The biological basis underlying the increased risk of nondisjunction in offspring of women of advanced maternal age is not understood. We sought to test the hypothesis that maternal reproductive age (distance in time from approaching menopause) rather than chronological age is pivotal in the etiology of nondisjunction. Our results found no difference in age of menopause between women 30 years old at delivery of a child with trisomy 21 (i.e., age-related nondisjunction) compared to controls. Among women <30 years of age at delivery of a child with trisomy 21, none underwent premature menopause. Therefore, our findings fail to support the theory that reproductive age plays a major role in the etiology of nondisjunction.  相似文献

The reproductive history of 207 female Barbary macaques, living in a large outdoor enclosure in Southwest Germany, was studied during an 11-year period. The results yielded a significant relationship between female age and fecundity, with fertility rates lower than expected among young and old females. Analysis of the reproductive history of individual females revealed a significant decline in fertility from prime age (7–12 years) to mid age (13–19 years), and from mid age to old age (20–25 years). The proportion of long interbirth intervals increased steadily among aging females. Infant survival was not significantly related to maternal age, but offspring of old females showed the highest survivorship. Behavioral observations revealed that old mothers weaned their offspring significantly later than younger mothers, suggesting that prolongation of interbirth intervals is due not only to deteriorating physical condition but also to increased maternal investment, as life history theory predicts. Reproduction ceased during the middle of the third decade of life. Final cessation of estrous cycling invariably occurred 3 or 4 years after the birth of the last offspring, but a postreproductive life span of 5 years appears to be common in this population. Available data suggest that reproductive senescence and menopause are more common among nonhuman primates than widely believed and that both traits are part of an adaptive life history strategy.  相似文献

Bilateral olfactory bulbectomy was performed on the rhesus macaque (M. mulatta) at 6 to 8 months of age. Social interaction and plasma testosterone levels obtained at approximately 2-1/2 years of age indicated that early olfactory bulb ablation resulted in higher levels of aggressivity concomitant with lower levels of social facilitory behavior. Bulbectomy did not interfere with the development of normal sexual posturing and orientation at the juvenile stage. Lower testosterone levels in the anosmic females indicated possible delay in the onset of puberty, while no differences were found in testosterone between the anosmic and control males. Synopsis Age composition, growth and body condition of the Sarotherodon mossambicus (Peters) stock in the Plover Cove Reservoir were investigated. The fish in this reservoir have a relatively short life cycle; the stock consisted of mainly two to three age groups. Influx of recruits in September and October maintained a high proportion of O-age group fish in the stock. This percentage remained high until the following March or April when the I-age group attained dominance. Length-weight analyses indicated that S. mossembicus conform to the allometric formula W = aLn with a and n exhibiting marked seasonal variations. Growth was most rapid during the first 20 months of life and decreased noticeably after 30 months. In general growth was limited to those months when the water temperature was above 20° C. Both body condition and visceral fat content exhibited seasonal variations which were not correlated with each other or with variations in temperature. However, body condition appears to be directly related to feeding intensity. Mean body condition decreased with increasing age and also decreased progressively during this study. This progressive decrease was probably related to the progressive decrease in salinity of the water and also the carrying capacity of the reservoir rather than to the nutrient content of the water. Mean values for the body condition of females were in general higher than for males, suggesting that females are more robust than males.Maximum accumulations of fat occurred in June and July, corresponding to the breeding period. Such accumulations are thought to be a prerequisite before spawning.  相似文献

