48 male shift workers in various industries volunteered to document circadian rhythms in sleeping and working, oral temperature, grip strength of both hands, peak expiratory flow and heart rate. All physiological variables were self-measured 4 to 5 times a day for 2 to 4 weeks. Individual time series were analyzed according to several statistical methods (power spectrum, cosinor, chi squares, ANOVA, correlation, etc.) in order to estimate rhythm parameters such as circadian period (tau) and amplitude (A), and to evaluate subgroup differences with regard to tolerance to shift work, age, duration of shift work, speed of rotation and type of industry. The present study confirms for oral temperature and extends to other variables (grip strength of both hands, heart rate) that intolerance to shift work is frequently associated with both internal desynchronization and small circadian amplitude. The internal desynchronization among several circadian rhythms supports the hypothesis that these latter are driven by several oscillators. Many differences were observed between circadian rhythms in right and left hand grip strength: circadian tau in oral temperature was correlated with that in the grip strength of the dominant hand but not with that of the other hand; changes in tau s of the non-dominant hand were age-related but did not correlate with temperature tau; only the circadian A of the non-dominant hand was associated with a desynchronization. Thus, circadian rhythms in oral temperature and dominant hand grip strength may be driven by the same oscillator while that of the non-dominant hand may be governed by a different one. Internal desynchronization between both hand grip rhythms as well as desynchronization of performance rhythms reported by others provide indirect evidence that circadian oscillator(s) may be located in the human cerebral cortex.  相似文献

Internal desynchronization of circadian rhythms and tolerance of shift work   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fifteen male subjects including 12 shift workers (oil refinery operators) volunteered to document circadian rhythms in sleep-wake, grip strength of both hands, peak expiratory flow, heart rate, self-rated drowsiness, fatigue and attention. Each of these variables was measured 4 to 6 times/day for 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, both axillary temperature (with a shielded probe) and wrist activity were almost continuously recorded at 15 min intervals during the same time span. Individual time series were analyzed according to several statistical methods (power spectrum, cosinor, chi 2, etc.), in order to estimate the prominent circadian period tau and to evaluate both individual and subgroup differences with regard to tolerance of shift work, age, duration of shift work. The present study confirms for continuously recorded temperature and wrist activity, grip strength of both hands, heart rate and peak expiratory flow that intolerance of shift work is frequently associated with an internal desynchronization. However, this conclusion cannot be extended to circadian rhythms in self-rated drowsiness, fatigue and attention. The internal desynchronization among several circadian rhythms supports the hypothesis that these latter are driven by several oscillators, with presumable differences between right and left hemispheres as suggested by unequal values of tau in rhythms of both hand grip strength. Since an internal desynchronization can be observed in tolerant shift workers having no complaint, it is likely that symptoms of intolerance are related to the subject's sensitivity to internal desynchronization rather than to the desynchronization itself.  相似文献

Endogenous ultradian rhythms with a periodicity of 2-3 hours operate separately in the right and left hemispheres of the human brain and modulate physiological functions, perception and cognition. Since sensory pathways from either hand terminate in the contralateral hemisphere, ultradian rhythms of the right and left brain can be monitored by variations in the tactile discrimination of the left and right hand, respectively. Thirteen right-handed German males were tested every 15 minutes for 8 hours. Time series of the tactile error rate determined for the right and left hands oscillate with significantly different ultradian periodicities. Whereas cycles in tactile discrimination of the right hand (left hemisphere) have a periodicity of about 2 hours, tactile discrimination of the left hand (right hemisphere) is modulated by longer periods of about 3 hours. This is interpreted in terms of the overall functional asymmetry of the human brain. Since the left brain is the specialized locus for verbal processing and the right brain for visual-spatial processing, lateralized ultradian rhythms operating in the hemispheres may provide a distinct frame for long-term timing of neuronal processes underlying semantic and spatial mapping of the environment. This is particularly important for interpreting biosocial behavioural rhythms seen in humans living under natural conditions.  相似文献

Lateralized ultradian rhythms oscillating separately in the right and left hemispheres of the human brain can be monitored by variations in the tactile discrimination of either hand. A previous study in male German subjects has shown that the tactile error rates determined for the right and left hands oscillate with significantly different periodicities. In the present study, a group of Kenyan Maasai shepherds was tested while the subjects were leading herds on daily feeding routes. The Maasai exhibit considerable ultradian rhythms of about 2 hours in tactile error rates of either hand, but in contrast to the German subjects there is no significant difference between the right and left side. While an individual is en route, his hemispheres proceed through alternating states in matching segments of the path. Ultradian rhythms thus 'scan' not only the time of day but also the space, and might provide an intrinsic time-frame for neuronal processes of cognitive mapping.  相似文献

