The witches' broom disease has been recently observed on poplars in Paris and its suburbs. The incidence of the disease appeared to be considerably high along main roads. The electron microscopic examination of 350 nm thick sieve tube sections revealed the presence of wall-less mycoplasmalike organisms (MLOs) in diseased samples of Populus alba var. nivea Wesm. They could not be found in their healthy counterparts.  相似文献

Serial sections of 350 nm thickness were used to make a correlation between electron and light microscopic observations. While thionin-acridine orange staining gave a positive result to detect abnormal sieve tubes of phyllody affected Phlox drummondii Hook, when observed under light microscope, the same cells revealed the presence of typical mycoplasmalike organisms (MLOs) in electron microscopic examination. Advantage of 350 nm thick sections in electron microscopy, and the utility of the technique in MLO detection have been discussed.  相似文献

Linnaeus listed and described (as Ostrea species) 20 recent pectinid species in the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae and one pectinid species in his Mantissa. These are now placed in 17 genera of the family Pectinidae. Nine species are cited to Museum Ludovicae Ulricae. Ten primary types are present in the Linnéan Society of London, and the same number in die Zoological Museum of die Uppsala University. Two lectotypes were designated recendy by Smith and Waller; 18 lectotypes and one neotype are selected herein. Nine of the species are type species of currently accepted pectinid genera. Seven new type localities are also designated for species which had unknown or erroneous type localities, and six are more restricted. Potential type material of eight species is also traced in the Gualtieri collection of the Museo di Storia Naturale e del Territorio at Certosi di Calci (Italy).  相似文献

Cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) seedlings (3-day-old) were subjected to 4 kinds of experimental treatments: (1) control without exposure to any stress (−D-UV), (2) moderate water stress with no UV-B irradiation (+D-UV), (3) no water stress but to UV-B radiation (−D+UV). and (4)moderate water stress and exposure to UV-B (+D+UV). UV-B and drought stress in the combined form elicited beneficial effects on the morphological and growth characteristics, and a few additive inhibitory effects in some functional processes. An increase in the specific leaf weight (SLW) was observed in the combination of stresses, which could be a defence mechanism against UV-B. The combination of stresses promoted the synthesis of anthocyanins and phenolic compounds. The responses of plants to the combination of stresses indicate that during simultaneous exposure of plants to multiple stresses, one form of stress could minimize the damage by the other. The enhancement of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities appear to serve as acclimation mechanisms to scavenge the toxic, free radicals of oxygen produced under stress conditions. However, the inhibition in nitrate metabolism was greater in the combined stresses than in either of the stresses imposed separately. The results of this study illustrate that the interaction of stresses during simultaneous multiple stress conditions brings out certain beneficial effects.  相似文献

UV‐B dose responses of two lines of pea were quantified at 2.3, 4.6, 6.9 and 9.2 kJ m−2 day−1 UV‐B (weighted according to Caldwell's generalised plant action spectrum) in controlled environments providing near‐field doses of photosynthetic radiation. Increasing UV‐B significantly increased UV‐B absorbing compounds in both lines. In the UV‐B sensitive line, JI1389, increasing UV‐B significantly inhibited most aspects of plant morphology and biomass. In the more UV‐B‐tolerant line, Scout, increasing UV‐B significantly reduced foliage area but had no effect on above‐ground biomass, although root biomass was significantly increased. Reduced plant height in JI1389 was caused by shorter internodes, in turn due to reduced cell number but not cell length. UV‐B had no significant effects on photosynthesis in either line. Significant dose responses were linear for the growth of the main stem in JI1389 but remaining significant dose responses were better fitted by quadratics with maximum UV‐B effects occurring in the range 5–7 kJ m−2 day−1 PAS300, due to stimulation of branch growth at the highest dose. However, growth stimulation by UV‐B was confined to PAS300 doses which at temperate latitudes would result only from rather extreme ozone depletions. We conclude that investigations using relatively low UV‐B doses, rather than those well above the current maximum, may be the best approach to both understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of plant responses to UV‐B and quantifying the magnitude of responses to stratospheric ozone depletion.  相似文献

Cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. cv. Natsusairaku 3) seedlings were grown in a growth cabinet under UV-B (290–320 nm) irradiation (equivalent to the UV-B radiation normally incident at Tokyo, 36°N latitude, during clear sky conditions in mid-april on a weighted daily fluence basis) and a UV-B-free control condition. UV-B irradiation inhibited the growth of the cotyledons, i.e. the increase in area, and increase in fresh and dry weights of the cotyledons. The greatest inhibition rate was observed in the increase in area, causing a significant increase in specific leaf weight (the ratio of weight to area). UV-B irradiation had no significant effect on DNA and RNA contents in the cotyledons, but decreased protein content slightly. In contrast, the irradiation reduced the amounts of organic acids and soluble sugars, indicating that primary carbon metabolism was very sensitive to UV-B radiation. UV-B irradiation lowered the photosynthetic activity in the cotyledons without any effect on chlorophyll content and respiratory activity. These results indicate that UV-B radiation at the ambient level may act as a physiological stress in some UV-sensitive plants.  相似文献

