The objective of this study was to highlight the problems that arise during the reproduction between thin-tailed rams and fat-tailed ewes. At the same time, particular emphasis laid on the influence of sheep breed, sheep age, time after ram introduction and day of the ewe estrus cycle on ram and ewe sexual behaviour. Rams were subjected to sexual performance tests by being individually exposed to 12 ewes for 3 h daily, 19 consecutive days. The 16 rams of the experiment were separated according to their age (9 and 21 months old) and breed (Chios and Karagouniki), and the 96 ewes of Chios fat-tailed breed, were divided by age (9 and 21 months old). The main characteristics of courtship behaviour, like sniffing, nudging, flehmen response and following were recorded and studied in detail. Mature Chios rams, which were the only one with previous experience of Chios ewes, exhibited higher rates of sexual interest per ewe than the other rams (P < 0.05). On the other hand, rams sniffed and nudged more young than mature ewes (P < 0.05), probably due to the fact that young ewes did not express intense symptoms of estrus. Young rams exhibited substandard sexual interest towards mature ewes, when they first came in contact with them (P < 0.05). In general, Karagouniki thin-tailed rams exhibited reduced rates of mating behaviour when they courted with Chios fat-tailed ewes in comparison with Chios rams (P < 0.05). Moreover, as the time after ram introduction passed, the frequency and duration of sexual behaviour components decreased (P < 0.001). Finally, the effect of the day of the experiment was only significant in the case of sniffing, which increased during the first 2 days and then declined and stabilized (P < 0.01). As it was demonstrated, ram age and ram breed played a fundamental role in the exhibition of sexual interest elements.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a single generation of artificial selection for sexual performance in rams on the sexual behavior and fecundity of their male and female progeny. Ninety-two ram lambs born to sires selected for either high or low sexual performance were evaluated for their sexual behaviors at approximately 8 months of age when individually exposed to four estrous ewes for 30min in four weekly serving capacity tests. Number of mounts and successful matings (ejaculations) were recorded. Fourteen of the 17 high-performing ram lambs identified were sired by high-performing sires, whereas 22 of 37 low-performing ram lambs were sired by low-performing sires (P<0.01). Sons of high-performing sires exhibited more ejaculations (P<0.04) and more mounts without ejaculation (P<0.02) than sons of low-performing sires. The two groups of ram lambs did not differ in mating efficiency (ratio of ejaculations to total mounts). Daughters of high-performing rams (N=79) exhibited their first behavioral estrus approximately 8 days earlier than daughters (N=61) of low-performing sires (P<0.005). Ovulation rates for the two groups of ewe lambs did not differ (P=0.55). It was concluded that there was sufficient genetic variation in the population of sheep studied to obtain a significant response to selection for ram sexual performance in both male and female offspring in a single generation.  相似文献

The sheep offers a unique model to study male sexual behavior and sexual partner preference. Rams are seasonal breeders and show the greatest libido during short days coincident with the resumption of ovarian cyclicity in the ewe. Threshold concentrations of testosterone are required for the acquisition and display of adult sexual behavior. In addition, estrogens produced from circulating testosterone by cytochrome P450 aromatase in the preoptic area are critical for the maintenance of sexual behaviors in rams. Sex differences in adult reproductive behaviors and hormone responsiveness are the result of permanent organizational effects exerted by testosterone and its metabolites on brain development. Early exposure to ewes enhances ram sexual performance, but cannot prevent some rams from exhibiting male-oriented sexual partner preferences. Neurochemical and neuroanatomical studies suggest that male-oriented ram behavior may be a consequence of individual variations in brain sexual differentiation.  相似文献

