The flow of nutrients through the digestive tract of Gryllus bimaculatus is regulated by the proventriculus, which effectively triturates the partially digested food coming from the crop and shoves the mushy nutrient mass into the space between the paired caeca. The many folds at the base of the caeca form a sieve, and only fine food particles (4-10 microm) and fluids in the mush are filtered under pressure (produced by proventricular peristalsis) into the caeca. Combined with the release of enzymes in the caeca and the influx of water, the caeca are rapidly inflated on day 1 after the terminal molt. The remaining, mostly undigested food is shoved into a tube formed by the peritrophic membrane, which is first formed at the anterior end of the ventriculus. A mucous membrane (peritrophic gel) covers the caecal epithelium, and seems to merge with the true peritrophic membrane at the beginning of the ventriculus. The Type I peritrophic membrane is dragged posteriorly through the entire ventriculus and ileum by the posterior movement of the food bolus, which is shoved posteriorly at a rate of 6 mm/h by proventricular pressure. The growth rate of the peritrophic membrane is about 3 mm/h. Peristalsis does not occur in the midgut or ileum; the muscles in these regions function solely to counteract the internal pressure produced by the proventriculus. The exo- and endoperitrophic space in newly molted animals is open and fluids can flow in both directions. The endoperitrophic space becomes filled on day 1, and leads to a great reduction of the exoperitrophic space. In the ileal pouch (exoperitrophic space) the peritrophic membrane separates the mass of bacteria from the waste bolus within the endoperitrophic space. Feathery bristles arising from the cuticular covering of the finger-like invaginations of the ileal wall hold most of the bacterial mass in place. The crop weight decreases from day 1 to day 3 as the weight of caeca, ventriculus, and ileum increases. After day 3, food uptake and the weight of the entire gut system decrease in female crickets, partly in response to space restrictions in the abdomen caused by rapid ovarial growth.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the gut regions of the marine filter-feeder Phoronis vancouverensis was correlated with enzyme activity as revealed histochemically. The oesophagus, proventriculus, and stomach epithlia showed intense esterase and acid and alkaline phosphatase activity. The staining reaction was confined primarily to small globules in the apical cytoplasm of the epithlial cells. Electron micrographs of the same regions showed a high incidence of zymogenlike granules, with a corresponding abundance of ribosomes and of rough endoplasmic reticulum. Also, the proventricular and to a lesser extent the stomach epithelia were found to contain a large number of lipid bodies. This was confirmed with positive Sudan IV staining for fats. The intestinal region of the gut was found devoid of esterase and phosphatase activity. The epithelial surface in this region was found elaborated into microvilli. The entire gut is ci iated. A new paired-cilium apparatus is described in this phylum. From these findings Phoronis vancouverensis is concluded to be suitably adapted to its continuous filter-feeding existence, with the anterior gut epithelia synthesizing hydrolytic enzymes for release into the lumina of the proventriculus and stomach. Subsequently, in the hindgut the products of initial extra-cellular digestion are absorbed via the microvilli and treated intracellularly within the intestinal epithelium. The proventriculus is further thought to function in lipid absorption and storage. The presence of chromaffin-like granules observed in some proventricular and intestinal epithelial cells suggests that digestion in this phylum may in part be under neurosecretory control.  相似文献

In vitro organ culture system which permits embryonic chick proventriculus (glandular stomach) to synthesize pepsinogen de novo was developed. Explants of the proventricular rudiment were cultured on Millipore filters in Medium 199 with Earle's salts supplemented with 50% 12-day embryo extract at 38°C in 95% air and 5% CO2.
In these culture conditions, pepsinogen, a functional marker protein of proventriculus, was first detected after 3 days of cultivation of 6-day chick proventricular rudiment. When recombined and cultured with 6-day proventricular mesenchyme, 6-day oesophageal, proventricular or gizzard (muscular stomach) epithelium expressed pepsinogen while small intestinal epithelium did not. These results were consistent with the previous results obtained by chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) grafting, and showed that the culture conditions are permissive for pepsinogen expression.
When recombined and cultured with reaggregated mesenchymal cells isolated from 6-day proventricular mesenchymal fragments, both 6-day proventricular and gizzard epithelia formed glandular structure and expressed pepsinogen. This indicates that the proventricular mesenchymal cells retain the ability to induce morphogenesis and cytodifferentiation of the proventricular epithelium even if the normal organization of proventricular mesenchyme is once destroyed.  相似文献