Most species living in temperate zones adapt their physiology and behavior to seasonal changes in the environment by using the photoperiod as a primary cue. The mechanisms underlying photoperiodic regulation of stress-related functions are not well understood. In this study, we analyzed the effects of photoperiod on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in photoperiod-sensitive Fischer 344 rats. We first examined how photoperiod affects diurnal variations in plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone. ACTH levels did not exhibit diurnal variations under long- and short-day conditions. On the other hand, corticosterone levels exhibited a clear rhythm under short-day condition with a peak during dark phase. This peak was not observed under long-day condition in which a significant rhythm was not detected. To analyze the mechanisms responsible for the photoperiodic regulation of corticosterone rhythms, ACTH was intraperitoneally injected at the onset of the light or dark phase in dexamethasone-treated rats maintained under long- and short-day conditions. ACTH induced higher corticosterone levels in rats examined at dark onset under short-day condition than those maintained under long-day condition. Next, we asked whether melatonin signals are involved in photoperiodic regulation of corticosterone rhythms, and rats were intraperitoneally injected with melatonin at late afternoon under long-day condition for 3 weeks. However, melatonin injections did not affect the corticosterone rhythms. In addition, photoperiodic changes in the amplitude of corticosterone rhythms were also observed in melatonin-deficient C57BL/6J mice, in which expression profiles of several clock genes and steroidgenesis genes in adrenal gland were modified by the photoperiod. Our data suggest that photoperiod regulates corticosterone rhythms by altered adrenal sensitivity through melatonin-independent mechanisms that may involve the adrenal clock.  相似文献

The response of an excitable cell to periodic electrical stimulation is modeled using the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) system submitted to a gaussian-shaped pacing, the width of which is small compared with the action potential duration. The influence of the amplitude and the period of the stimulation is studied using numerical continuation and bifurcation techniques (AUTO97 software). Results are discussed in the light of prior experimental and theoretical findings. In particular, agreement with the documented behavior of periodically stimulated cardiac cells and squid axons is discussed. As previously reported, we find many different "M:N" periodic solutions, period-doubling sequences leading to seemingly chaotic regimes, and bistability phenomena. In addition, the use of continuation techniques has allowed us to track unstable solutions of the system and thus to determine how the different stable rhythms are connected with each other in a bifurcation diagram. Depending on the stimulus amplitude, the aspect of the bifurcation diagram with the stimulus period as main varying parameter can vary from very simple to very complex. In its most developed structure, this bifurcation diagram consists of a main "tree" of period-2(P) branches, where the 1:1, 1:0, 2:2, 2:1,... rhythms are located, and of several closed loops made up of period-{N x 2(P)} branches (N>2), isolated from each other and from the main tree. It is mainly on such loops that N:1 rhythms (N>2) on one hand, and N:N-1 or Wenckebach rhythms (N>2) on the other hand, are located. Stable M:N and M:N-1 rhythms (M>or=N) can be found on the same branch of solutions. They are separated by a region of unstable solutions at small stimulus amplitudes, but this region shrinks gradually as the stimulus amplitude is raised, until it finally disappears. We believe that this property is related to the excitability characteristics of the FHN system. It would be interesting to know if it has any correspondence in the behavior of real excitable cells.  相似文献

In order to investigate the circadian oscillatory system, the present study performed simultaneous and continuous recordings of brain and intraperitoneal temperatures, drinking and locomotion in rats under light-dark (LD) cycles and continuous dim illumination (dim LL) for a total period of 16 days. Compared to circadian amplitudes under LD, those under dim LL were significantly reduced by 34% for drinking and 50% for locomotion, but were not for brain and intraperitoneal temperatures. On the other hand, means of steady circadian periods during last 10 days under dim LL were all within a close range between 24.2 and 24.3 h in these rhythms. Besides the steady periods, one rat exhibited weak circadian period of 23.7 and 24.6 h, but these multiple frequencies were also equally observed in the four rhythms. The similarity in the periodicities suggests that these temperature and activity rhythms might be driven by a common oscillatory system. Therefore differential reductions in the amplitudes of drinking and loc omotor rhythms might be caused by a masking effect of dim LL on their rhythm output-pathways. Hence rats may temporally coordinate various physiological and behavioral functions by such clock system under time cue free environment.  相似文献

