The water, K+ and Na+ content of naturally produced major ampullate silk as well as silk mechanically drawn from the spider Argiope aurantia have been compared to that of the major ampullate gland. It is demonstrated that water is extracted by the major ampullate duct and that this process is accompanied by an exchange of K+ for Na+. The significance of these observations is discussed.  相似文献

Orb‐weaving spiders are good objects for evolutionary research, but phylogenetic relationships among and within orb‐weaving lineages are poorly understood. Here we present the first species‐level molecular phylogeny that includes the enigmatic orb weavers ‘Zygiellidae’ and Caerostris. Zygiellidae is interesting for the evolution of the sector web, and Caerostris is noteworthy for web gigantism and extraordinary silk biomechanics. We assembled a molecular data set using mitochondrial (COI, 16S) and nuclear (H3, 18S, 28S, ITS2) gene fragments for 112 orbicularian exemplars, focusing on taxa with diverse web architecture and size. We show that ‘Zygiellidae’ contains the Holarctic Zygiella genus group (Leviellus, Parazygiella, Stroemiellus, and Zygiella) and the Australasian Phonognatha and Deliochus. As this clade is placed with Araneidae in all analyses we treat it as a subfamily, Zygiellinae. Using the new phylogeny, we show that the sector web evolved eight times, and coevolved with the silk tube retreat, but that these features are not zygielline synapomorphies. Zygiellinae, Caerostris, and some other araneids form a basal grade of araneids that differ from ‘classical’ araneids in web‐building and preying behaviour. We also confirm that Caerostris represents the most striking case of spider‐web gigantism. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Pulchellaranea pedunculatan. gen., n. sp. (Araneae: Araneidae), a new genus of orb web spiders, is described from Cenozoic Dominican amber. Fossil representatives of the Araneidae are uncommon, even though the family is widely distributed today. An arboreal ant adjacent to Pulchellaranea pedunculata indicates the likely habit of the fossil spider in the Dominican amber forest. The encounter with the ant may have resulted in both specimens falling into fresh resin on the trunk of the Algarroba tree. A key to araneid spiders reported in Dominican amber is provided.http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:D7F92A3C-46BB-48C0-9BA1-0496038F04A5  相似文献

In order to study the tempo and the mode of spider orb web evolution and diversification, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis using six genetic markers along with a comprehensive taxon sample. The present analyses are the first to recover the monophyly of orb-weaving spiders based solely on DNA sequence data and an extensive taxon sample. We present the first dated orb weaver phylogeny. Our results suggest that orb weavers appeared by the Middle Triassic and underwent a rapid diversification during the end of the Triassic and Early Jurassic. By the second half of the Jurassic, most of the extant orb-weaving families and web designs were already present. The processes that may have given origin to this diversification of lineages and web architectures are discussed. A combination of biotic factors, such as key innovations in web design and silk composition, as well as abiotic environmental changes, may have played important roles in the diversification of orb weavers. Our analyses also show that increased taxon sampling density in both ingroups and outgroups greatly improves phylogenetic accuracy even when extensive data are missing. This effect is particularly important when addition of character data improves gene overlap.  相似文献

Cyrtarachne is an orb-weaving spider of the sub-family Cyrtarachninae (Araneidae), which includes the triangle-web-building Pasilobus and the bolas spiders. We found that web and thread characteristics of Cyrtarachne differed greatly from those of typical orb-webs. Web diameter, sticky spiral spacing, breaking strength and stickiness of thread, thread diameter and droplet diameter were significantly different from those of other members of Araneidae. It is especially worth noting that the diameter was approximately four times, and the breaking strength seven to ten times larger in Cyrtarachne viscid threads than in those of other araneids. Kinetic energy-absorbing ability of Cyrtarachne threads was much greater than in that of other species, and close to the amount of kinetic energy generated by flying moths. Viscid material of threads was peculiar because its adhesiveness decreased to zero in a few hours. Moreover, SEM photos revealed them to be covered with thin scales of material, while threads of other araneids were smooth. These two facts suggest that the viscid material of Cyrtarachne threads may be different from those of other orb-weavers. As web-building, hunting behaviour and prey composition of different species of Cyrtarachninae arc quite similar to each other, we hypothesize that these extraordinary web and thread characteristics of Cyrtarachne are shared by the other members of this sub-family. Because these characteristics differ in many ways from those of typical araneid orb-webs, there appears to have been a great leap in evolution between Cyrtarachne and the other Araneidae.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to test whether the integration of past and present foraging experience in web relocation decision enhances foraging efficiency of the spider Cyclosa argenteoalba in its natural environment. We measured daily changes in the prey availability at several fixed sites in a natural environment and constructed a model environment based on these observational data. In the model environment, we simulated the behavior of spiders that foraged and relocated their webs according to several decision rules, which differed in terms of how a spider used its past experience. Results of the simulation revealed that the less past experience is discounted in making web relocation decisions, the more prey the spider is expected to capture. The expected number of web relocations decreased as spiders kept past foraging experience longer. These results suggest that C. argenteoalba enhances foraging efficiency by using past foraging experience for long times in the decision of web relocation in its natural environment.  相似文献

