Fiftyfour thousand diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon were tagged with coded-wire micro-tags and released to the sea as smolts from two freshwater sites in Ireland in 1996 and 1997. Over 36,000 were mixed-sex groups in which the triploids (MS3N) were treated batches and the diploids (MS2N) were untreated batches of a single group of fertilized eggs at each site and year class. Over 17,000 were all-females, the triploids (AF3N) being treated batches and the diploids (AF2N) untreated batches of a single group of fertilized eggs at each site and year class. Adult tagged fish were subsequently recovered in the coastal fishery and in freshwater traps and angling fisheries in the rivers of release during 1997, 1998 and 1999. Recoveries from migration ranged from 0.08 to 9.79%. Diploid recoveries were within the normal ranges for salmon ranched from these sites, being between 0.64 and 1.82% at one site and between 3.85 and 9.79% at the other. Triploid recoveries, which occurred in the coastal fishery and in freshwater, ranged from 0.08 to 0.40% at the first site and from 0.98 to 2.05% at the other. Overall, triploid recoveries were between 12 and 24% of their diploid siblings within each release group. There were two peaks of recapture in the coastal fishery, the first in mid-June and the second in mid to late July. All-female diploids appeared to enter the fishery in advance of mixed-sex diploids. Triploids were the latest to arrive. There was no evidence of increased straying in triploids relative to diploids and the mean lengths, weights and condition factors were not significantly different between the ploidy groups. Triploidisation therefore reduced the home water harvest of treated salmon to less than 25% but did not completely eliminate triploid recaptures. The way in which triploidisation may influence the return of salmon from the oceanic feeding grounds is discussed.  相似文献

Confinement of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from four different populations (all–female diploids, all–female triploids, mixed sex diploids and mixed sex triploids) either before (FW parr) or after (SW smolts) transfer to sea elevated plasma cortisol and plasma lactate from control levels irrespective of ploidy status. Both before and after confinement, plasma cortisol levels in SW smolts (6–174 ng ml–1) were higher than those in FW parr (4–58 ng ml–1), which possibly reflected the physiological challenge of acclimation to SW. Mixed sex populations of SW smolts had higher cortisol levels than all–female populations. The duration of confinement (1, 3 or 6 h) affected the magnitude of the plasma cortisol and lactate responses in SW smolts. Plasma cortisol levels in diploid and triploid SW smolts subjected to 2 h of confinement decreased to pre–stress levels within 6 h post–confinement. Plasma lactate levels were not significantly different from pre–stress levels 48 h after confinement. As no difference exists in primary and secondary stress responses of Atlantic salmon of differing ploidy status, it is unlikely that differences in mortality rates between diploid and triploid populations under commercial conditions can be attributed to differences in their physiological responses to periods of stress lasting up to 6 h.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted on wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr to determine the effect of surgically implanted dummy transmitters on swimming performance, food consumption and growth. Swimming performance of tagged fish (tag 1·7–3·7% of fish mass) was similar to that of control fish 1, 5 and 10 days after surgery. Negative effects on growth, however, were found up to day 36 of a 45 day experiment (tag 0·9–2·6% of fish mass). Consumption rates were similar between tagged and control fish and did not explain differences in growth.  相似文献

Movements of adult Atlantic salmon were determined as they migrated through Loch Faskally, a 4-km long hydroelectric reservoir in North-east Scotland. The horizontal and vertical movements of four salmon were monitored for periods of 4–7 days using depth-sensing acoustic transmitters in June–July 1995. Each fish began sustained directed upstream movements within 5·5 h after release at swimming speeds of 0·15–0·40 bl s−1. Three fish reached the head of the loch after 7·25–17 h, but then returned downstream. The four fish remained in the upper half of the loch for 15–51 days, making localized movements. Mean depths of fish were 3·7–4·0 m (max 20·7 m). Two fish were recorded at significantly shallower depths at night than during the day. Departure from the loch coincided with periods of high water flow into the reservoir. In May–July 1996, 17 radio-tagged salmon entered Loch Faskally and reached the head of the loch in 3 h–5·8 days (mean 39 h). The durations of stay in the loch varied from 3 h 50 min to 67·4 days (mean 10·9 days). Only two radio-tagged salmon left the loch under conditions of high water flow into the loch.  相似文献

The behavioural and physiological effects of surgical implantation of dummy miniature acoustic transmitters into the peritonealcavities ofjuvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were assessed. lntraperitoneal implantations had no significant effect on growth, feeding or swimming behaviour in either parr or smolts. Recovery from the surgical implantation was both rapid and total; infection was absent; and physiological processes such as smoltification and maturation of testes in precocious parr were unaffected. Expulsion of the transmitter through the body wall, not through the implantation wound, occurred in a number of fish but without adversely affecting the animals. The intraperitoneal implantation technique is discussed in relation to its use during biotelemetry studies.  相似文献

