Aphid life cycles can encompass cyclical parthenogenesis, obligate parthenogenesis, obligate parthenogenesis with male production and an intermediate 'bet-hedging' strategy where an aphid genotype will over-winter by continuing to reproduce by parthenogenesis and by investment in sexually produced eggs. In this paper, we focus on aphid lineages that reproduce entirely parthenogenetically (asexual aphids), in contrast to those that have any sexual forms in the annual cycle. Using modern molecular techniques, aphid biologists have made many empirical observations showing that asexual lineages are widespread both geographically and temporally. Indeed, we are collectively beginning to gather data on the evolution and persistence of these lineages through time. Here we review aphid karyology and parthenogenesis, both essential for interpretation of the molecular and ecological evolution of aphid asexual lineages. We describe the growing list of studies that have identified aphid genotypes that are both temporally and geographically widespread. We then collate examples of molecular and chromosomal evolution in asexual aphids and review the literature pertaining to phenotypic evolution and ecological diversification of asexual aphid lineages. In addition, we briefly discuss the potential of bacterial endosymbionts and epigenetic effects to influence the evolution of asexual aphid lineages. Lastly we provide a list of aphid taxa believed to be obligately asexual. This will be a useful resource for those seeking parthenogenetic animals as study systems. In conclusion, we present guidelines for the use of the term clone in aphid biology and stress the need for well-designed and well-executed studies examining the potential of asexual aphid lineages for adaptive evolution.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. Models of population structure have emphasized the importance of sex in maintaining lineages. This is because, despite the well known ‘two‐fold cost of sex’ compared with asex, it is considered that recombination rids the genome of accumulated mutations and increases its potential for adaptive variation. However, asexual lineages of eukaryotic organisms can also rapidly gain genetic variance directly by various mutational processes, thereby proving that so‐called ‘clones’ do not have strict genetic fidelity ( Lushai & Loxdale, 2002 ; Loxdale & Lushai, 2003a ), whereas the variation so produced may well have adaptive advantage during the evolutionary process. This being so, obligated asexuals or cyclical parthenogens that occasionally indulge in sexual recombination (‘rare sex’) cannot be deemed as ‘evolutionary dead‐ends’( Lushai, Loxdale & Allen, 2003a ). In addition, the persistence of asexual lineages (i.e. lineage longevity) may also involve the integrity of the telomere region, the physical end of the chromosomes ( Loxdale & Lushai, 2003b ). In this earlier study on this topic, we argued that the persistence and ultimate senescence of eukaryotic cell lineages (based upon the frequency of ‘capped’ and ‘uncapped’ chromosomes related to telomere functionality; Blackburn, 2000 ) may directly relate to the survival and persistence of lineages of whole asexual organisms. Aphids are a good model system to test this hypothesis because they show a variety of sexual/asexual reproductive strategies, whereas their mode of asexual reproduction is of the mitotic (= apomictic) type. We also suggested that many aphid lineages require occasional or even rare sexual recombination to re‐set telomere length to allow lineages to persist. Ample empirical evidence from diverse taxa, lineages, and different developmental stages now reveals that the telomere states are indeed re‐set by recombination (homologous or meiotic), thereby rejuvenating the lineage in question. The generational clock element of telomeric functionality has also been successfully described in artificially‐induced mammalian clonal systems. It thus appears that telomere function is a central molecular mechanism instigating and promoting lineage continuity per se. By contrast, we hypothesized that other long‐lived asexuals, or the rare category of ancient asexuals such as bdelloid rotifers, have compensatory mechanisms for maintaining chromosome functional integrity, which are somewhat different from conventional telomeric repeats. In the present study, we carry the analogy between eukaryotic cell functionality and aphid lineages a stage further. Here, we hypothesize that the changing frequency of capped and uncapped telomeres, progressing to senescence in a stochastic manner, may be an underlying factor that significantly contributes to population dynamics in asexual lineage evolution. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 90 , 719–728.  相似文献

