Mesozoic strata of North Africa yield the first occurrence of the ichnogenus Selenichnites. The trace fossils occur on the top surface of a sandy carbonate deposit in the axis of a Middle Atlas syncline (Skoura Syncline, NE Morocco). The ichnofossil-bearing horizon belongs to the Late Bajocian–Early Bathonian Ich Timellaline/Bou Akrabene Formation. The trace fossils are crescent-shaped and the best preserved exhibits a posterior central axial impression (possible telson tail impression). They are interpreted as feeding burrows (fodinichnia) or hiding depressions of Xiphosurids or Limulids (horseshoe crabs) on a sandy carbonate substrate beneath a veneer of muddy deposits. The sedimentological character suggests a relatively protected shallow water subtidal palaeoenvironment preceding the Bathonian regression of the Atlas domain. This discovery provides the first evidence of xiphosurans or xiphosuran-like organisms inhabiting the southern shores of the Tethys in the Middle Jurassic.  相似文献

The Gargano Promontory, located on the eastern margin of the Apulia Platform, represents a distinctive Tethyan area where the transition from carbonate platform to adjacent basin is exposed on land. The Albian stratigraphic record, represented by shallow-water, slope and deep-water deposits, provides a good opportunity to investigate the regional response to oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) in different depositional settings by using an integrated, high-resolution micropalaeontological (planktonic foraminifers and calcareous nannofossils) approach. Results show that organic matter preservation is confined to the more distal areas (Marne a Fucoidi Formation), and consists of black shale intervals from the middle and late Albian (Ticinella primula/Prediscosphaera columnata Zones; upper Ticinella praeticinensis Subzone/R. achlyostaurion Zone, respectively). Integrated biostratigraphic data correlate the intervals of black shale deposition to the Urbino and Amadeus levels, previously identified and named in the Umbria-Marche Basin. These black shales record the effects of OAEs 1b and 1c. The biotic changes in the pelagic Albian succession of the Apulian Platform Margin provide evidence for episodes of eutrophication that correlate to the deposition of these black shales. Genetic models for the two episodes of organic matter preservation are proposed, taking into account both global and local controlling factors.  相似文献

By about 2.0 billion years ago (Ga), there is evidence for a period best known for its extended, apparent geochemical stability expressed famously in the carbonate–carbon isotope data. Despite the first appearance and early innovation among eukaryotic organisms, this period is also known for a rarity of eukaryotic fossils and an absence of organic biomarker fingerprints for those organisms, suggesting low diversity and relatively small populations compared to the Neoproterozoic era. Nevertheless, the search for diagnostic biomarkers has not been performed with guidance from paleoenvironmental redox constrains from inorganic geochemistry that should reveal the facies that were most likely hospitable to these organisms. Siltstones and shales obtained from drill core of the ca. 1.3–1.4 Ga Roper Group from the McArthur Basin of northern Australia provide one of our best windows into the mid‐Proterozoic redox landscape. The group is well dated and minimally metamorphosed (of oil window maturity), and previous geochemical data suggest a relatively strong connection to the open ocean compared to other mid‐Proterozoic records. Here, we present one of the first integrated investigations of Mesoproterozoic biomarker records performed in parallel with established inorganic redox proxy indicators. Results reveal a temporally variable paleoredox structure through the Velkerri Formation as gauged from iron mineral speciation and trace‐metal geochemistry, vacillating between oxic and anoxic. Our combined lipid biomarker and inorganic geochemical records indicate at least episodic euxinic conditions sustained predominantly below the photic zone during the deposition of organic‐rich shales found in the middle Velkerri Formation. The most striking result is an absence of eukaryotic steranes (4‐desmethylsteranes) and only traces of gammacerane in some samples—despite our search across oxic, as well as anoxic, facies that should favor eukaryotic habitability and in low maturity rocks that allow the preservation of biomarker alkanes. The dearth of Mesoproterozoic eukaryotic sterane biomarkers, even within the more oxic facies, is somewhat surprising but suggests that controls such as the long‐term nutrient balance and other environmental factors may have throttled the abundances and diversity of early eukaryotic life relative to bacteria within marine microbial communities. Given that molecular clocks predict that sterol synthesis evolved early in eukaryotic history, and (bacterial) fossil steroids have been found previously in 1.64 Ga rocks, then a very low environmental abundance of eukaryotes relative to bacteria is our preferred explanation for the lack of regular steranes and only traces of gammacerane in a few samples. It is also possible that early eukaryotes adapted to Mesoproterozoic marine environments did not make abundant steroid lipids or tetrahymanol in their cell membranes.  相似文献

