The monogenean Neobenedenia melleni (MacCallum, 1927) Yamaguti 1963 is a well-known and virulent pathogen in culture conditions recorded from the skin of many teleost fish species worldwide. Until now, N. melleni has not been reported from wild or cultured fish in Australian waters. This study documents a recent outbreak of N. melleni that occurred on Lates calcarifer (barramundi) cultivated in sea cages in Hinchinbrook Channel between Hinchinbrook Island and mainland Queensland, Australia, which resulted in the loss of 200,000 fish (50 tonnes). The origin of this outbreak is unclear because N. melleni has not been recorded from any wild host species in Australia and strict quarantine regulations exclude the possibility of its introduction on imported fish. We propose that N. melleni occurs naturally on wild populations of some teleost species in Australian waters and that the few surveys of wild fish conducted along the east coast have failed to report this species. The possibility that uncharacteristically low water temperatures led to the outbreak is discussed.  相似文献

Neobenedenia pargueraensis n. sp. from Epinephelus guttatus of Puerto Rico differs from all known species in possessing scoop-shaped accessory sclerites with pointed tips. It is most similar to Neobenedenia melleni and Neobenedenia longiprostata but differs from the former in having a fenestrate ovary and from the latter in that the ducts of the accessory glands are short, terminating just anterior to the vitelline reservoir rather than reaching the caudal end of the body. It differs from both species in having smooth rather than lobate testes. Neobenedenia melleni occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical western North Atlantic including Bermuda. It kills aquarium and aquaculture fishes with massive infestations and is a severe restraint on the culture of tilapia in sea water in the Caribbean.  相似文献

We investigated how two sympatric species of freshwater mussels transmit their parasitic larvae to fish hosts. We found that Villosa nebulosa and V. vibex both display large mantle lures to attract potential host fish, but V. nebulosa displayed only at night and V. vibex displayed mostly by day. Display periods were similar in the laboratory and in the field. In two laboratory experiments, we found that the frequency of lure display in both mussel species was unrelated to the presence of fish or to the species of fish present. However, both species released more larvae in the presence of a suitable host fish (Micropterus spp.) and a nonhost species (Cyprinella camura) than in the absence of fish. In all treatments, females released low numbers of larvae on a daily basis throughout the experiment. We also observed several, irregularly occurring major release events in which numbers of larvae released were from one to three orders of magnitude larger than minor, daily releases. In V. nebulosa, major releases occurred with suitable and nonsuitable host species; in V. vibex major releases occurred mostly with suitable host species. In an additional laboratory experiment, we found that V. vibex released large numbers of larvae only when the host fish was able to make physical contact with the mussel. Few larvae were released when no fish were present or when host fish were present but physical access to the mussel was restricted. These results show that, in mussel species that display lures, physical interaction with a fish is necessary to stimulate large releases of larvae and suggest that interactions with a suitable host species stimulate larger and more frequent releases than with nonhosts. We quantified Neobenedenia melleni from the skin of Caribbean surgeonfishes (Acanthuridae) from June through October 2005 and 2007. Prevalence, or mean intensity of infection, or both, varied significantly among the 3 species, and among sites and between years for the most heavily infected species, blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus). Among 6 sites sampled, no more than 12% of ocean surgeonfish (Acanthurus bahianus) were infected, compared with 10 to 100% of A. coeruleus. The prevalence of infection among doctorfish (Acanthurus chirurgus), collected at only 1 of the sites, was intermediate between the other 2 species (46%). Mean intensity (range) of infection for the few infected A. bahianus was 1 (1) to 3 (1-8), compared with 1.3 (1-2) to 14.3 (1-59) for A. coeruleus, and 2.5 (1-8) for A. chirurgus. Expected abundance of N. melleni on A. coeruleus from shallow bay sites was greater than for those from non-bay sites. Higher infections on A. coeruleus may be attributable to differences in habitat use, or susceptibility to infection, or both, compared to other species. Among site and between-year differences may be associated with differences in benthic habitat, or water conditions, or both. This system seems ideal for future comparative studies on the relationship between environmental variables and parasites on Caribbean coral reefs.  相似文献

