Experiments were done at temperatures from 5 to 20 C to investigate the effects of infection of linseed seed (cv. Antares) by Botrytis cinerea or Alternaria linicola on seedling emergence and to study transmission of the pathogens from seed to seedlings. In one experiment with freshly harvested seed, the maximum percentage emergence decreased linearly as the incidence of B. cinerea in seed increased from 0 to 83% at 18 C day/12 C night temperatures. In another experiment, the decrease in percentage emergence of seed associated with infection by B. cinerea. the transmission of the pathogen to seedlings to produce disease symptoms on their hypocotyls and the incidence of post-emergence death all increased as temperature decreased from 20 to 5 C. However, the decrease in percentage emergence of seed associated with infection by A. linicola and the transmission of the pathogen to seedlings to produce cotyledon lesions both increased as temperature increased from 5 to 20 C. There was little effect of either pathogen on the time from sowing to 36% of maximum emergence, which decreased with increasing temperature. In a subsequent experiment at 10 C comparing seed infected with B.cinerea or A. linicola. using the same seed sources as in the previous experiments, infection by A. linicola decreased emergence more than infection by B. cinerea , even though the incidence of A. linicola in the seed was smaller. Analyses of position and parallelism suggested that regressions of maximum percentage emergence (logitransformed) against temperature were fitted best by non-parallel lines for seed infected by B. cinerea or A. linicola.  相似文献

Mycelium of Leptosphaeria maculans survived on oilseed rape stem base debris buried in sand for 2,4, 6, 8,10 or 12 months and produced pseudothecia after subsequent exposure on the surface of the ground under natural conditions for 2–4 months, but did not survive on upper stem debris buried for 2 months. Only A‐group L. maculans ascospores were produced on the stem base debris which had been buried; no B‐group ascospores were produced. Mycelium of L. maculans survived on both stem base and upper stem debris exposed on the sand surface for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 months and pseudothecia with viable ascospores were observed at the time of sampling. Both A‐group L. maculans (predominant on stem bases) and B‐group L. maculans (predominant on upper stems) ascospores were produced on unburied stem base and upper stem debris. Thus B‐group L. maculans survived longer on unburied debris than on buried debris. A‐group ascospores which were exposed in dry air in darkness at 5–20°C survived longer than B‐group ascospores; 10–37% of A‐group ascospores, compared with 2–31% of B‐group ascospores, survived after 35 days.  相似文献

1. Seedling emergence patterns of triazine-susceptible and triazine-resistant Solanum nigrum in the field were studied in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Emergence patterns were similar in the first year, but in the second year resistant seedlings emerged faster and the number of resistant seedlings was higher. To explain emergence patterns, a germination experiment was carried out.
2. Seeds from two populations with triazine-susceptible and -resistant biotypes were buried in late autumn and exhumed monthly during spring. Germination was assessed in incubators at different constant temperatures.
3. The lowest temperatures for germination of seeds from the Achterberg population ranged from 20°C on 1 February to 10°C on 1 May for the susceptible biotype, and from 15°C on 1 February to 10°C on 1 May for the resistant biotype. The lowest temperatures for germination of seeds from the Zelhem population ranged from 25°C on 1 February to 10°C on 1 May for the susceptible biotype, and from 15°C on 1 February to 10°C on 1 May for the resistant biotype. The minimum germination temperature of seeds from the resistant biotype appeared to be lower than that of the susceptible biotype.
4. Emergence patterns in the field could be explained by soil temperature and different minimum germination temperature requirements of seeds from the triazine-susceptible and -resistant biotype. This knowledge can be used to manage triazine-resistant biotypes of S. nigrum by the timing of soil cultivation.  相似文献

Celery leaf spot: sources of inoculum   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The relative importance of infected celery seed, infected leaf debris in the soil, and infected wild celery, in the incidence of Septoria leaf spot in cultivated celery has been investigated. Infection can be caused when the sole source of inoculum is viable spores on the seed surface; such spores are considered to be the main cause of disease outbreaks. Of all the seed samples examined, 93% were infected by Septoria spp. In untreated seed samples, 40% carried viable spores which survived for up to 15 months on seed stored in the laboratory, and for longer periods on seed stored at -20d? C. However, ageing of seed is not recommended as a commercial control measure. The fungus was not found in seed embryos or endosperms but mycelium was present in pericarps and testas. Unconfirmed evidence suggests that in favourable circumstances new spores might be produced in old seed-borne pycnidia.  相似文献