Measurements of root-length density (RLD) in a range of 31 apple, kiwifruit, peach, Asian pear and grape orchards were used to derive indices to describe the exploration and exploitation of rooting volumes. Orchards were of various ages and located on a range of soil types, geographic regions, management systems etc. Data were obtained from core samples of volume 1.66×10-4 m3 randomly taken within a standard volume, determined by average planting grids, of 2 m radius centred on tree stems, and 1 m depth. Root systems were described using an exploitation index, E(), and an exploration index, E(0). E() is defined as the proportion of the soil volume which contains roots at RLD greater than or equal to some specified value, . E(0) is defined as the proportion of the soil volume which contains roots at any RLD greater than zero. These indices are dependent on sample size, as are all volumetric or soil-coring data.Estimates of E(0) for each orchard were obtained as the proportions of cores containing any RLD>O and assessed for dependence on species. Peach trees had a significantly higher value of E(0), equal to almost 1.0, compared to the other four species where E(0) was approximately 0.8 (p0.01) or less. There was also some variation with age. E(0) was lower for very young plants which had not fully occupied the sampled soil volume. Exploration indices for woody roots increased with rootstock age but otherwise did not explain large differences in E() between species for given values.For example at =0.05×104 m.m-3, E() was approximately 0.45 for peach and kiwifruit, and 0.05 for apple, Asian pear and grape, whereas at =0.5×104 m.m-3 the corresponding values were 0.1 and almost zero. Negative exponential curves relating E(), scaled by dividing by E(0), to were fitted for each of the 31 orchards. Exponents for these curves, k, were significantly smaller for kiwifruit and peaches than apples, grapes and Asian pears (p0.05), and smaller for apples than grapes and Asian pears (p0.05). A larger k implies a rapid fall-off in E() as increases. Although all five species contained zero and low RLD samples, only kiwifruit and peaches contained higher RLD values and consequently have higher mean RLD. This trend was consistent across all soils, regions, sampling dates, and plant ages.The analyses demonstrate that core sampling can give useful insights into macro-scale root-system distribution, such as the proportion of a soil volume explored and how it is exploited. If positions of core samples are noted during sampling using angular direction, depth and radial distance as spatial coordinates the method can be used to describe root-system structures.  相似文献

As our closest living relatives, great apes likely experience behavioral and physiological patterns associated with reproductive aging and menopause that are similar to human patterns. We present results from a nationwide zoo-based study on behavioral and hormonal changes in female western gorillas. We evaluated progestogen concentrations via daily fecal sampling in 30 gorillas, 22 of which were geriatric (≥30). We collected concurrent behavioral data 1–3 times weekly on 16 of the females. While control females cycled regularly, ca. 23% of geriatric females are acyclic (menopausal), and another 32% show variable hormonal patterns suggesting perimenopause. Patterns included increased variability in cycle length and peak progestogen values, and frequent insufficient increases in progestogen levels during the luteal phase. Acyclic females have significantly lower overall progestogen concentrations than the self cycling females, though differences are not significant when cycle phase is incorporated. We detected behavioral estrus in 9 of 10 cycling females for which data were available. In all but 1 case, proceptive behavior occurred during the follicular phase, preceding ovulation on average by 6.6 d. Females spent more time in proximity to the silverback male while in behavioral estrus than during other periods. To date, maximum longevity in captive female gorillas is 52 yr, with poor reproductive prognosis beginning from the age of 37. We demonstrate that both perimenopause and menopause characterize aged female gorillas, which may experience a postreproductive lifespan of >25% of their lives. Continued study of aging apes is warranted, and apes may serve as models for age-related reproductive changes in humans.  相似文献

Life-history characteristics of the double-ended pipefish, Syngnathoides biaculeatus (Bloch), were investigated to determine growth rate, degree of sexual dimorphism, size at maturity, and reproductive biology. Growth rates of wild juveniles and adults calculated from monthly progression of length-frequency modes ranged from 0.8mmd–1 (fish lengths 120–145mm standard length (SL)) in summer to 0.2mmd–1 in winter (185–200mm SL). Growth of laboratory-reared juveniles up to 63d old was greater, ranging from 0.8 to 2.3mmd-1. The von Bertalanffy growth constant K was estimated at 0.0076d- 1, or 2.8year–1. Morphological differentiation between the sexes based upon abdominal pattern was possible for fish larger than 120mm SL, with females possessing a zigzag pattern on the abdomen. The association between this pattern and sex was confirmed by histological gonad analysis. Males were significantly longer than females during four of seven seasons examined, and a 1:1 sex ratio was determined for all seasons except autumn when the ratio was female biased. The breeding season was marked by the appearance of pregnant males between October and April, and during courtship both species exhibited increased pigmentation. The minimum paternal size at maturity was 185mm, the maximum length recorded 260mm. Clutch size ranged between 60 and 200 eggs, with a mean of 153. Ovaries had a sequential pattern of egg development, resulting in egg batches that approximated the number of eggs carried by brooding males. Additionally, all eggs in a brood were at the same developmental stage. This suggests that one female provides all of the eggs for one male per breeding event in a monogamous mating system.  相似文献

