Virgin females of the white grub beetle, Dasylepida ishigakiensis Niijima et Kinoshita, emit the sex pheromone, 2-butanol. To investigate the relationships between pheromone emission and ovarian development in this beetle, virgin adult females were kept at 18°C for various lengths of time. The sex pheromone released by individual females at first calling was collected at 23°C and the amounts determined. Females started developing visible oocytes at day 44 and emitting sex pheromone at day 50. Almost all females at day 52 or later possessed eggs, indicating that diapause had ended. A high positive correlation was found between the amounts of pheromone emitted and levels of ovarian development. A large variation of pheromone emission was encountered even among individuals of the same age. Females retained the ability to emit sex pheromone as long as they were virgin. These results may provide important information regarding the timing and duration of application of synthetic sex pheromone in an attempt to control this pest through disrupting the male-female communication.  相似文献

Modifications of a domestic freezer are described, which convert it to a versatile controlled environment chamber capable of maintaining temperatures between ambient and - 18 °C and therefore useful in investigations both of plant growth at low positive temperatures and of survival of sub-zero temperatures. The temperature control mechanism can provide a wide range of diurnal temperature regimes and of cooling and warming rates. Measurements in two such chambers showed air temperatures were always uniform to within ° 1 °C of set temperature except in a 6 cm band round the inside walls, where they were lower by 0°6 °C, at most; CO2 concentration was always close to 300 v.p.m.; relative humidity was usually in the range 80–90% and photon flux densities during the light period were 180 ° 10 μmol m-2 s-1. The uniformity of environmental conditions within each chamber was confirmed by measurements of leaf growth and plant survival of tillers of a single genotype of perennial ryegrass growing in pots of compost. These tests also confirmed the lower temperature of the 6 cm band adjacent to the chamber walls. Although temperature settings were identical, air and compost temperatures were 0°3 °C higher in one of the two chambers tested. Although this difference did not result in significant differences in plant survival, significant differences in leaf lamina extension were found between cabinets. Problems encountered in the design and testing of the chambers are discussed.  相似文献

In the laboratory, blood feeding rates, oögenesis and fat body development were utilized to assess the effects of photoperiod and temperature in the conditioning of adult female Culiseta inornata for aestivation. Long-day (16L:8D) and short-day (8L:16D) photoperiods were examined in combination with temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, and 25°C. All tested individuals were reared from egg to adult under one of six possible regimes.Blood feeding occurred in approximately 60% of the females subjected to short-day conditions. Females subjected to long-day regimes exhibited gonotrophic concordance (the inhibition of blood feeding), evidenced by a decrease in overall blood-feeding rate to 20%. Inhibition of blood feeding by long-day females decreased in a linear fashion with increasing temperature. No interaction of the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon blood feeding was apparent. Examination of the ovarioles of post-blood feeding females, reared under each of the above conditions, revealed no evidence of gonotrophic dissociation (the inhibition of oögenesis despite continued blood feeding).Fat body hypertrophy occurred in females reared under long-day conditions, whereas hypotrophy of this tissue was apparent in short-day females. No significant difference in fat body development occurred between parous and nulliparous females reared under long-day photoperiod conditions. Short-day blood-fed females reared at 15°C deposited a significantly greater amount of fat than short-day blood fed females reared at 20° and 25°C, and short-day nonbloodfed females reared at 15°, 20°, and 25°C. The primary stimulus for fat body hypertrophy appears to be long-day photoperiod conditions. Temperature exerted little discernible effect upon this process, and there was no interaction between the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon the degree of fat body development.  相似文献

A chamber for the simulation of radiation freezing of plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Frost injury to plants can occur following episodic radiation frosts. In the UK this is particularly important to spring sown crops such as potatoes. Most laboratory based frost studies simulate freezing using either conductive or convective freezing chambers. Such frost tests do not simulate overnight freezing events adequately. A freezing chamber based on radiative cooling is described which mimics overnight radiative freezing. The chamber is rectangular in design (1 m × lm × 2 m high) with a radiative cooling plate at the top of the chamber cooled to -40°C to -45°C using HFC coolants, which acts as a cold black body. The sides of the chamber are also cooled to variable temperatures down to -5°C in order to prevent the chamber walls radiating to the plant material during testing. Using thermocouples to measure air temperature and plant temperature the chamber has been characterised to simulate the radiative cooling conditions found in the UK during autumn and spring. Exotherm detection upon plant freezing is simplified by virtue of the reduction in temperature fluctuation normally experienced at the plant surface during natural freezing. Radiation frosts and subsequent frost damage to potatoes have been recorded in the temperature range -4°C to –5°C. The equipment is recommended for studies of frost damage to plants normally caused by episodic radiation frost events.  相似文献