The presence and extent of mitonuclear discordance in coexisting sexual and asexual lineages provides insight into 1) how and when asexual lineages emerged, and 2) the spatial and temporal scales at which the ecological and evolutionary processes influencing the evolution of sexual and asexual reproduction occur. Here, we used nuclear single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and a mitochondrial gene to characterize phylogeographic structure and the extent of mitonuclear discordance in Potamopyrgus antipodarum. This New Zealand freshwater snail is often used to study the evolution and maintenance of sex because obligately sexual and obligately asexual individuals often coexist. While our data indicate that sexual and asexual P. antipodarum sampled from the same lake population are often genetically similar, suggesting recent origin of these asexuals from sympatric sexual P. antipodarum, we also found significantly more population structure in sexuals vs. asexuals. This latter result suggests that some asexual lineages originated in other lakes and/or in the relatively distant past. When comparing mitochondrial and nuclear population genetic structure, we discovered that one mitochondrial haplotype (‘1A’) was rare in sexuals, but common and widespread in asexuals. Haplotype 1A frequency and nuclear genetic diversity were not associated, suggesting that the commonness of this haplotype cannot be attributed entirely to genetic drift and pointing instead to a role for selection.  相似文献

1 The population of peach‐potato aphid Myzus persicae in Scotland is comprised almost entirely of long‐term asexual clones. 2 Over a ten year period, M. persicae from Scottish fields and suction traps were analysed with six microsatellite markers. 3 Out of 1497 individuals analysed, 14 clones (denoted A–N) comprised over 98% of the collection. 4 Some clones were particularly abundant but most clones had a widespread distribution on all available plants. 5 Clones E and L had distinct features in their distributions as clone L was geographically totally restricted to the north east of Scotland and clone E showed a marked preference for brassica crops. 6 Clones E and L provide direct evidence of a role for local adaptations in the distribution of M. persicae clones.  相似文献

Cyclical parthenogens, including aphids, are attractive models for comparing the genetic outcomes of sexual and asexual reproduction, which determine their respective evolutionary advantages. In this study, we examined how reproductive mode shapes genetic structure of sexual (cyclically parthenogenetic) and asexual (obligately parthenogenetic) populations of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi by comparing microsatellite and allozyme data sets. Allozymes showed little polymorphism, confirming earlier studies with these markers. In contrast, microsatellite loci were highly polymorphic and showed patterns very discordant from allozyme loci. In particular, microsatellites revealed strong heterozygote excess in asexual populations, whereas allozymes showed heterozygote deficits. Various hypotheses are explored that could account for the conflicting results of these two types of genetic markers. A strong differentiation between reproductive modes was found with both types of markers. Microsatellites indicated that sexual populations have high allelic polymorphism and heterozygote deficits (possibly because of population subdivision, inbreeding or selection). Little geographical differentiation was found among sexual populations confirming the large dispersal ability of this aphid. In contrast, asexual populations showed less allelic polymorphism but high heterozygosity at most loci. Two alternative hypotheses are proposed to explain this heterozygosity excess: allele sequence divergence during long-term asexuality or hybrid origin of asexual lineages. Clonal diversity of asexual lineages of R. padi was substantial suggesting that they could have frozen genetic diversity from the pool of sexual lineages. Several widespread asexual genotypes were found to persist through time, as already seen in other aphid species, a feature seemingly consistent with the general-purpose genotype hypothesis.  相似文献

How changes in selective regimes affect trait evolution is an important open biological question. We take advantage of naturally occurring and repeated transitions from sexual to asexual reproduction in a New Zealand freshwater snail species, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, to address how evolution in an asexual context—including the potential for relaxed selection on male‐specific traits—influences sperm morphology. The occasional production of male offspring by the otherwise all‐female asexual P. antipodarum lineages affords a unique and powerful opportunity to assess the fate of sperm traits in a context where males are exceedingly rare. These comparisons revealed that the sperm produced by ‘asexual’ males are markedly distinct from sexual counterparts. We also found that the asexual male sperm harboured markedly higher phenotypic variation and was much more likely to be morphologically abnormal. Together, these data suggest that transitions to asexual reproduction might be irreversible, at least in part because male function is likely to be compromised. These results are also consistent with a scenario where relaxed selection and/or mutation accumulation in the absence of sex translates into rapid trait degeneration.  相似文献

