Site-specific differences in fatty acid compositions (by gas-liquid chromatography) were compared in aquatic, semiaquatic and terrestrial mammals: the ringed seals (Phoca hispida hispida and P. h. botnica), otter (Lutra lutra), raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), brown bear (Ursus arctos) and grey wolf (Canis lupus). In addition, we briefly discuss our earlier results for the Canadian beaver (Castor canadensis) and muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus). In both aquatic and terrestrial species, large amounts of Δ9-monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and small amounts of saturated fatty acids and exogenous long-chain MUFAs were found in the cold tissues of the extremities. In seals, the poikilothermic outer blubber had these characteristics and differed from the inner blubber. On the other hand, the subcutaneous and inner fat depots of the coated semiaquatic and terrestrial mammals were uniform. In the bare extremities, however, these mammals also had an excess of A9-MUFAs. The degree of Δ9-desaturation in the outer blubber of the seals was significantly correlated with age. The excess of Δ9-MUFAs in the bare extremities of land mammals increased the overall double bond content of these tissues compared with the inner depots. In contrast, due to the large amounts of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids, this was not found in the aquatic and semiaquatic species. The observed site-specific differences are discussed as possible inherited evolutionary adaptations to low temperature of the tissues.  相似文献

  • 1 Chemical communication in mammals includes an array of specific behaviours that are often ignored in terms of their potential relevance to conservation. Often used during territorial or social interactions between animals, chemical communication can also be used as a tool in reintroduction programmes. Reintroductions still exhibit high failure rates and methods to improve success should be investigated. The Eurasian beaver Castor fiber has been widely reintroduced across Europe after its near extinction in the 19th century.
  • 2 Using olfactory studies in the beaver, we aim to demonstrate how scent transfers a range of information about the sender which can be used to monitor social and territorial behaviour along with general well‐being. Scent manipulation can be used to reduce human–beaver conflicts, and aid reintroduction success through reducing stress and territorial conflicts, and by influencing dispersal and settlement.
  • 3 Two species of beavers, the Eurasian beaver and the North American beaver Castor canadensis, occupy freshwater habitats throughout North America and in parts of South America, most of Europe and parts of Asia. Most of the reviewed literature concerns the wild Eurasian beaver, its chemical communication and conservation; however, captive studies and those addressing North American beavers are also included.
  • 4 Chemical communication is advanced and has been well documented in this highly territorial species. However, few studies directly link olfaction with conservation practices.
  • 5 Olfactory studies in beavers can provide non‐invasive methods to monitor translocated animals and indicators of health. We conclude that chemical analysis, olfactory studies and behavioural manipulations involving semiochemicals have important impacts on conservation and can generate practical solutions to conservation problems including aiding animal capture, captive stress reduction, breeding pair formation and release site fidelity.

In the northern elk wintering range of Yellowstone National Park, USA, wolf (Canis lupus) removal allowed elk (Cervus elaphus) to overbrowse riparian woody plants, leading to the exclusion of beaver (Castor canadensis) and a subsequent water table decline in many small stream valleys. Reduced elk browsing following wolf reintroduction may or may not facilitate willow (Salix sp.) recovery in these areas. To determine if the effect of elk browsing on willow interacts with that of beaver abandonment, we manipulated elk browsing and the water table in a factorial experiment. Under the condition of an ambient (low) water table, elk browsing increased shoot water potential (Ψ s), photosynthesis per unit leaf area (A), stomatal conductance per unit leaf area (g s), and aboveground current annual growth (CAG) by 50%. Elk browsing occurred entirely during dormancy and did not affect total plant leaf area (L). Improved water balance, photosynthetic rate, and annual aboveground productivity in browsed willows appeared to be due to morphological changes, such as increased shoot diameter and decreased branching, which typically increase plant hydraulic conductivity. An elevated water table increased Ψ s, A, g s, CAG, and L, and eliminated or lessened the positive effect of browsing on CAG for most species. Because low water tables create conditions whereby high willow productivity depends on the morphological effects of annual elk browsing, removing elk browsing in areas of water table decline is unlikely to result in vigorous willow stands. As large willow standing crops are required by beaver, a positive feedback between water-stressed willow and beaver absence may preclude the reestablishment of historical conditions. In areas with low water table, willow restoration may depend on actions to promote the re-establishment of beaver in addition to reducing elk browsing.  相似文献

