SUMMARY.
  • 1 A study was made of the population dynamics of benthic cladocerans in the River Thames, U.K. These included three species of Chydoridae (Alona affinis Leydig, Disparalona rostrata (Koch 1841) and Leydigia leydigi Schodler) and one species of Macrothricidae Iliocryptus sordidus (Lievan).
  • 2 The pattern of chydorid abundance was similar to that found in many lakes: a midsummer peak followed by a sharp decrease in numbers and subsequent low abundance. This was caused by a temporary decrease in natality, possibly due to food limitation, and a more permanent increase in mortality, thought to be due to predation.
  • 3 Iliocryptus sordidus differed considerably from the chydorids, the major population peak occurring in the autumn. The lifestyle and adult size of Iliocryptus sordidus (Lievan) must render adults less vulnerable to invertebrate and fish fry predation.
  • 4 A literature survey showed that the assemblage of species found in the unvegetated littoral of lakes and rivers included a taxocene of cladocerans.

The seasonal variation of the principal macro- and meiobenthic taxa in the sandy littoral zone of the oligomesotrophic Dutch Lake Maarsseveen I was studied during two years. Population peaks of the different taxa were clearly separated in time. In early spring there were chironomid density peaks of Stictochironomus sticticus, in one year followed by a Polypedilum maximum. From June–July chydorid cladocerans dominated, with a peak of Monospilus dispar followed by a peak of Rhynchotalona falcata. In autumn the chironomid Cladotanytarsus mancus became dominant, remaining so throughout the winter. To study the spatial heterogeneity of the major macro- and meiofaunal taxa, samples were taken in a grid of 2.5 × 10 m. Distributions of all but one taxon were significantly different from random, with Morisita indices varying from 1.23 (chironomids) to 2.10 (the chydorid Monospilus dispar). Wind-induced disturbance presumably had strong and species-specific effects on littoral macro- and meiobenthic taxa. Chydorid heterogeneity increased immediately following the first autumn storm of the season; this may be explained by the tendency of these organisms to remain attached to detritus particles.Temporal and spatial correlation coefficients between macro- and meiobenthic taxa were generally low, suggesting that interactions between these groups are weak, with distribution patterns that are independent of each other. Among the meiofaunal taxa, positive spatial and temporal correlation coefficients were found; apparently, the similarity in both seasonal dynamics and spatial distribution is larger among the meiofaunal taxa than between macro- and meiofaunal taxa. Also among most of the chironomid species significant positive temporal correlations were found, except for Stictochironomus sticticus and Polypedilum sp.; these species have similar life-cycles, but were during one year temporally separated by several alternating settlement peaks. In the next year, Polypedilum disappeared completely following an extremely strong Stictochironomus settlement peak.  相似文献

Paleolimnological study of plant and animal microfossils is based on either relative abundances or net accumulation rates of various taxa. Interpretation of the latter is difficult because ecological factors that influence accumulation rates have been unknown. I use a novel method of 210Pb assay to estimate net accumulation rates of bosminids and chydorids at the sediment-water interface of 15 Florida (U.S.A.) lakes which represent a wide range of trophic state, water chemistry, and morphometry. Thirty-two species of Chydoridae, and two genera of Bosminidae were recovered from the lake sediments. Accumulation rates of 6 of the 11 more abundant chydorid species and both bosminid taxa were positively correlated with trophic state as measured by chlorophyll a concentration. Lake size was positively correlated with accumulation rates of 4 chydorid species and both bosminids. Weedbed area was positively correlated with accumulation rates of 2 chydorids, but neither bosminid. Lakewater pH was positively correlated with only one chydorid species accumulation rate. Multiple regression models explain statistically nearly all of the variance in each of the limnological variables, and can be used as transfer functions for paleolimnological inference.  相似文献

