Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of mosquito fish to various salt concentrations. Mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis , (total length (T.L.) 27–37 mm) were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water to various salinities (S). Low mortality (10%) occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water (S = 0·5‰) to 50% sea water (S = 19·5‰ Through gradual adaptation 65·0% of the fish were able to tolerate 100% sea water for 7 days. After a 7 -day stay in sea water, fish were readapted to fresh water during a 3-h period. The results indicate that they were well able to tolerate the abrupt change. Through a gradual adaptation fish were also able to tolerate salinities ranging from 39·0‰ (100% sea water) to 58·8‰  相似文献

Three ringed seal ( Phoca hispida ) pups were used to calculate water flux and milk intake, based on mass increase and dilution of injected tritiated water. Biological half life of tritium in ringed seal pups was 130 ± 17 h (mean ± S.D.). The plateau level of the isotope indicating equilibrium with the body water was, in all cases (N = 8), reached before the first blood sample was collected after 0·5 h. Daily water flux in the pups was 62·9 ± 21·5 ml kg-1. Estimated daily milk intake of 1103 ± 388 ml milk resulted in a mass increase of 386 ± 104 g. Neonates had a fat content of 4·75%, and a water content of 70·1% (N = 3). Corresponding figures for a pup close to weaning were 36·5% and 46·3%. Isotope dilution calculations of body water gave an overestimate of 1·6% compared with body water content from desiccation. Ringed seal milk was found to contain 38·1% fat, 9·9% protein, 2·3% lactose and 1% ash.  相似文献

The survival of Atlantic salmon smolts on exposure to constant concentrations of cyanide and ammonia, singly and together, has been measured under laboratory conditions at a concentration of 5 mgl-1 of carbon dioxide. The 24-h LC50 values of cyanide and of un-ionised ammonia, in fresh water, were 0·073 mg HCN l-1 and 0·20 mg NH3l-1 respectively at a concentration of dissolved oxygen of 10 mg l-1, and 0·024 mg HCN l-1 and 0·08 mgNH3l-1 respectively at a concentration of dissolved oxygen of 3·5 mg l-1. In 30% sea water the corresponding values were similar for cyanide but markedly higher for ammonioa. In 80% sea water the values were intermediate between those of fresh water and 30% sea water. Prior acclimation of the fish to the respective toxicant increased the resistance of the fish only slightly to cyanide, but with ammonia the 24-h LC50 was increased between 1·4 and 2-fold after acclimation for 1–3 days to between 0·2 and 0·5 of the 24-h LC50 value. Mixtures of cyanide and ammonia were between 0·6 and 1·25 times as toxic as expected, assuming simple additivity of toxicity.  相似文献

The osmoregulatory capacity of two oligochaete species, Enchytraeus albidus Henle, 1837, and Heterochaeta costata (Claparède, 1863), was investigated by direct measurements of the osmolality of the coelomic fluid. Terrestrial and marine (28 S) populations of Enchytraeus albidus and a brackish water population (14 S) of H. costata were used in the study. The range of salinity acclimation investigated was 0–40. The response to osmotic stress was measured (a) after a long-term maintenance (>14 days) in various salinities (E. albidus only), and (b) after a hyperosmotic shock as a short-term time-course sequence. The rate of water loss following a hyperosmotic shock was measured for E. albidus. Long-term acclimation. E. albidus maintained a hyperosmotic coelomic fluid over all salinities tested. In low salinities the osmolality of the coelomic fluid of the marine population was significantly higher than that of the terrestrial population. Possible genetic discrepancies or long-term acclimation may account for this difference. The coelomic fluid of H. costata was hyperosmotic at 15%. S and isoosmotic at 30 S. Short-term acclimation (hyperosmotic shock). Both species investigated, kept at 15 S and then exposed to a salinity of 30, showed fast responses: within the first two hours the internal concentrations were adjusted to the new external condition with only small subsequent changes. Regulation of the body-water content after an exposure to a hyperosmotic shock was much slower: individuals of terrestrial E. albidus, acclimated for two weeks to either 0 or 15 S, had the same water content; hence, they showed a 100% regulation. However, after exposure to 30 S, a 100% regulation was still not attained 4 days after the hyperosmotic shock. Enchytraeus albidus is capable of actively reducing water loss following the hyperosmotic shock: the observed loss of water was only 40% of that expected for a passive osmotic flow. The observed reactions are compared with those in other annelids. It seems that an active transport of ions combined with a changeable permeability of the body wall play a major role in the regulation of body fluids.  相似文献