The hypothesis that female-female mounting is proceptivity in goats, in that male goats are aroused by the visual cues of this mounting behavior, was tested. Once a week, male goats were randomly selected and placed in a test pen in which they were allowed to observe one of six selected social or sexual stimulus conditions. The stimulus conditions were one familiar male with two estrous females (MEE); three estrous females that displayed female-female mounting (E(m)); three estrous females that did not mount (E(nm)); three non-estrous females (N(E)); three familiar males (M); and no animals in the pen (Empty). After 10 min, the stimulus animals were removed, and an estrous female was placed in the test pen with the male for a 20-min sexual performance test. During sexual performance tests, the frequencies and latencies of all sexual behaviors were recorded. This procedure was repeated so all males (n = 6) were tested once each test day, and all the stimulus conditions were presented each test day. This was repeated weekly until all males had been exposed to each stimulus condition. Viewing mounting behavior, whether male-female or female-female, increased the total number of sexual behaviors displayed, increased ejaculation frequency, and decreased latency to first mount and ejaculation, post-ejaculatory interval, and the interval between ejaculations. We conclude that male goats are aroused by the visual cues of mounting behavior, and that female-female mounting is proceptivity in goats.  相似文献

The sexual performance of bulls and male goats is improved if they are allowed to view the hetero-sexual behavior of other males as a prelude to mating. The purpose of the following study was to determine whether sexual stimulation enhances the sexual performance of rams. In Experiment 1, 11 sexually experienced ram lambs ( 9 months of age) and 18 sexually experienced yearling and 2-year-old rams were individually exposed to 4 unrestrained, hormone-induced estrous ewes for 60 min after viewing the courtship and mounting behaviors of a male conspecific for 20 min (two tests) and in the absence of stimulator animals (two tests). In contrast to the results with bulls and bucks, the rams were hardly influenced by the sexual stimulation treatment. Latencies for first mount and first ejaculation were shorter for sexually stimulated ram lambs; otherwise, treatment differences were negligible.

A similar follow-up experiment was administered to 12 mature rams using restrained females in the sexual performance tests. Again, treatment differences were minor.

It was concluded that sexual stimulation does not functionally enhance the sexual performance of rams. Species differences in response to sexual stimulation are discussed in terms of female sexual behaviors that may result in a selective (competitive) advantage to males that are stimulated to locate and mate with females early in the estrous period.  相似文献

Ewes in oestrus, besides being receptive to rams, develop an active search for them. We performed two experiments to determine if oestrous ewes prefer: (1) high or low sexual-performance rams, and (2) 2-year-old or aged (>8-years-old) rams. In the first experiment, the preference of ewes for rams with high or low sexual performances was compared in 16 tests. In the second experiment, 17 tests were performed comparing ewes’ preference for aged rams (>8-years-old) or young rams (2-years-old). In each test, two rams were tied at equal distances from the point of entrance of the ewe, with a maximum mobility for each ram of 2 m. The first approach to a ram, the quantity of approaches toward each ram (less than one body length), and the total time that the ewe remained near each ram were registered during 5 min. Oestrous ewes did not display any preference according to sexual performance of rams, but spent significantly more time (P = 0.02), and did it in more tests (P = 0.025), with young than with aged rams. Ewes also tended to approach first (P = 0.07), and more times in more tests (P = 0.06), to young than to aged rams. We conclude that ram's sexual performance seems not to influence oestrous ewes preference, and that ewes’ prefer young (2-years-old) rather than aged rams (>8-years-old).  相似文献

The physiological responses of luteinizing hormone, testosterone and cortisol in sexually experienced Ile de France rams to the introduction of estrous females were studied during the nonbreeding season. Blood sampling were collected from males for 7 h at 20-min intervals, starting 3 h before stimulation by estrous females. The differences in hormonal secretions were tested by comparisons between pretreatment and treatment Periods in 45 stimulated rams. Comparisons were conducted between rams that had increased LH pulse frequency and those that did not, between rams that ejaculated and those that did not, and between rams that were in direct physical contact and those that were kept at a distance of 30 cm from estrous females. Twenty-five rams (55% of the total) showed significant increases in LH pulse frequency (range, 0.80 to 4.00 peaks/ram/6 h, P<0.05), in basal and mean LH levels (1.5- and 2.5-fold, respectively), and in mean testosterone levels (3.5-fold). More frequent LH pulses had been found during the pretreatment period in 20 rams without increased LH pulse frequency. Eight ejaculating rams showed higher cortisol and mean, basal, and peak LH amplitude levels. Deprivation of physical contact with estrous females was associated with an absence of endocrine response. These results suggest that olfactory and/or tactile cues may be involved in the female effect on hormone levels.  相似文献