通过野外调查取样和室内培养试验 ,应用Silva和Bremner方法 ,研究了湖南省主要类型稻田土壤的固定态铵含量及其影响因素 .结果表明 ,该省主要类型稻田土壤固定态铵含量为 141~ 35 3mg·kg-1,平均为 2 72± 6 7mg·kg-1,占土壤全N的 11.2 % ,高于湖南省以北各地区土壤和本地区地带性土壤———红壤的固定态铵含量 .其含量的顺序为河沙泥 >紫泥田 >潮沙泥 >黄泥田 >红黄泥 .在土壤剖面中 ,固定态铵含量随剖面深度的变化有 4种情况 :在 1m深度范围内随深度增加而增加 ;随深度增加而减少 ;随深度增加而无明显变化 ;土壤剖面中某一土层固定态铵含量明显增加或减少 .土壤固定态铵含量占土壤全N百分比随深度增加而恒增大 .土壤对NH+ 4的固定作用在 30℃下最强 ,高于 2 0℃和 40℃ ;长期淹水有利于潮沙泥、紫泥田和河沙泥对NH+ 4的固定作用 ,但干湿交替有利于黄泥田对NH+ 4的固定作用 .相关分析表明 ,土壤固定态铵含量仅与 <0 .0 1mm粘粒含量呈P0 .0 5水平的显著正相关 ,与有机质、全N、有机N和 <0 .0 0 1mm粘粒含量的相关性均不显著  相似文献

Conodont elements from Palaeozoic strata (Ordovician, Devonian and Carboniferous) contain abundant evidence for presumed post-mortem colonisation by endolithic organisms. It is possible to distinguish several morphotypes of microcavities in conodont apatite, which show some morphological similarities to microborings in calcareous substrates. Some of them are believed to be produced by microendoliths, some others are yet unknown from calcareous substrates. The present report deals with the various kinds of microendolithic traces in conodont apatite. The significance of microborings in conodont elements is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Major alluvial plains contain large tracts of fine-grained muddy sediments, deposited away from the main river channels, which are mostly classed as overbank or floodplain deposits. Systematic study of the Ganga plain shows that such large tracts of deposition of muddy sediments are located several metres above the major channels, and are not flooded by overtopping of the major river channels. These surfaces are here designated as upland interfluve areas (Doab) where deposition of fine-grained sediments takes place independent of the processes operating in the main channels. The surfaces show distinct depositional domains with characteristic deposits. These include higher sloping surfaces (mottled silt), lower flat surfaces (variegated clayey silt), gulleys (sandy silt), small channels (mottled silty sand), ponds (shelly sandy clayey silt), lakes (shelly clayey silt). These deposits are prone to diagenetic changes, especially the development of calcrete horizons. Redistribution of these domains through time produces characteristic mud-dominant alluvial stratigraphy as observed in the Late Quaternary deposits of the Ganga plain. This succession shows similarity to mud-dominant deposits of the Siwalik succession. These Doab deposits are distinct from the overbank deposits formed close to the river channels affected by channel processes. It is argued that many of the thick mud-dominant fluvial deposits of the ancient fluvial record are products of deposition in upland interfluve areas.  相似文献