The cuticular lining of the stomodeum in orthopteroid insects usually bears cuticular structures, consisting of ridges, teeth, and spines, which are sometimes fairly complex. In some of these insects, particularly cockroaches and Orthoptera s. str., some of these structures have systematic value, mainly at the higher systematic levels. The cuticular lining of the stomodeum in Paulinia acuminata (De Geer) and Marellia remipes (Uvarov) (Orthoptera : Pauliniidae) (the only 2 genera included within the family) have been studied. Wide differences in the pattern of the stomodeal armature, and also in the shape, size and distribution of the spines in its different parts, are recorded. The proportions and limits of the crop and proventriculus, and the form and spatial distribution of spines and other characters, relative to the ridges, appear to be of taxonomic significance. They indicate that the 2 genera may not be closely related, as has been suggested, based on other evidence. While Marelliaappears to be related to the Acrididae, Pauliniaseems to be isolated from other acridoids, except for certain features in common with Proscopiidae and Eumastacidae.  相似文献

Summary The avian stomach is composed of two distinct organs, the proventriculus and the gizzard. Pepsinogen expression in the proventricular and gizzard epithelia of chick embryos was investigated immunohistochemically with anti-embryonic chick pepsinogen (anti-ECPg) antiserum. In normal development, the ECPg antigen was expressed only in the glandular epithelial cells of the embryonic proventriculus from the 8th day of incubation onwards. However, both proventricular and gizzard epithelia of 6-day embryos expressed the ECPg antigen when recombined and cultured with the proventricular mesenchyme. Chronological studies revealed that the ECPg antigen was first detected in a few epithelial cells at 3 days of cultivation. The percentage of ECPg-positive cells among the total epithelial cells in each recombinant increased with the length of the culture period and all the glandular epithelial cells were positive at 9 days. During this process, the percentage of ECPg-positive cells in each cultured recombinant was similar in proventricular and gizzard epithelia. Moreover, both epithelia could express the ECPg antigen when recombined and cultured with the oesophageal or small-intestine mesenchyme for 9 days, though the percentage of ECPg-positive cells in each cultured recombinant was much lower than that in the cultured recombinant with the proventricular mesenchyme. These results indicate that the gizzard epithelium of 6-day chick embryos possesses a similar potential for pepsinogen expression as the proventricular epithelium of the same age.  相似文献

Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions are necessary for the normal development of various digestive organs. In chicken proventriculus (glandular stomach), morphogenesis and differentiation of the epithelium depend upon the inductive signals coming from underlying mesenchyme. However, the nature of such signals is still unclear despite extensive analyses carried out using experimental tissue recombinations. In this study we have examined the possible involvement of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in the formation of stomach glands in the chicken embryo. Analysis of the expression patterns of BMP-2, -4 and -7 showed that these BMPs were present in the proventricular mesenchyme prior to the initiation of the proventricular gland formation. BMP-2 expression, in particular, was restricted to the proventriculus among anterior digestive organs. Virus-mediated BMP-2 overexpression resulted in an increase in the number of glands formed. Moreover, ectopic expression of Noggin, which antagonizes the effect of BMPs, in the proventricular mesenchyme or epithelium, led to the complete inhibition of gland formation, indicating that BMP signals are necessary for the proventricular gland formation. These findings suggest that BMPs are of prime importance as mesenchymal signals for inducing proventricular glands.  相似文献

