A technique, using 14CO2, for measuring the rate of photosynthesis and the distribution of synthesized carbohydrate in the same plant, applied to wheat plants at intervals from 10 days before anthesis until the plants were no longer green, showed that the rate of photosynthesis by the leaves and ears decreased steadily; it was much less for ears than for leaves. The proportion of carbohydrate translocated to the grain was very small at and before anthesis, but increased rapidly afterwards. Integration of these data provided estimates of yield based on physiological components which showed good agreement with measured yields at harvest, though varietal differences in observed yield could not be explained. An experiment in which ears were removed from plants 7 days after anthesis showed that photosynthetic activity was not limited by the size of the ‘sink’ to which photosynthates were translocated.  相似文献

The presence of awns doubled the net photosynthetic rate of wheat ears and also increased the proportion of 14CO2 assimilated by the ear that moved to the grain. The effect of water supply on photosynthesis and movement of assimilates was greater for leaves than ears, so that drought increased the proportion of assimilate contributed by ear photosynthesis to grain filling from 13% to 24% in the awnless ears, and from 34% to 43% in the awned ears. 14C assimilated by the ears was most important to the economy of the upper spikelets and to the distal florets in each spikelet, whereas flag leaf assimilate went mainly to the spikelets in the lower half of the ear, and to the proximal florets. Awns increased grain yield in the dry but not in the irrigated treatment, despite the large contribution of awned ears to grain filling. Either the supply of assimilate did not limit grain yield when water supply was not limiting, or there were compensating disadvantages to awns. However, they did not seem to have any adverse effect on the development of the upper florets, nor did they reduce grain number per ear.

A pot experiment with acid yellow–brown soil was conducted to investigate the interactive effects of molybdenum (Mo) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers on the photosynthetic characteristics of seedlings and grain yield of Brassica napus which is sensitive to soil P and Mo deficiency. Both Mo and P fertilizers were applied at three levels (0 mg Mo kg?1, 0.15 mg Mo kg?1, 0.30 mg Mo kg?1 soil; 0 mg P kg?1, 80 mg P kg?1, 160 mg P kg?1 soil). The results showed that P fertilizer application increased grain yield, soluble sugar concentrations of seedling leaves, DM and P accumulation of seedling shoots of Brassica napus in the absence or presence of Mo fertilizer. In contrast, Mo fertilizer increased these parameters only in the presence of P fertilizer. Mo accumulation in shoots, chlorophyll concentrations and net photosynthesis rate (P n) of seedling leaves were increased by both Mo and P fertilizers, particularly with the combination of the two fertilizers. The results also showed that the Mo and P fertilizers increased photosynthetic rate through two different mechanisms, with Mo increasing photosynthetic activity of mesophyll cells, and P increasing stomatal conductance. The results demonstrate that there was a synergetic effect on photosynthesis and grain yield between Mo and P fertilizers and it is conducive for Brassica napus growth to co-apply the two fertilizers.  相似文献

Direct sowing with non-woven fabric mulch is the new organic rice cultivation system. We studied the effect of topdressing on individual leaf photosynthesis at different position and grain yield in rice plants cultivated by this system. Leaf photosynthetic rate at the different leaf position per plant (P N-LP) of the third and fourth to lower leaves was higher when the topdressing amount was increased. Without topdressing or in no-fertilizers plots, the P N-LP values of lower leaves were very low. The leaf photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (P N-LA) decreased gradually as the leaf position became lower. Again, the P N-LA values of the top-dressed plots at the lower leaves were higher than that of plots without topdressing or without fertilizers. The lower leaves maintained a higher P N because of a higher rate of nitrogen accumulation due to topdressing. The higher rate of photosynthesis in these leaves resulted in better root activity, which contributed to a better ripening percentage and ultimately higher rice grain yield.  相似文献

Electrical signals in plants, namely, the action potential (AP) and variation potential (VP) alter the activity of many processes, including photosynthesis. The functional responses induced by electrical signals vary in direction and amplitude, which might be determined by variable conditions of plants prior to stimulation, by the development stage in particular. In this work, the parameters of VP-induced photosynthetic responses were analyzed at various stages of wheat seedling development. Local wounding of the second leaf in wheat plants induced the propagation of VP and altered the activity of photosynthesis at a distance from the wound location. The amplitude of VP was enlarged when the seedling age increased from 11 to 18 days. The VP-induced photosynthetic response changed with age both qualitatively and quantitatively. The amplitude of VP-induced changes in CO2 assimilation and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) increased with age, which might be due to the increase in VP amplitude and associated changes in Ca2+ and H+ concentrations. The quantum yield of photosystem II photoreaction was subject to age-dependent changes: the photochemical quantum yield (γ(PSII)) was found to increase after VP in young leaves, whereas the decline in γ(PSII) was observed after the VP propagation in mature leaves. The results may explain the diversity of photosynthetic responses caused by the electrical signals.  相似文献

