Aquatic plants commonly have extensive geographical distributions, implying few restrictions to dispersal. Here we investigate the postglacial history of an aquatic plant with contrasting sexual systems (monoecy and dioecy), which are predicted to affect dispersal ability. We examined the distribution of cpDNA haplotypes using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) among 76 populations (32 monoecious, 38 dioecious, two mixed and four undetermined populations) of Sagittaria latifolia sampled throughout eastern North America. We also use these data to investigate the polarity of the evolutionary transition between monoecy and dioecy. Using PCR-RFLP, we identified eight cpDNA haplotypes. All haplotypes were found in unglaciated areas of the species' range, clustered primarily in the southeastern United States, providing evidence that glacial refugia probably occurred in this area. Genetic diversity (hT) was more than six times greater among monoecious compared to dioecious populations. All seven of the haplotypes for which the sexual system could be determined were represented among monoecious populations. In contrast, only four haplotypes were detected in dioecious populations and 94% of individuals from dioecious populations possessed a single haplotype. Monoecious populations possessing this widespread haplotype were restricted to the southern portion of the range, indicating that dioecy probably originated in this region and then spread northwards. The distribution of cpDNA haplotypes in dioecious populations represents a subset of the variation found in monoecious populations, a pattern expected if dioecy has evolved from monoecy in S. latifolia.  相似文献

Flint has been widely used during prehistoric times and the question of determining the origin of specific pieces is recurrent in archaeological discussions. We have run a scanning electron microscope examination of the surfaces of both natural flints from geological deposits and flaked artefacts excavated from prehistoric sites in the Massif Central (France). These samples exhibit mineralogical textures resulting from genomorphic and phenomorphic processes, dispersed alteration in the form of erosion as well as the dissolution and migration of more or less mobile elements. Rocks used to manufacture artefacts at Sainte-Anne 1 (Haute-Loire, France) and Payre (Ardèche, France) show various kinds of alteration related to the range of phases of transport and deposition to which they were subjected, beginning with their first exposure in a geological context and following through to the post-depositional phase, (i.e., following abandonment as artefacts in an archaeological site). Later phenomena do not however completely obliterate stigma imprinted prior to their prehistoric collection, because the main late-phase change that occurs on flat surfaces prior to their collection is preserved in the hollows of remnant natural surfaces on archaeological tools. With the scanning electron microscope, five distinct morphologies representative of different environments have been characterised by establishing associations between the different forms and by plotting their regional distribution.  相似文献

Genetics of Eusattus muricatus LeConte (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) populations within the Lahontan Basin and the Lahontan Trough of the Great Basin, western North America were assayed using protein electrophoresis. Two similar population phenograms were developed using neighbour-joining and maximum likelihood algorithms. An area cladogram was developed using geological data. Maximum likelihood phenogram and area cladogram were compared to test for congruence between geology and phylogeny. Pairwise regressions of estimated gene flow measures ( Nm ) yielded a significant relationship for populations within the Lahontan Basin but not for the Lahontan Trough. Protein molecular clock calculations showed that populations within the Lahontan Basin were primarily differentiating according to the dune/subbasin isolation events predicted by the area cladogram.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of Proechinophthirus zumpti Werneck, 1955, mainly the external chorionic features of the egg, is described through electronic microscopy techniques. This species was first cited in Argentina, infesting Arctocephalus australis (Zimmermann, 1873). The existence of monoecious and dioecious populations within plant species is rare. This limits opportunities to investigate the ecological mechanisms responsible for the evolution and maintenance of these contrasting sexual systems. In Sagittaria latifolia, an aquatic flowering plant, monoecious and dioecious populations exist in close geographic proximity but occupy distinct wetland habitats differing in the relative importance of disturbance and competition, respectively. Life-history theory predicts contrasting evolutionary responses to these environmental conditions. We propose that the maintenance of monoecy and dioecy in S. latifolia is governed by ecological selection of divergent life-history strategies in contrasting habitats. Here we evaluate this hypothesis by comparing components of growth and reproduction between monoecious and dioecious populations under four conditions: natural populations, a uniform glasshouse environment, a common garden in which monoecious and dioecious populations and their F1 progeny were compared, and a transplant experiment using shaded and unshaded plots in a freshwater marsh. Plants from dioecious populations were larger in size and produced heavier corms in comparison with monoecious populations. Monoecious populations flowered earlier and produced more flowers, clonal ramets, and corms than dioecious populations. The life-history differences between the sexual systems were shown to have a quantitative genetic basis, with F1 progeny generally exhibiting intermediate trait values. Survival was highest for each sexual system in field plots that most closely resembled the habitats in which monoecious (unshaded) and dioecious (shaded) populations grow. These results demonstrate that monoecious and dioecious populations exhibit contrasting patterns of investment in traits involved with growth and reproduction. Selection for divergent life histories between monoecious and dioecious populations of S. latifolia appears to be the principal mechanism maintaining the integrity of the two sexual systems in areas of geographic overlap.  相似文献

