The most abundant natural enemies of aphids on Brussels sprout crops were Syrphidae, different species being attracted differentially to weedy or weed-free plots according to whether they were more host-plant-orientated (e.g. Melanostoma spp., Platycheirus spp.) and thus affected directly by the background, or more aphid-orientated (e.g. Syrphus balteatus) and so less affected by background than by aphid numbers. Oviposition by Melanostoma spp. was usually much greater in weedy sprout crops than on sprouts in bare soil, and their eggs were also very abundant on weeds. Eggs of other syrphid species were scarcer on weeds. In contrast to Melanostoma, Platycheirus spp. usually oviposted preferentially on sprouts growing in bare soil. Oviposition by S. balteatus was in response to aphid abundance and thus tended to become greater on sprouts in bare soil. Notably more adults of non-aphido-phagous Syrphidae were caught over weedy than over non-weedy Brussels sprout plants. Anthocoris nemorum nymphs and adults were very common on sprout plants and weeds in the weedy crop but were scarce on sprouts in bare soil; A. nemorum oviposited on white and yellow charlock (Raphanus raphanistrum and Sinapis arvensis) occasionally. Parasitism of Brevicoryne brassicae by Diaeretiella rapae appeared to be related to aphid numbers and was only indirectly influenced by the crop background. Field experiments with green and brown cloth backgrounds showed that some syrphids were attracted to green; A. nemorum was relatively scarce over both artificial backgrounds. It is concluded that decreased natural enemy action is partly responsible for the initially greater abundance of B. brassicae in a weed-free crop of Brussels sprouts than in a weedy crop.  相似文献

鄂尔多斯高原地处半干旱区到干旱区的过渡带。通过沿鄂尔多斯高原从东到西的天然降水梯度的样带调查,分析了克隆植物的分布特征与降水的关系。结果表明:克隆植物的物种数量、占物种总数的比例和重要值以及根状茎型克隆植物的物种数量均与降水量呈显著正相关。5种优势植物克氏针茅、本氏针茅、黑沙蒿、赖草和短花针茅均为克隆植物,它们的分布也受降水影响。克氏针茅的密度、本氏针茅的盖度和密度、黑沙蒿的高度、盖度和密度以及赖草的高度均与降水量呈显著正相关。然而,赖草的盖度以及短花针茅的高度、盖度和密度均与降水量成负相关。因此,克隆植物在鄂尔多斯高原植被中具有重要作用,而且其作用随着降水量的增加而加强。  相似文献

Studies on Entomophthora in populations of Aphis fabae on field beans   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The population of Aphis fabae on field beans at a site in Highfield, Rothamsted in 1973 reached its peak 1 wk earlier than that at an equivalent site in Mill Dam Close, Woburn, 29 km NW of Rothamsted. Epizootics of Entomophthora caused weekly maximum mortalities of adult apterae of 71% at Highfield and 67% at Mill Dam Close. These epizootics and the periodicity of Entomophthora conidia in the air closely paralleled the development of the aphid population. There was little evidence of a consistent relationship between Entomophthora infection and any of the weather factors considered. At both sites most mortality was caused by E. planchoniana though many aphids were killed by E. aphidis and E. obscura. E. fresenii and E. virulenta killed very few aphids. Most conidia in the air were of the E. aphidis-type. Up to 44% of alatae emigrating from bean crops were infected with Entomophthora, confirming that aphid migration is an important means of distributing the fungi. Aphid numbers rose to more than 1600/plant at both sites, in spite of the action of Entomophthora, and would probably have been less had the fungi been more abundant earlier in the season.  相似文献

We examined relative effects of traits of leaf quality of ten willow species (Salix: Salicaceae) on growth rates of five species of insect herbivores found in interior Alaska (a willow sawfly, Nematus calais; the tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio canadensis; and three species of chrysomelid beetles, Gonioctena occidentalis, Calligrapha verrucosa, and Chrysomela falsa). Leaf traits examined were water content, toughness, total nitrogen contnet, pubescence, and presence or absence of phenolic glycosides. Of ten Salix species, four species contain phenolic glycosides in their leaves. We examined relative effects of water content, toughness, and nitrogen content of the Salix leaves on larval growth rates at three different levels, i.e., on a single host species, between different host species, and between herbivore species. The within-host analyses showed that effects of water content, toughness and/or nitrogen content on herbivore growth rates were generally significant in early-season herbivores but not in late-season herbivores. For each herbivore species, differences in growth rates between hosts were not explained by differences in water content, toughness, or nitrogen content. The between-herbivore analysis showed that the interspecific difference in larval growth rates were related to difference in water and nitrogen content of the hosts. Pubescence of Salix leaves had little effects on herbivore growth rates. Presence of phenolic glycosides had a positive effects on growth rates of a specialist, N. calais, but no effect on the other specialist, Ch. falsa. Presence of phenolic glycosides had, in general, negative effects on growth rates of nonspecialists, G. occidentalis, C. verrucosa, and P. canadensis.  相似文献