The aphid Rhopalosiphum padi shows coexistence of sexual and asexual populations, providing an opportunity to study the evolution of breeding system variation in the context of theories on the origin and maintenance of sex. However, assessments of the distribution of sexual and asexual lineages of this aphid are complicated by the difficulties in rapidly characterizing their breeding system. To facilitate this task and to gain insight into the genetic relatedness between sexual and asexual genotypes, molecular markers linked to breeding system differences were recently developed. In this study, we have successfully converted a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker associated with life-cycle variation in R. padi into a codominant sequences-characterized amplified region (SCAR). Segregating and natural populations of known breeding systems were examined to evaluate the life cycle-SCAR marker association. Complete linkage was found in segregating populations while the association averaged 94% in field populations. Detailed analysis of allelic distribution and sequence divergence of the SCAR locus among sexual and asexual populations provides further evidence for a unique and apparently ancient loss of sexuality in this aphid. It also suggests that occasional gene flow occurs between populations differing in their breeding system, mediated by males produced by 'asexual' lineages. This system provides the possibility for the recurrent emergence of new asexual lineages, ensuring the longer persistence of asexuality, and would have important implications for the assessment of costs and benefits of sex in aphids.  相似文献

The microbiome can significantly impact host phenotypes and serve as an additional source of heritable genetic variation. While patterns across eukaryotes are consistent with a role for symbiotic microbes in host macroevolution, few studies have examined symbiont‐driven host evolution or the ecological implications of a dynamic microbiome across temporal, spatial or ecological scales. The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, and its eight heritable bacterial endosymbionts have served as a model for studies on symbiosis and its potential contributions to host ecology and evolution. But we know little about the natural dynamics or ecological impacts of the heritable microbiome of this cosmopolitan insect pest. Here we report seasonal shifts in the frequencies of heritable defensive bacteria from natural pea aphid populations across two host races and geographic regions. Microbiome dynamics were consistent with symbiont responses to host‐level selection and findings from one population suggested symbiont‐driven adaptation to seasonally changing parasitoid pressures. Conversely, symbiont levels were negatively correlated with enemy‐driven mortality when measured across host races, suggesting important ecological impacts of host race microbiome divergence. Rapid drops in symbiont frequencies following seasonal peaks suggest microbiome instability in several populations, with potentially large costs of ‘superinfection’ under certain environmental conditions. In summary, the realization of several laboratory‐derived, a priori expectations suggests important natural impacts of defensive symbionts in host‐enemy eco‐evolutionary feedbacks. Yet negative findings and unanticipated correlations suggest complexities within this system may limit or obscure symbiont‐driven contemporary evolution, a finding of broad significance given the widespread nature of defensive microbes across plants and animals.  相似文献

Asexuality confers demographic advantages to invasive taxa, but generally limits adaptive potential for colonizing of new habitats. Therefore, pre-existing adaptations and habitat tolerance are essential in the success of asexual invaders. We investigated these key factors of invasiveness by assessing reproductive modes and host-plant adaptations in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, a pest recently introduced into Chile. The pea aphid encompasses lineages differing in their reproductive mode, ranging from obligatory cyclical parthenogenesis to fully asexual reproduction. This species also shows variation in host use, with distinct biotypes specialized on different species of legumes as well as more polyphagous populations. In central Chile, microsatellite genotyping of pea aphids sampled on five crops and wild legumes revealed three main clonal genotypes, which showed striking associations with particular host plants rather than sampling locations. Phenotypic analyses confirmed their strong host specialization and demonstrated parthenogenesis as their sole reproductive mode. The genetic relatedness of these clonal genotypes with corresponding host-specialized populations from the Old World indicated that each clone descended from a particular Eurasian biotype, which involved at least three successful introduction events followed by spread on different crops. This study illustrates that multiple introductions of highly specialized clones, rather than local evolution in resource use and/or selection of generalist genotypes, can explain the demographic success of a strictly asexual invader.  相似文献