Distribution patterns of the larvae of Chironomidae are compared in three water systems in The Netherlands, which vary in trophic state and oxygen regimes. The life cycles and flying periods of some dominant chironomid species in two of the investigated lakes, Lakes Maarsseveen I and II, are determined by comparing data on the seasonal variations in larval densities with existing literature on Chironomidae in the Maarsseveen lakes. In the oligo-mesotrophic Lake Maarsseveen I (LM I), hypoxic or anoxic conditions in the hypolimnion are observed only at the end of the stratification period. A clear zonation of the chironomid fauna is present in this lake. The littoral zone is dominated byCladotanytarsus gr.mancus andStictochironomus sticticus, the littoriprofundal zone byTanytarsus bathophilus, and the profundal zone byChironomus anthracinus. In comparison with the other species in LM I,T. bathophilus larvae show the most variable distribution patterns over time. Larvae are found in all depths from July to September, but disappear from the hypolimnion as soon as oxygen conditions deteriorate. In the eutrophic Lake Maarsseveen II (LM II), oxygen depletion of the hypolimnion starts immediately after the onset of the thermal stratification in June, and continues until autumnal turnover in November. In this lake, the chironomid community consists primarily ofS. sticticus andCl. gr.mancus, and is confined to the narrow littoral zone. No chironomid larvae are found in the deeper parts of the lake. The eutrophic Lake Gijster in the Brabantse Biesbosch is a deep, man-made reservoir, that is artificially destratified during the summer. In this lakeTanytarsus bathophilus is found in the profundal sediments, whereas almost noChironomus is found in this zone. It is concluded that oxygen conditions existing in the deeper regions of the investigated lakes in large part determine the occurrence and distribution of chironomid species. The distribution ofT. bathophilus is limited by unfavorable oxygen conditions and not by the trophic state of the lake. These findings are part of a thesis (HEINIS, 1993).  相似文献

Benthic communities of the exposed sandy littoral zone in eighteen Dutch lakes were sampled using a small, hand-held core (surface area 0.8 cm2). A community dominated by chironomid larvae, chydorid cladocerans, nematodes and copepods was found to be characteristic for this habitat, especially in large and/or deep lakes. Bray-Curtis similarities between sites were generally high (>70%). A hierarchical cluster analysis distinguished two clusters at a 75% similarity level only, varying in copepod and chydorid densities. The chironomidsCladotanytarsus andStictochironomus reached high densities in many lakes, whileRhynchotalona falcata, Monospilus dispar, Disparalona rostrata, Alona spp. andChydorus spp. (mainlyChydorus piger) were the most abundant chydorid taxa.  相似文献

In order to test the hypothesis that predation controls summer population growth of the Chydoridae in Lake Itasca, Minnesota two types of in situ predator-exclusion experiments were conducted. The first series of experiments excluded all predators from chydorid populations by enclosing the chydorids within clear plexiglass chambers suspended in their natural habitat. The second series of experiments excluded fish, but not invertebrates, from chydorids by placing polyethylene exclosures directly on the submerged vegetation. The concomitant abundance of natural chydorid populations was monitored by pattern sampling adjacent vegetation. Populations of Chydoridae that were protected from all predation increased exponentially, while natural populations remaining exposed to predation decreased dramatically. Populations protected from predation by fish but not invertebrates were not significantly different from unprotected control populations. Thus predation by fish and invertebrates combined was sufficient to limit chydorid density. The hypothesis that the predation was due primarily to fish was not supported. It is suggested that because chydorids are smaller and less accessible than preferred prey items, fish are able to significantly utilize them only during periods of high chydorid abundance.  相似文献

Population densities, migrations and food composition of Echinogammarus veneris in Lake Kinneret were studied during march–September 1976. Migrations are affected by changes of water level and littoral currents. Peridinium was abundant in the gut content during its blooming period in the lake while cladocerans, benthic copepods, rotifers and other algae were abundantly found in other months. Metabolic parameters that were calculated for the gammarid population indicated that its contribution to the carbon-flow system in Lake Kinneret is negligible in comparison with nematodes, molluscans or planktonic copepods and cladocerans.  相似文献