Sexual motivation, sexual partner preference, and sexual performance represent three different aspects of sexual behavior that are critical in determining the reproductive success of a species. Although the display of sexual behavior is under strict hormonal control in both sexes, the relative roles of androgen and estrogen receptors in activating the various components of male sexual behavior are still largely unknown. A recently developed mouse model that is deficient in estradiol due to targeted disruption of exons 1 and 2 of the Cyp19 gene (aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice) was used here to analyze the role of estradiol in the control of all three aspects of male sexual behavior. When tested in a Y-maze providing volatile olfactory cues, male ArKO mice did not show a preference for the odors from an estrous female over those from an intact male, whereas wild-type (WT) and heterozygous (HET) males clearly preferred to sniff estrous odors. When provided with visual and olfactory cues, male ArKO mice also failed to show a preference for an estrous female when given a choice between an estrous female and an empty arm. However, sexual partner preferences of male ArKO mice were not sex-reversed: they did not prefer to investigate an intact male over an estrous female or empty arm. Thus, male ArKO mice seemed to have general deficits in discriminating between conspecifics by using olfactory and visual cues. Male coital behavior was also severely impaired in male ArKO mice: they displayed significantly fewer mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations than WT and HET males. Latencies to first mount or intromission were also significantly longer in ArKO males compared to WT and HET males, in addition to them showing less interest in investigating olfactory and visual cues in a Y-maze, suggesting that they were sexually less motivated. However, three out of seven male ArKO mice were capable of siring litters provided they were housed with a female for a prolonged period of time. In conclusion, aromatization of testosterone to estradiol appears to be essential for sexual motivation and sexual partner preference. By contrast, estradiol may play only a limited role in the expression of male coital behaviors.  相似文献

Nine rams had their penises deviated and three others were vasectomized. Six additional intact rams served as controls. Three of the penis-deviated rams were raddled and placed in small flocks of ewes where they proved to be satisfactory detectors of estrus.Vasectomized and penis-deviated rams each were exposed to an estrous ewe for 5 minutes. The number of mounts (mean ± SE) for vasectomized rams was 4.8 ± .5 and for penis-deviated rams was 4.3 ± .5 (P>.05). When the rams had become experienced there were very few failures to mount at least once during the 5-minute period in any of the groups.Semen collection was facilitated in penis-deviated rams. There were no significant differences (P>.05) between penis-deviated and control rams with respect to volume of the ejaculate, or motility, concentration or presence of abnormal spermatozoa. Rams with deviated penises could be useful for detecting estrus and supplying spermatozoa for experimental study or use in artificial insemination.  相似文献