A substantial body of evidence suggests that subsurface water masses in mid‐Proterozoic marine basins were commonly anoxic, either euxinic (sulfidic) or ferruginous (free ferrous iron). To further document redox variations during this interval, a multiproxy geochemical and paleobiological investigation was conducted on the approximately 1000‐m‐thick Mesoproterozoic (Lower Riphean) Arlan Member of the Kaltasy Formation, central Russia. Iron speciation geochemistry, supported by organic geochemistry, redox‐sensitive trace element abundances, and pyrite sulfur isotope values, indicates that basinal calcareous shales of the Arlan Member were deposited beneath an oxygenated water column, and consistent with this interpretation, eukaryotic microfossils are abundant in basinal facies. The Rhenium–Osmium (Re–Os) systematics of the Arlan shales yield depositional ages of 1414 ± 40 and 1427 ± 43 Ma for two horizons near the base of the succession, consistent with previously proposed correlations. The presence of free oxygen in a basinal environment adds an important end member to Proterozoic redox heterogeneity, requiring an explanation in light of previous data from time‐equivalent basins. Very low total organic carbon contents in the Arlan Member are perhaps the key—oxic deep waters are more likely (under any level of atmospheric O2) in oligotrophic systems with low export production. Documentation of a full range of redox heterogeneity in subsurface waters and the existence of local redox controls indicate that no single stratigraphic section or basin can adequately capture both the mean redox profile of Proterozoic oceans and its variance at any given point in time.  相似文献

We examined the relative roles of acetogenic and sulfate-reducing bacteria in H2 consumption in a previously characterized subsurface sandstone ecosystem. Enrichment cultures originally inoculated with ground sandstone material obtained from a Cretaceous formation in central New Mexico were grown with hydrogen in a mineral medium supplemented with 0.02% yeast extract. Sulfate reduction and acetogenesis occurred in these cultures, and the two most abundant organisms carrying out the reactions were isolated. Based on 16S rRNA analysis data and on substrate utilization patterns, these organisms were named Desulfomicrobium hypogeium sp. nov. and Acetobacterium psammolithicum sp. nov. The steady-state H2 concentrations measured in sandstone-sediment slurries (threshold concentration, 5 nM), in pure cultures of sulfate reducers (threshold concentration, 2 nM), and in pure cultures of acetogens (threshold concentrations 195 to 414 nM) suggest that sulfate reduction is the dominant terminal electron-accepting process in the ecosystem examined. In an experiment in which direct competition for H2 between D. hypogeium and A. psammolithicum was examined, sulfate reduction was the dominant process.  相似文献

In order to investigate whether or not equivalents to modern calcareous plankton existed in Palaeozoic times, extremely well-preserved successions have to be investigated. The Silurian strata on Gotland (Sweden) are exceptionally well preserved because they have not experienced deep burial conditions and tectonic stress, due to their position on the stable Baltic Shield. Scanning electron microscope investigations of polished, slightly etched rock surfaces revealed the presence of a variety of calcareous micro- and nannofossils. Among these organisms, many can be termed 'calcispheres' (60–100 µm in diameter), whereas others due to their size range (nannofossils) are informally termed herein as 'nannospheres' (10–25 µm in diameter). The systematic attribution of these fossils is unknown ( incertae sedis ). Mesozoic calcispheres are usually attributed to calcareous cysts of dinoflagellates following comparisons of ultrastructure with modern species. The abundance of different calcispheres in the Silurian sediments of Gotland and the observation that many of the calcareous microfossils occur in distinctly different facies as well as their spherical shape indicate that they probably belong to calcareous micro- and nannoplankton. We therefore conclude that calcareous plankton most probably existed already during the Palaeozoic, but can only be observed under conditions of exceptional preservation.  相似文献

This study investigated variations in the concentration of nutrients, antinutrients and mineral content of Amaranthus caudatus harvested from different soil types at various stages of maturity. Four out the five soils namely; sandy clay loam, silty clay loam, clayey loam and loam were experimentally formulated from primary particles of silt, clay and sand in line with the United State Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) soil triangle protocol. The unfractionated soil was used as the control. After harvesting at pre-flowering (61 days after planting), flowering (71 days after planting) and post-flowering (91 days after planting) stages, nutrient and antinutrient analyses were carried out following Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) and other referenced methods while the Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometer was used to determine mineral compositions of the plant samples. The results of the study revealed that particle size and physicochemical properties of the soil influenced the number of minerals deposited in plant tissues. It was further observed that the nutritional properties of the plant change as plant ages. For an optimal yield of vitamins A and E, clayey loam proved to be the best soil particularly when A. caudatus is harvested before flowering but for vitamin C, sandy clayey loam yielded the highest output at the same stage. Similarly, clayey loam and loam soils yielded the highest proximate compositions at flowering and pre-flowering; however, mineral elements (micro and macro) were highest in control and loam soils.  相似文献