Pinfish Lagodon rhomboides acclimation rates were determined by modelling changes in critical thermal minimum ( T crit min, ° C) estimates at set intervals following a temperature decrease of 3–4° C. The results showed that pinfish gained a total of 3·7° C of cold tolerance over a range of acclimation temperatures ( T acc, ° C) from (23–12° C), that cold tolerance increased with exposure time to the reduced temperature at all T acc, but that the rate of cold tolerance accruement (mean 0·14° C day−1) was independent of T acc. A highly significant ( P < 0·001) multivariate predictive model was generated that described the acclimation rates and thermal tolerance of pinfish exposed to reduction in water temperature: log10 T crit min= 0·41597 − 0·01704 T acc+ 0·04320 T plunge− 0·08376[log10 ( t + 1)], where T plunge is plunge temperature (° C) and t is the time (days). A comparison of the present data, with acclimation rate data for other species, suggests that factors such as latitude or geographic range may play a more important role than ambient temperature in determining cold acclimation rates in fishes.  相似文献

Age-0 Pacific herring were surveyed in October of 4 years in a large northern Gulf of Alaska estuary, to determine the range of variations in length, weight and whole body energy content (WBEC). These parameters reflect their preparedness for surviving their first winter's fast. During the surveys there were distinct regional and interannual variations in all three parameters for individual groups of herring in Prince William Sound. Likewise, with each collection there was typically a large range of size and WBEC values. The average standard length was (±S.D.) 80±13 mm (range=40–118), the mean whole body wet weight was 5·7±3·0 g (range=0·7–29·2) and the average WBEC of all age-0 herring captured, regardless of year or site (n=1471), was 5·4± 1·0 kJ g−1 wet weight (range=2·4–9·4). The large range of WBEC and size indicates that age-0 herring at different capture sites were not all equally prepared for surviving their first winter.  相似文献

The water balance of 0-group flounders was investigated in a range of static [0–100% sea water (SW), 100%≡ 34%‰] and cycling salinities (2–98% SW, 12 h 25 min period). The permeability coefficients of these juvenile fish were found to be higher than those quoted for adults. The permeability of juveniles in fixed salinities decreased with increased salinity whereas animals in the tidally cycling regime showed permeability changes that were directly proportional to the ambient salinity. However, comparison of the two groups showed that animals in a cycling salinity regime were less permeable to water than animals acclimated to fixed salinities. Drinking and urine production rates fluctuated within a tidal salinity regime, and 0-group flounders were found to modify their water permeability, urine production and drinking rates simultaneously, so maintaining their blood osmotic concentration and total water content within narrow limits throughout the range of salinities.
The relevance of measurements made in fixed and tidally cycling salinities to water regulation under natural estuarine conditions is considered.  相似文献

Reproductive investment in the Silurus meridionalis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A comparison of pre- and postspawning Silurus meridionalis showed that 20·7% of body stored energy was utilized during spawning for a standard male (74·5 cm) and 23·8% for a standard female (85·3 cm). About one-third of the loss of the stored energy was released as eggs by females, and almost all of the energy loss for males and about two-thirds for females were expended in metabolism. Stored lipid as fuel for metabolism supplied 90·0% of energy in males and 95·2% in females, and protein supplied the rest of the energy. Models for predicting energy in released gametes ( G g), deposited in the body as somatic growth ( G s), utilized in spawning activity ( S a), expended in maintenance ( M , including metabolism, faeces and excretion), and food energy ( C ) were developed, and annual energy budgets were compiled. The balanced budget for a male aged 4 was: 100 C =0·06 G g+11·17 S a+19·5 G s+69·2 M , and for a female aged 5: 100 C =5·48 G g+8·51 S a+15·8 G s+70·2 M .  相似文献