Dr Shigeo Yamanouchi was born in Yamagata Prefecture and completed his secondary education at Tokyo Higher Normal School (THNS) where he was also a professor until 1904. In 1905, he went to the University of Chicago in the USA and earned a PhD in Botany in 1907. He is best noted for his excellent research on the cytology and life histories of the marine algae Polysiphonia, Fucus, Cutleria, Aglaozonia and Zanardinia, published between 1906 and 1921 while he was associated with the University of Chicago. He also described the freshwater green alga Hydrodictyon africanum. In 1910, he returned to THNS as a Professor and wrote several botanical textbooks, receiving his DSc degree in 1911 and traveling in England and the USA as an advisor for the Japanese Ministry of Education during 1911–1913. For much of the time between 1920 and 1942 he remained in the USA, returning to Japan following the advent of World War II, During his later life, he was in obscurity, and sadly there is very little recorded of his activities in the post-war years. He died in Tokyo on 2 February 1973 at the age of 96.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that leaf surface wax influences plant responses to UV-B, 6 lines of cultivated pea (Pisum sativum L.), selected as having more or less wax, were grown at 0 or 6.5 kJ m-2 day-1 plant-weighted UV-B against a background of 850–950 μmol m-2 s-1 photosynthetically active radiation. In the 4 lines with least leaf surface wax the amount of wax on adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces was increased following exposure to 6.5 kJ m-2 day-1 UV-B, but UV-B decreased surface wax in Scout, which had the greatest wax deposits. On the adaxial leaf surface, UV-B radiation caused a shift in wax composition from alcohols to esters and hydrocarbons and the ratio of short to long chain length alkyl ester homologues was increased. There was no evidence of a shortening in carbon chain length of hydrocarbons, primary alcohols or fatty acids due to UV-B and no significant correlation between wax amount and UV reflectance from leaves. UV-B induced significant increases in UV-absorbing compounds in the expanded leaves and buds of most lines. UV-B reduced the growth of all lines. Foliage area (leaves plus stipules) declined by 5–30%, plant dry weight by 12–30%, and plant height by 24–38%. Reductions in growth occurred in the absence of any changes in chlorophyll fluorescence or photosynthetic rate. UV-B also had no major effect on carbon allocation patterns. The effects of UV-B on growth appeared to be due to changes in tissue extension and expansion. Indeed, many of the responses to UV-B observed in this study of pea appear more consistent with indirect effects being expressed in developing tissues rather than through the direct action of UV-B on mature tissues. There was no evidence that wax amount or biochemistry was associated with the sensitivity of the lines to UV-B radiation. Furthermore, induction of pigments was not correlated with changes in growth. However, lines with the greatest constitutive amounts of pigments in unexpanded bud tissues were most tolerant of elevated UV-B.  相似文献

Plants may activate similar defence systems to reduce cellular damages caused by different stress conditions. In the present experiments, the formation of lipid peroxidation products [thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS)] was significant during both drought and ultraviolet (UV)‐B stresses, whereas the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was a more delayed response to UV‐B than to drought. H2O2 was detected during both stresses, whereas ·OH radical production was a more characteristic response to drought. The present characterization of transgenic tobacco plants revealed a common role for aldose/aldehyde reductase (ALR) in the detoxification of lipid peroxidation products under water depletion and UV‐B irradiation. As the result of the increased synthesis of ALR enzyme, the transformed plants were more tolerant to both stress conditions, exhibiting reduced loss of photosynthetic function and decreased accumulation of TBARS and H2O2 as compared to control (SR1) plants. When plants had been exposed to mild, non‐lethal drought and were then watered again to recover, they were more tolerant to a subsequent stress by UV‐B. This was characteristic to both transgenic and wild‐type plants. However, this drought‐induced cross‐tolerance to UV‐B stress of SR1 tobacco did not reach the enhancement achieved by the overexpression of ALR.  相似文献

Sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) plants injected with Cercospora beticota Sace. as well as non-infected plants were grown under visible light with or without ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280–320 nm) radiation for 40 days. An interaction between UV-B radiation and Cercospora leaf spot disease was observed, resulting in a large reduction in leaf chlorophyll content, dry weight of leaf laminae, petioles and storage roots. Lipid peraxidation in leaves also increased the most under the combined treatments. This was also true for ultraweak luminescence from both adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces. However, no correlation between lipid peroxidation and ultraweak luminescence was observed. Ultraviolet-B radiation given alone appeared to have either a stimulating effect, giving an increase in dry weight of laminae and reducing lipid peroxidation, or no effect. This lack of effect was seen in the absence of change in dry weight of storage roots and chlorophyll content relative to controls. The :study demonstrated a harmful interaction between UV-B radiation and Cercospom leaf spot disease on sugar beet.  相似文献

Major depressive disorder is a debilitating disease. Unfortunately, treatment with antidepressants (ADs) has limited therapeutic efficacy since resistance to AD is common. Research in this field is hampered by the lack of a reliable natural animal model of AD resistance. Depression resistance is related to various factors, including the attendance of cardiovascular risk factors and past depressive episodes. We aimed to design a rodent model of depression resistance to ADs, associating cardiovascular risk factors with repeated unpredicted chronic mild stress (UCMS). Male BALB/c mice were given either a regular (4% fat) or a high fat diet (45% fat) and subjected to two 7-week periods of UCMS separated by 6 weeks. From the second week of each UCMS procedure, vehicle or fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) was administrated daily. The effects of the UCMS and fluoxetine in both diet conditions were assessed using physical (coat state and body weight) and behavioural tests (the reward maze test and the splash test). The results demonstrate that during the second procedure, UCMS induced behavioural changes, including coat state degradation, disturbances in self-care behaviour (splash test) and anhedonia (reward maze test) and these were reversed by fluoxetine in the regular diet condition. In contrast, the high-fat diet regimen prevented the AD fluoxetine from abolishing the UCMS-induced changes. In conclusion, by associating UCMS—an already validated animal model of depression—with high-fat diet regimen, we designed a naturalistic animal model of AD resistance related to a sub-nosographic clinical entity of depression.  相似文献

Organisms produce stress proteins as a response to natural and anthropogenic environmental changes. Induction of stress proteins has been reported in a variety of aquatic organisms, including rotifers, exposed to pollutants. Past studies on stress protein responses of rotifers have focused on exposure to single toxicants. In this study the rotifer Plationus patulus was exposed singly and in combination to various concentrations of As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Following exposure, total protein was quantified (Bradford method) and stress protein 60 (HSP60) was identified using Western blotting. P. patulus induced HSP60 as a response to single exposures to Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. HSP60 expression was increased (2 fold) in rotifers exposed to these single elements at both low and high concentrations as compared to unexposed rotifers. Arsenic exposure resulted in a 2 fold decrease in HSP induction. In rotifers exposed to metal mixtures, HSP60 was induced by the presence of As–Zn, As–Cr–Cu–Pb, As–Cr–Cu, As–Cr–Cu–Ni and As–Cr–Cu–Ni–Pb combinations in the media. HSP60 response to As and heavy metals toxicity depends on the type and number of elements present in the media as well as their concentrations and length of the exposure time.  相似文献

Chiari malformation type I (CMI) is a disorder characterized by hindbrain overcrowding into an underdeveloped posterior cranial fossa (PCF), often causing progressive neurological symptoms. The etiology of CMI remains unclear and is most likely multifactorial. A putative genetic contribution to CMI is suggested by familial aggregation and twin studies. Experimental models and human morphometric studies have suggested an underlying paraxial mesoderm insufficiency. We performed a case-control association study of 303 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) across 58 candidate genes involved in early paraxial mesoderm development in a sample of 415 CMI patients and 524 sex-matched controls. A subgroup of patients diagnosed with classical, small-PCF CMI by means of MRI-based PCF morphometry (n = 186), underwent additional analysis. The genes selected are involved in signalling gradients occurring during segmental patterning of the occipital somites (FGF8, Wnt, and retinoic acid pathways and from bone morphogenetic proteins or BMP, Notch, Cdx and Hox pathways) or in placental angiogenesis, sclerotome development or CMI-associated syndromes. Single-marker analysis identified nominal associations with 18 SNPs in 14 genes (CDX1, FLT1, RARG, NKD2, MSGN1, RBPJ1, FGFR1, RDH10, NOG, RARA, LFNG, KDR, ALDH1A2, BMPR1A) considering the whole CMI sample. None of these overcame corrections for multiple comparisons, in contrast with four SNPs in CDX1, FLT1 and ALDH1A2 in the classical CMI group. Multiple marker analysis identified a risk haplotype for classical CMI in ALDH1A2 and CDX1. Furthermore, we analyzed the possible contributions of the most significantly associated SNPs to different PCF morphometric traits. These findings suggest that common variants in genes involved in somitogenesis and fetal vascular development may confer susceptibility to CMI.  相似文献
