In a 6-week study of the social behavior of wild Sulawesi crested black macaques (Macaca nigra), we found a linear and transitive dominance hierarchy among the six adult males in one social group. Dominance rank, as determined by the direction of supplantations, correlated strongly with percentage of time near more than four neighbors, frequency of grooming received from adult females, and percentage of time with an adult female as nearest neighbor. These results suggest that high-ranking males are socially attractive. Adult females sexually solicited high-ranking males more often than low-ranking males, but frequency of copulation was not correlated with dominance rank. Frequency and intensity of aggression between males are strongly correlated with rank distance, but aggression toward females was greatest for mid-ranking males. Males of all rank displayed significantly more aggression toward sexually receptive females than toward females in other estrous states. These data indicate that male Sulawesi crested black macaques display a social organization similar to that reported for multimale groups in other macaque species rather than the egalitarian social organization described for female Sulawesi macaques.  相似文献

Differences in the relative social dominance of wild, hybrid and domestic strains of Norway rats are observed in mixed groups (twelve animals each) housed in a large room for 13 consecutive days. Domestic subjects are dominant to wild rats in both spontaneous and competitive interactions. Hybrids are intermediate. Explanations offered for the superior dominance of the domestic strain included: (a) the lack of social inhibitions displayed by domestic rats as reflected in frequent play-motivated interactions (‘bully effect’), and (b) the larger body size of the domestic subjects. Domestic subjects are most active and interacted most frequently. Dominance behaviour does not influence nest box utilization. Dominance in spontaneous and competitive interactions is not correlated suggesting that in the rat social dominance is not a unidimensional trait.  相似文献

Summary The nest locations of two ant species in the Colorado Desert are intraspecifically overdispersed. Intraspecific overdispersion has been thought to represent strong intraspecific competition. Here we consider this hypothesis along with three competing hypotheses: microhabitat selection by foundress queens, predation on foundress queens, and predation on established colonies. To test these hypotheses five types of data were collected: (1) the forager population sizes of Veromessor pergandei and Pogonomyrmex californicus, (2) the response of the territory use of V. pergandei to varying levels of food, (3) the encounter rates of conspecifics and other ant species to foundress queens artificially placed near and far from conspecific colonies, (4) predation on colonies as a function of colony spacing, and (5) the relationship between the plant microhabitat at the nest and colony spacing. The results show that established colonies have no apparent selectivity for a particular type of plant microhabitat nor do foundress queens show avoidance or attraction toward conspecifics. V. pergandei workers show only a slight ability to find V. pergandei queens that are artificially placed near their entrances. Certain spiders are the most common ant predators on our study area. Direct observations on spiders indicate that colonies with closer neighbors are not prone to a higher risk of predation. In addition, the estimates of the death rate of workers from a mark-recapture technique indicate that colonies with closer neighbors lose similar numbers of workers as compared to colonies with further neighbors. In favor of the competition hypothesis, the summed size of intraspecific nearest neighbor pairs are larger for colonies that are spaced further apart than those colonies that are spaced closer together. We also develop an index of foraging directionality for the column foraging species V. pergandei. Using this measure, we find that nearest neighbors tend to avoid foraging toward each other. The response of territory use to food levels was tested with experiments involving patches of cracked wheat. These experiments showed that patches away from nearest neighbors were found significantly sooner than patches toward nearest neighbors. The above five sets of data together suggest that resource competition and perhaps queen predation by established colonies account for the intraspecific spatial patterns of these species.  相似文献

Dominance behaviour and factors influencing dominance were investigated in small heterosexual and homosexual groups of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) in the laboratory. Straight line nip-right hierarchies were the most frequent type of dominance relationship. In heterosexual groups separate homosexual hierarchies were formed, and females were the more dominant sex. Dominant males performed significantly more reproductive behaviour than lower rank individuals. Agonistic behaviour appears early in young P. reticulata. Factors involved in determining dominance were size, sex and aggressiveness. Individual or role recognition or both may occur in this species. Advantages of dominance are discussed.  相似文献

