Comparative studies on the effect of nitrogen (N) form on iron (Fe) uptake and distribution in maize (Zea mays L. cv Yellow 417) were carried out through three related experiments with different pretreatments. Experiment 1: plants were precultured in nutrient solution with 1.0×10–4 M FeEDTA for 6 d and then exposed to NO3–N or NH4–N solution with 1.0×10–4 M FeEDTA or without for 7 d. Experiment 2: plants were precultured with 59FeEDTA for 6 d and were then transferred to the solution with different N forms, and 0 and 1.0×10–4 M FeEDTA for 8 d. Experiment 3: half of roots were supplied with 59FeEDTA for 5 d and then cut off, with further culturing in treatment concentrations for 7 d. In comparison to the NH4-fed plants, young leaves of the NO3-fed plants showed severe chlorosis under Fe deficiency. Nitrate supply caused Fe accumulation in roots, while NH4–N supply resulted in a higher Fe concentration in young leaves and a lower Fe concentration in roots. HCl-extractable (active) Fe was a good indicator reflecting Fe nutrition status in maize plants. Compared with NO3-fed plants, a higher proportion of 59Fe was observed in young leaves of the Fe-deficient plants fed with NH4–N. Ammonium supply greatly improved 59Fe retranslocation from primary leaves and stem to young leaves. Under Fe deficiency, about 25% of Fe in primary leaves of the NH4-fed plants was mobilized and retranslocated to young leaves. Exogenous Fe supply decreased the efficiency of such 59Fe retranslocation. The results suggest that Fe can be remobilized from old to young tissues in maize plants but the remobilization depends on the form of N supply as well as supply of exogenous Fe.  相似文献

Summary Dry-matter accumulation, and concentration and uptake of nitrogen increased with increasing level of nitrogen at all the stages of crop growth. The differences in nitrogen concentration due to nitrogen levels were greatest at panicle initiation stage and started becoming narrower with the advancement in crop age. Split application of nitrogen with its heavier fractions at tillering and panicle initiation stages either through soil alone or soil+foliage (1/3+1/3+1/3) resulted in higher dry-matter accumulation, and higher nitrogen concentration and uptake than other methods. The crop, on an average, removed 61 kg N/ha. Plants accumulated nearly 15% of the total absorbed nitrogen, up to tillering, 50% up to panicle initiation and 85–90% up to heading. Proportionately lesser nitrogen uptake and dry-matter accumulation at post-heading stage is an indicative of a major constraint for production efficiency of rainfed-upland rice culture.  相似文献

Summary Nitrogen (N) accumulation data from a replicated field study were fitted to a tanh (time) function and the derivate obtained to determine relative maximum rates of accumulation by maize. Both positive and negative effects of tillage on N accumulation rates were observed. Most of the N accumulation occurred over a 30-day period and time of N accumulation was not affected by tillage. Tilled profiles tend to contain greater NO3–N, greater aeration, and lower moisture contents than untilled profiles, and these characteristics interact to affect plant N accumulation.  相似文献

Growth analysis of maize field crops under phosphorus deficiency   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6