Zooplankton communities with a high or low density of Chaoborus larvae were established in outdoor concrete ponds, to which a carbamate insecticide, carbaryl, was applied at 0.1 or 0.5 mg l−1. The lower concentration of the chemical was harmful only to Cladocera. The higher concentration damaged Chaoborus, Copepoda, and some rotifer species, as well as Cladocera. In the ponds with a low density of Chaoborus, chemical application altered the cladoceran community from dominance by Daphnia to that by Bosmina and Moina. In the ponds with a high density of Chaoborus, Chaoborus excluded cladocerans from the zooplankton community presumably by predation, and supported the dominance of rotifers. Cladocera did not recover after application of the chemical, even when Chaoborus was eliminated by the higher concentration of chemical. The relatively rapid recovery of Chaoborus seemed to interrupt the recovery of Cladocera.  相似文献

The effects of salinity on the growth and valve morphology of five benthic estuarine diatoms (Nitzschia pusilla, N. frustulum, N. palea, N. filiformis var. conferta and Eolimna subminuscula), isolated from both freshwater and brackish/marine habitats, were investigated. The four Nitzschia strains grew well over a broad salinity range, though some (N. pusilla, N. frustulum) showed a broader salinity range tolerance (from fully saline down to at least 9.5 ppt) than others (N. palea, N. filiformis var. conferta had reduced growth at salinities of 16 ppt and above). Salinity significantly affected the valve morphology of the five strains studied. However, there was no consistent pattern in either the morphological characters affected or the direction of the effects. Although significant, the effects of salinity on valve morphology were very small and therefore it seems that the taxonomic usefulness of some of the classical taxonomical characters is not undermined.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis is given on the effect of low molecular salts on the titration behavior of partially neutralized linear polyacids or polybases. On the basis of the additivity law experimentally and theoretically established on the activity of counterions in polyelectrolyte solutions containing salts, the chemical potential of alkali added for neutralization of polyacids is derived as a function of the salt concentration. The relation between the pH and the salt, concentration at constant degree of neutralization is expressed by pH(cs) ? pH(0) = ({[? (γpCa)/?Ca]/γos} ? 1) ln [1 + (γosCspCA)] where Ca is the concentration of alkali, C8, the concentration of salts, γp is the activity coefficient of counterions in the absence of salts and γos is that in the absence of polyelectrolytes. This relation is found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained in synthetic linear polyelectrolytes as well as in rodlike charged proteins. Therefore, it is concluded that the titration behavior of linear polyions can be understood from the special feature of the integrated coulomb interaction between linear polyions and small ions which was essential for the additivity law. In addition, the screening effect of salts on the electric potential around the polyion is discussed.  相似文献

Summary A study of the morphology and life cycle of two Physoderma taxa occurring on Eleocharis spp. in Michigan is presented in detail. Both fungi possess almost identical endobiotic and epibiotic stages. They differ significantly with respect to the ease of germination of the resting spores, those on E. compressa being difficult to germinate whereas those from Eleocharis sp. from the vicinity of Ann Arbor do so readily.Resting spore stages of other collections, American, Polynesian and European, including the type of Physoderma heleocharidis (Fuckel) Schroeter, when compared, do not differ significantly from one another. P. schroeteri Krieger described from Scirpus is hardly distinguishable from P. heleocharidis on resting spore stage alone. Furthermore, we have successfully produced mature thalli and resting spores of the Physoderma on Eleocharis from Ann Arbor on Scirpus actus. Other such successful cross incculations will be needed before we will say with certainty P. schroeteri is not distinct from P. heleocharidis.Enough similarity is to be found in all the fungi on Eleocharis to place them for now, at least, in a single taxon, Physoderma heleocharidis. Future work with living material will no doubt necessitate a different treatment. The effects of both trichome density and phenolglucoside content of leaves of 76 willow hybrids (Salix alba x fragilis) were measured to estimate their influence on the distribution of Phratora vitellinae (L.), Plagiodera versicolora Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Pontania proxima (Lepeletier 1823) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) in a nursery at Gramont, Belgium.The willows showed differences in their phenolglucoside content and pilosity of leaves and are classified on these basis into four groups by a clustering method. Correlations and multiple regressions showed that these chemical and physical characteristics are good predictors of the abundance of insects. First, the abundance of larvae of Ph. vitellinae, adults of Pl. versicolora and galls of P. proxima is correlated positively with a high phenolglucoside content and a low pilosity of the leaves. Secondly, the distribution of adults of Ph. vitellinae and of larvae of Pl. versicolora is influenced by neither the chemical nor the physical leaves characteristics studied.  相似文献