Social monogamy, considered rare in mammals, has been described in two species of beaver, the Eurasion beaver (Castor fiber), and the North American beaver (Castor Canadensis). Social monogamy, however, does not necessarily imply genetic monogamy. For example, in group living mammals, females may engage in extra-pair copulations as a result of increased female mate choice opportunities. Recently, following genetic analysis, a wide range of genetic relationships among colony members have been documented in the North American beaver, including extra-pair paternity. Here, we used microsatellite loci to provide parentage estimates from colonies of the Eurasian beaver in the Kirov region, Russia. No evidence for the presence of any extra-pair young was detected. However, in two cases, we found a pair of unrelated males inhabiting a single colony. Our results suggest that while colonies may comprise both related and unrelated individuals, the genetic mating system appears to match that of the previously inferred social monogamy.  相似文献

Elms (Ulmus procera andU. glabra) have been devastated in the UK by Dutch Elm disease. Because of lower temperatures in Northern Britain, relative to Southern Britain, elms have survived. In spite of this, elms have declined markedly in South-east Scotland over the past 20 years. Tree data relating to this decline are presented, together with a pollen calendar for the genus in S.E. Scotland and a tentative forecast for the disappearance of these two species in the region.  相似文献

The Scottish Beaver Trial, involving the translocation and release of 16 wild Norwegian beavers (Castor fiber) to Scotland, provides a good example of a ‘One Health’ scientific monitoring approach, with independent monitoring partners on ecology and public health feeding into veterinary health surveillance. Pathogen detection did not prohibit beaver release, although eight beavers were seropositive for Leptospira spp. Six deaths (37.5%) occurred during Rabies quarantine, followed by the death of two animals shortly after release and two wild-born kits due to suspected predation. Two host-specific parasites, the beaver fluke (Stichorchis subtriquetrus) and beaver beetle (Platypsyllus castoris) were also reintroduced.  相似文献

We attempted to study predation on various-sized prey by a male and female wolf (Canis lupus) with global positioning system (GPS) collars programmed to acquire locations every 10 min in the Superior National Forest of Minnesota. During May to August 2007, we investigated 147 clusters of locations (31% of the total) and found evidence of predation on a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawn and yearling, a beaver (Castor canadensis), ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus), and fisher (Martes pennanti) and scavenging on a road-killed deer and other carrion. However, we missed finding many prey items and discuss the problems associated with trying to conduct such a study.  相似文献

The ecological environment of three aquatic rodents was studied in the French Ardennes region. Two species, the coypu (Myocastor coypus) and the common muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), are invasive. By contrast the native European beaver (Castor fiber) was extirpated from the region, subsequently reintroduced, and currently is protected. The aim of this study was to compare the ecological requirements of these three species and predict their future range distributions. We studied the relationship between the species and describe the characteristics of waterways and riparian vegetation in 29 sampling sites. Coypus and muskrats were observed in a variety of riparian habitats and their probability of detection appeared to be independent of waterway width, bank height or bank slope. The availability of numerous herbaceous plants, known to be consumed by these species, may facilitate their settlement. Muskrats are widespread on the French Ardennes waterways, but coypus have not yet colonised the northern part of the region. On the other hand, the beaver was observed primarily in the widest waterways with high banks, where woody plant species, such as Betula, Carpinus and Fraxinus, are found in abundance. Potentially favourable sites for beaver and coypu settlement were analysed to suggest appropriate management according to each species’ status. However, the number of sample sites is weak, especially for sites with beaver, limiting our conclusion.  相似文献

Species introductions threaten ecosystem function worldwide, and interactions among introduced species may amplify their impacts. Effects of multiple invasions are still poorly studied, and often, the mechanisms underlying potential interactions among invaders are unknown. Despite being a remote and well‐conserved area, the southern portion of South America has been greatly impacted by invasions of both the American beaver (Castor canadensis) and Brown Trout (Salmo trutta fario). Here, we compared growth, condition, diet, and stable isotopes of sulfur δ34S, nitrogen δ15N, and carbon δ13C for stream‐living Brown Trout from streams with (n = 6) and without (n = 6) beaver in Tierra del Fuego, Chile. We show that beaver may facilitate the success of trout by positively influencing fish growth. Beaver indirectly provide greater food subsidies (i.e., macroinvertebrate abundances) by modifying the local aquatic environment through active dam and lodge building suggesting a one‐way positive interaction. Trout in beaver‐influenced streams occupied a slightly higher trophic level with more depleted sulfur and carbon isotopic ratios suggesting that food web pathways rely on secondary production from autochthonous origin. Trout in beaver‐influenced streams had a wider dietary breadth with diptera and amphipoda as the prey items providing most of the energy, whereas in streams without beaver, trichoptera were the main source of energy for trout. Ultimately, we find that these two species, which have never co‐occurred naturally, bring about the same ecosystem function and the beneficial influences in their native ranges as in invaded systems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In 1954 and 1955, I conducted studies on 4 beaver (Castor canadensis) colonies in Routt County, Colorado, USA, to develop a reliable and practical census method. In fall of 1955, these colonies were trapped to extirpation to obtain accurate counts and colony compositions. I established photo stations and took a series of photographs approximately every 5 years, in late September, from 1955 to 2005 to document beaver-population dynamics and beaver-pond successional changes after complete beaver removal. The number and configuration of dams, ponds, and canals remained remarkably similar, with maintenance conducted by succeeding generations of beaver. Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) and autumn willow (Salix serissima) boundaries also remained stable, but conifers slowly encroached. At 3 of 4 colony sites, beaver did not attempt to construct food caches for overwintering. By fall of 2005, the fourth site was also without a cache. Carrying capacity of these areas was likely limited by severe winter weather at 2,620-m to 2,900-m elevations, aspen depletion, pond-depth reduction, and sustained grazing by cattle. Although beaver carefully maintained dams, pond depths were reduced in most cases. This slow transition from an aquatic to a terrestrial system is a natural progression in this region.  相似文献

