Background
As bending free-kicks becomes the norm in modern day soccer, implications for goalkeepers have largely been ignored. Although it has been reported that poor sensitivity to visual acceleration makes it harder for expert goalkeepers to perceptually judge where the curved free-kicks will cross the goal line, it is unknown how this affects the goalkeeper''s actual movements.Methodology/Principal Findings
Here, an in-depth analysis of goalkeepers'' hand movements in immersive, interactive virtual reality shows that they do not fully account for spin-induced lateral ball acceleration. Hand movements were found to be biased in the direction of initial ball heading, and for curved free-kicks this resulted in biases in a direction opposite to those necessary to save the free-kick. These movement errors result in less time to cover a now greater distance to stop the ball entering the goal. These and other details of the interceptive behaviour are explained using a simple mathematical model which shows how the goalkeeper controls his movements online with respect to the ball''s current heading direction. Furthermore our results and model suggest how visual landmarks, such as the goalposts in this instance, may constrain the extent of the movement biases.Conclusions
While it has previously been shown that humans can internalize the effects of gravitational acceleration, these results show that it is much more difficult for goalkeepers to account for spin-induced visual acceleration, which varies from situation to situation. The limited sensitivity of the human visual system for detecting acceleration, suggests that curved free-kicks are an important goal-scoring opportunity in the game of soccer. 相似文献2.

Metamorphosis has intrigued biologists for a long time as an extreme form of complex life cycles that are ubiquitous in animals.
While investigated from a variety of perspectives, the ecological focus has been on identifying and understanding the ecological
factors that affect an individual’s decision on when, and at what size, to metamorphose. Predation is a major factor that
affects metamorphic decisions and a recent review by Benard (Annu Rev Ecol Evol Syst 35:651–673, 2004)) documented how predator cues induce metamorphic changes relative to model predictions. Importantly, however, real predators
affect larval prey via several mechanisms beyond simple induction. In this paper, I contrast the leading models of metamorphosis,
provide an overview of the multiple ways that predators can directly and indirectly affect larval growth and development (via
induction, thinning, and selection), and identify how each process should affect the time to and size at metamorphosis. With
this mechanistic foundation established, I then turn to the well-studied model system of larval amphibians to synthesize studies
on: (1) caged predators (which cause only induction), and (2) lethal predators (which cause induction, thinning, and selection).
Among the caged-predator studies, the chemical cues emitted by predators rarely induce a smaller size at metamorphosis or
a shorter time to metamorphosis, which is in direct contrast to theoretical predictions but in agreement with Benard’s (Annu
Rev Ecol Evol Syst 35:651–673, 2004) review based on a considerably smaller dataset. Among the lethal-predator studies, there is a diversity of outcomes depending
upon the relative importance of induction versus thinning with the relative importance of the two processes appearing to change
with larval density. Finally, I review the persistent effects of larval predators after metamorphosis including both phenotypic
and fitness effects. At the end, I outline a number of future directions to allow researchers to continue gaining insight
into how predators affect the metamorphic decisions of their prey.

The life cycle of almost all dung beetles revolve around mammalian dung, the feed on dung, look for mating partners on dung and lay eggs in the dung. We know they feed on dung, but we still do not understand how exactly they filter‐feed on the dung and which particles size range they are ingesting. The aim on this study was to investigate the filter feeding by particle selection by adult dung beetles using Scarabaeus goryi and how that improves the nutrient quality of the ingested particles. We compared the particle sizes and nutrient content of the dung with the ingested material in the foregut, hindgut and the faeces of the dung beetle. Adult dung beetles do select smaller dung particles when feeding, we found the maximum particle size for the ingested particle to be around 1400 μm. The average particle size increased through the gut length. Dung beetles also selected particles with higher nitrogen content when feeding, the nitrogen content increased from about 1.5% in the dung to just over 5% in the foregut which then decreased to the level of the unprocessed dung in the dung beetle faeces. Carbon content did not increase from the unprocessed dung to the foregut but decreased through the gut length. Feeding by particle size selection by dung beetles helps in selecting particles with higher nitrogen content to compensate for the low levels found in dung. 相似文献

Polarity is the structural and functional hallmark of epithelia. The apical plasma membrane, facing the organism's exterior (the lumen of the gut, renal tubule and glandular duct), differs in many important respects from the basolateral plasma membrane that is apposed to the interior of the organism. The generation and maintenance of epithelial polarity require a highly specialized subcellular machinery to bring proteins to their appropriate sites of action. This is a dynamic process involving the interpretation of sorting signals, vectorial delivery mechanisms, membrane‐specific fusion and retention processes. A general survey is given of old as well as more recent findings concerning matches between electrophysiological properties of motoneurones and contractile properties of their muscle fibres. Mechanisms for creating and maintaining such matches are discussed. It is pointed out that it is not sufficient to describe the variation of functional motoneurone characteristics simply in terms of 'fast' or 'slow': all properties seem continuously graded and there is cytochemical evidence for several, seemingly independent parameters of functional specialisation. 相似文献

