In a deciduous forest, foraging ants collect elaiosome-bearing seeds and carry them to their nests. Some of the seeds reach the nest and are concentrated there. Others may be dropped by ants during transport. The dropped seeds enter the soil seed pool. However, they might be repeatedly removed by other ant individuals and carried again in the direction of the nest. Rates of seed dropping and repeated removals must be known to evaluate the effect of ant workers on dispersal distance of seeds. The rate of seed dropping is predicted to depend on size of seeds and of elaiosomes, both of which vary among plant species, and on the size of the ant workers. Mark-recapture experiments were used to evaluate dropping rates of seeds of five myrmecochorous and diplochorous plants (Chelidonium majus L., Asarum europaeum L., Viola matutina Klok., V. mirabilis L., V. hirta L.) during their transport by the ant Formica polyctena Foerst. In the series of species A. europaeumV. hirtaV. mirabilisCh. majusV. matutina, the dropping rate increased. Small workers dropped seeds of A. europaeum more often than did large ones, while seeds of V. hirta were dropped by ants of different size classes with the same frequency. Across species, dropping rates of seeds were negatively correlated with the rate at which ants removed them from the depot. The number of seeds which reach the nests is the other important parameter of seed dispersal. This parameter depends on dropping rates: seeds with lower dropping rates have higher chances of being deposited in nests. Diplochores usually produce many small seeds, which are characterised by low removal rates and high dropping rates during transport by ants. Obligate myrmecochores produce rather few large seeds, which have high removal rates and low dropping rates. To analyse the significance of seed dropping in the dispersal distance of seeds, a computer simulation based on two factors [(i) seed number produced by a plant; (ii) dropping rate of seeds] is proposed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows ( Ammodramus caudacutus ) build ground nests, often with a closely-woven dome, in marshes that frequently flood during high tides. To test the hypothesis that domed nests help reduce the loss of eggs and chicks due to flooding or predation, we examined the characteristics and fate of 102 nests at sites along the coast of Connecticut. To test whether nest structure was tailored to suit microhabitat conditions, we also measured vegetation characteristics around nests. Finally, we conducted artificial nest-flooding experiments to determine whether removal of domes reduced egg retention during flooding. We found no significant effects of nest structure on breeding success or failure, and few significant correlations between nest structure and microhabitat. The height of nests above the ground, however, increased with vegetation height, supporting the hypothesis that nest construction is influenced by flooding, but not supporting the hypothesis that predation risk is important. Dome removal experiments showed that domes have a highly significant effect on the retention of eggs during flooding, suggesting that domes help eggs survive the regular tidal flooding of marshes.  相似文献

Many individual decisions are informed by direct comparison of the alternatives. In collective decisions, however, only certain group members may have the opportunity to compare options. Emigrating ant colonies (Temnothorax albipennis) show sophisticated nest-site choice, selecting superior sites even when they are nine times further away than the alternative. How do they do this? We used radio-frequency identification-tagged ants to monitor individual behaviour. Here we show for the first time that switching between nests during the decision process can influence nest choice without requiring direct comparison of nests. Ants finding the poor nest were likely to switch and find the good nest, whereas ants finding the good nest were more likely to stay committed to that nest. When ants switched quickly between the two nests, colonies chose the good nest. Switching by ants that had the opportunity to compare nests had little effect on nest choice. We suggest a new mechanism of collective nest choice: individuals respond to nest quality by the decision either to commit or to seek alternatives. Previously proposed mechanisms, recruitment latency and nest comparison, can be explained as side effects of this simple rule. Colony-level comparison and choice can emerge, without direct comparison by individuals.  相似文献

