Morphological changes in a population of Keratella cochlearis were investigated in a reservoir of changed temperature and high trophy. Four morphological forms were distinguished: Keratella cochlearis f. cochlearis, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. micracantha, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. micracantha, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. typica and K. cochlearis f. macracantha. A correlation between the length of the lorica and the posterior spine, and the temperature of water was observed. These four forms of Keratella cochlearis occurred during the entire period of investigations.  相似文献

Food limitation and seasonal population declines of rotifers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Summary Keratella cochlearis exhibited consistent seasonal abundance patterns during a four-year study in Little Rock Lake, Wisconsin, U.S.A. In each year, spring population peaks were followed by strong summer reductions. Concomitant with population declines, there were reductions in rotifer egg ratios. Keratella taurocephala abundance patterns were similar to those of K. cochlearis during 1984 and 1985, but not in 1986 and 1987, when spring peaks and summer declines were not apparent. However, summer declines in the egg ratio of K. taurocephala were observed during each year. The reduction in rotifer populations simultaneously with decreased egg ratios suggested that population declines were caused by food limitation. Food-addition experiments conducted in situ in small enclosures indicated that food was limiting for K. cochlearis when its populations were declining, but not during other periods of the year. Keratella taurocephala did not show a consistent response to food addition.  相似文献

The temporal distribution of spined and unspined forms of Keratella cochlearis in Cubillas reservoir during an annual cycle, and the stomach contents of Asplanchna girodi, were studied. The results suggest that the length of the caudal spine plays a critical role in the defense against predation by Asplanchna girodi. Short-spined forms showed a higher susceptibility to predation than unspined forms, which may have important consequencies for spine length variation in Keratella cochlearis populations.  相似文献

Data on the pelagic rotifer fauna in 10 Estonian lakes accumulated for 20 years, as well as published data are analysed. It is possible to distinguish three main indicator groups among rotifers: (1) for oligo- and mesotrophic lakes (Ploesoma hudsoni, Keratella serrulata, Synchaeta grandis, Asplanchna herricki, Ascomorpha ovalis, Gastropus stylifer, Conochilus hippocrepsis); (2) for meso-and eutrophic lakes (Trichocerca capucina, Filinia longiseta, F. limnetica, Keratella quadrata, K. cochlearis tecta, K.c. hispida, Polyarthra euryptera, Keratella hiemalis, Trichocerca porcellus, T. pusilla); (3) for eutrophic lakes (Brachionus spp., Anuraeopsis fissa, Pompholyx sulcata, P. complanata, Trichocerca cylindrica, Hexarthra mira).  相似文献

The impact of organic nutrients and massive addition of bacteria was followed in lake water mesocosms in a eutrophic lake. Increased DOM initiated a sequence of trophic responses indicated by rapid increases in bacterioplankton, protozoa, and algal biomass. The populations of Keratella cochlearis and Keratella quadrata showed a distinct response by rapid increase in birth rate followed by maxima of production and abundance. This succession clearly reflected the trophic position of these rotifer populations in the food chain. A reverse response was observed in Conochilus unicornis.  相似文献

Larger species, e.g. Asplanchna priodonta and Conochilus unicornis, and grasping species, e.g. Gastropus stylifer and Ascomorpha spp., became more abundant, while smaller filter feeders, e.g. Keratella cochlearis, decreased after an experimental reduction of the fish population. This development is probably caused by changes in basic regulating factors. The change to invertebrate predator dominance may affect smaller species (e.g. Keratella cochlearis) more than others, the increase of net phytoplankton (e.g. peridineans) will favour grasping species, and the change in seasonal occurrence of certain crucial food species may affect the competitive balance between certain rotifers (e.g. Polyarthra spp.).  相似文献

The filtering rates of14C labelledChlamydomonas sp. by 3 dominant species of rotifers were studied in eutrophic Lake Aydat. They varied from 4 to 53 µl ind–1 h–1 forKeratella cochlearis, from 2 to 56 µl.–1h–1 forKeratella quadrata and from 3 to 52 µl ind–1 h–1 forKellicottia longispina. Their maximum assimilation efficiency was 32%. At the measured grazing rates, these populations could clear the water in less than two days during July. In Lake Aydat, the rotifers community could play an important role in the regulation of seasonal succession of phytoplankton and bacteria.  相似文献

Plankton hauls were made with 55 m Hydrobios nets at one Jamieson and six Benin River stations at monthly intervals for 12 and 24 months during 1981/82 and 1986–1988, respectively. In all, a 100 km stretch of the Benin River and its tributary, the Jamieson, were covered. Fifty species of Rotifera were recorded. About 80% were cosmopolitan. The turbulent nature of the river is reflected in a diversity of Lecanidae found, although the dominant species were Keratella tropica (Apstein) and Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) (Brachionidae). Spatial investigations revealed the euryhaline nature of Brachionus plicatilis (O. F. Muller), and showed most Benin River rotifers to be freshwater inhabitants.  相似文献

1. Fluorescently labelled algae (FLA) were used to measure clearance rates of the rotifer Keratella cochlearis. The freshwater algae Chlorella vulgaris and Stichococcus bacillaris were labelled with a fluorescent dye, 5-(4,6-dichlorotriazin-2-yl) aminofluorescein (DTAF), following a modified staining procedure. 2. Keratella cochlearis ingested both algal species. Clearance rates on tracer foods varied between 2.4 and 6.9 μl ind?1 h?1, which are comparable with those determined using other techniques. 3. The main drawback of the FLA technique was that only a little more than one-third of the total amount of algal cells of both C, vulgaris and S. bacillaris were well stained with the dye (DTAF), despite the use of a higher concentration of dye and a longer staining period than recommended in the literature. 4. The FLA method can be successfully applied in grazing studies involving size selection and competition for food among zooplankton. The method complements existing techniques for measuring the clearance and ingestion rates of filter-feeders.  相似文献

