Sex differences in adult behaviour are often interpreted as consequences of sexual selection and/or different reproductive roles in males and females. Sex-specific juvenile behaviour, however, has received less attention. Adult brown trout males are more aggressive than females during spawning and juvenile aggression may be genetically correlated with adult aggression in fish. We therefore tested the prediction that immature brown trout males are more aggressive and bolder than immature females. Because previous work has suggested that precocious maturation increases dominance in salmonids, we included precocious males in the study to test the prediction that early sexual maturation increase male aggression and boldness. Aggression and dominance relations were estimated in dyadic contests, whereas boldness was measured as a response to simulated predation risk using a model heron. Independent of maturity state, males initiated more than twice as many agonistic interactions as females in intersexual contests. However, males were not significantly more likely to win these contests than females. The response to a first predator attack did not differ between sex categories, but males reacted less to a second predator attack than females. Sexual maturity did not affect the antipredator response in males. Since there is no evidence from field studies that stream-living immature male and female salmonids differ in growth rate, it appears unlikely that the sex differences demonstrated are behavioural consequences of sex-specific investment in growth. It seems more likely that sex-specific behaviour arises as a correlated response to sexually selected gene actions promoting differential behaviour in adult males and females during reproduction. Alternatively, sex differences may develop gradually during juvenile life, because a gradual developmental program should be less costly than a sudden behavioural change at the onset of sexual maturity. 相似文献

World cowbirds (genus Molothrus, Icteridae), obligate brood parasites with contrasting life history strategies, to experimental arboviral infection. The
South American shiny cowbird (M. bonariensis) is an extreme host-generalist that lays its eggs in the nests of >225 different avian species. The Central American bronzed cowbird (M. aeneus) is a relative host-specialist that lays its eggs preferentially in the nests of approximately 12 orioles in a single sister genus. West Nile virus provided
a strong challenge and delineated immune differences between these species. The extreme host-generalist shiny cowbird, like
the North American host-generalist, the brown-headed cowbird, showed significantly lower viremia to three arboviruses than
related icterid species that were not brood parasites. The bronzed cowbird showed intermediate viremia. These findings support
the interpretation that repeated exposure to a high diversity of parasites favors the evolution of enhanced immunity in brood

In a field experiment, we studied how levels of aggression in males and females in established pairs of the Banggai cardinalfish were influenced by the sex of an experimentally introduced individual larger and more attractive than its resident counterpart. Contrary to previous studies on other cardinalfish species, and contrary to expectations in a sex role reversed species, the male was the main aggressor towards an intruder. Moreover, residents were more aggressive towards an intruder of the same sex as themselves. Furthermore, even though females often courted introduced, larger males, no intruder managed to take over the partnership of any resident. We suggest that our findings imply relatively equal sex roles in the Banggai cardinalfish and we discuss the evolution of sex specific territory defence and its significance in the Banggai cardinalfish as well as the implications of such behaviour in the interpretations of sex roles in general. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Brood parasites often must overcome host defenses that may include behaviors that serve other functions, such as deterrence of predators and nest attendance during laying and incubation. Host use by brood parasites may also be influenced by competitors in areas where more than one parasitic species occurs. We identified the degree to which behavior of potential hosts and potential competitors affected laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and Bronzed Cowbirds (M. aeneus) at a site in south Texas where they co‐occur. We watched potential host nests during the presunrise period to record cowbird laying and document nest visitation, laying, cowbird‐host encounters, and nest attentiveness by hosts. Hosts were frequently at their nests when cowbirds laid eggs (83% of 121 watches among nests of five host species) and cowbirds regularly encountered hosts (43–74% and 40–77% of watches per species of host for Brown‐headed and Bronzed cowbirds, respectively). Host nest defense infrequently interfered with cowbird laying and cowbirds rarely interacted with one another during laying. Overall, 12% of the 42 cowbird laying attempts that elicited host nest defense failed, resulting in cowbird eggs either laid atop hosts as they sat in nests or laid outside the nest cup. We clearly documented that relatively small hosts can thwart parasitism by cowbirds. Thus, the potential for successful defense of nests should be considered when assessing the evolution of behaviors to deter the removal of host eggs by cowbirds and mechanisms leading to nest abandonment. Regarding the latter, the presence of a cowbird at a nest would be a poor indicator for parasitism as some laying attempts were thwarted and unparasitized broods were reared at those nests. Despite the potential for nest defense to affect host use by cowbirds, we did not detect an effect of nest defense. Because most host defense was ineffective, we examined hypotheses for the timing of cowbird laying and host nest attendance. Our analysis of time of day of laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds at our site and data compiled from the literature suggests that laying time is best predicted by the time of civil twilight (first light) rather than sunrise. 相似文献