微卫星(SSR)是以1~6个碱基为重复单位组成的简单串联重复序列,具有丰度高、多态性高、共显性遗传、选择中性和可重复性好等优点。微卫星标记技术可分为三种类型:基于杂交的SSR指纹,基于PCR的SSR指纹和单位点SSR的PCR扩增。前两者不需要知道基因组序列信息,属于多位点标记;后者则需要前期工作,属于单位点标记,即通常所指的微卫星标记。到目前为止,共在14种蚜中筛选到141个微卫星位点,并发表了相关的引物序列,这给今后的相关研究提供了丰富的共享资源。业已证明微卫星引物在邻近种之间有一定的通用性。微卫星标记严格遵守孟德尔遗传规律,已经被用来推断某些蚜虫有性生殖的情况。同种蚜虫中可能同时存在有性系和无性系,微卫星研究证明有性系比无性系有更高的遗传多样性,无性系通常表现出杂合过剩和连锁不平衡。蚜虫的迁飞规律适合用微卫星标记加以研究,已有的研究显示在具有高度迁飞特性的种类中,地理种群间的遗传分化程度低,基因频率的相似性高。存在广泛分布的相同的多位点基因型是迁飞性蚜虫的另一个重要特征。在我国,微卫星应用于蚜虫生物学研究的工作还较少,鉴于该种标记的优良特性和巨大的潜力,本文建议今后相关的研究应该首先考虑微卫星标记。  相似文献

This study focused on evaluating the genetic diversity among ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma mali’ (‘Ca. P. mali’) populations in orchards of north‐western Italy, where apple proliferation (AP) disease is widespread and induces severe economic losses. ‘Ca. P. mali’ was detected through restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of PCR‐amplified 16S rDNA in 101 of 114 samples examined. Collective RFLP patterns, obtained by restriction analyses of four amplified genomic segments (16S/23S rDNA, PR‐1, PR‐2 and PR‐3 non‐ribosomal region, ribosomal protein genes rplVrpsC and secY gene), revealed the presence of 12 distinct genetic lineages among 60 selected representative ‘Ca. P. mali’ isolates, underscoring an unexpected high degree of genetic heterogeneity among AP phytoplasma populations in north‐western Italy. Prevalence of distinct genetic lineages in diverse geographic regions opens new interesting avenues for studying the epidemiology of AP disease. Furthermore, lineage‐specific molecular markers identified in this work could be useful for investigating the biological life cycle of ‘Ca. P. mali’.  相似文献

Theory predicts that asexual reproduction has a competitive advantage over sexual reproduction because of the twofold cost of producing males. Few systems are suitable for directly testing this prediction. In the solitary parasitoid wasp Venturia canescens both arrhenotokously (sexual) and thelytokously (asexual) reproducing individuals occur sympatrically. We sampled 922 wasps from 22 localities along the coast of south‐eastern France. Thelytokous wasps were less abundant (23%) than arrhenotokous wasps and were almost always found in sympatry with arrhenotokous ones. An analysis of genetic relatedness using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers showed the existence of a widespread thelytokous clone. In addition, a few thelytokous individuals were found to be closely related to arrhenotokous ones and vice versa. These data suggest the occurrence of occasional gene flow between both reproductive modes and/or recurrent origin of thelytokous clones from coexisting arrhenotokous populations in the area. The results are discussed in the context of the paradox of sex.  相似文献

The aphid, Aphis gossypii, is a primary pest of citrus, cotton, cucurbits and greenhouse‐grown vegetables in Turkey and throughout Europe. There is some previous empirical data suggesting that host‐adapted genotypes of this aphid exist which may in fact be host‐races. To determine if host races of A. gossypii are indeed present in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey, reciprocal host transfer experiments and life table analyses were performed with multiple asexual lineages (= clones) of the aphid collected from different hosts. The collection hosts included citrus, cucumber, eggplant, okra, sweet pepper and cotton. Aphid developmental times on the host from which the aphid was originally collected (= collection or natal host) were shorter (5.2–6.0 days) and had a higher intrinsic rate of population growth (rm = 0.25–0.44) than the 6.6–7.3 days required when the aphid was reared on a non‐original collection host (= non‐collection host or non‐natal host) and had rm = 0.03–0.30. Total immature mortality of the cotton clone, especially in the first nymphal stage, was high (51–100%) with low rm (0–0.03) on cucumber, citrus and sweet pepper. Aphid populations transferred from citrus, eggplant and okra to cotton (rm = 0.29–0.30) did not differ significantly in their performance from that of the cotton population on cotton (rm = 0.34), whereas that from sweet pepper and cucumber populations (rm = 0.22–0.24) were significantly lower. These data have allowed us to separate A. gossypii into two distinct biological groups: (a) a ‘generalist’ population obtained from cucumber, sweet pepper, citrus, eggplant and okra which exhibited statistically better development on cotton; versus (b) a population from cotton which, by comparison on reciprocal hosts, developed poorly on non‐natal hosts except on eggplant. Development of the cotton clone on cucumber and okra was not improved after four successive generations on the non‐natal host. The good development of A. gossypii from eggplant and cotton on these reciprocal hosts suggests that these particular clones were similar, if not identical, host races.  相似文献