We analysed 50 movie films of house sparrows (Passer domesticus) foraging on an experimental grid. The location and orientation of each bird was recorded; sex of the individual was determined in about two of every three cases. Results revealed the following: (1) Flock size exhibited a weak inverse relationship to ambient temperature, though aggression was rare in the experimental patch. (2) The frequency of males in foraging groups exceeded the frequency of males in the local population. (3) Within a given flock size, nearest neighbour distances did not differ significantly between male-male and male-female pairs. However, average nearest neighbour distance was inversely related to flock size. (4) Solitaries oriented away from safety and toward a source of disturbance. Orientation of an individual within a larger group was more variable than that of a solitary, and the orientation of nearest neighbours indicated a significant tendency to keep each other in view.  相似文献

In many primates, close social relationships are associated with lower stress, better health, and increased life span. However, individuals do not form bonds indiscriminately; rather, they focus on a few primary partners. This suggests that the identity of the partner may be as important as the bond itself. Although dominance and kinship have repeatedly emerged as salient predictors of female relationships, most of this research comes from species with multimale, multifemale groups and strict dominance hierarchies. Further, kinship was typically determined based on either behavior or on known mother–daughter relationships alone. To understand the generality of previous findings, we use behavioral and genetic sampling to examine whether dominance rank and/or genetic relatedness mediate female social bonds in geladas (Theropithecus gelada) living in the Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia. First, we found that, even though females in the same unit are closely related, female geladas still preferentially bond with the closest of these relatives. Second, females that were close kin formed the strongest bonds with females of similar rank to themselves. Finally, rank disparity predicted grooming rates but did not predict whether females were nearest neighbors. This suggests that, in contrast with data from other cercopithecines, spatial proximity among females may be less indicative of strong social bonds for geladas, a species that routinely exhibits a high degree of spatial overlap with extra-unit individuals. Together, these results highlight the importance of combining genetic data with detailed behavioral observations to help us understand how individuals choose and interact with social partners.  相似文献

Summary We present three lines of evidence which each suggest that intraspecific competition has significantly influenced the spacing patterns of Formica altipetens colonies. First, nearest-neighbor analysis of nest spacing patterns detected significant uniformity in six of eight plots. Second, there was a signifcant increase in the distance separating nearest neighbors as ant nest diameters increased. Third, ant nest density predicted substantial variation in the colony dispersion index, indicating the existence of a dispersion continuum at our study site.  相似文献

Hubel and Wiesel (1977) suggested that ocular dominance and orientation columns in the macaque monkey striate cortex might be bands of uniform width that intersected orthogonally. They pointed out that if this were the case, there would be an equal allocation of cells of different orientation preference to each eye and to each point in visual space. However, orientation and ocular dominance columns have a more complex structural organization than is implied by this model: for example, iso-orientation domains do not intersect ocular dominance stripes at right angles and the two columnar systems have different periodicities. This raises the question as to how well the striate cortex manages to allocate equal numbers of neurons of different orientation preference to each eye and to each region of visual space, a factor referred to here as coverage. This paper defines a measure of uniformity of coverage, c, and investigates its dependence on several different parameters of columnar organisation. Calculations were done first using a simplified one-dimensional model of orientation and ocular dominance columns and were then repeated using more realistic two-dimensional models, generated with the algorithms described in the preceding paper (Swindale 1991). Factors investigated include the relative periodicities of the two columnar systems, the size of the cortical point image, the width of orientation tuning curves, whether columns are spatially anisotropic or not, and the role of the structural relationships between columns described by Blasdel and Salama (1986). The results demonstrate that coverage is most uniform when orientation hypercolumns are about half the size of ocular dominance hypercolumns. Coverage is most uneven when the hypercolumns are the same size, unless they are related in the way described by Blasdel and Salama, in which case coverage gets only slightly worse as the size ratio (ori/od) increases above 0.5. The minimum diameter of cortical point image that ensures reasonably uniform coverage is about twice the size of an ocular dominance hypercolumn i.e. about 1.5–2.0 mm.  相似文献