The role of mutations of small versus large effect in adaptive evolution is of considerable interest to evolutionary biologists. The major evolutionary pathways for the origin of dioecy in plants (the gynodioecy and monoecy-paradioecy pathways) are often distinguished by the number of mutations involved and the magnitude of their effects. Here, we investigate the genetic and environmental determinants of sex in Sagittaria latifolia, a species with both monoecious and dioecious populations, and evaluate evidence for the evolution of dioecy via gynodioecy or monoecy-paradioecy. We crossed plants of the two sexual systems to generate F1, F2 and backcross progeny, and grew clones from dioecious populations in low-and high-fertilizer conditions to examine sex inconstancy in females and males. Several lines of evidence implicate two-locus control of the sex phenotypes. In dioecious populations sex is determined by Mendelian segregation of alleles, with males heterozygous at both the male- and female-sterility loci. In monoecious populations, plants are homozygous for alleles dominant to male sterility in females and recessive to female sterility in males. Experimental manipulation of resources revealed sex inconstancy in males but not females. These results are consistent with predictions for the evolution of dioecy via gynodioecy, rather than the expected monoecy-paradioecy pathway, given the ancestral monoecious condition.  相似文献

Plant species rarely exhibit both monoecious and dioecious sexual systems. This limits opportunities to investigate the consequences of combined versus separate sex function on mating patterns and genetic variation and the analysis of factors responsible for the evolution and maintenance of the two sexual systems. Populations of the North American clonal aquatic Sagittaria latifolia are usually either monoecious or dioecious and often grow in close geographic proximity. We investigated mating patterns, genetic structure, and relationships between the two sexual systems using allozyme variation in populations from southern Ontario, Canada. As predicted, selfing rates in monoecious populations (n = 6, mean = 0.41) were significantly higher than in dioecious populations (n = 6, mean = 0.11). Moreover, marker-based estimates of inbreeding depression (delta) indicated strong selection against inbred offspring in both monoecious (mean delta = 0.83) and dioecious (mean delta = 0.84) populations. However, the difference in selfing rate between the sexual systems was not reflected in contrasting levels of genetic variation. Our surveys of 12 loci in 15 monoecious and 11 dioecious populations revealed no significant differences in the proportion of polymorphic loci (P), number of alleles per locus (A), or observed and expected heterozygosity (H(o) and H(e), respectively). Strong inbreeding depression favoring survival of outcrossed offspring may act to maintain similar levels of diversity between monoecious and dioecious populations. Despite geographical overlap between the two sexual systems in southern Ontario, a dendrogram of genetic relationships indicated two distinct clusters of populations largely corresponding to monoecious and dioecious populations. Reproductive isolation between monoecious and dioecious populations appears to be governed, in part, by observed differences in habitat and life history. We suggest that selfing and inbreeding depression in monoecious populations are important in the transition from monoecy to dioecy and that the maintenance of distinct sexual systems in S. latifolia is governed by interactions between ecology, life history, and mating.  相似文献