Post-dispersal seed removal by animals can lead to extensive seed loss and thus is an important factor in structuring plant communities. However, we know much less about post-dispersal seed predation than about other forms of herbivory. Mucilage plays many ecological roles in adaptation of plants to diverse environments; nevertheless, until now the role of mucilage in ant-mediated seed movement remains largely hypothetical. We studied the role of mucilage in seed removal of Artemisia sphaerocephala by ants in Mu Us Sandland in Inner Mongolia, China. Messor aciculatus was the most active seed predator of Artemisia sphaerocephala. Time to first ant collecting (T 1st) of wet intact seeds was longest and significantly different from that for dry intact seeds, wet demucilaged seeds, and dry demucilaged seeds; number of seeds removed to ant nests was lowest for wet intact seeds. After they were collected by ants, 5 % of wet intact seeds were dropped during transport. Our results indicate that seed mucilage of Artemisia sphaerocephala may play a significant role in post-dispersal seed removal by (1) making seeds less attractive to ants, thus resulting in a delay of collection time; (2) forming a strong bond to soil particles, making it difficult for ants to remove seeds; and (3) making seeds more likely to be dropped during transport, thereby allowing them to escape from predation even after collection by ants. This study demonstrates the importance of mucilage in reducing seed removal by ants and thus in anchoring seeds of desert plants in the vicinity of mother plants.  相似文献

The dynamic in Argentine ant colonies varies seasonally, influenced by biotic and abiotic factors. In winter the spatial range of the colony is contracted in large formations (winter nests) containing a large number of queens and workers. Winter nests are the clue to the species’ dispersion power and the invasion of new habitats. For this reason a yearly elimination of queens and workers in winter at the edge (front) of the invasion could be a useful tool for weakening the species’ dispersion and therefore limiting its establishment in new areas. Here, we determined the spatial dynamics of the Argentine ant nests during 1 year, and we assessed the invasion management by means of manual removal of winter nests for two consecutive winters, determining its effects during the following 3 years. We mapped nests found in 18 plots divided into two groups: extirpated (with removal of nests) and non-extirpated (control), along the fronts of three locations. Seasonal variation in the abundance of nests and workers, together with the two-year extirpation effects were evaluated. We found that colonies tended to follow an annual cycle of contraction and dispersion, with a decrease in the number of nests as we approached the invasion front. The extirpation was effective only in the front area, where it promoted smaller, less lasting and aggregated nests, as well as a decrease in the abundance of queens and workers. Nests also experienced a decrease during the two first winters but a recovery in the third, when no extirpation was done. Thus, a yearly perturbation should be performed to keep the expansion of the Argentine ant at a low rate, and to limit its establishment in new areas.  相似文献

Migration is adaptive if survival benefits are larger than costs of residency. Many aspects of bat migration ecology such as migratory costs, stopover site use and fidelity are largely unknown. Since many migrating bats are endangered, such information is urgently needed to promote conservation. We selected the migrating Leisler''s bat (Nyctalus leisleri) as model species and collected capture-recapture data in southern Switzerland year round during 6 years. We estimated seasonal survival and site fidelity with Cormack-Jolly-Seber models that accounted for the presence of transients fitted with Bayesian methods and assessed differences between sexes and seasons. Activity peaked in autumn and spring, whereas very few individuals were caught during summer. We hypothesize that the study site is a migratory stopover site used during fall and spring migration for most individuals, but there is also evidence for wintering. Additionally, we found strong clues for mating during fall. Summer survival that included two major migratory journeys was identical to winter survival in males and slightly higher in females, suggesting that the migratory journeys did not bear significant costs in terms of survival. Transience probability was in both seasons higher in males than in females. Our results suggest that, similarly to birds, Leisler''s bat also use stopover sites during migration with high site fidelity. In contrast to most birds, the stopover site was also used for mating and migratory costs in terms of survival seemed to be low. Transients'' analyses highlighted strong individual variation in site use which makes particularly challenging the study and modelling of their populations as well as their conservation.  相似文献