Hybridizations ofElymus nutans andE. jacquemontii were carried out with one species ofPseudoroegneria (S genome), and 20Elymus species, each containing either of the SH, SY, SYH, or SYW genomes. Chromosome configurations were analysed at metaphase I of the two target taxa and their interspecific hybrids. It is concluded that (i)E. nutans is an allohexaploid containing the SYH genomes, andE. jacquemontii is an allotetraploid having the SY genomes; (ii) the genomic affinity is associated with the geographic distance between the species studied; (iii) minor genomic structural rearrangements have occurred within the hexaploid taxon ofE. nutans.  相似文献

Summary Six juvenile and adult patients with progressive neurological diseases and -galactosidase deficiency were reported. Any diseases known to date were denied. These cases together with ten case reports in the literature were reviewed and were classified into three groups from clinical and biochemical points. Group 1 patients were characterized by progressive ataxia and myoclonus with gargoyle changes and macular cherry-red spots. In this syndrome -galactosidase activity seems to be secondarily affected by other biochemical defects. A group 2 patient showed similar neurological manifestations without gargoyle changes or macular cherry-red spots. Patients with these clinical features not associated with -galactosidase deficiency have also been described in the literature. Group 3 patients had progressive pyramidal and extrapyramidal disease without gargoyle changes or macular cherry-red spots. These cases may represent juvenile and adult type GM1-gangliosidosis. Accumulation of GM1 has not yet been demonstrated.  相似文献

Summary The perennial foliage of the California coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia Nee) permits herbivores to feed on this oak species throughout the year. Patterns of herbivory for a two-year period on Q. agrifolia were observed in relation to seasonal and age-related changes in the nutritional and defensive characteristics of leaves. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents were higher in new leaves compared to mature foliage. Structural compounds (e.g., cellulose) in leaves rapidly increased with age. Concentrations of tatal phenolics (Folin-Denis) and astringency were higher in new foliage, and concentrations of condensed tannins gradually increased as the leaves matured. Peaks of herbivore damage were observed in June and in September–October, and were caused by outbreaks of the California oak moth (Phryganidia californica). P. californica, a bivoltine oak specialist, exhibited feeding preferences in June for old leaves over emerging leaves, and showed no preferences for leaf classes in September. These results suggest that P. californica is adapted to survive on nutritionally poor foliage and to circumvent quantitative defenses such as condensed tannins.  相似文献

The timing of reproduction affected litter size, offspring mass, and offspring survival in the Uinta ground squirrel, Spermophilus armatus, in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Survival of juvenile females to yearling age varied negatively with date of weaning and positively with individual offspring mass. At the same time, juveniles weaned early in the season were lighter, and juveniles weaned later in the season were heavier. The coefficient of variation for juvenile body mass, originally measured at weaning, significantly decreased by the time juveniles entered hibernation, indicating that individuals weaned early and light caught up in body mass to individuals weaned later and heavier. From the perspective of the mother's investment in the litter, litter size (corrected for mother's mass) decreased with later wcaning dates, while the relationship of weaning date to litter mass (corrected for mother's mass) was significant in only one year. Maternal allocation of resources in litters changed over the season so that mothers produced many, small offspring early in the season, and fewer, large offspring late in the season.  相似文献

Les études ultrastructurales montrent que les corpora allata dégénèrent rapidement sous l'action des 400 g de précocène 2.
Summary In fifth instar locusts, with intact corpora allata or previously subjected to precocene 2 action, a single injection of 10 g juvenile hormone 1 leads, at the next molt, to the appearance of individuals displaying characters ranging from the typical larval to the typical imaginal ones. But, unexpectedly, the phenotypic variations are more marked in the precocene 2 treated locusts, and are typified by an increased retention of larval characters. Electron microscopic studies indicate that the use of 400 g of precocene 2 rapidly leads to the degeneration of the corpora allata.

