Occurrence of Bacillus thuringiensis in Fresh Waters of Japan   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Bacillus thuringiensis was recovered at a relatively high frequency from both running and still fresh waters in natural environments of Kyushu, Japan. Of 107 water samples examined, 53 (49.5%) contained this organism. The frequency of B. thuringiensis colonies was 4.4% among 4414 colonies of the Bacillus cereus/B. thuringiensis group. The density of this bacterium in fresh waters averaged 0.45 cfu/ml. Serologically, B. thuringiensis isolates were assigned to 26 H serotypes. Of these, H14/36 (H serovar israelensis/malaysiensis) was the predominant, followed by the serotypes H3abc (kurstaki), H27 (mexicanensis), H3ad (sumiyoshiensis), and H35 (seoulensis). Of 195 isolates, 52 (26.7%) exhibited larvicidal activity against aquatic Diptera; 21 killed Culex pipiens molestus (Culicidae) only, and 31 were active on both the culicine mosquito and the moth-fly, Clogmia albipunctata (Psychodidae). In total, 366 birds representing 55 species in 24 families and eight orders, were examined for chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) in two high‐altitude localities in Yunnan Province, China. In Ailaoshan, almost all of the birds examined were resident passeriforms, of which 36% were parasitized by chewing lice. In Jinshanyakou, most birds were on migration, and included both passerine and non‐passerine birds. Of the passerine birds caught in Jinshanyakou, only one bird (0.7%) was parasitized by chewing lice. The prevalence of Myrsidea and Brueelia‐complex lice on birds caught in Ailaoshan was higher than in previous reports. Of the chewing lice identifiable to species level, three represent new records for China: Actornithophilus hoplopteri (Mjöberg, 1910), Maculinirmus ljosalfar Gustafsson & Bush, 2017 and Quadraceps sinensis Timmermann, 1954. In total, 17 new host records are included, of which we describe two as new species in the Brueelia‐complex: Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) ailaoshanensis sp. nov. ex Schoeniparus dubius dubius (Hume, 1874) and G. (C.) montisodalis sp. nov. ex Fulvetta manipurensis tonkinensis Delacour & Jabouille, 1930. Of 30 bats belonging to four species, only one species, Brachyphylla cavernarum, yielded positive for Histoplasma capsulatun. Bats were collected at the Aguas Buenas Caves in Puerto Rico. The other species are: Artibeus jamaicensis, Monophyllus redmani portoricensis, and Erophylla bibombifrons; these resulted negative for the fungus.  相似文献

One hundred and seventy-two strains of Escherichia coli isolated from diarrheal patients in Beijing, P. R. China, were analyzed for plasmid DNA profile, HEp-2 cell adherence ability and reactivity to 10 previously described DNA probes. They had not been recognized as pathogenic E. coli in China. Of the 110 strains tested, 76 (69%) contained one or multiple large plasmids. Of the 71 strains with the large plasmids 64 could adhere to HEp-2 cells. Of the 172 strains, 102 (59.3%) were hybridized with at least one of the 10 probes. Of those, seven strains hybridized with enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC) probe. Their serotypes were O128 (two strains), O6 (one strain), and O111 (one strain). Three strains were untypable. Six and three strains were hybridized with enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) attaching and effacing genes (eae) or EPEC adherence factor (EAF) probe, respectively. Two non-O157: H7 strains hybridized with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) probe. Seventy-two strains (41.9%) hybridized with shiga-like toxin 2 or 1 (SLT2 or SLT1) probes. Among the SLT1 or SLT2 probe-positive strains, 54 hybridized with invasive (INV) plasmid probe developed for identification of enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) and Shigella species. The INV and SLT probe-positive strains might represent a new variety of verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC).  相似文献

Summary Insertion of the transposable genetic element Tn1 into different sites of plasmid ColE1 results in a number of mutant phenotypes. Whereas all plasmids examined were present in normal amount, all showed reduced immunity to killing by colicin E1. Of six insertions isolated after conjugation, five fail to produce colicin, are conjugally proficient (transmissible), and map within a 500 nucleotide region of the genome. The other is conjugally deficient, produces colicin normally and maps close to two others with a similar phenotype isolated after transformation. Of four others isolated after transformation, two have similar properties to the original five transmissible plasmids. The other two are nontransmissible and produce colicin. Non-transmissibility is correlated with reduced relaxation complex. Patterns of protein synthesis in minicels by ColE1 and ColE1:: Tn1 plasmids have been examined: all ColE1 plasmids containing Tn1 show an altered pattern of ColE1 protein synthesis in addition to three presumptive Tn1-specified proteins, one of which is shown to be -lactamase. ColE1:: Tn1 plasmids can be inserted into the conjugative plasmid R64drd11 to form a cointegrate in which ColE1 and Tn1 function can be expressed.  相似文献

