The dugong is a rare animal and virtually nothing is known of the time scale of its life cycle. A collection of 41 skulls and lower jaws, all from the north-eastern coastal region of Australia, was studied with the primary aim of relative age determination. It was found that they fell naturally into three groups corresponding roughly with skull size, according to number of incisors, number and state of eruption of cheek teeth and position of the cheek teeth in the jaw. These groups were arbitrarily termed adults, adolescents and juveniles. Skull measurements and state of fusion of skull sutures upheld these life stage groups, and to some extent helped to subdivide them. Further subdivision into a relative age sequence was achieved by "state of succession of cheek teeth" groups, and an index of size for the last cheek tooth. Twenty‐six microsatellite loci have been isolated from a dugong (Dugong dugon). The average heterozygosity was 0.52 with two to 10 alleles per locus surveyed from 50 individuals. The markers are suitable for genetic mark–recapture (PID = 5 × 10?16) in dugongs and they could also be used to quantify physical tag loss, estimate relatedness, assign paternity, elucidate population structure and identify migrants. The loci also amplified in Florida manatees (22/26) and Asian elephants (6/26).  相似文献

The Cryptosporidium "human" genotype was identified in a paraffin-embedded tissue section from a dugong (Dugong dugon) by 2 independent laboratories. DNA sequencing and polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene and the acetyl CoA synthethase gene clearly identified the genotype as that of the Cryptosporidium variant that infects humans. This is the first report of the human Cryptosporidium genotype in a nonprimate host.  相似文献

Thirty-eight dugong (Dugong dugon) hearts and 28 Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus) hearts were obtained from stranding programs in Australia and the United States. In addition to a double ventricular apex, a feature that has astonished scientists since the eighteenth century, the hearts of both animals have a double subvalvular conus and a dorsal left atrium. The heart lies in a vertical plane at right angles to that of the completely dorsal, symmetrical lungs. The dugong heart has a deeper interventricular cleft and a more conical left ventricle. The latter features may be part of a general morphological trend toward specialization for a more energetic aquatic existence. The presence of a bulbous ascending aorta in the manatee but not in the dugong is without explanation.  相似文献

Gender assignment for some aquatic mammals in the field is difficult. Molecular sexing from tissue biopsies is possible as males are heterogametic. Here we describe a multiplex PCR assay that amplifies the male specific SRY gene and differentiates ZFX and ZFY gametologues in two sirenian species, dugong (Dugong dugon) and West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus). The assay was validated with animals of known gender and proved accurate and robust to experimental failure.  相似文献

The distribution among size and reproductive classes of the digenean Lankatrematoides gardneri was recorded from the pancreatic ducts of 41 dugongs from the Gulf of Papua, Papua New Guinea. Infrapopulation sizes ranged from 5 to 921 worms and showed no correlation with host age, sex, or month of capture. Immature worms tended to be concentrated in intermediate size classes, the largest immatures being no more numerous than matures. The mean proportion of mature worms in the 29 infrapopulations containing them was small (9.8%). Mature worms were significantly greater in mass than the largest immatures. There is evidence of an interaction between the presence or absence of mature worms and the distribution of immatures among classes.  相似文献

Levels of urinary progesterone and estradiol-17 beta were measured twice a week in a female dugong, Dugong dugon, in captivity for two years from April 1996 to April 1998. The dugong showed 14 ovarian cycles during the period of study. Concentrations of progesterone ranged from 0.01 ng/mg creatinine (Cr) to 1.94 ng/mg Cr and the length of estrous cycle was 53.6+/-8.6 (mean+/-SEM) days based on intervals of urinary progesterone peak-to-peak measurements. Concentrations of urinary estradiol-17 beta ranged from 0.9pg/mgCr to 23.7pg/mgCr, and tended to peak just prior to elevations of progesterone during the first year of study. This is the first report demonstrates that the ovulatory cycle of the dugong is about 50 days. The present findings suggest that measurement of urinary progesterone is a useful method to detect ovarian cycle of the dugong in captivity.  相似文献

The Australian dugong (Dugong dugon) and Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) are threatened species of aquatic mammals in the order Sirenia. Sirenian conservation and management actions would benefit from a more complete understanding of genetic diversity and population structure. Generally, species-specific microsatellite markers are employed in conservation genetic studies; however, robust markers can be difficult and costly to isolate. To increase the number of available markers, dugong and manatee microsatellite primers were evaluated for cross-species amplification. Furthermore, one manatee and four dugong novel primers are reported. After polymerase chain reaction optimization, 23 (92%) manatee primers successfully amplified dugong DNA, of which 11 (48%) were polymorphic. Of the 32 dugong primers tested, 27 (84%) yielded product in the manatee, of which 17 (63%) were polymorphic. Dugong and manatee primers were compared and the most informative markers were selected to create robust and informative marker-panels for each species. These cross-species microsatellite marker-panels can be employed to assess other sirenian populations and can provide beneficial information for the protection and management of these unique mammals.  相似文献

