The oviducts of Locusta migratoria are innervated by a pair of nerves which arise from, the seventh abdominal ganglion. A distinctive network of striated muscle fibres occurs in the oviducts. The lateral oviducts and common oviduct consist of an inner circular layer of muscle and an outer longitudinal layer of muscle. At the junction of the lateral and common oviduct an additional thin longitudinal layer is found adjacent to the basement epithelium. The oviducts contracted spontaneously when isolated from the central nervous system. These myogenic contractions took the form of peristaltic contractions in the lateral oviduct, and intermittent phasic-like contractions of the posterior regions of the lateral oviduct and the common oviduct. These phasic-like contractions were associated with individual complex potentials recorded extracellularly from the muscle fibres. In locusts that had been interrupted in the process of egg laying, there were large-amplitude action potentials, firing in a bursting pattern, in the oviducal nerves. These large action potentials were absent in locusts that had not been egg-laying. These action potentials were associated with both bioelectric potentials and mechanical events in the posterior region of the lateral oviduct and the common oviduct. Electrical stimulation of the oviducal nerve mimicked the effects of spontaneous action potentials, resulting in the appearance of monophasic potentials and contractions. The contractions were graded and dependent upon both frequency and duration of stimulation. It is concluded that the oviducts of Locusta are both myogenic and neurogenic. The role of these contractions in oviposition is discussed.  相似文献

The sexual behaviour of Chorthippus curtipennis females consists of ‘primary defence’, passive and active copulatory readiness, ‘secondary defence’, and egg-laying behaviour. Mechanical or chemical stimulation of the spermatheca by the spermatophore does not cause the release of ‘secondary defence‘; chemical stimuli deriving from the ovaries can also be excluded. ‘Secondary defence’ is triggered by the pressure of natural or artificial eggs against the walls of the lateral oviducts.  相似文献

Reproduction was studied in a South Carolina population of the paedomorphic salamander Siren intermedia with emphasis on anatomy of the female oviduct. The oviduct forms 67–79% of the snout-vent length in this elongate species and can be divided into three portions. The atrium, 7–13% of oviducal length, is the narrow anteriormost portion, with the ostial opening immediately caudad of the transverse septum. The ampulla, 63–75% of oviducal length, is the highly convoluted, middle portion in which gelatinous coverings are added to the eggs during their passage. Hypertrophy of the oviducal glands in the ampulla causes the ampulla to increase in diameter during the ovipository season. The secretion of the eosinophilic oviducal glands is intensely positive following staining with the periodic acid-Schiff procedure and does not react with alcian blue at pH 2.5. This staining reaction, coupled with the presence of abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complexes, indicates that the secretion contains a glycoprotein. The ovisac, 16–25% of oviducal length, is the most posterior portion of the oviduct and holds up to 10–11 eggs prior to oviposition. Oviducal glands similar to those in the ampulla are absent in the ovisac. Oviposition in female sirens occurs during February-April in this population, and male spermiation is concurrent. Entire oviducts were sectioned from three females collected during the ovipository season and from two collected prior to the breeding season, and sperm were not found in the oviducts of these specimens. Thus no evidence was found for internal fertilization or sperm storage in the oviducts of sirens. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In Carausius morosus, egg-laying activity is nocturnal. When an oöcyte leaves the ovariole (ovulation) during the day, it remains in a chamber which is located between the genital valves until the evening. The admission of another egg into the common oviduct is possible only when the egg chamber is empty. Nerve cord transection between the 7th and 8th abdominal ganglia interrupts the reflex which controls the progression of the egg through the common oviduct.Sensory hairs on the walls of the egg chamber, which is innervated by the 8th abdominal ganglion, are described. The information perceived by these sensory hairs enters the 8th ganglion, then travels to the 7th which innervates the oviducts. Present experimental results together with the observed existence of numerous anastomoses between the segmental nerves from different ganglia, suggest that though the normal reflex travels via the nerve cord, a lateral pathway is also possible.The effector is the common oviduct. The muscular sheath of this organ shows a special feature which is related to the control of egg passage: the muscle fibres no longer form a complete layer as they do in the lateral oviducts but rather form a half-sleeve of circular fibres around the dorsal face. The contraction of this half-cylindrical muscle prevents the progression of eggs.  相似文献