Detached leaf is in the state of increasing water deficit; it is a good experimental model for looking into the hardening effect of adaptation of eight-day-old maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings to short-term drought (five days without watering). The light stage of photosynthesis and photosynthetic CO2/H2O exchange in detached leaves were studied. Specific surface density of leaf tissue (SSDL), the content of chlorophylls a and b, proline, MDA as well as photosynthetic parameters: quantum yield of photosystem II fluorescence, assimilation of CO2, and transpiration at room temperature and light saturation (density of PAR quantum flux of 2000 μmol/(m2 s)) at normal and half atmospheric CO2 concentration were determined. The leaves of seedlings exposed to short-term drought differed from control material by a greater SSDL and higher content of proline. The hardening effect of the stress agent on the dark stage of photosynthesis was detected; it was expressed in the maintenance of the higher photosynthetic CO2 assimilation against control material due to the elevation of stomatal conductance for CO2 diffusing into the leaf. Judging from the lack of differences in the MDA content, short-term drought did not injure photosynthetic membranes. In detached leaves of experimental maize seedlings, photosynthesis was maintained on a higher level than in control material.  相似文献

Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L., cv. Bintje) were grown in a naturally lit glasshouse. Laboratory measurements on leaves at three insertion levels showed a decline with leaf age in photosynthetic capacity and in stomatal conductance at near saturating irradiance. Conductance declined somewhat more with age than photosynthesis, resulting in a smaller internal CO2 concentration in older relative to younger leaves. Leaves with different insertion number behaved similarly. The changes in photosynthesis rate and in nitrogen content with leaf age were closely correlated. When PAR exceeded circa 100 W m–2 the rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance changed proportionally as indicated by a constant internal CO2 concentration. The photosynthesis-irradiance data were fitted to an asymptotic exponential model. The parameters of the model are AMAX, the rate of photosynthesis at infinite irradiance, and EFF, the slope at low light levels. AMAX declined strongly with leaf age, as did EFF, but to a smaller extent. During drought stress photosynthetic capacity declined directly with decreasing water potential (range –0.6 to –1.1 MPa). Initially, stomatal conductance declined faster than photosynthetic capacity.Abbreviations LNx leaf number x, counted in acropetal direction - DAP days after planting - DALA days after leaf appearance - Ci CO2 concentration in the leaf - Ca CO2 concentration in ambient air - LWP leaf water potential - OP osmotic potential - PAR photosynthetically active radiation  相似文献

Contribution of intercellular reflectance to photosynthesis in shade leaves   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2
The potential contribution of intercellular light reflectance to photosynthesis was investigated by infiltrating shade leaves with mineral oil. Infiltration of leaves of Hydrophyllum canadense and Asarum canadense with mineral oil decreased adaxial leaf reflectance but increased transmittance. As a result of the large increase in transmittance, infiltration caused a decrease in absorptance of 25% and 30% at 550 and 750 nm, respectively. Thus, intercellular reflectance increased absorptance in these species by this amount. In a comparison of sun and shade leaves of Acer saccharum and Parthenocissus quinquefolia, oil infiltration decreased absorptance more in shade than in sun leaves. This difference suggests that the higher proportion of spongy mesophyll in shade leaves may increase internal light scattering and thus absorptance. The importance of the spongy mesophyll in increasing internal reflectance was also evident in comparisons of the optics of Populus leaves and in the fluorescence yield of oil-infiltrated leaves of several sun and shade species. Oil infiltration decreased the quantum yield of fluorescence (Fo) by 39–52% for shade leaves but only 21–25% for sun leaves. We conclude that the greater proportion of spongy parenchyma in shade leaves increased intercellular light scattering and thus absorptance. Direct measurements with fibre-optic light probes of the distribution of light inside leaves of Hydrophyllum canadense confirmed that oil infiltration decreased the amount of back-scattered light and that most of the light scattering for this species occurred from the middle of the palisade layer to the middle of the spongy mesophyll. We were not, however, able to assess the potential contribution of reflectance from the internal abaxial epidermis to total internal light scattering in these experiments. Using a mathematical model to compare the response of net photosynthesis (O2, flux) to incident irradiance for control leaves of H. canadense and theoretical leaves with no intercellular reflectance, we calculated that intercellular reflectance caused a 1.97-fold increase in photosynthesis at 20 μmol m?2s?1 (incident photon flux density). This enhancement of absorption and photosynthesis by inter-cellular reflectance, without additional production and maintenance of photosynthetic pigments, may maintain shade leaves above the photosynthetic light compensation point between sunflecks and maintain the light induction state during protracted periods of low diffuse light.  相似文献