Many hypotheses explaining the evolution and maintenance of sexual cannibalism incorporate the nutritional aspect of the consumption of males. Most studies have focused on a fecundity advantage through consumption of a male; however, recent studies have raised the intriguing possibility that consumption of a male may also affect offspring quality. In particular, recent studies suggest prolonged survival for offspring from sexually cannibalistic females. Here, we measured the protein and lipid content of males compared to insect prey (crickets), quantified female nutrient intake of both prey types and finally assessed how sexual cannibalism affects female fecundity and spiderling quality in the orb‐web spider Larinioides sclopetarius. We found no evidence that sexual cannibalism increased fecundity when compared to a female control group fed a cricket. Contrary to previous studies, spiderlings from females fed a male showed reduced survival under food deprivation compared to spiderlings from the control group. Offspring from females fed a male also tended to begin web construction sooner. The low lipid content of males compared to crickets may have reduced offspring survival duration. Whether additional proteins obtained through consumption of a male translate to enhanced silk production in offspring requires further investigation.  相似文献

In almost all vertical orb webs the hub is above the geometric centre and consequently, the extent of the capture area is larger below the hub than above. In addition to this vertical web‐extent asymmetry, orb webs show vertical asymmetries in number of spiral loops, mesh widths, and angles between radii. However, it was unknown whether these asymmetries are adaptations to the web‐extent asymmetry or whether they are linked to gravity in a different way than through web‐extent asymmetry. We reviewed known vertical asymmetries of orb webs, and we analysed the asymmetries of webs built by four different Cyclosa species, which show large intra‐ and inter‐specific variation in web‐extent asymmetry. We found all analysed structural asymmetries to be linked both to web‐extent asymmetry and to gravity: Larger web extents below the hub and gravity both led to more sticky‐spiral loops and to smaller angles between radii below the hub, whereas web‐extent asymmetry and gravity had opposing effects on mesh width (mean and peripheral). Independent of web‐extent asymmetry, almost all analysed webs had narrower peripheral meshes and smaller angles between radii below the hub than above. We interpret the narrow peripheral meshes along the web's lower edge as an adaptation to prevent tumbling prey from escaping, and the small angles between radii as an adaptation to prevent the sticky‐spiral lines in these narrow meshes to come into contact with each other. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 114 , 659–672.  相似文献

1. Generalist predators sharing similar food resources and phenologies as well as having no competitive interactions are expected to have a similar life-history pattern, but some closely related web spiders show different life-history traits. The present paper clarifies possible selection pressures affecting life-history traits of the three coexisting Cyclosa spiders and explores the significance of the life-history variation.
2. Cyclosa argenteoalba had lower daily survival rate and higher growth rate, C. sedeculata had higher daily survival rate and lower growth rate, and C. octotuberculata showed intermediate levels. This implies that the selection pressures these spiders experience differ appreciably even in the same habitat.
3. The significance of the life-history characteristics of the three species was evaluated by general life-history theories. Cyclosa argenteoalba showed distinguishing reproductive traits: shorter time to maturation, larger reproductive effort, larger relative clutch size, decreased clutch size with the number of clutches, and smaller egg size. These characteristics may have evolved in response to the larger ratio of juvenile to adult survivorship. Cyclosa octotuberculata had a clutch size much larger than the other two species, but relative clutch sizes accounting for body size were similar between C. octotuberculata and C. sedeculata . Also, the two species showed a similar time to maturation despite having different selection pressures. Probably, higher growth rate compensates for lower survivorship, leading to the similarity in some reproductive traits.  相似文献