The plant maintains a 24‐h circadian cycle that controls the sequential activation of many physiological and developmental functions. There is empirical evidence suggesting that two types of circadian rhythms exist. Some plant rhythms appear to be set by the light transition at dawn, and are calibrated to circadian (zeitgeber) time, which is measured from sunrise. Other rhythms are set by both dawn and dusk, and are calibrated to solar time that is measured from mid‐day. Rhythms on circadian timing shift seasonally in tandem with the timing of dawn that occurs earlier in summer and later in winter. On the other hand, rhythms set to solar time are maintained independently of the season, the timing of noon being constant year‐round. Various rhythms that run in‐phase and out‐of‐phase with one another seasonally may provide a means to time and induce seasonal events such as flowering.  相似文献

The two main aims of the study were to compare the dominant and non-dominant hand with regard to circadian rhythms of accuracy of performance at a task that required eye-hand coordination and sub-maximum muscle contraction, as well as to investigate if there were differences between the dominant and non-dominant hands in the associations between circadian rhythms of performance and core temperature and time awake. The task consisted of using a larger counter to flick a set of 20 smaller counters to land as near as possible to the center of a target. The nearer to the center of the target a counter landed, the higher the score awarded. Three measures of accuracy were calculated: the total score, the number of times the counter missed the target altogether, and the mean score for those counters that hit the target. Seventy-eight healthy participants performed the task at each of six test sessions distributed every 4 h throughout the day (at 08:00, 12:00... . 04:00 h), the participants then having been awake for about 1, 4... . 20 h, respectively. Before each test session, sub-lingual temperature (an estimate of core temperature) was measured, and estimates of the individual's alertness and fatigue were obtained. Temperature, alertness, and fatigue all showed circadian rhythms that were phased conventionally. Measures of accuracy of performance also showed significant circadian rhythms that were phased closer to the rhythms of alertness and fatigue than to that of oral temperature. In addition, and in support of our previous work, there were significant associations between performance and temperature (positive) and time awake (negative) for most measures of accuracy. Even though circadian rhythms of performance accuracy and effects of oral temperature and time awake were generally very similar between the dominant and non-dominant hand, there was a suggestion that time awake affected some aspects of performance of the non-dominant hand to a greater extent. There was little evidence to support the view that the 24-h rhythmicity was less marked in the non-dominant hand, which argues against internal desynchronization, at least for the task used in this study.  相似文献

During a 7-10 day span, circadian rhythms of sleep-wake, self-rated fatigue and mood, oral temperature, eye-hand skill and right and left hand grip strength were investigated in eight subjects: five males (21-28 years of age), members of the French sabre fencing team selected for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and three females (19-26 years of age) practicing fleuret (foil) fencing as a sports activity. On the average six measurements/day/variable/subject were performed. The single cosinor method showed that a circadian rhythm was detectable for only 26 out of the 56 time series (46.4%). Power spectrum analysis gave almost the same figure (19 out of 48: 39.5%) with regard to rhythms with τ=24hr indicating that with one exception (subject JFL) rhythms were internally desynchronized including differences τ between right and left hand grip strength rhythms for three subjects. Results suggest: (a) a physiologic synchronization of circadian rhythms may be a predictor of good performance; (b) however, internal desynchronization as shown previously may be a trivial phenomenon and thus does not imply in itself alterations of either health or performance; (c) chronobiologic methods should be recommended for a better understanding of changes in performance by those participating in competitive and other sports.  相似文献

Seasonally-breeding deer living in cool temperate environments exhibit pronounced seasonal rhythms of voluntary food intake, growth rate and fattening and the growth and development of the coat. All of these rhythms are considered to be entrained by photoperiod and melatonin, although so far this has only been demonstrated to be the case in one species, the red deer. This paper reviewed current data on seasonal rhythms in several species of deer. A comparison of two species with different breeding seasons, the red deer and the Pere David's deer, indicated that seasonal reproduction, appetite and coat growth rhythms are linked and may be controlled by a single circannual rhythm generator. All of these seasonal rhythms should be considered as adaptive for species living in cool temperate environments with marked fluctuations in food supply and climatic conditions.  相似文献

The effect of aspartame on circadian rhythms of calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels was studied in rats. Acrophase delays in calcium rhythms and advances in inorganic phosphorus rhythms and alteration in mesor values in both rhythms were observed in aspartame-treated rats. However, no change in amplitude values was observed. Oral administration of aspartame leads to increased levels of aspartate in the brain, which could alter the characteristics of calcium and inorganic phosphorus rhythms, possibly by modulating transmission in several areas/nuclei in brain, including retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) and suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN).  相似文献

We present a model for the generation of precise, long term rhythms from a collection of imprecise, short term oscillators. The model uses variability between oscillators in conjunction with simple coupling rules to produce long term rhythms that are independent of rate equations (e.g. Arrhenius). The rhythms generated by the model are controlled by only two independent parameters and exhibit several physiologically interesting properties, including ready entrainment to external signals and splitting in response to strong constant signals. The model provides several predictions that can be tested in future experiments.  相似文献