In protogynous plants, female flowers of early blooming plants are at a reproductive disadvantage because they cannot set fruit due to the lack of available pollen. To study this phenomenon, gender expression of the monoecious herb Sagittaria trifolia was investigated over the entire flowering season in two field and two cultivated populations in Hubei and Hunan Provinces, China. In racemes of S. trifolia, flowers open sequentially from bottom to top, with female flowers opening first followed by male flowers. This creates a temporal separation of sexes in the species. Under field conditions small plants are often male, with production of both male and female flowers increasing with plant size. Femaleness increased among sequential inflorescences since female flower production increased whereas male flower production did not. Seed production was greater in large inflorescences because they contain more female flowers, and the number of ovules increased in female flowers at basal positions within the raceme. A consistent pattern of high seed set was observed in flowers from both field and cultivated populations. About 1 % of unfertilized ovules resulted from no pollination and 2 % of the seeds produced were only partly developed due to resource limitation. In the first inflorescence of the six experimental populations, 6.7-40.0 % of individuals produced only male flowers, and female flowers of 1.9-6.5 % individuals were aborted. The occurrence of male flowers in early blooming inflorescences could be an adaptive strategy to conserve resources and enhance pollination of female flowers in protogynous S. trifolia.  相似文献

The fine structure of the book lungs in 29 species representing ten monophyletic taxa of the Scorpiones (Arachnida) was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Scorpion lungs are not homogeneous across the group. Here we describe and score three sets of phylogenetically informative characters: (1) the surface ornament of the lung lamellae, (2) the distal margins of the lamellae and (3) the fine structure of the spiracle margin. Provisional results suggest that reticulation on the surface of the lung lamellae is characteristic of the Buthidae. By contrast, non-buthid scorpions maintain the air space between adjacent lamellae using projecting trabeculae. Typically they are simple struts, but the trabeculae are distally branched in all investigated Scorpionidae, plus at least one species belonging to the Liochelidae. Simple thorns on the lamellar margins probably represent the plesiomorphic condition, while more complex, branched, arcuate morphologies appear to be homoplastic, occurring sporadically in numerous scorpion sub-groups. The tightly packed, hexagonal pillars around the posterior margin of the spiracle support a close relationship between Scorpionidae and Liochelidae, to the exclusion of the Urodacidae.  相似文献

The marine dinoflagellates Protoperidinium ventricum (Abé) Balech, P. diaholus (Cleve) Balech, P. tristylum (Stein) Balech and P. divergens (Ehrenberg) Balech, collected from neritic plankton of the gulfs of Saronikos and Korinthiakos, Greece, have been examined by SEM. The flowers and inflorescences of animal-pollinated dioecious plants are generally small and inconspicuous in comparison with outcrossing cosexual species. The net benefits of an attractive floral display may be different for dioecious compared to cosexual populations because dioecious species experience a more severe reduction in pollen delivery when pollinators forage longer on fewer individuals. Here, we develop a model that predicts the decrease in pollen delivery in dioecious relative to cosexual populations from female-female, female-male and male-male visit sequences as the number of individuals visited varies. To evaluate the predictions of our model we conducted a common garden experiment with dioecious and monoecious (cosexual) arrays of the insect-pollinated herb Sagittaria latifolia. We find that, although increasing the advertisements of floral rewards (i.e. increasing floral display) attracts more pollinators to individuals, the probability that these pollinators subsequently deliver pollen to neighbouring plants depends on sexual system. Because the number of individual plants visited per foraging trip did not increase significantly with floral display, the relative pollination success of dioecious versus monoecious populations decreases with increased floral display. We propose that this could explain why dioecy is strongly correlated with reduced floral display among angiosperm species.  相似文献