The remains of cladocerans were examined from the surface sediments of 51 freshwater sites along a north–south transect spanning Alaska. We identified 27 cladoceran taxa from the sediments, consisting primarily of littoral chydorid species. Variations in cladoceran assemblages were related to measured physical and chemical variables using multivariate techniques. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that lake depth, total phosphorus (TP), and altitude all had a significant influence in determining the composition of cladoceran assemblages. Cladoceran communities in tundra and forest-tundra lakes, which were relatively shallow and nutrient-poor, had relatively low abundances of pelagic Cladocera, and were primarily composed of several littoral chydorid species. Among pelagic cladoceran species, there was a distinct shift in dominance from the Bosminidae in lakes in the southern boreal forest region to Daphniidae in lakes in the northern boreal forest. Daphnia dominated lakes had significantly higher total phosphorus, specific conductivity, and calcium concentrations than lakes dominated by Eubosmina. Overall, the relative importance of physical and chemical factors in structuring cladocerans is similar to other previously studied regions, and suggests the Cladocera may be useful as ecological and paleoenvironmental indicators in this region.  相似文献

Synopsis The abundance and habitat distribution of littoral zone fishes in two small southern Florida lakes were quantified by underwater censuses. The bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and large-mouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) accounted for 75–80% of community biomass in both lakes; important coexisting species were predominantly benthic feeders in Lake Sirena and planktivores in Lake Annie. All species were largely confined to areas of macrovegetation which extended to a depth of 4 m in Lake Annie but only to 1.2 m in Lake Sirena. The differences in community structure were related to differences in habitat and also variation in water levels and benthic production.A comparison of community composition with that of small Michigan lakes indicated that similar numbers of species coexist in the littoral zones, despite a three-fold difference in the size of regional species pools. The majority of families and about 50% of the species were common to lakes in both regions; in addition a number of ecological analogues were noted. A major difference was that the small inshore species were members of the Cyprinodontiformes in Florida and Cyprinidae in Michigan. Together the largemouth bass and bluegill comprise similar community proportions in the two regions as do other major feeding groups. Lakes in the two regions that are similar in amount and distribution of vegetation exhibit greater similarity in fish communities than those within regions that differ in littoral vegetation.  相似文献

  • 1 The littoral microcrustacean community (Cladocera and Copepoda) was examined from 1989 to 1991 in a lake experimentally acidified to pH 4.5, and from 1992 to 1997 during the early stages of pH recovery.
  • 2 Cladoceran abundance declined significantly from 1989 to 1991 (pH 4.5), but species richness did not change. Acantholeberis curvirostris, Simocephalus serrulatus, Latona spp. (Latona setifera, L. parviremis), and all species of chydorid Cladocera declined markedly in abundance while at pH 4.5. The abundance of cyclopoid copepods was low and Ceriodaphnia and calanoid copepods were absent.
  • 3 Recovery of the community was subsequently monitored as pH was incrementally changed to a target pH 5.1 in 1992 and 1993, and to 5.8 in 1994–97. Species richness remained unchanged. Chydorid cladocerans remained at low abundance in 1992, and only Chydorus cf. brevilabris increased substantially from 1993 to 1996. Non‐chydorid Cladocera increased in abundance in 1992, declined again in 1993, then gradually increased (mainly due to Ophryoxus gracilis) in 1994–96. All species declined in 1997 as minnows recolonized the lake. The calanoid copepod Leptodiaptomus minutus was present in low numbers in 1997.
  • 4 The microcrustacean community in the littoral zone of Lake 302S has not yet shown consistent signs of recovery from acidification.

Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus showed variation in their diet and trophic morphology based on habitat. Pelagic L. macrochirus feed almost exclusively on cladocerans; littoral L. macrochirus feed on a variety of benthic invertebrates, molluscs, cladocerans and insects. Fish from the littoral habitat had wider pharyngeal jaws, which probably allowed them to crush gastropods and process benthic invertebrates.  相似文献