Portulaca oleracea , a C4 species, is reported to be a serious weed in 45 crops in 81 countries. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory, the screenhouse and the field to determine the influence of environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of P. oleracea . In the laboratory, germination in the dark was low and was not influenced by the tested temperatures (35/25°C, 30/20°C and 25/15°C alternating day/night temperatures). In the light/dark regime, however, germination was lower at 25/15°C and 35/25°C than at 30/20°C (70%, 75% and 81% germination, respectively). In conditions of 106 mM sodium chloride or −0.34 MPa osmotic potential, seeds germinated to only 50% of maximum germination of the control. Germination was not influenced by buffered pH solutions ranging from 5 to 9. In the screenhouse, germination was greatest for seeds placed on the soil surface, but emergence declined with increasing seed burial depth in soil; no seedlings emerged from the depth of 2 cm. Seedling emergence and seedling dry matter were markedly reduced by the addition of rice residue to the soil surface at rates equivalent to 4 to 6 t ha−1. In the field, seedling emergence of P. oleracea was greater under zero till (ZT) (17–20%) than under minimum tillage (6–10%), a likely reflection of low seed burial and exposure of seeds to light with a ZT system. This study identifies some of the factors enabling P. oleracea to be a widespread weed in the humid tropics, and the information could contribute to improved control strategies.  相似文献

The N-substituted phthalimide, AC 94377, promoted the germination of dry-stored seeds of 17 out of 24 weed species in Petri-dish tests maintained at 22°C. In a further test it was able to substitute for light and/or alternating temperatures in promoting the germination of some species. AC 94377 was more active than GA, in stimulating Solanum nigrum seed to germinate. When mixed with soil in the laboratory, AC 94377 again promoted germination of S. nigrum but the level and persistence of activity differed between soils. In the glasshouse, with soil containing a natural weed seed population, more seedlings emerged from treated than from untreated soil but this number represented fewer than half of the apparently viable seeds present. Field applications of AC 94377 promoted the germination of hand-sown seeds of certain weed species but did not increase the number of seedlings emerging from the natural weed seed bank.  相似文献

An account is given of the survey made in 1940-55 to determine the incidence of the seed-borne fungal parasites of flax. It was shown that fibre flax seed produced in eastern and south-eastern England was relatively free from contamination with Colletotrichum linicola, Polyspora lini and Phoma sp. and that there was no build-up of infection in seed stocks in these areas. In the wetter and cooler regions west and north of the Pennines, conditions were more favourable for these fungi, and seed contamination tended to increase.
Seed contamination with Botrytis cinerea was general throughout the United Kingdom, with a tendency to be higher in coastal and upland areas. The incidence of Fusarium lini and Alternaria linicola in fibre flax seed produced in the United Kingdom was negligible.
The examination of seed samples from other countries indicated the possible importance of P. lini in Denmark, of B. cinerea and C. linicola in the Netherlands, of A. linicola as a contaminant of oil flax seed in Sweden, and of C. linicola in parts of Canada.
Seed disinfection, using a thiram product, proved useful for the control of flax diseases in general, but should be used as an ancillary to the method of avoiding seed infection by limiting the production of seed flax to areas where the risk of contamination is slight or absent. Where there is any risk of a build-up of contamination, seed disinfection should be carried out as a routine practice each season.  相似文献