Ticks were collected during March–July 2015 from dogs by veterinarians throughout the U.K. and used to estimate current prevalences and distributions of pathogens. DNA was extracted from 4750 ticks and subjected to polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis to identify Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) and Babesia (Piroplasmida: Babesiidae) species. Of 4737 ticks [predominantly Ixodes ricinus Linneaus (Ixodida: Ixodidae)], B. burgdorferi s.l. was detected in 94 (2.0%). Four Borrelia genospecies were identified: Borrelia garinii (41.5%); Borrelia afzelli (31.9%); Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (25.5%), and Borrelia spielmanii (1.1%). One Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille (Ixodida: Ixodidae), collected from a dog with a history of travel outside the U.K., was positive for B. garinii. Seventy ticks (1.5%) were positive for Babesia spp. Of these, 84.3% were positive for Babesia venatorum, 10.0% for Babesia vulpes sp. nov., 2.9% for Babesia divergens/Babesia capreoli and 1.4% for Babesia microti. One isolate of Babesia canis was detected in a Dermacentor reticulatus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) tick collected from a dog that had recently travelled to France. Prevalences of B. burgdorferi s.l. and Babesia spp. did not differ significantly between different regions of the U.K. The results map the widespread distribution of B. burgdorferi s.l. and Babesia spp. in ticks in the U.K. and highlight the potential for the introduction and establishment of exotic ticks and tick‐borne pathogens.  相似文献

This study investigated the molecular prevalence of oral trichomonads in household dogs. Of the 144 dogs, 21 (14.6%, 21/144) tested positive for oral trichomonads. The prevalence was significantly higher in dogs with severe gingivitis (gingival index 3: 30.0%, 8/26) than that in normal dogs (gingival index 0: 2.7%, 1/37). Therefore, an interaction between oral trichomonads and the development of periodontal disease is suggested. Of the 21 positive samples, 16 isolates were T. brixi, four isolates were T. tenax, and one was Tetratrichomonas sp. Considering T. tenax is recognized as a zoonotic agent, transmission between dogs and humans cannot be neglected.  相似文献

A survey was carried out in 1988 to determine the occurrence and distribution of the flyPhytomyza orobanchia Kaltenbach [Diptera: Agromyzidae] on broomrape (Orobanche crenata Forskal) at 21 locations in northwestern Syria. Fruit capsules of broomrape were examined in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) fields. The fly was present at 95% of the locations sampled. Of 630 broomrape plants examined over all locations, 55.5% were infested. Of the 1,890 capsules examined, 32.5% were attacked. Fly populations were highest near the coast where 79% of the broomrapes were damaged. The total seed output of broomrape plants was reduced by 29.4% in the surveyed area due to a mean seed destruction of 91.1% per infested broomrape capsule.   相似文献

 The ectomycorrhizas of Shorea leprosula Miq. are described and their putative fungal associates discussed. Of the 24 ectomycorrhizal types reported from seedlings, wildlings and 20-year-old trees of Shorea leprosula, 20 were associated with the Basidiomycotina, two with the Ascomycotina and two with either members of the Ascomycotina or the Russulaceae. The dominant group of fungi associated with Shorea leprosula ectomycorrhizas were members of the Russulaceae. This was confirmed by collections of fungal fruiting bodies made under adult Shorea leprosula trees in various parts of Peninsular Malaysia over a period of 3 years. The embryo rescue technique was successfully used to raise hybrids between Trifolium alexandrinum and T. constantinopolitanum. As a result of its narrow genetic base, genetic improvement in Egyptian clover (syn. Berseem; T. alexandrinum), an important fodder crop in tropical and subtropical countries, is hampered, thereby making it imperative to introduce alien genes from related species. In a conventional interspecific hybridization program, hybrids could not be raised due to post-fertilization barriers. Of the several combinations tried, pollination 2 days after emasculation was found to be the best. Globular embryos were observed 5–7 days after pollination (DAP), followed by heart-shaped embryos 10–12 DAP. Embryos excised at the heart-shaped stage responded well to EC3 culture medium. Of 612 crosses, 33 healthy embryos could be excised and cultured on EC3 medium. The plumule emerged 8–12 days following inoculation. The embryo-rescued plants were hardened, inoculated with Rhizobium and transferred to the field. The hybrids showed intermediate morphological features with reduced pollen fertility (55–65%) and a chromosomal complement of 2n=16. Presented study focused on the influence of Cochliobolus sativus isolates origin on pathogenicity towards wheat and barley seedlings in comparison with pathogenicity of certain Fusarium species and Microdochium nivale. The efficacy of fungicide seed treatment against C. sativus was estimated. The C. sativus isolates were collected from different locations and were isolated from wheat, barley and sunflower seeds. The pathogenicity of C. sativus, Fusarium species and M. nivale towards germinating seedlings were expressed as germination (GA) retardation and coleoptile growth rate retardation (CGR). Of wheat only, the CGR was significantly influenced by the isolate origin. The C. sativus isolates obtained from sunflower seeds were the most aggressive. Of the barley seeds, the barley isolates were the most aggressive. Barley was significantly more susceptible to damage by C. sativus isolates than wheat. The pathogenicity of tested fungal species declined in the order: F. culmorum, F. graminearum, C. sativus, F. avenaceum, M. nivale, F. poae for both barley and wheat. The results highlighted high pathogenicity potential of C. sativus equal to that of F. avenaceum and M. nivale. The symptoms of C. sativus on coleoptile and roots were very similar or the same as the symptoms caused by Fusarium species and M. nivale, except of white, pink or red colours. Of wheat sprouts, the fungicide efficacy (FE) against C. sativus declined in the order: tebuconazole + thiram, carboxin + thiram, quazatine, difenoconazole, iprodione + triticonazole (in term of GA) and carboxin + thiram, iprodione + triticonazole, tebuconazole + thiram, difenoconazole, quazatine (in term of CGR). In barley, the FE declined in the order: carboxin + thiram, iprodione + triticonazole, tebuconazole + thiram, difenoconazole, quazatine (in term of GA) and carboxin + thiram, tebuconazole + thiram, difenoconazole, iprodione + triticonazole, quazatine (in term of CGR).  相似文献