The implication of state space structure on the existence of a repeatable experimentE designed to determine if a statesL has propertyP or notP is investigated. This paper describes the effects of increased expression of the cell division genes ftsZ, ftsQ, and ssgA on the development of both solid- and liquid-grown mycelium of Streptomyces coelicolor and Streptomyces lividans. Over-expression of ftsZ in S. coelicolor M145 inhibited aerial mycelium formation and blocked sporulation. Such deficient sporulation was also observed for the ftsZ mutant. Over-expression of ftsZ also inhibited morphological differentiation in S. lividans 1326, although aerial mycelium formation was less reduced. Furthermore, antibiotic production was increased in both strains, and in particular the otherwise dormant actinorhodin biosynthesis cluster of S. lividans was activated in liquid- and solid-grown cultures. No significant alterations were observed when the gene dosage of ftsQ was increased. Analysis by transmission electron microscopy of an S. coelicolor strain over-expressing ssgA showed that septum formation had strongly increased in comparison to wild-type S. coelicolor, showing that SsgA clearly influences Streptomyces cell division. The morphology of the hyphae was affected such that irregular septa were produced with a significantly wider diameter, thereby forming spore-like compartments. This suggests that ssgA can induce a process similar to submerged sporulation in Streptomyces strains that otherwise fail to do so. A working model is proposed for the regulation of septum formation and of submerged sporulation.  相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) has been commonly reported between predators and parasitoids used as biological control agents as predators consuming parasitoids within their hosts. However, the effect of parasitoid–mummy consumption on the fitness of the predator and subsequent oviposition site selection have not been well studied. In our study, we conducted two laboratory experiments to examine the influence of Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) mummies as prey on fitness and subsequently oviposition site selection of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Results indicate that when H. axyridis was reared on A. gifuensis mummies only, its larval development was prolonged, and body weight of the 4th instar larvae and newly emerged adults, and fecundity decreased. Moreover, H. axyridis did not exhibit oviposition preference on plants infested with unparasitized aphids or aphids parasitized for shorter than 9 days. However, compared with plants with mummies (parasitized ≥9 days), H. axyridis laid more eggs on plants with unparasitized aphids. In contrast, H. axyridis previously fed with A. gifuensis mummies did not show a significant oviposition preference between plants with unparasitized aphids and those with mummies (parasitized ≥9 days). Overall, our results suggest that mummy consumption reduced the fitness of H. axyridis. Although H. axyridis avoided laying eggs on plants with A. gifuensis mummies, prior feeding experience on A. gifuensis mummies could alter the oviposition site preference. Thus, in biological control practice, prior feeding experience of H. axyridis should be carefully considered for reduction of IGP and increase of fitness of H. axyridis on A. gifuensis.  相似文献

Interactions between rotifers and their insect predators have not received adequate attention, possibly due to the assumption that rotifers are too small for insects to eat. In laboratory experiments, we offered the rotifers Hexarthra mira, Plationus patulus and small and large Synchaeta pectinata to four common insect predators: the notonectids Notonecta lunata and Buenoa macrotibialis, the smaller hemipteran Neoplea striola and small (1.5 mm) aeschnid dragonfly larvae. Excepting Plationus offered to dragonflies, all rotifer preys were consumed to some degree. No size selectivity was apparent for predators that ate few rotifers, but small instar Buenoa ate significantly more large (420 m) than small (300 m) Synchaeta. Predator size appeared to be less important than predatory style and prey morphology in determining ingestion rates. Neoplea and dragonflies ate more Hexarthra than Plationus, while the pattern was reversed for Buenoa, possibly because Buenoa is able to manipulate the hard lorica of Plationus better. Insect predators are capable of direct suppression of rotifer populations, an interaction which may be particularly important in littoral zones and fishless ponds where macroinvertebrates are numerous.  相似文献