Examination of 290 red rockfish Sebastes capensis from two fishing grounds in northern Chile (Coquimbo 71°30' W; 30°0' S and Antofagasta 70°40' W; 23°30' S) revealed 8770 metazoan parasites, belonging to 18 taxa: Udonella caligorum (Udonellidae); Interniloculus chilensis , Paramicrocotyle sp. and Neobenedenia melleni (Monogenea); larval Gnathia sp., Cirolana sp. and Rocinela sp. (Isopoda); Helicometrina nimia , Diphtherostomum sp., Lecithochirium sp. and Pseudopecoelus sp. (Digenea); Ascarophis sebastodis , Anisakis sp. and larval Hysterothylacium sp. (Nematoda); Caligus cheilodactylus , Lepeophtheirus chilensis and Trifur tortuosus (Copepoda); larval Corynosoma australe (Acanthocephala). Ten species were found only in Coquimbo and three were found only in Antofagasta, species common to both localities were Pseudopecoelus sp., C. australe , Anisakis sp. and A. sebastodis . Evidence, based on qualitative differences between the parasite faunas of the red rockfish, suggests the existence of two discrete stocks.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Keys are provided to identify those British limnephilid larvae which are characterized by having gill sites occupied solely by single filaments at the final instar. Most species can be identified at the final instar but many species can also be identified at the earlier instars. A key is also supplied to distinguish the early instar larvae as a group from other limnephilid larvae. Brief notes on distribution and habitat are given. The species identified at least at the final instar are:- Apatania wallengreni, A. auricula, A. muliebris, Drusus annulatus, Ecclisopteryx guttulata, Potamophylax latipennis, P. cingulatus, P. rotundipennis, Melampophylax mucoreus, Allogamus auricollis, Hydatophylax infumatus, Chaetopteryx villosa . It was not possible to segregate Halesus radiatus from H. digitatus, Stenophylax permistus from S. vibex , or S. lateralis from S. sequax .  相似文献

A new species of Theletrum is described from the intestine of two palenose morays, Echidna nocturna, collected in Cuajiniquil, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. The new species differs from the type species, T. fustiforme Linton, 1910 by having a subspherical pars prostatica, a subspherical seminal vesicle extending anteriorly to the anterior border of the acetabulum, by the presence of a poorly developed hermaphroditic sac, and by having a larger body size. We also report eight additional species of digeneans parasitizing marine fishes in several localities along the Atlantic and Pacific coast of Costa Rica: Bianium simonei, Didymozoinae (metacercariae), Ectenurus virgulus, Hypocreadium myohelicatum, Lecithochirium microstomum, Pseudolecithaster sp., Stephanostomum casum, and Tergestia laticollis. In addition, we present an updated list of helminth parasites of marine fish from Costa Rica and discuss the importance of including parasites as an integral part of biodiversity inventories.  相似文献

Heterobothrium okamotoi, a monogenean gill parasite, shows high host specificity for tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes. In the present study, in vivo and in vitro experimental infections were conducted using various fish species, including T. rubripes, to understand the mechanisms of specificity. In in vivo experiments, T. rubripes, grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles, olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, and red sea bream, Pagrus major, were exposed to oncomiracidia of H. okamotoi labelled with a fluorescent dye, 5- (and -6) carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester, and the numbers of parasites on the gills and skin were recorded at intervals. Oncomiracidia were attached to gills and skin of all the experimental fish species immediately after exposure, and the infection intensity on T. rubripes was higher than that on T. niphobles and much higher than those on the other two species. After 2 days, the attached parasites remained on the gills of T. rubripes, but disappeared from the other hosts. During in vitro experiments, gill filaments excised from seven different fish species (four fish species used in the in vivo experiments and panther puffer, Takifugu pardalis, southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma and spotted halibut, Verasper variegates) were exposed to oncomiracidia and the attachment to each fish species and subsequent larval behaviour was observed. The percentage of post-larvae that attached to T. rubripes was slightly higher than those which attached to congeneric fish species and much higher than those of non-tetraodontid fish species. In vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrated that oncomiracidia of H. okamotoi have an affinity for their natural host, T. rubripes, and congeneric fish species. The disappearance of attached post-larvae from 'alien' hosts within 2 days during in vivo experiments suggested that host recognition by oncomiracidia and subsequent post-larval survivability are involved in the host specificity of H. okamotoi.  相似文献

