Apparent competition, through the action of shared natural enemies, is frequently suggested as a possible mechanism underlying the impact of invasive alien species on native species, but examples are rare, particularly in insects. A previous study showed that the beech leaf mining weevil, Orchestes fagi, was significantly less abundant close to horse-chestnut trees infested by the invasive horse-chestnut leaf mining moth, Cameraria ohridella, compared to control sites. Apparent competition through the sharing of natural enemies was proposed as a potential mechanism underlying this effect. To test the occurrence of apparent competition between the two leaf miner species, three observational studies and one experimental manipulation were carried out in Switzerland during 3 years. The total mortality, parasitism, predation and parasitoid diversity of larvae and pupae of O. fagi were compared between sites with and without horse-chestnut trees severely attacked by C. ohridella. Total mortality and predation rates of O. fagi were not significantly different between sites with and sites without C. ohridella. Despite a large overlap between the parasitoid complexes of the two leaf miners, parasitism of O. fagi was found to be positively influenced by the presence of horse-chestnuts infested by C. ohridella in only one of the four studies and only for 1 year. Similarly, parasitoid diversity was not higher near infested horse-chestnut trees compared to control sites. Thus, little evidence for apparent competition was found. Possible reasons, including possible insufficiencies in the experimental circumstances and design, are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of the alien horse-chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella, on native fauna was studied by comparing the species richness of native leaf miner communities and the abundance of selected native leaf miner species in the presence and absence of horse-chestnut trees infested by C. ohridella, in various environments in Europe. The species richness of native leaf miner communities in Switzerland was lower at sites where C. ohridella was present than at control sites. In Switzerland, France and Bulgaria, several native leaf miner species were significantly less abundant in the vicinity of infested horse-chestnuts. The native species most affected by the presence of the invasive alien species were those occurring early in the year and sharing their parasitoid complex with C. ohridella. These results suggest apparent competition mediated by shared natural enemies because these are the only link between C. ohridella and native leaf miners using other food resources.  相似文献

The juvenile development and survival, and demographic parameters of the predatory mite Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) fed on pollen of castor bean, tulip, apple, Christmas cactus, horse-chestnut, maize, and birch were assessed under laboratory conditions. Deprivation of food and pollen of castor bean plants resulted in 100 % juvenile mite mortality. Feeding mites with tulip and horse-chestnut pollen resulted in the shortest development and the highest total fecundity. Adult mites fed on birch, tulip, maize, and apple pollen lived significantly longer compared with those fed on pollen of horse-chestnut and Christmas cactus. The intrinsic rate of natural increase ranged between 0.1013 ♀♀//day for maize and 0.1806 ♀♀//day for horse-chestnut pollen as food. Net reproductive rate was the lowest when fed with maize pollen and highest when fed with horse-chestnut pollen. Population doubling time was highest on maize pollen and shortest on horse-chestnut pollen. Our study revealed that birch, tulip, horse-chestnut, apple, and maize pollen can be used by N. cucumeris from early spring to late summer as a suitable alternative food in periods when prey in the field are scarce or absent.  相似文献

The important role of semiochemicals in the interactions between plants and insects has been extensively investigated. The volatiles produced by oak trees are thought to attract the ambrosia beetle Platypus quercivorus (Murayama), which causes wilt disease in Quercus trees, resulting in widespread damage. In the present study, we hypothesized that (a) P. quercivorus is attracted to the leaf volatiles emitted by host trees and (b) the response of P. quercivorus to leaf volatiles is affected by flight. An experiment was performed to survey the preferences of both sexes of P. quercivorus for the leaf volatiles of Quercus crispula Blume at various stages of leaf deterioration, represented by different number of days after cutting. Additionally, the effect of flight on both sexes was evaluated by testing the beetle flight on a flight mill. The results showed that P. quercivorus was attracted to the volatiles emitted from fresh leaves and was not attracted to those emitted from dry leaves. This suggests that leaf volatiles from healthy hosts are primary attractants for P. quercivorus. Further, males exhibited increased olfactory responses to leaf volatiles as their flight duration increased, whereas the opposite pattern was observed in females. These results suggest that the different ecological roles of the sexes contribute to differences in olfactory responses.  相似文献