Synopsis Length-frequency data suggest Nile perch, Lates niloticus, from the Nyanza Gulf grew to a total length of 9 cm by age 118 days and 23 cm by age 287 days. A modified von Bertalanffy growth curve t = 1.35·L(1-e–K(t-t o)) with the parameters L = 93.1, K = 0.272 and to = 0.046, is suggested to describe growth up to 5 years of age and the relationship t = 1.35·(31.96 + 7.681t) for fish aged 6 years and above. Length-weight relationships were = 0.0234·-gt2.74 for fish between 7 and 15.9 cm total length, = 0.0151·2.94 for fish between 16 and 45.9 cm total length, and = 0.0023·3.44 for fish between 46 and 120 cm total length. Male Nile perch first matured between 50 and 55 cm total length when they were probably 2 years old; female Nile perch first matured between 80 and 85 cm total length when they were probably 4 years old. Small males were common, large males were rare, with the reverse holding for females. Sex change, from male to female, is a possible explanation for this size dimorphism.  相似文献

Summary Pituitary glands from juvenile (pre-pubertal) and adult male and female rhesus monkeys were examined following immunocytochemical staining with antisera to the beta subunits of ovine luteinizing hormone (LH) and of human thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The LH antiserum reacts with a cell that is PAS-positive, occurs singly and is randomly distributed throughout the pars distalis. The diameter of these cells is approximately 11.5 m. They do not seem to vary in number in either juveniles (pre-pubertals) or adults, or in males or females. There appears to be fewer LH cells in the pituitary glands of pregnant and lactating females. In addition to staining cells in the pars distalis, the antiserum also reacts with a population of cells located in the pars tuberalis.The cells that stain with the anti-TSH serum are confined primarily to the pars distalis. They are approximately 15.8 m in diameter and are generally found in groups or clusters located in the anterior and medial regions of the gland. The TSH cells vary in number from one animal to another; however, this variability is unrelated to the age or the sex of the animals. Gloshedobin, a thrombin-like enzyme from the venom of Gloydius shedaoensis, was expressed in Escherichia coli using expression vector pET-32a(+). The gene was expressed under T7 promotor with a fusion partner of Thx.Tag and a 6xHis.Tag at its 5 terminal. After induction by IPTG for 6 h, the recombinant enzyme was expressed in the cytoplasm. Expression at 25°C gave twice the amount of recombinant gloshedobin in cytoplasm than at 37°C.  相似文献

Summary The ontogenesis of cells containing polypeptide hormones (ACTH, MSH, LPH, GH and Prolactin) was investigated in the fetal rat hypophysis by immunohistochemistry using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex.Corticotrophs, melanotrophs and lipotropic cells were revealed earlier in the pars distalis than in the pars intermedia. In the pars distalis, cells producing LPH were found in the morning of day 15 of gestation using anti-- or anti--LPH sera, and in the afternoon using anti-- or -endorphin sera. Cells containing -MSH were observed from the afternoon of day 15. The cells stainable with the anti--MSH, anti--(17-39)ACTH and anti--(l-24)ACTH sera appeared on day 16. In the pars intermedia, the cells producing -MSH, MSH, - and -endorphin, and -LPH were observed in the morning of day 17, while cells containing ACTH were only revealed in the afternoon of the same day of gestation. Based on the treatment of serial paraffin sections with various antisera, it was clearly shown that MSH, ACTH, and LPH occur in the same cells located in the pars distalis as in the pars intermedia.The development of the corticotrophs, melanotrophs and lipotropic cells does not require the presence of the fetal hypothalamus or other central nervous structures. The pituitary glands of 21 day-old fetuses encephalectomized on day 16 showed as many reactive cells as those of the littermate controls.The somatotrophs were first revealed in the pars distalis in the afternoon of day 19. The cells producing prolactin were not observed before day 21 of gestation. On some cases GH and prolactin were found together in one cell. The cytodifferentiation of GH and prolactin cells is apparently not under hypothalamic control.  相似文献