Freshwater oligochaetes have at least two kinds of external sense organs: multiciliate organs of short cilia (also present in earthworms) and sense organs with one to three long cilia (unknown in earthworms and possibly acting as rheoreceptors). Ciliate sense organs of freshwater oligochaetes are distributed over their entire body surface, including the clitellum. They are scattered on the prostomium and pigidium and are arranged into a transversal chaetal row and dispersed or forming a few other discrete transversal rows on chaetal segments. Three species display very prominent sense organs (sensory buds in Protuberodrilus tourenqui and papillae in Ophidonais serpentina and Spirosperma velutinus). The number of cilia per organ at the prostomium of freshwater families appears to be fewer than that of terrestrial ones. It is suggested that the total number of cilia at the prostomium of the freshwater species could be related to their habitat, evolving from an epibenthic to an endobenthic way of life.  相似文献

Aim

To test the fitness-gain curve model proposes that cosexual plants adjust their sex ratios and resource allocation depending on their size. In this study, the monoecious species Sagittaria potamogetifolia was used as a model to determine the effects of plant size and density on gender modification and reproductive allocation.

Methods and materials

Various traits, including flower number and plant biomass, were measured under four different artificially constructed population density treatments. More male flowers were produced than female flowers per individual at high densities, while the opposite trend was observed at low densities. This trend was particularly evident in the highest density treatment.

Results

A trade-off was discovered between male–female sex allocations in the highest density treatment (40 individuals m?2). The allometric growth of reproductive organs compared with plant size was detected, as evidenced by the reproductive structures’ biomass and flower numbers. However, in the highest density treatment, size was weakly negatively correlated with femaleness.

Conclusion

Thus, S. potamogetifolia has a reproductive strategy that easily adjusts to different reproductive environmental densities.  相似文献

Aerenchyma gas spaces are important for plants that survive flooding because these spaces provide an internal pathway for oxygen transport to the root zone. The objective of this study was to characterize the development of aerenchyma gas spaces in Sagittaria lancifolia L., a dominant species in freshwater wetlands adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. Tissue at different developmental stages was collected from hydroponically grown plants, embedded in plastic, and sections were observed with a light microscope. In S. lancifolia roots, lysigeny (cell lysis) produced gas spaces that increased in volume from the root meristem to the most mature root tissue. Shoot aerenchyma occurred in the large petioles of S. lancifolia and through the blade midrib, but not in the laminar portion of the blade. In contrast to the roots, gas spaces in the petiole were formed by schizogeny (cell separation during development). Shoot initials produced cells that formed interlocking cylinders in the cortex and diaphragm cells that bridged the central portion of the cylinders. Division and expansion of both these cell types increased the diameter of the cylinders and created schizogenous gaps between diaphragm layers that produced large gas spaces in mature tissue. Therefore, aerenchyma development occurs by two different processes in S. lancifolia.  相似文献

The structure of the periostracum in the fresh-water mussel Amblema has been described using light microscopy, transmission elec;ron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The structure and evolutive course of the periostracum was studied along its entire length, from the periostracal groove until it forms the tough outer covering of the shell. At least five structurally and functionally distinct regions were identified. In addition, the periostracum itself was seen to be a multilayered structure consisting of three major layers which are themselves subdivided into minor layers. From these morphological observations, a regulatory role for the various periostracal layers in mineral trapping, nucleation, and the subsequent formation of the prismatic and nacreous layers of the shell can be postulated.  相似文献

The thecae of over thirty species of Protoperidinium from aroundthe British Isles have been examined by SEM and the varioustypes of ornamentation described. The simplest type consistsof smooth plates in which the trichocyst pores have an evenor irregularly thickened rim. In one species the pores are situatedon mounds. In another variation the plates are covered withminute pimples. Many species have plates which are thickenedby a surface reticulum and this may be made up of lines of pimples,of irregularly arranged ridges or bars which protrude to formsmall spines. In one species the ridges always surround trichocystpores and in another there are prominent spines which bear noobvious relationship with the pores.