We address cross-border mammal invasions between Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, providing a detailed history of the introductions, subsequent spread (and spread rate when documented), and current limits of mammal invasions. The eight species involved are the following: European hare (Lepus europaeus), European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and red deer (Cervus elaphus) were all introduced from Europe (Austria, France, Germany, and Spain) to either or both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia. American beaver (Castor canadensis) and muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) were introduced from Canada to Argentine Tierra del Fuego Island (shared with Chile). The American mink (Mustela vison) apparently was brought from the United States of America to both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, independently. The native grey fox (Pseudalopex griseus) was introduced from Chilean to Argentine Tierra del Fuego. Few spread rates are available: the lowest are 10 km/yr and correspond to American beaver and American mink; intermediate rates are observed in muskrat and rather questionably, in grey fox; the highest rates (10–20 km/yr) are found among European hare and European rabbit. Because of their frequent migration, it is difficult to estimate the natural spread rate for wild boar and red deer. Not all mammal invasions in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia have been methodical advances of species; some involve an overlap of invasion fronts, with advances and retreats, and perhaps with re-invasions to different areas of either country. Because national policies with regard to introduced species may differ between countries sharing porous borders, it seems advisable to coordinate such policies in order to prevent the entry of unwelcome invaders.  相似文献

Almost all large carnivorans (Carnivora; > 20 kg) that inhabited South America became extinct around the Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene transition. Two exceptions were species of coyote‐sized Dusicyon, one insular (D.  australis) and one continental (D.  avus). The extinction of the former is a resolved matter, but that of D. avus, found in the Patagonian and Pampean regions, is still poorly understood. Using the Gaussian‐Resampled Inverse‐Weighted McInerny method we present new radiocarbon evidence indicating that its disappearance occurred in very recent times (about 324–496 years cal bp ). We found no evidence to support a role for hybridization with domestic dogs in causing the extirpation of this fox. Climatic change may have reduced its distributional range, as has happened with other mammals, although not to the extent of explaining its extinction. Climatic change, however, coupled with increased anthropogenic impacts such as hunting, domestic dogs, and/or other aspects relating to the impact of European colonization in South America's southern cone, were the probable main drivers of the recent extinction of D. avus.  相似文献

The Scottish Government has announced that they are minded to allow reintroduced populations of Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber), an ecosystem engineer, to remain in Scotland. Some species and habitats of conservation importance may be affected by the activities of an ecosystem engineer. The study had two key objectives: to identify the potential location of the beaver’s two ecosystem engineering activities and to assess risks to vulnerable habitats and species. To identify potential core beaver woodland, a rule-based species distribution model was developed which included a novel method of integrating beaver territory size requirements. This was used to further predict where beavers would be unlikely to dam. We used the models to assess the spatial overlap between ecosystem engineering activities (i.e. herbivory and damming) with habitats and species of conservation importance. One hundred and five thousand five hundred eighty-six hectares of core beaver woodland was identified, which predicted the location of beaver herbivory. Our model successfully predicted the location of beaver activities surveyed in the largest beaver population in Scotland. Extensive overlap was predicted between beaver herbivory and habitats of conservation importance, in particular aspen woodland, Atlantic hazelwood, and alluvial forests. Eighty-seven percent of watercourses in Scotland were outside the beaver damming model, and hence had a lower likelihood of being dammed. The majority of freshwater pearl mussel, lamprey and Atlantic salmon Special Areas of Conservation, were in river sections less likely to be dammed. If beavers recolonise their former range in Scotland, ecosystem engineering activities are likely to be extensive. However, any impacts on vulnerable species and habitats will be in specific areas and will need to be monitored.  相似文献