Effects of sulfur on photosynthesis in sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L. cv. F58-554H1) were studied by inducing sulfur deficiency and determining changes in the photosynthesis of whole attached leaves and of isolated chloroplasts. The rates of photosynthetic CO2 uptake by intact leaves, photoreduction of ferricyanide, cyclic and noncyclic photophosphorylation of isolated chloroplasts, and the rate of CO2 assimilation by ribulose diphosphate carboxylase, decreased with decrease in total leaf sulfur from 2500 to about 500 μg g−1 dry weight. Sulfur deficiency reduced photosynthesis through an effect on chlorophyll content, which decreased linearly with leaf sulfur, and by decreasing the rate of photosynthesis per unit chlorophyll. There was only a small effect of sulfur deficiency on stomatal diffusion resistance to CO2 until leaf sulfur decreased below 1000 μg g−1 when stomatal resistance became a more significant proportion of the total diffusion resistance to CO2. Light respiration rates were positively correlated with photosynthesis rates and dark respiration was unchanged as leaf sulfur concentrations declined.  相似文献

Effect of assimilate utilization on photosynthetic rate in wheat   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Summary Two weeks after anthesis, when the grain is filling rapidly, the rate of photosynthesis by flag leaves of wheat cv. Gabo was between 20 and 30 mg CO2 dm-2 leaf surface hour-1 under the conditions used. About 45% of flag-leaf assimilates were translocated to the ear, and only about 12% to the roots and young shoots. On removing the ear, net photosynthesis by the flag leaves was reduced by about 50% within 3–15 hours, and there was a marked reduction in the outflow of 14C-labelled assimilates from the flag leaves.Subsequent darkening of all other leaves on plants without ears led to recovery of flag-leaf photosynthesis, as measured by gas analysis and 14CO2 fixation, and to increased translocation of assimilates to the roots and young shoots. Minor changes in the rates of dark respiration accompanied these major, reversible changes in photosynthetic rate. After more than a week in continuous, high-intensity light, the rate of photosynthesis by flag leaves of intact plants had fallen considerably, but could be restored again by a period in darkness, or by inhibiting photosynthesis in the ears by spraying them with DCMU. The inhibition of ear photosynthesis increased translocation of labelled assimilates from the flag leaf to the ears, without affecting leaf sugar levels. The application of TIBA to the culm below the ear inhibited auxin movement throught the culm, but had no influence on flag-leaf photosynthesis. These results suggest that, at least in this system, photosynthesis by the flag leaf is regulated directly by the demand for assimilates from the flag leaf and not indirectly through action in the leaf of auxins produced by the sink organs.  相似文献

In the present work, the aim was to study the combined effects of high irradiance (about 1 000 μmol·m–2·s–1) on the effects of O3 (150 nL·L–1 for 2 h) on the photosynthetic process of primary pinto (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves. The CO2 assimilation rate significantly decreased in high light and/or O3-treated leaves, as did the stomatal conductance. The present work shows that changes occur in photosynthesis-related parameters due to light stress. Photoinhibition was detected as a decrease in the Fv/Fm ratio. This indicates that the light treatment considerably exceeded the photoprotective capacity and resulted in significant photon damage. Moreover O3 fumigation alone determined an impairment of the photosynthetic process, that in this case is related to the dark reactions of photosynthesis as also showed by the strong increase in (1-qP). The data presented in this paper illustrate the complexity of photosynthetic response to high light intensities and ozone, which are two stress factors that often occur simultaneously under natural conditions. High light can modify the reaction of leaves to ozone treatment by reducing the chloroplastic electron transport rate and the quantum yield for PSII photochemistry. Thus, high light seems to enhance the detrimental effects of ozone on photosynthesis.  相似文献