The anatomy and functionality of the stomatogastric nervous system (SNS) of third-instar larvae of Calliphora vicina was characterised. As in other insects, the Calliphora SNS consists of several peripheral ganglia involved in foregut movement regulation. The frontal ganglion gives rise to the frontal nerve and is connected to the brain via the frontal connectives and antennal nerves (ANs). The recurrent nerve connects the frontal- to the hypocerebral ganglion from which the proventricular nerve runs to the proventricular ganglion. Foregut movements include rhythmic contractions of the cibarial dilator muscles (CDM), wavelike movements of crop and oesophagus and contractions of the proventriculus. Transections of SNS nerves indicate mostly myogenic crop and oesophagus movements and suggest modulatory function of the associated nerves. Neural activity in the ANs, correlating with postsynaptic potentials on the CDM, demonstrates a motor pathway from the brain to CDM. Crop volume is monitored by putative stretch receptors. The respective sensory pathway includes the recurrent nerve and the proventricular nerve. The dorsal organs (DOs) are directly connected to the SNS. Mechanical stimulation of the DOs evokes sensory activity in the AN. This suggests the DOs can provide sensory input for temporal coordination of feeding behaviour.  相似文献

The morphology of the stomodeal nervous system of the adult dragon flies Bradinopyga geminata and Orthetrum chrysis is described. No gastric ganglion or ganglion ingluviale has been found. Instead the oesophageal nerve forks near the junction of the proventriculus and the midgut. The two nerves run on either side of the midline as ingluvial nerves and enter the proventricular ganglionic masses. These ganglionic masses are connected by a transverse nerve, which has been called as the nervus transversus proventriculare. Both bipolar and multipolar types of sensory cells have been found over the surface of the crop. These cell bodies appear to be interconnected by connective tissue. Dendrites of these cells terminate on the longitudinal muscle fibres, surrounding the proventriculus and the midgut. The proximal processes of these cells enter the proventricular ganglionic mass. In methylene blue whole mounts they resemble the stretch receptors, hence it is quite probable that they play some role in the peristaltic movement of the gut. The corpora cardiaca lie dorsal to the pharynx and are connected to the brain by two pairs of nerves, the nervi corporis cardiaci (NCC I, NCC II). Unlike in other insects, the nerve connecting the corpora cardiaca with the corpora allata is slender and arises as a branch of the nerve, nervus corporis allati II. The corpora alata are spherical to ovoid in shape and lie ventral to the nerve cord. Anteriorly they are attached to the inner wall of the hypopharynx and posteriorly to the subesophageal ganglion by a pair of nerves, the nervi corporis allati II.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The fine structure and function of a honey bee's ( Apis mellifera Linn.) proventriculus were studied by scanning electron microscopy and video-recording. Our observations revealed that the proventriculus is used to engulf pollen and other particles which contaminate the nectar carried into the crop. The four lips are closed and opened, pulled backwards and straightened by the external circular muscles and internal longitudinal muscles. Combs of filiform-hairs (70 μm in length) located on the margins of the lips 'catch' and filter particles from the fluid. By repeated filtering, opening and closing actions of the hairs and lips, particles are filtered and collected in pouches between the ventricular folds to form boluses and are eventually passed into the midgut. In the present experiment, particle sizes ranging from 0.5 to 100 μm in diameter, including dandelion pollen ( Taraxacum officinale Web.), Torula yeast ( Candida utilis Lodder et Kreger-Van Rij), bee disease spores of Nosema apis Zander and Bacillus larvae White, and man-made particles can be filtered by the hairs. Small particles (0.23 μm in diameter) filter through the hair and return back to the fluid. Large particles (100–200 μm in diameter) are caught between the stylets of the mouthparts and are not ingested. These observations suggest that the particle size plays an important role in determining what can be taken by the mouthparts and the proventriculus and what can later be utilized as a food source by the bee. The role of the proventriculus in disease transmission is also discussed.  相似文献

Under a “summer” light-temperature regime (LD 16:8, 20°C), the polychaete Typosyllis prolifera shows a spontaneous 30-day cycle of reproduction (stolonization). Previous experiments suggested cyclic reproduction to be controlled by corresponding changes in the inhibitory endocrine activity of the proventriculus. The evidence in this paper, however, indicates that the prostomium rather than the proventriculus is the primary source of control of reproductive periodicity. The prostomium of a “summer” male undergoes a spontaneous lunar cycle of hormonal activity. Hormone secretion occurs around day 13 after previous stolon release each time. The hormone probably operates a triggering mechanism that shifts worms from the postreproductive regeneration phase to the next stolonization phase. However, the action on peripheral targets may be indirectly via the proventricular system, the inhibitory activity of which probably becomes inactivated periodically under endocrine influence of the prostomium. Considering all the information available, a model of the cooperation of environmental factors and endocrine factors (prostomial and proventricular hormone) in the timing of the reproductive cycle in male T. prolifera is presented.  相似文献