Biomass accumulation by crops depends both on light interception by leaves and on the efficiency with which the intercepted light is used to produce dry matter. Our aim was to identify which of these processes were affected for maize (Zea Mays L., cv Volga) field crops grown under phosphorus (P) deficiency, and assess their relative importance. In this paper, the effects of P deficiency on leaf appearance, leaf elongation rate, final individual leaf area and leaf senescence were studied. The experimental work was carried out in 1995–1977 on a long-term P fertilisation trial located on a sandy soil in the south-west of France. Three P fertilisation regimes have been applied since 1972: no-P (P0 treatment) and different rates of P fertiliser (P1.5:1.5 times the grain P export and P3:3 times the grain P export). These fertilisation regimes have led to contrasted levels of soil P supply, with the P0 treatment being limiting for growth. Very few differences were observed about leaf growth between the P1.5 and P3 treatments. Conversely, the leaf area index (LAI) was significantly reduced in the P0 treatment, especially during the first phases of the crop cycle (up to −60% between the 7- and 14-visible leaves). This effect gradually decreased over time. The lower LAI in P0 treatment was due to two main processes affecting the leaf growth. The final number of leaves per plant and leaf senescence were only slightly modified by P deficiency. Conversely, leaf appearance was delayed during the period between leaf 4 and leaf 9. The value of the phyllochron increased from 47 °C days in the P1.5 treatment to 65 °C days in the P0 treatment. Leaf elongation rates during the quasi-linear phase of leaf expansion were significantly reduced for lower leaves of P0 plants. The final size of leaves L2–L12 was reduced. On the opposite, leaf elongation duration was not greatly affected by P treatments. Before the emergence of leaf 9, the reduction of individual leaf size was the main factor responsible for the reduced LAI in the P0 treatment. After this stage, the delayed leaf appearance accounted for a great part of the reduced LAI in the P0 treatment. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary The economic feasibility of using cultures of nitrogen fixing microorganisms in programmes to increase crop production, as a selfgenerating source of nitrogen, has been proved beyond doubtviz. Legume-Rhizobium symbiosis and blue green algal ‘fertilizer’ for rice. The extent to which the free living, N-fixing, aerobic, heterotropicAzotobacter chroococcum could replace the application of nitrogenous fertilizer to maize was investigatedin vivo. Total nitrogen uptake (kg ha−1) by maize after inoculation with Azotobacter combined with moderate applications of nitrogen fertilizer and farmyard manure was influenced significantly and resulted in a higher nitrogen concentration in grain and stover along with a higher yield. Young maize (Zea mays L.) plants, 7 days after germination were exposed to nutrient solutions which were either aerated or not aerated for 14 days. Nutrients were supplied as 50% strength Hoagland’s solution or, in the case of the four ‘low nutrient’ treatments, N, P, K or Ca were supplied at the equivalent of 10% strength Hoagland’s solution. Shoot fresh weight was decreased by 25% due to lack of aeration; O2 deficiency also impaired leaf elongation but not dry weights, suggesting that lack of O2 in the roots impaired cell expansion in shoots more than dry weight accumulation. The distribution of N, P, K and Ca within shoots was consistent with their relative mobilities in the phloem; at least 7% of Ca in plants after 14 days of treatments was found in the oldest leaf whereas N, P and K were rapidly remobilised to younger tissues. Between 33 and 49% of the total N, P and K in the shoot was found in the 40 mm of tissue at the base of the growing leaves in plants grown for 14 days at low nutrient concentrations. Concentrations (dry weight basis) of phloem-mobile nutrients were also greatest in the growing zones of the leaves, especially in the case of N and P. Calcium, on the other hand, was found in relatively low concentrations in the youngest tissue and as with the other nutrients, concentrations declined due to low external supply, non-aeration or a combination of both. In spite of the failure of Ca to move from old to young leaves, the effect of the deficiencies of N, P and K was probably as severe as that of Ca in the youngest tissues of treated plants. Calcium uptake by the whole shoot appeared to be slightly less sensitive to O2 deficits than that of N, P and K. This compensated for the failure of Ca to move to growing tissues during periods of low external Ca supply.  相似文献

Understanding of the mechanisms of Mn supply from the soil and uptake by the plants can be improved by using simulation models that are based on basic principles. For this, a pot culture experiment was conducted with a sandy clay loam soil to measure Mn uptake by summer wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Planet), maize (Zea mays L. cv. Pirat) and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. cv. Orbis) and to simulate Mn dynamics in the rhizosphere by means of a mechanistic model. Seeds of three crops were sown in pots containing 2.9 kg soil in a controlled growth chamber. Root and shoot weight, Mn content of plants, root length and root radius were determined 8 (13 days in case of sugar beet) and 20 days after germination. Soil and plant parameters were determined to run nutrient uptake model calculations. Manganese content of the shoot varied from 25 mg kg-1 for sugar beet to 34 mg kg-1 for maize. Sugar beet had the lowest root length/shoot weight ratio but the highest relative shoot growth rate, resulting in the highest shoot demand on the root. This is reflected by the Mn influx which was 0.9 × 10-7, 1.7 × 10-7 and 2.5 × 10-7 nmol cm-1 s-1 for wheat, maize and sugar beet, respectively. Nutrient uptake model calculations predicted similar influx values. Initial Mn concentration of 0.2 μM in the soil solution decreased to only 0.16 μM for wheat, 0.13 μM for maize and 0.11 μM for sugar beet at the root surface. This shows that manganese transport to the root was not a limiting step. This was confirmed by the fact that an assumed 20 times increase in maximum influx (Imax) increased the calculated Mn influx by 3.7 times. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that for controlling Mn uptake the initial soil solution concentration (C Li), the root radius (r0), Imax and the Michaelis constant (K m) were the most sensitive factors in the listed order. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Biomass accumulation by crops depends on both light interception by leaves and on the efficiency with which the intercepted light is used to produce dry matter. Our aim was to identify which of these processes were affected for maize (Zea mays L., cv Volga) field crops grown under phosphorus (P) deficiency. In the preceding paper (Plénet et al., 2000), it was shown that P deficiency severely reduced leaf growth. In this paper, the effect of P deficiency on the radiation-use efficiency (RUE) was investigated. The experimental work was carried out in 1995, 1996 and 1997 on a long-term P fertilisation trial located on a sandy soil in the south-west of France. Three P fertilisation regimes have been applied since 1972: no- P (P0 treatment) and different rates of P fertiliser (P1.5: 1.5 times the grain P export and P3: 3 times the grain P export). These fertilisation regimes have led to contrasted levels of soil P supply. Only slight differences were observed between the P1.5 and P3 treatment for above-ground biomass accumulation and grain yield. Conversely the grain yield was significantly reduced in P0 (–11%). Above-ground biomass production was severely reduced, with the maximum difference between treatment (–60% in P0) occurring between 400 and 600 °C days after sowing. The lower biomass production in P0 was accounted for by the reduced amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) absorbed by the canopy, which was itself the consequence of the reduced leaf area index (see Plénet et al., 2000). The calculated RUE were found to depend on the plant stage, especially during the pre-flowering period, and on the average air temperature. No effect of P deficiency was observed on the calculated RUE, even during the period when above-ground biomass accumulation was the most severely reduced. These results obtained in field crop conditions strengthen the idea that P deficiency affects plant growth, especially leaf growth, earlier and to a greater extent than photosynthesis per unit leaf area.  相似文献