The present study was performed to investigate the adjustment of the rate parameters of the light and dark reactions of photosynthesis to the natural growth light in leaves of an overstorey species, Betula pendula Roth, a subcanopy species, Tilia cordata P. Mill., and a herb, Solidago virgaurea L., growing in a natural plant community in Järvselja, Estonia. Shoots were collected from the site and individual leaves were measured in a laboratory applying a standardized routine of kinetic gas exchange, Chl fluorescence and 820 nm transmittance measurements. These measurements enabled the calculations of the quantum yield of photosynthesis and rate constants of excitation capture by photochemical and non-photochemical quenchers, rate constant for P700+ reduction via the cytochrome b6f complex with and without photosynthetic control, actual maximum and potential (uncoupled) electron transport rate, stomatal and mesophyll resistances for CO2 transport, Km(CO2) and Vm of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) in vivo. In parallel, N, Chl and Rubisco contents were measured from the same leaves. No adjustment toward higher quantum yield in shade compared with sun leaves was observed, although relatively more N was partitioned to the light-harvesting machinery in shade leaves ( H. Eichelmann et al., 2004 ). The electron transport rate through the Cyt b6f complex was strongly down-regulated under saturating light compared with darkness, and this was observed under atmospheric, as well as saturating CO2 concentration. In vivo Vm measurements of Rubisco were lower than corresponding reported measurements in vitro, and the kcat per reaction site varied widely between leaves and growth sites. The correlation between Rubisco Vm and the photosystem I density was stronger than between Vm and the density of Rubisco active sites. The results showed that the capacity of the photosynthetic machinery decreases in shade-adjusted leaves, but it still remains in excess of the actual photosynthetic rate. The photosynthetic control systems that are targeted to adjust the photosynthetic rate to meet the plant's needs and to balance the partial reactions of photosynthesis, down-regulate partial processes of photosynthesis: excess harvested light is quenched non-photochemically; excess electron transport capacity of Cyt b6f is down-regulated by ΔpH-dependent photosynthetic control; Rubisco is synthesized in excess, and the number of activated Rubisco molecules is controlled by photosystem I-related processes. Consequently, the nitrogen contained in the components of the photosynthetic machinery is not used at full efficiency. The strong correlation between leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic performance is not due to the nitrogen requirements of the photosynthetic apparatus, but because a certain amount of energy must be captured through photosynthesis to maintain this nitrogen within a leaf.  相似文献

Abstract Two models describing the relationship between net photosynthesis of leaves of C3 plants, light intensity and CO2 concentration in the substomatal cavities are described and fitted to data obtained in a constant environment cabinet and in the field. The first model, based on a resistance analogue for gaseous diffusion and Michaelis-Menten biochemistry, gave the best fit to the data. For the field data, four parameters were required–quantum yield, mesophyll resistance, ‘dayrsquo; respiration and a photorespiration constant. For the cabinet data, a parameter representing the limiting photosynthesis rate was required. The second model, based on a recent more rigorous biochemical analysis of photosynthesis, contains five parameters–quantum yield, maximum carboxylation rate, ‘day’ respiration, a photorespiration constant and a maximum electron transport rate. It fitted the data less well.  相似文献

In northern China, large-spike wheat (Triticum aestivum L) is considered to have significant potential for increasing yields due to its greater single-plant productivity despite its lower percentage of effective tillers, and increasing the plant density is an effective means of achieving a higher grain yield. However, with increases in plant density, the amount of solar radiation intercepted by lower strata leaves is decreased and the rate of leaf senescence is accelerated. Row spacing can be manipulated to optimize the plant spatial distribution under high plant density, therefore improving light conditions within the canopy. Consequently, field experiments were conducted from 2010 to 2012 to investigate whether changes in row spacing under high plant density led to differences in canopy apparent photosynthesis (CAP), individual leaf photosynthesis and grain yield. Two different spike-type winter wheat cultivars, Jimai22 (a small-spike cultivar as a control cultivar) and Wennong6 (a large-spike cultivar), were grown at a constant plant density of 3,600,000 plants ha–1 (a relatively higher plant density) over a wide range of row spacing as follows: 5-cm row spacing (R0), 15-cm row spacing (R1), 25-cm conventional row spacing (R2), and 35-cm row spacing (R3). The two-year investigations revealed that increased row spacing exhibited a significantly higher light transmission ratio (LT), which improved light conditions within the canopy; however, excessive light leakage losses in R2 and R3 treatments were not favorable to improved irradiation energy utilization efficiency. Aboveground biomass accumulation was influenced by row spacing. Two spike-type wheat accumulated greater biomass under 15-cm row spacing compared to other row spacing treatments, although a markedly improved photosynthetic rate (PN), effective quantum yield of photosystem II (ΦPSII) and maximal efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (Fv/Fm) in the penultimate and third leaves were observed in R2 and R3 treatments. At the same time, a longer duration of CAP and green leaf area was maintained in R1 during grain filling. Compared with conventional row spacing, Wennong6 in R1 treatment obtained 21.0% and 19.1% higher grain yield in 2011 and 2012, respectively, while for Jimai22 it increased by 11.3% and 11.4%, respectively. A close association of yield with CAP and LAI at mid-grain filling was observed. In conclusion, for the tested growing conditions, decreasing the row spacing to an optimal distance (15 cm) maintained a longer duration of LAI and CAP during grain filling, made a better coordination of group and individual leaf photosynthesis, and accumulated higher aboveground biomass, leading to a greater grain yield. In addition, Wennong6 had a more rational canopy architecture than Jimai22 (improved LT and higher LAI) and CAP under 15-cm row spacing, leading to a higher grain yield, which indicated that the large-spike type cultivar has the potential to obtain higher yields by increasing plant density through optimum row spacing allocation (15 cm).  相似文献