The Cambrian of Malaysia is best represented by the quartzose Machinchang Formation in Langkawi, Kedah, northwest Peninsular Malaysia. It is divisible into three members. The oldest Hulor Member (>1260 m thick) is a coarsening upward succession of rhythmically interlayered graded siltstone, mudstone and clayey sandstone deposited as a prograded prodelta deposit. The middle Chinchin Member (>1575 m thick) is a fining upward succession of quartzose conglomerate and sandstone subdivisible into three beds. The lowest Anak Datai Bed (575 m thick) is made up of graded bedded, cross-bedded pebbly sandstone and conglomerate of estuarine channel-fills and thin to thick beds of low angle, planar cross-bedded sandstone with heavy mineral concentrations deposited as upper shoreface to beach deposits. The Temurun Bed (340 m thick) is of upper estuarine deposits of wavy-bedded sandstone and pebbly sandstone, fine tuffs and thin argillites. The upper Tengkorak Bed (>200 m thick) spans the Cambro-Ordovician boundary and consists of thick tabular bedded upper shoreface to beach fine sandstone with interbeds of fine rippled sandstone, acid tuff beds and mudstone belonging to a series of barrier beach complexes. The youngest Jemurok Member (>420 m thick) is a fining upward succession of siltstone, mudstone and hummocky cross-bedded sandstone and thin limestone deposited in storm influenced shoreface to back barrier lagoon with tidal channel environments. It has fragmentary trilobites, brachiopods, abundant trace fossils and the Kinneyian wrinkle marks.The overall sequence belongs to a highly destructive, wave-influenced delta deposit with a series of preserved beach-ridge complexes. Clastic sedimentation was reduced by peneplation of the source area as shown by the finer and thinner beds that grade into limestone of the overlying Ordovician Setul Formation.  相似文献

The Lower Jurassic, Blue Lias Formation at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England is rhythmically bedded with symmetrical rhythms consisting of laminated black shale followed by dark then pale marls (sometimes cemented into pale limestones) and back to laminated black shale. Its trace fossil fauna includes nine ichno‐genera and represents a shallow shelf paleoenviron‐ment. The ichnofauna occurs in three assemblages named after consistently occurring ichnogenera. A Chondrites assemblage (diversity = 1 ichnogenus) and a Chondrites‐Arenicolites assemblage (diversity = 2–3 ichnogenera) are typical of dark marls but may penetrate tops of laminated black shales. A thalassi‐noides‐Chondrites‐Arenicolites assemblage (diversity up to 7 ichnogenera) is typical of pale marls or limestones. Blue Lias limestones are diagenetic: dark laminated limestones and pale bioturbated limestones are cemented equivalents of laminated black shales and pale marls, respectively. However, pale burrow fills in darker sediments and vice versa confirm the rhythms are primary. Rhythms represent redox cycles, fluctuating from anoxic laminated black shales lacking mac‐robenthos or infauna (bioturbation index = 0) to oxic, bioturbated, pale marls or limestones with large mac‐robenthos such as Gryphaea or Plagiostoma and diverse infauna (bioturbation index = 5).  相似文献

The geology of Mesa Verde National Park (MVNP) poses unique problems to road construction and maintenance. Major geologic formations of the Park consist of an overlying resistant sandstone cap underlain by highly erodable shales. Once this sandstone cap is removed, the shales are easily eroded away, creating the notable mesas of the region. In many places, road construction has removed the sandstone layer and vegetation resulting in unaesthetic barren slopes that require continual maintenance and have proven difficult to revegetate. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of several cultural techniques combined with seeding and transplanting indigenous plants for revegetation of these roadcut slopes. Techniques evaluated were fertilization, mulching, soil pitting, and polyacrylamide amendments. Replicated test plots were established at three roadcut sites in MVNP to evaluate these techniques by measuring percent plant cover by species over a 4‐year period. A combination of seeding grasses and transplanting forbs and shrubs appeared to be the optimal way to maintain species diversity and structure on the roadcuts while accomplishing the goal of revegetating these difficult sites. The perennial forb Aster glaucodes and the shrub Artemisia ludoviciana showed high survival when transplanted in the experimental roadcut sites. These species, as well as the perennial grass Pascopyrum smithii, also established well from seed. The addition of an organic fertilizer, in combination with mulch, proved to be the most effective method of improving vegetation cover for these and other transplanted species.  相似文献