Reproduction of attached large brown algae is known to occur only by sexual zygotes. Using microsatellites we show evolution of asexual reproduction in the bladder wrack promoting population persistence in the brackish water Baltic Sea (< 6 psu). Here a dwarf morph of Fucus vesiculosus is dominated by a single clone but clonal reproduction is also present in the common form of the species. We describe a possible mechanism for vegetative reproduction of attached algae, and conclude that clonality plays an important role in persistence and dispersal of these marginal populations, in which sexual reproduction is impaired by low salinity.  相似文献

Concepts of development are inevitably loaded with value judgements concerning what constitutes ‘proper’ social and economic organisation. Focusing on the cultural politics of development on Siquijor, an island in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, this paper explores these often tacit ideals. It considers one of the key idioms Siquijodnon use in explaining how development is brought about—cooperation—and some of its locally perceived opposites—‘crab mentality’, politicking and corruption—which contain powerful moral critiques of self and society. On Siquijor, local discourses of development have it that widespread poverty in the Philippines demonstrates a failing of Filipinos to live up to supposedly universal norms of ethical socio‐economic conduct. However, I argue that attention to local norms of moral economy reveal the ambivalence underlying these notions of development, particularly in relation to the roles of individualism and reciprocity in socio‐economic organisation.  相似文献

Courts of law in Melanesian countries, particularly in the aftermath of the colonial period, have attempted to accommodate ‘custom’. In Papua New Guinea they commonly hear land claims under terms of reference that acknowledge the wide variety of customs among the many ethno‐linguistic groups comprising the nation. A corollary of this liberalism is that, in theory, they admit ‘traditional evidence’ including legends and myths. Yet as courts of law they are required to apply some criteria of proof and to search for the ‘truth’ by examining the ‘facts’. A long‐running land case from Papua New Guinea and its aftermath raises interesting questions about what happens when oral history encounters these legal imperatives, and may help us appreciate why Melanesians often do not regard a court's decision as final.  相似文献

Life‐history theory postulates that evolution is constrained by trade‐offs (i.e., negative genetic correlations) among traits that contribute to fitness. However, in organisms with complex life cycles, trade‐offs may drastically differ between phases, putatively leading to different evolutionary trajectories. Here, we tested this possibility by examining changes in life‐history traits in an aphid species that alternates asexual and sexual reproduction in its life cycle. The quantitative genetics of reproductive and dispersal traits was studied in 23 lineages (genotypes) of the bird cherry‐oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi, during both the sexual and asexual phases, which were induced experimentally under specific environmental conditions. We found large and significant heritabilities (broad‐sense) for all traits and several negative genetic correlations between traits (trade‐offs), which are related to reproduction (i.e., numbers of the various sexual or asexual morphs) or dispersal (i.e., numbers of winged or wingless morphs). These results suggest that R. padi exhibits lineage specialization both in reproductive and dispersal strategies. In addition, we found important differences in the structure of genetic variance–covariance matrices ( G ) between phases. These differences were due to two large, negative genetic correlations detected during the asexual phase only: (1) between fecundity and age at maturity and (2) between the production of wingless and winged parthenogenetic females. We propose that this differential expression in genetic architecture results from a reallocation scheme during the asexual phase, when sexual morphs are not produced. We also found significant G × E interaction and nonsignificant genetic correlations across phases, indicating that genotypes could respond independently to selection in each phase. Our results reveal a rather unique situation in which the same population and even the same genotypes express different genetic (co)variation under different environmental conditions, driven by optimal resource allocation criteria.  相似文献