Leaf blades of the late-sown winter wheat produced the major portion, i.e., more than 60 %, of the total 14C-photosynthates at grain filling, but ear (rachis and glumes) only about 15 %, sheaths about 11 %, and stem internodes about 11 %. The change of plant density in this experiment had little influence on the 14CO2-photoassimilation of the ear (rachis and glumes), flag leaf lamina, sheaths and stem internodes, but markedly affected photosynthesis of the second, the third and lower leaves. The photosynthetic rate [expressed as specific radioactivity, s-1 kg-1(d.m.)] and the amount of 14CO2 photosynthates decreased significantly in the second, the third and other lower leaves at a high plant density. Upon grain-filling of the late-sown wheat, the grain was the major importer of photosynthates. Yet partitioning to the stem internodes depended on the plant density. Stem was the importer of photosynthates at a low plant density, but the exporter at a high plant density. In plants at a low plant density a fairly large proportion of photosynthates was distributed into the roots. The middle and lower above-ground parts of the late-sown wheat at a high plant density decreased or lost their function early. As a result, the plant senesced earlier. However, the grain setting, filling and yielding were restricted. An appropriately low plant density was suitable for prolonging the function of the middle and lower organs, delaying the senescence of plant, increasing the source supply for grain filling, and improving the grain yield. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We have compared the ability of shadegrown clones of Solamum dulcamara L. from shade and sun habitats to acclimate to bright light, as a function of nitrogen nutrition before and after transfer to bright light. Leaves of S. dulcamara grown in the shade with 0.6 mM NO 3 - have similar photosynthetic properties as leaves of plants grown with 12.0 mM NO 3 - . When transferred to bright light for 1–2 d the leaves of these plants show substantial photoinhibition which is characterized by about 50% decrease in apparent quantum yield and a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis in air at light saturation. Photoinhibition of leaf photosynthesis is associated with reduction in the variable component of low-temperature fluorescence emission, and with loss of in-vitro electron transport, especially of photosystem II-dependent processes. We find no evidence for ecotypic differentiation in the potential for photosynthetic acclimation among shade and sun clones of S. dulcamara, or of differentiation with respect to nitrogen requirements for acclimation. Recovery from photoinhibition and subsequent acclimation of photosynthesis to bright light only occurs in leaves of plants provided with 12.0 mM NO 3 - . In these, apparent quantum yield is fully restored after 14 d, and photosynthetic acclimation is shown by an increase in light-saturated photosynthesis in air, of light-and CO2-saturated photosynthesis, and of the initial slope of the CO2-response curve. The latter changes are highly correlated with changes in ribulose-bisphosphate-carboxylase activity in vitro. Plants supplied with 0.6 mM NO 3 - show incomplete recovery of apparent quantum yield after 14 d, but CO2-dependent leaf photosynthetic parameters return to control levels.Symbols and abbreviations Fo initial level of fluorescence at 77 K - Fm maximum level of fluorescence at 77 K - Fv variable components of fluorescence at 77 K (Fv=Fm-Fo) - PSI, PSII photosystem I and II, respectively - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate - RuBPCase ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39)  相似文献