Poor mating behavior results in increased ram costs, an extended lambing season, and decreased genetic progress from sires with desired production traits. Producers have recognized the importance of ram libido, but constraints regarding time, labor, and facilities generally limit the routine evaluation of ram breeding behavior. Easily measurable production traits would be an usable selection tool if correlated to reproductive performance. To determine the discriminating value of production traits as indicators of reproductive performance, white-faced rams (n = 82; 10–12 months of age) consigned to the University of Wyoming ram test were fed using the Grow-Safe® feeding system. Rams were categorized based on sexual behavior as low, intermediate or mounting. Body weight gain performance, feed intake and feeding behavior were analyzed. Overall production performance was determined using a calculated index ratio based on body weight gain adjusted for wool characteristics. Sexual behavior classification did not influence the index ratio or feed consumed per day. However, numbers of no-intake feeding episodes (P < 0.01) differed according to ram sexual behavior. Rams expressing sexual mounting behavior visited the feed bunk more often than the intermediate performing rams (P < 0.01) and tended to differ from low sexually performing rams. The numbers of visits to the feed bunk in which feed was consumed did not differ according to ram sexual behavior. Average daily gain was not correlated (r ≤ 0.18; P = 0.1) to sexual behavior. These easily attainable measures of performance did not correlate strongly with any measure of sexual behavior. This study provides evidence that rams that exhibit a high level of sexual behavior most likely investigate their environment more thoroughly, which could facilitate the identification of ewes in estrus.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to test whether cells which are born in adulthood and migrate to the olfactory bulb of adult male golden hamsters are activated during sexual behaviors, to determine the time course over which such responsiveness appears, and to ask whether activation is specific to sexual cues. In the first experiment, adult male hamsters were injected with 5'-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU, 50mg/kg b.w.) 3 times over the course of one week in order to mark dividing cells. Ten days, three weeks, or seven weeks after the first BrdU injection, the animals were allowed to mate with an estrous female for half an hour before being sacrificed. Confocal analysis of fluorescent immunostaining of BrdU and c-Fos first revealed dual labeled cells in the olfactory bulb 3 weeks after injection of the thymidine analog. In order to determine whether the activation of these newly generated cells is specific to sexual cues, we next compared the incidence of c-Fos expression in newborn (BrdU positive) cells among male hamsters exposed to an estrous female, an aggressive male, a cotton swab containing vaginal secretion from an estrous female hamster (FHVS), a cotton swab containing peppermint, or a cotton swab containing distilled water. In the mitral and glomerular layers of the accessory olfactory bulb, animals exposed to an estrous female had significantly more double labeled cells than did those given other treatments (p < 0.01). In the mitral layer of the main bulb, animals exposed to an estrous female had a significantly higher percentage of double labeled cells than those of other groups, except those exposed to an aggressive male (p < 0.05). No double labeled cells were seen in medial preoptic area (MPOA), medial nucleus of the amygdala (Me), the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), or the hypothalamus. Our results indicate that cells born in adulthood are more responsive to cues arising from estrous females than other stimuli, and thus may participate in sociosexual behaviors.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the influence of season of the year and altered photoperiod on libido and scrotal circumference (SC). A 30-minute serving-capacity test was used to measure ram libido. the measures of libido were reaction time (RT), time from entry into the pen to first mount and/or service, total mounts (M), and total services (S). The serving-capacity test was conducted by placing a ram with four estrus-induced ewes and measuring RT and counting M and S. Prior to each serving-capacity test, SC was measured for each ram. Rams were tested every two weeks. In Trial I, eleven two-year-old Rambouillet rams from each of three selection lines -a high line (four rams; selected on the basis of high prolificacy), a low line (three rams; selected on the basis of low prolificacy) and a random bred control line (four rams) - were used in a one-year study. Rams were exposed to ambient conditions throughout the year. Rams were more active during the short days of fall and winter, i.e. normal breeding season, as evidenced by a greater number of total mounts and services plus a shorter reaction time. Selection line affected reproductive parameters measured, with the high line having more M and S and a shorter RT than the low line. However, SC was larger in the low line. In Trial II twelve rams were divided into two groups of six. The control group was exposed to ambient conditions from April 18 through July 24. The treated group was exposed to eight hours of light and 16 hours of darkness (8L:16D) from April 18 through July 24, simulating short days of fall and winter. Total services (S) in the 30-minute test interval were higher for rams subjected to the 8L:16D treatment (P<0.01; 2.7+/-0.2 vs 1.6+/-0.2 for 8L:16D and control, respectively). SC was 31.7+/-0.2 vs 30.2+/-0.2 for 8L:16D and control, respectively (P<0.01). Total mounts in 30 minutes were not affected by treatment (6.9+/-0.8 vs 5.7+/-0.8 for 8L:16D and control, respectively; P>0.10). No significant differences in any of the reproductive parameters between treatment groups were observed during the first 28 days. However, there were significant differences (P<0.05) observed between 8L:16D rams and control rams for SC during 42 to 84 days and S between days 42 to 70, respectively. Serving-capacity tests carried out about one month following the end of altered photoperiod trial showed no significant differences between treated and control rams, thus indicating that treatment had no carry-over effect.  相似文献