 Schools of fish and flocks of birds are examples for groups of individuals moving in a highly organized way. Individuals adapt their orientation and speed to that of their (nearest) neighbors. Adaptation of orientation can also be found on the cellular and subcellular level and is called alignment. A model for alignment and movement is derived on the basis of reaction transport equations in one space dimension. Existence of solutions is shown and long time behavior of the system is described. The effect of schooling on the risk of predation is investigated. Then the model is generalized to two space dimensions and compared to other models for alignment which do not incorporate individual movement in space. Many animals generate long-distance vocalizations (“loud calls”) that have been hypothesized to mediate spatial interactions. Howls by mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata), specifically, are hypothesized to function in group spacing, but the mechanism by which this is accomplished remains unclear. In this study, I evaluated the role of naturally occurring howls in mediating mantled howler intergroup spatial interactions on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Multivariate analyses examined relationships between social and environmental contextual variables and the likelihood that a group would approach or avoid a neighboring group’s howl. Mantled howlers were more likely to approach howling neighbors when fruit and flower availability was limited. Relative dominance was also a highly significant predictor of approach, though the relationship ran contrary to expectations. Groups were more likely to approach howling neighbors higher in the established dominance hierarchy than those lower down, possibly reflecting priority access of more dominant groups to higher quality resources. Other variables tested, including numeric odds, vocalization intensity, infanticide risk, and location of the howling group, were not significant predictors of spatial response. These findings are consistent with the assertion that howls contain identifying information and highlight the importance of including contextual variables in multivariate analyses of spatial responses to loud calls. These results also indicate potential contrasts between observational and playback studies by suggesting that howl location may play a greater role in responses to simulated intruders than to known neighbor groups, and that relative dominance may provide a more salient measure of competitive ability than numeric odds among groups with interaction histories.  相似文献

Abstract Territoriality in the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is studied in the laboratory. In rectangular enclosures, male flies exhibit a lower tolerance (occupation of the same physical space) of same‐sex conspecifics than do females. In circular arenas, male flies show significantly higher levels of spatial separation among themselves (as determined from nearest neighbour analyses) than do females: males show a slight tendency towards a uniform distribution, whereas females exhibit a slight tendency towards clustering. The male spatial behaviour occurs during the photophase but not the scotophase, suggesting that visual cues are required for maintenance of inter‐individual spacing. No significant differences in male spacing behaviour occur between subjective day and subjective night in either constant dark or constant light conditions, suggesting that spatial patterning is not driven by a circadian rhythm.  相似文献

Aiming to explore the basis of heterosis in rapeseed, QTLs for yield and three yield component traits were mapped and the digenic interactions were detected in an F2 population derived from a cross between two elite rapeseed lines, SI-1300 and Eagle, in this study. Twenty-eight QTLs were detected for the four yield traits, with only two of them detected simultaneously in the Wuhan and Jingmen environments. Additive, partial dominance, dominance, and overdominance effects were all identified for the investigated traits. Dominance (including partial dominance) was shown by 55% of the QTLs, which suggests that dominance is a major genetic basis of heterosis in rapeseed. At the P ?? 0.01 level with 1000 random permutations, 108 and 104 significant digenic interactions were detected in Wuhan and Jingmen, respectively, for the four yield-related traits using all possible locus pairs of molecular markers. Digenic interactions, including additive by additive, additive by dominance, and dominance by dominance, were frequent and widespread in this population. In most cases (78.3%), the interactions occurred among marker loci for which significant effects were not detected by single-locus analysis. Some QTLs (57.1%) detected by single-locus analysis were involved in epistatic interactions. It was concluded that epistasis, along with dominance (including partial dominance), is responsible for the expression of heterosis in rapeseed.  相似文献

