Based on the study of over 500 zooplankton samples collected in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) during 1965–1974, the species composition from different habitats is analysed. The zooplankton assemblage is typically tropical with relatively few species of Cladocera and Copepoda. The Rotifera include a large number of species of the genus Brachionus. The limnetic zooplankton resembles the pond zooplankton closely in that all the eurytopic species found in the different types of habitats, including ponds, also occur in the limnetic zooplankton. The large Cladocera belonging to the genus Daphnia are very rare. In general, large zooplankters are absent. The size composition of the zooplankton has a smaller range than in temperate regions. This is due to the absence of large-sized zooplankton species. The reasons for the differences in species variety and size composition between zooplankton of temperate and tropical regions is perhaps due to a number of factors. These include the effects of high and uniform temperatures, food availability and predation by fish and invertebrates.  相似文献

Zooplankton samples were collected from 49 small reservoirs of northern Ivory Coast in April 1997. Thirty taxa were identified, including 20 rotifers, 3 copepods and 6 cladocerans. The number of taxa per lake ranged between 12 to 22 and decreased with the total abundance of zooplankton. Copepods dominated standing biomass. Coinertia analysis suggested the role of seston food abundance, oxygen depletion and turbidity for zooplankton abundance and community structure. Rotifers, and particularly Brachionus angularis, Polyarthra and Filinia, were more abundant than copepods in the most eutrophic, turbid and deoxygenated reservoirs. The role of oxygen as a determinant of community structure is probably linked to the specific tolerance of taxa, but turbidity role could not be evaluated with certainty in the absence of information on visual predators.  相似文献

The zooplancton dynamics and the populations of Boeckella gracilipes Daday of Lake Escondido (Rio Negro, Argentina) were studied from March 1987 to March 1988. Rotifers and Cladocerans showed high densities during spring and summer, while copepods were densest in autumn. The vertical distribution study showed that rotifers prefer upper levels of the water column, while cladocerans and copepods prefer lower levels, especially during thermal stratification. Boeckella gracilipes had a sex ratio biassed toward female, though changes in the sex ratio were observed. The clutch size was high in winter when the proportion of ovigerous females was low. The instantaneous birth rates were low during winter and high in summer. This result is related to the thermal cycle of the lake, by the influence of temperature on egg development time. The mortality rates showed a similar pattern, and maximum values were registered in spring and summer.  相似文献

Calanoid copepods belonging to four species and one subspecies from lakes and ponds mainly from the Cordillera Oriental (22) and Cordillera Central (1) of the Colombian Andes are recorded. Most of the water bodies studied are located in the páramo region, between 2996 and 4085 m altitude. The family Boeckellidae is recorded for the first time from Colombia. Taxonomic characteristics of Boeckella occidentalis Marsh, 1906, Boeckella gracilis (Daday,1902) and the diaptomid Prionodiaptomus colombiensis (Thiébaud, 1914) are discussed. A new diaptomid genus, Colombodiaptomus, with one species and one subspecies are established.  相似文献

Species composition, abundance, and spatial distribution of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were studied in Lake Ziway from late April to early July 2004. A total of 49 rotifer species was recorded, with Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus angularis, Filinia novaezealandiae, and Trichocerca ruttneri being numerically dominant. Variation in abundance was extremely high, ranging from 2 to 1000+ individuals per litre. There was no significant difference in the distribution of rotifer species between inshore and offshore regions. Crustacean species richness was low, with only five cladoceran and three copepod species occurring in the open water. Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma excisum dominated the cladoceran community, whereas Thermocyclops decipiens was the dominant copepod. Although numerically dominant (75%), rotifers accounted for less than 30% of mean total zooplankton biomass. Peak abundance of crustaceans was observed in May and June, following the onset of the rainy season and increased phytoplankton production. Variation in the spatial distribution of crustacean species was neither observed horizontally between inshore and offshore areas nor vertically in the highly turbid and wind exposed deeper part of the lake. On the other hand, Moina micrura varied significantly in size between inshore and offshore areas. Adult M. micrura dominated offshore, whereas juveniles were more abundant inshore, suggesting a predominantly littoral selective predation on large and adult crustaceans by fish. Current knowledge of flower visitors and pollination in the Oriental Region is summarised. Much less is known about pollination than seed dispersal and the coverage of habitats and taxa in the region is very uneven. The available evidence suggests that pollination in lowland forests is dominated by highly social bees (mainly Trigona and Apis species), with beetles probably the next most important group, followed by other bees and flies. In comparison with the better-studied Neotropics, large solitary bees, moths, Lepidoptera and vertebrates are relatively less important. These differences are greatest in the canopy of the lowland dipterocarp forests of Southeast Asia, where they probably reflect the unique temporal pattern of floral resource availability resulting from 'general flowering' at supra-annual intervals. Apis bees (but not Trigona species) are also important in most montane, subtropical and non-forest habitats. Apart from the figs (Ficus spp.), there are few well-documented examples of plant species visited by a single potential pollinator and most plant-pollinator relationships in the region appear to be relatively generalised. The small sizes of most pollinators and the absence of direct human exploitation probably make pollination mutualisms less vulnerable to failure as a result of human impacts than dispersal mutualisms, but more subtle impacts, as a result of altered gene flows, are likely to be widespread. On current evidence, pollination systems in the Oriental Region do not require any specific conservation action, but this review reinforces arguments for making the preservation (or restoration) of habitat connectivity the major focus of Oriental conservation.  相似文献