Stimuli from a prospective mate increase the secretion of luteinising hormone (LH) in sheep. This 'male effect' in ewes and 'female effect' effect in rams is predominantly mediated by olfactory signals, though it is thought that non-olfactory signals play synergistic or substitutive roles. In this study, we tested whether exposure to visual or audio-visual stimuli from a prospective mate would stimulate an increase in LH secretion in ewes (Experiment 1) and rams (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, groups of eight Merino ewes were exposed to one of three stimuli midway through a frequent blood-sampling regimen: full ram contact, still images of rams, a video of ewes and rams mating. Control ewes (n = 8) were completely isolated from rams. Exposure to still images of rams appeared to stimulate an increase in mean LH concentrations (P < 0.05) and tended to increase LH pulse frequency (P < 0.1), but the response was significantly smaller than that observed in ewes exposed to rams (P < 0.01). Audio-visual stimuli had no effect on any parameters of LH secretion (P > 0.1). In Experiment 2, Merino rams were allocated to either an Exposure (n = 7) or a Control (n = 7) group. Exposure rams underwent two exposure periods midway through a frequent blood-sampling regimen; exposure to still images of ewes and audio recorded during mating of ewes and rams (audio-visual exposure); exposure to oestrous ewes (ewe exposure). Control rams were sampled at the same frequency but remained isolated from ewe stimuli. Exposure of rams to the audio-visual stimuli did not affect any parameters of LH secretion (P > 0.1). In contrast, exposure to oestrous ewes increased LH pulse frequency (P < 0.05) and advanced the onset of the next LH pulse (P < 0.05). In conclusion, visual signals appear to be involved in eliciting the neuroendocrine response of ewes to rams and are of greater importance to this phenomenon in ewes (male effect) than rams (female effect). However, overall the visual and audio-visual signals used in this study were far less effective than stimulus animals, suggesting that these stimuli are less important than olfactory signals, or a combination of olfactory and audio-visual signals.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the relationship between serving capacity scores and breeding performance of rams. The first study was conducted to determine whether rams with above or below mean serving capacity scores could perform equally in greater and lesser breeding intensity, single-sire mating schemes. The second study was conducted to determine whether rams with above and below mean serving capacity scores could perform equally well when only one or two ewes were in estrus daily in a multiple-sire breeding scheme (two rams/pen). Rams (n=68) were ranked according to average number of ejaculations recorded in serving capacity tests. Sixteen rams with the greatest scores (above-average) and 16 rams with least scores (below-average) were identified for breeding. Half of above-average and half of below-average rams were used in the two studies. For study 1, each ram was individually introduced to 23 estrus-synchronized ewes for 9 d to simulate high breeding intensity. Rams were given a 5-d rest before they were individually introduced to 23-24 naturally cyclic ewes for 17 d (low breeding intensity). For study 2, 16 rams were paired across ram types, and each pair competed for 20 ewes for 18 d (8 pens). For study 1, ewe fertility (ewes lambing/ewes present at lambing) and number of lambs born were greater (P<0.001) for above-average (0.67+/-0.03 and 27.6+/-1.2, respectively) than for below-average rams (0.39+/-0.07 and 15.3+/-2.7) with greater breeding intensity. Ewe fertility and lambs born did not differ for above-average (0.91+/-0.03 and 37.8+/-1.9, respectively) and below-average rams (0.86+/-0.03 and 39.0+/-1.9) with less breeding intensity. For study 2, number of ewes lambing (99+/-8.0 compared with 72+/-13.6; P=0.12) and number of lambs sired (149+/-18.5 compared with 101+/-22.8; P=0.14) did not differ between above- and below-average rams, respectively, in direct competition. Sexual classifications based on serving capacity tests are related to breeding performance of rams in certain breeding environments. When breeding intensity is greater, above-average rams impregnate more ewes and sire more lambs than below-average rams. When only a small number of ewes are in estrus daily, below-average rams for serving capacity scores perform as well as above-average rams in multiple-sire and single-sire breeding environments. We suggest that above-average rams should be used to reduce number of rams required when breeding intensity is greater.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the frequency of male-male mounting of young rams in all-male groups and their subsequent preferences for female vs. male sexual partners. Mount interactions were monitored in the home pen of 29 rams reared in 1984 and 25 rams reared in 1985. At ∼ 8–10 months of age, and prior to copulatory experience, individual rams were simultaneously exposed to two unfamiliar estrous ewes and two unfamiliar rams. The four stimulus animals were restrained and cloth covers were placed over their perinea to prevent copulations. The Binomial Test was used to verify sexual preferences.Of the 44 rams that were sexually active in the sexual performance tests, 30 (68.2%) met the criterion for female preference, 4 (9.1%) preferred males and 10 (22.7%) exhibited no preference (i.e., were bisexual in orientation). There was little relationship between the frequency of male-male mounting by rams in all-male rearing groups and their subsequent sexual preferences. The majority of young rams prefer to mount ewes, even prior to copulatory experience, but in the absence of females will often mount other males.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine whether exposure of ram lambs to estrual ewes during their first autumn and again as adults just before serving capacity tests (SCT) affected the outcome of the sexual performance tests. Treatments were either early exposure of Polypay ram lambs (i.e., 7-8-mo-old rams with ewes for 17 d [n=30] or no early exposure [n=30]), and late exposure (i.e., 16-19-mo-old rams with estrual ewes for 3 d) or no exposure to estrual ewes in a 2x2 factorial arrangement. Three serving capacity tests were conducted immediately after the early exposure period for individual ram lambs that were exposed to ewes early. Three sham sexual performance tests (i.e., four ram lambs placed in test pens for 30-min without ewes) were conducted with ram lambs that were not exposed to ewes early. All rams were evaluated during nine 30-min serving capacity tests over a 2-mo period at 16-19 mo of age to determine sexual performance. Prior to serving capacity tests, one half of the rams from each early exposure treatment were exposed to estrual-induced ewes for 3 d. Specific sexual behaviors (e.g., sniffs, flehmens, foreleg kicks, vocalizations, mount attempts, mounts, and ejaculations) were recorded during serving capacity tests. Number of sniffs, flehmens, foreleg kicks, vocalizations, and mount attempts were summed without estimating the value of importance and analyzed as courtship behaviors. Sexual performance data were analyzed with Mixed model procedures for repeated measures. During serving capacity tests, the early exposed rams exhibited more courtships (40.3+/-8.0 versus 23.4+/-4.6; P<0.05; LSM+/-estimated SE), mounts (11.3+/-1.0 versus 7.7+/-0.9; P<0.01), and ejaculations (3.3+/-0.2 or 2.4+/-0.2; P<0.01) than rams not exposed to ewes as ram lambs, respectively. We conclude that early exposure of 7-8-mo-old ram lambs to estrual ewes improves sexual performance in serving capacity tests at 16-19 mo of age in most rams whereas, late exposure to estrual ewes for 3 d prior to serving capacity tests did not improve sexual performance scores.  相似文献