The Lower Cretaceous Maiolica Formation represents the classic pelagic succession of the Apulian margin of the Tethys Ocean, in the Southern Alps. It consists of white calcilutites with minor marly layers and black shales. A multidisciplinary study including lithostratigraphy, nannofossil assemblage composition and organic geochemistry was performed on two composite sections in order to characterise the marl–shale layers that record production and storage of organic matter (OM) and terrigenous input in the Berriasian–Aptian interval. Such layers are associated with turbidite deposition and bottom current activity in the Late Berriasian–earliest Valanginian, Late Valanginian and Early Aptian. The uppermost Hauterivian–Barremian black shales alternate with pelagic calcilutites, forming an interval barren of redeposited layers. The quantity of organic carbon increases from the Berriasian to the Barremian; the background composition of the kerogen is continental-dominated, with varying proportions of marine-derived OM. Preservation of OM did not necessarily occur under anoxic conditions; on the contrary, storage of OM probably resulted from enhanced terrestrial input of nutrients, siliciclastics, woody and herbaceous fragments, inducing mesotrophic conditions and increased primary productivity. Higher fertility of surface waters during the Late Valanginian and Early Aptian is reflected by distinctive decreases in abundance of oligotrophic nannoconids and increase in abundance of mesotrophic Diazomatholithus in the Valanginian. During the Barremian, the rhythmic establishment of eutrophic conditions, documented by the highest amounts of marine OM, determined high-frequency fluctuations in nannoconid abundance. The Early Aptian nannoconid crisis is interpreted as the result of a major climate change and enhanced primary productivity. Variations of calcareous nannofloras, as well as changes of lithology and OM, which we describe in the Lower Cretaceous Maiolica Formation of the Lombardian Basin, can also be recognised in coeval units from other sites of the Apulian side of the Tethys. Similar episodes of siliciclastic and terrestrial OM accumulation and major changes in calcareous nannofossils are also recorded in the Upper Valanginian and Lower Aptian pelagic sediments of the Tethys, Atlantic and, partly, Pacific oceans. Such nannofossil variations are coeval with positive excursions of the δ13C curve and suggest perturbations of the bio-geochemical cycles at a global scale. Additional minor changes in siliciclastic and terrestrial OM accumulation as well as in nannofloras are probably the result of local events, strictly related to the physiography and evolution of the Tethyan margin.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the influence of soil texture, moisture and surface cracks on adult preference and survival of the root-feeding flea beetle, Longitarsus bethae Savini and Escalona (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a natural enemy of the weed, Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae). Adult feeding, oviposition preference, and survival of the immature stages of L. bethae were examined at four soil textures (clayey, silty loam, sandy loam, and sandy soil), three soil moisture levels (low, moderate, and high), and two soil surface conditions (with or without surface cracks). Both soil texture and moisture had no influence on leaf feeding and colonization by adult L. bethae. Soil texture had a significant influence on oviposition, with adults preferring to lay on clayey and sandy soils to silty or sandy loam soils. However, survival to adulthood was significantly higher in clayey soils than in other soil textures. There was a tendency for females to deposit more eggs at greater depth in both clayey and sandy soils than in other soil textures. Although oviposition preference and depth of oviposition were not influenced by soil moisture, survival in moderately moist soils was significantly higher than in other moisture levels. Development of immature stages in high soil moisture levels was significantly slower than in other soil moisture levels. There were no variations in the body size of beetles that emerged from different soil textures and moisture levels. Females laid almost three times more eggs on cracked than on noncracked soils. It is predicted that clayey and moderately moist soils will favor the survival of L. bethae, and under these conditions, damage to the roots is likely to be high. This information will aid in the selection of suitable release sites where L. bethae would be most likely to become established.  相似文献