Current knowledge of frugivory and seed dispersal by vertebrates in the Oriental Region is summarized. Some degree of frugivory has been reported for many fish and reptile species, almost half the genera of non-marine mammals and more than 40% of bird genera in the region. Highly frugivorous species, for which fruit dominates the diet for at least part of the year, occur in at least two families of reptiles, 12 families of mammals and 17 families of birds. Predation on seeds in fleshy fruits is much less widespread taxonomically: the major seed predators are colobine monkeys and rodents among the mammals, and parrots, some pigeons, and finches among the birds. Most seeds in the Oriental Region, except near its northern margins, are dispersed by vertebrate families which are endemic to the region or to the Old World. Small fruits and large, soft fruits with many small seeds are consumed by a wide range of potential seed dispersal agents, including species which thrive in small forest fragments and degraded landscapes. Larger, bigger-seeded fruits are consumed by progressively fewer dispersers, and the largest depend on a few species of mammals and birds which are highly vulnerable to hunting, fragmentation and habitat loss.  相似文献

Variations of species composition and population size of planktonic algae were studied in relation to the different nutrient levels in a eutrophic pond and an oligotrophic lake. The results obtained were discussed in comparison with the changes in photosynthesis and chlorophyll of several algal populations cultured under different nutrient conditions. As based on unialgal culture experiments two types of algae (the Chlorella-type and the Melosira-type) could be distinguished with regard to variations of photosynthesis and chlorophyll in response to different nutrient levels. Distribution of the Chlorella-type algae may be confined to eutrophic waters, while the Melosira-type algae can be distributed widely in waters from oligotrophic to eutrophic.  相似文献

The limnology of Lago Biao and Lago Loreto, two tropical crater lakes on the island of Bioko, was investigated for the first time in January of 2002. Lago Biao fills a caldera at 1750 m altitude and is 18.5 m deep. This lake was characterized by low conductivity (11.6-13.3 S cm–1), low pH (5.9-6.2), an oxycline between 6 and 10 m depth (90-27% saturation), and a Secchi depth of 5.5 m. Dinoflagellates, desmids, and green algae dominated the phytoplankton community. The rotifers Anuraeopsis fissa, Polyarthra indica, Trichocerca simoneae, and T. similis were most abundant above or in the thermocline. During the day Tropocyclops prasinus tjeefi and Chaoborus cf. ceratopogones concentrated in the oxycline, whereas Daphnia laevis was most abundant between 0 and 4 m depth. In contrast, L. Loreto is 82 m deep and probably fills an explosion crater (maar) at 1050 m altitude. The lake had a turbid, yellowish appearance and a Secchi depth of only 0.6 m. Oxygen content dropped from 121% at the surface to 6% in 10 m depth. The pH declined from 9.15 at the surface to 7.4 in only 2.5 m depth and became acidic at approximately 15 m depth. One species of cyanobacterium, one dinoflagellate and one green alga dominated the phytoplankton and together reached densities of 12 100 cells ml–1. Only one rotifer (Brachionus angularis) and one copepod (Tropocyclops prasinus tjeefi) species colonized the open water. Intact algal cells and zooplankton specimens were encountered near the bottom.  相似文献

