The aim of the study was to evaluate an automatic thermographic software package (ThermoHuman®) for assessing skin temperature on the soles of the feet before and after running and to compare it with two manual definitions of the regions of interest (ROIs). 120 thermal images of the soles of the feet of 30 participants, at two measurement points (before and after running 30 min) and on two measurement days were analyzed. Three different models of thermographic image analyses were used to obtain the mean temperature of 9 ROIs: A) ThermoHuman (automatic definition of ROIs using ThermoHuman® software), B) Manual (manual delimitation of ROIs by proportion criteria), and C) Manual-TH (manual delimitation of ROIs in an attempt to replicate the regions analyzed by ThermoHuman). ThermoHuman resulted in an 86% reduction in time involved compared to manual delimitation. Fourteen of the 120 images (12%) presented some error in one or more of the ROI delimitations. Although the three procedures presented significant differences between them (53% in the comparison between ThermoHuman and Manual, 47% between ThermoHuman and Manual-TH, and 28% between Manual and Manual-TH), all differences had a small effect size (ES 0.2–0.4) or lower (ES < 0.2). Bland-Altman plots showed similar 95% limits of agreement between the three procedures before and after running. Intraclass correlation coefficient analysis of the three procedures presented excellent reliability (ICC>0.8). In conclusion, ThermoHuman® software was observed to be time-saving for image analysis with excellent reliability. Although results suggest that ThermoHuman® and manual methods are both valid in themselves, combining them is not recommended due to the differences observed between them. 相似文献

Leaf temperature has been shown to vary when plants are subjected to water stress conditions. Recent advances in infrared thermography have increased the probability of recording drought tolerant responses more accurately. The aims of this study were to identify the effects of drought on leaf temperature using infrared thermography. Furthermore, the genomic regions responsible for the expression of leaf temperature variation in maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) were explored. The maize inbred lines Zong3 and 87-1 were evaluated using infrared thermography and exhibited notable differences in leaf temperature response to water stress. Correlation analysis indicated that leaf temperature response to water stress played an integral role in maize biomass accumulation. Additionally, a mapping population of 187 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between Zong3 and 87-1 was constructed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) responsible for physiological traits associated with seedling water stress. Leaf temperature differences (LTD) and the drought tolerance index (DTI) of shoot fresh weight (SFW) and shoot dry weight (SDW) were the traits evaluated for QTL analysis in maize seedlings. A total of nine QTL were detected by composite interval mapping (CIM) for the three traits (LTD, RSFW and RSDW). Two co-locations responsible for both RSFW and RSDW were detected on chromosomes 1 and 2, respectively, which showed common signs with their trait correlations. Another co-location was detected on chromosome 9 between LTD and shoot biomass, which provided genetic evidence that leaf temperature affects biomass accumulation. Additionally, the utility of a thermography system for drought tolerance breeding in maize was discussed. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of moderate treadmill exercise session on body surface and core temperature in dog measured by means of two infrared instruments. Ten Jack Russell Terrier/Miniature Pinscher mixed-breed dogs were subjected to 15 min of walking, 10 min of trotting and 10 min of gallop. At every step, body surface temperature (Tsurface) was measured on seven regions (neck, shoulder, ribs, flank, back, internal thigh and eye) using two different methods, a digital infrared camera (ThermaCam P25) and a non-contact infrared thermometer (Infrared Thermometer THM010-VT001). Rectal temperature (Trectal) and blood samples were collected before (T0) and after exercise (T3). Blood samples were tested for red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct). A significant effect of exercise in all body surface regions was found, as measured by both infrared methods. The temperature obtained in the eye and the thigh area were higher with respect to the other studied regions throughout the experimental period (P<0.0001). RBC, Hb, Hct and Trectal values were higher at T3 (P<0.05). Statistically significant higher temperature values measured by infrared thermometer was found in neck, shoulder, ribs, flank, back regions respect to the values obtained by digital infrared camera (P<0.0001). The results obtained in this study showed that both internal and surface temperatures are influenced by physical exercise probably due to muscle activity and changes in blood flow in dogs. Both infrared instruments used in this study have proven to be useful in detecting surface temperature variations of specific body regions, however factors including type and color of animal hair coat must be taken into account in the interpretation of data obtained by thermography methodology. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate skin temperature of the soles of the feet before and after a provoked asymmetrical running. Seventeen recreational male runners performed two 15 min running tests in the same session. In the first test, participants performed running without modifying their running technique (control condition). In the second running test, they repeated the same protocol using an ankle weight of 1.5 kg in the non-dominant ankle (asymmetrical condition). Rate of perceive exertion, heart rate and spatio-temporal parameters were measured during the running tests. Skin temperature was measured with an infrared camera before and after each condition. Generally, comparing both lower limbs, non-preferred limb (with the ankle weight) had lower contact time (p < 0.001 and ES > 0.8), higher stride length (p < 0.05 and ES > 0.3) and higher stride frequency in asymmetrical condition (p < 0.01 and ES > 0.4). However, no differences were observed on skin temperature between both feet in the two conditions in any of the regions of interest assessed (p > 0.05). Although the asymmetry generation model used provoked technical asymmetries in spatio-temporal parameters during running, no thermal asymmetries were observed between preferred and non-preferred sole of the foot. These results suggested the lower importance of mechanical than physiological mechanisms on skin temperature during running. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to establish the skin temperature (Tsk) thermal profile for the Brazilian population and to compare the differences between female and male Brazilian adults. A total of 117 female and 103 male were examined with a thermographic camera. The Tsk of 24 body regions of interest (ROI) were recorded and analyzed. Male Tsk results were compared to female and 10 ROI were evaluated with respect to the opposite side of the body (right vs. left) to identify the existence of significant contralateral Tsk differences (ΔTsk). When compared right to left, the largest contralateral ΔTsk was 0.3 °C. The female vs. male analysis yielded significant differences (p<0.05) in 13 of the 24 ROI. Thigh regions, both ventral and dorsal, had the highest ΔTsk by sex (≈1.0 °C). Tsk percentile below P5 or P10 and over P90 or P95 may be used to characterize hypothermia and hyperthermia states, respectively. Thermal patterns and Tsk tables were established for Brazilian adult men and women for each ROI. There is a low Tsk variation between sides of the body and gender differences were only significant for some ROIs. 相似文献