Changes in the heart basic rhythm, its rhythmical variations on periodograms, and level of spontaneous motor activity were studied on offspring of white rats from newborn to 3-week age at transition from the state of active wakefulness to narcosis as well as under conditions of blockade of M-cholinoreceptors with atropine. It is shown that the endogenous rhythmical activity can be regulated not only by a change in frequency of basic rhythms, but also by action on all parameters and properties of their rhythmical variations and secondary rhythms. The changes in power of the heart secondary rhythms exceed considerably the frequency oscillations of basic rhythms during blockade of cholinergic innervation or a change in the motor activity level that affects both the basic rhythm circulation and respiration and their variations—secondary rhythms. The atropine blockade of M-cholinoreceptors at the studied ages changes the heart contraction rhythm within the limits of 10% of bradycardia in newborns to tachycardia in the 3-week old animals. At the same time, power of the cardiac rhythm secondary oscillations changes several times. These data indicate that the cholinergic mechanisms play the key role in formation of the secondary rhythms and their correlation with motor activity.  相似文献

Chronobiology in hematology and immunology   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The hematopoietic and the immune systems in all their components are characterized by a multifrequency time structure with prominent rhythms in cell proliferation and cell function in the circadian, infradian, and rhythms in cell proliferation and cell function in the circadian, infradian, and circannual frequency ranges. The circulating formed elements in the peripheral blood show highly reproducible circadian rhythms. The timing and the extent of these rhythms were established in a clinically healthy human population and are shown as chronograms, cosinor summaries and, for some high-amplitude rhythms, as time-qualified reference ranges (chronodesms). Not only the number but also the reactivity of circulating blood cells varies predictably as a function of time as shown for the circadian rhythm in responsiveness of human and murine lymphocytes in vitro to lectin mitogens (phytohemagglutinin and pokeweed mitogen). Some circadian rhythms of hematologic functions appear to be innate and are presumably genetically determined but are modulated and adjusted in their timing by environmental factors, so-called synchronizers. Phase alterations in the circadian rhythms of hematologic parameters of human subjects and of mice by manipulation of the activity-rest or light-dark schedule and/or of the time of food uptake are presented. Characteristically these functions do not change their timing immediately after a shift in synchronizer phase but adapt over several and in some instances over many transient cycles. The circadian rhythm of cell proliferation in the mammalian bone marrow and lymphoid system as shown in mice in vivo and in vitro may lend itself to timed treatment with cell-cycle-specific and nonspecific agents in an attempt to maximize the desired and to minimize the undesired treatment effects upon the marrow. Differences in response, and susceptibility of cells and tissues at different stages of their circadian and circaseptan (about 7-day) rhythms and presumably of cyclic variations in other frequencies are expected to lead to the development of a chronopharmacology of the hematopoietic and immune system. Infradian rhythms of several frequencies have been described for numerous hematologic and immune functions. Some of these, i.e., in the circaseptan frequency range, seem to be of importance for humoral and for cell mediated immune functions including allograft rejection. Infradian rhythms with periods of 19 to 22 days seem to occur in some hematologic functions and are very prominent in cyclic neutropenia and (with shorter periods) in its animal model, the grey collie syndrome.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Melatonin administration to blind people: phase advances and entrainment.   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The purpose of this study was to test the phase-shifting and entraining effects of melatonin in human subjects. Five totally blind men were found in a previous study to have free-running endogenous melatonin rhythms. Their rhythms were remarkably stable, so that any deviation from the predicted phase was readily detectable. After determination of their free-running period and phase, they were given exogenous melatonin (5 mg) at bedtime (2200 hr) for 3 weeks, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The effects on the endogenous melatonin rhythm were assessed at intervals ranging from several days to 2 weeks. Exogenous administration of melatonin phase-advanced their endogenous melatonin rhythms. In three of the subjects, cortisol was shown to be phase-shifted in tandem with the melatonin rhythm. A sixth subject [one of the coauthors (JS)] was previously found to have free-running cortisol and temperature rhythms and was plagued by recurrent insomnia and daytime sleepiness. He had tried unsuccessfully to entrain his rhythms for over 10 years. After he took melatonin (7 mg at 2100 hr), his insomnia and sleepiness resolved. Determination of his endogenous melatonin rhythm after about a year of treatment demonstrated endogenous rhythms that appeared normally entrained. The treatment of blind people with free-running rhythms has many advantages for demonstrating chronobiological effects of hormones or drugs.  相似文献
