Many living species of golden moles (Chrysochloridae) have greatly enlarged middle ear ossicles, believed to be used in the detection of ground vibrations through inertial bone conduction. Other unusual features of chrysochlorids include internally coupled middle ear cavities and the loss of the tensor tympani muscle. Our understanding of the evolutionary history of these characteristics has been limited by the paucity of fossil evidence. In this article, we describe for the first time the exquisitely preserved middle and inner ears of Namachloris arenatans from the Palaeogene of Namibia, visualised using computed tomography, as well as ossicles attributed to this species. We compare the auditory region of this fossil golden mole, which evidently did not possess a hypertrophied malleus, to those of three extant species with similarly sized ear ossicles, Amblysomus hottentotus, Calcochloris obtusirostris, and Huetia leucorhinus. The auditory region of Namachloris shares many common features with the living species, including a pneumatized, trabeculated basicranium and lateral skull wall, arteries and nerves of the middle ear contained in bony tubes, a highly coiled cochlea, a secondary crus commune, and no identifiable canaliculus cochleae for the perilymphatic duct. However, Namachloris differs from extant golden moles in the apparent absence of a basicranial intercommunication between the right and left ears, the possession of a tensor tympani muscle and aspects of ossicular morphology. One Namachloris skull showed what may be pneumatization of some of the dorsal cranial bones, extending right around the brain. Although the ossicles are small in absolute terms, one of the Huetia leucorhinus specimens had a more prominent malleus head than the other. This potentially represents a previously unrecognised subspecific difference.  相似文献

What did Morganucodon hear?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The structure of the middle and inner ear of Morganucodon , one of the oldest known mammals, is reviewed and compared to the structure of the ears of extant mammals, reptiles and birds with known auditory capabilities. Specifically, allometric relationships between ear dimensions (basilar-membrane length, tympanic-membrane area and stapes-footplate area) and specific features of the audiogram are defined in extant ears. These relationships are then used to make several predictions of auditory function in Morganucodon. The results point out that the ear structures of Morganucodon–Art similar in dimensions to ear structures in both extant small mammals–with predominantly high-frequency (10 kHz) auditory capabilities, and reptiles and birds- with better low and middle-frequency hearing (< 5 kHz). Although the allometric analysis cannot by itself determine whether Morganucodon heard more like present-day small mammals, or birds and reptiles, the apparent stiffness of the Morganucodon middle ear is both more consistent with the high-frequency mammalian middle ear and would act to decrease the sensitivity of a bird-reptile middle ear to low-frequency sound. Several likely hearing scenarios for Morganucodon are defined, including a scenario in which these animals had ears like those of modern small mammals that are selectively sensitive to high-frequency sounds, and a second scenario in which the Morganucodon ear was moderately sensitive to sounds of a narrow middle-frequency range (5–7 kHz) and relatively insensitive to sounds of higher or lower frequency. The evidence needed to substantiate either scenario includes some objective measure of the stiffness of the Morganucodon ossicular system, while a key datum needed to distinguish between the two hypotheses includes confirmation of the presence or absence of a cochlear lamina in the Morganucodon inner ear.  相似文献

Tympanometry was used to provide evidence of middle ear effusions in a prospective study of middle ear disease in 264 children aged 3 months to 6 years in general practice. Adequate measurements on both ears were obtained in 220 children, of whom 68 (31%) had evidence of middle ear effusion in one ear (29 children) or both ears (39 children) at entry to the study. In 28 (42%) of the 68 children persistence of the tympanometric findings was recorded for at least three months. Children of European descent were more likely to have evidence of middle ear effusion at the initial examination compared with African and West Indian children, as were those children whose siblings had a positive history of otitis media compared with those whose siblings had no such history. Children under 3 years were more likely to have evidence of an effusion than older children. Middle ear effusion as shown by tympanometry was not associated with a previous history of otitis media in the child but was associated with recent symptoms of respiratory infection or otalgia. A previous consultation for otitis media was, however, strongly associated with a greater likelihood of a consultation for otitis media during the follow up period. Comparing evidence of effusion by tympanometry with that by pneumatic otoscopy showed that using the appearance of the eardrum alone the sensitivity of otoscopy was 55%; the addition of mobility improved the sensitivity to 76% with little reduction in specificity. Further studies on populations using tympanometry are needed to determine the natural history, aetiology, and indications for referring children with middle ear effusion.  相似文献