在孕酮作用厂,切除卵巢的中华大蟾蜍输卵管上皮细胞不仅能够使外源移植的卵母细胞在输卵管中正常运行,还保证卵母细胞正常受精。根据输卵管卷曲部分泌物的SDS-PAGE分析,存在依赖孕酮的33kD蛋白质。经兔抗33kD蛋白抗体处理具输卵管分泌物的卵母细胞,受精率受到显著抑制·提示该蛋白有促受精活性。输卵管分泌物介入受精涉及复杂的多种因子。  相似文献

In the Ibaraki population (Japan) of Locusta migratoria, adult locusts produce diapause eggs under short-day (SD) conditions and non-diapause eggs under long-day (LD) conditions. The identity and titre of ecdysteroids in the ovaries and eggs from LD and SD adult females were investigated by RIA/HPLC. Maternal ecdysteroids accumulated in the developing ovaries represented about 90% polar conjugates, 5% free ecdysteroids and 5% non-hydrolyzable metabolites. Before oviposition the quantity of ecdysteroids reached 29.8±1.85 ng 20-hydroxyecdysone equiv. per mg tissue ovaries from LD females and 13.1±3.55 ng 20E equiv./mg in ovaries from SD females. The sum of RIA-positive materials in newly laid eggs was more than three times higher in non-diapause eggs than in diapause eggs. Ecdysteroids present in egg extracts comprised about 85% polar conjugates, 5% free ecdysteroids and 10% non-hydrolyzable metabolites. On the other hand, after diapause termination the amount of ecdysteroids increased drastically. Also, the composition of ecdysteroids differed from that observed during diapause and became comparable to that of non-diapause eggs. The significant differences in the ecdysteroids between non-diapause and diapause eggs may suggest the possible involvement of these compounds in the control of embryonic diapause of this locust.  相似文献

To help understand the nature of skeletal changes during the reproductive cycle of the female alligator, we compared femoral robusticity (density) and porosity of cross-sections from the midshafts of femora from the following groups of female alligators: (1) immature; (2) pre-ovulatory; (3) postovulatory with soft-shelled oviducal eggs; (4) post-ovulatory with hard-shelled oviducal eggs; (5) post-ovulatory with eggs in the nest; (6) post-ovulatory with hatched eggs; and (7) mature, quiescent. Femora from alligators with eggs in the nest were significantly less robust (dense) than those of the other groups except those with hard-shelled oviducal eggs. Cross sections from the midshaft of femora from alligators with eggs in the nest were significantly more porous than those from all the other groups. The results indicated that calcium was mobilized from the femoral shaft shortly before eggs were laid and that femoral density returned to normal levels for mature alligators 1–2 months after egg-laying.  相似文献

The quantity and localization of -Phe-Gly-Leu-amide allatostatins (-F-G-L-amide AST) was determined by ELISA and immunohistochemistry in ovaries and oviducts and in pre-dorsal closure embryos. AST in the cytoplasm of basal oocytes gradually increased from 4 to 35 fmol/ovary pair from the start (day 2) to the completion of vitellogenesis (day 6), then rapidly increased to 121 fmol/ovary pair during choriogenesis. In oviducts, AST-immunoreactivity was found in nerves to the muscle layer and in epithelial cells. AST-immunoreactivity in oviduct epithelial cells increased during vitellogenesis. A marked increase in quantity of AST in oviduct tissue between completion of chorion formation and immediately after ovulation appears to result from AST released from oocytes as they travel down the oviducts because AST content of newly ovulated eggs was 40% lower than late stage chorionated oocytes, and these oocytes released AST when incubated in saline. AST in embryos, localized in yolk cells, decreased as embryos approached dorsal closure. That this material in ovaries and embryos is AST was confirmed by its ability to inhibit JH synthesis in vitro and identification by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry of a peptide with a mass corresponding to that of a Diploptera punctata AST. These findings indicate likely novel functions for ASTs: facilitation of ovulation and utilization of yolk.  相似文献