At study sites in Cambridgeshire, England, the percentage of reed warbler, Acrocephalus scirpaceus, nests parasitized by cuckoos, Cuculus canorus, in 2 years was 22·5% and 9·1%. The warblers rejected cuckoo eggs at 19% of parasitized nests. Parasitized clutches suffered less predation than unparasitized clutches, suggesting that the cuckoo itself was the major predator, plundering nests too advanced for parasitism so that the hosts would re-lay. The cuckoos laid a mimetic egg, parasitized nests in the afternoons during the host laying period, usually removed one host egg, laid a remarkably small egg and laid very quickly. Nests were experimentally parasitized with model eggs to study the significance of this procedure. Experiments showed that host discrimination selects for: (1) egg mimicry by cuckoos (poorer matching model eggs were more likely to be rejected); (2) parasitism during the laying period (mimetic eggs put in nests before host laying began were rejected); (3) afternoon laying (mimetic eggs were less likely to be accepted in the early morning than in the afternoon, when hosts were more often absent from the nest); (4) a small egg (large eggs, typical of non-parasitic cuckoos, were more likely to be rejected); (5) rapid laying (a stuffed cuckoo on the nest stimulated increased rejection of model eggs), and (6) sets a limit to host egg removal by cuckoos (if more than one or two are removed desertion may occur). Mimicry may also be selected for because it reduced the chance that second cuckoos can discriminate the first cuckoo's egg from the host's clutch. Predation did not select for mimicry; nests with a non-mimetic egg did not suffer greater predation than those with a mimetic egg. Host rejection of model eggs did not depend on: (1) stage of parasitism once host egg laying had begun (nevertheless cuckoos were more likely to lay early in the host laying period probably to increase the chance the cuckoo chick hatched); (2) removal of a host egg (however, this reduced the incidence of unhatched eggs so cuckoos may remove a host egg so as not to exceed the host incubation limit). There were two costs of rejection, an ‘ejection’ cost (own eggs ejected as well as the cuckoo egg) and, with mimetic eggs, a ‘recognition’ cost (own eggs ejected instead of the cuckoo egg). Reed warblers did not discriminate against unlike chicks (another species) and did not favour either a cuckoo chick or their own chicks when these were placed in two nests side by side. Possible reasons why the hosts discriminate against unlike eggs but not unlike chicks are discussed.  相似文献

Nest predation has been used to explain aspects of avian ecology ranging from nest site selection to population declines. Many arguments rely on specific assumptions regarding how predators find nests, yet these predatory mechanisms remain largely untested. Here we combine artificial nest experiments with behavioural observations of individual red squirrels Tamiasciurus hudsonicus to differentiate between two common hypotheses: predation is incidental versus learned. Specifically, we tested: 1) whether nest survival could be explained solely by a squirrel's activity patterns or habitat use, as predicted if predation was incidental; or 2) if predation increased as a squirrel gained experience preying on a nest, as predicted if predation was learned. We also monitored squirrel activity after predation to test for evidence of two search mechanisms: area‐restricted searching and use of microhabitat search images. Contrary to incidental predation and in support of learning, squirrels did not find nests faster in areas with high use (e.g. forest edges). Instead, survival of artificial nests was strongly related to a squirrel's prior experience preying on artificial nests. Experience reduced nest survival times by over half and increased predation rates by 150–200%. Squirrels returned to and doubled their activity at the site of a previously preyed on nest. However, neither area‐restricted searching nor microhabitat search images can explain how squirrels located artificial nests more readily with experience. Instead, squirrels likely used cues associated with the nests or eggs themselves. Learning implies that squirrels could be increasingly effective predators as the density or profitability of nests increases. Our results add support to the view that nest predation is complex and broadly influenced (e.g. by predator experience, motivation), and is unlikely to be predicted consistently by simple relationships with predator activity, abundance or habitat.  相似文献

An attempt was made to describe the principle signals involved in the recognition of nymphs by Tapinoma workers. A behavioural measure, the way and extent to which workers transported different objects presented to them, was used to quantify this relationship. These objects were homo- or heterospecific nymphs, or different baits. Two types of test were generally used in such studies: retrieval — bringing back objects to the nest, and removal – transport of objects during displacement of the nest. The second type of test was used in this study. The results, in decreasing order of recognition were as follows. Tapinoma workers transport homospecific and Tetramorium nymphs at 100%. The smaller nymphs of Solenopsis impregnated with Tapinoma extract were transported at 77%. The nymphs of Solenopsis with their own odour were transported at 21%, paper impregnated. with Tapinoma extract at 12%, while ‘odourless’ Tapinoma nymphs and neutral paper were not transported at all. These results imply an intervention of both physical and chemical factors, the threshold significance of signals and their global implication depending on the test situation and its disturbing effect. They also depend on the nature of the different objects presented in combination; Tapinoma workers transport heterospecific brood much less readily in the presence of their own brood. The attractiveness of nymphs is not an all or none phenomenon. In a study of the adoption of homospecific nymphs from another nest, this gradation was apparent in the distribution of nymphs in the nest and their order of transport during removal tests; certain nymphs were left aside in the first 3 days of presentation, were amongst the last to be transported during removal, and then by the most active workers. The perception of the brood by the workers may thus occur at different levels: (1) Perception of a factor that may be vaguely defined as ‘transportable object’ in a removal test — with objects of type ‘nymph’ for example; (2) perception of the species; (3) perception of the colony. The worker ant during its life acquires a certain ‘knowledge’ of its own brood through familiarization, which expresses itself in terms of specific patterns of care for the brood, but this attention, although given preferentially to the brood, is not exclusive under stress.  相似文献