The growth of 1-year-old Arctic cisco ( Coregonus autumnalis ) was monitored under laboratory conditions for fish acclimated to one of two temperatures (5 and 10° C) and one of five salinities (6, 12, 18,24, 30‰). Fish were maintained for 43 days at rations of 3% wet body weight per day at 5° C and 5% wet body weight per day at 10° C, with rations adjusted for weight gain every 7–12 days. Fish increased 9–11% in length and 55–71% in weight at 5° C, and 23–27% in length and 141–161% in weight at 10° C. Length and weight increased linearly over 43 days. There was a statistically significant effect of temperature on growth but no statistically significant effect of salinity. Higher growth rates at 10° C were partially attributable to significantly greater gross conversion efficiency at the higher temperature. Over the course of the experiment, the condition (weight per unit length) of all fish increased by 3·2 to 63·6% at 5° C and by 5·6 to 46·0% at 10° C. There was no discernible effect of salinity on condition at either temperature. These results demonstrate that, with salinity acclimation and high food ration, 1-year-old Arctic cisco can grow at equivalent rates across salinities ranging from 6 to 30‰. The ecological implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

The movement of individual post-larvae of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) among horizontally-juxtaposed salinity layers of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28%. was observed during 135-min test periods. The time that post-larvae spent in each salinity was measured at 20, 27, and 34 °C with prawns acclimated to 0, 14, and 28%. salinity.

The young prawns generally moved readily into salinities lower than the acclimation salinity at 27°C, and less frequently into higher salinities. At both 27 and 34°C, post-larvae tended to spend more time in lower salinities than in the salinities to which they were acclimated. Post-larvae acclimated to fresh water rarely reentered saline waters.

Temperature effects on activity resulted in little movement of the prawns at 20°C. High temperature shortened the range of salinities post-larvae occupied for significant periods of time.  相似文献

The compensatory growth of juvenile brown flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (body mass c. 12 g) following different thermal exposure was investigated. Fish were exposed to one of the five temperatures: 8·5 ( T 8·5), 13·0 ( T 13·0), 17·5 ( T 17·5), 22·0 ( T 22·0) and 26·5° C ( T 26·5) for 10 days and fish grew best at 22·0° C. Then the water temperature in all treatments was equably adjusted to 22·0° C over 3 days. At the end of the following 30 days after temperature adjustment, there were no significant differences between body masses of fish in the different treatments (wet body mass at the end of the experiment ranged from 22·13 to 24·56 g). Results indicated that the juvenile P. olivaceus achieved complete compensatory growth. Analysis of the dynamics of the feeding rates and feed conversion efficiencies indicated that compensatory growth of the fish experienced low temperature ( T 8·5, T 13·5 and T 17·5) or high temperature ( T 26·5) exposure was mainly dependent on increasing feed intake (hyperphagia) and possibly by improvement in feed conversion efficiency. The moisture content was not affected by different temperature exposure significantly. The lipid and energy content of juvenile P. olivaceus in T 8·5, however, were significantly lower than other treatment. Results of the current study indicate that a short period of low or high temperature exposure may not affect annual growth, but may affect lipid and energy deposition.  相似文献