1 The feeding behaviour of Hylastes ater was investigated at 15 °C and 20 °C on a range of tree species. The role of an aggregation pheromone and the part played by olfactory cues in food selection was also investigated. 2 A distinct hierarchical preference at both 15 °C and 20 °C such that Pinus radiata > Pinus sylvestris > > Picea abies > > Rubus fruticosus=Betula pendula was shown. 3 Feeding on P. sylvestris led to the highest weight gain, closely followed by P. radiata and P. abies. Slightly elevated feeding was observed at 20 °C compared with 15 °C. 4 Reduced feeding in the presence of B. pendula suggests the possibility of an antifeedant effect and predamaged wood was found to be less nutritious, possibly due to greater plant defences. 5 The role of an aggregation pheromone was not supported. Olfactory cues enabled the detection of woody hosts, although differentiation between host was not observed. 6 These results are likely to be important in helping to design an effective integrated control approach against this pest.  相似文献

Egg maturation in Calliphora vicina is known to occur within a wide range of temperatures, from 12°C to nearly 30°C (Vinogradova, 1991). Photoperiodism has no effect on this process. Some females enter diapause already at 20°C; their fraction increases at lower temperatures and reaches 100% at 6°C. Reproducing females with eggs can survive for a long time and even lay eggs at low temperatures (4–5°C). Experiments with C. vicina from Leningrad Province revealed some effects of the diet (liver or fish) and temperature on the fly reproduction. At 20 and 25°C, 7–10-day old females begin to oviposit, but at 20°C egg maturation is observed in 98% of females feeding on liver and in only 5% of females feeding on fish. On the liver diet, the mean daily fecundity is significantly correlated with the day of oviposition but not with the temperature. At 20°C a significant correlation is observed between the mean daily fecundity and both the day of oviposition and food. The total number of eggs laid by flies after feeding on fish is half that produced after feeding on liver. The optimal conditions for Calliphora vicina cultivation are a 16-h light day, temperatures within the range from 20 to 25°C, and liver as food.  相似文献

The rate of pheromone emission from wild and laboratory-reared gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) virgin females was determined with an all-glass aeration apparatus. This device incorporated a bed of 1-mm glass beads to extract entrained pheromone from the air flowing over the protruded gland. The temporal pattern of emission was established by monitoring individual females after eclosion for 24 consecutive 2-hr intervals. At a constant 24°C, both wild and laboratory females exhibited a similar diel periodicity of pheromone emission. The mean release rate increased after onset of photophase, generally attained maximal levels between 1600 and 2200 hr and declined during scotophase. Pheromone was released continuously and the mean daily emission increased with age for both wild and laboratory moths. The mean emission rate over the 48-hr monitoring interval was 15.4 ng2 hr for wild females vs 14.7 ng2 hr for laboratory moths. The peak emission from 2-day-old laboratory moths was ca.28 ng2 hr compared with the ca.25 ng2 hr released by their wild counterparts. The calling periodicity of laboratory females was determined at a constant 24°C and under a natural temperature rhythm. At 24°C, the proportion of females calling exceeded 45% throughout the diel period, whereas under the temperature rhythm, calling was virtually eliminated by temperatures below 15°C, indicating that temperature acts as an exogenous cue to modify the expression of the calling rhythm and thus potentially the periodicity of pheromone emission.  相似文献

The zone of emission of the sex pheromone from the body of Culicoides nubeculosus was investigated. The amount of pheromone emitted was evaluated by counting the number of matings between males and females exposed to a flow of air coming from a chamber containing virgin females. The number of matings is higher than that recorded when the air flow comes from an empty chamber (control). Three parts of the body were examined: head, thorax and abdomen. Each part was studied by neutralizing the effect of the others. The head was neutralized by decapitation and the females continued to emit pheromone. The head is, therefore, not indispensible for pheromone emission. The roles of the thorax and abdomen were studied by coating these with paraffin wax. When the thorax is coated, pheromone emission continues, but when the abdomen is coated, it stops. It appears that the abdomen alone is responsible for emission of the sex pheromone.  相似文献