Food consumption and digestion of male and female dugongs (Dugong dugon) was examined by analyzing long-term (1979–1998) feeding records at Toba Aquarium (Japan). Throughout all captive feeding periods, dugongs consumed eelgrass (Zostera marina) and showed steady increases in feed consumption with a consistent weight gain of 42–45?kg a year. The daily consumption of male and female dugongs increased from 10–15?kg to 23–26?kg of fresh eelgrass, accounting for approximately 14 and 7% of their body weight at one and seven years old, respectively. Both dugongs had a marginal dry matter digestibility of over 90%. Food consumption varied between seasons and individuals. There were major reductions (P<0.05) in consumption by the male in November and January and by the female in August and September. The seasonal reductions in food consumption coincided with high digestibility of eelgrass.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy showed that some rod bacteria attached to the surface of plant tissue degraded and eroded the cell walls. Number of starch-, lactate-, cellobiose-, pectin-, xylan- and cellulose-utilizing bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane-producing bacteria were estimated at 109 ∼ 1010 colony forming units g-1. Microorganisms degraded the cellulose and noncellulolytic components of the eelgrass, and about 47.3% of dry matter was degraded after 36 h in vitro incubation. The total VFA concentration was 10.5 mmol dL-1 at 36 h incubation, which included 55.7 mol% acetate, 18.0 mol% n-butyrate and 15.1 mol% propionate. The gas composition of in vitro fermentation was 68.4% carbon dioxide, 22.2% methane and 9.4% hydrogen.  相似文献

We have studied vertical progression behaviour in Helix and its modification by the animals' encountering either quinine or water on a thread tied at the top of vertically-placed glass rods. There is both short and long term memory of the aversive (quinine) experience, as well as habituation of climbing in snails encountering an apparently neutral (water) stimulus. Some of the factors which appear to influence climbing latencies and acquisition and retention of the nature of the goal stimulus are: length of laboratory housing, humidity and nutritional and reproductive condition.  相似文献

Regular samples of Gammarus pulex and dace Leuciscus leuciscus and occasional grayling Thymallus thymallus and chub L.cephalus were examined from the River Avon, Hampshire, for the presence of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus leavis . The parasite only occurred in medium sized Gammarus due to lower probability of contact with small gammarids and stunted growth and selective mortality amongst older infected ones. No cycles in incidence or development of the parasite in G.pulex were observed. The parasite infected gammarids and grew in all months, and cystacanths were available throughout the year. Despite seasonal feeding activity and dietary preferences, fish fed on Gammarus and acquired infections in all months. Dispersion of P.laevis within the fish population was related to host feeding behaviour. No evidence of seasonal cycles in incidence or intensity of infection in fish was found, and observed monthly changes in the parasite population were related to changes in size structure of the host sample. In dace and grayling P.laevis grew little and matured only in summer, but in chub it grew and produced acanthors all year. The parasite population in fish appeared to be in a state of dynamic equilibrium and gain and loss of parasites took place throughout the year with the level of infection at any moment being determined primarily by the feeding behaviour of the host. This relationship between host diet, water temperature and parasite population size is discussed, and P.laevis in the R. Avon compared with other localities and other parasites.  相似文献

  • 8 Newly emerged adults may construct winter burrows after autumn breeding. Second season adults may not hibernate, and often fail to survive another winter.

The distribution, specificity and pathogenicity of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis (Müller) were studied in the River Avon, Hampshire. The parasite occurred in every fish species, but three categories of hosts could be distinguished. Using growth and maturation as criteria of specificity, only chub Leuciscus cephalus (L.) and barbel Barbus barbus (L.) were recognized as its preferred hosts. Parasites occasionally matured in trout Salmo trutta (L.) and dace Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), but none grew or matured in other host species. Changes in the abundance of P. laevis along the river were related to changes in the abundance of both the intermediate host, Gammarus pulex , and the preferred hosts, and its occurrence in fish to the importance of G. pulex in their diet. In the upper reaches of the River Avon and in other localities populations could be maintained at a low level by parasites maturing in trout, and presence and abundance at any site depended upon the presence and abundance of both intermediate and definitive hosts especially and upon the dietary preferences of the latter. The absence of P. laevis from many parts of Britain is nevertheless still inexplicable. The parasite caused local damage to the intestinal wall of fish, the extent of which varied from species to species, but did not affect host growth rate or cause direct mortality and P. laevis cannot be regarded as an important pathogen in the River Avon or any other British River.  相似文献