To better understand the germination ecophysiology of the genus Lonicera , the dormancy class, temperature requirements for embryo growth and radicle emergence and phenology of seedling emergence were determined for Lonicera caerulea var. emphyllocalyx . At maturity, seeds have an underdeveloped embryo (approximately 28% of the length of full-grown embryos). Embryos in fresh seeds grew to full length at 15, 20, 20/10 and 25/15°C within 3 weeks, but failed to grow at ≤ 10°C and at 30°C. Radicles emerged from 86–100% of freshly matured seeds in light at 15, 20, 20/10 and 25/15°C within 28 days, but failed to emerge at 10°C. Radicles emerged equally well in a 12 h photoperiod and in continuous darkness at 25/15°C. Rapid embryo growth and germination over a range of conditions indicate that seeds of this taxon have morphological dormancy (MD); this is the first report of MD in a species of Lonicera . Seeds are dispersed in summer, at which time high temperatures promote embryo growth. Embryos grow to the critical length for germination in approximately 1 month; the peak of seedling emergence occurs in early autumn. Radicles emerged within 2 months from 98% of seeds buried at soil depths of 2 cm and 10 cm in the field in August in Sapporo, Japan; thus, seeds have no potential to form a persistent soil seed bank. However, seeds sown too late in autumn for embryos to grow remained viable and germinated the following summer when temperatures were high enough to promote embryo growth.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The function of sexual reproduction of perennials in restoration of vegetation of active dune fields frequently has been underestimated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of sexual reproduction of the perennial Salix gordejevii in the revegetation of active dunes. METHODS: Seedling emergence and establishment of S. gordejevii were examined both in controlled experiments (germination at different burial depths with different watering regimes) and in field observations in three dune slacks. The reproductive phenology and soil seed bank of S. gordejevii, the dynamics of soil moisture, the groundwater table and the landform level of three dune slacks were monitored. KEY RESULTS: Seeds of S. gordejevii began maturation on 1 May, and seed dispersal lasted from 8 May to 20 May. Seeds on the soil surface germinated significantly faster than those buried in soil (P<0.05). Seedling emergence was negatively correlated with landform level. When most seedlings emerged, there was a significantly positive correlation between soil moisture and seedling emergence (P<0.01). Rainfall was negatively correlated with seedling emergence. Seedling establishment was significantly and positively correlated with seedling emergence (P<0.05), and 72.3 % of the emergent seedlings were established at the end of the growing season. These results indicated that (a) seeds matured and dispersed before the rainy season; (b) seeds germinated as soon as they contacted a moist surface and relied more on soil moisture than on rainfall; and (c) more seedlings emerged at lower sampling points in dune slacks. CONCLUSIONS: In natural conditions, restoration of active sand dune fields generally commences with revegetation of dune slacks where sexual reproduction of perennials contributes greatly to species encroachment and colonization and hence plays an important role in restoration of active dune fields. Furthermore, aeolian erosion in dune slacks, leading to good soil moisture, facilitates seed germination, seedling emergence and establishment of S. gordejevii.  相似文献

Seed of arrowleaf clover (Trifolium vesiculosum Savi) were inoculated with a streptomycin resistant mutant ofRhizobium leguminosarum biovartrifolii and planted on the surface of a Norwood fine sandy loam and at 10 and 25 mm depths. Populations of rhizobia declined from an excess of 10,000 seed−1 immediately after inoculation to less than 100 within three to four days after sowing on the soil surface when water was the peat inoculant adhesive. Gum arabic as the adhesive promoted the survival of rhizobia. Populations of rhizobia on surface sown seed declined much more rapidly than on seed buried in soil. Although, the soil was nearly air dry, rhizobia on buried seed survived at populations exceeding 1,000 seed−1. The maximum soil temperatures ranged between 21 and 36°C over the sampling time and did not seem to have a major influence on short term survival of rhizobia. Delayed germination of seed due to the higher temperature would indirectly influence the number of viable rhizobia present at germination.  相似文献

Seeds of Datura ferox were collected in soybean fields, grouped into four categories according to the degree of fruit maturity and placed just level with the soil surface or buried to a depth of 7 or 15 cm. Seed survival after 8 months was c. 30% when the seeds were left on the soil surface, but between 40 and 90% when the seeds were buried. The riper seeds were the more persistent. A similar pattern was observed after 20 months. Seedling emergence was negatively related with the degree of seed maturity and depth of burial, but it was never great enough to explain seed losses. In another experiment seeds from ripe capsules were superficially sown and the soil was: (0) left undisturbed, (1) cultivated in late winter or (2) cultivated in late winter and late spring. In all cases there was a small flush of seedlings at the beginning of the first spring; other flushes occurred only after soil cultivation and were larger during the second spring than during the first. In the plots cultivated twice a year (2) the seedlings that emerged in the first spring represented c. 4% of the initial seed bank. Survival after 20 months was about 25% in all treatments. In an arable field under soybean cropping the seedling flushes during the spring months were related to the pattern of soil cultivation. The seedlings that emerged after crop drilling represented c. 18% of the seed bank (estimated before drilling). Implications for weed management are discussed.  相似文献