We studied the ant-feeding behavior of Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) through direct observation in the Ashio area of Japan. We recorded the bears’ “time foraging per ant nest” (TPN), documented the seasonal occurrence of ants in their scats, estimated phenological changes in caste composition of the nests of two abundant ant species (Lasius flavus and L. hayashi), and calculated the nutritional composition of queens, males, workers, queen pupae, and non-queen pupae of both species. We addressed two main hypotheses: (1) ant-nest phenology, especially the availability of pupae, affects bears’ myrmecophagy level; and (2) TPN changes according to the caste composition of ant nests. Bears in the Ashio area consumed more ants than in previous studies elsewhere in Japan, with consumption peaking in early July. The availability of pupae may trigger ant feeding by bears. And, because queen pupae were heavier than members of other castes, calories per individual were higher. TPN varied during the study period (late June–early August). There was a negative relationship between frequency of occurrence of pupae in ant nests and TPN; because pupae cannot move by themselves, bears could consume them effectively and quickly. Thus, bears may change their ant-foraging behavior (especially TPN) based on ant nest composition.  相似文献

This study reports that Corsican blue tit (Parus caeruleus ogliastrae) nests contain between one to five aromatic herb species between the onset of egg laying till the chicks’ finished growth 13 d after hatching. An herb removal experiment during the chick stage shows that blue tits bring fresh aromatic material 1–5 d after herb removal. Nests with a series of distinct odour classes easily perceived by humans have never been reported in birds. A new ‘Potpourri’ hypothesis is proposed that may explain the functional significance of this behaviour.

Myrmecochory, i.e. dispersal of seeds by ants towards and around their nests, plays an important role in temperate forests. Yet hardly any study has examined plant population spread over several years and the underlying joint contribution of a hierarchy of dispersal modes and plant demography. We used a seed-sowing approach with three replicates to examine colonization patterns of Melampyrum pratense, an annual myrmecochorous herb, in a mixed Scots pine forest in north-eastern Germany. Using a spatially explicit individual-based (SEIB) model population patterns over 4 years were explained by short-distance transport of seeds by small ant species with high nest densities, resulting in random spread. However, plant distributions in the field after another 4 years were clearly deviating from model predictions. Mean annual spread rate increased from 0.9 to 5.1 m per year, with a clear inhomogeneous component. Obviously, after a lag-phase of several years, non-random seed dispersal by large red wood ants (Formica rufa) was determining the species’ spread, thus resulting in stratified dispersal due to interactions with different-sized ant species. Hypotheses on stratified dispersal, on dispersal lag, and on non-random dispersal were verified using an extended SEIB model, by comparison of model outputs with field patterns (individual numbers, population areas, and maximum distances). Dispersal towards red wood ant nests together with seed loss during transport and redistribution around nests were essential features of the model extension. The observed lag-phase in the initiation of non-random, medium-distance transport was probably due to a change of ant behaviour towards a new food source of increasing importance, being a meaningful example for a lag-phase in local plant species invasion. The results demonstrate that field studies should check model predictions wherever possible. Future research will show whether or not the M. pratense–ant system is representative for migration patterns of similar animal dispersal systems after having crossed range edges by long-distance dispersal events.  相似文献