The oviducal muscles of the locust, Locusta migratoria, contract in a spontaneous and rhythmic fashion when isolated from the central nervous system. Hemolymph of ovipositing females, when added to isolated locust oviducts, altered the spontaneous contractility of the oviduct. This response was not evident after addition of hemolymph from a nonovipositing female and was still present after addition of the α-aminergic receptor antagonist, phentolamine. Oviducts in which mature eggs were present responded to homogenates of the corpus cardiacum by increasing both the frequency and amplitude of muscular contraction, whereas oviducts devoid of eggs showed no response. Extracts of ventral nerve cord also increased the spontaneous activity of the oviduct musculature. Although the muscles of the oviduct responded to homogenates of the brain, this response differed in two ways from the response due to corpus cardiacum homogenates. First, oviducts devoid of mature eggs responded to brain homogenates; and second, the response caused by the brain homogenates could be eliminated by the addition of 1 μM phenoxybenzamine. Following selection of an appropriate egg-laying site desert locusts lay their eggs at depths in soil by digging their abdomen into the substrate using rhythmic movements of their abdomen and hard, sclerotised ovipositor valves. We have analysed the role of contact chemoreception on egg-laying behaviour and on the rhythmic digging movements of the valves. All chemicals tested acted aversively and reduced both the duration spent egg-laying and the number of eggs laid, with the concentration at which they became aversive being dependent on whether the chemical was normally present in the diet. Chemicals such as sucrose and a lysine glutamate salt prevented egg-laying only at much higher concentrations than known anti-feedants such as nicotine hydrogen tartrate and hydroquinine. Similarly for animals in which fictive digging movements were induced all chemicals stopped the digging rhythm, with sucrose and sodium chloride inhibiting the rhythm at relatively high concentrations compared to NHT and hydroquinone. We conclude that for both egg-laying behaviour and rhythmic digging that the aversiveness of a chemical rather than its identity per se plays a major role in regulating behaviour.  相似文献

Sterol sulfatase activity was probed with tritiated cholesteryl sulfate in the reproductive tract of seven non-pregnant Suffolk ewes. The enzyme activity was expressed in endometrial, ovarian and oviducal tissue homogenates. The highest specific activities were found in oviducal fluids recovered by flushing the excised oviducts with buffer. Sterol sulfatase was also highly active in oviducal fluids collected during oestrus in conscious ewes through surgically inserted catheters. While part of the enzymatic activity in oviducal fluids was present in a soluble form, most was associated with secretory granules as evidenced by electron microscopy. In view of the fact that oviducal fluid is the medium in which the mammalian egg is normally fertilized, these findings support the hypothesis that sterol sulfatase plays a role in the process of sperm capacitation in the ewe.  相似文献

High reproductive skew among colony members is a fundamental feature of insect’s societies, where one or few individuals monopolize reproductive output. However, many social insect species retain a high reproductive plasticity, with all colony members able of developing ovaries and laying eggs. Understanding the partition of reproduction inside these plastic societies is a key step in the comprehension of social evolution. The reproductive status of social insects is usually evaluated by looking at the degree of ovarian development, and a great variety of different methods has been used even in the same species. It is not known, however, to which extent the different methods give comparable results and represent good indexes of individual egg-laying activity. We used the model paper wasp species Polistes dominula to tackle these issues, by compiling the main methods of ovarian development assessment on the same set of individuals and quantifying their egg-laying activity. Our results showed that all examined methods give similar and highly correlated results, but none of them allows reliable estimates of the egg-laying activity. Ovarian indexes (whatever method is used) are good indicators of individual reproductive potential, but can only roughly reflect actual reproductive activity. We thus propose to be very cautious in extrapolating egg-laying activity levels from ovarian index estimations.  相似文献