Mineral nutrition and growth of tropical maize as affected by soil acidity   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Soil constraints linked to low pH reduce grain yield in about 10% of the maize growing area in tropical developing countries. The aim of this research was to elucidate the reasons for this maize yield reduction on an oxisol of Guadeloupe. The field experiment had two treatments: the native non-limed soil (NLI, pH 4.5, 2.1 cmol Al kg–1, corresponding to 20% Al saturation), and the same soil limed 6 years prior to the experiment (LI, pH 5.3, 0 cmol Al kg–1). The soils were fertilized with P and N. The above-ground biomass, root biomass at flowering, grain yield and yield components, leaf area index (LAI), light interception, radiation-use-efficiency (RUE), P and N uptake, soil water storage, and soil mineral N were measured during the maize cycle. The allometric relationships between shoot N concentration, LAI and above-ground biomass in LI were similar to those reported for maize cropped in temperate regions, indicating that these relationships are also useful to describe maize growth on tropical soils without Al toxicity. In NLI, soil acidity severely affected leaf appearance, leaf size and consequently the LAI, which was reduced by 60% at flowering, although the RUE was not affected. Therefore, the reduction in the above-ground biomass (30% at flowering) and grain yield (47%) were due to the lower LAI and light interception. At flowering, the root/shoot ratio was 0.25 in NLI and 0.17 in LI, and the root biomass in NLI was reduced by 64% compared to LI. Nitrogen uptake was also reduced in NLI in spite of high soil N availability. Nevertheless, shoot N concentration vs aboveground biomass showed a typical decline in both treatments. In NLI, the shoot P concentration vs above-ground biomass relationship showed an increase in the early stages, indicating that P uptake and root-shoot competition for the absorbed P in the early plant stages controlled the establishment and the development of the leaf area.  相似文献

The first objective of this study was to map and characterize quantitative trait loci (QTL) for grain yield (GY) and for secondary traits under varying nitrogen (N) supply. To achieve this objective, a segregating F2:3 population previously developed for QTL mapping under water-limited conditions was used. The population was evaluated in Mexico under low N conditions in the dry winter season and under low and high N conditions in the wet summer season. From eight QTLs identified for GY under low N conditions, two were also detected under high N conditions. Five QTLs were stable across the two low N environments and five co-localized with QTLs identified for the anthesis-silking interval (ASI) or for the number of ears per plant (ENO) under low N conditions. The percentage of the phenotypic variance expressed by all QTLs for ASI and ENO was quite different when evaluated under low N conditions during the dry winter (40% for ASI and 22% for ENO) and the wet summer seasons (22% for ASI and 46% for ENO). The results suggest optimizing different breeding strategies based on selection index depending on the growing season. Good QTL colocalization was observed for ASI (four QTLs) and ENO (three QTLs) when looking at QTL identified under low N and water-limited conditions in the same population. The results suggest that that both secondary traits can be used in breeding programs for simultaneous improvement of maize against low N and drought stresses.  相似文献