Analyses of CO2 exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were carried out to assess photosynthetic performance during senescence of maize leaves. Senescent leaves displayed a significant decrease in CO2 assimilatory capacity accompanied by a decrease in stomatal conductance and an increase in intercellular CO2 concentration. The analyses of fluorescence quenching under steady-state photosynthesis showed that senescence resulted in an increase in non-photochemical quenching and a decrease in photo-chemical quenching. It also resulted in a decrease in the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PSII reaction centres and the quantum yield of PSII electron transport, but had very little effect on the maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry. The results determined from the fast fluorescence induction kinetics indicated an increase in the proportion of QB-non-reducing PSII reaction centres and a decrease in the rate of QA reduction in senescent leaves. Theoretical analyses of fluorescence parameters under steady-state photosynthesis suggest that the increase in the non-photochemical quenching was due to an increase in the rate constant to thermal dissipation of excitation energy by PSII and that the decrease in the quantum yield of PSII electron transport was associated with a decrease in the rate constant of PSII photochemistry. Based on these results, it is suggested that the decrease in the quantum yield of PSII electron transport in senescent leaves was down-regulated by an increase in the proportion of QB-non-reducing PSII reaction centres and in the non-photochemical quenching. The photosynthetic electron transport would thus match the decreased demand for ATP and NADPH in carbon assimilation which was inhibited significantly in senescent leaves.Key words: Chlorophyll fluorescence, gas exchange, maize (Zea mays L.), photochemical and non-photochemical quenching, photosystem II photochemistry.   相似文献

Significant genetic variation in leaf photosynthetic rate has been reported in grain sorghum [Sorghum biocolor (L.) Moench]. The relationships between leaf photosynthetic rates and total biomass production and grain yield remain to be established and formed the purpose of this experiment. Twenty two grain sorghum parent lines were tested in the field during the 1988 growing season under well-watered and water-limited conditions. Net carbon assimilation rates were measured at mid-day during the 30 day period from panicle initiation to head exertion on upper-most fully expanded leaves using a portable photosynthesis system (LI-6200). Total biomass and grain production were determined at physiological maturity. The lines exhibited significant genetic variation in leaf photosynthetic rate, total biomass production and grain yield. Significant positive correlations existed between leaf photosynthesis and total biomass and grain production under both well-watered and water-limited conditions. The results suggest that leaf photosynthetic rate measured prior to flowering is a good indicator of productivity in grain sorghum.  相似文献

The role of ear photosynthesis in grain filling was studied in a number of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var durum L.) landraces and varieties from the Middle East, North Africa, and from the collections of ‘Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique’ (INRA, France) and ‘Centro International de Mejora de Maiz y Trigo’ (CIMMYT, Mexico). Plants were grown in the field in a Mediterranean climate. Flag leaves (blade plus sheath) and ears were kept in the dark from 1 week after anthesis to maturity which reduced grain weight by 22.4% and 59.0%, respectively. In a further experiment, the carbon isotope discrimination ratio (Δ) of ear bracts, awns and flag leaves was measured on samples taken at anthesis and on mature kernels. The mean value of Δ for the water soluble fraction of bracts (17.0‰) and awns (17.7‰) were lower than those of leaves (19.5‰) and fairly similar to those of kernels (17.4‰) averaged across all genotypes. Data indicate that most of the photosynthates in the grain come from ear parts and not from flag leaves. In addition, a higher water use efficiency (WUE) of ear parts than of the flag leaf is suggested by their lower Δ values. Gas exchange in ears and flag leaves was measured during grain filling. Averaged over all genotypes, CO2 diffusive conductance was about five times higher in the flag leaf than in the spike (with distal portions of awns outside the photosynthetic chamber) 2 weeks after anthesis. In absolute terms, the dark respiration rate (Rd) was greater than the net photosynthesis rate (Pn) by a factor of 1.74 in the spike, whereas Rd was much smaller, only 22.1, 65.7 and 24.8% of Pn in blade, sheath and awns, respectively. Data indicate that photosynthesis, and hence the water use efficiency (photosynthesis/transpiration), is greatly underestimated in ears because of the high rates of respiration which diminish the measured rates of net CO2 exchange. Results of 13C discrimination and gas exchange show that genotypes from North Africa have higher WUE than those from the Middle East. The high Rd values of ears as well as their low diffusive conductance suggest that CO2 from respiration may be used as source of carbon for ear photosynthesis. In the same way, the anatomy of glumes, for example, supports the role of bracts using internal CO2 as source of photosynthesis. In the first experiment, the Δ in mature grains from culms with darkened ears compared with control culms provided further evidence in support of this hypothesis. Thus, the Δ from kernels of control plants was 0.40 higher than that from ear-darkened plants, probably because of some degree of refixation (recycling) of respired CO2 in the grains.  相似文献
