The evolution of female mate choice by sexual conflict   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
Although empirical evidence has shown that many male traits have evolved via sexual selection by female mate choice, our understanding of the adaptive value of female mating preferences is still very incomplete. It has recently been suggested that female mate choice may result from females evolving resistance rather than attraction to males, but this has been disputed. Here, we develop a quantitative genetic model showing that sexual conflict over mating indeed results in the joint evolution of costly female mate choice and exaggerated male traits under a wide range of circumstances. In contrast to tradition explanations of costly female mate choice, which rely on indirect genetic benefits, our model shows that mate choice can be generated as a side-effect of females evolving to reduce the direct costs of mating.  相似文献

In poeciliid fishes, males can gain copulation either by courtingfemales or through sexual coercion. In some species these twotactics coexist. However, in about half of the poeciliids,males do not display, females never cooperate during copulationand all matings are achieved by thrusting the intromittentorgan toward the genital pore of apparently unaware females.In one of these species, the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusiaholbrooki), the probability of insemination is influenced bythe time females are previously deprived of males, suggestingthat females exert some control over the occurrence of matingeven in a system apparently dominated by sexual coercion. Inthe present study we investigated the tendency of female mosquitofishto approach males in relation to their reproductive status and the time they were previously deprived of males. The tendencyto approach males increased in females that were previouslydeprived of males and in females that had recently given birth.When allowed to choose between males, male-deprived femalespreferred larger males and normally pigmented over melanisticmales. Females preferred groups of three males over a singlemale, whereas the preference for three males over a group ofone male and two females was only marginally significant. Collectively,these results suggest that, even when coercive mating is theonly tactic adopted by males, females may be able to influencethe outcome of these attempts, and thus exert some controlover the paternity of their offspring.  相似文献

Human mate choice is central to individuals' lives and to the evolution of the species, but the basis of variation in mate choice is not well understood. Here we looked at a large community-based sample of twins and their partners and parents ([Formula: see text] individuals) to test for genetic and family environmental influences on mate choice, while controlling for and not controlling for the effects of assortative mating. Key traits were analyzed, including height, body mass index, age, education, income, personality, social attitudes, and religiosity. This revealed near-zero genetic influences on male and female mate choice over all traits and no significant genetic influences on mate choice for any specific trait. A significant family environmental influence was found for the age and income of females' mate choices, possibly reflecting parental influence over mating decisions. We also tested for evidence of sexual imprinting, where individuals acquire mate-choice criteria during development by using their opposite-sex parent as the template of a desirable mate; there was no such effect for any trait. The main discernible pattern of mate choice was assortative mating; we found that partner similarity was due to initial choice rather than convergence and also at least in part to phenotypic matching.  相似文献

Mating preferences for genetic compatibility strictly depend on the interplay of the genotypes of potential partners and are therein fundamentally different from directional preferences for ornamental secondary sexual traits. Thus, the most compatible partner is on average not the one with most pronounced ornaments and vice versa. Hence, mating preferences may often conflict. Here, we present a solution to this problem while investigating the interplay of mating preferences for relatedness (a compatibility criterion) and large body size (an ornamental or quality trait). In previous experiments, both sexes of Pelvicachromis taeniatus, a cichlid fish with mutual mate choice, showed preferences for kin and large partners when these criteria were tested separately. In the present study, test fish were given a conflicting choice between two potential mating partners differing in relatedness as well as in body size in such a way that preferences for both criteria could not simultaneously be satisfied. We show that a sex-specific trade-off occurs between mating preferences for body size and relatedness. For females, relatedness gained greater importance than body size, whereas the opposite was true for males. We discuss the potential role of the interplay between mating preferences for relatedness and body size for the evolution of inbreeding preference.  相似文献

1. Mutual mate choice may be rare, occurring when both sexes invest heavily in reproduction, mating opportunities are abundant, and individuals differ in quality. 2. Mountain pine beetles, Dendroctonus ponderosae (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) appear to meet the conditions for mutual mate choice. We introduced males to females in breeding sites and observed the occurrence and speed of a male entering a female's gallery. We tested for consequences of mutual mate choice, namely condition‐dependent choosiness and assortative mating. 3. Males were more likely to enter a female's gallery when the gallery was in a smaller tree with less resin production and when the gallery was larger. Female body size and condition did not influence the probability of entry. Larger males were less likely to enter a gallery than were smaller males, probably because of size‐dependent choosiness rather than physical limitations. 4. Small males took longer to enter galleries of large females than of small females, whereas large males entered as quickly into galleries of large females as small females. This suggests size‐dependent choosiness by females. 5. No assortative mating by body size was detected, probably because males appeared to choose on the basis of female‐associated resources rather than on female traits.  相似文献

