Consider the third dimension: A new approach for measuring the symmetry of the middle Paleolithic points of the Mirak Site

There is evidence that recognizes the importance of symmetry in the study of the evolution of hominid cognition. The development of stone tools parallels the evolution of human cognition. The last three decades have used quantitative methods that the most important of which is Symmetry Index. This paper proposes a new methodology for measuring the deviation of symmetry using 3D comparison. It focuses on the stone points of the largest Middle Paleolithic open-site in Iran, Mirak. Our results show that the index of deviation of symmetry (IDS) assesses all of the points as symmetrical tools, while this number drops to 133 pieces using 3D comparison. In addition, paired samples t-test suggests a positive correlation between the increasing proportion of preparation removals and the decrease in deviation of symmetry on the two sides of the tools. Thus, it is likely that symmetry is affected by the morphology characteristics.     

Ultrastructural evidence for exocytosis in the median eminence of the rat

Summary Exocytosis has been demonstrated by electron microscopy in the external zone of the median eminence of the rat. Exocytotic profiles have been observed in nerve fibres characterized by the presence of granular vesicles with median diameters of 90–103 nm and agranular vesicles of about 50 nm. In addition to the small agranular vesicles, coated vesicles of the same size have been found in many nerve fibres, suggesting that at least part of the agranular vesicles in the median eminence originate by micro-pinocytosis. The nature of the fibres showing exocytosis is discussed. Attention is drawn to the possibility of identifying types of fibres in the median eminence by the occurrence of exocytosis.The technical assistance of Mrs. R. M. Y. 遗传绝对距离差异显著性检验方法

G regorius提出的用于比较等位基因差异的遗传绝对距离方法可用来比较两个种群或群落的差异,也可比较两个样地是否来自相同的总体。该方法由于能够给出两个分布的具体差异量而在林分直径分布比较中得到广泛应用。在分析G regorius遗传绝对距离应用于群落结构比较的可能性的基础上,提出了该遗传绝对距离的差异显著判别标准,当两个分布的差异dxy≥dα=dm ax.(1-1/k).-0.2 ln(α/2)时,差异显著。为检验所提出的判别差异显著性方法的有效性,特给出了40个模拟林分的直径分布并用K-S检验进行了验证,结果表明所提出的方法与K-S检验的符合率达100%。研究还指出,遗传绝对距离方法可有效进行群落结构比较,它既可进行直径分布检验也可对物种的相似性做出判定,自然也可以用于等位基因的分析。结合研究提出的差异显著性检验方法,从而使度量结构差异量和判断此差异量显著与否的林分结构分析与比较一体化。     

How the mirror-image pattern specified by a janus mutation of Tetrahymena thermophila comes to expression

The initial changes of cell-surface organization that occurred as the recessive janAl (janus) mutation of Tetrahymena thermophila first became expressed were elucidated in a special mating scheme in which old macronuclei homozygous for janA⁺ were synchronously replaced by new macronuclei homozygous for janAl. During this period of onset of expression, the number, regularity, and asymmetry of the ciliary rows remained unchanged. New normal (primary) oral apparatuses (OAs) continued to be formed posterior to old OAs, as in normal cells. At about four fissions after conjugation, abnormal (secondary) OAs with a partial reversal of asymmetry began to appear nearly opposite to the primary OAs, close to but not at the eventual circumferential position of janAl secondary OAs. The array of contractile vacuole pores (CVPs), normally located adjacent to two ciliary rows centered near 22% of the cell circumference to the righ of the primary oral meridian, underwent a two-step transformation: first, the number of adjacent ciliary rows bearing CVPs increased to 3, 4, and sometimes 5, then “skipped” rows appeared within this broadened CVP-arc to split the single set of CVPs into two separated subsets. The CVP transformations occurred gradually and progressively. They began prior to the expression of secondary OAs but accelerated as secondary OAs appeared. As the CVP are became broader, its midpoint shifted somewhat to the right, away from the primary oral meridian, but ended up close to halfway between the primary and secondary oral meridians. The data provide a better fit to an intercalation model than to an alternative double gradient model, suggesting that the janAl mutation alters the large-scale organization of positional values by preventing the expression of a subset of these values and thus provoking reverse-intercalation of the remainder.

The Relative Power of Two Asymptotic Multivariate Tests for Homogeneity in a Contingency Table

In a three way contingency table two multivariate tests for homogeneity have been proposed by the author (1983) a the “catanova” test, which is a trace “metric” test and b the “multinova” test which is determinant based. Both tests are asymptotically distributed as chi-square. In this paper, the power values of the tests are compared and conditions are given for preference of each test.