Two maize genotypes differing in leaf elongation rate (high-LER and low-LER) were used for the investigation of the effects of nitrogen deficiency on leaf growth and development and activity of enzyme cell wall peroxidase in the leaf growth zone. Plants were grown in a growth cabinet in perlite as a substrate and watered with complete N-NO3 solution (+N) and N-NO3 deficient solution (–N). Comparison between the investigated genotypes showed that final leaf length in both N treatments was related with LER, but not with the duration of leaf elongation. Faster leaf elongation rate in high-LER compared with low-LER genotype, was associated with longer growth zone, a bigger number of cells in it, and higher cell flux rate, although cell elongation rate was similar in both genotypes. These lines of evidence indirectly indicated that leaves of the faster growing genotype were characterized by higher meristematic activity. Nitrogen deficiency reduced the flux of cells and cell elongation rate, length of cell division zone and the number of cells in whole zone, significantly for both genotypes, although duration of cell elongation was increased and final epidermal cell length was unchanged. These results showed that N deficiency reduced both cell division and cell elongation, which in turn resulted in decreased leaf length and prolonged time for leaf development. Nitrogen deficiency significantly increased both bulk and segmental cell wall peroxidase activity in the growth zone of both investigated genotypes, thus showing an interaction between leaf growth cessation and enzyme activity.  相似文献

Little information exists on the pattern of nitrogen (N) uptake, remobilization and N use efficiency (NUE) in Leafy and stay-green (SG) maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes. A pot experiment was conducted under controlled nutrition and growing conditions to determine the response of Leafy and SG maize genotypes to different levels of N-deficiency and timing of N supply. Three contrasting maize hybrids, Pioneer 3905 (a conventional hybrid with moderate SG characteristics), Pioneer 39F06 Bt (with a high score of SG trait) and Maizex LF850-RR (with a Leafy trait) were grown in 6 L plastic pots. Five different N treatments [no supply of N until V8 (N1), no supply of N after V8 (N2), no supply of N after silking (N3), no supply of N beyond 3 weeks after silking (N4), and continuous N supply from emergence to physiological maturity (N5; standard check)] were imposed through modified Hoagland solution applied manually. Labeled 15N of 5% 15N2–NH4NO3fertilizer was applied at 3 g per pot at the start of each schedule N treatment. Total amounts of N applied in different treatments were 3.13, 1.32, 1.90, 2.63 and 3.40 g, respectively in N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. Dry matter, N concentration, 15N (atom% enrichment) and NUE were determined in roots, stalk, leaves and grains at crop maturity. The three contrasting hybrids did not differ in grain yield, total N acquisition, partitioning of 15N and NUE. Restriction of N supply until V8, and from V8 to physiological maturity significantly reduced grain yield and N-uptake in all hybrids. Irrespective of the level of N-deficiency in plant and timing when the labeled fertilizer was applied, the amount of 15N recovered in the matured plant was the same in all N treatments. It has been evident that maize continued to take up N beyond 3 weeks after silking and the later N was applied during the development, the higher proportion of it was partitioned to grains. Of the total 15N uptake, 78% was partitioned to kernels in the N4 treatment compared to only 61% in the control. Our data showed no evidence of differential N uptake, remobilization and NUE in the SG or Leafy hybrids tested, but the timing of N application and level of N-deficiency in plant significantly influenced N uptake, remobilization and N-dynamics in maize.  相似文献

Two hybrids of maize (Zea mays L.) differing in resistance to drought, were grown in chernozem soil in a greenhouse and were fertilized with two different forms of nitrogen: Ca(NO3)2 and (NH4)2SO4 in concentrations corresponding to 100 kg of N ha-1. After emergence of the 4th leaf, plants were exposed to drought. During the drought period, the parameters of plant water status (water potential, osmotic potential, turgor pressure and relative water content) and chlorophyll a+b concentration were monitored every two days. N and K concentration and accumulation over the drought period were also monitored.Next to differences in adaptability of the two hybrids to drought, the results demonstrate different adaptability of NH4 and NO3-treated plants within each hybrid. NH4-plants of each hybrid maintain higher turgor pressure during the drought by better osmotic adaptation. Especially significant differences appear between chlorophyll (a+b) values of NH4 and NO3-treated plants and as affected by drought. Chlorophyll concentrations of NH4-plants are higher than those of NO3-plants both in control and droughted plants. NH4 plants show a characteristic initial chlorophyll increase at the beginning of the drought period while in NO3 plants chlorophyll constantly decreases throughout the whole drought period. The influence of the nitrogen form on chlorophyll concentration changes during drought does not appear to be affected by regulation of the K concentration.  相似文献

