This paper examines the microbial denitrification of a medium containing acetate as C-source and of an industrial effluent containing volatile fatty acids as main components a ndphenolics as minor components. Values for m and Y_max are represented. It has been concluded that the maintenance coefficient comprises also those processes not involved in the maintenance metabolism of the cells. The least fraction of the rate of substrate utilization of this extended maintenance metabolism has been expressed by m · 100/q_max. From the values of Y_max a P/2e-ratio < 1 and the equation of cell synthesis have been evaluated.

Plant Transfer and Botanical Gardens in Colonial Times A constant of economic history is the need of natural resources – in the past often of vegetable origin and available only from the countries of natural distribution. These countries often tried to protect their interests against the traders or users by declaring monopoles. Between these both poles botanic gardens acted very successfully and by far not according to modern ethic standards. Results of their activities were the transcontinental movements of plants and the initiation of new agricultural based industries. These should be exemplified by the British botanical gardens and species as tea shrub, rubber tree, and cinchona tree.     

Biochemische und mikrobiologische Aspekte der „Nuoc-mam”︁- Industrie in Vietnam

Nuoc-mam is a traditional foodstuff of the people of Vietnam. It is an aromatic sauce of a pleasant taste and consists of a fish hydrolysate. The hitherto used method for producing Nuoc-mam is on principle an autolysis of fish in combination with a microbial fermentation and leads to a salt containing solution of amino acids and of products from removed conversion- and synthese- products from fish and microorganisms.     

Probleme der Erweiterung der Prüfverteilungen des Maximum-Modulus-Testes und des DUNNETT-Testes

SCHULZ (1976) gave formulas for the approximate computation of the percentage points needed for the comparison of sample means by the Maximum-Modulus-Test resp. by the DUNNETT-Test. Our investigation shows that these formulas are also practicable if the number of the mean differences k is greater than 20. The maximum difference between the exact values and the approximate values of the percentage points amounts to 0,05 in the case of the Maximum-Modulus-Test with k >20 and degrees of freedom v > k for a level of error a = 0,05 resp. a = 0,01. In the case of the DUNNETT-Test this maximum difference amounts to 0,02 for 20 < k < 50 and a = 0,05. Besides it can be here supposed that the approximate percentage points are also practicable for both k >50, a = 0,05 and k >20, a = 0,01.     

Die klimatischen Bedingungen des Areals der Dunklen Taiga und der sommergrünen Breitlaubwälder

Die heutige Verbreitung der Vegetationsformationen der Dunklen Taiga und des sommergrünen Breitlaubwaldes läßt sich auch im Detail weitgehend durch die aktuellen Klimafaktoren erklären. Auch das Ausfallen des Gürtels der sommergrünen Laubwälder in Nordwestamerika steht damit im Einklang. Das Fehlen ozeanischer Lorbeer-Nadelwälder im atlantischen Europa hat seine Ursache dagegen im historisch bedingten Artenpotential. Das klimatisch-potentielle europäische Areal dieser Wälder wird von sommergrünen Breitlaubwäldern ausgefüllt. Die klimatischen Areale der Dunklen Taiga bzw. der sommergrünen Breitlaubwälder stimmen gut mit den Arealen der beiden Sektionen von Circaea überein, die damit ein Beispiel für eine charakteristisch taxonomisch-geographische Sippendifferenzierung geben.     

26. R. Krichbaum,U. Lüttge und J. Weigl: Mikroautoradiographische Untersuchung der Auswaschung des „anscheinend freien Raumes” von Maiewurzeln

Nach der Aufnahme von Ionen aus 100-mM-Lösungen durch Maiswurzeln wurde der zeitliche Verlauf der Ionenauswaschung bestimmt. Die erhaltenen Waschkurven sind mehrphasig. In einer ersten, nach 120 Minuten vollständig abgeschlossenen Phase wird der anscheinend freie Raum (AFR) ausgewaschen. Der Vergleich von Mikroautoradiographien nicht gewaschener, sondern nach der Ionenaufnahme aus 50 mM markierten Salzlösungen nur abgetrockneter und 120 Minuten gewaschener Wurzeln zeigt, daß der AFR ausschließlich in der Epidermis und in der Rinde lokalisiert ist. Die in den Zentralzylinder aufgenommene Radioaktivität ist dieser Auswaschung nicht zugänglich. Die mikroautoradiographische Bestimmung der Größe des Oberflächenfilms führt zu einer Korrektur der durch Extrapolation der Waschkurven gewonnenen Werte des AFR. Der AFR beträgt demnach etwa 17 % des Gewebevolumens.     

Vergleich von Messungen des kLa-Wertes nach der stationären und der dynamischen Methode bei der Fermentation von L-Lysin und Turimycin

The calculation and scale-up of fermentation processes need k_La as one of the most important engineering data. There are two methods to determine k_La depending on power input, aeration rate and the properties of the fermentation broth: static with a balance between air supply and exit, dynamic gassing out with following the changes of dissolved oxygen concentration during periods of air off and a following air on. Within early intervals of fermentation time the data from both methods agree well, while for later time intervals the dynamic method always gives much lower values for k_La than static. The only explanations for this phenomenon are quick changes in the oxygen metabolism or an enzymatic storage of oxygen. For both gassing out and saturation period it is possible to calculate the same absolute amounts of this additional oxygen.