The chief objective was to determine the critical thermal limits for alevins, fry and parr of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , (L.) from four races living in Windermere (northwest England). The experimental fish were reared in a hatchery but were the progeny of wild parents. As comparisons between tethal temperatures at four acclimation temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20° C) revealed few significant racial differences, the data were pooled to estimate the lethal values for survival over 7 days (incipient lethal temperature) and over only 10 min (ultimate lethal temperature) for each life stage. Upper lethal values increased with acclimation temperatures for alevins but this effect was negligible for fry and parr, Alevins were generally less tolerant than fry and parr at lower, but not higher, acclimation temperatures; e.g. after acclimation at 5° C, mean upper ultimate values were 23·3, 25·1 and 25·7° C and mean upper incipient values were 18·7, 21·5 and 21·5° C for alevins, fry and parr respectively; after acclimation at 20° C, mean upper ultimate and incipient values were 26·2, 26·1 and 26·6° C and 20·8, 20·8 and 21·6° C for alevins, fry and parr respectively. The area of the temperature tolerance polygon (expressed as ° C2) for juvenile Arctic charr is amongst the lowest recorded for salmonids; being 409, 439 and 461° C2 for alevins, fry and parr respectively. These low values are due to lower upper tolerance limits, not high lower tolerance limits; the latter being close to 0° C (<1°C for parr and fry, <0·3° C for alevins) at all acclimation temperatures. Arctic charr are therefore amongst the least resistant of salmonids to high temperatures but probably the most resistant to low temperatures.  相似文献

Cannibalism among starved groups of juvenile (19–48 days old) vundu catfish Heterobranchus longifilis was 66·5% nocturnal, and its impact under modified day length was proportional to the duration of the dark phase. Shallow depth and high population density decreased the intensity of cannibalism, whereas low density and deeper environments had an opposite effect. The presence of refuges had no significant effect on cannibalism. The maintenance ( R maint) and maximum ( R max) daily food rations (% day−1) of cannibals feeding on live prey were modelled as R maint=3·899 W C0·327 ( r 2=0·684; d.f.=31), and R max=49.545 W C0·321 ( r 2=0·999; d.f.=5), where W C was the body weight of the cannibal (g). The latter model indicated that the impact of a cannibal on a population decreased by a 20% margin each time the cannibal doubled its body weight, and suggested that cannibalism among vundu would become insignificant for cannibals heavier than 30 g. The significance of these findings is discussed within the contexts of vundu aquaculture and of general, conceptual models of the dynamics of cannibalism among fishes.  相似文献

Sperm motility of the fifteen‐spined stickleback Spinachia spinachia was investigated in different salinities, with or without the addition of ovarian fluid (25%). Sperm velocity, longevity, linearity and percentage of motile sperm were analysed with the aid of computer‐assisted sperm analysis (CASA). The sperm were found to have the longest duration of motility in sea water (60–90 min in salinities 20 and 30), shorter in brackish water (15–30 min in salinities 5·5 and 10) and were immotile in fresh water. The presence of ovarian fluid did not influence any sperm motility variable in any tested salinity.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of nitrogen fixation in termites   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Termite nitrogenase activity was highest in autumn and spring (≈ 3 μg N2 fixed termite fresh mass (g)–1 day–1) and lowest in winter and summer (≈ 0·8 μg N2 fixed termite fresh mass (g)–1 day–1).
2. The nitrogenase activity of worker termites was significantly higher than all other castes (1·58 ± 0·27 μg N2 fixed termite fresh mass (g)–1 day–1).
3. Worker termites constituted the largest proportion of all the castes throughout the study period (≈ 90%).
4. The localized input of fixed nitrogen by termites may reach 15·3 mg N log–1 day–1 and 5·6 g N log–1 year–1.  相似文献