The common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus, is an evictor brood parasite that generally reduces host fitness to zero, exerting strong selective pressure on hosts to evolve egg recognition and rejection. However, a great deal of variation in egg‐rejection efficiency exists, egg‐rejection behaviour being considered a flexible conditional response against parasitic eggs. Recently, it has been shown that some of the individuals that recognized (pecked) the parasitic egg finally accepted it. Here, we present the results of two egg‐recognition experiments made in two populations of rufous‐tailed scrub robins, Cercotrichas galactotes, in which one plaster model or a real house sparrow's egg, respectively, was experimentally introduced into their nests. The hosts' response was video recorded, allowing us to quantify the number of pecks, pecking strength, and ejection behaviour. We have found that rufous‐tailed scrub robin females ejected the model egg easily by grasping it after weakly pecking it; however, sometimes (55%) females pecked the experimental egg but did not eject it. This acceptance after pecking is not the consequence of a failure at puncture ejection, given that when confronted with real eggs (soft and easily punctured) in the second experiment, only 20% of pecked eggs were ejected, signifying that females that pecked at eggs without ejecting them had a low motivation to eject. We also discuss the effect of clutch inspection and the function of pecking strength. Finally, based on our own and previous research demonstrating pecking not followed by rejection, we propose a stepwise discrimination process in which accumulating motivation plays a key role in determining behavioural pathways shaping host response to parasitic eggs. 相似文献

The eggs of some obligate brood parasites are more spherical than the eggs of their non‐parasitic relatives and hosts, which contributes to the increased strength of their shells. We examined whether egg shape, including the more spherical shape of brown‐headed cowbird eggs (Molothrus ater), influenced egg discrimination in American robins (Turdus migratorius) and gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis). We added a series of artificial objects to robin and catbird nests that varied in shape from a control host egg, a rounded, cowbird‐like egg, to odd‐shaped objects. Real cowbird eggs were significantly more spherical than catbird and robin eggs, which confirmed a potential cue for egg recognition. Object shape significantly influenced the probability of rejection and time to rejection in both robins and catbirds. However, rounded eggs and spheres were rejected infrequently and at frequencies similar to control eggs. Therefore, the shape of a brood parasite's egg does not appear to influence egg discrimination in these two rejecters. Robins and catbirds rejected significantly more odd‐shaped objects than egg‐shaped objects and odd‐shaped objects were rejected significantly sooner than egg‐shaped objects. The rejection of odd‐shaped objects likely represents an expression of nest‐sanitation behaviour where debris is removed from the nest. By comparison with other studies of accepters of cowbird eggs, robins and catbirds appear to reject higher proportions of odd‐shaped objects, which suggests they may have more refined abilities to discriminate against foreign objects in their nests. 相似文献

Trissolcus egg parasitoids, when perceiving the chemical footprints left on a substrate by pentatomid host bugs, adopt a motivated searching behaviour characterized by longer searching time on patches were signals are present. Once in contact with host chemical footprints, Trissolcus wasps search longer on traces left by associated hosts rather than non-associated species, and, in the former case, they search longer on traces left by females than males. Based on these evidences, we hypothesized that only associated hosts induce the ability to discriminate host sex in wasps. To test this hypothesis we investigated the ability of Trissolcus basalis, T. brochymenae, and Trissolcus sp. to distinguish female from male Nezara viridula, Murgantia histrionica, and Graphosoma semipunctatum footprints. These three pentatomid bugs were selected according to variable association levels. Bioassays were conducted on filter paper sheets, and on Brassica oleracea (broccoli) leaves. The results confirmed our hypothesis showing that wasps spent significantly more time on female rather than male traces left by associated hosts on both substrates. No differences were observed in the presence of traces left by non-associated hosts. The ecological consequences for parasitoid host location behaviour are discussed. 相似文献