Application of the ram effect during the breeding season has been previously disregarded because the ewe reproductive axis is powerfully inhibited by luteal phase progesterone concentrations. However, anovulatory ewes treated with exogenous progestagens respond to ram introduction with an increase in LH concentrations. We therefore tested whether cyclic ewes would respond to ram introduction with an increase in pulsatile LH secretion at all stages of the estrous cycle. We did two experiments using genotypes native to temperate or Mediterranean regions. In Experiment 1 (UK), 12 randomly cycling, North of England Mule ewes were introduced to rams midway through a frequent blood-sampling regime. Ewes in the early (EL; n=3) [corrected] and late luteal (LL; n=6) phase responded to ram introduction with an increase in LH pulse frequency and mean and basal concentration [corrected] of LH (at least P<0.05). In Experiment 2 (Australia), the cycles of 32 Merino ewes were synchronised using intravaginal progestagen pessaries. Pessary insertion was staggered to produce eight ewes at each stage of the estrous cycle: follicular (F), early luteal (EL), mid-luteal (ML) and late luteal (LL). In all stages of the cycle, ewes responded to ram introduction with an increase in LH pulse frequency (P<0.01); EL, ML and LL ewes also had an increase in mean LH concentration (P<0.05). In conclusion, ram introduction to cyclic ewes stimulated an increase in pulsatile LH secretion, independent of ewe genotype or stage of the estrous cycle.  相似文献