The middle ear allows animals to hear while moving in an aerial medium. It is composed of a cavity harbouring a chain of three ossicles that transmit vibrations produced by airborne sound in the tympanic membrane into the inner ear, where they are converted into neural impulses. The middle ear develops in the branchial arches, and this requires sequential interactions between the epithelia and the underlying mesenchyme. Gene-inactivation experiments have identified genes required for the formation of different middle ear components. Some encode for signalling molecules, including Endothelin1 and Fgf8, probable mediators of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. Other genes, including Eya1, Prx1, Hoxa1, Hoxa2, Dlx1, Dlx2, Dlx5, and Gsc, are most likely involved in patterning and morphogenetic processes in the neural crest-derived mesenchyme. Mechanisms controlling formation of a functional tympanic membrane are also discussed. Basically, the tympanic ring, which serves as support for the tympanic membrane, directs invagination of the first pharyngeal cleft ectoderm to form the external acoustic meatus (EAM), which provides the outer layer of the membrane. Gsc and Prx1 are essential for tympanic ring development. While invaginating, the EAM controls skeletogenesis in the underlying mesenchyme to form the manubrium of the malleus, the link between the membrane and the middle ear ossicles.  相似文献

The middle ear structures of eight species of mole in the family Talpidae (Mammalia: Eulipotyphla) were studied under light and electron microscopy. Neurotrichus, Parascalops, and Condylura have a simple middle ear cavity with a loose ectotympanic bone, ossicles of a "microtype" morphology, and they retain a small tensor tympani muscle. These characteristics are ancestral for talpid moles. Talpa, Scalopus, Scapanus, and Parascaptor species, on the other hand, have a looser articulation between malleus and ectotympanic bone and a reduced or absent orbicular apophysis. These species lack a tensor tympani muscle, possess complete bullae, and extensions of the middle ear cavity pneumatize the surrounding basicranial bones. The two middle ear cavities communicate in Talpa, Scapanus, and Parascaptor species. Parascaptor has a hypertrophied malleus, a feature shared with Scaptochirus but not found in any other talpid genus. Differences in middle ear morphology within members of the Talpidae are correlated with lifestyle. The species with middle ears closer to the ancestral type spend more time above ground, where they will be exposed to high-frequency sound: their middle ears appear suited for transmission of high frequencies. The species with derived middle ear morphologies are more exclusively subterranean. Some of the derived features of their middle ears potentially improve low-frequency hearing, while others may reduce the transmission of bone-conducted noise. By contrast, the unusual middle ear apparatus of Parascaptor, which exhibits striking similarities to that of golden moles, probably augments seismic sensitivity by inertial bone conduction.  相似文献

Mucins are important glycoproteins in the mucociliary transport system of the middle ear and Eustachian tube. Little is known about mucin expression within this system under physiological and pathological conditions. This study demonstrated the expression of MUC5B, MUC5AC, MUC4, and MUC1 in the human Eustachian tube, whereas only MUC5B mucin expression was demonstrated in noninflamed middle ears. MUC5B and MUC4 mucin genes were upregulated 4.2- and 6-fold, respectively, in middle ears with chronic otitis media (COM) or mucoid otitis media (MOM). This upregulation of mucin genes was accompanied by an increase of MUC5B- and MUC4-producing cells in the middle ear mucosa. Electron microscopy of the secretions from COM and MOM showed the presence of chainlike polymeric mucin. These data indicate that the epithelium of the middle ear and Eustachian tube expresses distinct mucin profiles and that MUC5B and MUC4 mucins are highly produced and secreted in the diseased middle ear. These mucins may form thick mucous effusion in the middle ear cavity and compromise the function of the middle ear.  相似文献

The mammalian inner ear comprises the cochleovestibular labyrinth, derived from the ectodermal otic placode, and the encasing bony labyrinth of the temporal bone. Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions are thought to control inner ear development, but the modes and the molecules involved are largely unresolved. We show here that, during the precartilage and cartilage stages, Fgf9 is expressed in specific nonsensory domains of the otic epithelium and its receptors, Fgfr1(IIIc) and Fgfr2(IIIc), widely in the surrounding mesenchyme. To address the role of Fgf9 signaling, we analyzed the inner ears of mice homozygous for Fgf9 null alleles. Fgf9 inactivation leads to a hypoplastic vestibular component of the otic capsule and to the absence of the epithelial semicircular ducts. Reduced proliferation of the prechondrogenic mesenchyme was found to underlie capsular hypoplasticity. Semicircular duct development is blocked at the initial stages, since fusion plates do not form. Our results show that the mesenchyme directs fusion plate formation and they give direct evidence for the existence of reciprocal epithelial-mesenchymal interactions in the developing inner ear. In addition to the vestibule, in the cochlea, Fgf9 mutation caused defects in the interactions between the Reissner's membrane and the mesenchymal cells, leading to a malformed scala vestibuli. Together, these data show that Fgf9 signaling is required for inner ear morphogenesis.  相似文献