In female rats, rectal temperature (Tre), tail vasomotor response, oxygen uptake (VO2), and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) were measured in proestrus and estrus stages during treadmill running at two different speeds at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 24 degrees C. Experiments were performed at 2.00-6.00 a.m., when the difference in Tre was greatest between the two stages; Tre at rest in the estrus stage was 0.54 degrees C higher than in the proestrus stage. In a mild warm environment, threshold Tre for a rise in tail skin temperature (Ttail) was also higher in the estrus stage than in the proestrus stage. In contrast, no difference was seen in the threshold Tre and steady state Tre at the end of exercise between proestrus and estrus stages. These values were higher at the higher work intensity. VO2 was also similar between the two stages, except in the second 5 min after the beginning of exercise, when VO2 was greater and Tre rose more steeply in the proestrus stage. These data indicate that deep body temperature during exercise is regulated at a certain level depending on the work intensity and is not influenced by the estrus cycle. 相似文献

Tympanic temperature (Tty), mean skin temperature (Tsk) and dynamics of sweating were measured in male subjects, performing prolonged, bicycle-exercise. The exercise was performed under thermoneutral environment after the normal-mixed (C) and low-carbohydrate (LCHO) diet. No difference in changes of Tty was observed after the C and LCHO diets. Sweating was triggered much faster after the LCHO diet. The delay in onset and inertia time of sweating was shorter after the LCHO diet. It is concluded that LCHO diet affects the thermoregulatory responses to exercise by acceleration of sweating, without noticeable differences in body temperature. 相似文献

Cycles II and III of the Health Examination Survey included measurements of the skinfolds of over 14,000 individuals 6 through 17 years of age, statistically weighted to provide an accurate national probability sample. Analyses of the triceps and subscapular skinfolds of Negroes and whites are reported here, utilizing the median in preference to the mean. Females of either racial group have thicker skinfolds at all ages studied. Whites have greater median triceps thicknesses than Negroes of the same sex and age, but there are no differences between the two racial groups in the subscapular. Since, between all but one pair of adjacent ages in males, from 12 years on, the median triceps fold decreases, but the estimated cross-sectional are of fat increases, it is strongly recommended that reductions in triceps thickness not be automatically interpreted as meaning a loss of subcutaneous fat. Since greater skewness is found in the subscapular distributions in whites, but not in the triceps, it is suggested that racial differences in triceps thickness at these ages occurs from the operation of hereditary factors, while differences in the subscapular skinfold arise from environmental causes. 相似文献