Thermal tolerance of a northern population of striped bass Morone saxatilis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thermal tolerance of age 0+ year Shubenacadie River (Nova Scotia, Canada) striped bass Morone saxatilis juveniles (mean ± s . e . fork length, L F, 19·2 ± 0·2 cm) acclimated in fresh water to six temperatures from 5 to 30° C was measured by both the incipient lethal technique (72 h assay), and the critical thermal method ( C m). The lower incipient lethal temperature ranged from 2·4 to 11·3° C, and the upper incipient lethal temperature ( I U) from 24·4 to 33·9° C. The area of thermal tolerance was 618° C2. In a separate experiment, the I U of large age 2+ year fish (34·4 ± 0·5 cm L F) was 1·2 and 0·6° C lower ( P < 0·01) than smaller age 1+ year fish (21·8 ± 0·5 cm L F) at acclimation temperatures of 16 and 23° C. Using the C m, loss of equilibrium occurred at 27·4–37·7° C, loss of righting response at 28·1–38·4° C and onset of spasms at 28·5–38·8° C, depending on acclimation temperature. The linear regression slopes for these three responses were statistically similar (0·41; P > 0·05), but the intercepts differed (25·3, 26·0 and 26·5° C; P < 0·01). The thermal tolerance of this northern population appears to be broader than southern populations.  相似文献

The behaviour of the flounder Pleuronectes flesus was observed in an experimental aquarium that consisted of five connected units with decreasing salinity from 20 to 15, 10, 5 and 0·5. This experimental aquarium was highly effective for studying behaviour in salinity gradients, because the gradient was relatively stable. After 4 days of observation, significantly more flounder were found in water with a salinity of 0·5, indicating a preference for fresh water. The total length of the flounders ranged from 7·5 to 21 mm. The majority of larvae had already started eye‐migration, however, the longer specimens had completed metamorphosis. The migration towards low salinities was observed to increase with ontogenetic development.  相似文献

We investigated the efficiency of mass transfer in lactating harp seals through serial measurements on individual mother-pup pairs during the whelping seasons of 1988 and 1989. We also compared the influence of longitudinal versus cross-sectional sampling on estimates of the efficiency of mass transfer. Among longitudinally sampled pairs, pups grew at an average rate of 2·3 ± 0·5 (mean ± S.D.) kg/d (N = 20). The concomitant mass loss by females averaged 3·1 ± 0·8 kg/d (N = 19). The mean efficiency of mass transfer was 77·0 ± 13·6% (N= 19 pairs).
Estimates of pup growth and female mass loss from regressions of cross-sectional data were 2·0 kg/d and 3·1 kg/d, respectively. These values produce an estimate of 65% for the efficiency of mass transfer.
Consistent with the high efficiency of mass transfer, harp seal females contribute less of their total body mass to nursing ( c. 28%) than most other phocids examined. The resulting energy savings may be important for females of an ice-breeding species, which migrate a long distance shortly after weaning their pups  相似文献

In order to determine the potential for the invasive fishes sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus and topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva to disperse through saline waters their behaviour and physiology were investigated during exposure to salinities of 10·0 and 12·5. Increased salinity caused an increase in whole body cortisol in both species, but sunbleak and topmouth gudgeon showed very different metabolic and behavioural responses to the salinity stress. Sunbleak displayed increased swimming activity in brackish water, which may be important for dispersal through saline waters in the wild, although there were increased metabolic costs associated with this behaviour. Conversely, topmouth gudgeon showed a reduction in both swimming activity and metabolic rate in brackish waters. A pronounced depression in food intake (70–80%) was shown by both species during the salinity exposures. Both sunbleak and topmouth gudgeon, however, showed a full recovery of food intake within 24 h following return to fresh water. Despite the fact that exposure to saline waters is stressful, and affects both physiology and behaviour, rapid recovery of appetite after return to fresh water suggests that short-term use of brackish waters is a feasible dispersal route for sunbleak and topmouth gudgeon in the wild.  相似文献

Design of a Temperature Gradient Incubator   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
S ummary . A temperature gradient incubator heated and cooled by circulating liquids is described which is suitable for incubating micro-organisms in liquid media and on solid media in roll tubes. The maximum deviation from a linear temperature gradient is 0·35% of the range (0·13°) even when used at temperatures up to 30° above ambient. The temperature of any set of sample wells is uniform to within 0·07° (3·5% of the difference between adjacent rows).  相似文献