In vitro studies were carried out to investigate a possible integrated use of chemical and biological means to control the peach twig blight pathogen,Monilinia laxa. Three fungal antagonists ofM. laxa (Penicillium purpurogenum, Penicillium frequentans andEpicoccum nigrum) and six fungicides (vinclozolin, iprodione, thiram, captan, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl) were used in the study. Sensitivity of the fungal isolates to the fungicides was determined in vitro by calculating ED50 values. Benomyl and thiophanate-methyl were the most fungitoxic compounds and captan was the least fungitoxic.M. laxa andP. purpurogenum were the most sensitive to all chemicals tested, whileE. nigrum andP. frequentans presented bigger differences in their sensitivity to chemicals compared toM. laxa. E. nigrum was consistently less sensitive to benomyl (ED50=2.26 ppm), thiophanate-methyl (ED50=9.61 ppm) and vinclozolin (ED50=3.89 ppm) than the other fungi.P. frequentans was less sensitive to captan, vinclozolin, iprodione, thiophanate-methyl and thiram thanM. laxa (8, 7, 5, 4 and 2 times respectively). These results suggest thatE. nigrum andP. frequentans could be successfully used in an integrated control programme that combines biological and chemical methods.  相似文献

Substances which acted on the behavior of planarian were searched for, and two active components were isolated from culture broth of Streptomyces sp. 340. They were identified as trans-3-methylthioacrylic acid (MTAA) and 3-methylthiopropionic acid (MTPA).

It was found that many Streptomyces and some fungi accumulated MTAA, and many Streptomyces, fungi, bacteria and yeasts accumulated MTPA when the microorganisms were grown in the medium containing methionine.  相似文献

In recent yearsAspergillus flavus and aflatoxin production have been noted on several occasions in grain preserved with formic acid. Samples of mouldy barley treated with formic acid and stored in an open bin were investigated for the presence of fungi. In the lower part of the bin there was a clear dominance ofFusarium sporotrichioides, and deoxynivalenol and neosolaniol were detected.A. flavus andA. fumigatus were also present.Paecilomyces variotii occurred, almost as a pure culture, in the upper part of the bin, but no patulin was found. Cultivation of four fungal isolates from these genera on laboratory substrates containing formic acid showedP. variotii to be the most tolerant to formic acid, withstanding 150 mM, but still without patulin production.F. sporotrichioides andA. fumigatus tolerated only 6 mM formic acid. The growth ofA. flavus was reduced and atypical at 60 mM formic acid. Pretreatment ofA. flavus spores with formic acid increased aflatoxin production about 800 times.  相似文献

The effect of four opportunistic fungi viz., Paecilomyces lilacinus, Cladosporium oxysporum, Gliocladium virens and Talaromyces flavus on the life cycle of the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica, on brinjal was evaluated under glasshouse conditions. The results revealed that these fungi affected the penetration and development of M. javanica. The life cycle of M. javanica was delayed by 10, 7, 4 and 2 days in the presence of P. lilacinus, C. oxysporum, G. virens and T. flavus respectively. Fecundity, number of eggs per eggmass and number of larvae was also reduced in the presence of these opportunistic fungi. However, the number of males increased in the presence of opportunistic fungi.  相似文献

Summary Effect of pesticides, i.e., Benzene Hexachloride, Lindane, Diazinon and Endrin that are often used in India was observed on nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae Cylindrospermum sp., Aulosira fertilissima Ghose and aerobically non-nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Plectonema boryanum strain 594. Diseased seedlings and roots of cabbage and mustard of Khurpatal (Nainital), were surveyed for zoosporic plant pathogens. Pythium aphanidermatum and P. debaryanum were isolated from cabbage and P. middletonii, P. spinosum and P. undulatum were isolated from mustard. Pathogenicity tests conducted in the glasshouse indicated that P. debaryanum and P. spinosum are the most virulent pathogens of cabbage and mustard respectively.  相似文献