1. We surveyed 62 Canadian Shield lakes (<50 ha) to determine the relationship between factors related to isolation and extinction and the occurrence of brook trout (BT) (Salvelinus fontinalis), for which local extinctions have been documented over the last century in half of the lakes. 2. Logistic regression and information–theoretic model selection were used to determine the importance for the occupancy of BT of (i) isolation factors (degree of lake connectivity and the proximity of source populations of BT in neighbouring bodies of water) and (ii) extinction factors (lake morphometry and trophic status, as proxies of the risk of lake anoxia; predation and competition; and flooding caused by beaver (Castor canadensis) dams, which could potentially increase the risk of anoxia). 3. Isolation factors were the best predictors of the absence of BT in these lakes. Among extinction factors, only the impact of beaver dams (as measured by an index of increased water level and mortality of shrubs and trees in the littoral zone) improved model fits. Beaver dams were present at the outlets of all study lakes, but extensive mortality of riparian trees and shrubs was more common in lakes where BT populations were extinct. 4. Taken together, these results suggest that recolonization is a major factor determining the occurrence of BT while flooding caused by beaver dams might contribute to BT extinction by increasing the likelihood of winterkill in these small lakes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Beaver (Castor canadensis) activity creates wetland habitats with varying hydroperiods important in maintaining habitat diversity for pond-breeding amphibians with significantly different breeding habitat requirements. We documented pond-breeding amphibian assemblages in 71 freshwater wetlands in Acadia National Park, Maine, USA. Using 15 variables describing local pond conditions and wetland landscape characteristics, we developed a priori models to predict sites with high amphibian species richness and used model selection with Akaike's Information Criterion to judge the strength of evidence supporting each model. We developed single-species models to predict wood frog (Rana sylvatica), bullfrog (R. catesbeiana), and pickerel frog (R. palustris) breeding site selection. Sites with high species richness were best predicted by 1) connectivity of wetlands in the landscape through stream corridors and 2) wetland modification by beaver. Wood frog breeding habitat was best predicted by temporary hydroperiod, lack of fish, and absence of current beaver activity. Wood frog breeding was present in abandoned beaver wetlands nearly as often as in nonbeaver wetlands. Bullfrog breeding was limited to active beaver wetlands with fish and permanent water. Pickerel frog breeding sites were best predicted by connectivity through stream corridors within the landscape. As beavers have recolonized areas of their former range in North America, they have increased the number and diversity of available breeding sites in the landscape for pond-breeding amphibians. The resulting mosaic of active and abandoned beaver wetlands both supports rich amphibian assemblages and provides suitable breeding habitat for species with differing habitat requirements. Land managers should consider the potential benefits of minimal management of beavers in promoting and conserving amphibian and wetland diversity at a landscape scale.  相似文献

  • 1 Eurasian beavers Castor fiber, formerly threatened with extinction, have been widely reintroduced since the 1920s. Reintroductions and studies of possible reintroductions are continuing.
  • 2 The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines for reintroductions state that ‘the source population should ideally be closely related genetically to the original native stock’.
  • 3 Palaeoecological studies suggest that the species survived the last Ice Age in two refugia: in the west in Iberia and Southern France and in the east in the Black Sea region. The post‐Ice Age population of Western Europe, including Great Britain, recolonized from the western refugium. Recent mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid studies strongly support this view, and extant beaver populations are clearly divided into eastern and western evolutionarily significant units (ESUs).
  • 4 The western ESU is composed of three stocks which survived the 19th and early 20th century as very small, isolated populations. They are very closely related to each other. Each is genetically depauperate, apparently as a result of genetic drift at low population levels.
  • 5 There is evidence of inbreeding depression and of phenotypic abnormalities in beaver populations descended from unmixed stocks.
  • 6 The evidence suggests three coherent management options for sourcing reintroduction stock for Great Britain and for unoccupied areas of western continental Europe. These are (i) use animals from a single western ESU stock; (ii) intentionally mix animals from two or all three of the surviving western ESU stocks; (iii) make an informed exception to the IUCN guidelines and reintroduce animals of mixed eastern and western ESU provenance.
  • 7 These options are discussed with regard to IUCN guidelines, conservation biology and animal welfare considerations. It would be advantageous if a common policy on the origin of reintroduction stock were agreed by the national agencies responsible.