Summary Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropic hormone (GTH) were identified by immunohistochemistry in the brains and pituitaries of neonate, juvenile and adult guppies. GTH was present in some cells of the pars intermedia (pi) and proximal pars distalis (ppd) of all animals. GnRH was found in the perikarya of the nucleus olfactoretinalis. In the pituitaries of juvenile 30-day-old guppies, GnRH-immunoreactive cells existed in a juvenile pattern, whereas in adult animals GnRH was recognized in only a few cells. GnRH-immunoreactive fibers were seen in the pituitaries of animals that were 30 days or older. In adult guppies, the ventral and lateral ppd (the gonadotropic region) contained a dense network of GnRH-immunoreactive fibers. Pituitary cells staining for either GnRH or GTH were located in different places. After immunohistochemical double staining of adult pituitaries, none of the GnRH-immunoreactive cells were LH-immunoreactive, although both cell types were often found in close proximity. After 20 days or more of ethinylestradiol treatment, less immunoreactive GnRH was detected in the pituitary cells of juvenile guppies, and fewer animals exhibited the juvenile pattern of GnRH-immunoreactive pituitary cells, when compared with untreated controls. The results indicate that GnRH-immunoreactive pituitary cells in the guppy are distinct from gonadotropes and that these cells are involved in regulatory processes along the juvenile brain-pituitary-gonad axis.  相似文献

X-linked polymorphic variation of thyroxin-binding globulin (TBG) is observed in several human groups. Isoelectric focusing of plasma samples labeled in vitro with [125I]thyroxin, followed by autoradiography, also reveals genetically determined polymorphic electrophoretic variation in baboon TBG. The protein detected by this method in baboon plasma is immunologically similar to human TBG and is distinct from the other thyroxin-binding proteins, albumin and prealbumin. The isoelectric patterns of human and baboon TBG are very similar and both have an isoelectric range of pH 4.1 to 4.5. The baboon TBG polymorphism is inherited in a two-allele X-linked fashion, with a frequency of 72% for the common allele and 28% for the slow allele. A survey of seven other primate species including African green monkey, bonnet macaque, chimpanzee, crab-eating macaque, gorilla, rhesus monkey, and spider monkey revealed no polymorphic variation in TBG, although isoelectric patterns were similar to the human and baboon patterns. In addition, samples from pregnant chimpanzees demonstrate a pronounced quantitative anodal shift in relative band densities, a shift also observed in pregnant humans. This shift was not observed in samples from pregnant baboons. The nematode species Rhabditis sp. SB347 (Family Rhabditidae) in standard culture conditions displays two developmental morphs with distinct modes of sexual reproduction: (1) females and males that develop through four feeding juvenile (larval) stages; (2) self-fertile protandric hermaphrodites that develop through an obligatory non-feeding third juvenile stage, the dauer larva. In females and males, somatic gonad development begins in the first larval stage, whereas in hermaphrodites it is delayed to the second larval stage. Vulval development also differs between females and hermaphrodites: (1) the P8.p cell divides in females but stays undivided in hermaphrodites; (2) the number, timing, and source of inductive signals from the gonad to the vulval precursor cells differ between the two morphs. These results show that discrete vulva developmental routes can be adopted by animals of the same genotype.Edited by D. Tautz  相似文献

A cytogenetic study performed on a population of the South American leptodactylid frog Eleutherodactylus maussi revealed multiple sex chromosomes of the X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y (=XXAA/XXAY) type. The diploid chromosome number is 2n=36 in all females and 2n=35 in most males. The multiple sex chromosomes originated by a centric fusion between the original Y chromosome and a large autosome. In male meiosis the X1X2Y (=XXAY) multiple sex chromosomes form a classical trivalent configuration. E. maussi is the first species discovered in the class Amphibia that is distinguished by a system of multiple sex chromosomes. Only one single male was found in the population with 2n=36 chromosomes and lacking the Y-autosomal fusion.