This study focuses on the predatory capacity of four sympatric species of web- building spiders that inhabit coffee plantations in Southern Mexico: Gasteracantha cancriformis, Cyclosa caroli, and the morphologically similar species pair Leucauge mariana and L. venusta which were considered as one species group. The retention capabilities of the webs of these species and the incidence of prey capture and consumption were measured using eight types of insect prey belonging to the orders Coleoptera (1 species), Hymenoptera (3), Diptera (2) Lepidoptera (1) and Homoptera (1). The different characteristics of each prey such as body weight, body size, defensive behaviour, etc., were recorded. The incidence of prey retention, capture and consumption were significantly higher in G. cancriformis than in any of the other species. The lowest rates of retention, capture and consumption were observed in C. caroli, while L. mariana/venusta were intermediate in their predatory capabilities. Significant negative correlations between prey size and percent consumption were detected in L. mariana/venusta and in G. cancriformis; in both cases, large prey were less likely to be immediately consumed than small prey items. The results can be interpreted in the light of the morphological characteristics of the spiders. G. cancriformis possesses long legs and a carapace and appeared to have few difficulties to manipulate all types of prey. In contrast, C. caroli showed lesser abilities to manipulate and subdue aggressive prey items, perhaps due to the short leg length and unprotected body of this species. The consumption of prey items may be related to the predatory strategy of each spider. G. cancriformis constructs a new web every morning and prey storage was never observed. The absence of prey storage behaviour could explain why this species consumes prey soon after capture. In contrast, C. caroli constructs a permanent web and stores captured prey on a stabilimentum that may explain the very low incidence of immediate consumption of prey observed in this species.  相似文献

Both the uloborid Philoponella vicina and the araneid Gasteracantha cancriformis spiders sometimes placed silk stabilimenta on non-orb \"resting webs\" that consisted of only one or a few lines. These webs completely lacked sticky silk, so their stabilimenta could not function to attract prey. Some non-orbs were built by spiders when their orb webs are damaged. These observations contradict the prey attraction camouflage hypothesis for stabilimentum function, but are compatible with the spider camouflage and web advertisement to avoid web destruction hypotheses.  相似文献

The role of predators in food webs extends beyond their ability to kill and consume prey. Such trait-mediated effects occur when signals of the predator influence the behaviour of other animals. Because all spiders are silk-producing carnivores, we hypothesized that silk alone would signal other arthropods and enhance non-lethal effects of spiders. We quantified the herbivory inflicted by two beetle species on green bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) in the presence of silkworm silk and spider silk along with no silk controls. Single leaflets were treated and enclosed with herbivores in the laboratory and field. Another set of leaflets were treated and left to experience natural herbivory in the field. Entire plants in the field were treated with silk and enclosed with herbivores or left exposed to herbivory. In all cases, the lowest levels of herbivory occurred with spider silk treatments and, in general, silkworm silk produced intermediate levels of leaf damage. These results suggest that silk may be a mechanism for the trait-mediated impacts of spiders and that it might contribute to integrated pest management programmes.  相似文献

We analyzed the food source of riparian spiders in a middle reach of the Chikuma River, Japan, by using stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen. The carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of attached algae were higher than those of terrestrial plants, reflecting a large carbon isotope fractionation in terrestrial plants and a difference in nitrogen sources. The carbon isotope ratios of terrestrial insects were similar to those of the terrestrial plants, and the ratios of aquatic insects were scattered between those of the terrestrial plants and the attached algae. The carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of spiders were intermediate between those of the terrestrial and aquatic insects. The two-source mixing model using the carbon isotope ratio showed that the web-building spiders utilized both the terrestrial and aquatic insects, with large contribution by the aquatic insects (54% on average with a maximum of 92% among spiders taxa collected in each zone), in the riparian area in a middle reach of the Chikuma River. The large contribution of the aquatic insects was often observed for the spiders collected near river channel (<5m) and for the horizontal web-building spiders collected across the riparian area. The relative contribution of the aquatic insects might be related with food availability (distance from river channel) and spiders food preference reflected in their web types (horizontal vs. vertical). Our results showed that organic materials produced in the river channel, in the riparian area, and in the terrestrial area surrounding the riparian area were mixed at the carnivorous trophic level of riparian spiders.  相似文献