Temporal bone computed tomography (CT) was used to examine 37 patients aged 2 to 55 years who had exudative otitis media; in 27 patients of them, a pathological process was bilateral. An analysis of 58 temporal bone CT scans identified the CT signs of chronic exudative otitis media. These included a partial or complete block of the osseous foramen of the auditory tube; impaired pneumatization of the tympanic cavity, mastoid process fenestrae, and antrum; pathological drawing-in of the tympanic membrane. The preservation of the auditory ossicles and the absence of destructive changes in the walls of the cavities of the middle ear were observed in most cases. Repeated temporal bone CT study was performed in 10 patients (14 temporal bones) in different periods (from 2 months to 3 years) after surgery. The results of tympanostomy were visually assessed. These included recovered pneumatization of middle ear cavities (7 temporal bones), a cicatricial process in the tympanic cavity (5 temporal bones), recurrence of the CT manifestations of exudative otitis media (2 temporal bones).  相似文献

Co-regulation Of ear growth and internode elongation in corn   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ear is the harvest part of corn (Zea mays L.) and we are interested in studying its growth and development in our effort in corn yield improvement. In our current study, we examined the relationship between ear growth and internode characteristics using different approaches. Correlations between stem growth rate and number of ears per plant (prolificacy) were assessed among several genotypes. Internode elongation of 2 genotypes was modified by plant hormones and by population density manipulations. Among the 7 genotypes examined that have different prolificacy levels, there was a general correlation of slower stem elongation at middle growth stages and larger ear number. When the internode elongation was enhanced by application of gibberellic acid (GA), ear growth was suppressed; and when a GA synthesis inhibitor uniconazole was applied at early stages, internode length was reduced and ear growth was promoted in terms of both ear size and visible ear number at silking stage. Higher population density caused longer internodes and fewer ears per plant and the effect of lower density was the opposite. Our results suggested that internode elongation in the middle section of corn plants was linked to suppression of ear development in corn.  相似文献

Early tetrapods faced an auditory challenge from the impedance mismatch between air and tissue in the transition from aquatic to terrestrial lifestyles during the Early Carboniferous (350 Ma). Consequently, tetrapods may have been deaf to airborne sounds for up to 100 Myr until tympanic middle ears evolved during the Triassic. The middle ear morphology of recent urodeles is similar to that of early ‘lepospondyl’ microsaur tetrapods, and experimental studies on their hearing capabilities are therefore useful to understand the evolutionary and functional drivers behind the shift from aquatic to aerial hearing in early tetrapods. Here, we combine imaging techniques with neurophysiological measurements to resolve how the change from aquatic larvae to terrestrial adult affects the ear morphology and sensory capabilities of salamanders. We show that air-induced pressure detection enhances underwater hearing sensitivity of salamanders at frequencies above 120 Hz, and that both terrestrial adults and fully aquatic juvenile salamanders can detect airborne sound. Collectively, these findings suggest that early atympanic tetrapods may have been pre-equipped to aerial hearing and are able to hear airborne sound better than fish on land. When selected for, this rudimentary hearing could have led to the evolution of tympanic middle ears.  相似文献

Decreased mobility of the human eardrum, the tympanic membrane (TM), is an essential indicator of a prevalent middle ear infection. The current diagnostic method to assess TM mobility is via pneumatic otoscopy, which provides subjective and qualitative information of subtle motion. In this study, a handheld spectral-domain pneumatic optical coherence tomography system was developed to simultaneously measure the displacement of the TM, air pressure inputs applied to a sealed ear canal, and to perform digital pneumatic otoscopy. A novel approach based on quantitative parameters is presented to characterize spatial and temporal variations of the dynamic TM motion. Furthermore, the TM motions of normal middle ears are compared with those of ears with middle ear infections. The capability of noninvasively measuring the rapid motion of the TM is beneficial to understand the complex dynamics of the human TM, and can ultimately lead to improved diagnosis and management of middle ear infections.  相似文献