This paper describes the technical information and performance of a new multi-objective chamber system enabling the control of environmental variables (e.g., temperature, CO2, air humidity, wind speed, and UV-B radiation) for understanding plant responses to climate change. Over a whole growing season, four different climate scenarios were evenly programmed into the system’s 16 chambers as ambient environment (AMB), elevated temperature (ET), elevated CO2 concentration (EC) and elevated temperature and CO2 concentration (ETC). Simultaneously, the chamber effects were assessed regarding the physiological responses and growth of a boreal perennial grass (reed canary grass, Phalaris arundinacea L.). During the growing season, the chamber system provided a wide variety of climatic conditions for air temperature (T a), relative humidity (RH) and CO2 concentration (C a) in the AMB chambers following outside conditions. The target temperature (+3.5°C) was achieved to a good degree in the ET and ETC chambers, being on average 3.3°C and 3.7°C higher than ambient conditions, respectively. The target concentration of CO2 (700 ppm) was also well achieved in the EC and ETC chambers, being on average 704 ppm and 703 ppm, respectively. The stable airflow condition inside all of the chambers provided a homogeneous distribution of gases and temperature. The decreases in RH and increases in vapour pressure deficit (VPD) in the elevated temperature chambers were also maintained at a low level. Chamber effects were observed, with some physiological and growth parameters of plants being significantly lower in the AMB chambers, compared to outside conditions. The plant growth was negatively affected by the reduced radiation inside the chambers.  相似文献

Maclean, G. L. 1973. The Sociable Weaver, Part 2: Nest architecture and social organization. Ostrich 44:191-218.

Sociable Weavers build nest masses in a number of indigenous tree species (especially on Acacia giraffae branches) and on artificial nest sites like telephone poles. They never build in exotic trees. Nest masses are built of grass straws and roofed over with a superstructure of coarser material such as thorn twigs. The grass substructure contains the nest chambers which do not interconnect. The substructure may be divisible into two or more levels, each forming a social unit comprising the birds inhabiting it.

Each social level of birds is confined to its own structural level at all times, but a bird may roost in any chamber within its own level. The superstructure is not divisible into social units and any bird may build or perch on any part of the superstructure. Movements of birds from one colony to another are rare. The colony at one nest mass leaves the nest at about sunrise in summer, a little later in winter, and flies to the feeding grounds; the birds return to the nest mass for a siesta lasting from about 10:00 hours to 14:00 hours in hot weather, less than this in cool weather. They depart again for their feeding grounds until about sunset.

The internal temperature and RH of the nest chambers were not found to be significantly different from ambient temperature and RH when ambient temperatures were > 21,7°C. At ambient temperatures < 26,7°C the RH of the nest chambers was significantly lower than ambient Rh, but temperatures were not significantly different during the day.  相似文献

Temperature modified the expression of female calling in Platynota stultana. Absolute temperature levels and not necessarily a decrease in temperature appear to modulate the timing of calling by delimiting a specific time interval for calling at each temperature. Calling began earlier in the photoperiod at lower temperatures than at higher temperatures. As females aged they initiated calling at an earlier time. Pheromone production (at 24°C) was rhythmical with maximal titre being reached near to the onset of the calling period at 14°C and about 5 hr prior to the onset of calling at 24°C. Females thus appear to be capable of emitting pheromone at an appropriate rate any time during calling intervals delimited by temperatures between 14 and 24°C. Pheromone titre appears to reflect a time-dependent readiness to respond to a decrease in temperature.  相似文献

The effects of rearing and feeding conditions, as well as of body size and origin on sexual differentiation have been examined in elvers collected on the Atlantik coast (River Ems) and in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Raised at 17°, 20°, 23°, 26° or 29° C and at constant photoperiod, the elvers received either commercial fish food or cod roe. Eels from the Tyrrhenian Sea mostly developed into males. To some extent, at temperatures optimal for growth (26° C) and feeding a cod-roe diet, a shift of sex ratio in favour of females was observed in Atlantic eels. The results obtained contradict those ofFidora (1951), who, rearing elvers in ponds, found the percentage of male eels to be positively correlated with increasing stock density. Although in the present study, stock density was 200 times higher than inFidora's experiments, the percentage of females was much higher than that of males. The results obtained supportBellini's (1907) findings that big elvers preferentially develop into females, but small elvers into males. Irrespective of elvers' origin, water temperature and diet, the onset of sexual differentiation dependends upon attaining a certain body length (15–25 cm), but not on age. Whereas under natural conditions females are supposed to grow faster than males, under the conditions tested the males grew faster than the females. It is concluded, that, in addition to genetic factors, various environmental factors may influence sex determination in eels.  相似文献