Predation involves costs and benefits, so predators should employ tactics that reduce their risk of injury or death and that increase their success at capturing prey. One potential way that predators could decrease risk and increase benefits is by attacking prey at night when risks may be reduced and prey more vulnerable. Because some snakes are facultatively nocturnal and prey on bird nests during the day and night, they are ideal for assessing the costs and benefits of diurnal vs. nocturnal predation. We used automated radiotelemetry and cameras to investigate predation on nesting birds by two species of snakes, one diurnal and the other facultatively nocturnal. We predicted that snakes preying on nests at night should experience less parental nest defence and capture more adults and nestlings. Rat snakes (Pantherophis obsoletus) were relatively inactive at night (23–36% activity) but nearly always preyed on nests after dark (80% of nest predations). Conversely, racers (Coluber constrictor) were exclusively diurnal and preyed on nests during the times of day they were most active. These results are consistent with rat snakes strategically using their capacity for facultative nocturnal activity to prey on nests at night. The likely benefit is reduced nest defence because birds defended their nests less vigourously at night. Consistent with nocturnal predation being safer, rat snake predation events lasted three times longer at night than during the day (26 vs. 8 min). Nocturnal nest predation did not make nests more profitable by increasing the likelihood of capturing adults or removing premature fledging of nestlings. The disconnect between rat snake activity and timing of nest predation seems most consistent with rat snakes locating prey during the day using visual cues but waiting until dark to prey on nests when predation is safer, although designing a direct test of this hypothesis will be challenging.  相似文献

The use of feathers to line bird’s nests has traditionally been interpreted as having a thermoregulatory function. Feather-degrading bacteria growing on feathers lining nests may have antimicrobial properties, which may provide an additional benefit to lining nests with feathers. We test the hypothesis that the production of antimicrobial substances by feather bacteria affects the microbiological environment of the nest, and therefore the bacterial density on eggshells and, indirectly, hatching success. These effects would be expected to differ between nests lined with pigmented and white feathers, because bacteria grow differently on feathers of different colors. We experimentally manipulated the composition of pigmented and unpigmented feathers in nests of the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) and studied the antimicrobial properties against the keratin-degrading bacterium Bacillus licheniformis of bacteria isolated from feathers of each color. Analyzed feathers were collected at the end of the incubation period, and antimicrobial activity was defined as the proportion of bacteria from the feathers that produce antibacterial substances effective against B. licheniformis. Our experimental manipulation affected antimicrobial activity, which was higher in nests with only white feathers at the beginning of incubation. Moreover, white feathers showed higher antimicrobial activity than black ones. Interestingly, antimicrobial activity in feathers of one of the colors correlated negatively with bacterial density on feather of the opposite color. Finally, antimicrobial activity of white feathers was negatively related to eggshell bacterial load. These results suggest that antimicrobial properties of feathers in general and of white feathers in particular affect the bacterial environment in nests. This environment in turn affects the bacterial load on eggshells, which may affect hatching success.  相似文献

The exploration of animal migration has entered a new era with individual-based tracking during multiple years. Here, we investigated repeated migratory journeys of a long-distance migrating bird, the marsh harrier Circus aeruginosus, in order to analyse the variation within and between individuals with respect to routes and timing. We found that there was a stronger individual repeatability in time than in space. Thus, the annual timing of migration varied much less between repeated journeys of the same individual than between different individuals, while there was considerable variation in the routes of the same individual on repeated journeys. The overall contrast in repeatability between time and space was unexpected and may be owing to strong endogenous control of timing, while short-term variation in environmental conditions (weather and habitat) might promote route flexibility. The individual variation in migration routes indicates that the birds navigate mainly by other means than detailed route recapitulation based on landmark recognition.  相似文献

Nestlings of most avian species produce faecal sacs, which facilitate the removal of nestlings’ excrements by parents, thereby reducing proliferation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms and/or detectability by predators and parasites. The nest microbial environment that birds experience during early life might also affect their development and thus, faecal sacs facilitating parental removal may be a strategy to decrease bacterial contamination of nests that could harm developing nestlings. Here, we tested this hypothesis by experimentally broken faecal sacs and spreading them in nests of spotless starlings Sturnus unicolor, thereby avoiding their removal by adults. In accordance with the hypothesis, experimental nests harboured higher bacterial density than control nests. Nestlings in experimental nests were of smaller size (tarsus length) and experienced lower probability of survival (predation) than those in control nests. Moreover, nestlings in experimental nests tended to suffer more from ectoparasites than those in control nests. We discuss the possible pivotal role of bacteria producing chemical volatiles that ectoparasites and predators might use to find avian nests, and that could explain our experimental results in starlings.  相似文献