We examined changes in the nearshore zooplankton community of South Bay, Lake Huron before (1982) and after (2002–2005) the invasions of dreissenid mussels and Bythotrephes longimanus and found substantial changes including lower cladoceran abundance, particularly Bosminidae, and higher copepod abundance after invasion. We also estimated changes in the energy content of zooplankton potentially available to larval lake whitefish before and after invasion using published values of energy content per unit mass. There were no differences in available zooplankton energy in May, the period when larvae feed inshore based on thermal preferences and surface temperature data. Abstract The historical biogeography of phlebotomine sand fly taxa Hertigia, Warileya, Phlebotomus (Idiophlebotomus), P. (Spelaeophlebotomus), P. (Anaphlebotomus), and P. (Euphlebotomus) and the Phlebotomus (Euphlebotomus) argentipes species complex was investigated using phylogenetic inference from comparative genital morphology, distribution of ancestral taxa, fossil evidence and geological age. Idiophlebotomus and Euphlebotomus occur in the Oriental region with one species from northeast Australia, whereas Anaphlebotomus occurs both in the Afro‐tropical and Oriental regions. These disjunct distribution patterns across the Oriental region and the present day distribution are likely to be vicariance due to break of Gondwanaland. Fossil records, extant taxa distribution, phylogenetic analysis of the Old World Phlebotominae and paleogeography suggest that ancestors of Idiophlebotomus and Euphlebotomus originated apparently in the Cimmerian continent of northern margin of Gondwanaland in the early Permian (290 million years ago, MYA) and subsequently radiated in the Mesozoic by tectonic vicariance. The Phlebotomus argentipes species complex occurs in the South and South‐east Asian countries and transmits the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani that causes visceral leishmaniasis (Kala‐azar) in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The phylogeography of P. argentipes was caused through vicariance followed by dispersal events from 5O MYA (the Eocene) until the Recent era.  相似文献

In a limnocorral (LC) experiment performed in mesotrophic Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, a control LC containing a planktonic community similar to that in the lake was compared with a LC where the large zooplankton had been removed by filtration at the beginning of the experiment. The herbivorous zooplankton (mainly Daphnia galeata and D. hyalina) reduced algal biomass and primary production, however did not influence the size structure of the phytoplankton and the relative amount of different size classes contributing to the total primary production. Likewise, the seston (POC and PP) concentrations were diminished without changes in particle size composition. Since herbivorous zooplankton transform smaller particles into larger particles (fecal aggregates) through their grazing activity and thus enhanced particle formation owing to coagulation and microbial activity, sedimentation losses of POC and PP were increased in the LC with zooplankton. The importance of planktonic and sestonic particle size structure in aquatic ecosystems is stressed, as the smallest algae (< 12 μm) contributed 80 % of the primary production, which is in contrast to the 33 % contributed to the total POC sedimentation by this particle size class.  相似文献

Monthly averages of standing stock wet biomass of zooplankton in Lake Kinneret (Israel) varied between 11 and 76 g m–2 during 1969–1981, with the exception of two months. Averaged contributions of different groups were: Cladocera 58%, Copepoda 35% and Rotifera 7%. Total standing crop wet biomass is highest during January–June, averages varied between 35 and 50 g m–2, and decreases during summer–fall (23–36 g m–2). The winter biomass of Cladocera fluctuated between 22 and 35 g m–2 and dropped to a range of 9–23 g m–2 in summer, whereas copepod biomass varied very little around an average of 18 g (ww) m–2 with the exception of low values from April to June. The stock biomass of Rotifera is relatively high during winter floods season (December-March) whilst in summer it is very low.Young stages of fish in Lake Kinneret feed mostly on zooplankton and zoobenthic forms. The most abundant fish in the Kinneret ecosystem, Mirogrex terraesanctae terraesanctae, also feed on zooplankton at the adult stage throughout the year, and herbivorous fish consume zooplankton during the summer when lake plankton resources are limited.The summer ecosystem of Lake Kinneret is characterised as a steady state type, in which the impact of the zooplankton-chain is of great importance. Increase of predation pressure on zooplankton by fish can disequilibrate the balanced trophic relations existing between nannoplankton production and zooplankton grazing capacity. Such a situation can lead to organics accumulation as nannoplankton blooms, resulting in water quality deterioration. Management options aimed at preventing collapse of zooplankton populations are discussed.  相似文献

Plankton and littoral samples were obtained from several ponds and lagoons of different environments in the Mexican state of Tabasco. These systems are located in the Grijalva-Villahermosa or the Usumacinta basins. Twenty-two copepod species were recorded, most of them cyclopoids with neotropical and Caribbean affinities. Physical and chemical data associated with the species, as well as morphometric parameters of the surveyed systems were measured and analyzed. A correlation was found between diversity and parameters related to the productivity and the shoreline development (D L) of the systems; therefore the littoral heterogeneity could be used to predict the species number in shallow tropical systems. At a regional level, the Tabasco copepod fauna is similar to that known from the Yucatan Peninsula, but different from the faunal associations of central Mexico. Distributional patterns differed slightly between both basins and appear to be correlated with climatic variations. This first survey of the freshwater copepod fauna in the state of Tabasco shows it to be constituted mainly by neotropical forms.  相似文献