The general hypothesis of mate choice based on non-additive genetic traits suggests that individuals would gain important benefits by choosing genetically dissimilar mates (compatible mate hypothesis) and/or more heterozygous mates (heterozygous mate hypothesis). In this study, we test these hypotheses in a socially monogamous bird, the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus). We found no evidence for a relatedness-based mating pattern, but heterozygosity was positively correlated between social mates, suggesting that blue tits may base their mating preferences on partner''s heterozygosity. We found evidence that the observed heterozygosity-based assortative mating could be maintained by both direct and indirect benefits. Heterozygosity reflected individual quality in both sexes: egg production and quality increased with female heterozygosity while more heterozygous males showed higher feeding rates during the brood-rearing period. Further, estimated offspring heterozygosity correlated with both paternal and maternal heterozygosity, suggesting that mating with heterozygous individuals can increase offspring genetic quality. Finally, plumage crown coloration was associated with male heterozygosity, and this could explain unanimous mate preferences for highly heterozygous and more ornamented individuals. Overall, this study suggests that non-additive genetic traits may play an important role in the evolution of mating preferences and offers empirical support to the resolution of the lek paradox from the perspective of the heterozygous mate hypothesis.  相似文献

In this issue, Yeh et al. (2018) investigated whether sexual imprinting could act as an assortative mating mechanism, reducing hybridization and increasing premating isolation. While they indeed find that imprinting leads to assortative mating and reduced hybridization, the strength at which imprinting evolves is usually intermediate, because it is counterbalanced by the costs of imprinting and the benefits of adaptive hybridization. Thus, while sexual imprinting can act as an assortative mating mechanism, it is often not the sole element of female mate choice.  相似文献

The males of lekking species are not expected to be choosy about mating because a reduced reproductive rate due to lost mating opportunities should outweigh any benefits of male choice. Females have traditionally not been expected to be competitive in this system since their reproduction has usually been assumed to be unconstrained by male availability. Here we show that, in contrast to these predictions, males are choosy and females may be competitive in the lekking great snipe Gallinago media. Males preferred by many females often refused to copulate with and even chased away females that the male had already copulated with, whereas females seemed to compete for repeated copulations. We conclude that choosiness may sometimes pay for popular males in those lekking species where females copulate repeatedly. Apparently, evolutionary conflicts of interest between individuals may cause a richer repertoire of behavioural adaptations than, to our knowledge, hitherto realized.  相似文献

In literature-based meta-analyses of time-to-event data, the number of events in the treated and control groups together with the total number of patients randomized to the two treatment arms are often used as summary statistics. If interest is in mortality at a specified moment in time, the number of events can, in most cases, only be obtained from the Kaplan-Meier curve. The estimated number of events, however, is typically larger than the true number of events. The effect of this overestimation on the Mantel-Haenszel test and the odds ratio is studied in this paper. From these results, it can be concluded that the number of events should not be estimated from the Kaplan-Meier curves for meta-analytic purposes unless virtually no patients are lost to follow-up or censored and there are still many patients at risk in the two groups at the time at which the number of events is to be determined.  相似文献

Filial cannibalism (the consumption of one's own viable offspring) is common among fish with paternal care. In this study, I use a computer simulation to study simultaneous evolution of male filial cannibalism and female mate choice. Under certain conditions, selection on parental males favors filial cannibalism. When filial cannibalism increases a male's probability to raise the current brood successfully, filial cannibalism also benefits the female. However, when egg eating is a male investment into future reproduction, a conflict between female and male interests emerges. Here I investigate how female discrimination against filial cannibals affects evolution of filial cannibalism and how different female choice criteria perform against filial cannibalism. The introduction of discriminating females makes the fixation of filial cannibalism less likely. I introduced three different female choice criteria: (1) females who could discern a male's genotype, that is, whether the male was going to eat eggs as an investment in future reproductive events; (2) energy-choosing females that preferred to mate with males who had enough energy reserves to live through the current brood cycle without consuming eggs; and (3) females that preferred to mate with already mated males, that is, males with eggs in their nest. Genotype choice never coexisted with filial cannibals at fixation and filial cannibals were unable to invade a population with genotype-choosing females. Energy choice was successful only when males had high energy reserves and were less dependent on filial cannibalism as an alternative energy source. The egg choosers frequently coexisted with the cannibals at fixation. When the female strategies were entered simultaneously, the most frequent outcome for low mate sampling costs was that both the cannibals and the egg choice was fixed and all other strategies went extinct. These results suggest that sexual conflicts may not always evolve toward a resolution of the conflict, but sometimes the stable state retains the conflict. In the present case, this was because the egg-preference strategy had a higher fitness than the other female strategies. The outcome of this simulation is similar to empirical findings. In fish with paternal care, male filial cannibalism and female preference for mates with eggs commonly co-occur.  相似文献