Antarctic fish have a high polyunsaturated lipid content and their muscle cells have a high mitochondria density suggesting that Antarctic fish are under greater oxidative stress than temperate water fish. To test this hypothesis, the plasma concentrations of the antioxidant vitamins E and C were measured in two Antarctic fish species, Pagothenia borchgrevinki and Trematomus bernacchii, and compared with the plasma concentrations of these vitamins in two New Zealand temperate water fish species, blue cod (Parapercis colias) and banded wrasse (Notolabrus fucicola). Neither vitamin is known to be synthesised in fish and so must be obtained from the diet. The plasma from both Antarctic fish species had vitamin E concentrations five to six times higher than those found in the two temperate water fish species. However, significantly higher levels of vitamin C were only found in the plasma of T. bernacchii, a benthic Antarctic fish. The average level of vitamin C in the plasma of the cryopelagic P. borchgrevinki was approximately one-third that of T. bernacchii. The T. bernacchii plasma yielded a high range of vitamin C values, possibly reflecting differences in nutritional status among the animals captured. No beta-carotene was found in any of the fish plasma samples studied. The data suggest that even though Antarctic fish live at -1.5 degrees C they may be exposed to greater metabolic stress from free radical mediated oxidation than temperate water species.  相似文献

Assessment of candidates for investigation of bone lipid metabolism yielded the following findings. (1) A tropical marine butterflyfish, Chaetodon ornatissimus, had oil-filled bones (66-80% lipid, percent dry weight) hence may be a suitable condidate. (2) The tropical marine fishes Exallias brevis, Pomacentrus jenkensi, and Chromus agilis, and a Canadian fish Sebastes ruberrimus, had intermediate quantities of oil in their bones (12-49% lipid). (3) In all the foregoing species the major bone lipid was triglyceride, usually more abundant in skull than spine. Sterol and phospholipid were also present. (4) The major fatty acids of the triglycerides (and phospholipids) were 16:0, 18:0, 18:1, and C20, C22 acids. Those acids were dominated by 20:4, 20:5, 22:5, and 22:6. (5) There was more total unsaturation in the bone lipids of S. ruberrimus (from 10 degrees C water; 67-72% unsaturation) compared to the tropical fish (from 25 degrees C water; 32-67% unsaturation) with the exception of E. brevis. (6) One of the tropical species (Arothron meleagris) and a Canadian Chimaeran (Hydrolagus colliei) contained only 1-3% lipid in their bones.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of environmental salinity on the upper thermal tolerance of green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris), a threatened species whose natural habitat is vulnerable to temperature and salinity variation as a result of global climate change. Freshwater (FW)-reared sturgeon were gradually acclimated to salinities representing FW, estuary water (EST), or San Francisco Bay water (BAY) at 18 degrees C, and their critical thermal maximum (CTMax) was measured by increasing temperature 0.3 degrees C/min until branchial ventilation ceased. CTMax was 34.2+/-0.09 degrees C in EST-acclimated fish, with FW- and BAY-acclimated fish CTMax at 33.7+/-0.08 and 33.7+/-0.1 degrees C, respectively. Despite the higher CTMax in EST-acclimated fish, FW-acclimated sturgeon ventilation rate reached a peak that was 2 degrees C higher than EST- and BAY-acclimated groups and had a greater range of temperatures within which they exhibited normal ventilatory function as assessed by Q(10) calculation. The osmoregulatory consequences of exposure to near-lethal temperatures were assessed by measuring plasma osmolality and hematocrit, as well as white muscle, brain, and heart tissue water contents. Hematocrit was increased following CTMax exposure, most likely owing to the elevated metabolic demands of temperature increase, and plasma osmolality was significantly increased in EST- and BAY-acclimated fish, which was likely the result of a greater osmotic gradient across the gill as metabolism increased. To our knowledge, this represents the first evidence for an effect of salinity on the upper thermal tolerance of sturgeon, as well as the first investigation of the osmoregulatory consequences of exposure to near-lethal temperatures. 1. Preventing the introduction of species likely to become invaders is the best management option to deal with biological invasions. A data set consisting of native, introduced and species not currently present in Iberian Peninsula (n = 167 species) was used to identify freshwater fish species that are likely to be introduced and become successful invaders in the near future. 2. Principal component analysis (PCA) of species traits was used to determine species likely to be introduced, assuming that the traits of species introduced in the future will resemble those of previously introduced species. The likelihood of introduction was calculated as the proportion of neighbour species (in the space defined by the PCA) that have been introduced to the Iberian Peninsula and, together with metrics related to different stages of invasion, was used to construct a region‐specific risk index (Iberian risk index). 3. Introduced species had higher index values compared with native species or species currently absent from the region. The Iberian risk index was positively related to the results of an independent risk analysis for freshwater fish as well as to the geographical spread of species previously introduced to the Iberian Peninsula. 4. Iberian risk index values were used to establish a cut‐off value for estimating the probability of a successful invasion. This threshold value was used to construct a list of 20 species to be included in a ‘watch list’ to prevent freshwater fish invasions in the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

The arboreal boid Corallus annulatus has a disjunct distribution in tropical wet forests from extreme southeastern Guatemala to southwestern Ecuador (west of the Andes). The characters upon which subspecies (C. a. blombergi and C. a. colombianus) were described are shown to be of no diagnostic value. Based on a suite of characters (scale, pattern, osteological), Corallus a. blombergi is elevated to species status and Corallus a. colombianus is placed in the synonymy of C. annulatus. Corallus annulatus and C. blombergi are considered to be species that are genuinely uncommon, although not necessarily rare.