Summary Male and female plants of Rumex acetosella were grown on a moisture gradient to measure possible differences in the drought tolerance of the sexes. The growth of both sexes declined under water stress but males were significantly more drought tolerant. This could not be explained by greater water use efficiency in the male plants; measured rates of both photosynthesis and leaf conductance did not differ significantly between the sexes. Multiple discriminant analysis showed that the sexes differed at all moisture regimes in their overall patterns of biomass allocation. Males had proportionately greater investment in root and leaf tissue which could explain their growth advantage over females under water stress. Despite essentially equal water use efficiencies, on a per plant basis males, with more leaf and root biomass, could fix more carbon and more rapidly exploit the local water resource than females. Thus the pattern of biomass allocation rather than intrinsic physiological differences appears to explain the greater drought tolerance of male plants of Rumex acetosella.  相似文献

Summary The antennal lobe of both sexes of the silk moth Bombyx mori contains 55–60 ventrally located antennal glomeruli; in addition, that of the male contains a dorsal macroglomerular complex (MGC). A group of identifiable glomeruli consisting of two lateral large glomeruli (LLG) and four medial small glomeruli (MSG) is present in both sexes, but the LLG are greatly enlarged in the female. A MGC is also present in the male gypsy moth Lymantria dispar and male giant silk moth Antheraea polyphemus. The MGC in all of these species is organized into 3–4 distinct levels of glomeruli. Antennal sensory fibers were stained by cobalt backfills in B. mori, A. polyphemus, and L. dispar. Most fibers stained from cut long hairs (sensilla trichodea) projected to MGC in males and LLG in both sexes of B. mori. The distribution of fibers in the MGC of B. mori was topographically biased in that a majority of fibers from anterior branches projected medially in MGC while most fibers from posterior branches projected laterally or anteriorly. Terminal arborizations of single fibers were each restricted to a single glomerular level of the MGC. Fibers projecting to the posterior antennal center were frequently stained in cut-hair and control preparations, apparently by uptake of cobalt through intact sensilla on flagellar branches.  相似文献

Allocation to vegetative growth and sexual reproduction was investigated throughout the growing season in the dioecious sedge, Carex picta, under natural conditions and following experimental manipulations. Measurements taken on unmanipulated plants showed that the sexes did not differ in the total amount of biomass they allocated to either growth or reproduction. The relatively equal investment in reproduction by the two sexes is contrary to other studies, the majority of which show greater investment in reproduction by females. Two features of the reproductive biology of C. picta may account for the equal investment: the fruit are relatively inexpensive because they are uniovulate and nonfleshy, and the stamens are relatively expensive because C. picta is wind pollinated. In contrast to the lack of differences in the amount of allocation, there were differences between the sexes in the timing of allocation to growth and reproduction: males allocated more to reproduction and less to growth up to the time of flowering, whereas females showed this pattern during the time of fruit maturation. Defoliation and inflorescence removal experiments showed that a trade-off within plants between growth and reproduction does exist. In addition, the defoliation experiment revealed a difference in the response of the two sexes: defoliated tillers on males showed a reduction in growth, whereas defoliated tillers on females did not. Overall, the data support the idea that differences in the timing of reproductive expenditure are as important as the amount of expenditure in determining many aspects of the life history strategies of the two sexes.  相似文献

The role of habitat use in generating individual variation in fitness has rarely been examined empirically in natural populations of long‐lived mammals, particularly for both sexes simultaneously. This is the case despite the increase in studies attempting to understand evolutionary change in such populations. Using data from the St. Kilda Soay sheep population, we quantified the association between lifetime reproductive performance (lifetime breeding and reproductive success) and the proportion of the home range covered by a key grass species, H. lanatus, for 490 females and 304 males. Increased H. lanatus cover was associated only with increased female lifetime reproductive success, but increased lifetime breeding success for both sexes, arising through increased male longevity and increased female fecundity. This work suggests that improved understanding of the causes and consequences of fitness differences will likely require us to better account for habitat‐derived individual variation, and to do so for the sexes appropriately.  相似文献