A total of 1527 specimens of poor cod, Trisopterus minutus, was collected by trawl fishing between April 2001 and March 2002 from the ?zmir Bay (Middle Aegean Sea). Fish size ranged from 10.6 cm total length (TL, minimum) in September to 24.8 cm TL in April. Of the sampled population 53% were males and 41% females (sex ratio female : male = 1 : 1.3). Length–weight relationships were determined for males, females and combined sexes as W = 0.007L3.16, W = 0.009L3.04 and W = 0.007L3.14 respectively.  相似文献

 Five species collected in the Nansei Islands are discussed. Of these, one species found on Gardenia jasminoides is described as a new species, Cercosporidium okinawaense Kobayashi et Nishijima. Asperisporium caricae on Carica papaya, Pseudocercospora melastomobia on Melastoma candidum, and P. neoliquidambaris Nakashima et Kobayashi, nom. nov. on Liquidambar formosana are newly added to the Japanese mycoflora. Cercospora violamaculans on Rhaphiolepis umbellata is transferred to the genus Pseudocercospora as Pseudocercospora violamaculans (Fukui) Kobayashi et Nakashima, comb. nov., with some additional notes. The expansion of smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu throughout North America has created substantial changes in some food webs and created novel interactions with native predators in many systems through competition and predation, causing declines in native predator populations. In this study, we examined potential interactions between smallmouth bass (introduced) and walleye Sander vitreus (a native predator) in two Missouri River reservoirs and four natural lakes in South Dakota, USA, using historical standardized sampling data, which indexed four fitness‐related factors (relative abundance, size structure, condition, and growth) of both species. Of the 24 total relationships tested among all water bodies, three (13%) were determined to be significant (size structure in Pickerel Lake: P = 0.06; condition in Lake Kampeska: P = 0.06, and growth at Brant Lake: P = 0.02). Of these three, two relationships were negative as would be expected if negative interactions exist between these two species (size structure in Pickerel Lake: r = ?0.61; condition in Lake Kampeska: r = ?0.61); the remaining relationship was positive (growth at Brant Lake: r = 0.75). Further, no water body consistently demonstrated significant negative interactions in all relationships tested. The results of our study did not support the concept that introduced smallmouth bass interfere with walleye populations in South Dakota waters. Rather, it is more likely that other environmental factors influence the observed variability in walleye demographics and dynamics observed in this study. At this time, we believe that both fisheries will continue to co‐exist. However, continuous monitoring of both species is warranted as changing environmental conditions in the future could allow these interspecific relationships to shift toward the dominance of smallmouth bass over walleye.  相似文献

 Five species of the genus Lophiotrema are reported in this article. Of these, Lophiotrema vitigenum is described and illustrated as a new species. Three species, L. nucula, L. neohysterioides, and L. vagabundum, are newly added to the Japanease mycoflora. Lophiosphaera orientalis, Nodulosphaeria araucariae, and N. rosae, which had been recorded in Japan, are treated as synonyms of Lophiotrema fuckelii. The aim of the study was to characterize genomic relationships among cultivated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) (2n=2x=24) and diploid (2n=2x=24) non-tuberous wild Solanum species (S. etuberosum Lindl.). Using genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) of mitotic and meiotic chromosomes, we analyzed intergeneric somatic hybrids between tomato and S. etuberosum. Of the five somatic hybrids, two plants were amphidiploids (2n=4x=48) mostly forming intragenomic bivalents in their microsporocytes, with a very low frequency of multivalents involving the chromosomes of tomato and S. etuberosum (less than 0.2 per meiocyte). Tomato chromosomes showed preferential elimination during subsequent meiotic divisions of the amphidiploids. Transmission of the parental chromosomes into microspores was also evaluated by GISH analysis of androgenic plants produced by direct embryogenesis from the amphidiploid somatic hybrids. Of the four androgenic regenerants, three were diploids (2n=2x=24 or 2n=2x+1=25) derived from reduced male gametes of the somatic hybrids, and one plant was a hypertetraploid (2n=4x+4=52). GISH revealed that each anther-derived plant had a unique chromosome composition. The prospects for introgression of desirable traits from S. etuberosum into the gene pool of cultivated tomato are discussed. Received: 2 August 2000 / Accepted: 4 December 2000  相似文献