The importance of olfactory cues in inducing luteinizing hormone and testosterone secretion as a response to stimulation by sexually receptive ewes has been tested. In sexually experienced rams, olfactory stimulation with urine, wool and vaginal secretions from sexually receptive females placed in a mask did not induce an endocrine response. The female-induced secretion of LH and testosterone was similar in anosmic, sham-operated and in control rams. A procedure for assessing sexual activity (libido) and serving capacity (number of ejaculations) in individual rams is described. Libido and serving capacity was measured by this procedure in 10 Lincoln, 10 Suffolk, 2 Columbia, and 2 Polypay rams prior to the breeding season. Semen was evaluated, and the scrotal circumference measured. The rams were single-sire mated to 10-12 whiteface, crossbred ewes during a 35-day breeding season (September 26 - October 29). First-service conception rates, total conception rate, lambing percentage per ewe lambing, and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were calculated for each ram. The mean libido score for the 24 rams was 8.95 and the mean serving capacity score was 3.16. The 24 rams were classified as low serving capacity (<2 ejaculation), medium serving capacity (2-3 ejaculations), or high serving capacity (>3 ejaculations). There were no significant differences in either conception rate or lambing percentages between the 3 groups of rams. The first-service conception rate, total conception rate, lambing percentage per ewe lambing, and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were 74.8, 93.8, 148.6, and 139.4 percent, respectively, for the 24 rams. Libido and serving capacity tests in the rams, as used in this experiment, prior to the breeding season, were not successful in predicting fertility or prolificacy in ewes.  相似文献

Vaginal secretions are an important source of chemical signals, which affect ewes' attractiveness. Moreover, alterations of vaginal flora reduce sexual attractiveness of estrous ewes. As intravaginal sponges containing progestagens (widely used for estrous synchronization) affect vaginal flora, our aims were to determine if estrous ewes pretreated with intravaginal sponges were less attractive than ewes displaying spontaneous estrus, and if the addition of antibiotic to the sponge mitigated the decreased sexual attractiveness. Seventy-two estrous ewes were used in experiment 1: in 36, estrus was synchronized with commercial intravaginal sponges (50 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate for 14 days, group MAP1), whereas the other 36 were given a PGF2α analogue 19 to 20 days earlier and displayed spontaneous estrus (group C1). In experiment 2, 72 ewes were treated with intravaginal sponges for 14 days; for 36 ewes, the sponges contained 0.02 mg oxytetracycline (group Ox), whereas there was no antibiotic in the sponges for the remaining 36 ewes (group MAP2). In both experiments, sexual attractiveness was determined in 12 groups of six estrous ewes (three MAP1 vs. three C1, and three MAP2 vs. three Ox for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively) located in a 4 × 4 m pen. Courting and mating time that each ram spent with each ewe was recorded. After 5 min, the ewe with which the ram spent more time (most attractive ewe, ranked one, scale one to six) was taken out from the pen. The procedure was repeated until the ram ranked all six ewes, and repeated in the 12 groups in both experiments. In experiment 1, C1 ewes were more attractive than MAP1 ewes (ranks: 2.9 ± 0.3 vs. 4.1 ± 0.3, mean ± SEM, respectively; P < 0.002). In experiment 2, sexual attractiveness of MAP2 and Ox ewes was similar (3.5 ± 0.3 vs. 3.4 ± 0.3, respectively). We concluded that the use of intravaginal sponges impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate negatively affected ewes' sexual attractiveness, but this decrease was not mitigated by inclusion of a local antibiotic.  相似文献