Summary The avian stomach is subdivided into two parts, the proventriculus and the gizzard. It has been shown that the gizzard epithelium can express embryonic chick pepsinogen (ECPg) antigen, a marker protein of the proventricular epithelium, as well as normal proventricular epithelium, under the appropriate experimental conditions. To study the possible mechanisms involved in the suppression of ECPg synthesis in the gizzard epithelium during normal development, we carried out heterotypic and heterochronic recombination experiments of the epithelium and mesenchyme of these two organ rudiments. When recombined and cultured with 6-day proventricular mesenchyme, gizzard epithelium of 3.5- to 12-day embryos expressed pepsinogen at all stages tested. However, the ratio of ECPg-positive cells to total epithelial cells in the gizzard epithelium decreased rapidly when epithelium older than 7 days was cultured with proventricular mesenchyme. In contrast to proventricular mesenchyme, 6-day gizzard mesenchyme did not allow ECPg expression in associated proventricular epithelium of 3.5- to 7-day embryos. These results indicate that gizzard epithelium does not express pepsinogen in normal development because of both a decrease in ability to express the enzyme in itself in the course of development and a repressive influence of gizzard mesenchyme.  相似文献

The primitive epithelium of embryonic chicken proventriculus (glandular stomach) differentiates, after day 6 of incubation, into luminal epithelium, which faces the lumen and abundantly secretes mucus, and glandular epithelium, which invaginates into mesenchyme and later expresses embryonic chicken pepsinogen (ECPg). So far it is not well understood how undifferentiated epithelial cells differentiate into these two distinct cell populations. Spasmolytic polypeptide (SP) is known to be expressed in surface mucous cells of mammalian stomach. In order to obtain the differentiation marker for proventricular luminal epithelial cells, we cloned a cDNA encoding chicken SP ( cSP ). Sequence analysis indicated that cSP has the duplicated cysteine-rich domain characteristic of SP. Examination of the spatial and temporal expression pattern of cSP gene revealed that, during embryogenesis, cSP was expressed in luminal epithelial cells of the proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, and lung, but not the esophagus. In the proventriculus, cSP mRNA was first detected on day 8 of incubation and was localized to differentiated luminal epithelial cells. By using cSP as a molecular marker, the effects of mesenchyme on the differentiation of epithelium were analyzed in vitro . On the basis of these data, a model is presented concerning the differentiation of proventricular epithelium.  相似文献

Cryptosporidiosis in zoo and pet birds.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cryptosporidiosis is recognized as a primary disease in commercially raised chickens, turkeys, and bobwhite quail. Little is known about cryptosporidial infections in zoo and pet birds, although, infections of the small intestines, proventriculus, respiratory tract, and kidneys have been reported. In the present study, we reviewed cases of cryptosporidial infections in zoo and pet birds submitted to the State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Auburn, Alabama for necropsy or histopathologic examination. We identified infections in cockatiels, white-lored euphonias, bronze mannikin finches, and Australian diamond firetailed finches. Infections in the cockatiels occurred mostly in the small intestine, but parasites were also observed in the esophageal glands, air sacs, and proventriculus of some birds. Separate cases of small intestinal and proventricular infections were identified in the white-lored euphonias. Cryptosporidial parasites were found only in the proventriculus of the bronze mannikin finches and Australian diamond firetail finches. No cases of renal cryptosporidiosis were observed. Co-pathogens or other disease conditions were present in all birds. The Cryptosporidium species responsible for causing proventricular infection in zoo and pet birds may be different from C. meleagridis and C. baileyi.  相似文献