Sexual communication often involves signal exchanges between the sexes, or duetting, in which mate choice is expressed through response signals. With both sexes acting as signalers and receivers, variation in the signals of males and females may be important for mate choice, reproductive isolation, and divergence. In the Enchenopa binotata species complex – a case study of sympatric speciation in which vibrational duetting may have an important role – male signals are species‐specific, females choose among males on the basis of signal traits that reflect species and individual differences, and female preferences have exerted divergent selection on male signals. Here, we describe variation in female signals in the E. binotata species complex. We report substantial species differences in the spectral and temporal features of female signals, and in their timing relative to male signals. These differences were similar in range to differences in male signals in the E. binotata complex. We consider processes that might contribute to divergence in female signals, and suggest that signal evolution in the E. binotata complex may be influenced by mate choice in both sexes.  相似文献

Genetic correlations of the wing form and the relative wing length between females and males were estimated in the oriental chinch bug, Cavelerius saccharivorus, by calculating the correlation between the sexes of the proportion macropterous or the mean relative wing length in full-sib families obtained from different wing forms of parents emerged in a high density population. There was a significantly positive genetic correlation between the sexes in both the proportion macropterous and the mean relative wing length. However, the appearance rate of macropters tended to be much lower in males than in females under the rearing conditions which promote the appearance of macropters. This was evident especially in the offspring of brachypterous parents. These indicated that in C. saccharivorus the wing polymorphism of males is not a simple result of the genetic correlation of wing morphology between the two sexes. It was considered that both of the female and male fitness advantages to wing reduction, as well as the genetic correlation between the sexes, would influence the evolution of wing polymorphism in this species.  相似文献

It is widely recognized that there are basic conflicts between the resource needs of a plant for paternal versus maternal functions. In dioecious species, these divergent demands, and the selection pressures they impose, can lead to the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The present study was conducted to assess the potential for the evolution of sexual dimorphism in Silene latifolia by evaluating the genetic variation and genetic correlation between characters and between the sexes for a range of growth and reproductive characters. Sexual dimorphism is largely restricted to reproductive characters, particularly flower number and flower size. A canonical correlation analysis revealed considerable intercorrelation between growth characters, such as germination date, height, and leaf size, and reproductive characters; plants that grow fast early on also flower earlier, and plants that produce big leaves also produce big flowers. There was genetic variation for several sexually dimorphic characters; much of the focus in this analysis was on flower size, particularly calyx diameter. Finally, genetic correlations within and between the sexes were found that limit the rate of evolutionary divergence between the sexes. The genetic results suggest that S. latifolia has been subject to divergent selection on the two sexes for a long period of time, bringing about a gradual fixation of sex-limited gene effects, so that the remaining genetic effects are expressed in both sexes. Genetic correlations between the sexes that arise from this residual variation impose limits on further evolutionary change.  相似文献

Populations ofRumex acetosa andR. acetosella were studied during two growth seasons. The ramet sex ratios ofR. acetosa were always female-biased. InR. acetosella the sex ratios expressed more variation but were mostly female-biased. In both species the sex ratios commonly varied between subpopulations reflecting a partial spatial segregation of the sexes. No marked differences between sexes in vegetative vigour were detected in either species. Interactions between sex ratios, various soil characteristics and population densities were determined. Possible mechanisms for causing biased sex ratios and partial spatial segregation of the sexes are discussed.  相似文献

In marsupials, both sexes possess a cremaster muscle, that of the female being attached to the mammary gland and surrounding subcutaneous tissues. In the grey short‐tailed opossum, the muscle in both sexes has a distinct proximal origin from the anterior superior iliac spine. The number of muscle fibres is higher in male than in female opossums on average, but the difference is not statistically significant. Retrograde tracing, achieved by injecting B‐cholera toxin into the muscle, showed that labelled neurons occupied several spinal cord segments, the bulk being in L2–L4. There was no overall sex difference in the number of labelled neurons. It is concluded that cremaster muscles are present in both sexes of the grey short‐tailed opossum Monodelphis domestica, contain approximately equal numbers of fibres, and differ only in their insertion target. Since the motor innervation also shows no dimorphisms in this species, it is concluded that the whole neuromuscular complex is homologous in the two sexes. This is in marked contrast to the situation in adult eutherian mammals where the muscle is possesed by males only, and where the cremasteric nucleus is highly dimorphic in terms of motor neuron numbers.  相似文献