To study the reliabiliity of formulas for calculating mean skin temperature (T
sk), values were computed by 18 different techniques and were compared with the mean of 10,841 skin temperatures measured by
infrared thermography. One hundred whole-body infrared thermograms were scanned in ten resting males while changing the air
temperature from 40° C to 4° C. Local, regional average and mean skin temperatures were obtained using an image processing
system. The agreement frequency, defined as the percentage of the calculated T
sk values which agreed with the corresponding infrared thermographic T
sk within ±0.2° C, ranged for with the various formulas from 7% to 80%. In many sites, the local skin temperature did not coincide
with the regional average skin temperature. When the local skin temperatures which showed the highest percentage similarity
to the regional average skin temperature within ±0.4° C were applied to the formula, the agreement frequency was markedly
improved for all formulas. However, the agreement frequency was not affected by changing the weighting factors from specific
constants to individually measured values of regional surface area. By applying the physiologically reliable accuracy range
of ±0.2° C in the moderate and ±0.4° C in the cool condition, agreement frequencies of at least 95% were observed in formulas
involving seven or more skin temperature measurement sites, including the hand and foot. We conclude that calculation of a
reliable mean skin temperature must involve more than seven skin temperature measurement sites regardless of ambient temperature.
Optimal sites for skin temperature measurement are proposed for various formulas.

Radiation exposure is known to have profound effects on the brain, leading to precursor cell dysfunction and debilitating cognitive declines [Nat. Med. 8 (2002) 955]. Although a plethora of data exist on the effects of high radiation doses, the effects of low-dose irradiation, such as ones received during repetitive diagnostic and therapeutic exposures, are still under-investigated [Am. J. Otolaryngol. 23 (2002) 215; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 97 (2000) 889; Curr. Opin. Neurol. 16 (2003) 129]. Furthermore, most studies of the biological effects of ionizing radiation have been performed using a single acute dose, while clinically and environmentally relevant exposures occur predominantly under chronic/repetitive conditions. Here, we have used a mouse model to compare the effects of chronic/repetitive and acute low-dose radiation (LDR) exposure (0.5Gy) to ionizing radiation on the brain in vivo. We examined the LDR effects on p42/44 MAPK (ERK1/ERK2), CaMKII, and AKT signaling-the interconnected pathways that have been previously shown to be crucial for neuronal survival upon irradiation. We report perturbations in ERK1/2, AKT, and CREB upon acute and chronic/repetitive low-dose exposure in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of mice. These studies were paralleled by the analysis of radiation effects on neurogenesis and cellular proliferation. Repetitive exposure had a much more pronounced effect on cellular signaling and neurogenesis than acute exposure. These results suggest that studies of single acute exposures might be limited in terms of their predictive value. We also present the first evidence of sex differences in radiation-induced signaling in the hippocampus and frontal cortex. We show the role of estrogens in brain radiation responses and discuss the implications of the observed changes. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise on the subsequent post-exercise thresholds for vasoconstriction and shivering measured during water immersion. On 2 separate days, seven subjects (six males and one female) were immersed in water (37.5 degrees C) that was subsequently cooled at a constant rate of approximately 6.5 degrees C x h(-1) until the thresholds for vasoconstriction and shivering were clearly established. Water temperature was then increased to 37.5 degrees C. Subjects remained immersed for approximately 20 min, after which they exited the water, were towel-dried and sat in room air (22 degrees C) until both esophageal temperature and mean skin temperature (Tsk) returned to near-baseline values. Subjects then either performed 15 min of cycle ergometry (at 65% maximal oxygen consumption) followed by 30 min of recovery (Exercise), or remained seated with no exercise for 45 min (Control). Subjects were then cooled again. The core temperature thresholds for both vasoconstriction and shivering increased significantly by 0.2 degrees C Post-Exercise (P < 0.05). Because the Tsk at the onset of vasoconstriction and shivering was different during Pre- and Post-Exercise Cooling, we compensated mathematically for changes in skin temperatures using the established linear cutaneous contribution of skin to the control of vasoconstriction and shivering (20%). The calculated core temperature threshold (at a designated skin temperature of 32.0 degrees C) for vasoconstriction increased significantly from 37.1 (0.3) degrees C to 37.5 ( 0.3) degrees C post-exercise (P < 0.05). Likewise, the shivering threshold increased from 36.2 (0.3) degrees C to 36.5 (0.3) degrees C post-exercise (P < 0.05). In contrast to the post-exercise increase in cold thermal response thresholds, sequential measurements demonstrated a time-dependent similarity in the Pre- and Post-Control thresholds for vasoconstriction and shivering. These data indicate that exercise has a prolonged effect on the post-exercise thresholds for both cold thermoregulatory responses. 相似文献