This study identified two scales of pattern in the assemblages of Chydoridae (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) in the shallow (<2 m) littoral zone of Plastic Lake, Ontario, Canada in the autumn of 1987. Twenty chydorid species were collected in 15 over-night sets of funnel traps in each of four habitat types. Analysis of variance multivariate analysis of variance, and discriminant function analysis revealed that assemblages differed among the habitats. Alona intermedia, Alona quadrangularis and Chydorus bicornutus were particularly abundant in the most structurally diverse habitat type – muddy, rock-strewn areas with approximately 40% bottom cover by the pipewort, Eriocaulon septangulare. In contrast, Anchistropus cf. minor was caught most often on bare shelves of rock. A second set of analyses demonstrated that chydorid assemblages also differed at a smaller scale, i.e. with local patchiness in bottom cover by the dominant macrophyte (E. septangulare). The abundance of Alona affinis was positively correlated with cover by E. septangulare, whereas Anchistropus cf. minor was caught mainly in microhabitats without vegetation. Alona intermedia and A. quadrangularis were most abundant in microhabitats with intermediate amounts of vegetation, suggesting their abundance is influenced by habitat factors other than vegetation.  相似文献

The hydrobiid snailPotamopyrgus jenkinsi (E.A. Smith), characterized by parthenogenesis and ovovivipary, was quantitatively sampled monthly between June, 1982, and December, 1986, on sandy bottoms in the shallow zones of the meso-oligotrophic Lake Maarsseveen I and the eutrophic Lake Maarsseveen II. The snail demonstrated a very clumped distribution in both lakes. The mean numbers of juveniles and adults taken together fluctuated strongly. Organisms in Lake I showed relatively high densities (up to 25,000 per m2) in 1982, followed by a sudden drop to values approaching zero in December, 1982, with a subsequent rapid increase in densities, fluctuating between 2,000 and 200 per m2. In Lake II, densities of snails fluctuated between 13,000 and 300 per m2 with decreases in the spring of 1985 and 1986. The various types of decreases in the lakes are extensively discussed, but no explanation is presently available. The reduction in Lake I was of catastrophic proportions, but the speed of recovery of the population was remarkable.Floating was observed only in Lake I, and only during the occurrence of the highest densities on the sediment. Burrowing behaviour was very common, but strongly suppressed under an uninterrupted dark regime. A shift of temperature from 15 to 22°C had the same effect. A number of submerged macrophyte species from Lake I proved to attractP. jenkinsi in the absence of sandy substrate, though these plants were only covered by the snail during the period of the highest densities in 1982. Temperatures of 20°C or lower were well tolerated, unlike temperatures of 25 and 30°C. Growth was distinct at 10, 15 and 20°C. Keeled individuals were encountered in much higher numbers in Lake I than in Lake II.  相似文献

The cosmopolitanism paradigm in the biogeography of freshwater invertebrates is currently being replaced by non-cosmopolitanism or continental endemism. Benthic water fleas (Cladocera) from the family Chydoridae were the first group of freshwater invertebrates for which non-cosmopolitanism and cryptic diversity was substantiated by morphological studies. Yet, little is known about genetic differentiation and evolutionary history of chydorid species complexes. Here we present the first analysis of the genetic versus morphological differentiation in a benthic cladoceran species complex—Chydorus sphaericus s. str. using sequence variation in a nuclear (ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2, ITS-2) and a mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI) genes in 50 Holarctic localities. We tested for continental endemism and cryptic diversity predicted by previous morphological studies. We found evidence for the presence of at least seven putative regional species in the Holarctic, at least three of them being distributed beyond a single continent. While the molecular and sexual stage characters showed general concordance on species lineages, parthenogenetic female characters lacked resolution or were unassociated with molecular lineages. We conclude that cryptic regional lineages of benthic cladocerans are apparent and that the sexual stages represent the most informative morphological source of species characters for this environmental indicator group.  相似文献

The benthic environment and fauna of Lake Turkana were studied during 1978–1979 to determine distribution patterns and associations of benthic invertebrates. Lake Turkana is a large, closed-basin, alkaline lake, located in northern Kenya.Detailed environmental information is currently only available for substrate variations throughout Lake Turkana. Water chemistry and other data are currently inadequate to evaluate their effects on the distribution of Lake Turkana benthic invertebrates. Three weak faunal-substrate associations were discovered at Turkana. A littoral, soft bottom association (large standing crop) is dominated by the corixid Micronecta sp. and the ostracod Hemicypris kliei. A littoral, rocky bottom association, also with a large standing crop, is dominated by various gastropods and insects. A profundal, muddy bottom association, with a very small standing crop, is dominated by the ostracods Hemicypris intermedia and Sclerocypris cf. clavularis and several gastropod and chironomid species.  相似文献