Many hosts of avian brood parasites such as the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) show refined egg discrimination behaviour. Egg recognition in most open‐nesting hosts seems to be based entirely on differences in colour. However, hole‐ and dome‐nesting hosts may rely largely on luminance contrasts. Here, we studied egg rejection behaviour in nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos), an open‐nesting species that nests in deeply shadowed positions and lays very specific dark olive‐green eggs. Although being theoretically suitable as hosts of the cuckoo, nightingales are very rarely parasitized and no cuckoo egg morph mimicking nightingale eggs is known. Thus, we predicted high rejection rate of foreign eggs, but because of the dim nesting environments, luminance contrasts would be an important cue in egg rejection decisions, similar to cavity‐ or dome‐nesting species. We experimentally parasitized nightingale nests with two groups of model egg types: ‘bright eggs’ and ‘dark eggs’. Within each group, one of the egg types was an effective match while the other type was a poor colour match (whitish vs. pale blue and olive‐green vs. black).We used a discrimination visual model to quantify host‐model egg similarity and compared egg rejection predicted by the model with the observed rejection pattern. Consistent with a scenario of largely luminance‐based egg recognition, blue and white eggs, which had larger achromatic mismatching, were rejected at a higher relative rate than the better achromatic matching black and green eggs. Nightingales showed strong aggression to a cuckoo dummy, suggesting that they were involved in coevolutionary interactions with the cuckoo in the past. However, because of the highly distinct appearance of nightingale eggs relative to the other sympatrically breeding passerines, and the largely luminance‐based egg recognition, this arms race was likely terminated at an early stage. 相似文献

Background
Data on sex-specific differences in sound production, acoustic behaviour and hearing abilities in fishes are rare. Representatives of numerous catfish families are known to produce sounds in agonistic contexts (intraspecific aggression and interspecific disturbance situations) using their pectoral fins. The present study investigates differences in agonistic behaviour, sound production and hearing abilities in males and females of a callichthyid catfish.Methodology/Principal Findings
Eight males and nine females of the armoured catfish Megalechis thoracata were investigated. Agonistic behaviour displayed during male-male and female-female dyadic contests and sounds emitted were recorded, sound characteristics analysed and hearing thresholds measured using the auditory evoked potential (AEP) recording technique. Male pectoral spines were on average 1.7-fold longer than those of same-sized females. Visual and acoustic threat displays differed between sexes. Males produced low-frequency harmonic barks at longer distances and thumps at close distances, whereas females emitted broad-band pulsed crackles when close to each other. Female aggressive sounds were significantly shorter than those of males (167 ms versus 219 to 240 ms) and of higher dominant frequency (562 Hz versus 132 to 403 Hz). Sound duration and sound level were positively correlated with body and pectoral spine length, but dominant frequency was inversely correlated only to spine length. Both sexes showed a similar U-shaped hearing curve with lowest thresholds between 0.2 and 1 kHz and a drop in sensitivity above 1 kHz. The main energies of sounds were located at the most sensitive frequencies.Conclusions/Significance
Current data demonstrate that both male and female M. thoracata produce aggressive sounds, but the behavioural contexts and sound characteristics differ between sexes. Sexes do not differ in hearing, but it remains to be clarified if this is a general pattern among fish. Early stress can have long-lasting phenotypic effects. Previous research shows that male and female chickens differ in many behavioural aspects, and respond differently to chronic stress. The present experiment aimed to broadly characterize long-term sex differences in responses to brief events of stress experienced during the first weeks of life. Chicks from a commercial egg-laying hybrid were exposed to stress by inducing periods of social isolation during their first three weeks of life, followed by a broad behavioural, physiological and genomic characterization throughout life. Early stressed males, but not females, where more anxious in an open field-test, stayed shorter in tonic immobility and tended to have delayed sexual maturity, as shown by a tendency for lower levels of testosterone compared to controls. While early stressed females did not differ from non-stressed in fear and sexual maturation, they were more socially dominant than controls. The differential gene expression profile in hypothalamus was significantly correlated from 28 to 213 days of age in males, but not in females. In conclusion, early stress had a more pronounced long-term effect on male than on female chickens, as evidenced by behavioral, endocrine and genomic responses. This may either be attributed to inherent sex differences due to evolutionary causes, or possibly to different stress related selection pressures on the two sexes during commercial chicken breeding. 相似文献