Swarming by alates of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, occurs around dusk during April–June in Louisiana and adjoining states. Dispersal is the primary purpose for swarming. We studied the premating behavior, following swarming. Loss of wings, especially in females, was essential for successful formation of tandem pairs between the two sexes. No calling was observed and apparently a long-range volatile sex pheromone, reported in some other species of termites, may not be involved in mate attraction in C. formosanus. Males moving randomly use their antennae to detect a female, and, together with maxillary and labial palps, contact is maintained with her while in tandem. Previously mated males paired with virgin females showed tandem behavior. The incidence was very low when both males and females were previously mated and then paired. Males with complete ablation of antennae did not form tandem pairs. Ablation of 10 terminal antennal segments or the labial palps caused a significant increase in the time to initiate tandem behavior. Electrophysiological recordings from gustatory sensilla on both antennae and maxillary palps revealed increased neural activity in response to female abdominal tip extracts compared to activity elicited by a solvent control. Analysis of extracts of male and female abdominal tips using high-performance liquid chromatography showed a peak unique to the female extract. We discuss the presence of a nonvolatile chemical in female C. formosanus and its involvement in the specific premating behavior.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on the development and growth of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) have never been quantified. Therefore, to establish the effect of temperature on leaf appearance and canopy establishment of fibre hemp under controlled and field conditions, plants were grown in growth chambers at 11 regimes with average temperatures between 10°C and 28°C, and three cultivars were sown in the field in March, April and May in 1990, 1991 and 1992. In the field, thermal time (base 0°C) between sowing and emergence ranged from 68°Cd to 109.5°Cd (average 88.3°Cd). Rates of leaf appearance and stem elongation increased linearly with temperature between 10°C and 28°C. The base temperature for leaf appearance was 5.7°C from the growth chamber experiments and 1°C from the field experiments. In the field, the base temperature for the relationship between light interception by the canopy and thermal time was 2.5°C, and thermal time, calculated at the appropriate base temperature, accounted for about 98% of the variance in the number of leaves and for 98.6% of the variance in the proportion of light intercepted by the canopy. Days from emergence accounted for less of the variance in both parameters than thermal time. Interception of 90% of light was attained on average at 465°Cd (base 0°C) after emergence. It is concluded that thermal time is a simple and accurate tool to describe leaf appearance and light interception in fibre hemp.  相似文献

Eighteen oothecae of the African selenocosmiine spider Pterinochilus murinus were incubated at 22.5, 27.0, or 31.5°C. Neonates were reared under high or low feeding regimens. Potential influences of incubation temperature on incubation period, secondary sex ratio, egg inviability, embryo mortality, and juvenile mass at eclosion were examined using chi-square analysis and analysis of covariance. Potential direct and interactive effects of the temperature of incubation and feeding regimen on juvenile mortality, mass at 35 weeks, and duration of immature/mature life span and body mass/size in males were tested using multivariate analysis of covariance. Secondary sex ratio did not depart from parity within any experimental treatment. The strikingly small mass of spiders reared under the low feeding regimen was unaffected by incubation temperature and was equivalent between the sexes. Under the high feeding regimen, females in the 22.5 and 31.5°C incubation treatments had surpassed the mass of their male counterparts by week 35, but male and female mass was equivalent at 27.0°C. The most massive high-fed females were produced from the 31.5°C incubation temperature, while high-fed males were largest from 27.0°C, which also produced mature males of the greatest mass and body size. Captive-management implications are discussed. Zoo Biol 17:405–414, 1998.