The desmid flora of mesotrophic Lake Maarsseveen I, eutrophic Lake Maarsseveen II, as well as the interconnecting broads was studied during the period 1987–1991. Seasonal perodicity of euplanktonicStaurastrum andCosmarium species in the two Maarsseveen lakes fitted the well-known general pattern of desmid abundance peaks in (late) summer time. The deviating seasonality of two euplanktonicClosterium species (C. aciculare andC. acutum var.variabile) could be related to special nutritional demands. The tychoplanktonic desmid flora encountered in the interconnecting system of peat pits and canals proved to be more diversified as the influence of nutrient-poor seepage on the habitat (appearing from conductivity, transparency and the occurrence of particular macrophyte species) was greater. The rare speciesEuastrum germanicum andHeimansia pusilla had been only incidentally recorded in The Netherlands. Hanny Kooyman-van Blokland untimely died at the age of forty, in March 1994.  相似文献

  • 1 The potential importance of interactions between macro- and meiobenthos in the littoral zone of takes was studied in a series of laboratory experiments with a chironomid and a chydorid.
  • 2 In a situation of intraspecific density dependence, Chydorus piger Sars inhibited the growth of Chironomus riparius Meigen, while both second- and fourth-instar C, riparius stimulated the parthenogenetic reproduction of C. piger.
  • 3 The meiofaunal chydorids may thus have a structuring effect on macrofaunal chironomid populations by interfering with the early-instar larvae.
  • 4 With macro- and meiofaunal species both operating at the primary consumer-level of the food web, this kind of complex interaction will affect the magnitude of secondary production available to higher trophic levels.

Submerged macrophytes may play an important role as a refuge for zooplankton against predators. However, a recent study suggests that their importance depends on the trophic state of the lake. We studied the impact of fish and macrophytes on the horizontal distribution of pelagic cladocerans in 56 oligotrophic arctic Greenland lakes. In north-east and western Greenland, zooplankton was sampled in the near-shore (littoral) and central (pelagial) part of all lakes and fish were sampled with multiple mesh-sized gill nets. Macrophytes were visually estimated in the littoral. In north-east Greenland, 5 taxa of cladocerans were found, while 14 taxa were recorded in western Greenland. Daphnia pulex occurred only in fishless lakes in both northeast and western Greenland and avoided the near-shore areas in the shallow and deep lakes. Bosmina spp. and Holopedium gibberum were evenly distributed between the littoral and the pelagial in the deep and shallow fishless lakes. However, their near-shore density was lowest in the presence of fish. Macrophyte-related and benthic cladocerans concentrated either in the littoral or were evenly distributed between the littoral and the pelagial, irrespective of depth and fish presence or absence. Macrophytes had no impact on the horizontal distribution of pelagic cladocerans. Thus, it is concluded that horizontal heterogeneity of Bosmina spp. and Holopedium gibberum might be affected by the presence of fish.  相似文献

1. Emergence traps were set overnight on the sediment surface to sample the littoral microcrustaceans of 22 Canadian Shield lakes that ranged in pH from 4.56 to 6.92. Traps were randomly allocated in quintuplicate in both wave‐washed sandy habitats where pipewort (Eriocaulon septangulare) was the dominant macrophyte (termed pipewort habitats), and more protected habitats dominated by floating‐leaved macrophytes (termed floating‐leaved habitats). 2. In total, 50 cladoceran and 22 copepod species were found, with 16–45 species in each lake. Lakes that had never acidified exhibited a more diverse fauna than lakes that had acidified. 3. There were only minor differences between the numbers of species found in floating‐leaved versus pipewort habitats except for one lake. Non‐chydorid cladoceran, chydorids and copepods constituted 45%, 26% and 29% of the total number of individuals, respectively. 4. Based on presence/absence, dominance scores and frequency of occurrences of species, the microcrustacean faunal composition was similar in the two habitats. A detrended correspondence analysis confirmed that there was no separation between the two main types of habitat, and that pH was the parameter most strongly correlated with the dominant microcrustacean compositional gradient among lakes.  相似文献