While other investigations have described benefits of positive assortative mating (PAM) for forest tree breeding, the allocation of resources among mates in these studies was either equal or varied, using schemes corresponding only to parental rank (i.e., more resources invested in higher-ranking parents). In this simulation study, family sizes were proportional to predicted midparent BLUP values. The distribution of midparent BLUP values was standardized by a constant, which was varied to study the range of distributions of family size. Redistributing progenies from lower- to higher-ranking families to a point where an equal number of progenies were still selected out of each family to the next generation caused minimal change in group coancestry and inbreeding in the breeding population (BP), while the additive genetic response and variance in the BP were both greatly enhanced. This generated additional genetic gains for forest plantations by selecting more superior genotypes from the BP (compared to PAM with equal family sizes) for production of improved regeneration materials. These conclusions were verified for a range of heritability under a polygenic model and under a mixed-inheritance model with a QTL contributing to the trait variation.  相似文献

We conducted three experiments to test the effects of mating history of both sexes and of male body size on mating behaviours in the water strider, Gerris buenoi. Our manipulations influenced the interests of both sexes and, thus, the degree of conflict over mating behaviours. Mating history was a dichotomous variable (deprived/mated), depending on holding conditions in the laboratory. Experiment 1 considered and found independent effects of male and female mating history on latency to copulation and copulation duration. In experiment 2, we manipulated only female mating history, using unsuccessful struggle rates as evidence for female reluctance and conflict over mating. Finally, we investigated the relation between male body size and mating history on copulation duration. We predicted that intersexual conflict over mating would be lowest when females were deprived, because female interests under these conditions should more closely match those of males. Deprived females began mating in half the time of mated females and were twice as likely to mate because of reduced reluctance. Furthermore, copulation duration for deprived males was about one and a half times longer than that for mated males. Although previous studies examining nonrandom mating patterns by size predicted longer copulations for small males, we found that small males prolonged copulation when deprived more than large males. We conclude that females primarily influence copulation frequency, but males primarily influence copulation duration. Our results favour the hypothesis that reduced mating opportunity for small males accounts for their extended copulation duration. Finally, our findings provide evidence for strong effects of male body size on selection mechanisms in water striders, and support the hypothesis of conflicting pre- and postcopulatory selection mechanisms in this group. Field and laboratory studies were used to assess: (1) whether size assortative mating occurred in the New Zealand amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis and (2) hypotheses developed to explain size assortative mating. We found that assortative mating occurred and that larger females carried more eggs, suggesting they may be more valuable as mates. Laboratory experiments were then used to determine whether: (1) male size influenced the size of the female selected (mechanical constraints hypothesis); (2) male size influenced pairing success in the presence of competition (intrasexual selection hypothesis); (3) take‐overs of females occurred and whether large males were more successful (intrasexual selection hypothesis); (4) guard duration varied relative to male and female size (guard duration hypothesis); and (5) females had control over pairing success and guard duration (intersexual selection hypothesis). Although there was evidence to suggest the existence of intrasexual competition for mates (i.e. both small and large males preferred large females), there was no evidence of overt competition (i.e. takeovers of paired females). There was also no difference with respect to how long small and large males guarded females, but large females were guarded longer by both male size classes. Females handicapped by having their mobility reduced were guarded for the same duration as control females but males were more likely to pair with handicapped females, suggesting that they were easier to amplex. Given the lack of evidence for direct male–male competition or female choice, we suggest that assortative mating may be the result of: (1) indirect competition (e.g. in situ large males may be better able to access and amplex the largest females) or (2) female resistance to small males in combination with higher costs that small males may incur in securing large females. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 173–181.  相似文献

Male mate choice is critical for understanding the evolution and maintenance of sexual/asexual mating complexes involving sperm-dependent, gynogenetic species. Amazon mollies (Poecilia formosa) require sperm to trigger embryogenesis, but the males (e.g. Poecilia mexicana) do not contribute genes. Males benefit from mating with Amazon mollies, because such matings make males more attractive to conspecific females, but they might control the cost of such matings by providing less sperm to Amazon mollies. We examined this at the behavioural and sperm levels. P. mexicana males preferred to mate with, and transferred more sperm to conspecific females. However, if males mated with P. formosa, sperm was readily transferred. This underscores the importance of male choice in this system.  相似文献