The fish swimming trace Undichna unisulca is reported from a sandstone block collected from the Upper Silurian (Ludlow) Burgsvik Formation of Gotland, Sweden. It represents the oldest record of a vertebrate trace (apart from coprolites), predating previous finds from the Lower Devonian by at least 10 Ma. A thelodont or acanthodian fish may have produced the sinusoidal trails with the aid of their caudal or anal fins while browsing slowly over the sediment whilst searching for food.  相似文献

The common occurrence of foraminifera in strata deposited under anoxic environmental conditions throughout the geologic record raises the question of whether foraminifera actually survive anoxic or reducing conditions. To test this, benthic foraminifera from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica were exposed to anoxic or reducing conditions for 30 days. These Antarctic forms are known to be exposed to anoxic events in their natural environment. An adenosine triphosphate (ATP) assay was used to determine foraminiferal survival, and their ultrastructure was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to evaluate any possible effect that might have resulted from exposure to anoxic or reducing conditions. The experimental treatments did not have any statistically significant effects upon the foraminifers with regards to survival or average ATP content per individual including the four most common living species. Some ultrastructural evidence for encystment (fibrillar membrane-bound bodies in the cytoplasm of many specimens) was observed. Field data include the observation thatGlobocassidulina cf.G. biora resides in sediments to depths of 7 cm, as evidenced by ultrastructural investigations. A specimen ofGlobocassidulina cf.G. biora collected from sediments containing anoxic pore waters showed numerous bacteria within the confines of the organic lining. The occurrence of cytoplasmic inclusions similar in appearance to car☐ysomes within these bacteria suggest possible affinities to the chemolithotrophicThiobacillus. Bacteria of this type were not observed in specimens collected from oxygenated pore waters. These field and laboratory findings suggest that certain foraminifera may be facultative anaerobes able to withstand reducing conditions.  相似文献

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae), is the major tephritid pest in the Mediterranean region. This insect may overwinter as pupae inside fruits or in soil. Therefore, infection with entomopathogenic fungi is a potentially useful control technique during the insect’s soil-dwelling stage. Entomopathogenic fungi have an important role in Integrated Pest Management programs as an alternative to conventional chemical control, but they have been usually selected on the basis of laboratory results with little regard to fungal ecology. In this work, we designed several experiments to study the availability and movement of the EF Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) conidia in 16 soils differing widely in pH, texture, organic matter, and carbonate contents. Experiments of adsorption and drag of conidia by soil particles suspended in CaCl2 solutions of different ionic strength showed B. bassiana conidia to be retained by clay particles, and this effect disappeared with increasing ionic strength. The availability of M. anisopliae conidia in the suspension tended to be lower for sandy than for clayey soils and was not influenced by ionic strength. Regardless of soil properties, over 90% of the added fungal propagules were recovered from the surface layer of columns of packed soils representing model combinations of texture (sandy or clayey) and pH values (acid or alkaline). However, retention of B. bassiana conidia in the surface layer was higher in clayey than in sandy soils, and the retention of M. anisopliae conidia in the surface layer was higher in sandy than in clayey soils. Finally, neither soil texture nor ionic strength affected the infectivity of conidia of both fungal strains to C. capitata puparia.  相似文献

Estrogens such as 17-β estradiol (E2) are endocrine-disrupting compounds and can affect the reproductive systems of aquatic organisms. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms of their transport in the environment. E2 and its daughter product estrone (E1) are both strongly adsorbed by soil organic matter and have relatively short half-lives. Reduced contact time with soil makes transport of E2 and E1 in soil more likely. In this study, intact soil cores from three soils representing a range of particle size distribution, structure, and organic matter content were used to compare the transport of E2 with and without the presence of colloidal material fractionated from soil or swine manure. In chemical transport experiments conducted with undisturbed soil columns, E2 and E1 were measured both in solution and attached to suspended solids in column effluent. During the transport experiments, colloids carrying E2 passed through all soils, with the exception of the sandy soil. The presence of colloids decreased the first detection time of E2 in the aqueous phase, was correlated with greater peak E2 concentrations in the effluent of both loamy and clayey soils, but not through the sandy soil, and increased mass fractions of the E2 that was transported.  相似文献