Abstract Dominance‐diversity curves have been previously constructed for a range of ecosystems around the world to illustrate the dominance of particular species and show how their relative abundances compare between communities separated in time or space. We investigate the usefulness of dominance‐diversity curves in rehabilitated areas to compare the floristic composition and abundance of “undisturbed” areas with disturbed areas, using bauxite mining rehabilitation in Western Australia as an example. Rehabilitated pits (11–13 years old) subjected to prescribed fire in autumn and spring were compared with unburned rehabilitated areas and the native jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest. Dominance diversity curves were constructed by ranking the log of the species density values from highest to lowest. Species were categorized according to a variety of functional responses: life form (trees, shrubs, subshrubs, and annuals), fire response syndrome (seeder or resprouter), nitrogen fixing capability, and origin (native or adventive). Exponential functions showed extremely good fits for all sites (r2 = 0.939–0.995). Dominance diversity graphs showed that after burning of rehabilitated areas, sites exhibited a more similar dominance‐diversity curve than before burning. This was emphasized in a classification (UPGMA) of the regression equations from the dominance‐diversity curves that showed that sites burned in spring were more similar to the native forest than sites burned in autumn. There was no significant segregation of the nitrogen‐fixing and species origin categories, although the life form and fire response groupings showed significant segregation along the dominance‐diversity curve. Resprouters tended to be over‐represented in the lower quartiles and under‐represented in the upper quartiles of post‐burn sites. It is suggested that using dominance‐diversity curves in the monitoring of rehabilitated areas may be a useful approach because it provides an easily interpretable visual representation of both species richness and abundance relationships and may be further utilized to emphasize categories of plants that are over‐ or under‐represented in rehabilitated areas. This will assist in the post‐rehabilitation management of these sites.  相似文献

We report in situ behavioural observations of presettlement schooling in Priacanthus tayenus off Coral Bay, Western Australia collected using pelagic Baited Remote Underwater stereo-Video systems. Two groups of fish (8 and 9 individuals) were observed that aggregated into a single school. Mean total length was 24.1 mm (12.5–30.2 mm). The fish swam at a mean speed of 8.5 cm s?1 in a group spacing themselves more or less evenly at a distance of around one body length from the nearest neighbour within the school. P. tayenus appeared to be sometimes associated with juveniles of other species. The results presented here add to the limited, but growing body of literature on the schooling behaviour of the early pelagic stages of demersal fishes.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchies have been widely used for describing the outcome of competitive interactions in an animal group. We present a procedure for estimating the linear dominance hierarchy. The procedure uses the statistical method of paired comparisons, assuming weak stochastic transitivity to model interactions within a linear dominance hierarchy. The linear dominance hierarchy is estimated using a maximum likelihood ranking procedure. This method allows unequal numbers of encounters between pairs and does not require all pairs to have observed encounters. The method is illustrated by application to behavioural data from a group of 10 baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis).  相似文献

Patterns of aggressive and affiliative behavior, such as counter aggression and reconciliation, are said to covary in the genus Macaca; this is referred to as the systematic variation hypothesis. These behavior patterns constitute a species dominance style. Van Schaik's [1989] socioecological model explains dominance style in macaques in terms of within- and between-group contest competition. Dominance style is also said to correlate with phylogeny in macaques. The present study was undertaken to examine phylogenetic and socioecological explanations of dominance style, as well as the systematic variation hypothesis. We collected data on counter aggression and reconciliation from a habituated group of Assamese macaques (Macaca assamensis) at the Tukeswari Temple in Assam, India. The proportion of agonistic episodes that involved counter aggression was relatively low. Counter aggression, however, occurred more often among males than among females, and it was most common when females initiated aggression against males. The conciliatory tendency for this group of Assamese macaques was 11.2%. The frequency of reconciliation was low for fights among males and for fights among females, but reconciliation was particularly rare for opposite-sexed opponents. Female social relationships were consistent with the systematic variation hypothesis, and suggest a despotic dominance style. A despotic dominance style in Assamese macaques weakens the correlation between dominance style and phylogeny in macaques, but it is not inconsistent with the socioecological model. Male-female relationships were not well explained by the despotic-egalitarian framework, and males may well have more tolerant social relationships than do females. Sex differences need to be considered when categorizing species according to dominance style.  相似文献