Abstract In this study we test theoretical models of female mate choice tactics in natural populations of pine engravers, Ips pini (Say) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), a species with a resource-based mating system and high search costs. We first develop distinguishing predictions for each of four models of mate choice: random, comparison tactics, and fixed and adjustable thresholds. These predictions relate to commonly collected field data that include the visiting behavior of females and the quality of accepted and rejected mates. Using these types of data, we conclude that pine engravers use an adjustable threshold mate choice tactic because females often accepted the first male encountered, rarely revisited males, visited similar numbers of males in patches of different quality, accepted higher-quality males than those they rejected even on their first encounter with a male in a patch, and had higher acceptance thresholds in high-quality patches than in low-quality patches. This adjustable threshold tactic is consistent with a one-step decision rule and is predicted to occur in species such as pine engravers in which search costs are high and females have information about patch quality before beginning a search in a patch.  相似文献

Summary From a behavioural perspective on adaptive female choice, I developed a by-product runaway model of adaptive mate choice. The model illustrates the evolution of the tail size of peacocks. I consider the causal mechanisms of adaptive female choice: (1) why (ultimate reasons); (2) how (proximate mechanisms). Assumptions are developed based on these behavioural aspects. For (1) ultimate reasons, I assume that many male losers (low-fitness males) always occur due to genetic and environmental uncertainty (A-1). For (2) proximate mechanisms, I assume that losers tend to differ in the expression of a fitness-sensitive trait (an ultimate target, e.g. body size; A-2), that the fitness-sensitive trait correlates with a secondary sexual trait (a proximate cue, e.g. allometry in body size and tail size; (A-3), and that the cue trait has a genetic basis that is independent of the target trait (e.g. a genetic basis in tail ratio to body size; A-4). The model's results are: persistent female choice by means of a proximate cue (R-1); by-product selection on the independent genetic basis of the cue (R-2); and the non-adaptive or maladaptive runaway evolution of the male proximate cue (R-3). In this model, female mate preferences are non-arbitrary and adaptive, whereas the resulting evolution of male secondary sexual traits is non-adaptive in the sense of survival selection.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that mate choicecopying is a viable mating strategy under certain conditions.Copying experiments in fish have been conducted primarily inthe laboratory, except for one study conducted in the fieldunder artificial conditions. We investigated whether in a wildpopulation of the coral reef whitebelly damselfish (Amblyglyphidodonleucogaster) females copy the choice of other females. Femalespreferentially spawn with males that have recently mated. Todetermine if the presence of new eggs in the nest was the reasonfemales chose mates or whether females were mate choice copying,we conducted egg-switching experiments. Eggs from males thatrecently mated were donated to males that had no eggs. If femalesare mate choice copying, then donor males with no eggs in thenest should continue to receive additional eggs. If femalesare using the presence of new eggs as the criterion for matechoice, then foster males with new eggs should receive additionaleggs. We found that donor males received new eggs significantlymore often than expected. More females mated with donor malesthan foster males. Furthermore, females preferentially choseto mate with males whom they had seen mating with another female.Females appear to remember the mate choice of other femalesand choose to mate with those same males even after 1 day. Theseresults suggest that females may be copying the mating decisionof other females rather than choosing males based on the presenceof new eggs in the nest.  相似文献

Speciation processes initiated by divergent selection often fail to complete; yet, how sexual selection is involved in the progress of ecological speciation is rarely understood. Intraspecific body‐size variation affects mate preference and male–male competition, which can consequently lead to assortative mating based on body size. In the present study, we tested the importance of body size difference in the potential of assortative mating between the two eastern newt subspecies, larger Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens and smaller Notophthalmus viridescens dorsalis. Through differential expression of life‐cycle polyphenism, these two subspecies are adapted to contrasting environments, which has likely led to the subspecific body‐size difference. We found that males of both subspecies preferred larger females of N. v. viridescens as mates presumably because of the fecundity advantage of larger females. On the other hand, no evidence of female choice was found. Larger males of N. v. viridescens exhibited greater competitive ability and gained primary access to larger females of their own kind. However, smaller males were able to overcome their inferior competitive ability by interfering with larger males' spermatophore transfer and sneakily mating with larger females. Thus, the subspecific body‐size difference importantly affected sexual selection processes, resulting in nonrandom but not completely assortative mating patterns between the larger and smaller subspecies. Although life‐cycle polyphenism facilitates the intraspecific ecological divergence within N. v. viridescens sexual selection processes, namely smaller males' mate preference for larger females and sexual interference during spermatophore transfer, may be halting completion of the ecological speciation. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 884–897.  相似文献