In order to estimate muscle endurance during knee extension (KME) and plantar flexion (PME) using a simple method, holding times for the half-squatting posture for KME and for the calf-raising posture for PME were measured in 3,792 males and 3,620 females aged between 6 and 79 years. The regression lines of the aging process for KME and PME in both sexes were determined. Peak values were found at 13 years in males and 12 years in females for KME, and at 15 years in males and 16 years in females for PME. The mean values increased sharply with age up to each peak and then decreased abruptly to a low level at around 20 years, thereafter declining gradually. The values of KME as a percentage of the peak value were 71, 75 and 34 at the ages of 6, 20 and 70-79 years respectively in males, while the corresponding values were 80, 77 and 36 for females. The values of PME at these ages were 34, 93 and 69 in males and 54, 91 and 73 in females. The mean values for males were generally higher than those for females. These results suggest that endurance of the leg muscles differs according to age, sex and the region of the leg muscle. These data will be useful as standard values for evaluating endurance and for prescribing suitable exercise for the promotion of physical fitness. 相似文献

Infrared thermography (IRT) was used to assess surface temperature change as an indirect measure of muscle activity and exercise associated changes in blood flow in the working hind limb muscles of horses (n=7) undergoing water treadmill exercise. Three treatments were investigated including the treadmill ran dry (TD), water at the height of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) and water at the height of the carpus (CP). Maximum skin surface temperature was recorded from the region of the semitendinosus muscle during exercise at each water height. There was a significant difference in surface hind limb temperature between exercise on the water treadmill ran dry and with water at the height of the PIP and CP (P<0.0001) with hotter temperatures recorded during the TD treatment. There was a greater increase in surface temperature of the hind limbs from pre exercise to maximum temperature during the PIP and CP treatments when compared to the TD treatment, however, this was not significant (P=0.58). There was no significant difference in surface hind limb temperature found between exercise in water at the height of the PIP and water at the height of the CP. The findings from this study suggest that IRT is able to non-invasively detect muscle activity and associated changes in blood flow whilst horses are exercised on a water treadmill. IRT could potentially be used as an alternative method to assess muscle activity and temperature change in an aquatic environment where existing methods present methodological challenges. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to describe the dependence on ambient temperature of distal joint temperature at the forelimbs of racehorses. The study also investigated the influence of differing ambient temperatures on the temperature difference between joints: this was measured ipsilaterally (i.e. between the carpal and fetlock joints along each forelimb) and contralaterally (i.e. between the same joints of the left and right forelimbs). Sixty-four healthy racehorses were monitored over 10 months. At each session, three thermographic images were taken of the dorsal, lateral and medial aspects of the distal forelimbs. Temperature measurements were made from regions of interest (ROIs) covering the carpal and fetlock joints. There was a strong correlation between ambient temperature and absolute joint temperature at all ROIs. The study also observed a moderate correlation between ambient temperature and the ipsilateral temperature differences between joints when measured from the medial and lateral aspects. No significant correlation was noted when measured dorsally. The mean contralateral temperature differences between joints were all close to 0 °C. The data support previous reports that the temperature distribution between the forelimbs of the healthy equine is generally symmetric, although some horses differ markedly from the average findings. 相似文献