Activities of the detoxification enzymes esterase, glutathione S‐transferase, and of superoxide dismutase in aphids and aphid‐infested cereal leaves were assayed using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and a spectrophotometer to elucidate the enzymatic mechanisms of aphid resistance in cereal plants. A chlorosis‐eliciting Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), and non‐chlorosis‐eliciting bird cherry‐oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), and four cereals were used in this study. The four cereal genotypes were ‘Arapahoe’ (susceptible) and ‘Halt’ (resistant) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), ‘Morex’ (susceptible) barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), and ‘Border’ (resistant) oat (Avena sativa L.). Esterase isozymes differed between the two aphid species, although glutathione S‐transferase and superoxide dismutase did not. Esterase, glutathione S‐transferase, and superoxide dismutase activities in either aphid species were not affected by the level of resistance of a cereal to D. noxia. The assays of cereal leaf samples showed that D. noxia feeding elicited an increase in esterase activity in all four cereal genotypes, although R. padi feeding did not. The increase of esterase activity in cereals, however, was not correlated to aphid resistance in the cereals. The time‐series assays of aphid‐infested cereal leaves showed that D. noxia‐infested Morex barley had a significant increase in esterase activity on all sampling dates (3, 6, and 9 days) in comparison with either uninfested or R. padi‐infested barley. No difference in glutathione S‐transferase activity was detected among either aphid infestations or sampling dates. The electrophoretic assays, however, revealed that aphid feeding elicited a significant increase in superoxide dismutase activity, which served as the control of glutathione S‐transferase activity assays. The increase in esterase and superoxide dismutase activities suggested that D. noxia feeding imposes not only toxic, but also oxidative stresses on the cereals. The ramification of using these enzyme activity data to understand the etiology of D. noxia‐elicited chlorosis is discussed.  相似文献

The use of crop varieties resistant or tolerant to insect pests or other stress factors is one approach in non‐chemical crop‐protection. Knowledge of the biochemical and molecular background of insect–plant interactions is a prerequisite for optimizing breeding for resistance. However, the resistance genes involved in plant–aphid interactions have so far only been identified and characterized in very few plant species. Our work aims to elucidate the molecular and biochemical mechanisms involved in resistance of apple trees, Malus domestica L. (Rosaceae), against its primary aphid pest, the rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini) (Homoptera: Aphididae), which is considered a serious economic pest of apple. Gene expression in both resistant and susceptible apple cultivars after infestation with rosy apple aphids was investigated by employing the cDNA‐AFLP method (cDNA–Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism). From approximately 12 500 cDNA fragments detected on polyacrylamide gels, 21 bands were apparently up‐ or down‐regulated only in the resistant cultivar ‘Florina’ after aphid infestation compared to the susceptible cultivar ‘Topaz’ and/or mechanically wounded or non‐infested leaves. These fragments were cloned, sequenced, and the pattern of gene expression for six fragments was subsequently verified by virtual Northern blots. Sequence comparisons of these fragments to GenBank accessions revealed homologies to already known genes, most of them isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana L. Among them, a putative RNase‐L‐inhibitor‐like protein, a pectinacetylesterase, an inositol‐phosphatase‐like protein, a precursor of the large chain of the ribulose‐1,5‐biphosphate‐carboxylase, and defence‐related genes such as a vacuolar H(+)‐ATPase subunit‐like protein and an ADP‐ribosylating enzyme were identified. The results are discussed in relation to a putative role of these genes in conferring aphid resistance in apple trees.  相似文献

A major problem in evolutionary theory is to explain the widespread occurrence of sexual recombination. This is particularly difficult in anisogamous species where the familiar ‘two-fold cost of sex’ is encountered. Another cost has recently been identified: that fusion of gametes allows intracellular parasites or deleterious ‘selfish’ genomes to invade a population. These costs of anisogamy and the ability of cytoplasmic agents to invade a sexual population are quantified, allowing the costs and consequences of different modes of reproduction to be compared. It is found that the costs of selfish elements are likely to be very high and, in particular, that isogamous sexual reproduction (the putative ‘primitive’ form) is not cost-free, but incurs a fitness reduction of the order of 90%; thus a large selective disadvantage occurs in the initial evolution of sex which is ignored in standard analysis. Even once anisogamy has evolved, the low levels of ‘paternal leakage’ observed in many extant organisms may allow selfish cytoplasmic elements to spread, resulting in moderate to large decreases in host population fitness. However, much of the cost of selfish elements is avoided in sexual lifecycles with a large number of asexual cellular divisions between sexual reproduction: this greatly impedes the spread of selfish agents and reduces the fitness loss attributable to selfish elements.  相似文献