Feeding and prey-selection of wild Atlantic salmon post-smolts   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The diet of post-smolt Atlantic salmon Salmo salar caught in the Trondheimsfjord and Frohavet in central Norway, based on stomach contents analysis, showed a gradual change during migration from the river to the estuary, fjord and coastal areas. Post-smolts caught in the estuary had eaten intertidal gammarid amphipods, while post-smolts caught further seawards preyed upon available marine prey such as Calanus spp., adult euphausiids and fish larvae. The frequency of adult insects was high in all post-smolt stomachs. The gradual change in diet suggested that feeding conditions in the early marine phase were important for post-smolt survival and growth. With the exception of the copepods, there was no overall similarity between species composition of the plankton samples and the stomach contents. Although the hypothesis that the post-smolts are opportunistic feeders cannot be rejected, the composition of the stomach contents suggests a possible selectivity of advantageous prey.  相似文献

Exposure of sexually mature pre-spawning Atlantic salmon Salmo salar to Fossbekk water (pH 5·2) for 7 days led to a significant reduction in critical swimming speed (U-crit) in females but not in males. Exposure to Fossbekk water +A1 (as AlCl3) for 24 h led to a significant reduction in U-crit in both males and females. In contrast to fish exposed for 7 days to Fossbekk water, fish exposed to Fossbekk+A1 had accumulated much more aluminium and mucus on their gills. Losses of plasma ions were similar in both groups exposed to acid water. Blood glucose was twice as high in fish exposed to Fossbekk water for 7 days compared with fish exposed to Fossbekk+A1 for 24 h. Plasma cortisol was still elevated compared with controls after exposure to Fossbekk water for 7 days. Possible mechanisms for the observed decrease in U-crit at the different exposures are discussed.  相似文献

In winter, post-smolts of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar exposed to continuous additional light of different intensities (LL) in 14 m deep sea cages maintained a constant swimming speed in circular polarized schools with maximum fish density in the warmest water layers at 11 m depth. By contrast, fish exposed to natural light only (NL) ceased swimming at dusk, ascended from the warm layer to the thermocline c. 3 m depth and were more dispersed in the whole water column during the dark phase. In early spring, fish exposed to LL of medium (LL-MED) or high (LL-HIGH) light intensity ascended and maximum fish density was at 5 m depth. A similar ascent was delayed to late spring in both the low intensity group (LL-LOW) and the NL group, coinciding with a shift in maximum temperature to this depth. The advanced ascent in the LL-HIGH and LL-MED groups is interpreted as a light-induced shift in a seasonal rhythm of feeding motivation. In summer, most of the fish in all four treatment groups were observed in the warm and less saline 4 m surface layer. It is suggested that the seasonal and diel changes in vertical distribution of Atlantic salmon are related inversely to feeding motivation, with preferences for maximum temperature and darkness acting as modifying factors.  相似文献

Pair and group experiments were conducted to determine whether differences exist in feeding success between juvenile diploid and triploid salmonids in a competitive situation. In the pair experiments, 22 pairs (one diploid and one triploid) of size-matched Quebec-strain brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis (7·2–46·3 g) were fed an unlimited number of pellets three times a day for 5 days. Dominance was assigned to the fish which ate the most pellets within each pair. In the group experiments, groups of three diploid and three triploid size-matched fish were fed a restricted ration three times a day for 5 days. Hierarchical rank within the group was assigned based on the number of pellets consumed by each fish. The group experiment was repeated 10 times with Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (5·1–62·7 g), Quebec-strain brook trout (11·8-110·8 g), and large UNB-strain brook trout (18·2–33·0 g), and 12 times with smaller UNB-strain brook trout (0·6–2·0 g). A statistically significant difference in rank between ploidies was found only for the smaller UNB-strain brook trout in the group experiments, with diploids dominant over triploids. This suggests that there may be a difference in competitive feeding success between diploid and triploid brook trout early in development, but that this difference diminishes as the fish grow.  相似文献

Genetic studies on serum transferrins in Atlantic salmon   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Published and unpublished data on genetic variation at the transferrin locus ( TF *) in Atlantic salmon from rivers in eastern North America sampled from 1968 to 1970 were reanalysed and compared with data for samples collected in 1998 from nine of the same rivers. Genetic differentiation among rivers was highly significant as was spatial differentiation among tributary samples within the Miramichi River system, the largest rivers studied. Comparison of allele frequencies in rivers also sampled in 1998 show no overall evidence of significant genetic change after 30 years, spanning 9 generations. The results strongly support the stability of the patterns of spatial genetic differentiation and support the occurrence in Atlantic salmon of reproductive isolation among rivers and among tributaries within large river systems.  相似文献

