituals of the saint cults use a known and common language of reciprocity to get hold of a difficult and inexplicable world. I thus argue that the rituals of the saint cults use idioms similar to the profane political and social relations to express the quality of the relationship between saint and devotee, but this in no way implies that the two domains are substantively confounded. The forms are part of the same world view that emphasizes reciprocity as the basis for social solidarity; receiving evokes obligations for return giving, a favor for a gift. Ritual is not a substitute for the world or displacement of action in it; it is part of, an expression of, a world articulated by those values/views of reciprocity. Consequently, the saint cults which have been analyzed here do not represent an alternative to political or other activities, but a continuation and a completion of that activity into the total means by which one seeks goals in a world so conceived.Mia Di Tota is associated with the Ethnographic Museum at the University of Oslo.

Photosynthesis in the green alga Dunaliella tertiolecta, as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence, is inhibited by ultraviolet radiation and specifically, under the conditions used, by UVB radiation (UVBR). The decline in the fluorescence parameters Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm' under constant UVBR is a first-order function of time of exposure. The data are well-described by the Kok (1956) model, which assumes a dynamic interaction between damage and repair, with repair being proportional to the pool size of inactivated targets. The pattern of photoinhibition is also consistent with the Kok model, in that it shows an initial, approximately linear phase which is time-dependent (reciprocity holds), a transition phase and then an asymptotic phase, representing an equilibrium between damage and repair, which is determined by UVBR fluence rate (reciprocity fails). Photoinhibition in the presence of lincomycin, a protein synthesis inhibitor, is consistent with the cessation of repair processes and, under these conditions, photoinhibition is proportional to exposure time. Increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations are expected to lead to increases in the rate of tree biomass accumulation, at least temporarily. On the one hand, trees may simply grow faster under higher CO2 concentrations, preserving the allometric relations that prevailed under lower CO2 concentrations. Alternatively, the allometric relations themselves may change. In this study, the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) on tree biomass and allometric relations were jointly assessed. Over 100 trees, grown at Duke Forest, NC, USA, were harvested from eight plots. Half of the plots had been subjected to CO2 enrichment from 1996 to 2010. Several subplots had also been subjected to nitrogen fertilization from 2005 to 2010. Allometric equations were developed to predict tree height, stem volume, and aboveground biomass components for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.), the dominant tree species, and broad‐leaved species. Using the same diameter‐based allometric equations for biomass, it was estimated that plots with eCO2 contained 21% more aboveground biomass, consistent with previous studies. However, eCO2 significantly affected allometry, and these changes had an additional effect on biomass. In particular, P. taeda trees at a given diameter were observed to be taller under eCO2 than under ambient CO2 due to changes in both the allometric scaling exponent and intercept. Accounting for allometric change increased the treatment effect of eCO2 on aboveground biomass from a 21% to a 27% increase. No allometric changes for the nondominant broad‐leaved species were identified, nor were allometric changes associated with nitrogen fertilization. For P. taeda, it is concluded that eCO2 affects allometries, and that knowledge of allometry changes is necessary to accurately compute biomass under eCO2. Further observations are needed to determine whether this assessment holds for other taxa.  相似文献

The cooperativity in hemoglobin can be described by the Hill parameter n, the free energy of interaction ΔF1 and the allosteric free energy ΔFA. By this latter is meant here the free energy change associated with the transition from the deoxy to the oxy conformation in hemoglobin. In this paper some general relations between n, ΔF1 and ΔFA are given. A method is presented by which ΔFA can be calculated from oxygenation data.  相似文献

Fluctuations in backbone dihedral angles in the α-helical conformation of homopolypeptides are studied based on an assumption that the conformational energy function of a polypeptide consisting of n amino-acid residues can be approximated by a 2n-dimensional parabola around the minimum point in the range of fluctuations. A formula is derived that relates 〈ΔθiΔθj〉, the mean value of the product of deviations of dihedral angles ?i and ψi (collectively designated by θi) from their energy minimum values, with a matrix inverse to the second derivative matrix F ,n of the conformational energy function at the minimum point. A method of calculating the inverse matrix F n?1 explicitly is given. The method is applied to calculating 〈ΔθiΔθj〉 for the α-helices of poly(L -alanine) and polyglycine. The autocorrelations 〈(Δ?i)2〉 and 〈(Δψi)2〉 at 300°K are found to be about 66 deg2 and 49 deg2, respectively, for poly(L -alanine), and 84 deg2 and 116 deg2, respectively, for polyglycine. The length of correlations of fluctuations along the chain is found for both polypeptides to be about eight residues long.  相似文献

The basic relations between the molar fractions and the scanning calorimetry data for the system that includes self-dissociation/association process such as are presented, where mi is the stoichiometric coefficient of the ith state Ai. The relations are described for each state j as where fj(T) is the molar fraction function of state j and ΔHj(T) is the difference enthalpy function of the system referred to the state j, which can be obtained by scanning calorimetry; R is the gas constant; and T is the absolute temperature. By these relations, scanning calorimetry data can be deconvoluted in order to determine the thermodynamic functions by means of single and double deconvolution. The concentration dependence of the data is analyzed by a method presented in this paper. The nonlinear least squares fitting method for the determination of the functions is discussed. For an example of the application of this method to the actual scanning calorimetry data, thermodynamic data of multistate thermal transition of Vibrio parahaemolyticus hemolysin are analyzed.  相似文献