Thermal patterns on the skin are related to skin blood perfusion. While knowledge concerning thermal distribution patterns of the face are well established, the thermal distribution patterns of the skin surface of other aspects of the head has only been investigated once previously in a study employing low resolution thermographic equipment [van Dulken, H., van Voss, S.F.C.H, 1971. The normal thermographic patterns of the human head. Acta Neurochir. 23, 247–58.] The purpose of the study was to re-examine the thermal distribution patterns of the surface of the entire head in 12 healthy bald headed male subjects (mean age 39±7.8 (SD) years) using a high definition infrared (IR) thermographic camera. The thermal distribution patterns were monitored using dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT) before, during and after a 2 min local skin cooling procedure with a pair of fans. Infrared thermal images (thermograms) were taken of the superior, anterior, lateral and posterior aspects of the head. The thermal patterns in general followed the anatomical location of the main superficial arteries and veins of the head as described in anatomy books although there were some variations, especially with regard to the forehead and top of the head (superior aspect), ranging from an asymmetrical distribution pattern to a lack of a clear thermal pattern. The thermal patterns in the left and right lateral thermograms in each individual were relatively symmetrical. During the rewarming period the helix, auricular lobule of the auricles and the nose were relatively cold. The frontal thermograms were characterized by cool nasal and cheek areas and a clear warm area surrounding the eyes, especially around the inner canthus. 相似文献

Validation of an individualised model of human thermoregulation for predicting responses to cold air
van Marken Lichtenbelt WD Frijns AJ van Ooijen MJ Fiala D Kester AM van Steenhoven AA 《International journal of biometeorology》2007,51(3):169-179
Most computer models of human thermoregulation are population based. Here, we individualised the Fiala model [Fiala et al.
(2001) Int J Biometeorol 45:143–159] with respect to anthropometrics, body fat, and metabolic rate. The predictions of the adapted
multisegmental thermoregulatory model were compared with measured skin temperatures of individuals. Data from two experiments,
in which reclining subjects were suddenly exposed to mild to moderate cold environmental conditions, were used to study the
effect on dynamic skin temperature responses. Body fat was measured by the three-compartment method combining underwater weighing
and deuterium dilution. Metabolic rate was determined by indirect calorimetry. In experiment 1, the bias (mean difference)
between predicted and measured mean skin temperature decreased from 1.8°C to −0.15°C during cold exposure. The standard deviation
of the mean difference remained of the same magnitude (from 0.7°C to 0.9°C). In experiment 2 the bias of the skin temperature
changed from 2.0±1.09°C using the standard model to 1.3±0.93°C using individual characteristics in the model. The inclusion
of individual characteristics thus improved the predictions for an individual and led to a significantly smaller systematic
error. However, a large part of the discrepancies in individual response to cold remained unexplained. Possible further improvements
to the model accomplished by inclusion of more subject characteristics (i.e. body fat distribution, body shape) and model
refinements on the level of (skin) blood perfusion, and control functions, are discussed. 相似文献

Individual feed consumption and animal weight were continuously recorded in grower pigs using an automated feeding system. Infrared images were recorded each time a pig entered the feeding system and infrared thermography provided radiated thermal measurements of the dorsal surface of each animal. Feed was withdrawn and the animals fasted for a period of 24 h three times during the growth of the animals at body weights of approximately 35, 65 and 105 kg. There was a significant reduction of 0.28 °C in the maximum surface temperature (Tmax), and 0.48 °C in the average surface temperature (Tmean) during the periods of fasting. Maximum and average pig temperatures exhibited negative correlations to feed consumption and growth variables. There were negative correlations of residual feed intake (RFI) to Tmax and Tmean radiated temperatures. There were positive correlations of residual gain (RG) and residual intake and gain (RIG) with Tmax and Tmean. The Tmax and Tmean temperature responses to fasting were negatively associated with feed consumption and growth variables. Absolute temperature and temperature response variables were positively associated with RFI and negatively associated with residual intake and gain (RIG). These findings provide support for the concept of radiated heat losses as a measure of metabolic activity and a predictor of growth performance. 相似文献

Little is known about the thermoregulatory response of the eland, a tropical animal often raised in temperate climate. We compared the surface temperature (Ts) of the eland with that of similarly sized Holstein–Friesian dairy cattle at three different ambient temperatures (Ta) to get better evidence about thermal response. The Ts of all body areas (neck, dewlap, trunk, body forepart, barrel, body hind part, forelimb and rear limb) did not differ at Ta 29.2 °C, but at Ta 12.5 °C all the areas of the eland (except the neck) had lower mean Ts than those areas in cattle. At Ta 0.4 °C, only the eland dewlap had a lower Ts and the eland neck had a higher Ts than that in cattle. 相似文献