Abstract. The effects of temperature on the development of early stages and the thermopreference of nymphs and adults were analysed in the haematophagous bug Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva, 1911 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae). Egg hatching, mortality of nymphs, feeding and moulting success of the early stages of T. brasiliensis were all affected by temperature. While high rates of egg hatching were observed between 25 and 27 °C, no hatching occurred at 12, 19 and 38 °C. The mortality of first‐instar nymphs was highest at 38 °C, at which no insects survived after 10 days of exposure. Feeding success was only affected at the lowest temperature (12 °C). No ecdysis was observed in the groups exposed to 12, 19 and 21 °C. Recently fed fourth‐instar nymphs preferred to stay at a temperature of approximately 30 °C. The preferred temperature began to decline gradually to approximately 27 °C during ecdysis, reaching 26 °C at 30 days after ecdysis. After a second blood meal, the insects' preferred temperature was again approximately 30 °C. The thermopreference pattern of females was similar to that of nymphs. Nymphs and females showed a daily fluctuation in their preferred temperature, moving towards higher values at the beginning of the dark phase, and choosing lower ones after this time interval, at which they remained until the end of the light phase. The females laid their eggs in all sectors of the arena, although the largest numbers of eggs were found between 28 and 32 °C.  相似文献

Codling moth female calling and male pheromone responsiveness under the defined conditions of 23°C and light:dark (LD) 16:8 occurred primarily during scotophase. Under either continuous photophase or scotophase females called with periodicities very similar to their periodicity under the LD cycle, indicating that the rhythmicity is circadian. Male response rhythmicity was maintained under continuous photophase. A decrease in the temperature from 23° to 16°C resulted in a reduction in the proportion calling when the decrease in temperature occurred during scotophase and a shift of maximal calling into photophase when the decrease in temperature occurred 3 hr prior to the initiation of scotophase. Decreases of temperature from 23° to 16°C and of light intensity did not produce similar shifts in the periodicity of male upwind orientation. Of 6 pheromone dosages from 10?5 to 102 μg, 10?1 and 100 μg elicited the most male upwind orientation.  相似文献

Three methods of short-term storage of the blowfly Calliphora vicina strains are considered based on the experimental study of 21 strains originating from different parts of the species range. The colony can be preserved as diapausing adults at 6° and darkness for 2–3 months or more, depending on the geographical origin of the population. During the first five days of adult life the flies should be kept at 12° and short day on a sugar diet, after which they should be transferred into a refrigerator. During artificial hibernation the flies also require periodic sugar feeding every 20 days (3–4 h at 20°C) to maintain their vital functions. The combination of temperatures of 20–23°C and a protein diet terminates reproductive diapause, and oviposition starts in 10–17 days. The fly strain may be preserved as reproductive females at 6°C and darkness with sugar feeding. Flies also require periodic sugar feeding at 20°C (3–4 hours). In this case the flies start laying eggs 2–3 days after being transferred to 20–23°C. The preservation of diapausing larvae is a more reliable method of prolonged strain storage. In this case the flies of maternal generation are maintained at 20–23°C on sugar and protein diet. The egg rafts laid during 5–6 hours are then transferred into 12°C and short day until hatchment. The hatched larvae should be immediately placed into a refrigerator (2–3 or 5–6°C), where they feed during 1–1.5 months and enter diapause. For strain restoration, the diapausing larvae should be transferred into 20–25°C, where they pupariate in 3–5 days and the flies emerge in nearly 10 days.  相似文献

The development and reproductive potential of an indigenous parasitoid, Aphelinus varipes (Förster), was studied at 15, 17, 20, 25, and 30 °C. Developmental durations decreased with increasing temperatures. The emergence rate was higher than 90 % at 15, 17, and 20 °C. Offspring sex ratios were 0.69, 0.54, and 0.70 at 17, 20, and 25 °C, respectively, but were 0.14 at 15 °C and 0.38 at 30 °C. Developmental zeros of females and males were calculated as 9.9 and 9.6 °C, respectively. The effective accumulative temperature (K) was 204.1 degree-days in both sexes. Fecundity peaked in early age after emergence, then gradually decreased in a fluctuating manner at 20 and 25 °C. Host feeding continued constantly during the life of female adults at two temperatures. Single female parasitoids produced 218.5 and 203.1 mummies at 20 and 25 °C, respectively, during their lifespans. Aphids killed by parasitoid host feeding numbered 79.1 at 20 °C and 63.8 at 25 °C. Longevities were 27.0 days at 20 °C and 20.6 days at 25 °C. Moreover, intrinsic rates of natural increase (r m) were estimated as 0.151 at 20 °C and 0.227 at 25 °C. We discuss the potential of A. varipes as biological control agents by comparing them with Aphidius colemani Viereck, which has been introduced to horticultural crops in greenhouses in Japan.  相似文献