When male hybrids of Atlantic salmon × brown trout were backcrossed to female Atlantic salmon, approximately 1% of diploid progeny hatched. These were shown to exhibit recombinant genotypes when examined electrophoreticalty at five enzyme loci. This is the first confirmation of genie recombination in backcrosses of these species. Plasma melatonin synthesis in juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar decreased with increasing light intensity. Melatonin profiles reflected accurately the photoperiod under which the salmon were maintained. The study was undertaken on three adjacent rivers in NW Ireland, on one of which an Atlantic salmon Salmo salar freshwater juvenile rearing unit is situated. Two markers which distinguished farm and wild populations were used. An Ava II-B RFLP in the ND1 region of mtDNA was at a frequency of 0.58 in the farm strain but absent in the wild populations. Allele E at minisatellite locus Ssa- A45/2/l was at a frequency of 0.91 in farm samples, but at a maximum of 0.41 in the populations in the two rivers adjacent to the one with the juvenile rearing unit. The farm strain showed a significant reduction in mean heterozygosity (0.281 ± 0.057), over three minisatellite loci examined, compared to wild samples (0.532 ± 0.063). The occurrence of farm genotypes and the independent occurrence of mtDNA and minisatellite markers in several parr samples from the river indicated that escaped juvenile salmon completed their life cycle, bred and interbred with native fish, upon their return to the river. Escaped fish homed accurately, as adults, to the site of escape, i.e. the area adjacent to the hatchery outflow in the upstream part of the river. Breeding of males in the lower part of the river was also indicated but this could have been due to mature male parr which had moved downstream. The return of adults of farm origin to the river to breed was indicated by the presence of the Ava II-B haplotype in adults netted in the estuary.  相似文献

Genetic diversity in the second domain exon of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class I was investigated in two dams and nine of their haploid offspring by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequence analysis. A similar study was also performed on nine diploid offspring from one of these dams. The complex segregation patterns and sequence similarities between variants make definitive allele, haplotype and locus assignments difficult. There are, however, indications of six Mhc- Sasa class I loci and a fairly well-defined haplotype of four variants. One non-polymorphic variant present in most specimens could be a salmon analogue to the human non-classical loci.  相似文献

In this study, swim-tunnel respirometry was performed on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar post-smolts in a 90 l respirometer on individuals and compared with groups or individuals of similar sizes tested in a 1905 l respirometer, to determine if differences between set-ups and protocols exist. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) derived from the lowest oxygen uptake rate cycles over a 20 h period was statistically similar to SMR derived from back extrapolating to zero swim speed. However, maximum metabolic rate (MMR) estimates varied significantly between swimming at maximum speed, following an exhaustive chase protocol and during confinement stress. Most notably, the mean (±SE) MMR was 511 ± 15 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 in the swim test which was 52% higher compared with 337 ± 9 mg O2 kg−1 in the chase protocol, showing that the latter approach causes a substantial underestimation. Performing group respirometry in the larger swim tunnel provided statistically similar estimates of SMR and MMR as for individual fish tested in the smaller tunnel. While we hypothesised a larger swim section and swimming in groups would improve swimming performance, Ucrit was statistically similar between both set-ups and statistically similar between swimming alone v. swimming in groups in the larger set-up, suggesting that this species does not benefit hydrodynamically from swimming in a school in these conditions. Different methods and set-ups have their own respective limitations and advantages depending on the questions being addressed, the time available, the number of replicates required and if supplementary samplings such as blood or gill tissues are needed. Hence, method choice should be carefully considered when planning experiments and when comparing previous studies.  相似文献

Pleistocene glaciations drove repeated range contractions and expansions shaping contemporary intraspecific diversity. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the western and eastern Atlantic diverged >600,000 years before present, with the two lineages isolated in different southern refugia during glacial maxima, driving trans‐Atlantic genomic and karyotypic divergence. Here, we investigate the genomic consequences of glacial isolation and trans‐Atlantic secondary contact using 108,870 single nucleotide polymorphisms genotyped in 80 North American and European populations. Throughout North America, we identified extensive interindividual variation and discrete linkage blocks within and between chromosomes with known trans‐Atlantic differences in rearrangements: Ssa01/Ssa23 translocation and Ssa08/Ssa29 fusion. Spatial genetic analyses suggest independence of rearrangements, with Ssa01/Ssa23 showing high European introgression (>50%) in northern populations indicative of post‐glacial trans‐Atlantic secondary contact, contrasting with low European ancestry genome‐wide (3%). Ssa08/Ssa29 showed greater intrapopulation diversity, suggesting a derived chromosome fusion polymorphism that evolved within North America. Evidence of potential selection on both genomic regions suggests that the adaptive role of rearrangements warrants further investigation in Atlantic salmon. Our study highlights how Pleistocene glaciations can influence large‐scale intraspecific variation in genomic architecture of northern species.  相似文献