Early behaviour can determine food intake and growth rate with important consequences for life history and survival in fishes. Egg size is known to affect growth rate of young Arctic charr but its influence on the development of behaviour is poorly documented. It is believed that egg size influence on growth and potentially on the behaviour of young fish decreases over time, minimized by the effects of social factors. Shortly after first feeding, we examined differences in mobility and foraging of Arctic charr in relation to egg size and social environment. The behaviour of juveniles from small and large eggs was compared five times over the course of development and in three different experimental settings: long‐term isolation (isolation before hatching), short‐term isolation vs. group rearing and mixed size group vs. homogeneous size groups. Egg size affected foraging behaviour and mobility of fish: fish coming from large eggs were more mobile and foraged more than fish coming from small eggs. Social environment affected foraging behaviour, mobility and space use: fish in a group were more mobile, foraged more and responded faster to food delivery than isolated fish. The interaction of egg size and social effects was seen primarily in foraging activities but did not affect mobility or space use. Large fish in groups foraged more than the three other groups: large fish in isolation, small fish in groups and small fish in isolation. Agonistic behaviour was rarely observed and there was no significant effect of group composition on agonistic behaviour. We discuss the importance of egg size and social effects at early stages of development with a focus on the evolutionary ecology of Arctic charr. 相似文献

Piwi proteins and their partner small RNAs play an essential role in fertility, germ-line stem cell development, and the basic control and evolution of animal genomes. However, little knowledge exists regarding piRNA biogenesis. Utilizing microfluidic chip analysis, we present a quantitative profile of zebrafish piRNAs expressed differentially between testis and ovary. The sex-specific piRNAs are derived from separate loci of repeat elements in the genome. Ovarian piRNAs can be categorized into groups that reach up to 92 members, indicating a sex-specific arrangement of piRNA genes in the genome. Furthermore, precursor piRNAs preferentially form a hairpin structure at the 3′end, which seem to favor the generation of mature sex-specific piRNAs. In addition, the mature piRNAs from both the testis and the ovary are 2′-O-methylated at their 3′ ends.SMALL RNAs, ranging from 19 to 30 nucleotides (nt) in length, constitute a large family of regulatory molecules with diverse functions in invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, and fungi (Bartel 2004; Nakayashiki 2005). Two major classes of small RNAs are microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). The functions of small RNAs have been conserved through evolution; they have been shown to inhibit gene expression at the levels of mRNA degradation, translational repression, chromatin modification, heterochromatin formation, and DNA elimination (Mochizuki et al. 2002; Bartel 2004; Kim et al. 2005; Brodersen and Voinnet 2006; Lee and Collins 2006; Vaucheret 2006).Over the past few years, focus on the genetics of small RNAs has helped clarify the mechanisms behind the regulation of these molecules. While hundreds of small RNAs have been identified from mammalian somatic tissues, relatively little is known about small RNAs in germ cells. A recent breakthrough has been the identification of small RNAs that associate with Piwi proteins (piRNAs) from Drosophila and mammalian gonads (Aravin et al. 2001, 2006; Girard et al. 2006; Grivna et al. 2006; Vagin et al. 2006; Watanabe et al. 2006). piRNAs and their interacting proteins Ziwi/Zili have also been identified in zebrafish (Houwing et al. 2007, 2008). Increasing evidence indicates that piRNAs play roles mainly in germ cell differentiation and genomic stability (Carthew 2006; Lau et al. 2006; Vagin et al. 2006; Brennecke et al. 2007; Chambeyron et al. 2008; Klattenhoff and Theurkauf 2008; Kuramochi-Miyagawa et al. 2008; Kim et al. 2009; Lim et al. 2009; Unhavaithaya et al. 2009). Moreover, although piRNAs are mostly expressed in germ line cells, recent studies showed piRNA expression in nongerm cells, for example, T-cell lines (Jurkat cells and MT4) (Azuma-Mukai et al. 2008; Yeung et al. 2009), indicating other functions such as in the immune system. piRNAs do not appear to be derived from double-stranded RNA precursors, and their biogenesis mechanisms, although unclear, may be distinct from those of siRNA and miRNA. Recently, two distinct piRNA production pathways were further proposed: the “ping-pong” model (Brennecke et al. 2007; Gunawardane et al. 2007) and the Ago3-independent piRNA pathway centered on Piwi in somatic cells (Li et al. 2009; Malone et al. 2009). However, the mechanistic pathways of piRNA activity and their biogenesis are still largely unknown.Teleost fishes comprise >24,000 species, accounting for more than half of extant vertebrate species, displaying remarkable variation in morphological and physiological adaptations (see review in Zhou et al. 2001). Recently, Houwing et al. (2007, 2008) reported findings on Ziwi/Zili and associated piRNAs, implicating roles in germ cell differentiation, meiosis, and transposon silencing in the germline of the zebrafish. However, some of the identified zebrafish piRNAs are nonrepetitive and nontransposon-related piRNAs, suggesting that piRNAs may have additional unknown roles. In this study, we show that for males and females, piRNAs are specifically derived from separate loci of the repeat elements, and that ovarian piRNAs are far more often associated in groups. Genomic analysis of piRNAs indicates a tendency to folding at the 3′ end of the piRNA precursor, which may favor cleavage of the piRNA precursor to generate mature sex-specific piRNAs. Furthermore, methylation modification occurs at the 2′-O-hydroxyl group on the ribose of the final 3′ nucleotide in both the testis and the ovary. 相似文献