Cytokinin, auxin and gibberellin-like substances were bio-assayed in extracts from developing ears of wheat plants grown in various conditions. Changes in cytokinin activity along the ears may be related to the earlier flowering in the middle of the ear. Ears on the main stems of plants from which all the tillers had been removed contained less cytokinin than the main-stem ears of normal tillered plants. When grain development was stopped by preventing fertilization of the ovules the ear contained more cytokinin than normal ears. With de-tillered plants, removing flag leaves before anthesis increased cytokinin, gibberellin and auxin in the ears; later removal of flag leaves did not affect cytokinin but decreased gibberellin in the ears. Conversely, removing ears before anthesis did not affect cytokinin or auxin in the flag leaves, but their gibberellin was less than that of flag leaves on intact plants. Treatment of wheat ears with zeatin did not affect grain weight or number per ear which supports the conclusion that the growth substances in the ear may be adequate for normal grain growth.  相似文献

Background: Previous studies have shown that in utero exposure of the mouse embryo to high doses of all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA) produces defects of the developing inner ear and its surrounding cartilaginous capsule, while exposure of cultured periotic mesenchyme plus otic epithelium to high doses of exogenous atRA results in an inhibition of otic capsule chondrogenesis. Methods: In this study, we examine the effects of atRA exposure on the endogenous expression of transforming growth factor-beta(1) (TGF-beta(1)), a signaling molecule that mediates the epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that guide the development of the capsule of the inner ear. Results: Our results demonstrate a marked reduction in immunostaining for TGF-beta(1) in the periotic mesenchyme of atRA-exposed embryos of age E10.5 and E12 days in comparison with control specimens. Consistent with these in vivo findings, high-density cultures of E10.5 periotic mesenchyme plus otic epithelium, treated with doses of atRA that suppress chondrogenesis, showed significantly decreased levels of TGF-beta(1), as compared with TGF-beta(1) levels in untreated control cultures. Furthermore, we demonstrate a rescue of cultured periotic mesenchyme plus otic epithelium from atRA-induced chondrogenic suppression by supplementation of cultures with excess TGF-beta(1). Conclusions: Our results support the hypothesis that TGF-beta(1) plays a role in mechanisms of atRA teratogenicity during inner ear development.  相似文献

Otitis media (OM) is a polymicrobial disease wherein prior or concurrent infection with an upper respiratory tract virus plays an essential role, predisposing the middle ear to bacterial invasion. In episodes of acute bacterial OM, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most commonly isolated virus and thus serves as an important co-pathogen. Of the predominant bacterial agents of OM, the pathogenesis of disease due to Moraxella catarrhalis is the least well understood. Rigorous study of M. catarrhalis in the context of OM has been significantly hindered by lack of an animal model. To bridge this gap, we assessed whether co-infection of chinchillas with M. catarrhalis and RSV would facilitate ascension of M. catarrhalis from the nasopharynx into the middle ear. Chinchillas were challenged intranasally with M. catarrhalis followed 48 hours later by intranasal challenge with RSV. Within 7 days, 100% of nasopharynges were colonized with M. catarrhalis and homogenates of middle ear mucosa were also culture-positive. Moreover, within the middle ear space, the mucosa exhibited hemorrhagic foci, and a small volume of serosanguinous effusion was present in one of six ears. To improve upon this model, and based on epidemiologic data, nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) was included as an additional bacterial co-pathogen via intranasal administration four days before M. catarrhalis challenge. With this latter protocol, M. catarrhalis was cultured from the nasopharynx and middle ear homogenates of a maximum of 88% and 79% animals, respectively, for up to 17 days after intranasal challenge with M. catarrhalis. Additionally, hemorrhagic foci were observed in 79% of middle ears upon sacrifice. Thus, these data demonstrated that co-infection with RSV and NTHI predisposed to M. catarrhalis-induced ascending experimental OM. This model can be used both in studies of pathogenesis as well as to investigate strategies to prevent or treat OM due to M. catarrhalis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To assess the contribution of passive exposure to tobacco smoke to the development of middle ear underpressure and effusion. DESIGN--Cross sectional observational study. SETTING--One third of the primary schools in Edinburgh. SUBJECTS--892 Children aged 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 were examined, and satisfactory tympanograms were obtained in 872. Results of assay of salivary cotinine concentrations were available for 770 children, and satisfactory tympanograms were available for 736 of these. END POINT--Correlation of the prevalence of middle ear underpressure and effusion with concentrations of the marker of nicotine, cotinine, in the saliva of the children. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS--Middle ear pressure and compliance were measured in both ears by impedance tympanometry. Salivary cotinine concentrations were assayed by gas-liquid chromatography. Cotinine concentrations increased with the number of smokers in the household. Girls had higher concentrations than boys, and children living in rented housing had higher concentrations than those living in housing owned by their parents. There was a trend towards more abnormal tympanometric findings with increasing cotinine concentration, the odds ratio for a doubling of the cotinine concentration being 1.14 (95% confidence interval 1.03 to 1.27). After adjustment for the sex of the child and housing tenure the odds ratio for a doubling of the cotinine concentration was 1.13 (1.00 to 1.28). CONCLUSIONS--The results of this study are consistent with those of case-control studies of children attending for an operation to relieve middle ear effusion. They indicate that the disease should be added to the list of recognised hazards associated with passive smoking. About one third of the cases of middle ear effusion in this study were statistically attributable to exposure to tobacco smoke.  相似文献