The effect of amino acids on nitrate transport was studied in Zea mays cell suspension cultures and in Zea mays excised roots. The inclusion of aspartic acid, arginine, glutamine and glycine (15mM total amino acids) in a complete cell-culture media containing 1.0 mM NO3 - strongly inhibited nitrate uptake and the induction of accelerated uptake rates. The nitrate uptake rate increased sharply once solution amino acid levels fell below detection limits. Glutamine alone inhibited induction in the cell suspension culture. Maize seedlings germinated and grown for 7 days in a 15 mM mixture of amino acids also had lower nitrate uptake rates than seedlings grown in 0.5 mM Ca(NO3)2 or 1 mM CaCl2. As amino acids are the end product of nitrate assimilation, the results suggest an end-product feed-back mechanism for the regulation of nitrate uptake.  相似文献

Summary When roots of five day-old maize seedlings were exposed to15N-nitrate, a constant (25–29%) proportion of the reduced15N derived from the entering15N-nitrate accumulated as insoluble15N nitrogen. Constancy was established by two hours and lasted through 12 hours at ambient15N-nitrate concentrations of 0.05 mM to 20.0 mM. Even when little15N nitrate had been reduced (<2 moles), there was a linear relationship between accumulation of insoluble15N (but not accumulation or translocation of soluble reduced15N) and total reduced15N. It is proposed that protein synthesis from the entering nitrate occurs in close association with nitrate reduction.Paper No. 9764 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, Raleigh, NC, 27695-7619, USA. Summary White clover (Trifolium repens L.) plants grown in pots and supplied with the same concentration x days of15N labelled nitrate, but in contrasting patterns and doses had similar N concentrations but differed in the proportions devived from N2 fixation and nitrate. N2-fixation and nodule dry weight responded rapidly (2–3 days) to changes in nitrate availability. Plants exposed frequently to small doses of nitrate took up more nitrate (and hence relied less on N2-fixation) and had greater dry weights and shoot: root ratios than those exposed to larger doses less often. In mixed ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)/clover communities clover's ability to either successfully compete for nitrate or fix N2 gave it consistently higher N concentrations than grass whether they were given high or low nitrate nutrient. This higher N concentration was accompanied by greater dry weights than grass in the low nitrate swards but not where high levels of nitrate were applied.  相似文献

Inhibition of nitrate uptake by aluminium in maize   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experiments with two maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids were conducted to determine (a) if the inhibition of nitrate uptake by aluminium involved a restriction in the induction (synthesis/assemblage) of nitrate transporters, and (b) if the magnitude of the inhibition was affected by the concurrent presence of ambient ammonium. At pH 4.5, the rate of nitrate uptake from 240 μM NH4NO3 was maximally inhibited by 100 μM aluminium, but there was little measurable effect on the rate of ammonium uptake. Presence of ambient aluminium did not eliminate the characteristic induction pattern of nitrate uptake upon first exposure of nitrogen-depleted seedlings to that ion. Removal of ambient aluminium after six hours of induction resulted in recovery within 30 minutes to rates of nitrate uptake that were similar to those of plants induced in absence of aluminium. Addition of aluminium to plants that had been induced in absence of aluminium rapidly restricted the rate of nitrate uptake to the level of plants that had been induced in the presence of aluminium. The data are interpreted as indicating that aluminium inhibited the activity of nitrate transporters to a greater extent than the induction of those transporters. When aluminium was added at initiation of induction, the effect of ambient ammonium on development of the inhibition by aluminium differed between the two hybrids. The responses indicate a complex interaction between the aluminium and ammonium components of high acidity soils in their influence on nitrate uptake. ei]{gnA C}{fnBorstlap}  相似文献

Endomycorrhizal fungi in nitrogen transfer from soybean to maize   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Using 15N as a tracer, interspecific N-transfer was studied during the course of plant development. The use of barriers of differing permeabilities between donor and receiver plants allowed separation of the effect of mycorrhizal colonization, root or hyphal contact and interplant hyphal bridging, on 15N-transfer from soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) to maize (Zea mays L.). More transfer was measured between mycorrhizal plants, but transport of 15N from the labelled host plant to Glomus versiforme (Karsten) Berch did not seem to occur at the symbiotic interface, suggesting that the fungus is independent of its host for its N-nutrition, and that the role of hyphal bridges in N-transfer between plants, is not significant. Uptake by the receiver plant of the N excreted by the donor plant root system appears to be the mechanism of N-transfer between plants. The factor most affecting 15N-transfer between plants was found to be the extent of the contact between plant root systems. The presence of the endomycorrhizal fungus in plant roots reduced 15N-loss from soybean, but at the same time, its extensive hyphal network improved the efficiency of the maize root system for the recovery of the 15N excreted by soybeans. The net result was a better conservation of the N resource within the plant system. The transfer of N between mycorrhizal plants was particularly enhanced by the death of the soybean.  相似文献