We have analyzed the histone modification status of the PHO5 promoter from yeast by the ChIP technology and have focused on changes occurring upon activation. Using various acetylation-specific antibodies, we found a dramatic loss of the acetylation signal upon induction of the promoter. This turned out to be due, however, to the progressive loss of histones altogether. The fully remodeled promoter appears to be devoid of histones as judged by ChIP analyses. Local histone hyperacetylation does indeed occur, however, prior to remodeling. This can explain the delay in chromatin remodeling in the absence of histone acetyltransferase activity of the SAGA complex that was previously documented for the PHO5 promoter. Our findings shed new light on the nucleosomal structure of fully remodeled chromatin. At the same time, they point out the need for novel controls when the ChIP technique is used to study histone modifications in the context of chromatin remodeling in vivo. 相似文献

The pink, tubular, nectariferous flowers of Melocactus intortus (Cactaceae) in Puerto Rico are visited by native hummingbirds (Anthracothorax dominicus), but also by invasive honeybees (Apis mellifera) and ants (Solenopsis sp.). We sought to determine if the bees and ants significantly alter the pollination of M. intortus by measuring pollinator effectiveness. Using traditional estimates of effectiveness (visitation rate and seed set), our results show that hummingbirds were the most effective pollinators as expected. Bees and ants were less effective, and their contributions were one‐fourth to one‐tenth of that observed for hummingbirds. We then modified this measure of effectiveness by adding two components, fitness of progeny and temporal availability of visitors, both of which refine estimates of flower visitor effectiveness. With these new estimations, we found that the effectiveness values of all three animal visitors decreased; however, the role of hummingbirds as the principal pollinator was maintained, whereas the effectiveness values of bees and ants approached zero. By these new measures of overall pollinator effectiveness, the invasive honeybees and ants have little effect on the reproductive success of M. intortus. 相似文献

We studied the discharges of neurons in the ascending lateral line pathway in response to the complex water motions generated by a moving object. The wave stimulus generated by the object was monitored with a hot-wire anemometer and with a custom-built particle imaging system. Responses of central lateral line neurons differ from those of primary afferent fibers in aspects like temporal discharge patterns and directional sensitivity. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that central lateral line neurons integrate input from many afferents innervating neuromasts distributed across large portions of the body surface. 相似文献

Kin selection predicts that helpers in cooperative systems should preferentially aid relatives to maximize fitness. In family-based groups, this can be accomplished simply by assisting all group members. In more complex societies, where large numbers of kin and non-kin regularly interact, more sophisticated kin-recognition mechanisms are needed. Bell miners (Manorina melanophrys) are just such a system where individuals regularly interact with both kin and non-kin within large colonies. Despite this complexity, individual helpers of both sexes facultatively work harder when provisioning the young of closer genetic relatedness. We investigated the mechanism by which such adaptive discrimination occurs by assessing genetic kinship influences on the structure of more than 1900 provisioning vocalizations of 185 miners. These 'mew' calls showed a significant, positive linear increase in call similarity with increasing genetic relatedness, most especially in comparisons between male helpers and the breeding male. Furthermore, individual helping effort was more heavily influenced by call similarity to breeding males than to genetic relatedness, as predicted if call similarity is indeed the rule-of-thumb used to discriminate kin in this system. Individual mew call structure appeared to be inflexible and innate, providing an effective mechanism by which helpers can assess their relatedness to any individual. This provides, to our knowledge, the first example of a mechanism for fine-scale kin discrimination in a complex avian society. 相似文献

The eutrophication status of the entire Baltic Sea is classified using a multi-metric indicator-based assessment tool. A total of 189 areas are assessed using indicators where information on reference conditions (RefCon), and acceptable deviation (AcDev) from reference condition could be combined with national monitoring data from the period 2001?C2006. Most areas (176) are classified as ??affected by eutrophication?? and only two open water areas and 11 coastal areas are classified as ??unaffected by eutrophication??. The classification is made by application of the recently developed HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT), which is described in this paper. The use of harmonized assessment principles and the HEAT tool allows for direct comparisons between different parts of the Baltic Sea despite variations in monitoring activities. The impaired status of 176 areas is directly related to nutrient enrichment and elevated loads from upstream catchments. Baltic Sea States have implemented nutrient management strategies since years which have reduced nutrient inputs. However, eutrophication is still a major problem for large parts of the Baltic Sea. The 2007 Baltic Sea Action Plan is projected to further reduce nutrient inputs aiming for a Baltic Sea unaffected by eutrophication by 2021. 相似文献