Development of the cartilaginous capsule of the inner ear is dependent on interactions between otic epithelium and its surrounding periotic mesenchyme. During these tissue interactions, factors endogenous to the otic epithelium influence the differentiation of the underlying periotic mesenchyme to form a chondrified otic capsule. We report the localization of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) protein and expression of the Shh gene in the tissues of the developing mouse inner ear. We demonstrate in cultures of periotic mesenchyme that Shh alone cannot initiate otic capsule chondrogenesis. However, when Shh is added to cultured periotic mesenchyme either in combination with otic epithelium or otic epithelial-derived fibroblast growth factor (FGF2), a significant enhancement of chondrogenesis occurs. Addition of Shh antisense oligonucleotide (AS) to cultured periotic mesenchyme with added otic epithelium decreases levels of endogenous Shh and suppresses the chondrogenic response of the mesenchyme cells, while supplementation of Shh AS-treated cultures with Shh rescues cultures from chondrogenic inhibition. We demonstrate that inactivation of Shh by targeted mutation produces anomalies in the developing inner ear and its surrounding capsule. Our results support a role for Shh as a regulator of otic capsule formation and inner ear development during mammalian embryogenesis.  相似文献

Summary To conduct SEM studies on epithelium containing mucus-producing cells it is essential to remove the mucus which normally obscures the epithelial surface. This study presents a method which effectively removes the covering layer of mucus in the rat middle ear. Healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were decapitated and the middle ears dissected free. Incubation and agitation of the middle ear specimens in hyaluronidase (50 IE ml–1) and/or glucosidase (8%) removed the mucus from the middle ear cavity without altering the surface structures. It was also revealed that substances such as polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) (used to increase the colloid osmotic pressure of, e.g., the fixative solution) must be omitted when preparing ciliated specimens for SEM.  相似文献

Cetacean middle ears are unique among mammals in that they have an elongated tympanic membrane, a greatly reduced manubrium mallei, and an incudal crus longum that is shorter than the crus breve. Elongation of the tympanic membrane and reduction of the manubrium is thought to be related to an evolutionary rotation of the incus and malleus out of the plane of the tympanic membrane. We examined if rotation also occurs during ontogeny by comparing the middle ears of two species of dolphins (Delphinus delphis, Stenella attenuata) at different stages of development. We observed that: the incus has the body and crural proportions as in terrestrial mammals early in development; the incudomallear complex rotates approximately 90 degrees following ossification; the tympanic membrane is not elongated until relatively late in development. Therefore, some of the unique characteristics of the cetacean middle ear develop as modifications of an initially terrestrial-like morphology.  相似文献

The change in middle ear pressure while breathing gas mixtures containing N(2)O was studied in four monkeys. At each of three experimental sessions, monkeys were anesthetized, acclimated for 60 min, breathed with room air for 60 min, and then breathed with 5, 10, or 20% N(2)O for 60 min. Middle ear pressure, rectal temperature, and vital signs were recorded throughout. The time constant for blood-middle ear N(2)O exchange was calculated from these data. Middle ear pressure decreased during acclimation, was stable during air breathing, and increased during N(2)O breathing. The rate of pressure change was similar for both ears of each animal and was directly related to N(2)O percent. The calculated time constant ranged from 0.003 to 0.008 min(-1) across animals but was not different for a given ear across sessions. These results show that breathing gas mixtures containing N(2)O causes predictable and quantifiable increases in middle ear pressure.  相似文献