Schistosomes, parasitic flatworms that cause the neglected tropical disease schistosomiasis, have been considered to have an entirely carbohydrate based metabolism, with glycolysis playing a dominant role in the adult parasites. However, we have discovered a close link between mitochondrial oxygen consumption by female schistosomes and their ability to produce eggs. We show that oxygen consumption rates (OCR) and egg production are significantly diminished by pharmacologic inhibition of carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1 (CPT1), which catalyzes a rate limiting step in fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) and by genetic loss of function of acyl CoA synthetase, which complexes with CPT1 and activates long chain FA for use in FAO, and of acyl CoA dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the first step in FAO within mitochondria. Declines in OCR and egg production correlate with changes in a network of lipid droplets within cells in a specialized reproductive organ, the vitellarium. Our data point to the importance of regulated lipid stores and FAO for the compartmentalized process of egg production in schistosomes. 相似文献

In many bird species prenatal exposure to yolk androgens of maternal origin has been found to influence offspring behavioural phenotype. In contrast to altricial birds, far less is known about maternal effects in precocial birds. In a previous experiment we found that female quail ( Coturnix japonica ) that were not previously habituated to humans (NH) produced eggs with less androgens (testosterone, androstenedione) and more progesterone when exposed to human disturbances than females habituated to humans (H). Here, we analysed social motivation and sexual behaviour of the male offspring of NH and H females. Classical behavioural test procedures were applied including separation, runway, partner choice and female encounter tests. As chicks, offspring of the NH females spent more time far from conspecifics than offspring of the H females. As adults, the same NH males showed less crowing and courtship behaviour (ritual preening) in female encounter tests than H males. Thus, maternal environment and egg quality may be key factors in the emergence of individual variability of appetitive behaviour, such as social proximity and courtship behaviour. Human disturbance of the mother seems to have triggered trans-generational effects resulting in consistently reduced social and sexual motivation in offspring until adulthood. 相似文献

Diagnosis of gastrointestinal nematodes relies predominantly on coproscopic methods such as flotation, Kato-Katz, McMaster or FLOTAC. Although FLOTAC allows accurate quantification, many nematode eggs can only be differentiated to genus or family level. Several molecular diagnostic tools discriminating closely related species suffer from high costs for DNA isolation from feces and limited sensitivity since most kits use only small amounts of feces (<1 g). A direct PCR from crude egg preparations was designed for full compatibility with FLOTAC to accurately quantify eggs per gram feces (epg) and determine species composition. Eggs were recovered from the flotation solution and concentrated by sieving. Lysis was achieved by repeated boiling and freezing cycles – only Trichuris eggs required additional mechanic disruption. Egg lysates were directly used as template for PCR with Phusion DNA polymerase which is particularly resistant to PCR inhibitors. Qualitative results were obtained with feces of goats, cattle, horses, swine, cats, dogs and mice. The finally established protocol was also compatible with quantitative real-time PCR in the presence of EvaGreen and no PCR inhibition was detectable when extracts were diluted at least fourfold. Sensitivity was comparable to DNA isolation protocols and spiked samples with five epg were reliably detected. For Toxocara cati a detection limit below one epg was demonstrated. It was possible to distinguish T. cati and Toxocara canis using high resolution melt (HRM) analysis, a rapid tool for species identification. In human samples, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and HRM analysis were used to discriminate Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale. The method is able to significantly improve molecular diagnosis of gastrointestinal nematodes by increasing speed and sensitivity while decreasing overall costs. For identification of species or resistance alleles, analysis of PCR products with many different post PCR methods can be used such as RFLP, reverse-line-blot, Sanger sequencing and HRM. 相似文献