Female and male first meiotic prophase are analyzed in the grasshopper Arcyptera microptera with special reference to the heteropycnotic chromatin. Differences in the behaviour of the megameric and X-chromosomes, in nuclear size and in the response to C-banding treatment are described. The evidence for a distinctive meiotic prophase in both sexes is compared with results obtained in other species of grasshoppers by other authors using more advanced stages. Abstract. The selection of habitats with favourable temperature by the apple blossom weevil Anthonomus pomorum (L.) is investigated in a temperature gradient arena with a range of approximately 0–15 °C. Single female and male weevils are tested in the arena 2, 4 and 6 days after termination of diapause, during photophase and during scotophase. During photophase, weevils of both sexes choose the warmest part of the temperature gradient arena, irrespective of the time elapsed after diapause. During scotophase, high temperature is favoured by male weevils, as well as by females 2 and 4 days after diapause. However, 6 days after termination of diapause, females show no thermal preference in the temperature gradient arena during scotophase, indicating that thermal choice of female A. pomorum in the scotophase changes with time after the termination of diapause. The results suggest that both sexes benefit from thermoregulation by habitat choice during photophase when the weevils are flight active and colonize apple trees.  相似文献

Neomysidion rahotsu, a new genus and species of the siphonostomatoid family Nicothoidae Dana, 1849, is described from the marsupium of the mysid Siriella okadai Ii in the shallow waters of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. This is the first record of nicothoids parasitic on mysids in Asian waters. The new genus is closely related to the three other mysid-infesting nicothoid genera, Aspidoecia Giard & Bonnier, 1889, Mysidion Hansen, 1897 and Hansenulus Heron & Damkaer, 1986, but is distinguishable by: the trunk of adult females being remarkably transformed at maturity; the male cephalosome covered with numerous rounded knobs posterodorsally; the absence of caudal rami in the female; three-segmented antennules in both sexes; two-segmented antenna in the male; remarkable sexual dimorphism in the maxillae; the presence of a pair of spinulate sclerites between the maxillae in both sexes; three- segmented maxillipeds in both sexes; the absence of legs 1 to 5 in the female; the presence of two pairs of legs in the male; and egg-sacs laid free.  相似文献

The Midas cichlid, Cichlasoma citrinellum, is monogamous and biparental. Because of competition for limited spawning sites and intense predation on their young, vigorous defense of their territory is essential. Although both sexes engage in defense, they differ in aggressiveness. The aggressive responses of both sexes were measured by counting the number of bites and bumps each fish directed toward its own mirror image. The size of the fish's genital papilla was also recorded to estimate its reproductive state. Compared with females, males had higher median mirror scores with greater variance. The scores of individual males were also more consistent through time than were those of females. Females close to spawning had the highest mirror scores, whereas male scores were highest early in the reproductive cycle. Selection has apparently favored aggressiveness in both sexes. We argue, however, that differences in aggression are the result of selection acting dissimilarly on the two sexes.  相似文献

Multiple mating by both sexes is common among sexually reproducing animals. Small hive beetles (SHB), Aethina tumida, are parasites of bee nests endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and have become a widespread invasive species. Despite the considerable economic damages they can cause, their basic biology remains poorly understood. Here we show that male and female small hive beetles can mate multiple times, suggesting that costs for mating are low in this species. In an invasive A. tumida population in the United States, a combination of laboratory experiments for males and paternity analysis with eight polymorphic DNA microsatellite markers for field-caught females were used to estimate the number of mating by both sexes. The data show that females and males can mate multiple times—females mated with up to eight males, whereas males mated with at least seven females. The results also showed that A. tumida displayed a skewed paternity, although this was not consistent among the tested females. Thus, first or last male advantage seem to be unlikely in A. tumida. Our observations that individuals of both sexes of A. tumida can mate multiple times opens new research avenues for examining drivers of multiple mating and determining the role it may play in promoting biological invasions.  相似文献