Question: What is the effect of vertical seed distribution (i.e. seeds on soil surface or buried) and the relative importance of vertical and horizontal seed distribution (i.e. seeds near established vegetation or near bare soil) for seedling emergence? Location: Patagonian arid steppe. Methods: To evaluate the effect of vertical seed distribution on seedling emergence, four sowing treatments were used in field and greenhouse experiments. Vertical vs. horizontal seed distribution and the occurrence of seedlings were analysed in the field. Effects of trampling and mechanical drilling on seedling emergence were investigated experimentally in the field. Results: In field and glasshouse experiments buried seeds showed a higher emergence and larger seedling size than seeds lying on the soil surface. The observational field study indicated that natural emergence was not associated with particular microsites or plant cover (horizontal distribution), but that most seedlings emerged from buried positions (vertical distribution). Buried seeds represented less than 10% of the sampled seed cohort but account for almost 60% of the seedlings. The trampling/drilling experiment showed that sheep trampling and mechanical drilling increased seedling emergence compared to non‐treated controls. Conclusions: The population dynamics of Bromus pictus is strongly constrained by the vertical position of seeds, which largely affects emergence, and seed horizontal distribution, which largely affects seedling survival. Our results showed that sheep trampling after seed dispersal may be a low‐input technique for increasing grass recruitment.  相似文献

Fire, through soil heating effects, causes flushes of seed germination in Acacia suaveolens. Optimal temperatures for germination are between 60 and 80°C for any duration, or up to 100°C for durations less than 1 h. Exposure to temperatures less than 60°C leaves seeds dormant and viable, whilst seed death occurs in increasing proportions with increasing exposure to temperatures greater than 80°C. A field study of temperatures in the soil under simulated burns showed that the innate seed dormancy in A. suaveolens would only be broken for seeds up to a depth of 1 cm in ‘cool’ or 4 cm in ‘hot’ burns. In the hot burns some of the seeds in the top 1 cm of the soil were killed by excessive heating. These simulated burns most resemble cool and moderate/high intensity wildfires, respectively. Seeds can emerge from depths up to 8 cm and, for any seeds buried deeper than this, the probability of emergence is progressively reduced down to nil at 14 cm. Seeds buried between 5 and 10 cm will be heated sufficiently to break their dormancy only in a very high intensity wildfire. Seeds buried between 5 and 10 cm deep mostly occur in nests of an ant, Pheidole sp. Field observations of emergent seedlings confirm that post-fire emergence is concentrated over a small range of soil depths directly related to the intensity and duration of heating that occurs, whilst occasional seedlings may appear from greater or lesser depths largely dependent upon the spatial heterogeneity of soil heating in natural fires.  相似文献

Cyperus difformis , Cyperus iria and Fimbristylis miliacea are troublesome annual sedges of rice grown in many countries. Laboratory and screenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of temperature, light, salt and water stress, seed burial depth, and flooding time, duration and depth on germination, emergence and growth of these three species. Germination of all the three species was stimulated by light and warm fluctuating temperatures. Germination of C. difformis was influenced to a greater degree by increasing salt and water stress than C. iria and F. miliacea . In all three species, seeds sown on the soil surface gave the greatest percentage of seedling emergence, and no seedlings emerged from seeds buried in soil at depths of ≥1 cm. Flooding, although not continuous or deep, had a suppressive effect on emergence and growth of C. iria and F. miliacea . Intermittent flooding to shallow depths, however, was less effective in controlling C. difformis ; deep flooding was needed to suppress growth of C. difformis seedlings. When the flooding was delayed to 21 days after sowing, there was little growth reduction in all three species.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of diurnally alternating temperatures and of prolonged burial in the soil on germination response of redroot pigweed ( Amaranthus retroflexus L.) seeds to ethylene were investigated. Percentage germination in a 12 h/12 h, 23° C/35° C temperature regime roughly equalled that observed at constant 35° C, and greatly exceeded that observed at 30°C. Preincubation for 61 d in alternating temperatures, which were gradually increased to simulate soil warming in spring, caused little germination in the absence of ethylene, but considerably enhanced sensitivity to ethylene. Seeds kept in soil in the same temperature regime failed to show the response to ethylene, and the soil itself removed ethylene from the soil atmosphere.
After burial in a field plot either over winter or during the summer, seeds had a very low ethylene response threshold (0.01−0.05 cm3 m−3) and strong response to ethylene (70–95% germination at 51 cm3 m−3 compared to 1–20% without ethylene). Germinability of seeds buried overwinter declined between 10 May (85%) and 24 May (7%), and 90% of those recovered on or after 24 May had a visible rupture in the seed coat. Apparently, germination had begun during burial, but was arrested by unknown causes in an early phase and was followed by seed deterioration.
Although the role of ethylene in germination of buried seeds remains uncertain, the greatly enhanced sensitivity to ethylene observed in pigweed seeds after burial deserves further investigation.  相似文献