Very little is known about the spacing behaviour in social groups of domestic goats (Capra hircus) in the farm environment. In this experiment, we studied interindividual distances, movement patterns and activity budgets in pregnant goats housed at three different densities. Norwegian dairy goats were kept in stable social groups of six animals throughout pregnancy at 1, 2 or 3 m2 per individual and their spacing behaviours (i.e. distance travelled, nearest and furthest neighbour distance) and activity budgets (e.g. resting, feeding, social activities) were monitored. Observations were made in the first, second and last thirds of pregnancy in the mornings, at noon and in the afternoons of each of these phases (4.5 hours per observation period). The findings show that goats held at animal densities of 2 and 3 m2 moved longer distances when they had more space per animal and kept larger nearest and furthest neighbour distances when compared to the 1 m2 per animal density. Less feeding activity was observed at the high animal density compared to the medium and low density treatments. The phase of gestation also had an impact on almost all behavioural variables. Closer to parturition, animals moved further distances and the increase in nearest and furthest neighbour distance was more pronounced at the lower animal densities. During the last period of gestation, goats spent less time feeding and more on resting, social behaviours and engaging in other various activities. Our data suggest that more space per goat is needed for goats closer to parturition than in the early gestation phase. We concluded that in goats spacing behaviour is density-dependent and changes with stages of pregnancy and activities. Finally, the lower density allowed animals to express individual preferences regarding spacing behaviour which is important in ensuring good welfare in a farming situation.  相似文献

Dominance has been suggested as one of the genetic mechanisms explaining heterosis. However, using traditional quantitative genetic methods it is difficult to obtain accurate estimates of dominance effects. With the availability of dense SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) panels, we now have new opportunities for the detection and use of dominance at individual loci. Thus, the aim of this study was to detect additive and dominance effects on number of teats (NT), specifically to investigate the importance of dominance in a Landrace-based population of pigs. In total, 1,550 animals, genotyped for 32,911 SNPs, were used in single SNP analysis. SNPs with a significant genetic effect were tested for their mode of gene action being additive, dominant or a combination. In total, 21 SNPs were associated with NT, located in three regions with additive (SSC6, 7 and 12) and one region with dominant effects (SSC4). Estimates of additive effects ranged from 0.24 to 0.29 teats. The dominance effect of the QTL located on SSC4 was negative (−0.26 teats). The additive variance of the four QTLs together explained 7.37% of the total phenotypic variance. The dominance variance of the four QTLs together explained 1.82% of the total phenotypic variance, which corresponds to one-fourth of the variance explained by additive effects. The results suggest that dominance effects play a relevant role in the genetic architecture of NT. The QTL region on SSC7 contains the most promising candidate gene: VRTN. This gene has been suggested to be related to the number of vertebrae, a trait correlated with NT.  相似文献

A population of 33–35 pairs of Peregrine Falcon in álava (north Spain) was studied with the aim of assessing the habitat attributes that influence breeding density, habitat selection and breeding success. A strong relationship was found between density of the species in each UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) square of 10 × 10 km and cliff availability. Habitat selection was analysed by comparing 15 variables in 33 occupied and 25 unoccupied cliffs located at least 2 km from the nearest Peregrine pair. Significant differences were found in five variables: cliff dominance, distance to the nearest Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos nesting cliff, steepness and altitude (all showing larger values in occupied cliffs), and cliff orientation, with occupied cliffs facing preferably south and east. Orientation, dominance and distance to the nearest Golden Eagle pair, and the distance to the nearest Eagle Owl Bubo bubo nesting cliff, were included in a discriminant analysis which classified 82.76% of the cliffs correctly. The productivity of the studied population was 1.44 young/territorial pair (n = 45), and no consistent relationship was found between breeding success and habitat variables.  相似文献