The helminth fauna of the barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara) in Tenerife Island (Canary Archipelago) was studied from 2001 to 2002, as there were no records of helminths from this host in the Canary Islands. Seven helminth species were identified: two cestodes Choanotaenia infundibulum and Lyruterina nigropunctata, and five nematodes Aonchotheca caudinflata, Baruscapillaria obsignata, Eucoleus annulatus, Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum. Lyruterina nigropunctata, A. galli and E. annulatus are recorded for first time in A. barbara. An analysis of available data on Alectoris spp. reveals the importance of intermediate hosts such as arthropods and earthworms in the diet of partridges. Terrestrial helminths are dominant species, with monoxenous and heteroxenous species being present in similar numbers in different Alectoris species along their geographical distribution. Helminth species found in Tenerife from A. barbara are poor indicators of the host colonization from North Africa because these helminths are species that are commonly found in fowl with a cosmopolitan distribution.  相似文献

A survey was carried out to investigate the prevalence of hard tick species (Acari: Ixodidae) on cattle in Mazandaran province, Iran. A total of 953 ticks were collected from 86 infested cattle during activating seasons of ticks during 2004-2005. Nine species were identified: Boophilus annulatus (51.3%), Rhipicephalus bursa (16.8%), Haemaphysalis punctata (6.3%), Ixodes ricinus (6.8%), Hyalomma marginatum (12.5%), Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum (5.2%), Hyalomma asiaticum (0.6%), Hyalomma detritum (0.2 %), and Dermacentor spp. (0.1%). The results show that Boophilus annulatus, Rhipicephalus bursa, and Hyalomma species are dominant tick species in the surveyed area.  相似文献

We experimentally measured thermal changes in the gastric evacuation rate (GER) of the freshwater sculpin Cottus nozawae Snyder under three water temperature regimes (2°, 7°, and 12°C). Laboratory experiments showed that the GER was accelerated with increasing water temperature. This result suggests that the daily food rations of fish are more likely to be underestimated at higher water temperatures if estimation is simply based on the stomach content weight alone. By comparing the GER for various fish species from subfrigid to temperate streams, we found a general pattern that the GER increases with water temperature, regardless of taxonomic group or foraging mode. However, the reaction norms of the GER against water temperature showed considerable interspecific variation. This means that stomach content weight is not comparable as a simple measure for determining the daily rations among fish species when water temperature regimes are different. To consider the temperature-dependent pattern of such a physiological phenomenon is important in understanding the feeding ecology of fishes and their roles in material cycles through food webs in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Intra-species morphological variation presents a considerable problem for species identification and can result in taxonomic confusion. This is particularly pertinent for species of Neobenedenia which are harmful agents in captive fish populations and have historically been identified almost entirely based on morphological characters. This study aimed to understand how the morphology of Neobenedenia girellae varies with host fish species and the environment. Standard morphological features of genetically indistinct parasites from various host fish species were measured under controlled temperatures and salinities. An initial field-based investigation found that parasite morphology significantly differed between genetically indistinct parasites infecting various host fish species. The majority of the morphological variation observed (60%) was attributed to features that assist in parasite attachment to the host (i.e. the posterior and anterior attachment organs and their accessory hooks) which are important characters in monogenean taxonomy. We then experimentally examined the effects of the interaction between host fish species and environmental factors (temperature and salinity) on the morphology of isogenic parasites derived from a single, isolated hermaphroditic N. girellae infecting barramundi, Lates calcarifer. Experimental infection of L. calcarifer and cobia, Rachycentron canadum, under controlled laboratory conditions did not confer host-mediated phenotypic plasticity in N. girellae, suggesting that measured morphological differences could be adaptive and only occur over multiple parasite generations. Subsequent experimental infection of a single host species, L. calcarifer, at various temperatures (22, 30 and 32?°C) and salinities (35 and 40‰) showed that in the cooler environments (22?°C) N. girellae body proportions were significantly smaller compared with warmer temperatures (30 and 32?°C; P?<?0.0001), whereas salinity had no effect. This is evidence that temperature can drive phenotypic plasticity in key taxonomic characters of N. girellae under certain environmental conditions.  相似文献