Acorns of Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata Maxim. are often predated by small mammals and birds in natural forests. These animals not only eat the acorns during the acorn ripening season, but also cache and hoard most of the remaining acorns on the forest floor in the soil for their future use. These buried acorns form the main seed resource for regeneration. Burying depth is potentially important for germination and for seedling development. The effects of burying depth on germination and seedling development in relation to acorn size were studied in an experiment, in which acorns were planted at 6 cm-, 12 cm- and 18 cm-depth. The experimental results showed that fewer acorns germinated as burying depth increased. From the deeply buried acorns fewer seedlings emerged at later time than from those acorns buried less deeply. They appeared to have more difficulties to emerge above-ground than the seedlings from shallowly buried acorns. The deeply buried acorns and their seedlings also appeared to be more susceptible to rot. Acorn size did not significantly affect germination and emergence of the seedlings. As early emerged seedlings had longer developmental periods in their first growing season, and therefore grew better than the late emerged seedlings, seedlings from the shallowly buried acorns took the advantage.

Abstract. Temperatures of small succulent plants, such as species in the genera Haworthia and Lithops , are highly influenced by temperatures of the surrounding soil. Indeed, the minimum and the maximum temperatures of the upper leaf epidermis of Haworthia retusa. H. turgida. Lithops leslei , and L. turbiniformis were generally within 1°C of the accompanying soil surface temperatures. An energybudget model closely predicted such soil-to-plant temperature differences as well as the effect of the greater convective exchange for the protruding Haworthia species compared with the Lithops species, which were flush with the soil surface. Although a lower shortwave absorptance would reduce maximum shoot temperatures, the shortwave absorptances of all four species were similar to those of the soil in their respective native habitats in South Africa. Tolerances of the four species to low and to high temperatures at three different day/night air temperatures (15°C/5°C, 30°C/20°C, and 45°C/35°C) were analysed using cellular accumulation of a vital stain, neutral red. Chlorenchyma cells were slightly more tolerant of extreme temperatures than were cells of the water-storage parenchyma. In this regard, H. retusa survived low and high temperatures that killed the water-storage parenchyma but not the chlorenchyma. Acclimation to low temperatures and to high temperatures, which was exhibited by all four species, led to estimated tolerances to 1 h at −16°C and 68°C. Although the low temperature tolerance is not particularly noteworthy, very few vascular plants are reportedly able to tolerate such high temperatures.  相似文献

We demonstrate, using a simple field experiment, that soil warming is sufficient, independent of other cues, to potentially alter the recruitment of Betula pendula seedlings. This study suggests that changing temperature, and correlated changes in edaphic factors, can alter patterns in plant recruitment via differential effects on seed dormancy. Increased soil temperatures (of less than 5 °C) throughout the year led to a significant increase in the number of birch seedlings that emerged from soil samples collected in the spring. No concomitant changes in the emergence of other species was observed. Such temperature induced changes in seedbank dynamics and their subsequent effects on the competitive interactions within a plant community suggest far reaching ecological consequences of current increases in global temperature.  相似文献

Agriophyllum squarrosum Moq. is a dominant annual on sand dunes in the arid regions of central Asia. A high percentage of seeds is retained on dead plants which become covered by moving sand, but little is known about the ecological significance of burial of canopy-stored seeds. We investigated the size and dynamics of the buried canopy-stored seed bank and effects of burial on seed germination. In March (during the windy season), May (beginning of the germination season), and July (middle of the growing season), the number of seeds per square meter in sample plots in the dunes was 623, 223 and 22, respectively, with 54.6, 30.6 and 12.9% of the total seeds retained on buried plant canopies. In a controlled experiment, more seedlings emerged from released (dispersed) than from canopy-stored seeds when burial depth was the same. No viable ungerminated released seeds were found, but 45–80% of the ungerminated canopy-stored seeds were viable. In general, with an increase in applied water germination of released seeds buried at a depth of 1 or 2 cm and of canopy-stored seeds buried at 1 cm increased, but regardless of watering regime few or no released seeds at 4 cm or canopy-stored seeds at 2 or 4 cm germinated. Significantly more seedlings emerged from plants buried in a horizontal than in a vertical position. Seedlings originating from buried canopy-stored seeds on an active dune accounted for only 5.4% of the total seedlings emerging, and most of them emerged later than those from released seeds. Thus, seed release is more effectively postponed in buried than in exposed canopies, and burial of canopy-stored seeds is a mechanism that helps regulate seed germination and seedling emergence of A. squarrosum on active dunes.  相似文献