Birds’ behavioral response to brood parasitism can be influenced not only by evolution but also by context and individual experience. This could include nest sanitation, in which birds remove debris from their nests. Ultimately, nest sanitation behavior might be an evolutionary precursor to the rejection of parasitic eggs. Proximately, the context or experience of performing nest sanitation behavior might increase the detection or prime the removal of parasitic eggs, but evidence to date is limited. We tested incubation-stage nests of herring gulls Larus argentatus to ask whether nest sanitation increased parasitic egg rejection. In an initial set of 160 single-object experiments, small, red, blocky objects were usually rejected (18 of 20 nests), whereas life-sized, 3D-printed herring gull eggs were not rejected whether red (0 of 20) or the olive-tan base color of herring gull eggs (0 of 20). Next, we simultaneously presented a red, 3D-printed gull egg and a small, red block. These nests exhibited frequent nest sanitation (small, red block removed at 40 of 48 nests), but egg rejection remained uncommon (5 of those 40) and not significantly different from control nests (5 of 49) which received the parasitic egg but not the priming object. Thus, performance of nest sanitation did not shape individuals’ responses to parasitism. Interestingly, parents were more likely to reject the parasitic egg when they were present as we approached the nest to add the experimental objects. Depending on the underlying mechanism, this could also be a case of experience creating variation in responses to parasitism.  相似文献

Influence of nest-floor slope on the nest choice of laying hens   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Group nests in alternative housing systems for laying hens primarily fulfil the hen's needs for seclusion and protection. Commercial nests used in Switzerland are built according to the provisions of the Swiss Animal Welfare Legislation. However, nest types can differ in aspects, such as floor slope, that could have an impact on egg-laying behaviour. Floor slope has to be designed so that eggs roll away without breaking and so that hens feel comfortable laying their eggs. In commercial nests, the slope is usually between 12% and 18%. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of floor slope on the hen's nest preference and laying behaviour. We predicted that hens would prefer nests with a lower sloped floor for evolutionary reasons and for reasons related to comfort.Eight pens, each with 17-18 white laying hens (LSL), were equipped with two roll-away nests (0.54 m2) having different floor slopes (12% and 18%). Eggs were collected each day (from approximately 20 weeks of age until 28 weeks of age); the number of eggs in each nest and on the floor of the pens was recorded. Behaviour inside the nest was filmed for two consecutive days during the main egg-laying time from the second hour to the fifth hour (4 h) after lights came on in week 27/28. The following data were recorded: number of hens in each nest, the nest visits/egg number ratio, the number of sitting events, the body alignment of hens sitting in the nest and the number and duration of nest visits. Data were analysed with a repeated-measures ANOVA. There was no difference between the numbers of eggs in the two nests, but more hens were counted in nests with a 12% slope (p = 0.027). The ratio between the number of nest visits and number of eggs did not differ significantly between the nests. However, we counted more sitting events in the nest with 12% slope (p = 0.007). The percentage of body alignment towards the back (p = 0.044) and towards the front (p = 0.028) of the nest differed between the nests. Furthermore, for nest visits lasting between 10 and 90 min, we found significant differences in the total number of nest visits (p = 0.039). For visits in this range of duration, we also found significant differences for nest visits with sitting (p = 0.025) and for the number of nest visits with egg laying (p = 0.049). All of these differences favoured the 12% nest. Both nests were generally accepted by the hens. However, because of the higher number of hens counted in the 12% nest and the higher amounts of nest visits and sitting events found in these nests, we recommend to use nests with a floor slope of 12% rather than 18%.  相似文献

The administration of the convulsant 3-mercaptopropionic acid (150 mg/kg i.p.) increased the respiratory capacity of mitochondria isolated from rat cerebral cortex. This increase was observed when pyruvate-malate were used as substrates, but oxygen uptake was not activated with succinate, glutamate-malate or α-ketoglutarate. Citrate synthase activity in rat brain homogenates increased (about 40%) after the administration of convulsant doses of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (50 and 150 mg/kg). This effect was found after seizures but not during seizures or after a dose that did not produce convulsions (20 mg/kg). The enhancement of citrate synthase activity was observed at various oxaloacetate concentrations, with an increase in Vmax. The enhancement was still evident after incubation and removal of the soluble phase by centrifugation, but not after freeze-thawing.  相似文献