The new information reported in this paper is based on five maturing and mature females of the large-tuberculate octopus Graneledone macrotyla. These specimens were caught in bottom trawl surveys ATLANTIS 2009 (February 24 to April 1, 2009) and ATLANTIS 2010 (March 9 to April 5, 2010) carried out off the Argentinean Economic Exclusive Zone. Capture depth ranged from 475 to 921 m and sea bottom temperature between 2.8 and 3.1 °C. Development of the complex ovary, oviducts, and oviducal glands during gonadic maturation is described. The absence of spermathecae in the oviducal glands and the presence of fertilized eggs inside the ovary suggested that fertilization took place within the ovary. Histological techniques showed the presence of four types of oocytes. Maturing oocyte size–frequency distribution was polymodal. Fluorescence reaction showed that atresia occurred in both early and later oocyte maturation stages. Atresia affected 48–55 % of the initial number of oocytes. The maximum observed potential fecundity was estimated at 250–300 eggs. G. macrotyla showed a group-synchronous ovulation pattern, regulative atresia, and a batching spawning pattern with a few egg batches spawned intermittently over an extended period of spawning.  相似文献

Summary In 27 adult female specimens of Rana temporaria, the total interruption of the nervous pathways to the median eminence and the hypophysis was performed, without disturbing the normal blood supply of the hypophysis. In eight cases this complete interruption persisted three months after operation. In these animals there occurred no seasonal development of the eggs, ovaries and oviducts. In the 19 other operated animals a varying degree of regeneration of the interrupted nerve fibres occurred. In these animals a varying number of ripe eggs was present, but in many of them there existed a significant difference between the weight of their ovaries compared with that of the ovaries of the control animals. In all control animals the seasonal development of the ovaries and oviducts was normal. From these and from previous experiments it could be concluded that the A. F. negative nerve fibres of the median eminence, not originating from the magnocellular neurosecretory preoptic nuclei, are responsible for the normal seasonal development of the ovaries and oviducts in Rana temporaria. It must be these nerve fibres that release gonadotropic releasing factors into the blood capillaries of the median eminence. The A. F. positive neurosecretory fibres, the portal circulation of the pars distalis and the pituicytes of the median eminence play only a secondary part during this period of control of the gonadotropic activity of the hypophysis.  相似文献

Egg laying in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a two-state behavior modulated by internal and external sensory input. We have previously shown that homeostatic feedback of embryo accumulation in the uterus regulates bursting activity of the serotonergic HSN command neurons that sustains the egg-laying active state. How sensory feedback of egg release signals to terminate the egg-laying active state is less understood. We find that Gαo, a conserved Pertussis Toxin-sensitive G protein, signals within HSN to inhibit egg-laying circuit activity and prevent entry into the active state. Gαo signaling hyperpolarizes HSN, reducing HSN Ca2+ activity and input onto the postsynaptic vulval muscles. Loss of inhibitory Gαo signaling uncouples presynaptic HSN activity from a postsynaptic, stretch-dependent homeostat, causing precocious entry into the egg-laying active state when only a few eggs are present in the uterus. Feedback of vulval opening and egg release activates the uv1 neuroendocrine cells which release NLP-7 neuropeptides which signal to inhibit egg laying through Gαo-independent mechanisms in the HSNs and Gαo-dependent mechanisms in cells other than the HSNs. Thus, neuropeptide and inhibitory Gαo signaling maintain a bi-stable state of electrical excitability that dynamically controls circuit activity in response to both external and internal sensory input to drive a two-state behavior output.  相似文献

Adult desert locusts were experimentally infected per os with 30, 50, or 60 Mermis nigrescens eggs, and changes in the host physiology were recorded. Larval nematodes were recovered from the hemocoel and counted at appropriate times after infection. The food consumption and blood volume of the host were unaffected by the parasitism, but the nematode significantly impaired the ability of male locusts to excrete the injected dye, amaranth, from their hemolymph. The total carbohydrate in the hemolymph of infected male and female locusts was severely depleted during the active growth period of the nematode and the possible utilization of these carbohydrates by the nematode are discussed. The total amino acid and protein levels in the blood of the host were unaffected by the nematode development, although concomittant changes in the levels of both these blood metabolites occurred in all locusts throughout the experimental period. However, although changes of this nature reflected the normal pattern of protein synthesis during oocyte development and oviposition in control locusts, the nematode suppressed oocyte development and caused oocyte resorption in the female host. The nematode did not significantly affect the level of total protein and amino acids in the flight muscles of male and female locusts, but a significant decrease in the level of fat body proteins and amino acids was recorded in infected hosts 16 and 21 days after infection. The possible effect of the nematode on protein metabolism by the host fat body is discussed in relation to the nutritional requirements of the nematode and involvement of the host endocrine system.  相似文献

The migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) exhibits clear phenotypic plasticity depending on its population density. Previous studies have explored the molecular mechanisms of body colour, behavior, immunity, and metabolism between high population density gregarious (G) and low population density solitarious (S) locusts. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying differences in reproductive traits remain unknown. G locusts reach sexual maturation much faster and lay larger eggs compared with S locusts. The traits of G locusts decreased significantly with isolation, whereas those of S locusts increased with crowding. Analysis of gene expression in female adults indicated that syntaxin 1A (Syx1A) was expressed significantly higher in G locusts than in S locusts. After silencing Syx1A expression in G locusts by RNA interference (RNAi), their sexual maturity rate and progeny egg size changed towards those of S locusts. Similarly, increment in the traits of S locusts with crowding was blocked by Syx1A interference. Changes in the traits were also confirmed by decrease in the level of vitellogenin, which is regulated by Syx1A. In conclusion, plasticity of the sexual maturity rate and progeny egg size of G and S locusts, which is beneficial for locusts to adapt to environmental changes, is regulated by Syx1A.  相似文献

The neurohaemal, lateral branch of the median nerve in Carausius morosus and the neurohaemal, ventral motor nerve of Rhodnius prolixus are stimulated by acetylcholine to increase the frequency of action potentials recorded via extracellular electrodes from isolated nerves. Physostigmine potentiates electrical activity in both insects and hemicholinium-3 has a depressant effect on Carausius preparations. These results suggests a cholinergic mechanism associated with neurosecretory activity.  相似文献

Crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) stimulates the contractions of locust oviducts. CCAP increased the basal tonus and increased the frequency and amplitude of phasic contractions, as well as the amplitude of neurally-evoked oviduct contractions in a dose-dependent manner. Oviducts from Vth instar larvae and adult locusts aged 10 days or less, were more sensitive to CCAP than oviducts from adult locusts aged 12 days or more. This may be indicative of a differential expression of number or subtypes of CCAP receptors on the oviducts at different ages, and may be related to reproductive functions or to functions of CCAP on the oviducts during ecdysis. The oviducts appear more sensitive to CCAP when compared with previously published reports of CCAP actions on the hindgut. CCAP actions on the amplitude of neurally-evoked contractions of the oviducts are similar to those of proctolin, however, the oviducts are more sensitive to CCAP. No CCAP-like immunoreactive structures were discovered in the nerves innervating the oviducts, or on the oviducts themselves, confirming the previously published suggestion (Dircksen et al., 1991) that CCAP acts as a neurohormone at the oviducts. Cells showing CCAP-like immunoreactivity were discovered in the fat body associated with the oviducts and represent a potential source of CCAP, along with CCAP released from the transverse nerve and perivisceral organs.  相似文献

Coloration phase state, morphometrical ratios and the numbers of mature oocytes of Locusta migratoria migratoria were examined in a series of experiments to determine the means by which phase characteristics are passed to the next generation. Washing with distilled water of eggs from egg pods laid by gregarious crowd-reared females resulted in solitarization of the hatchlings after their isolation, indicating that a factor present in eggs encapsulated in foam is causal to gregarization. Such locusts showed a significant shift towards the typical solitarious body coloration, morphometry and number of mature oocytes as compared to locusts resulting from unwashed eggs. Gregarious coloration, morphometrical ratios and oocyte numbers could be partially restored when hatchlings from washed eggs were regrouped. When gregarious locusts were reared in isolation, they showed a solitary body color, whereas, morphometry and oocyte numbers were not affected by isolation.  相似文献