Morphological form variation in a loricate rotifer, Keratella tropica APSTEIN is decribed. Form variation in this rotifer involves appearance and development of the left postero-lateral spine. The right postero-lateral spine varies, too. It increases with increasing length of lorica and left postero-lateral spine. The waters of Lagos Harbour have a salinity variation of 30, as a consequence of the annual rainfall regime and of the influx of Atlantic Ocean waters. We made monthly plankton hauls at 10 stations for 11 months starting in October 1986, and found 51 species of rotifers, with Brachionus baylyi Sudzuki & Timms, Keratella hispida Lauterborn, Colurella obtusa Gosse, and Filinia pejleri Hutchinson recorded for the first time in Nigeria. In distribution, species numbers decreased with increasing salinity. Brachionus plicatilis, B. rubens, Hexarthra intermedia, Keratella americana, K. cochlearis and K. tropica were classed as euryhaline. Stenohaline species were Anuraeopsis fissa, Ascomorpha ovalis, Filinia longiseta, F. opoliensis, Gastropus sp., Lecane curvicornis and Monostyla stenroosi. All other monogononts were restricted to waters of salinity below 1.  相似文献

The crustaceans and rotifers of 17 samples from the plankton and 3 from the littoral from lakes of the lower Rio Nhamundá, an affluent of the Amazon were studied.

145 taxa of rotifers and 46 of crustaceans were found; two rotifers and three crustaceans are new to science: Keratella americana nhamundaiensis, Euchlanis triquetra var. nhamudaiensis, Echinisca superaculeata, E. sioli, and E. mira. In the taxonomical part 24 rotiferan and 22 crustacean taxa are described in more detail, drawings of them given, and partly remarks made about the geographical distribution.

In the biocenotical part the conditions of dominances were studied: Brachionus zahniseri and Keratella americana within the rotifers and Bosminopsis deitersi and Oithona amazonica within the crustaceans are the dominant species in the pelagial. In the littorial Synchaeta stylata and Stre‐blocerus pygmaeus were found to be dominant.

The species diversity and also the evenness is higher within the rotifers than in the crustaceans. By means of an index of similarity dendrograms were drawn where groups of lakes can be differentiated by using the similarity between the crustaceans. The proportion of neotropical species in relation to pantropical and cosmopolitical species is lowest in the rotifers, higher in the cladocerans and highest in the copepods at 100%.  相似文献

Résumé On a considéré ici quelques formes des genres Keratella, Polyarthra, Synchaeta et Filinia. On a relevé, dans le lac de Nemi, deux races écologiques chez Keratella cochlearis, et une écologiques chez K. quadrata. Chez le gen. Polyarthra on a observé que l'on trouve, suivant l'hypothèse de l'introgression par Pejler (1956), bien plus fréquemment des formes hybrides que des formes typiques. Chez le gen. Synchaeta on a décrit en detail les mastax type tremula et type pectinata; on a exprimé l'opinion qu'il n'est pas possible de distinguer entre elles, par la structure du mastax, les formes S. tremula (ou truncata), S. kiting; S. oblonga et S. lakowitziana. Chez le gen. Filinia on pense qu'il soit possible de distinguer morphologiquement F. longiseta et F. terminalis, mais il est possible qu'à ces deux formes correspondent plusieures espèces.  相似文献

The mouthpart morphology of the freshwater calanoid copepod Acanthodiaptomus denticornis was examined with optical microscopy. The mouthparts have sharp teeth and stout appendages with clawlike setae, typical of omnivorous calanoid mouthpart morphology. Observation of the buccal aperture with Scanning Electron Microscopy shows a large opening permitting feeding on prey as large as Keratella cochlearis. These observations agree with our feeding experiments which show that A. denticornis feed on K. cochlearis.  相似文献

The seasonal cycles of zooplankton were determined for 18 consecutive months in a sewage-enriched lake in northern Canada and were related to algal availability and utilization, food consumption, temperature and the density of predators. Most of the common species (Daphnia pulex, Daphnia middenorffiana, Keratella cochlearis, Keratella quadrata, Polyarthra vulgaris) increased in abundance in May and June, reached a mid-summer maximum, and declined sharply in the fall. Phytoplankton densities increased sharply in May, peaked early in June and gradually decreased through the summer and fall. Since the quantity of algae in the guts remained constant during this period, algal availability and utilization had no direct impact on the seasonal cycles of any species. Furthermore, the amount of ingested material in D. pulex and D. middendorffiana was similar regardless of time of year, implying that the total quantity of food in the environment did not restrict development. Although temperature was the most important factor influencing variations in the densities of all species, predation by Cyclops spp. probably had little effect on the population dynamics of the fauna.  相似文献

The relative density of Polyarthra major and Keratella cochlearis was measured by centrifugation in solutions of different densities. Ficoll was used as the solute. The mean values for the relative density of living specimens of P. major was found to be 1.0277 ± 0.0062. The value for preserved animals was lower at 1.0160 ± 0.0029. The relative density of fixed specimens of K. cochlearis was measured and found to be approximately 1.0450 ± 0.0175.  相似文献

Unusually large forms of Asplanchna sieboldi, Brachionus plicatilis, B. calycijlorus, Filinia pejleri, Trichocerca similis and Keratella slacki were collected from waters of south-eastern Australia. These giant forms are figured, and brief location and ecological data are given. Although the rotifer fauna of the Murray riversystem contains pan-tropical and pan-subtropical species, there exists a greater degree of endemicity than previously considered.  相似文献