The endodermal epithelia of esophagus, proventriculus and gizzard of 6-day chicken embryos can form glands and express embryonic chicken pepsinogen (ECPg), when they are subjected to the influence of proventricular mesenchyme, while intestinal epithelium of the same age cannot respond to the inductive influence of proventricular mesenchyme. We attempted in this paper to know whether this regional difference of epithelia to respond to mesenchymal influence originates very early in development or it is established gradually in the course of development of digestive tract.
The young presumptive intestinal endoderm taken from embryos having 15–20 somites was associated and cultivated with 6-day proventricular mesenchyme. The presumptive intestinal endoderm never expressed ECPg although it formed gland-like structures. In the control explants composed of presumptive stomach endoderm and proventricular mesenchyme, glands were formed and gland cells expressed ECPg detected by immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization.
These results indicate that the developmental fate of presumptive intestinal endoderm is determined rather strictly at very early developmental stage, and suggest that the segregation of at least two cell lineages occurs early in the development; one which can express ECPg under the influence of proventricular mesenchyme, and another one which cannot express ECPg and differentiates mainly into intestinal epithelium.  相似文献

1. Distribution of FMRFamide-like peptide activity was examined in the stomatogastric nervous system of the adult fly, Sarcophaga bullata by the indirect immunofluorescent method.2. The neurons of the hypocerebral ganglion exhibit intense immunoreactivity and extend a thick axon bundle ventrally towards the proventriculus and crop.3. Near the mouth of the stomodeal valve a dense network of radial and circular immunoreactive processes branch off and innervate the proventriculus.4. Beyond the proventriculus, the crop duct and anterior midgut wall are also innervated by the FMRFamide-like immunoreactive processes of the nerve from the hypocerebral ganglion.5. From the pattern of innervation of the gut by FMRFamide-like immunoreactive processes it is suggested that this neuropeptide may regulate feeding activities in the adult fly.  相似文献

The anatomy and histology of the proventriculus in several species of petrels were examined and compared with the conditions in other birds.
The proventriculus in petrels is comparatively very large and its mucosa is raised into longitudinal ridges; it thus has a much greater surface area than in other birds. The presence of lipoids other than triglycerides concentrated in large quantities, particularly in the outer parts of the epithelial cells of the proventricular glands of petrels, is demonstrated. Lipoids in the corresponding cells in other birds are minute in quantity.
The probability that these lipoids represent the stomach oil, or its precursor, immediately before secretion, is discussed and compared with other theories about the origin of the oil. The observations provide strong evidence, but not absolute proof, that the oil originates in the cells of the proventricular glands.
Suggestions about the possible function of petrel stomach oil are discussed. The oil may supplement the secretion of the preen gland; it may be an excreted by-product of the metabolism of excessively fat foods; or it may play an important part in water metabolism, especially in the nestling. Without further work, none of these theories can be upheld or refuted, and it is possible that all are partly correct, for they are not mutually exclusive.
Many petrels shoot stomach oil from the beak when they are disturbed. The possible origin of this habit from the escape reaction, found in many birds, of vomiting up the stomach contents when alarmed, is pointed out.  相似文献

The stomatogastric nervous system (SNS) associated with the foregut was studied in 3rd instar larvae of Drosophila melanogaster and Calliphora vicina (blowfly). In both species, the foregut comprises pharynx, esophagus, and proventriculus. Only in Calliphora does the esophagus form a crop. The position of nerves and neurons was investigated with neuronal tracers in both species and GFP expression in Drosophila. The SNS is nearly identical in both species. Neurons are located in the proventricular and the hypocerebral ganglion (HCG), which are connected to each other by the proventricular nerve. Motor neurons for pharyngeal muscles are located in the brain not, as in other insect groups, in the frontal ganglion. The position of the frontal ganglion is taken by a nerve junction devoid of neurons. The junction is composed of four nerves: the frontal connectives that fuse with the antennal nerves (ANs), the frontal nerve innervating the cibarial dilator muscles and the recurrent nerve that innervates the esophagus and projects to the HCG. Differences in the SNS are restricted to a crop nerve only present in Calliphora and an esophageal ganglion that only exists in Drosophila. The ganglia of the dorsal organs give rise to the ANs, which project to the brain. The extensive conformity of the SNS of both species suggests functional parallels. Future electrophysiological studies of the motor circuits in the SNS of Drosophila will profit from parallel studies of the homologous but more accessible structures in Calliphora.  相似文献
